You lick your lips and wait a moment as you watch your prey. The cold is quickly sapping its energy. In a moment it will collapse and not be able to put up any resistance, but your alpha dashes forward first. You run behind him but he is already several bounds ahead of you. The child screams as your alpha pounces on it.

Your head snaps up as you hear the humans rally. They will be upon you soon, but your alpha doesn't seem to notice as he rips at your prey and kills it, thrashing his head from side to side. You dive in with him to tear apart the child's skins and get to the flesh, but as soon as you get a taste of meat, your alpha snaps at you and growls. He seems intent on taking all of the food for himself and leaving you none.

You snarl and back off for a moment and he returns to the meat, exposing himself to you. As alpha it is his right to eat first, but it's just the two of you.He's very hurt right now, you couldn't have taken him even one moon cycle ago, but now you have a chance.

If projectiles weren't common i'd be more keen to muscle in for some food, because we could outrun humans on foot, but I think the decision seems to be made with or without my support.

The humans are shouting for one another and forcing their horses through the snow and rocks. The light of the full moon reflecting off the fields of snow is enough for you to see where they are coming from. They are pushing themselves too hard to reach the whelp.

You snarl at your alpha again and trot off to the side, up a small hill so you can overlook the approaching humans. Six of them are working through the snow, holding fire in their hands. The one in front is most frantic, shouting again and again, but has yet to see your alpha. In the back, a horse cries out and falls over, it's leg broken on a hidden root. The human that was atop it is shouting in pain now, trying to push the thrashing beast off his own leg.

The human group splits. The three in front continue forward, and will see your alpha in a moment, while the two in back are moving to help their pack member. There is no way for them to save the horse, they will have to leave it there. You can smell the fear in the horse as it rolls and struggles to stand but can't.

Horse blood fills the air as the humans slit the animal's throat and leave it to die. You are about to bolt to the horse as the crying human shouts something, and all of the humans begin looking throughout the woods.

As the humans spread out with their torches you turn and run. The only path away from them without being seen is down the opposite side of the small hill, directly to the frozen river. The smell of horse blood still fills your thoughts as your empty stomach growls. But you know there are no other predators in your territory. The bears to the north, where the river tumbles down a few rocks, are still hibernating. The adjacent packs have all fled from the humans. And the vultures don't fly at night, usually.

The humans are still running through the woods behind you with their fire, looking for you, one of them seems to be getting close, so you trot out onto the ice to cross to the other side. It's not your packs, not your territory, but there might be prey, or at least somewhere to hide so you can return to the horse.

The ice is thin, a good sign that spring is returning. Even your meager weight is enough to shift and crack it, but not enough to break it. A shadow passes between you and the moon.

Vultures are in the sky, circling above the mountain. Above where the humans are. You can smell more fire upriver.

TreeThumb wolf the first. I like.

You cross the ice, leaving distinct tracks in the thin snow, but the humans won't be able to cross. An old pine tree hangs over the river partially. The snow build up on it's branches creating a small shelter for you to crawl in to. The scent of pine sap is mixed with urine. The neighboring pack must have been here recently and marked it. But they aren't here now. Out of the cold wind, you collapse against the trunk of the tree, your hunger sapping your strength greatly. A small break in the branches lets you look out across the river to where the humans are, without having to move.

Humans, especially in large numbers, are always noisy. But tonight seems worse. Between the full moon and all the fires, the entire valley is lit up almost as if it were day. And the humans seem to be shouting and blaring on their horns, moving and marching and shouting. You can see a small group of humans down near the rivers edge running around with fire, and the humans on the hill are responding.

The lead human has emerged from the trees, searching for your tracks. How he managed to do so when you did not break through the snow until the river, you are uncertain. You watch him come all the way up to the edge of the river and stop, when another of the humans runs up to his side to make their grunting noises at one another.

The human growls and spits on the ice before turning and running back to the hill.

The alphas as we think of are based on observations of wolves in captivity where packs tend to be thrown together and strangers to each other. So you push out of the branches and descend back to the river. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of men on the hillside now. Shouting and screaming, blood and fire. Carnage is opening upriver of you, but it is keeping the humans distracted.

You cross the ice and run back to the woods. The path is quick and hurried on as you chase the scent of horse blood. The corpse is still there, as the humans left it. The steam from the blood has already dissipated, but the internal body is still warm. You rip open the gut of the horse, tearing through its muscles and gulping down what you can. Blood and lymph spills out around you and on your face as you dig in to find the liver before ripping into its haunches.

Your gut bloats and swells as you force meat and blood into it to sate your hunger, and at last you can eat no more. You can already feel your strength returning as you step back from the horse and sit down to rest.

Luckily, corpses and logs begin to pile up and catch the ice, letting you swim through, searching for a break in the ice before the flow drowns you.

At last, the river widens, and you catch a bar of gravel to stand on, against the flow. With a moment to catch your breath and shake the water from your fur, you look at the two paths before you. You could attempt to return where you came, or continue further down the river, but there is no guarantee, you may even be forced underwater before continuing out. At least there is no way for the humans to follow you here.

The rules are still in flux a bit

Essentially, d20+Fight resolves aggressive actions, d20+Flight resolves defensive actions. Losing when someone rolls Fight against you will make you lose at least 1 health, and at most 1 if you were rolling Flight, and you generate 1 hunger (cap of 5) when you rest and recover 1 health.

Then there are traits, which I don't have a good list of them at a moment, but are things like "he is the best with a blade" "He can't ever be unhorsed" "He could never die" and so on, strong beliefs people hold about what's possible. Gods and spirits are just collections of traits given form.

I think the consensus is against you. Don't worry, humans cause plenty of refuse and such. We just need to be careful not to bite off more than we can chew and invade a settlement and we should be fine.

There's also the advantage of where we came from not having any wolf packs in it (for a while). Wolf packs kill lone wolves that wander into their territory.
