You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Currently, you're about to be subject to the horror that is BALLROOM DANCING. ...well, it might be useful in the future. Maybe.

Doesn't mean that you like it, though.
>Guard Rank: FERRET
>Congratulations, you are now a lazy Ferret!
>Ferrets are cute and rather smart, but they kind of smell...
>The Princess now likes you a tiny little bit!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

Princess Marianne watches on in cruel delight as Pauline pulls you into the room.

"Mr. Reinhold, I heard all about your tale of gallantry yesterday! And you got to show off in front of THREE pretty girls, you sly dog!" Pauline says, her cold old lady hands still a vice around your own.
"I don't know about that, Nicolette and Sylvie did most of the work..." you reply nervously.
"Oh, you're too modest!" she lets go of your hands to playfully nudge you in the chest. "But anyways, I suppose we should get on to the day's lesson..."

The Princess follows the two of you to the middle of the room and crosses her arms as she waits for Pauline to begin.

"Alright, we have about two weeks' worth of classes left before you go to the big ball in Marconetti... I wish I could attend myself, but travel doesn't really agree with these old bones..." Pauline says, pouting. "so, who would like to start off?"

i have been thinking this.... the princess has been eating alone in her bedroom for way too long. how about we slip her the sugesstion that she could slip down to eat with us, Nico, and sylvie in the kitchen, drop the pretences and just enjoy each others company. besides, She will become the ruler in time, she should get to know her people a bit better. it could help ease her lonelyness.
>>
"Um..." you begin, "how about the two of us start with whatever this dance is, and then you can show us where we need work?"
"Ooh, that's an excellent idea!" Pauline claps her hands together excitedly. "It's nice to see that you're showing some initiative, Mr. Reinhold!"

You then turn towards the Princess, and she is staring at you with an expression of pure anger. Maybe she was looking forward to watching Pauline manhandle you?

With a sigh, she approaches you and flashes you another glance of "I want to punch you in the face" before relaxing her features into the same blank stoneface that she puts on when Monique's around.

"Alright... put this hand here and that hand there..." Pauline mumbles as she manually positions the two of you into the proper dancing form. "Aaaad begin! You take the lead, Mr. Reinhold."
"You'd best pray that your hand doesn't slip..." the Princess mutters while glancing at your left hand, which is resting on her hip.
"I'll be extra careful, Princess," you reply rigidly.

Working from what you remember from the last time you were forced to do this, you step forward, beginning the dance... taking SPECIAL CARE not to step on the Princess's feet or let your hand slip from its precarious position, you move from memory and things seem to be going well.

STEP

STEP

TURN

You're dancing like a pro! ...well, not a pro, but you -think- you're doing decently. You haven't stepped on any feet or let your hand slip to Where It Does Not Belong, and things are going pretty well.

"Very good, Mr. Reinhold!" Pauline says, beaming. "One would have never thought that you'd just started this less than a week ago! And you too, Princess, you're moving a lot more naturally than before! One thing, though..."

Pauline then walks up to the two of you and pushes you closer.

"You're too far apart!" Pauline says, smiling happily.
"Er- I'm not sure if it's appropriate that-" you stammer.
"Nonsense, this is -practice- for Prince Emilio's party!" Pauline replies, shaking her finger. "And I just know that that lout of a prince Giancarlo is going to be there, and he's sure to try and pull even closer than this!"

Upon hearing that name, the Princess rolls her eyes and sighs.

"I suppose she's right... I doubt marriage will have curbed his tendencies any, after all," the Princess says. "And at least I can be assured that any hand slips on your part actually -would- be an accident."
"Er, yeah..." you reply, unsure of what to say.

With that, you continue going over the steps, slowly getting more used to the repetition... though Pauline pushes the two of you closer together every time you try and back away.

Because god damn it, you DO NOT want to make this any awkward than it already is.

After what seems like HOURS of dancing, Pauline finally signals that the day's lesson is over. Finally free of your prison of awkwardness, you release the Princess as quickly (and carefully) as you can.

Duels are seen as a most manly and noble affair, as long as you keep to the rules. That's how Monique's family made it into the nobility, among many others.

The most respected way to win a duel is to force submission, hitting vital organs is less sporting.

You can totally go all THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE and cut dudes' heads off and get away with it though, but it makes you like a barbaric piece of shit and you're liable to get assassins sent after you.

Great mental image.

Are duels particularly common? And how exactly does one become ennobled through dueling? Embarrass enough of the reigning king's political rivals?

Side question: You hinted in a couple places that there are requirements to qualify for knighting. Do we know them, or should we ask in character?

>>27769016
Does she hate herself? I archive binged so maybe I missed something, but she doesn't seem self-loathing. Perhaps too conscious of her social position and responsibilities, but she certainly doesn't hate herself.
>>
>>27769158
She has on multiple occasions expressed the sentiment that she believes people just inherently hate her and don't want to be around her at all.

That's self-loathing or at least incredibly low self-esteem if I ever saw it.

I don't want to quite jump the gun in case I'm reading it wrong, but the root cause of this probably has to do with her mother's death.

"Um..." you turn to the princess. "...thanks for the dance. Sorry if I overstepped my bounds with that suggestion..." you say with a slight bow.
"...hmph." the Princess places a hand on her forehead, and then looks at you. "I don't appreciate you volunteering me like that, but I suppose that's what Pauline had planned anyways... just don't do it again."
"Ooh, you're such the gentleman!" Pauline says, grabbing onto your arm. "I'm sure the Princess enjoyed dancing with you, she's just being shy!"

Princess Marianne doesn't reply to that comment, just crossing her arms instead.

"Umm... anyways, thanks for the dance lesson," you say to Pauline, bowing slightly as you free your arm.
"Any time! I'll be seeing the two of you tomorrow, so don't be late!"
"I wouldn't dream of it,' the Princess feplies.

With that, you follow the Princess out of the room and into the hallway.

"I was thinking..." you turn to her as you walk.
"Hm?" the Princess glances at you.
"...if you get roped into dancing with this Giancarlo guy or someone else who you don't want to be bothered with, how about you tug on your earring or whatever and I'll pop in and make up a story about your father wanting to ask you something," you say. "That way, you'll be able to get out of it."

Upon hearing this suggestion, the Princess raises an eyebrow in surprise.

"That..." she begins, laughing a bit "...may be a good idea. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind."

"I suppose you really are smarter than you look."

Really? I can't think of any sixteen year old who willingly lives such a heavily regimented life. I mean, she's the one who leads Reinhold to each of her classes, and she's been at this for years. She willingly locks herself up at night, doesn't associate with her people her own age who aren't servants, and even her days off keep to a tight schedule. She's never complained about the work, only the personalities involved. She adores her father, but the only people she gets along with besides him don't know how she really acts, and the amazing evolving ferret swordsman (maybe).

Every 16 year old thinks they're a princess. She's been generally unpleasant for years; I think her being nicer when she's not in princess mode suggests that it's the princess bit that's causing most of the problems. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

>Are duels particularly common? And how exactly does one become ennobled through dueling? Embarrass enough of the reigning king's political rivals?
Impress the ruling classes enough with your mad swordery skills, usually. Generally involves either being formally given a title, or "YOU CAN COME OVER TO MY HOUSE AND MARRY MY DAUGHTER."

>Side question: You hinted in a couple places that there are requirements to qualify for knighting. Do we know them, or should we ask in character?
Show the king that you are skilled enough to deserve it, basically. There are other knights around other than Vincent and Gregory, but they don't generally hang around the castle.

Yeah, Gregory was a fill-in.

I'm not seeing it. Like you said. She doesn't complain about the duties but the people involved. That seems more like someone who has problems with people over anything. Obviously, having to deal with these people as a princess makes this problem worse but I don't see it as the real root of the issue. It's just complicating things; not causing them.

still, she should have a more rounded education than this. she needs to learn how to balance a bank book to help ensure our kingdom will keep it's finances in order. diffrently languges to speak that is IF there are others to learn, everyone might speak common in this world setting and other kinds of classes.

Learning magic is pretty much guaranteed longevity, and you don't even need to become a lich for it.

Look at Arnaud; he's not a dedicated mage, and yet he's able to beat the shit out of us even though he's served the Royal Family for, what, 5 generations? And they all presumably learned magic as well, extending their lifespans.
>>
>>27770343
This is Princess Guard Quest. Not Princess Maker Quest.
>>
>>27770001
Neat.

So, magic vs. non-magic. Magic has the edge in versatility, can non-magic keep up? Or do the best swordsmen do both?

How hard is it to learn magic? Is Reinhold's progress typical or slow or fast? (you don't have to answer if it'd be OOC knowledge)

Could we get a rough map of the countries mentioned so far? I think I understand where things are, but after the first step away from Granache I'm lost.

What's Reinhold's general education level? He's got the basics down, but he's gone from the basics to the equivalent of a world-class college level education. The fact that he's following it at all is pretty impressive.

Lastly, life experiences. Brothel-->army we know, anything else? Or just a constant refrain of self-taught sword education? How did Reinhold come to ENTER the tournament in the first place?
>>
>>27770369
I think Arnaud might be one of them not-humans in a human form rather than just a really good mage.

In addition to one of the aforementioned responses, let's bring up the topic of encouraging Marianne to return to her practice of magic. Kinda transition to it ad hoc.

We can always bring up the age/beauty related points if she's really against practicing, but from what's been said so far, there isn't any obvious disposition of hers that detests training in the arcane.

As long as we don't come off snobbish or a know it all (unlikely) we should be fine.
>>
>>27770785

>>
>>27770763
That's Shirou with Excalibur, so I'm guessing Fate?
>>
>>27770785
That's dumb. It isn't our place to suggest that kind of thing at all. Maybe ask why she stopped or isn't practicing but anything else is way too presumptuous.

Furthermore, we're a guy who only learned about magic and how to cast a fucking night light a few days ago and now we're preaching the benefits of magic to someone who's probably better and much more knowledgeable with it then us. There's no way we're not going to come off as a know-it-all.
>>
>>27770857
Then turn it around. Show that we're interested in the ramifications of magic and ask her which ones are big, besides the obvious direct impact spells have in being cast.

Start up a dialogue. Unlike certain other character archetypes, it's not like Marianne's so quiet that whatever we say or ask will transition to an awkward silence.
>>
>>27771025
It's not awkward silence people are worried about, it's making her mad.

Deciding to keep quiet so as not to potentially spoil the Princess's mood, you quietly follow her to her next destination. And as you expected, it's that pinnacle of tedium that is known only as ETIQUETTE.

At this stage of our relationship, making her mad is fine; she reacts because she is beginning to care about us.

What should be more worrying would be if she was indifferent to whatever we said or did, or - as Archelon hinted when she had the same blank face when Monique was around - concealed her emotions around us.

Besides, at the cost of one or two relationship points - which we can afford now - we can then raise even flags down the road - either with Marianne herself, or with the people around her. It's a risk-reward investment that should be reflected on more, rather than completely ignored.

>So, magic vs. non-magic. Magic has the edge in versatility, can non-magic keep up? Or do the best swordsmen do both?
Gregory's a magic swordsman and he made Knight, and it's assumed that Arnaud uses magic as well. I'll let you guys extrapolate from there.

>How hard is it to learn magic? Is Reinhold's progress typical or slow or fast? (you don't have to answer if it'd be OOC knowledge)
Magic is too hard for most people to learn (it's the initial meditation part that trips them up) He was quick to access the ability to form Script, and his progression thus far has been somewhat slower than usual.

>Could we get a rough map of the countries mentioned so far? I think I understand where things are, but after the first step away from Granache I'm lost.
Working on it.

>What's Reinhold's general education level? He's got the basics down, but he's gone from the basics to the equivalent of a world-class college level education. The fact that he's following it at all is pretty impressive.
He learned how to read in the brothel, and learned some other things in basic training. This is decidedly a step up.

>Lastly, life experiences. Brothel-->army we know, anything else? Or just a constant refrain of self-taught sword education?
Took up the sword as a little kid, kept at it in pretty much every spare moment until he was able to get the fuck out at the age of 13. There, he made his way to a non-shit city and joined the army.

>How did Reinhold come to ENTER the tournament in the first place?
His CO suggested that he make something of his constant swordsmanship practice. Things worked out better than expected.

>>
>>27771466
It's not crowding to make conversation with someone. There isn't some set limit on how much we can talk to her like there is with watering a plant. It's not a talk or not talk situation. What's going to make her mad isn't how much we talk to her, but what we talk about.

We're the only person she actually spends time with. Everyone else she sees everyday is just there to teach or bring her food. She doesn't have anyone but us to really talk to. I don't see any reason to fill so much of our time with her with silence when we're the only person in a position to actually be a friend she can have regular conversations with each day.

When youre with guys, it's fine to just talk about whatever jumps into your head, keeps things interesting. but with Women, most of the time it seems they mostly want a sounding board, someone to respond to them when they have a subject. So if they seem bored or annoyed usually the best thing to do is appear attentive and just wait.

"You actually apologized for bringing up my parents back during my first day here," you say. "I don't think that anyone has ever done that before. On that count at least, you're the kindest person I know."
"Wha..." the Princess looks at you, shocked. "You're actually bringing that up?"
"And compared to most of the people I've known throughout my life, working with you is pretty nice. You even actually care about random bakers and shopkeepers back in the city. Just from that, I'd say that you're worth knowing."

The Princess stares at you with the guilty expression of someone who'd just kicked a puppy. Unable to say anything to you, she covers her face and looks out the window.

"...so he really -is- that nice... that's just wonderful." she mumbles to herself.

Fortunately, the awkward silence is finally broken by the sound of the ancient butler's arrival.

"I apologize for my tardiness, but there was a bit of trouble with Mr. Niklaus and Mr. Gerhard in the hallway... anyways, let's get on with today's lesson."

He then goes on a LONG lecture on ballroom etiquette, the proper way to ask a lady to dance, the proper form to challenge someone to a duel, the proper volume to speak during a ball, proper subjects for speech -at- a ball... it's pretty clear that this is entirely in preparation for Prince Emilio's birthday, but you still can't help but feel that most of what he's saying is completely pointless.

But then again, what would a child of the streets know about proper noble etiquette?

Somehow, you manage to actually pay attention to THE ENTIRE LECTURE, and the class ends. Thankfully.

With a sigh, the Princess gets up from her seat and heads for the door. Taking that as your cue to go, you hurry closely behind her.

Yeah, I don't see how the princess is unpleasant. The only reason to think that is the OP. She doesn't seem like she goes out of her way to make people uncomfortable. She's got her demands, but as the future ruler, that's her right.

Apparently, everyone in the castle seems to think she's this giant walking asshole, but I don't see it. She hasn't been characterized this way. Maybe it's a problem of Telling, not Showing, but when the showing and telling are two conflicting things, I'm going to go with the showing.

We need to take notes on this. Like explicit notes, for archelon to write out a summary of. Might practice challenging people later, when we're alone. The benefit of courtly ettiquite is someone like us normally doesn't have to talk at all.

But we've got a slightly different dynamic going on in private, because there's position, and there's people. People are not just their position.

I can't imagine Reinhold pulling off the "you talkin' to me" routine. He would probably start laughing at his own reflexion.

Or were you talking of something else?
>>
Hey Archelon.

Would it have been possible to reject being the princess's guard? Originally this was Royal Guard Quest.
>>
Without saying a word, you follow the Princess down a few hallways and up a stairwell, finally stopping at the door to her room. She reaches for the doorknob, but then sighs and turns to face you.

".........it seems that I really was wrong about you," Princess Marianne says to you. "Though I still find it... -difficult- to believe, it seems that you really were being sincere. I apologize for doubting your intentions."
"Don't worry about it, Princess," you say, bowing slightly.
"In any event, good night."

>>

Not that guy but I've dealt with people like this in real life. She's honestly not that bad.

It's like calling a guy you cut off on the road an asshole for flipping you off and honking at you. He's just mad you almost made him crash. I don't judge people quickly.

Then again, I'm really damn patient and calm so there's that.

Archelon, I think you need to keep strict control of dialogue.

And also try to steer people from metagaming or playing a 2D cut out. Or from using shitty dialogue because they think it's funny on an impulse.

Good night, with a smile.

It's kind of hard to maintain strict control of dialogue on a quest that is essentially entirely social interaction. It leaves little for the players to actually do.

There was already issues of low interactivity back when everyone was choosing to not talk all the time. You may as well tell him to just writefag the whole thing.

"Goodnight, Princess," you reply.

Sighing yet again, the Princess turns around and opens her door.

Hey Archelon! Can we now spend x time doing stuff thanks to our nifty pocketwatch?

By the way, guys, we really should be going over the shit we want to do and spending time each day accomplishing it. Here's a start:

Training:
Swordsmanship (from Arnaud? Starting a sword training club where we teach guards how to better sword so we can improve ourselves by teaching, and maybe get a two or three on one sparring session? Sir Gregory is a swordy kind of guy if I recall right, and maybe he can teach us how to magic sword! i.e. how to utilize magic in combat.)

Magic (Sylvie pls. We need more spells, and lots of them! Niklaus's need for our ass-uh, assistance? Gregory? Arnaud? Hell, Sir Vincent is an Earth guy and so is Sylvie, we can learn shit from them and just metal it up yo.)

Drawing (practice! Citrine's wealthy art guy! totally not lewd sketching sessions. ...maybe lewd sketching sessions?)

All those emotions and manners and whatnots have gotten you hungry, so you head downstairs to the kitchen. And as per the usual, you spot Nicolette and Sylvie loitering in front of the doorway.

"Hey, Reinhold!" Nicolette waves to you.
"Hi..." Sylvie does the same.
"Hey, you two," you reply. "You seem to be in a good mood, Nicolette."
"Eh?" Nicolette looks at you, and then gazes off into the distance. "Dunno what you mean by that..."
"Ehehe..." Sylvie smiles evilly. "Nicolette's all happy because she got praised by Sir Gregory!"
"God damn it Sylvie-" Nicolette tries to smack Sylvie in the back of the head, but Sylvie dodges it easily.
"But it's true! He was all 'Nicolette, you did good. If you can keep from slacking off then maybe you'll make Knight after all,' and she's been all smiles ever since!"

>>
>>27772988

>>
>>27773007

>>
>>27773010
That correlation is stupid. They're dividing their attention between being a great swordsman and being good at magic. We will focus all of our training on swordsmanship. We're genius swordsmen, so lets push the envelope even further.
>>
>>27773018
And how do you expect to go beyond human ability without magic?

>>27773007

>>
>>27773033

>>
>>27773020

>>
>>27773007
>Good on you Nicolette. Seems Ser Gregory was pretty impressed with how you took command when we apprehended that "spy".
>>
>>27773044
We've committed shit. Right now, we're barely a few days into even knowing what magic is beyond twiddling fingers and shouting.

We're going to master our discipline first, and then see about strange, esoteric stuff later.
>>
>>27773050
Hey, we could multi-class, so we gain nifty tools to use beside our swording. Or, we could sword even harder, and we gain the strongest tools in the form of our mastery of one area, instead of trying to divide our focus several ways.
>>
>>27773045
It's already been stated that Reinhold can't get better without training against other people, since the only people worth training against also have their own shit to do, we have spare time to learn magic when they aren't around.

And picking up a few helpful spells that enable us to better defend the princess isn't going to make us worse with the sword.
>>
>>27773056
This.
>>
>>27773058

LET'S ASK SYLVIE HOW EASY IT IS FOR A MAGE OF ANY LEVEL TO HOLD DOWN A SWORDSMAN WITH NO MAGIC SKILLS WHATSOEVER
>>
>>27773042
I love it too. I want to do the truest master swordsman, instead of a swordmage.

>>27773050
But this analogy is terrible because they're actually separate disciplines. Swordsmanship is amazingly deep.
>>
>>27773058
I don't see why it has to be one or the other. Its not like learning magic is going to make us worse at swording, and we don't have any readily available sparring partners anyway because they've all got jobs to do.

Its blatantly obvious if you just look at the three biggest shit-kickers we know (Vincent, Gregory, Arnaud) that combining the two is both efficient and a pretty dang good idea.
>>
>writing
>>
>>27773063
What are diminishing returns. Also, swording is limited by laws of physics.
>>
>>27773078
Well, earth magic could easily put up a stone wall between us and the princess, which we would then need to knock down or go around, so, trivially.
>>
>>27773073
We'll train against whoever takes us. Demand training, don't politely ask.

We'll tell her that we need to master our own specialty first. No problem.

They do it their way, but it's not the only way. Clearly, not every master fighter in the world is also a magician. It might just be the particular style of this region, like some cultures favoring spears or something
>>
>>27773096
Almost none of our swording has been representative of actual swordfighting. Don't do this.

>>27773097
That's why you get stronger. Jump over or knock down any stone walls in your presence. Don't be limited by conventional ideas of what people can do.
>>
>>27773096
This isn't realism quest, you know. We can exceed human limitations, and if you can't reconcile with that idea, we won't be able to anything well.
>>
>>27773023
With this
>>27772901
>>
>>27773099
Demanding training from people who are unwilling does jack all, because all they'll be looking for is a way to get rid of us, probably by losing as quickly and safely as possible.
>>
>>27773099

You want to deliberately handicap us for no reason other than "I don't want to multiclass". We're not in a D&D world where that even matters. Your suggestions go against established character motivations and previous consensus and should therefore be ignored entirely.
>>
So you give tg a way to become badass in your world and they choose to totally ignore it.

wtf.

Practice sword and practice magic. That's the best way.
>>
>>27773099
But literally noone who has time to spar wants to spar.
That's not gonna change just because we start demanding it of them.
If we had a reliably available training partner who was good enough to give us a challenge I'd be all for it.
But since we dont, we might as well get some magic going instead of wasting our time doing fuck all.
>>
>>27773099
Look. I don't give a shit if you have a damn swordsmanship fetish. We've already asked a person to teach us magic and she's really gone out of her way to do it. Not only are you being a ridiculous autist but you're also making the character to be really insincere and ungrateful just to get your wa. We are learning magic. Stop being a whiny bitch and just deal with that.
>>
>>27773112
Throwing a fight is dishonorable. There are surely men of honor who wish to test their mettle.

>>27773116
Don't think of it as a handicap. That's loaded word bullcrap. It's specializing and learning new ways to apply your strength. Reinhold is a bad magician and shouldn't be wasting his time being subpar.
>>
>>27773083
Doesn't matter how deep it is, it's gimping us to ignore everything else, nota bene when we've exhibited some amount of talent. It's wasting potential, and might eventually cost us our job and/or our life.
>>
>>27773131
Except it's already stated we're poor at magic and great at swording. It's playing to our strengths to try and keep our focus on swording.
>>
"That's great, Nicolette," you say, giving a thumbs up. "It sounds like Sir Gregory was pretty impressed with the way you took command when we captured that 'spy.'"
"I heard that the only reason he knew was because -someone- told him!" Sylvie teases.
"God damn it Sylvie would you quit it-" Nicolette takes another swing at Sylvie, but misses entirely. "Ugh... let's just go inside already."

Defeated, Nicolette heads into the kitchen. You and Sylvie follow behind, and the three of you take your usual seats at the table.

"See, Reinhold?" Nicolette says, sighing. "This is what I meant by 'the real Sylvie.' You're next, you know."
"Aw, you're just embarassed!" Sylvie giggles. "So, Reinhold. Did you have a good day too?"

I'm not above learning countermagic measures from Sylvie, as that's the most relevant to our position (stop others from using magic so they have to fight us on our own terms). But we're bad magicians otherwise.

Fortunately we don't have to be a good magician to be able to use magic. That's exactly what scrolls are for.

Fair enough, but we run out of scrolls unless we go around covered in them.

carrying them around would be a hassle. unless we get ourselves a convenient necklace like the one Nico has...
>>
>>27773233
Hmm, let's see.

Jee, I wonder what the better option would be.
>>
>>27773253
I don't know why he gave us a swordsman if he wanted us to focus on his magic system, though.
>>
>>27773231
Second.
>>
>>27773253
You're responding to the wrong person there, bud. Also, stop it with the argument, those two aren't going to change their minds.
Ignore the vocal minority and let us continue in peace.
>>
>>27773253
As an addendum to this, I'd like to remind everyone that Arnaud can still school us in a 1v1 no magic swords only final destination deathmatch.
>>
>>27773264
That's you making a false assumption. Just because we can use magic does not make us a dedicated mage, or change the fact that swordsmanship is our primary skill.
>>
>>27773282
No, that was the crux of the argument. People wanted us to focus on our swordsmanship, since we've been working on magic for the past few days instead and seem to have been neglecting it for several threads.
>>
>>27773264
...because it didn't make sense for Reinhold's background to be able to use magic? He grew up a poor little orphan boy in a backwater town, sworded really hard, and became master sword. This is how he got accepted into Royal Guard. Magic is a thing that's really rare for most people to do, so who's gonna teach a brothel bookkeeper how to do it?

Now he's seeing all these other RGs with both weapons training and magical capabilities and at least one of them is a swordsman like him. He's bound to be interested.

But really. We haven't drawn in a while. Doesn't someone owe us another sketch? Or maybe we should go sketch the sunset again.
>>
>>27773264
Considering he gave us a master swordsman right away why wouldn't we? People are treating doing something besides swording as heresy when we were good enough with it out of the gate to afford experimenting with other stuff. Obviously, we can still improve in that area but it's clear we've reached a level of competence that outclasses the vast majority already.
>>
>>27773275
Because he's an ancient old man still alive by magic.

Seriously, how do some of you live with basic pattern recognition?
>>
>>27773264
>it has to be only one or the other
Maybe we should not have learned to read and spent more time with the sword. Maybe we should not have even learn to speak and let the weapon do the talking.

that was sarcasm btw.
>>
>>27773285
But we have no readily available way to improve at swording.
>>
>>27773293
Besides magic.
>>
>>27773288
Good. Then we should learn magic even for the benefit of getting more time to train in swordery.
>>
>>27773293
I gave some ideas on how to get around this, and it's basically
A) Spar with Gregory, get ass kicked and learn
B) Spar with Arnaud, get ass kicked and learn
C) Spar with Nico
D) Start a class for training the guards how to better sword, and then learn from teaching them (watching their balance, grip, technique, etc.)

I really like the idea of D because it's a Reinhold-thing to do. He's definitely humble and willing to share what he knows with others, and as a former army grunt he can relate to these guys.
>>
>>27773307
D isn't so bad, because it'll make our job easier. I mean, when shit goes down, it's gonna be big.
>>
>>27773307
A-C aren't readily available. Those people are busy. D is ridiculously time consuming and will result in no real payoff for a long time. We can learn several spells in the time it would take for that to get anywhere to improve our skills.
>>
"Not bad, a lot of etiquette classes," you reply. "And dancing. Too much dancing. That aside, things are looking up."
"...dancing, you say?" Nicolette flashes a toothy grin at Sylvie. "Who with, if I may ask?"
"...who else?" you sigh. "Princess Marianne."
"Oh man, Sylvie!" Nicolette laughs. "It looks like she really is going to steal Reinhold away from you!"

Glaring at Nicolette, Sylvie stands up and punches her HARD on the top of her head.

"OW! What the hell!?" Nicolette yells, rubbing where Sylvie just hit her.
"You know what you did," Sylvie replies as she sits back down. "So, I take it that you're participating in the Princess's classes?" she asks.
"Yeah, I try to pay attention because it seems like it'd be useful," you reply, shrugging. "The ballroom dancing classes aren't really voluntary on my part, though."
"Yeah, Mrs. Pauline is kind of forceful..." Sylvie laughs. "My sisters love that stuff, but I'm glad that my father doesn't force it on me."

You see Nicolette about to say something (probably rude), but the conversation is cut short by the arrival of Margot and her cart of delicious foodstuffs.

"It's great to see you young people in such high spirits!" Margot says, beaming. "Today's entree is chicken and egg noodles!

In that case, let me break it down for you.

Gerhard's character portrait is a character from Umineko.

This character is directly associated with Beatrice the Golden Witch, by virtue of being her demonic butler.

We're currently living in the kingdom of NobleBrightistan, or so we think, and yet Marianne's mother is MIA. So sad, so tragic.

But how did she die, when she was married to the king of the best motherfucking kingdom ever and surrounded by legendary badasses such as not!Wallachia and not!Valkenhayn, not to mention her husband? Suspicious.

Marianne is blonde. Arc will not confirm whether or not the particular shade of blonde could be described as golden or not, and as such he has positively confirmed to a scientific standard that the answer is "yes".

So in conclusion, Marianne's mother is alive (though she may have indeed died at one point), evil, and is going to show up to ruin our day in some elaborate sadistic poetic murder mystery plot.

I'm Ushiromiya Battler, and this message was brought to you by Hinamizawa Syndrome, your leading brand of spooky zombie alien ghosts since 1983!

Impending horrible fate aside, we might be on to something with Marianne's mum being important in more than just a "generic sad backstory" sense.

Hang on.

Wouldn't this imply that Gerhard is evil too? Yknow, the superninja?

Niet comrade. Too obvious, we'd all see it coming a mile away at the first hint of foreshadowing.

Yes, and he then reported it to the king so that he could expose himself for the traitor that he was.
>>
>That other country is building up its military and sending spies into our country
>These Shadowruns
Guys I think I know where NotBeatrice went
>>
You fags panic over the weirdest things. Even if we do get a notBeatrice in the setting?

I'm perfectly fine with it. In fact, bring it on. I liked her a lot.
>>
>>27774804
Whoa there edgelord, don't cut me.
>>
>>27774867
You don't even know what that term means.
>>
People keep talking about how it's a social quest and slice of life, but I feel like it's more of a setup.
>>
>>27774882
>its a setup
For when Reinhold makes an allience with notBeatrice and go on rampaging around the continent?
I'd be fine with it
>>
>>27774867
Hes not being edgy, hes saying he thinks this could be interesting. And frankly I agree.
>>

I seriously expected the king to get assassinated before we ever met him. The next most likely situation is that Marconetti visit, which he said he wanted to skip to.
>>
jesus, you shadowrunning faggots shit up the place don't you, go back to MGNQ
>>
>>27774969
We can't. Its on hiatus for two weeks.

Also, I for one welcome our new mother in law villain.
>>
>>27774986

GREGORY IS NICOLETTE'S FATHER.

YOU FUCKING IDIOTS, HOW HAVE YOU MISSED THE FORTY HINTS ARC HAS GIVEN YOU.

My friend here is also a member of the royal family," Sylvie says, pointing to Nicolette.

"Nice looking out, Reinhold," Sir Gregory says, and then turns to Nicolette. "You better step up your game, Nicolette. At this rate, Reinhold's going to make Knight before you're anywhere close to it," he says with a smirk.

"Quit acting like all I do is goof off all day, dammit..." Nicolette mutters under her breath. "So why exactly did you decide to come all the way out here?" she asks.
"Vincent heard about the messenger bird from Arnaud and was about to run all the fuck over here, he was that worried about Sylvie," Sir Gregory says with a sigh. "But I'm a lot faster than he is, and a lot less... -destructive-, so I volunteered to fly out here in his place. And I can't say that I wasn't worried myself...

"...heh," Sir Gregory places a hand to his forehead. "As fun as it would be to watch Nicolette try out all manner of fancy dresses, I'm afraid that you'll get to enjoy that without me," he says with a smirk.
"...so you -did- come here mainly to rub it in," Nicolette says, her face bright red.
"No, that was simply a bonus. Well, I suppose I have work to do..." Sir Gregory turns around and heads in the same direction as the guards.

HE'S HER DAD YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS. JESUS CHRIST I LOOKED AND NONE OF YOU MENTIONED IT.
>>
>>27775457
I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS. SOMEONE HAS TO SEE AND MENTION THIS TO THE RUNNERS NEXT TIME HE RUNS OR ELSE IT'S GOING TO GET LOST.
>>
>>27775467
AND VINCENT IS SYLVIE'S, I BET YOU FAGLORDS FORGOT ABOUT THAT TOO.
>>
>>27775457
Pretty sure anyone with half a brain has suspected that since thread forever. Does everything need to be pointed out?
