Once upon a time, /tg/ discussed a concept so ridiculous as to be insanely fun, if only it could be given the crunch it so desperately needed.

I am of course speaking about Time Wizards.

For the uninitiated, Time Wizards is a rules-light tabletop RPG. It uses dice pools (of a sort?) and really exists outside of description. You're better off just reading it before trying to grasp what, if anything, it is.

To that effect, I have searched low and high for a compiled rulebook for the purposes of handing out to players. Forgive the pun, but no dice. All that existed was a pastebin that a friendly anon had made with some very demonstrative examples.

To that end: I have compiled a rulebook, using the structure of that original anon's examples. I added some things that my players suggested in our first playthrough. I present it to you now, as-is, no guarantees. Do with it what you will.

Enjoy, guys!

Getting drunk should probably be mandatory for playing Time Wizards. Like, it should say in the rules that to play this game, you'll need some dice, and some booze of your choice.

HOUSE RULE: XP is awarded in the form of more alcohol.

I don't know, probably.
Maybe we could operate the slap phases with rolls, and we could modify the rules to work with an online game.

It might work, if I say so myself.

Okay, after reading the .pdf, I would have to say that I like the change cards, thought that the flowchart was helpful, the "example" text was humorous, and I think that the time moment concept is a good idea, even if it the rolling mechanics and the finer points of the slap phase are beyond me at this exact moment. That will probably be alleviated by subsequent read-throughs. I plan on telling my group about this, our DM has wanted this for months now. would play/10.
>>
>>27744747
It could use some clarification on the steps leading up to the slap phase. If I'm reading the rules text right, the steps are:

Slap the table and shout "I WANT TO DECLARE A TIME MOMENT!"
Dice pools are refreshed and the TM sets the difficulty.
Players write down how they intend to affect the situation.
??? (I assume the TM reads aloud what the players wrote at this point, but it isn't mentioned)
Slap Phase

Also, to what extent are players obliged to stick to what they wrote before the slap phase when they describe their action? Does the TM also select and throw dice in the slap phase? Maybe also include an example of resolving a Moment where some players roll above the TM and some roll below.

Hey guys, it's the OP. If you want to throw some stuff up on the wiki, I can make a new edition in a few weeks with more concrete rules.

I'm not gonna trip up, so you'll have to trust me. I'll keep tabs on the wiki and keep it updated if possible. Mostly at this point I'd just like for people to play it and give feedback on how stupid it is. (Maximum stupid is what we're going for)
I don't wanna
>>
>>27750865
Idea for a new rule: the "time of day" part of a wizard's name, when reached, will give them some sort of special power, or amplify their power, or let them use them all at once in a stunning coup de grace or something, you'll figure it out.

Another idea: some form of temporal fabric. IE, if a wizard fucks up time so damn bad or does something irreparably stupid, it creates a tear in the temporal fabric. Once it's teared enough, game over thanks for playing.
>>
>>27750865

Dunno where the "I don't wanna" came from, but I would like to say that I threw up a note on the discussion page. Feel free to add whatever you'd like, I'll be more active there (and more reachable)!
>>
>>27750982
If the name of the wizard and the current day+time are the same, the wizard rolls against himself. On failure, something comes out of the wizard's body based on one of his attributes (TM's choice).
>>
>>27750982
I like the idea, and I think it gives the players more of a reason to pick a specific time to declare as their awakening.

>>27751051
I like the concept, but "rolling against yourself" is kinda hard in a system that doesn't really use dice in a traditional manner. I think there is a way to incorporate something similar, though: what if we just used a random deck of cards to describe what happens at the moment? Could even have "TM decides what happens, but..." as a card. Something to consider.

Basically, the slap phase happens as described, as an entity unto itself. Once the slap phase is done and the "roll order" has been determined, the TM lets each player describe what they wanted to have happen in descending roll order. It's described a bit more in the section called "OUTCOMES" in the rules.
>>

I'm trying to figure out dice selection strategy. So, from what I understand, this game is mechanically balanced around the fact that slapping a d4 (or having someone slap on top of your hand after you've slapped a d4) hurts like fuck? So players who want to hinder an action choose d4s because they will be more likely to be unslapped (and thus revert back to them and the TM), and you can try to influence the dice rolls by trying to angle your dice towards or away from certain players and/or when you choose to call out "SLAP!"?

The "difficulty" settings seem a bit weird. Specifically, it seems like the only thing that becomes more difficult to succeed at is time dilation. Additionally I think the trivial (1 die) tasks are going to be more difficult to succeed at than easy (2 die) tasks. Any die that goes unslapped will default to the TM, and assuming the TM also chooses a die to throw, that is only one die per player to distribute around the table, which means that if any player gets more than one die, at least one other player is guaranteed to not have any dice to roll for that particular Moment. Also, the TM winding up with any d12s is much harder to overcome on a 1 die challenge than a 2+ die challenge.
>>
In Time Moments, the TM sets a difficulty rating, right? I assume it's like a check in DnD, but I think it could use a bit more clarification.

Day made.

Chur OP
>>
>>27751847
Don't forget to post results.
>>
>>27751886

I think the entire point of the slap phase is that it's confusing. People are shouting, things are being thrown around, errant hands are slapping for dice, etc. The case of 1 die is pretty strange, but if we take into consideration that it's all about "chaos," then the element of strategy gets thrown out.

Basically, tl;dr: the slap phase is "trick your friends into slapping d4's." The numbering and numerical strategy of the dice has very little meaning.

>>27751931
The TM picks a difficulty rating, which determines how many dice get tossed by the players. Once every player has tossed his or her dice and they've been slapped, everybody rolls their pools and tries to beat the TM's roll. Everything "happens," but those who roll above get "YES" cards and those that roll below get "NOPE" cards.
>>
>>27751886
>>27751931

Perhaps the rulebook should be worded "Chaos rating" instead of "Difficulty," to more accurately represent the source of the number itself.
>>

The short version: DM Kroft came on /tg/ and told a ridiculous story that sounded awesome and fun, but he couldn't remember all (any) of the rules. Fast forward to now, /tg/ gets shit done, and has made a playable version of a game that was literally described with "it was fun, and I played it."
>>
>>27752030

OP here. Since the thread seems to be dying down and I need to get some sleep, I'd like to put in one last request for people to post playtest info, ideas, what have you on the 1d4chan wiki.
