You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

After a productive morning of sketching and actually managing to get Arnaud to teach you how to be a better fighter, you had breakfast with the Princess. After finishing your food, the two of you headed to her first class, but were distracted by the commotion caused by what turned out to be a fight between Sylvie and Niklaus.

You could have stopped this.

>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

It is a good day.

"...Sylvie's third in line?" you ask, surprised that she's -that- high up.
"She's actually fourth, but nobody's seen my uncle in a decade so people tend to forget that he exists," Princess Marianne replies, not taking her eyes off of the fight.

Through the doorway, Sylvie takes a deep breath as she draws her arm back.

"Winds of the frozen north, let the swing of my sword call forth your might," Sylvie chants, Script forming around her arms. "Arctic Blade!"

An arc of ice forms in front of Sylvie's hand as she swings her arm in Niklaus's general direction and launches itself across the room. Just before it hits, Niklaus jumps off of the rock formation that he was sitting on with an exaggerated twirl. Just as Niklaus lands, the blade of ice crashes into the rock formation, cutting a chunk off of it and then exploding into an array of ice crystals.

"Ooh, using one of Greganini's instead of mine?" Niklaus laughs as he glances at the newly-formed ice. "Because you don't want to give me the advantage of knowing the exact effects of what you do?" he taunts. "Too bad I know all of his tricks too!"

I have to go to sleep before this thread really kicks off, but I just want you guys to remember that we have that that sanctuary scroll and we can use it if things get out of control. Like niklaus gets pissef and throws a super spell without thinking
>>
>>27817655
We

absolutely

positively

don't piss that away here.

We wouldn't even know the definition of a 'super spell' anyways, save the sanctuary spell for when we need it and someone is in actual danger. Not a petty spat between two sparkle-throwers.
>>
>>27817555
Niklaus then shakes his hands a few times and spreads his arms apart.

"Blazing popper..." Niklaus shouts, conceptualizing a massive amount of Script that doesn't match the number of words that he said at all.. "BUBBLE CRACKER!"

The Script vanishes as about ten faintly glowing bubbles appear in front of Niklaus. With a mad grin, he makes a pushing motion with his hands, causing the bubbles to fly right towards Sylvie even faster than the attack that he'd just dodged.

Seemingly uncaring, Sylvie stands in place, takes another deep breath, and dodges the bubbles just before they hit her. Several hit the rock formation behind her and explode, leaving the rocks themselves unbroken but slightly charred. The ones that -didn't- explode, however, turn to follow Sylvie, who now has two handfuls of rocks.

She throws them at the remaining bubbles, hitting them and causing a chain explosion. Unfortunately for her, however, one managed to avoid being prematurely detonated... and hits her right in the stomach.

With a small explosion, Sylvie is thrown in the air. Expecting the worst, you prepare to rush in to catch her... but she stops in mid-air?

And she seems to have sprouted a pair of translucent wings... but they're unlike the ones that she had the other day.

"Stardust wing?" Niklaus whistles in feigned appreciation. "Where'd you learn that one, I know -I- didn't teach you any Draconic magic..."

"So... who do you think will win?" you ask, not taking your eyes off of the fight.
"Niklaus, obviously," the Princess replies. "Sir vincent is the only one I know of who has actually managed to defeat him in a fight, and Sylvie is nowhere near that level."
"...yeah, and Niklaus is the one who's been teaching her magic in the first place..."
"Yes. I -am- curious as to how long she'll last, though."

Sylvie floats overhead, scowling at Niklaus while rubbing where she got hit with that explosion.

"I learned it from Mr. Gerhard," Sylvie says coldly.
"Ah ha!" Niklaus claps. "You try and make me apologize to Gershark with the spells that you learned from him! How adorable!"

Niklaus then begins laughing maniacally, and Sylvie clenches her fists in anger.

"Fragile gem, hidden from sight. Let your every facet reflect my will! Jewel Breaker!"

A large crystal forms in front of Sylvie, rapidly growing in size. once it stops growing, it shatters into several pieces which then surround her.

"Let's see you dodge this..." Sylvie mutters as the fragments then shoot towards Niklaus.

Considering all the magic getting thrown around, I think we should be constantly prepared to tackle the princess to the ground and shield her with our body. Just in case something comes flying at her by accident.

the metal shield spell we recently learned. Oh we probably won't be able to cover everything. But we can at least cover her vulnerable torso. Can't do anything for her head without blocking her view though.
>>
>>27818285
"What's this?" Niklaus says as he effortlessly dodges a flying crystal. "A variant of Shard Breaker? But making them bigger just makes them easier for me to see coming!"

Niklaus then skips out of the way of several more, dodging in increasingly exaggerated ways. As he carries on with his little display, Sylvie lands on the ground and her wings vanish.

"And that's all of them!" Niklaus taunts, shaking his finger. "Now it's my tur-"

He then jumps out of the way of a crystal that launches at him from behind, turning around just as every single one he'd dodged shoots right back at him.

"They're homing...?" Niklaus says, jumping out of the wy of several more. "In that case, I just need to shoot them down!"

With a mad grin, Niklaus dances around the crystals that are now swarming around him nonstop.

"Blazing popper... Bubble Cracker!"

As Niklaus continues to dodge, his bubbles form once more, quickly intercepting several of Sylvie's crystals and exploding.

"If this is the only thing have, you might as well give up now..." Niklaus taunts as half of Sylvie's initial assault have been destroyed.

>[2/3]
>>
>>27818645
We have no metal shield spell. We have a single rock that can't absorb jack shit.

We have no magic talents just yet. If it comes down to that we tackle her and take the damage ourselves.
>>
>>27818669
>[3/3]

He then casts Bubble Cracker a third time to finish off the rest, but...

"...the hell!?" Niklaus says as one of the crystals swerves -around- his bubbles, races right at him, and...

...explodes.

You hear a sound similar to glass breaking as the crystal shatters, its fragments shooting into Niklaus's remaining bubbles and causing them to explode in a chain reaction.

And Niklaus is right in the middle of it.

It looks like Sylvie may have just won this.
>>
>writing
>>
>>27818735
Yeah, shit's starting to get a little out of hand.
>>
So a few things:

1. We should absolutely not interrupt their duel because it's not our place and I'm pretty sure we'd be rather pissed if someone interrupted our GLORY AND HONOR sword dueling.

2. Root for Sylvie. You go girl.

3. Internally scream for job security because you are so happy there isn't a magic tournament to select bodyguards from.
>>
>>27818888
That's bullshit. Fencers talk to each other all the time.
>>
>>27818936

But we are not part of the duel.
>>
>>27817916
if the Princess doesn't survive to leave the country it's all going to be rather moot.

If its death or scroll; then fuck it, we use the scroll.

Bear in mind that the Sanctuary isn't mobile, so it's not any use while you're withdrawing.

This might not have been the intended use, but it is pretty close to ideal usage scenario.
>>
>>27818946
Don't have to be. Teammates can talk to each other, coaches can talk to students, and students can show support for their mentors.

There's never been a taboo in dueling about talking to one of the combatants.

We use the scroll if we absolutely have to but I seriously doubt it'll get to a point where we can't just usher the princess back into the castle. If it gets to where Niklaus placed the princess in immediate danger then his pride and dealing with Sylvie will be the least of his worries - namely because the King's boot will be so far up his ass Niklaus will be tongue polishing it.
>>
>>27818964

>>
>>27819006

likewise. But Reinhold takes his duty seriously.
>>
>>27819029
Actually, I'm pretty sure Reinhold DID read a book about duelling ettiquette.

And he DID get her by partipating in a royal tourney.

I'm pretty sure Reinhold would know the basics of common duelling ettiquette.
>>
>>27819029

I would think that it be covered. Unless you would like for Arch to specifically spell it out. It and all the various situations that we might find ourselves in.
>>
You turn to the Princess.

"Well, that was a surprise. Should I stop her now?" you ask, getting a bit antsy.
"...wait," the Princess says, pointing at the cloud of dust where Niklaus was standing.

Or rather, where he's -still- standing.

And is surrounded by... a bubble?

Sylvie grits her teeth and chants a spell as Niklaus emerges from his bubble, completely untouched.

"Nice try, Sylvie," Niklaus says, laughing. "But now that you've used all of that spell's tricks, it's not going to work on me again!"

Sylvie doesn't respond. Instead, she races towards Niklaus at what you assume is her top speed, holds a hand in front of her, and...

"STONE SHELL!"

That's the exact same spell as you used yesterday, so you're pretty sure that you know what's about to happen. Skidding into a stop, Sylvie draws back her free hand into a fist.

"Roar, my beating heart! Resonate, my flowing blood! With every blow, my fists shatter all of creation! CLUSTER IMPACT!"

Sylvie drops her first spell, dashing in before it can fall to the ground and punching it as hard as she can. The shell is suspended in the air for a split second, but then it starts to break apart and explode.

Remembering what happened to you yesterday, you move in to shield Princess Marianne from the debris. You bat a few pieces away from her, but the bulk of it is aimed directly at Niklaus.

Stopping his goofy dance (why was he doing that anyways?), Niklaus smiles a mad grin, and extends his arm towards the incoming rock swarm.

"Resonance? Impact? I'll show you what a REAL impact is!" he shouts. "I -AM-..." he says, conceptualizing a mass of Script everywhere around him, "THE IMPACT!"

The Script disspiates just as Niklaus is about to be hit, but he simply smiles and snaps with both of his hands in the direction of the attack.

You cringe as a huge shockwave booms throughout the corridor, pushing Sylvie's attack right back at her. She's taken completely off-guard, and the wave of pulverized stone washes over her, tossing her back a few yards.

Gritting your teeth, you turn to the Princess, who is covering her mouth with her hands in shock.

Whistling casually, Niklaus saunters over to where Sylvie landed.

"Guess that was a bit much..." he shrugs. "...but you -were- going to throw all that at me, you know? You reap what you sow and all that." he says, stopping just before the pile of rubble that she's partly buried in.

With a groan, Sylvie forces herself up and pushes the rubble off of her, turning to glare at Niklaus.

"...so, you wanna give up now?" Niklaus asks.
"I... I'm not done yet..." Sylvie replies, gritting her teeth.
"Really?" he adjusts his glasses and looks at her again. "You look pretty beat-up as it is, and I'm pretty sure your reserves are getting low."
"Unlike you, I'm not some frail weak mage," Sylvie says, spitting out some blood and adjusting her cracked glasses.
"Yes, yes. Because you're Sir Meathead's little girl," Niklaus says dismissively. "I'm not bored yet so I guess I can humor you a little bit longer, but I -am- getting there...'

Part of you wants to run out there and kick Niklaus's ass. But another part of you REALLY wants to see Sylvie do it herself.

"KICK HIS ARSE, SYLVIE!" you shout at the top of your lungs.
"Wha..." Sylvie looks around to see who just said that, finally meeting eyes with you. "R- Reinhold...?" she stumbles for a bit.
"Yes!" Princess Marianne shouts, following your example. "Don't give up, Sylvie!"
"Princess...? Even you..."

It looks like Sylvie's about to waver, but she then sighs and regains her footing.

"Winds of the frozen North..." Sylvie begins chanting as she draws her arm back.
"...this old trick again? You really ought to- WHOA!" Niklaus shouts as he jumps out of the way of an incoming crystal, which then explodes just as it passes.

"You tricky little..." Niklaus glares at Sylvie as he leaps out of the way of the blast.
"Sandy Step," Sylvie says, a sly grin on her face.
"Wha-"

The second before Niklaus lands, the ground beneath him turns into sand. Already unbalanced due to the carefree way he dodged the crystal blast, Niklaus slips...

"HAAAAAAAAA!" Sylvie shouts as she rushes in and punches him right in the face, sending him flying a few feet.

"I..." Her breath ragged, Sylvie lets her arm droop. "...I got you..."

But instead of hitting the floor, Niklaus stops mid-air a few inches from the ground. He then slowly rises, righting himself before he lands.

"...I don't give a damn what your father may have taught you..." Niklaus says as he holds his face, Script forming around him. "...but 'Fist' is NOT a real spell!"

Obviously he should avoid the save pr die shit, but there are some pretty interesting effects around. Things like, say

> Benign Transposition: Two willing subjects switch places. Like, the big, stupid Fighter and the handsome Conjurer who finds himself grappled. No somatic component. Unconscious creatures are always considered “willing targets,” even if they wouldn’t be willing if they knew what they were signing up for.

Yeah, it looks like Niklaus is about to lose it. Time to try and defuse this situation before it gets ugly.

...uglier.

You walk into the ruined training hall as Niklaus is approaching Sylvie. Clearing your throat to make sure they both know you're there, you speak.

"Give it up, she got a clean hit in," you say. "I only heard then secondhand, but that -was- your condition, right?"
"Reinlichkeit?" Niklaus turn to you, a look of surprise on his bruised face. "This is a duel between mages, and..."
"And you lost," you hear a voice say from behind you.

Jumping to the side on reflex, you turn to face the source of the voice.

"...Mr. Gerhard?" Sylvie says, wide-eyed. "W- what are you doing here?"
"I was actually here the entire time to make sure that you didn't come to harm," Gerhard says, bowing to her. "As this situation was caused in part by me, I felt it my responsibility."
"Not man enough to come to me with a complaint, but you're willing to send a little girl?" Niklaus taunts, scowling.

"I thank you for coming to help, Reinhold," Gerhard says to you before turning to face Niklaus. "And as for you, Archmage sucher, I felt it improper for one of my station to pick a fight with someone above me. But if you were to -insist-, I believe that I would be willing to go a round with you."

Hmm.

We will need to think up of some anti-flying abilities as soon as we can, as part of our professional development.

Otherwise, we'll be at a huge disadvantage against any aggressor magic user that knows how to fly and shoot spells at us.

Just learning to fly ourselves won't be enough, because we won't be able to protect the princess while we're flying around.

"Though I believe that we would need to take it outside," Gerhard says to him.
"Ugh..." Niklaus sighs, finally dissipating his Script. "Whatever, they -were- my conditions after all. You win, Sylvie. But ONLY because I was just screwing around."
"So does that mean..." Sylvie replies, a hopeful expression on her face.
"Son of a... YES," he slumps over backwards, his arms nearly touching the ground. "Shadow Butler guy, I am sorry that I messed up your books," he says in a total monotone.

Having finally gotten what she fought so hard for, Sylvie smiles happily.

"Though that nonmagical punching stuff was UTTER BULL, I suppose I don't hold any hard feelings for you, Sylvie. And as for you..." Niklaus turns to Gerhard, "if you have a problem with me in the future, don't send cute girls to take care of it for you."

Thinking about it what element would a gravity spell be?
Could we create a super dense rock that we fire at someone that would slow them down or ground them because it is so heavy?

Synergising with our swording is also nice but little tricks like slowing your enemy down or distracting them with a shower of gravel can be quiet effective too.

None of the spell effets I suggested would be much past beginner levels from how I understand the magic system so it could be worth looking into since Nikalus said diversification is good
>>
>>27821254
Problem.

A buff would affect us positively, but risk us getting separated from the princess we're supposed to escort.

Buffing both us and the princess is a reduction in efficiencies, because the princess will be unlikely to fight herself, and we will need to maintain two buff spells with our own meagre pool of magic.

Personally, I still think a debuff spell is a better idea, especially one that is friendly fire proof. You would only need to maintain one for a single target, move up to an AOF for multiple targets, and not need to extend your magic too much while still doing what you do best - swording stuff.

Easy. We hoist Princess up on our shoulders where she can act as magical turret while we sword.

>>
>>27821311
>A buff would affect us positively, but risk us getting separated from the princess we're supposed to escort.
It's a double edged sword: The very situation we're in now proves it.

We need to both shield the Princess and draw harm away from her simultaneously.

This is probably the thinking behind us being given Sanctuary. It allows us to create a safe zone around her while we eliminate potential threats.

>Buffing both us and the princess is a reduction in efficiencies, because the princess will be unlikely to fight herself, and we will need to maintain two buff spells with our own meagre pool of magic.

It did occur to me that the Princess is a caster, but it's not something I think we should really be expecting.
>>
>>27821311
And to add to that, even if we get acquainted with buff spells like speed increases, we would still have to practice with them in order to get anywhere useful with it - kinda like getting used to super strength or super speed.

Whereas with a debuff spell, the enemy has to catch up and adapt with the effects before they can continue being a threat. An assassin that was expect to slip the blade in quickly suddenly finding his actions like molasses loses virtually his entire combat strategy.

>>27821341
A very interesting move I'm sure, and one that we should make space for in our repertoire of magic. But it has some tactical flaws - once we swap places, will there be someone to look after the princess until we're reunited? and so on and so forth.

Not to mention it still doesn't solve the flying ranged attacker conundrum we may face.

Well, if we can rejigger it to work with inanimate objects, we can throw a rock at someone, swap places with it, and shank them in midair.

Hell, we could even do that ninja thing where they swap places with a log.
>>
>>27821383
>Whereas with a debuff spell, the enemy has to catch up and adapt with the effects before they can continue being a threat. An assassin that was expect to slip the blade in quickly suddenly finding his actions like molasses loses virtually his entire combat strategy.
buffing and debuffing are very effectively the same thing.

The catch to debuffing though is the need to have the correct spells on hand to counter a whole range of possible abilities is significantly more impractical than having certain specific buffs on hand that we know will compliment our own strengths.
>>
"Sure," you reply.
"Haha, wonderful!" Niklaus says, clapping his hands. "Now everyone get the hell out of here, I need to fix this place before Arnaud sees it and I get even more crap to deal with."

The three of you do as he says, and quickly exit the ruined training hall. You're not sure how exactly Niklaus intends to fix the place, but it sounds like he knows what he's doing.

As you return to the hallway, you're met with the Princess... and the shocked stares of the guards.

"If you gentlemen don't mind, I believe that you should return to your posts..." Gerhard says, bowing.
"Y- yeah..." you hear a guard reply uneasily.

They then quickly disperse, leaving the four of you alone.

"Sylvie..." the Princess begins, "that was quite impressive. Your father would be proud," she says, a genuine smile on her face.
"Um, thank you..." Sylvie replies nervously.
"Are you feeling alright? You were thrown around quite a bit..."
"Ehehe... just kind of scratched up, and my glasses are all busted up."

Princess Marianne sighs and walks a circle around Sylvie inspecting her to make sure she's not too beaten up.

Just slowing and weakening enemies would be enough to cover the vast majority of attacks we should face I would think

And this isn't like D&D magic where we have limited spell slots, so long as we can practice the spells we can learn them and cast them at a moments notice

I do agree with >>27821383 that buff spells are actually quite difficult to handle when you look at them realistically, all of a sudden we are twice as fast but then our timing is off. Getting stronger is less of an issue and having a spell to increase our toughness and be a literal shield for the princess would be very useful but on the whole it would be better if we could reduce or eliminate threats before they get that close so debuffing sounds better

>Just slowing and weakening enemies would be enough to cover the vast majority of attacks we should face I would think
slowing and weakening enemies has exactly the same effective result as speeding and strengthening ourselves.

Debuffing would be more useful where other allies would be able to take advantage of the debuffs too, but that doesn't seem like a probable scenario in the line of bodyguarding.
>>
>>27821437
Au contrare.

Our limiting factor is not our *magic knowledge,* which we can expand very quickly given the time we have at hand.

We are faced with the problem of a small magic reservoir. One which *cannot* change in the near future, relative to any initial advantage or disadvantage to other magic users.

In a battle of strength versus strength, the one who cannot endure as long loses. So we *cannot* afford to rely merely on buffing to level the playing field, because if we do, the enemy simply plays his stronger cards harder, faster, and longer, and we lose.

Rather than leveling the playing field with buffs, then, we should tip the whole playing field over with debuffs.

>>
>>27821525
Except it doesn't, I just said why with speeding ourselves up or strengthening ourself would throw off our timing or if we wanted to throw something it would change how we would have to aim it

Meanwhile reducing enemy speed or strength means they lose out while we don't need to adjust our actions or fighting style

The are both definitely worth looking into but debuffing is an easier and probably better path to look into at first

Really, buffs and debuffs both have their uses.

If you're outnumbered, buff yourself. If you're outnumbering the enemy, debuff them.

Its basically a simple yes/no question: would a stronger ally be more useful than a weaker enemy?

Like, getting +10 to attack and dodge is great if you're by yourself. And likewise, five people being able to do an extra 3 damage on a single enemy is fantastic if you're ganging up on people.

Buffs and debuffs both have their uses.

With group targets you should just use both buffs and debuff since you don't have to worry about action economy as much.

You guys missed something.

Our primary goal as a body guard is to protect the princess.

Sure, she doesn't attack them, so she can't take advantage of their vulnerabilities. But at the same time, since their offensive capabilities decreased, she is now better at resisting being attacked - the whole point of us being her bodyguard in the first place.

You're still approaching this problem from a solo or group grind to kill MOBS. It's not the same problem characteristics. We're dealing with an escort mission of effectively unlimited length, with an instant lose condition if our quarry is harmed.

In the face of this problem, our best options involve hindering the enemy or enabling us to become effectively invulnerable. Increasing our ability to alpha-strike or out-kill the enemy can work, but just isn't as efficient.
>>
>>27821568

This too.

>>
>>27821647

I'm pretty sure debuffed assasin is still more than capable of killing a civilian. And even if Princess is no mere civilian, it would reflect poorly on our performance if she had to defend herself personally. Our main purpose is to not let ANYTHING through.
>>
>>27821642
Hey, we've been looking for an opening for her to reconnect with those two. This is a pretty big opening since she was obviously proud of Sylvie's accomplishment and worried for her safety.
>>
>>27821647
You achieve the same effect by buffing the Princesses defence. If we lack the ability to multitarget debuff and we have a VIP in the party ALWAYS ALWAYS buff.
>>
>>27821676
This. Our job is to eliminate harm before it gets to the princess.

>>
>>27821665

Yea this sounds good.

We know what they both like after all.
>>
>>27821647
Debuffs have a chance to fail, since the enemy will try to resist or cure it, and they can always have their duration lapse. You also need to debuff EVERY enemy for it to be as effective as a buff.

Buffs will only stop working when dispelled or when their duration lapses. If you buff someone, every enemy has to go through that buff.

Hence, buffs are superior.
>>
>writing
>>
>>27821680
BUT i'm pretty sure we've made decent headway in that goal for now.

I'd like to ask what Sylvie's beef with Marianne was, later when the Princess has retired for the evening.

What we don't do is invite others to the Princess's party. If Marianne wants her company, she'll ask.
>>
>>27821724
This post is, of course, from a purely DEFENSIVE viewpoint.
>>
>>27821742
The best defence is killing every mother fucker in the room.
>>
>>27821741
What party?

We're suggesting that she arranges something to celebrate Sylvie's victory. There is no preexisting party to invite her too. Furthermore, it doesn't even have to be a party. It could as easily be a gift or anything else the princess wants to do. It's just a gentle prod to get her to talk to Sylvie more.
>>
You guys are fundamentally misunderstanding the magic system.
There are no buffs.
There are no debuffs.
This is not an mmo...
What we have are SPELLS that act like ABILITIES.
Thus we may have the ability to shoot ice waves.
How we USE that ability determines if it is offensive or defensive in nature.
Granted a spell like fireball isn't very defensive, but it has many potential applications.
>>
>>27821795
oh, I was assuming you were inviting her to the inevitable DELICIOUS TEA
>>
>>27821808

I think tea is a good suggestion.
>>
>>27821724
>>27821689
>>27821676

Do note the wording I used in >>27821647
; rather than directly defending buffing or debuffing, I've noted that we should try to hinder the enemy or enable us (Reinhold and Marianne) to become invulnerable. Improved alphastriking or attrition is a secondary objective.

I'm not trying to give a blanket justification for going for buffing or debuffing, because there are obvious exceptions to the rule for each.

But the point that I AM trying to make is that when one tries to hinder the enemy, the first things they look to do is to neutralize the enemy's strengths. There are more debuffs that are suited to this than there are buffs.

The alternative of seeking to become invulnerable can be achieved by both debuffing or buffing effects, and so leaves us indifferent in that approach.

And I think I'll leave my thoughts here, before I derail this thread any further.

As you watch Gerhard and Sylvie walk away, you turn to the Princess.

"Maybe you could arrange something for Sylvie later to celebrate her victory?" you suggest.
"Hm?" the Princess looks at you quizzically. "I'm not particularly good with parties... and I wouldn't know the first thing about organizing one."
"Oh. Um, maybe you could invite her to have tea with us, then?"
"...that is an idea... perhaps."

With a nod, the Princess heads towards the nearest stairwell. You hurry to keep up, following her to a classroom...

...where you see Sir Gregory leaning on the doorframe, looking rather annoyed.

"It's nice of you to finally show up, Princess," he says, glaring at the two of you.

The Princess is about to speak up, but you start talking before she can.

"Uh... you'll probably be furious to find out that you just missed seeing Niklaus lose a duel," you say, laughing nervously.
"Wha- Lost? To who!?" Sir Gregory stares at you wide-eyed. "I know Gerhard was pissed at him yesterday, did he actually fight him?"
"No, it was to Sylvie," you reply.
"Syl- the fuck? How, did he throw the fight!?"

"Niklaus told him that she'd win if she could get a clean hit on him before he got bored," you say.
"And then she punched him in the face," the Princess chimes in. "Right here," she says, pointing to where Niklaus got hit.

Sir Gregory stares at the two of you as if you'd just said something completely insane.

"Wha- why the fuck didn't anyone tell me about- fucking FUCK!" he shouts, shaking his fists in frustration. "I would've loved to have seen that..."

He then sighs DEEPLY, regaining his composure.

"That is most definitely a good reason to be late," Sir Gregory says to the two of you. "Consider yourselves forgiven. Now come on, I'd like to get this over with."

He the enters the classroom, motioning for you to follow.

As Sir Gregory heads to the front of the room, you and the Princess take your seats. As you sit down, you sneak a quick grin at the Princess, glancing at Sir Gregory. She smirks, covering her mouth to keep from laughing.

"Alright... today we'll be talking about Krassato," Sir Gregory says.

He then explains the relationship between Marconetti and Krassato, a kingdom that borders Ancellotta. Over its 400 or so years of existence, it's managed to stay out of most wars, yet still managing to maintain its status as a kingdom to be feared in terms of military power.

It has a basic trade agreement with Marconetti and Granache and strongly opposes Ancellotta, to the point where any citizen of one country is found within the borders of the other is immediately jailed. With the recent marriage of its crown prince to a member of the west coast's draconic royalty, Ancellotta has been extra weary for fear that Krassato will finally end their long conflict and simply crush them outright.

But despite Ancellotta's suspicion as to Krassato's intentions, Sir Gregory believes that they'll simply carry on as they have been, as there is nothing for the country to gain directly from annexing it.

With the lesson over, you follow the Princess out of the classroom and to your next destination- teatime!

Taking a seat beside her in the courtyard, you have a nice, long sigh... it's not even noon, but you already feel pretty exhausted.

Judging by that policy of theirs, I imagine only Krassato really hates them on national wholesale level. Don't know. Israel survived historically by having a much more effective military than their many opponents. US patronage helps a lot, but there was a period where this was largely offset by soviet assistance to Syria, Egypt and so on.
