You gather your soldiers together. Everyone checks ammo; most are out of rockets. The masks come off as you stand around to think of a plan. The voices of the ISF troopers have ceased as they quietly pick their way through the nighttime landscape.

Reuther. Hojo. Suddeth. Logan. McNamara. You. That's everyone.

You take a knee, placing your rifle's butt on the ground, and the others take the cue to do the same. They look tired but exuberant. Going up against armored vehicles an order of magnitude larger than you and winning tends to provide that sort of enthusiasm.

“We have about a battalion's worth of night-vision equipped infantry on our tail. I'd be perfectly happy to just ditch them because they lack our stamina under all their gear.”

“Let's hunt,” suggests Hojo, “If we take them on in small pieces, we can at least chew up a company.”

“How do you suggest we do that?” asks Kenny.

“Use our range advantage. Ignoring lucky shots in weakpoints, there is little they can do to use outside of about 300 meters.”

You ponder these options and check your map. While Hojo is right about your capabilities, the fact that you are facing a battalion means that you can easily be surrounded.

We need to weaken this ISF force, but we are out of rockets, low on ammo, and I don't think we were equipped with Sindarxi-level night-vision equipment.

“Let's bloody their nose,” you say, “So they can remember the name.”

“If we want to ambush them, we're going to need bait,” says Hojo, “Let's prey on their minds, let them construct a false narrative.”

“Like a straggler, left behind by a malfunctioning leg motor, as his comrades head for the hills” you say.

Hojo smiles, “Outside of 300 meters, their chances of hitting with a rocket are next to nil. They can enjoy the crushing despair as bullets bounce off.”

“Are you volunteering?” asks Kenny.

“Of course. I lead from the front,” says Hojo.

You nod accepting his choice, and you order the rest of your men to start their march. Hojo makes a convincing act of keeping up, before falling behind your pace. You look back and see him fake an actuator hit, limping as if his leg were a lead club.

You wait for the sound of the guns as you see the dim silhouettes of the ISF troopers crest a hill. Just as soon as they pop up, they retreat and take cover before you can fire back. Muzzles flash in the dark as they open up, lead zipping through the air with a sound like a dentist's drill. They seem to recognize the trap.

However, as you look to the side, you see a pair of jeeps filled with troops. Their axles strain under the load. You call out their position and are faced with a dilemna. You hear the boom of Hojo's rifle as he starts to engage the section (maybe a platoon) facing him. Do you get him out of their? Or do you take on the immediate threat because those heavy machine guns could hurt you badly?

You decide to open up on the jeeps. The heavy rifle recoils firmly into your armor. The cyclical rate is so slow that you could probably pull the trigger faster than it cycles. However, you watch the hot bullet fly through the air. Your men quickly join in as the lead punches through man and machine just the same. The first jeep takes one in its tire, and spins out of control before it crashes on its occupants. You quickly switch targets as the gunner of the second jeep opens up.

It too is downed under a fusillade of large caliber bullets. You can almost swear that one man's arm is torn off by a bullet. The fire ceases as the two smoking cars come to a stop. You do a quick ammo check, forty rounds left in four magazines.

“I'm hit!” groans Suddeth.

“I've got them pinned down,” says Hojo, sprinting back to join you as more ISF soldiers open up.

“Where are you hit?” asks Kenny.

“Leg, probably broken. Bastard nailed me with a fifty. Armor stopped it from destroying my leg, but I've got splinters up in my thigh. You see that more ISF forces have closed in on you.

“What are you doing?” you bark, grabbing Suddeth. You see something dark dripping out from his armored leg.

“Kenny, McNamara, three rounds rapid,” you order.

They take aim and open up.

“Hold on, Suddeth,” you say, folding your radio antenna out of the way, “Give me your hand.”

He does, and you pick him up in a fireman's carry. You feel three-hundred kilos of weight slam you into the ground. It smashes down on you like Atlas, crushing you down. Your knees bend under the weight as bullets zip around you. Hojo reaches your position and you know you have to move.

You scream as you drive your hips upward and start to run with Kenny and McNamara as Hojo and Reuther fire aimed shots in quick succession. You can feel the armor straining under the massive weight.

“Pop smoke and let's ditch these fuckers,” you order.

You hear the pins pulled and smell the acrid stench as you slip away into the night.

Morning comes again at base. Suddeth's leg was broken and lacerated by spall from the hit. It was nothing that couldn't be taken care of there. He rests as the war rages on. You listen to a rebel radio station broadcasting about recent successes in Houston and DC. Berlin, New Orleans, and Tokyo are still hellish urban battlefields. The ISF seems to be turning the tide in San Diego and Paris. Of course, you can't be sure just how much of it is propaganda. Natalie is still in the hospital.

You switch off the radio and the Sidarxi “television.” Your legs are itching, sitting around in the bunker with nothing to do.

After a while all those outside due to resentment will have died off or taken the low-hanging fruit that is membership in the ISF.

You go back to the mess. Suddeth is there, leg encased in some sort of futuristic plaster. The lights have been brightened to something that's actually comfortable for your eyes. He smiles and give you a thumbs up.

“How are you doing?” you ask him.

He rubs his moustache as he thinks it over, “As well as I can, all things considered. That knife ear shit really does work magic.”

You catch the attention of the rest of the men.

“So, what went wrong and what went right?” you ask.

Hojo offers a comment, “The ambush of the tanks themselves went splendidly, but it wasn't a good idea to go after an entire battalion.”

Kenny offers another comment, “We should have done something to separate the infantry from the tanks.”

McNamara adds, “The ambush itself went beautifully. We got about ten of fourteen tanks, even if some can be repaired. Fifty-percent casualties before entering combat is typically a gross failure.”

“So,” you say, “Ambush was well done, but we should faded away after we'd nailed the tanks”

“Essentially, but we probably could have done a better job with elevation and jump packs. Nail them from the roofs and fly away,” says Reuther.

“I'll see you later,” you say, “I'm going to need to check on the armor.”

You wave and head over to the armory. All the suits are there. Suddeth's right cuisse has been rendered completely unserviceable. The .50-caliber round had smashed through the rounded steel plate. It had done its job preventing a penetration; you feel the crater where the bullet had shattered against the steel. The inside is a mess. The splinters had even taken out the linkage to the motors. Looking carefully, you see spots of blood.

Your own armor lost its radio antenna despite the precautions. There are a few hits from bullets that splattered against the steel plate. You realize how lucky it is that you were only hit in hard areas. The others are similar with mostly cosmetic damage.

You come to Natalie's suit. It's mostly good, but you see cracks running from a neat indentation in the helmet. That's a total write-off. You can see how it happened; someone had shot her in the head, and the bullet had hit squarely rather than deflecting. The transfer had whipped her neck back far too violently, and that had taken her out of the fight

You take a notebook and make a list of all the parts that need replacement as well as your munition expenditures. You go to Yezrina's quarters and knock. She gives you permission to come in.

She is sifting through a number of documents on one of those gee-whiz, solid light displays, manipulating them with her hands. You would have been at home with something more conventional, like an electrical typewriter.

“Your results were satisfactory, but I'd rather not deploy with as few people as we now have. Do not worry; Mr. Suddeth should be back to fighting condition shortly.”

You nod and present her with your list of items to be replaced. She takes it and scans through the list.

“I'm not sure if I can obtain jump packs. Other than the shared design between German and Soviet suits, there is no standard design. Americans used their own rocket packs. There's little standardization among the rebel suits, and I would rather not have put you in a design that degrades out so quickly,” she says.

“Well, can you get them?” you ask.

“Except the jump packs, which are a 'maybe,' yes.”

She looks at you closely.

“Fritz, you seem troubled. What's on your mind?”

>[X] Everything. The war, my sister, my team.

Speaking of, we should probably expand our size to something like 10 men. It"ll still be small scale, but it"ll let us use more advanced tactics. We're pretty much at the second smallest unit level, and we ended up going alone without any support.
>>
“Yeah,” you say, voicing your simplest concern, “I don't think we have enough people to soak up the casualties we're taking. At least ten would be better. That way, we can play around with more advanced tactics.”

“That's true,” she says, “But the largest impediment is transporting you with your armors.”

“Can we rectify it?” you ask.

“Not now, but you might work with other units similar to your own,” she says.

“So there are more cells like this?” you ask.

“Of course there are; get my sister's nonsense out of your head,” she snaps.

You sit down against the wall.

“The problem is that I can't,” you admit, “She seemed far too vitriolic and scared to be lying. Is this just a fool's venture? A devil's charge into the gates of hell?”

Your cheek is burning and you are on the floor. Yezrina just delivered a vicious backhand that left your reeling.

“What the hell was that about!” you growl, just about ready to snap that slender neck of hers.

“Let's establish some baselines about my people. Most of what they're going to be telling you humans is designed to serve their own ends. The truth is twisted and bent past recognition. I'm different, at least around you, because I believe the best way to deal with you is with honesty.”

“Why should I believe you,” you ask, “If all you Sidarxi do is bullshit us?”

“You shouldn't, but take note of the independence I've been giving you. At least take that as a token of my trust and honesty.”

You stew for a bit. Looking at her, you can't tell if she's doing the same.

“What's the war situation like?”

“Mixed success. In some places, the ISF has managed to put together an organized and successful defense. In others, the rebels have managed great success. Most of the time, its still unclear who is winning. For our little shadow war, it's something of a draw. Our enemies have yet to propose their nuclear option, which entails your extinction. We, of course, have yet to play our hand.”

“That doesn't make me very confident,” you admit.

“Sure, what is it?” you ask.

“Since you have some downtime, spend some time with my sister.”

You look at Yezrina as if she is crazy.

“Wouldn't she suspect that your hand is behind this?”

“Not is she is convinced that it is your own agenda at work,” says Yezrina, smirking.

“How is that supposed to happen?”

“Take some element of truth and create a narrative around it.”

“What sort of truth”

“I don't know, you tell me. Why would you want to go back with her? Do you hate me? Do you fear for your safety? Whatever the case is doesn't matter.”

You look at her, sitting at her desk, and think to yourself that she must be willfully ignorant. She smiles, and you notice its artificiality. It's just a show, using alien body language to make them comfortable.

At the same time, why do you trust her? For all you know, you could just be a tool. Her remarks say otherwise, but remember that it isn't her native tongue. There's some element of deliberation to her every word. You don't know.

Do you hate her? You do, but at the same time, prolonged contact makes her seem so much more reasonable. You think back to the war and crimes of the Sidarxi, which still leave your heart burning in rage. At the same time, if you were to strip away that alien visage and make her some German fraulein, you wouldn't despise her, at least her personality.

That just brings you back to trust. Is it all an act? You don't know. Maybe her sister knows and maybe you can find answers there. Perhaps that is it.

Maybe not. Maybe its a matter of deception. You surely don't want the Empire to win. But you can't reveal that, obvious as it may be. You saw how good the ISF had it, and you're tired of war. Through her, you might have a way to peace.

“What do you mean by curiosity?”

“The desire to know more about you, your society, the world beyond this planet?”

“It would be something like 'I'm looking to get an edge on you and better understand my position. I'm here because your sister wants me keep an eye on my comrade, but I'd like to talk some more with you because I realize just how little I know.'”

Yezrina mulls it over before nodding.

You could use one of the motorcycles, or you could take the car. The motorcycle is less suspicious, but your lone appearance could be a problem.
