Make them fight like void krakens. Ruthless ambushes that, once sprung, don't stop until the enemy is dead...so basically Raven Guard.

This. Specialize in space combat, brutal ambushes, raiding enemy ships and killing the living shit of them.
Maybe throw in some viking references or something.

Place them somewhere on the edge of the Imperium, maybe next to some minor xenos who they can raid to keep them from expanding. Alternatively, have them help defend the area around the eye of terror as a spaceborn chapter. Imperium always needs people defending round the eye of terror

I'm imagining something like the ghost captain from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Rounded eyes (I guess). Some mutation that makes the mucranoid (skin sealer?) organ hyperactive. May be helpful for a spaceborne chapter.

In keeping with the viking-squid pirate theme they may prefer axes and power scourge for close combat.

Pretty sure that'd be heresy broI like it

Maybe something like a large number of the marines having mechandrite tentacles or something would be less weird? Maybe the first company has a bunch of them because they need more points of contact/hands when they walk on the exterior of ships in the void?
>>
>>27788465
So, Dr Octopus Marines? Just with more tentacles and dakka.

They approach an enemy ship, latch onto it from outer space, and tear the plates asunder before rushing in and cutting down everything. Once they make a breach in the hull large enough, their ships fire enormous anchors into the breach, and thousands of slaves begin pulling on the giant chains to bring the attacked vessel in for a proper raid.

Veterans prefer wearing constantly wearing their ornate helmets (they appear to have beards made of tentacles) to keep their mutations hidden away from their subordinates.

Librarians wear heavy robes over their armor, and utilize many powers that focus on causing fear and paranoia in their enemies. Their psychic powers manifest with a strange sound, similar to a whale's song, that's accompanied by a sense of drowning and immediate death.

For shit and giggles, we can have the Dreads equipped with power drills, anchor launchers and those antique diving helmets.

Techmarines abound in the chapter and rank is signified by additional mechadendrites. Scouts have no mechadendrites, while battle brothers have two that are tipped by basic tools to facilitate breaching walls and bulkheads. As rank increases the breaching tools become more sophisticated and additional mechadendrites ending in weaponry are added.
>>
...what are their Chaplains like?

This is important.
>>
>>27792014
Nah don't do that thing with the Dreadnoughts

Have them covered in wires that look like seaweed, they can only speak to the Librarians in whale song, and have them use mauls and clubs
>>
>>27792014
>>27792061

Actually keep the anchor launchers, make them shoulder mounted so they can board ships using the anchors as grappling hooks
>>
For ships I think they should be light and fast, like the Viking longships.
>>
>>27792036
You know, I'd love them to be inspired by Ahab - wielding a harpoon, utterly devoted, and claiming how, in their quest to emulate the monsters of the deep, they themselves must never become monsters. That's why the harpoon is there - not as a warning to their enemies, but as a warning to the young marines in their charge.

>>27792061
Drop the wires that look like seaweed, and add some ornate armor with squids and other beasts of the deep etched into it.

Maybe they have a power flail or scourge as a melee weapon? Or would that work better with the Chaplains, who wield them alongside their power harpoons?
>>
>>27792036

Robes, Tridents and heavily ornate helmets.

Their philosophy is probably inspired by similar aspects of life/philosophy like the Drowned Priests:

Transcending "life" as is to become true incarnations of death upon the enemy
>What is dead may never die

Believing the great void that is deep space is not your enemy, but the storms that quell it are.
>implying "do not fear the warp, fear only the emotions that stir it"

Hate all things stagnant/constructive, only the the constant travels through space and dedication to a life "with the tide" is worthy to be pursued

>Focus on fleet based chapter philosophy to indoctrinate your marines into never feeling homesick.

It's not the Bloop, or the Julia, Slowdown, Train, Upsweep, Whistle, itself. It's the complex code created by the duration and switching of infra, regular, and ultrasound. It allows for massive amounts of information to be communicated in small amounts of time. It is said that the insult poetry battles between the honored dreadnoughts are reason enough to learn the highly complex language.
>>
>>27792090

Initiates and veterans alike stood and awaited in the Barges main cargo deck. To other, more ostentatious marines this would not do as a suitable pulpit for a chaplain but they do not have the traditions the Iron Krakens do for every sermon is a reenactment of the day their leader, Master Captain Ahab addressed the marines under his charge the thoughts that drove him before he and his honor guard set out to meet the Mobius, a traitor who's Apotheosis into Daemonhood grew him to the size of a ravenous beast of legend and even now tore ships asunder and devoured the souls of their occupants within

Couldn't think of anything..Good start? Maybe someone more competant in Moby dick could work off of this

Veterans are known for their ability to enter a sleep-like trance, neither dead or alive, during which they'll heal their wounds, cure any poisons, and according to some rumors, gain visions of the future or things that happened long ago. The Iron Krakens are very secretive about this, claiming it to be a gift from the Emperor whose sleep they emulate. The Light of the Golden Throne, they say, is a lighthouse of strength in the dark, stormy night through which they have to wade.

Some of the oldest members enter the Deep Slumber, a unique trance, where they'll sleep for tens if not hundreds of years, until they awake on their own, claiming that the Stars were right for them. When they do wake, they remember events that haven't occurred, horrible battles, and other things they shouldn't have any knowledge about. Because of this, many of them are avid practitioners of the Emperor's tarot - claiming that they need to know when their next slumber is.
>>
>>27792223
>BBBBBRRRRRWOOOOOOMMMMMM!

>>
>>27792284

Could be a trait unique to their Librarians?

Also, should the chaplains and tech priest be merged into one group or kept seperate?
>>
>>27792216

A bit weird and rushed, but definitely something to work with.
>>
>>27792340

I'd say because the entire chapter is involved in the fleet based activities, there should be no techmarines - All the marines are constantly trained and tested in maintaining their weaponry while the Chaplains do all the religious aspects of appeasing the machine spirits.
>>
>>27792343
Maybe Ahab is the Chapter Hero? Old Chapter Master, wielded a power spear in a battle against an enormous monster, died in the battle to provide the rest of the fleet time to relocate. Hunting for shards of the spear is a sacred duty of the Iron Krakens.

>>27792340
Separate. Chaplains care for the purity of mind and purpose, not for the tools used.
>>
>>27792340
Yeah don't have the whole Chapter be able to do it. And make it "death-like," not "sleep-like," if we're going with the Drowned Men idea
>>
What would be their origin chapter, ruleswise?

Think of either Raven guard or Iron Hands.

They where originally Imperial Fists, since they are my favourite chapter
>>
>>27792359
Well, they have innumerable slaves and servitors aboard, maybe they have techmarines whose duty is taking care of some specialized technology and the ship's systems? Every marine is trained to take care of himself and his equipment, techmarines and their servitors take care of specific systems and ships, while the chaplains deal with the entire ship?
>>
>>27792410
Raven Guard. Maybe somehow related to those experiments Corax did all those years ago?
>>
>>27792340
I think it best to keep it just Librarians.

>>27792359
There should be a few techmarines, but they usually stick to the ships, guiding and training new marines, and focusing on the mundane and day-to-day struggle of keeping a fleet based chapter running. More chief engineer than anything.
>>
>>27792410
Well the thread's making them closer to Raven Guard, tactics-wise. That and the paleness

>>
>>27792433
The paleness and weird adaptations could be explained by their homeworld's human life largely living in dimly lit ocean-floor geo-domes, the living conditions of which would be comparable to life permanently aboard a Spaceship, hence them being a fleet-based chapter.

As for the reason these people are recruited their individual geo-domes could function as independant city-states which war incessantly over mineral and fishing rights on the sea-floor.

Urban warfare in such an environment would be like a boarding action on a submarine combined with the battle of Stalingrad.

Warriors adapted for such warfare would have many skills applicable in spaceship boarding actions.

What if their home territory is a huge, dense spatial nebula full of asteroids and strange gravity currents as a result of Warp instability? The clouds of gas are so thick that even the light of suns cannot pierce far, making the entire region a zone of thick, Stygian darkness.

Their flagship has a massive lighthouse-shaped prow and guides the rest of their fleet through the Deep.

The chapter recruits from local pirate gangs- local space pirate gangs. If they can successfully navigate the dangers and asteroid reefs of the Deep, they are worthy for consideration as potential recruits.

They stood in almost complete darkness, silent save for the subtle rustling and shifting of their armour plate and mechadendrites. The vast launch bay was almost totally unlit save for the eerie glow of the Chaplain's armour, it's bioluminescent engravings wavering and shifting like moonlight through seawater.

"Remember!", Chaplain Teuthys whispered, his voice rippling through the silence.

"Remember Ahab. Remember his sins. He was weak. He succumbed to obsession. He succumbed to the desire for vengeance. He succumbed to warlust, and his passion weighed him down like a great stone.

Ahah drowned himself! Ahab nearly drowned his chapter with his hubris. But we, the pure... We do not drown. Our lungs are full of saltwater and our eyes stare into the dark. We do not down. WE RISE."

The air reverberated with the slow moaning rumble of the Dreadnoughts as they sang the Hymn to the Deep.
>>
>>27792512

Ahab is the Chapter master who, through his ruthless behaviour, nearly destroyed the chapter and a large portion of their designated territorium.

In a fit of angry zeal, his elites (read: The first company) banded together against him and threw him out the airlock where he was immediately torn to shreds by Space Squids.
The chapter is now run by a council of each company's / designated unit type's headmen (much like a Viking "Thing", a meeting of designated rulers or "free men") to determine their next targets and the fate of the Iron Kraken (I'm still vowing for Star Kraken, btw.)

their armour should be simple; mainly unpainted armour (so bare metal) with yellow shoulder pads.

They "earn" their yellow as they gain in rank, so scouts only have camo (obviously), Devastators only have yellow shoulder pads, Assault marines have yellow kneepads, etc.

Only here is the twist.

They must each tend to their own equipment and such as we discussed before, but their armour seems to rust more easily than normal, almost as if it is kept under water for long periods of time.

The lighthouse needs to be an important part of chapter tactics in emergencies. Like, it's not just a really bright light source- it's also a piece of archaeotech electronic-warfare equipment. They should also have a custom of alliance for other astartes, where the one asking for help must prove their worth by the Hunt; two champions one of the Deep-Born the other of the requesting chapter are given a week to go out hunting a void kraken and they become blood brothers or return alone with the other's gene seed, if the Deep-Born dies and his gene-seed returned, the alliance is certain, if the Deep Born returns alone the chapter has no interest in helping, if they both return all haste is made toward the requesting chapter.

Oooh! War gear idea!

Every piece of Space Kraken equipment, from Scout armour to the Lighthouse itself bears a special defensive armament known as a Deep Caul. This device is little more than a high-density pressure tank, full of the gas from the Deep itself, the nebula the Krakens call their home. This substance is almost impervious to light, and seems to have jamming effects on most other forms of electromagnetic radiation. In combat, Krakens activate their Cauls to level the playing field- they are trained to fight blind in the a Deep, but their enemies are seldom prepared to fight in total, inky darkness.

>>
>>27792795

As the Hivefleet entered the nebula, thousands of seemingly far a way lights suddenly burst into action, creating a grid of thin rays that fanned out like a fishing net cast into the tides.

As the first ships started to pass them, suddenly the Hivemind was disrupted and all the lesser Tyranids began to break formation in panic, seeking guidance from a voice that was not there, anymore.

And then they came out of the deep dark.

The Krakens, the space marine chapter designated to protect this sector, came in their ships decorated with horrifying visages of creatures that haunted the deep oceans, and their combined fire blasted with righteous fury into the swarm of the Devourer.

Seeing no chance to enter this zone without great losses at this time, the greatest of the hiveships began to retreat, calling all of the lesser beings who could listen through the Net and vanished into the nothingness.

"First among equals" is sort of the "Germanic Thing"-thing - A gathering of all free men allowed to voice their opinion on an issue, be it law, war or other matters that concerned the whole tribe / collective of tribes in an area.

However I thought having the entire chapter debate over something might be a tad bit coutner productive - So that's why I came up with the bit about having the headmaster of each group participating represent that group in the meeting.
It may however be that this "headmaster" is chosen by his fellow brothers as the best representative.

Fair enough. That said, I didn't do anything like make them have organic ink-shooters or anything.

>>27793000
Okay then. The Deep Caul, being high density space gas, instead creates a thick, dense fog that clogs shut atmosphere filters and is fatally toxic to almost every species that encounters it. Should the victim survive the toxicity, the gas settles into alveoli of the lungs and asphyxiates the victim.

The last time I heard something supposedly voiced by OP was "Iron Krakens", however the debate has not yet reached consensus with Anon.

Because Anon will rarely agree.

The other things are pretty much set in stone.

>>27792982
>>27792991

Ahab started to force the Krakens into the Space Shark's territory because he held a grudge against Typhon of the Red Wake, but his obsession with defeating his rival blinded his vision and he made several tactical mistakes that cost the Krakens many good lives.

Eventually, the Krakens abandoned Ahab as he wanted to lead a charge against a fortified Carcharodon position and he was executed by the Sharks.

Now, the chapters' relationship is still uneasy, as the Carcharodons are wary of the Krakens and the Krakens fear for a punitive strike from the Carcharodons, but efforts have begun to calm the distrust and the two chapters have had quite a few missions where they averted a planetary crisis by literally tearing invading ships apart in orbit with nothing but their tenacity and ferocity.

Since we're doing the horrors-of-the-deep / vikings theme, we could throw in some Norse mythology references or have them be guardians of archaeotech that's been long since forgotten. For example, Huginn and Muninn - two ancient ships that have the best sensors around, capable of detecting anything happening in the area near them.

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die

Huginn is an enormous stellar array. Unknowably ancient and of human make, it lies in the center of the nebula where even there it's powerful sensors can detect the movement of every asteroid, currents of the gasses, the makeup and cargo of vessels, even local disturbances in the Warp. It alone is the greatest of the Star Kraken's defenses as no enemy can hide it's sight.

Muninn is the brother archeotech to Huginn, a massive repository of all the information collected by Huginn. Within its memory banks lies a record of everything that has ever entered Huginn's range. All the secrets and hidden things seen by Huginn are kept by Muninn.

The monastery fortresses' lighthouses are massive array's of anti-ship weaponry. Let's say there are two archeotech Lighthouses, one on the flagship and the other on the main fortress.
>>
>>27793301
That's excellent.

What if the beacon on the Lighthouse is part of Huginn? To active it in combat capacity it needs to remotely draw on the full power of the Huginn array, rendering it temporarily offline.

Every time they use their most powerful space borne weapon, they leave their home vulnerable.
>>
>>27793301
Sleipnir - a jetbike? Or an ancient fast ship that uses archeotech and xenotech to move at breakneck speeds?

>>
>>27793372
The Lighthouses focus Huginn's power, blinding it to everything except what it's focused on. At the same time, it increases the clarity of Huginn's sensors. Using the Lighthouse means that Muninn could spit out a complete, realtime schematic of the afflicted ship down and give details down to which crew members are psykers and where the grav-plating has failed. The offensive power of the Lighthouse is a side effect.

"Two ravens flew from Odin's shoulders; Huginn to the hanged and Muninn to the corpses."

>Their philosophy is probably inspired by similar aspects of life/philosophy like the Drowned Priests:

They could have a similar rite of passage as well: instead of drowning in sea water, members of the chapter are "drowned" in the void, ejected from an airlock and made to withstand the vacuum unprotected.
>>
>>27793515

Very much this, but that would require the rite of passage happening "after" the whole resources to turn a human into a Space Marine have been spent.

Maybe have a tank of saltwater ready in the flagship and initiants taken from their slaves/serfs and recruiting worlds are drowned in that tank to see how strong their physical basis is to actually become a Star Kraken.
>>
>>27793570

they recruit/press-gang from voidborn and ship crews that they rescue, so it's pretty likely that all their aspirants have had close encounters with vacuum already.
>>
>>27792628
They generally recruit from the young, but they can take them from older ages, it just increases the chances of rejection. Of course, if you try to take a 30 year old or something they'll probably just die.
>>
>>27793436
So what they are Silver Skulls?
>>
>>27793570
A normal human can survive vacuum for 45-90 seconds. The ritual shouldn't be about withstanding anything, but rather about release of what you hold important - you have to exhale when exposed to vacuum or your lungs will explode - and for signs and portents that might arise as your body begins to shut down.

>>27793661

The whole idea of the Drowning rite of passage is to see whose physis and soul are strong enough to return from the dead.

Transporting this to the 40k-Verse wit the vacuum would mean to pretty much to let a possible aspirant be thrown out the airlock until he passes out, then pull him back in and see if he's capable to return to conscious on his own.

Seeing how it would be really fucking expensive in terms of time, effort and resources to let an initiate who's been implanted with all additional organs and underwent the whole transformation from human to Astartes be killed by this rite of passage before even seeing proper combat, I believe the rite should be applied when recruiting new initiates, not after completing them.

Chapter Master's relic is an ancient power spear, Gungnir, which can link with Sleipnir and is used to activate all its many systems, known only to the Chapter Master and his closest retinue.

Their first company is their first company, I don't see a need to define them in any other way than "the most experienced of the bunch with the cool armour". If a special name is needed, just call them the "Elites", because I think based on how much these guys have to rely on one-another maintaining the ship and in combat, they might have a close bond that sort of excludes non-firstcompanieros.

I believe having the ships crow with Space Corals would not make the Machine Spirit of said ships happy, because that fungus might actually start to affect the outer hull. But actually breeding said space corals in designated tanks within the larger ships with the slaves looking after them might be a neat idea, because they could be harvested as means of artificing on armour and weaponry as heraldry.

I believe the appointed Commodore of the Fleet is a primus inter paris of the Ten-flag council.

He shouldn't be all that different in wargear from the rest of the councilmen except for having a bitchin' helmet with awesome pauldrons.

And yeah, mechandrites. he should have all eight mechandrites as somebody implied further up (veterans get more extra limbs the more they progress ranks).

Right now I believe he should be a "regular" marine, captain of the flagship and he should be less creepy but more calculating than Typhon.

The Freyrsvero

An ancient Dominator-class cruiser, the Freyrsvero was found adrift in the nebula, nonfunctional and with no crew, living or dead, onboard. Years were spent repairing the ship to add to the Kraken's fleet. However, the machine spirits that inhabited the vessel had gone mad and the ship attempted to attack any vessel or facility within range regardless of commands given. The ship was mothballed and the techmarines and bonded techpriests of the Star Krakens spent three centuries attempting to appease the spirits without avail. The ship sat unpowered and unmanned until the renegade fleet of Admiral Zyou Gunthrop, declared Excommunicate Traitoris for her iconoclasm, approached the nebula intent on capturing Huginn and Muninn. Outnumbered three to one in ships, the Krakens crewed and rearmed the Freyrsvero and set it in the path of the oncoming fleet. Backed by the Star Kraken fleet and their death song on their lips, the Freyrsvero roared to life. With the Lighthouse beacon disabling approaching enemy vessels, the Freyrsvero wreaked havoc upon the escort vessels of the Iconoclast fleet before plunging at Gunthrop's flagship, Judgment's Contempt. The flagship's guns shattered the Freyrsvero's void shields and it's lances burned gouges deep within it's armor. As the rest of the Kraken's fleet watched helplessly, entangled in combat with the enemy forces, as the Freyrsvero was slowly blown apart; it's weapon decks ripped open by macrocannon fire as its crew burned alive in the wash of plasma flames. Deep within the dying systems the machine spirits let loose one last scream of hatred and fury and plunged the Freyrsvero into the Judgment's Contempt. Her armored prow split open the armor of the Judgment's Contempt like an axe upon bare flesh. As she shuddered to a stop the remaining Nova Cannon shells in her magazines were detonated, vaporizing a full quarter of the Judgment's Contempt's mass and knocking it out of the fight.

The cloaks come from a planet on the outer edge of the Deep. A cold, wet, and dismal world barely habitable that slowly orbits a dim, dying star, those who would hold office among the Star Kraken journey there to hunt the Valravn. Fierce beasts that are part bird and part canine, they hunt by night and possess a vicious and almost human level of intellect. Worse still, should an Astartes be bested by one the Valravn will eat his flesh and take his form.
>>
>>27795399
It's not that hard. The Freyrsvero was me browsing wikipedia for Norse bits, remembering that Freyr had a magic sword, remembering that machine spirits can sometimes operate the machines themselves, then checking Lexicanum for info on Imperial Navy vessels, and going from there.

It actually brought to mind the live-ships of Robin Hobb's series based on the eponymous ships.

It's not necessarily coming up with ideas, it's more fleshing said ideas out to a point where they become appropriate for such a project in such time's due that is infuriatingly difficult for me.

But I'm working on a piece of writefaggotry as of now.
>>
>>27795726
Here is what I do. I try to fit it in a single post. I should be able to get my point across in 2000 characters since I view myself as writing something that would get a small blurb or sidebox in a codex. If I, or someone else, wants to later flesh it out so be it, but for the time being I'd rather toss out an idea, see the response, and modify or expand based on the reaction.

There's some GW fluff about a company of Space Wolves that encounter a planet of changelings on the far edges of the galaxy. The changelings disguised themselves as beautiful women to lure the Wolves in and attacked them during a feast. So these Valravn could be related or even be those things.
>>
So we're going with Viking stuff, but not towards the Space Wolves naming patterns right?

>Mǫkǫyll the Destroyer

A veteran of hundreds of campaigns, Mǫkǫyll earned his mecadendrites centuries ago. He currently sits as the First Company's representative on the Ten-flag Council, with a unanimous vote in his favour during the last election.

Mǫkǫyll earned his moniker after his retrieval of the great relic hammer which he wields from the burning remains of an Imperial temple complex on a planet being invaded by the foces of Chaos.

Rumors say that he took the hammer from the hands of a priest of the ecclesiarchy, who had intended to ship it off-world during the invasion. There are no witnesses to this claim however, and few would dare to lay such a claim at the feet of the cyclopean elder marine.

He subsequently caved in the chest of the Chaos lord in charge of the invasion with the hammer, leaving him to drown in his own blood beneath the shattered remains of his demon forged terminator armour, as per chapter custom.

He takes to battle in heavily customised terminator armour, wielding the Hammer which now bears his name as an icon as well as a weapon.

(more? or will I go back to being anon)

Older = cooler ancient tech = better = more powergamers try to use age as justification for being OP as fuck.

Add on a healthy dollop of the traditional "oldbeards are superior because of age, and age alone is sufficient", and you've got yourself a medley of Second and Third founding homebrews, and few new upstarts.
>>
>>27796109
Don't want them OP though, just ruthless ballers who lurk in the dark
>>
>>27796109
I know, but literally ninety percent of homebrew chapters are 2nd and 3rd founding. Oh, and either Dark or Cursed. Fucking retards.
>>
>>27796157
Yeah, that's exactly my point. That's why i think that this chapter being 26th founding, or even later as the vanguards of a 27th founding or some such would be really nice, and a bit of a breath of fresh... water?

Part of the chapter's theme is this deep, ancient, cold, inevitability, and part could also be this new kids on the block syndrome, where they are still adjusting to their heritage and inheritances, and the strange place they call home.

Take both the concepts of "knowledge of the deep dark places" and blend it with "the ocean is big, and i am small", and I bet you'd get some REALLY interesting social, political, cultural, and mental dynamics in the chapter.

>>27796187

The most important figure in the history of the Star Krakens is also its most reviled. Long ago, when the Star Krakens still had a home, the planet Giraud, a marine by the name of Ach-ab was chosen to be the Chapter Master. A devoted, talented marine, his dedication to the Emperor hid a deeply obsessive nature. As the years went on he focused his attention less on the enemies of the Imperium and more upon those who he believed had besmirched the name of the Star Krakens. Eldar corsairs, Ork freebootas, xenos mercenaries, any who had crossed the path of the Star Krakens and were not completely destroyed. Soon the list expanded to include friendly forces ranging from Guard regiments who struck the decisive blow of victory, Naval fleets whose bombardments ended wars from on high, to other Astartes chapters whose mere presence alongside in battle he saw as an insult to the honor of the Star Krakens. Finally, to the cheers of those ignorant to his true nature, he announced a grand crusade to rid the sector of the enemies of Mankind. The first few years were successful, Ork strongholds shattered, the xenos mercenary bands and their Rogue Trader patrons rooted out, and uprisings and rebellions smashed by the full weight of the chapter. However, several began to doubt Ach-ab's methods as the chapter's losses were slowly outpacing their replenishment. Soon Imperial forces began to feel his wrath as assistance requests were summarily denied, naval operations were disrupted, and even outright fighting between the Star Krakens and other forces erupted for the flimsiest of pretenses. Stretched thin and suffering from logistical problems, the Star Krakens were left weakened and vulnerable. Soon, it's enemies would come.

The Ten-Flag council

The Star Kraken’s fleet divides into ten battle barges, among which the largest is the flagship in the fleet and harbours the primary hubs for the several thousand slaves in the chapter’s employ. Each ship has a commandeering captain, and these captains form the ten-flag council: A meeting representing each of the ships as equal parts of the fleet, with the ten flags of each ship being carried by its respective captain and his first mate, who otherwise would take control of the ship if the captain was absent. In the ten-flag council, the fleet’s commodore is appointed. He is tasked of taking care of the flagship and its light systems which help navigate within the Deep for the entire fleet, as well as maintaining and caring for the chapter’s serfs in their hubs. He must also represent the chapter to any outsider who wishes to parlay. When a new commodore is appointed, the old one steps down and passes his ornate armour over to his successor, as well as the two will exchange control over their respective ships.
>>
>>27795884
Don't forget about the thralls too, dunno if that would account for Chapter strength
>>
>>27796226
Basic elements: The chapter is YOUNG. Young enough to have fighting Tyranids be a major part of their essence and history. They won't have the depth of experience that other chapters have, but they're more likely to be aggressive to prove their worth, too. The "Beast Hunters" type theme is very relevant here. Dreadnoughts likewise are hard to explain in such a young chapter.

My suggestion is to have their Tyranid Vets, who have likely been ripped almost to shreads by the Nids, be their Dreads. They're not ancient or anything, and they know no more lore than anyone else in the chapter, but they're also perhaps more apt to stay awake and fight, since they still havent proven their worth fully?

Particularly by imperial standards, they haven't been tried and tested like others have.

They live in a strange nebula, i think is what had been agreed on, and they have some examples of very ancient technology, Huginn and Muninn. The story of how they came by these things, rather than the Mechanicus swooping in and grabbing them from the new fledged chapter, might itself be an interesting tale.

A most curious event in the history of the galaxy emerged. Eldar corsairs reinforced by mercenary bands joined with Rogue Traders and Ork Freebootas launched raids against the now understrength and isolated Star Kraken battle groups. Overwhelming force and numbers slowly whittled down the Star Krakens as Ach-ab's advisors begged him to retreat and regroup at their homeworld, but Ach-ab refused to call off his crusade. His determination led him to be dragged around the sector by wily foes as they killed his chapter piecemeal. As the losses mounted his obsession grew, promising wild riches and rewards for those who could bring down the cowards who not fight him in open battle. At last dire news reached the flagship; Giraud was under assault. The defensive fleet drifting wrecks, their fortress monastery was under direct attack from the combined forces. Ach-ab ordered all Star Kraken forces to return immediately to Giraud but it was too late. The first ships dropped out of the Warp to witness the fall of the Star Krakens. It's fortress monastery, weapons silent, collapsing upon itself into a heap of rubble; as they watched in horror the combined firepower tore a hole through the crust and unleashed an eruption large enough to blast rocks and dust into orbit. In fire and thunder the planet Giraud ceased to be able to support life. Mad with grief and rage, Ach-ab ordered the remnents of his chapter to follow the enemy fleet. Tracking them to a remote star system, he prepared for them to unleash a final victory upon those who destroyed their homeworld. His lieutenants pleaded with him, showing them sensor readings that indicated it was all a trap but he cast them from his war room and ordered all Star Krakens to prepare for a combined ground/space assault. That final day Ach-ab spoke no words, resplendent in his Terminator armor he strode to the drop pods, his former lieutenants casting their glances aside.

>>27796014
Gonna try for something else on the drowning motif.

>TRIAL BY THE VOID

Being captured as a prisoner of the Krakens is a fate only spoken about in hushed whispers in the darkest corners of bars across the Segmentum Obscura.

The prisoner is held down by the many limed servitors that the chapter keeps, before being chained at hand and foot to a cross shaped adamantium rack. They are then read the rites of the Drowned by one of the Drowned Brotherhood's officials (Chapter Chaplains?), before being lowered into a pool of blood extracted from the bodies of the Giant Space Eels from which the chapter crafts it's leathers.

The blood is far more viscous than any other blood, and it's heavy nature allows it to easily flood the airways of the victim.

After a short period of thrashing against their restraints, the prisoner will inevitably shudder and lay still on the rack, at which point the Chaplain will raise the device, and resuscitate the dead prisoner. This process is repeated, sometimes for days on end, depending on the crimes that the Drowned Brotherhood perceive the prisoner to have partaken in.

Some talk of Fallen Astartes who have been prisoners for years in the keep at Mobius, whose screams have long become an eternal choking noise that echoes around the keep...

in my defense, I didn't really have a scale to measure. i thought myself to be advanced in the 40k fluff and gathered from my sources that "battle barge" is basically "hueg ship with lots of room to do non-combat activities and lots of guns for actual combat acitivies", so considering we were going for a fleet based chapter that's supposed to maintain a large population of thralls, I assumed "let's get as many of those as possible just to make sure we got enough". I wasn't aware as of yet that in context with other chapters, this concept would be out of proportions.

So please accept my apology and this moustache

Fair enough. But as for the drowned bit, it's actually a rather obscure vidya reference, but not as overt.

Could be that part of the Drowning rite of passage... I just imagine the aspirants lead to... I see a man made lake in the bowels of one of the vessels.

One by one, they're lead to the short, their heads forced into the brackish water.

"Now breathe deep the briny air and join us as brothers."
>>
>>27796466
You've got a point. Huginn and Muninn are great concepts, but they need work.

Huginn provides the computing power that helps the Lighthouse navigate and be such an effective weapon, but also works as a more passive sensor net.

I'd also say that Mobius is probably close to, if not a part of the Huginn/Muninn array.

a sky fortress orbiting around Mobius consumed by savage storms. the occupants of Mobius just knows of the persistant mythical storm, and course a trail is to navigate it as it travels across the largely sea-covered planet?

course that can just be a "small" recruitment base of some other nature and name.
>>
>>27796718
Yeah, I actually re-read the void thing after I'd written that.

I still kinda like the idea of them drowning prisoners in the blood of the space monsters, but I could easily re-write that to have them held in airlocks or something that are opened just long enough for them to choke out...

I think I like that better actually now that I wrote it down

Sure, I seen him; seen him loike Ii's lookin' at ye naow. It 'appened long ago... so long ago now. I woz leadin' a detatchment a' Nid killers into an infested asteroid, right intah the haart of the beast! We came in hot and loud; we killed 'em in droves we did, 'till there was nuthin' left but the haunting silence of space.

That is, until we came upon.... it.

We sent one of our scouts on top of what looked loike a giant mountain to see if there was any more 'Nids ta kill. The second that young lad laid foot on that accursed soil the beast sprung it's trap. Enormous he was... so big that when one of our 'eavies fired a blast 'a plasma it's way it only singed what was left of the scout it was eatin'.

I could'a sworn I heard it laugh I did! I led my men inta a vicious battle but alas, we were no match for it. It killed all of me crew until it was just me and him. I charged and buried me lance deep into it's eye, but that only made it angrier it did...

It ripped me arms off pretty as you please and hurled me into the depths a space. T'was only by the will of the Emprah that I survived to tell you this tale today.

Where is he now you ask? I know not and you'd be a damned fool to go out and look for it. I kept a memento of it I did; a chunk of it's claw they found stuck in my shoulder.

Battle barges house 2-300 marines and heavy armour, apothecarion and the rest of the stuff needed for prolonged campaigns, Fleet chapters more often than not have upgrades for complete self-sustenance for indefinite voyages.
Strike cruiser houses about a company and less advanced armoury and apothecarion.

Or you could have them have a Ramilies station and a few SCs, lexicanum's your friend.

No need to apologise, I'd gladly help as this chapter seems cool, but I'm about to go to sleep so I get mad when I think the state it'll enter the archive.
>>
>>27796718
the sea for the marines is the void, the sea for the recruits is the violent and harsh sea of their homeworld; Mobius.

Trails are on Mobious, if you make it there and excell, the sea of the stars; the void, will become your home (mindblown for the recruits as the experience a darkness deeper, vaster, harsher and more unforgiving then on their homeworld).

>>27796531
Settling into the drop pod, his former advisers approached him one last time to call it off, to swallow his pride and find a new home for their chapter. He spit at them and cursed their names, stripping them of their honors and ranks. Ordering his troops to their pods, no one made a move. Before he realized what was happening, the doors to his pod closed. Screaming obscenities through his vox, he pounded futilely at the walls of his pod as the marines, with heavy hearts, launched him, and him alone to the enemy encampment below. Throughout his descent he never stopped cursing the Star Krakens, claiming them all to be cowards, useless little men playing soldier while he alone knew the glory and responsibility. After what seemed like hours the pod touched down and his curses and swearing gave way to rage-fueled gibberish and gunfire. The fight was brief, it's end signaled by the cruel laughter and taunts of Tarellian Dogs. As the remnents of the once mighty Star Kraken fleet turned to leave the system, the honeyed and belittling tongue of an Eldar captain sung through the vox system. Endlessly he mocked the Star Krakens for their failures and tried to provoke their wrath by insinuating the humiliations that would be visited upon the corpse of their Chapter Master. With a heavy heart, Jehu, the first of Ach-ab's lieutenants to ask him to turn his crusade aside, told the Eldar to do what he wished with the corpse and the relics contained on the body. There was no glory contained within them anymore, no valorous history, only the story of the madman who had made them orphans.

I know the uh... chapter is more viking then anything, but why not have some references to Coolridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner?

Like, you could have that the only survivor of the strike cruiser Albatross was the serf captain, who told of such terror and wonder as they lied becalmed within the deepest void.

Extremely ancient for a serf, his maddening years lost with nothing but the cries of the dead crew and the death wails of astartes have left him with an amazing wisdom and insight, given in the form of parables and such.

The Albatross is both his court and his asylum, located within the shoals of the Deep, willing to speak to any Kraken brave or foolhardy to seek out the Ancient Mariner.
>>
>>27796834
How about: they started as fighting Chaos, then adapted their tactics to fighting Nids

Give 'em a homeworld, too. How the fuck are you going to get recruits in the middle of a pitch-black nebula?

A bit of write faggotery of cliche guard is saved by the SM, Kraken wankery.

The trooper ducked behind the burnt out wreck of the chimera, the chasing bolters shots rang like loud bells signifying his endtime.

The trooper breathed in deeply and felt the filtration unit in his rebreather whine in return with the action. The air was stale as usual; this dustbowl world was so choked with rad-winds from some long forgotten war that venturing without the bulky rebreathers was a death knell.

Howling barks and echoes followed when the bolters went silent, deep thumps of metal on the blood brown soil as the monsters finally came for him.

The trooper methodically checked his weapon and charge left. Forty shots, no other cells, this was his last one.

Forty shots could maybe put one down, that is if he got all the shots off, traitor marines were hard to kill, the destruction of his whole company by only six of them was testament to that new learned fact.

This was it, time to go out like coward or hero.

The trooper prepared himself for one final effort and got to his feet, his rifle aimed toward the closest behemoth in brown scaled power armour, a monsters visage carved into the helmet, some sort of dragon with blasphemous symbols etched around it, he spat a curse and he fired.

The next thing the trooper knew, he was flying from where he thought he was, he went tumbling and falling into a clutch of dead guardsmen piled next to a blood filled crater.

His vision was blurred, he felt an acidic tang on his tongue, there was a burning, a slight one in his lungs, a pain shot through his hands, he looked down to find three of his digits from his right hand was blown to smithereens, his vision was clearing at least.

There was a growl of anger, or frustration ahead of him, he looked up to see one of the giant armoured figures trying to beat molten fire from his exposed head with an oversized power fist ripping shards of glowing metal from its breastplate.

>>27796834

As far as I recall, it's only been "recently" that Anon has decided the Krakens should be a young chapter that has a knack for fighting 'Nids apart from boarding/naval combat specialisation.

I'm not entirely pleased with this decision because I'd have loved the chapter to have a rich history of losing their homeworld and become the fleet based chapter in the asteroid cluster/nebula called the Deep and entrench themselves there, reactivating a grid of archeotech stellar lighthouses that interacted with Huginn and Muninn and clubbering open some Space Hulks to "retrieve" (I prefer "loot", but yeah, they'z no Orkz 'ere, dey izn't) artifacts and materials for their own chapter fleet.
>>
>>27796931
The troopers immediately used his left hand to look for a weapon; his lasgun was just with him...

Then he realised the blow that landed him here, whatever it was, had pulverized his lasgun, but also overcharged it and made the thing explode.

His vision shadowed as another of the giant’s began to approach him, a long and glowing blade naked and deadly in its corrupted hands.

The trooper struggled to breath the radiation saturated air, his rebreather cracked and broken hanging limp from his mouth. He ripped it off and shouted in hoarse defiance at the approaching monster.

“It is inevitable, puny man, you are forsaken!” the thunderous booming voice of the giant thing in baroque and corrupted armour bellowed from a savage fanged mouth grille.

The blade drew back ready to dart into the guardsman’s throat and end him, the trooper closed his eyes and prayed for salvation.

The blow never came, the sword did not pierce, instead a clang resounded, he opened his weakening eyes and saw a trident trapping the blade a few inches away from his face.

A loud resounding blast of a bolter shot blew the maw-grilled helmet of the giant into a blast of black blood and bone.

Another giant in dark grey armour, similar to the archenemy marine jumped before him, his thrumming backpack facing the fallen trooper.
“Krakens! Strike without mercy!” the giant boomed as four more demi-gods appeared from beyond and engaged the monsters in battle.

The giant shot a dozen more shots as the sound and boom of giants clashing echoes toward the guardsman.

The warrior with the trident turned toward the trooper as the last of the traitor marines were butchered by a brutal, coral-like horn-headed giant with a power axe.
>>
>>27796939
I prefer them being an older Chapter, that used to fight Chaos, but now fights the Tyranids as well.

Being older gives them more time to get used to the Deep, as well as find all the archeo-tech that they use so well.
>>
>>27796861
They recruit from other ships, slaves taken as compensation for their assistance, their own chapter serfs, and from Imperial Naval vessels.

>>27796694
Huginn is a massive sensor array located in the Deep, the Lighthouses are basically giant focusing lens for Huginn, and Muninn is the data storage facility for all the information collected by Huginn.
>>
>>27796939
I would prefer for them to be an older chapter as well. The Nids are such a relatively new threat (M41 actually), that they'd only be around for less then 200 years.
>>
>>27796961
The space marine looked at him and growled something at him.

“My...lord...I...”the trooper said weakly, the rad-winds were stripping him of his life as his body succumbed to radiation.

The warrior knelt down to him and unclasped his helmet revealing a scarred and savage face, with a massive jaw and pale deathly skin and the eyes that drew a gasp of horror from the guardsman, they were like the pits of void, in his demented state the trooper mused whether they resembled the stygian depths from where such a monster came.

“Thank you, my lord...”

“I am not your master, I am War-Captain Sigeric, Star Kraken, we bring punishment to the enemy,” the giant explained matter of factly, its voice like gravel in the harsh dusty rad-winds of the dustbowl.

“I am dying now, sir,” the guardsman gasped.

“You are drowning, guardsman, I cannot help you.”

“I...I am not drowning, I am irradiated. I am a dead man.”

The giant simply nodded, “You are drowning, so drown with the knowledge that the Emperor is pleased with your service. Your drowning is an act of faith.”

With that warrior grabbed his dog-tags and yanked it of his neck, the trooper’s last sight was the warrior hanging it from his belt as a dozen teardrops of fire streaked down the half revealed sky.
>>
>>27796939
>>27796978
>>27796982

The whole point is that everyone and their dog has an ancient chapter full of grizzled badasses and lore long lost to the Imperium, with commensurate weapons and political power.

Can't we have a fresh chapter to face a fresh threat from beyond the galaxy's edge? Do we always have to tread the same ground?

Limitations breed creativity. Shed your crutches, /tg/, and make this a really interesting homebrew.

I'd prefer them not to mess with the Guard at all, if possible. Squids are furtive, and krakens are straight-up mythical, so hearing the name Star Kraken would be through rumors and hearsay.

Maybe some anecdotal accounts of Guardsmen being saved by them on the fringes of the Deep, but not a lot. Leave them to their nebula and fighting Chaos and Tyranids.

Glad you guys like. The Kraken grant him this respite if only out of pity and some form of... respect, perhaps?

They're waiting for him to die, of course, but it is whispered in hushed tones that the Ancient Mariner is nothing more then a spectre upon the haunted Albatross, a warp ghost remaining to continue his work.

We can even have a Chapter History.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Your Kraken was either brave or foolhardy to seek out the Albatross and the Ancient Mariner. You do not speak of what he told you, but it is known that whatever it was, it is of great and grave importance to your.

>Unique character, ho!

To those new to the Star Krakens Sixth Company, the aura of awe and reverence that surrounds Techmarine Wotan Hamiltonius seems to have no basis. He is small for a Marine, mild-mannered and completely blind, rejecting any occular implants. Those veterans who remember the Battle of Aegir's Shoal are quick to correct any misconceptions. The Shoal's Imperial outposts were under heavy attack from a Tyranid splinter fleet, and the Kraken fleet rushed to their aid. During the resulting battle, the Lighthouse suffered heavy damage. Pulling back from the field, it was pursued by an aggressive Tyranid suicide-ship, intent on clinging to the ship and dragging it down to oblivion. While in the process of making repairs to the limping Battle-Barge, Hamiltonius was dragged overboard by a gravity current, his helmet torn off by a near-mortal impact with the edge of the hull. Decompression set in rapidly, and his comrades thought him lost as his body drifted into the path of the damaged Lighthouse's flickering beam. As the dying Techmarine crossed the beam, however, his Machine-spirits called out to Huginn and the ancient machine responded. The energy of the beam enervated him, and casting off his helmet Hamiltonius drifted alone in space, blood pouring from the sockets where his occular implants had overloaded.

What happened next is a matter of hearsay, but the most prevalent rumor is that the Tech-Marine rode the beam directly at the heart of the Tyranid beast, tearing it to shreds with his armoured fists. Though Hamiltonius refuses to comment on the Battle of Aegir's Shoal, to this day he seems perfectly comfortable in a vacuum without a helmet, and shows greater agility and dexterity while blind than most of his fully-sighted battle-brothers do.
>>
>>27796895

The entire point of the Star Krakens is that their fleet is pretty much like hivefleet kraken: A force so devastating it appeared like a single, giant creature that devastated its prey with its merciless embrace and terrible bite.

So I imagined that the Deep was a huge cluster of asteroids and nebula inside a sub-sector from whose planets the chapter drafted its recruits or that there were habitable planets right at the outside of the nebula with which the Krakens traded for goods and thralls where they also would recruit their initiates.

So yeah, I think giving them a single homeworld with a monastery is not really going to help this design.
>>
>>27797032
I respectfully disagree.

With them being so young, they woulnd't have the clout to amass all the cool fluff we cooked up.
>>
There's more threats then Chaos Marines and Tyrandis (or any other WH40K Codex) out there in the void. Maybe some other less known (no codex) Chaos/Xeno (both-in-one) threat?
>>
>>27797039
Well the thing is all of the guard are dead. I am implying that they waited until most were dead.

Because I am sure if they wanted, they could have intervened long before.
>>
>>27797036
It is supposed to refer to Vikings taking slaves.

>>27797032
They don't have to be that old. A few hundred years is all we'd need to fit in most of the fluff we've come up with.
>>
>>27797070
Not the guy you're responding to, but a word of caution. "Cooking up cool fluff" and building everything around that, is a big part of what got the Knights Inductor into the shitshow they're in now.
>>
>>27797032
>>27797070
So how about this: new Chapter, let's say 25th or 26th Founding, they're all mutated and shit, can't find a homeworld so they decide to crusade and find the Deep. The Imperium knew about it, but never went in because it was unnavigable. Krakens said fuck it and went in. They stumbled around until they find what they think is a Space Hulk, but it's actually the Lighthouse ship, completely intact. This allows their fleet to competently navigate the Deep, and find all the cool shit they've amassed over the last few hundred years.
>>
>>27797098
I would honestly say a millenia or two.

Maybe they could be part of the 21st founding. Their curse of course being the obsession of Ach-ab that resulted in the loss of their homeworld, but granted them the Deep.
>>
So the condensed version of this thread is you want this scene except in 40k and with viking pirates with squid motifs?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E794rTPa4nA
>>
>>27797120
The who?
>>
>>27797049
A little too much?
>>
>>27797123
Seems pretty cool to me. A big part of a young chapter is THEM adapting to their environment, not forging the environment to their needs. They have to take what they can get, and what you've described combined with the previous fluff seems very appropriate for this chapter.

They stumbled on the relics of the ancient gods. Now, those relics are part of who they are, for better or worse.
>>
>>27797141
Sorry about that

>>
>>27797151
Not at all, I love it.

Literally everything I've written for this thread so far has had plenty of drowning in it though, so I might be biased
>>
>>27797155
I just don't want the Deep to be TOO much of a treasure trove of lost tech, don't want to build the Star Krakens up too much and make them unstoppable if they ever emerge.

Oh, maybe bring in the aforementioned idea of those fringe worlds on the edge of the nebula, and the Krakens pop out from time to time to recruit or defend
>>
>>27797043
Eh. Replying to myself, but since we already have a few cool ships, should the Albatross have anything cool other then the maddened captain that haunts it's halls?

Perhaps some kind of weapon or device that they would wish to make use out of, just... it's a haunted ship.
>>
>>27797098
Thrals, which would be hung in the trees for the gods, not turned Vikings themselves.

Not having a home world pretty much ruins any cultural attachment. People that are already void born know to much already and are way to included, while a home world can still carry the mysteries and tales as they occationaly get to become stars in the skies themselves.

Trälar (Thrals) are just servants.
>>
>>27797196
I think that's a good compromise.
>>
>>27797205
Maybe if they anger the Mariner the Deep becomes more difficult to navigate for a while
>>
>>27797196
Well, when i say treasures, i mostly just mean the lighthouse and Huginn/Muninn. Not much else.
>>
I'm off to dinner. This has been super fun

>>
>>27797227
Or that they just dont know what the fuck they do and just trade with Mechanicus Explorators. So standard equipment as any other chapter.
>>
>>27797123
Huginn and Muninn along with the Lighthouses are what allows them to navigate the Deep so easily. The way I've been picturing it is that the Lighthouses are focusing arrays for Huginn that were found and added to the Kraken's battle barge and their central fortress asteroid.
>>
>>27797256
Damn. Now I'm hungry but it's 2 AM here and I'm to lazy to make something. I guess I'll go to sleep hungry.
>first world problems
>>
I like what I see so far, but what if we add an interesting twist to things?

What if we make them human instead of Space Marines? Keep everything else in there like the archeo-tech and their specialty for fighting Nids except they're a human faction now.
>>
>>27797232
Maybe. Probably leads credence to the whole Warp Ghost theory.

Which is why they can't take the damn whatever made the Albatross special.

Besides the fact that the Albatross is a leaky, half-flooded ship falling apart at the seams, the Mariner knows everything about his ship that goes on in there.

And he would know if they removed the Harpoon, a 'lance' weapon that instead of firing beams of light, launches a tungsten spike at near relativistic speeds. Similar to a nova cannon, but without the whole HUUUUUGE explosion.
>>
>>27797315
But then they can't wear cool armor
>>
>>27797226
Then its a good thing these are just space marines referencing Vikings and not actual Vikings. The Star Krakens force their culture upon the people they take.
>>
Is there anything specific that someone wants written up?

I'm loving this idea, but I'm drawing blanks on my own stuff here atm
>>
>>27797315
So the idea you have to contribute to a thread specifically about the creation of a Space Marine chapter is that we shouldn't create a space marine chapter?

Sure they can! We can even keep the squid/kraken theme with them.
>>
>>27797123
>>27797155

i can pretty much live with that, as long as we include the rimworlds around the Deep.

They could have a grey-ish attitude, some worlds support the Krakens because they protect them, others stay lawful-stupidly loyal to the Imperial Excommunicate Traitoris and try to blast them on sight. This way, we can still have a cultural affiliation while maintaining a fleet based coredesign which relies on getting their hands on whatever they can get.

>>27797196

I doubt you're gonna find any "real" treasure aside from the Huginn/Muninn device and the Lighthouse grid (IF we're still talking about there being a grid of lighthouses to disturb navigation) /lighthouse ship.

Maybe a space hulk, who knows, but apart from that you'd probably only find old spaceship wrecks that have been crushed by the asteroids and random trinkets - So probably only stuff the merchants on the habitable rimworlds would like to have.

>>
>>27797409
I think we're going with there only being two Lighthouses, one on a ship and one at a fortress.
>>
>>27797432
Eh. I was just trying to think of something to make the Albatross special, but... I suppose it's already special enough because it's the Ancient Mariner's... resting place? Asylum? Who knows...

Honestly, who cares. If you seek the Mariner's Rime, that's your lot.
>>
>>27797330
Wait what? Explain this Harpoon thing further.
>>
>>27797447

Okily-dokily!

So Huginn is the ship and Muninn would be the fortress?

With this in mind, would Muninn be attached to a habitable planet that's turned into a deathworld with tons of huge monsters or would it be on a random hollowed asteroid where the Star Krakens kept the Thralls/Serfs they cannot take on their fleet to take care of the fortress and nurturing some sort of food income by the means of glowing space fungus that's been mentioned earlier?
>>
>>27797481
Errr... like I said. It was just a terrible idea.

Just a macro weapon on the Albatross that hits like a lance. A single solid projectile that could pierce the armor of a ship and hull it.

If it hits, of course.
>>
>>27797432
What?
>>
>>27797497
No, Huginn is a massive stellar sensor array located with the Deep, Muninn is the data storage facility for Huginn. Muninn should more than likely be located at one of the fortresses, but I imagined it as a separate space station.
>>

Concrete stuff

>Newer chapter, from the 39th or 40th Millennium
>Based out of the Deep, a dark, ink-black nebula in the Segmentum Ultima
>Homeworld: Mobius, an asteroid cluster fortress hidden far within the Deep.
>Have found cool gear that allows their fleet to navigate through the Deep as no other force can.
>Lighthouse, a ancient ship with a guiding light on the prow that allows the fleet to navigate
>The Lighthouse also has offensive capabilities - a massive interference signal, capable of overloading any spacecraft - or even localized Hivemind transmissions.
>more importantly Huginn and Muninn
>Huginn - An immense stellar array that can map the entire Deep, down to the movement of every asteroid and even local disturbances in the Warp. No enemy may hide from it.
>Muninn - A repository of all the information collected by Huginn. All the secrets collected and hidden things seen by Huginn are kept by Muginn.
>Experts in space combat and ship-to-ship boarding, having access to Breacher Siege Squad wargear found aboard the Lighthouse
>They fight as the mythical Kraken fought: using terror warfare, they stalk their prey within the Deep, then emerge and attack without mercy.
>Have a religious fervor for the Deep, as recruitment involves "drowning" neophytes in the void of space, then resurrecting them as full Battle-Brothers
>much of their culture involves deep sea motifs

So, if the thread still has room, I've decided to give some fluff about the Mariner! Or at least writefagging. It's my first. Be gentle.

Audvald didn't know what to think, as the vessel filled the view screen. It was old and dilapidated, but the name was still as bold in it's burnished gold as it was in life. The Albatross, Asylum for the Ancient Mariner.

His boots echoed upon the tarnished decks of the once proud vessel, he could only imagine that clamor of thralls and astartes going about their business. Now? Only the slight creaking of the worn grav-plates.

"Why are you here, young Kraken? Have you come to hear of glories old... or glories anew?" There was a single man sitting upon the command throne, huddled and skeletal. The Ancient Mariner. The old captain of the Albatross. Sightless eyes gazed at Audvald.

"I see you, young Kraken. I see who you might be. I see you taking a foolish path, the first step visiting this tomb." He laughed, a raspy sound that echoed in the chamber.

"Oh, but the glory that would be yours! The honours that would be heaped upon you! Songs will be sung of your deeds. But..." He turned his head to the side. "That path does not see you living through the century. But you are at a fork in a road, two paths divergent. The other path, I see silver and black. I see hideous monsters who's baying cries you answer with the silent of the Deeps. Savior of the Imperium, time and time again... but with no one to know." He stroked his chin, once more looking at Audvald.

"Hnnn... what do you choose? Glory and death... or servitude and life. It does not matter. My throat is dry and I tire of your continued presence. Leave this place, you have your Rime."

(Eh. Sucky writefaggotry is suuuuucky.)
>>
>>27798667
You arent committing. You are becoming vague with it. Be more straight, talk about this foolish young Kraken's first action when they attack a heretic force and then he hearkens back to what the Mariner said.
