You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

You started the day out helping melanie carry some books to the court mage Niklaus's study, and then you narrowly avoided "helping out" with one of his experiments.

With that little interlude done with, you headed down to the dining hall where you met up with the Princess.

>Guard Rank: FERRET
>Congratulations, you are now a lazy Ferret!
>Ferrets are cute and rather smart, but they kind of smell...
>The Princess now likes you a tiny little bit!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

"About what you said the other day..." you begin, "...I hope you understand that I don't dislike being around you."
"Wha-" Completely taken off-guard by your comment, the Princess takes a few seconds to gather her composure.

"Heh..." the Princess smiles wistfully. "Sylvie seems to be afraid of me now, and Nicolette avoids me entirely," she sighs. "yet for some reason, -you- are the only person here aside from Father and Melanie who actually claims to enjoy my company?"
"Uh, if I offended you or anything..." you blurt out, trying to avoid any kind of misunderstanding.
"No, don't worry yourself," she waves her hand dismissively. "The company of a ferret who actually enjoys being around me is preferable to that of humans who don't."

Before you can ask her what she meant by "ferret," Margot and several butlers approach the table with today's breakfast.

"Now, now, Princess... it's a waste for you to be frowning like that so early in the morning!" Margot chirps. "Now cheer up, the chef made waffles!"

With that, the butlers place your plates in front of you, and they all leave the room so that you can eat in peace.

The Princess simply cuts you a quick glance, sighs, and returns her attention to her food. As you try and ignore your failed attempt at a joke, you remember something from earlier.

"Um, Princess?" you ask.
"What is it?" Marianne replies as she cuts her waffles.
"Am I supposed to be dressing up for that ball in Marconetti?"
"...isn't it obvious?" she sighs. "Your uniform is far from what is considered appropriate attire, after all."
"Yeah, I figured as much..."
"As for what exactly you will be wearing, I'm sure you can ask Arnaud about that when you have the time. He's always been rather good with things like that."

Princess Marianne then starts eating her waffles, which you take as a sign that she does't feel like talking to you anymore. With that out of the way, you quickly get to filling your stomach.

After the Princess finishes eating, she get up from her seat and motions for you to come along. You follow her through the hallway wordlessly, and the atmosphere is a lot more unpleasant than what you've gotten accustomed to.

Fortunately, that's broken up as you turn a corner and see Sir Gregory.

"Good morning, Sir Gregory," you say with a salute. "How's our guest doing?"
"Ah, the kid," Sir Gregory sighs. "Turns out that he's legit. Turns out that Arnaud knows his family, too."
"...really?"
"Yeah, he's a noble from Marconetti. Apparently, old Celestino picked him out specially so that he'd be released quickly if he got caught," Sir Vincent replies, rolling his eyes. "Seriously, every fucking thing that man does is planned..."

"That's certainly an accurate statement," the Princess chimes in.
"Really..." Sir Vincent sighs again. "...oh yeah. Good morning, Marianne."
"It's nice that you fi-" she stops mid-sentence, focusing on the area behind Sir Gregory.
"...shit, I thought I was going to avoid this..."

Sir Gregory turns around to face Arnaud and the spy from yesterday, who managed to approach without a sound. Arnaud looks the same as always, but the spy... he seems to be exceptionally angry, and is now sporting a shiny new black eye.

"Ah, I wasn't expecting to meet you all here in the hallway," Arnaud says with a bow. "I was just escorting young master Henri out of the castle, you see..."

"Good morning, Arnaud," the Princess says.
"I suppose I should introduce you all to this young gentleman here, his name is Henri Paschen," Arnaud says.

"Uh, I'm glad that we turned out to be on the same side," you say to him.
"...I'm pretty sure that's what I fucking told you in the first place, but whatever," Henri replies. "If you'd have just listened to me, I would've been able to get off without THIS," he says as he points to his black eye.

"...were you the one who..." the Princess turns to you with a look of surprise.
"No, I'm pretty sure that that wasn't me," you reply. "I was the one who caught him, but I didn't do any punching yesterday."
"Naw, he just threatened to cut my fucking arms off," Henri says. "It was that huge guy who punched me in the goddamned face, not the swordboy. Said that it was payback for putting his daughter in danger or something."

"And you too, Reinhold. I noticed that you've been listening on to my little lectures," Sir Gregory says, turning to you.
"Uh, was I not supposed to?" you ask.
"Hm. No, it's fine. Just know that I expect you to actually pay attention fron here on out."
"Um, sure."

Sir Gregory then turns around and heads off to take care of whatever errand he needed to do. With a sigh, the Princess motions for you to follow her and the two of you head to the empty classroom that Sir Gregory holds his class in.

"I do hope he doesn't take too long," the Princess says as she enters the room and sits down in the closest chair.

My concern was with wording rather than the general tact. Were it phrased as something such as, "Oh, I don't think it would do knighting a bodyguard who is but a ferret in the eyes of their princess. No, that must wait until I have eared at least the rank of dog."

"How so?"
"Back when Nicolette first joined the Royal Guard, it seemed like she only did so in order to spite her father. And then she managed to get promoted to Captain, and now it seems that she's actually working to become a Knight... I'm actually happy for her."

Happy for her? That was unexpected...

"Huh, and here I thought that you didn't like each other," you say, shrugging.
"Hm? I don't know if she's angry at me for something, but I have nothing against her at all," the Princess replies. "...though if she really was going to become a knight, I would have expected her to try in Marconetti, not here..." she says under her breath.

After a few minutes, Sir Gregory storms into the room.

"Alright, that bullshit is dealt with..." he lets out a long sigh. "And now for this..."

After a bit of mumbling, Sir Gregory claps his hands together.

"Okay. So, Marianne, you know about yesterday's idiocy?" he asks.
"What, that whole business with that person who we ran into in the hallway?" the Princess replies. "The only thing I know of it was that a message arrived while Father and I were having lunch with Sir Vincent, and then Father had to physically keep him from rushing out there..."
"Yeah, that," Sir Gregory says with a sigh. "So anyways, that kid was sent here by that old jackass Celestino..."

Sir Gregory then goes on a long rant about how Celestino, the current king of Marconeti, is worried about the kingdom of Ancellotta sending sleeper agents into Granache to weaken it. And since Granache is Marconetti's strongest ally, Ancellotta would be in a favorable position to start a war with them.

While Sir Gregory clearly hates Ancellotta, he is still a bit unsure about the prospect of them starting a war, since Marconetti's army is still far stronger even with Ancellotta's current militarization.

Another theory as to the reason for the current military buildup is that Krassato, a nation bordering Ancellotta, has apparently married into draconic royalty, and they too are unhappy with them. So Ancellotta is currently surrounded by enemies on all sides, and is panicking.

"Alright, you two got all of that? And try not to piss off anyone from Krassato, since you're likely to see some nobility from there at Emilio's party," Sir Gregory says to you. "God, I hope that kid's less of a pussy now..." he mumbles to himself.

>>
>>27736132

>>27736097
We've played him as getting along with everybody, not making a pass at people he's known for a few days, and generally being a bro to the Sylvie and Nicolette. And then some guys went all "durr repressed because bordello".

We're not in his head. Nothing in his behavior indicates that he's somehow more repressed than the average teenager. A bit oblivious to a girl's cues, but then again, he's a seventeen -fucking-years old who spend most of his teenage years with the army. Nothing unusual.

Not to say he's incapable, since he's a protagonist in a not-that-dark-or-sinister fantasty setting, but I don't think he's really one of the "all the sex all the time," kind of guys.

Intimacy and genuine romance, maybe, but even that I see as being one hell of a character arc for. I really don't expect him to be any kinds of physical in a relationship, let alone fuckin' a bitch.

It depends. Lot of it actually comes from psychiatrists and shit. Since where Reinhold grew up, that was a normal thing, he wouldn't have sexual problems if that was the case. His repression wasn't because he was molested or sold or anything.
>>
>>27736293
He wasn't "likely molested repeatedly" just for being in a bordello., that at least is true. And we don't know what that Spinelle gal did. For all we know she got a little too clingy with him when he was way too young. And the setting so far has been pretty lighthearted.

Anyway, let's ask how 'sleeper' an agent can be, to put our paranoia in perspective. For instance magical compulsions triggered by a command word? Could a sleeper be unaware of being one?
>>
"Uh... 'draconic royalty?'" you ask.
"Yeah, the crown prince of Krassato just married some dragon king from the west's daughter. So now they have a link with those guys, and there's a couple of 900-year dragons in that family... it'd take like every powerful magicuser in Granache working together to even have a chance fighting -one- of them, so yeah. Krassato's future is set," Sir Gregory replies.
"...wow," you reply, unable to even imagine such a thing.
"Krassato and Marconetti are just trading partners, but Celestino's sure to invite nobles from all over the place to show off for his kid's party. So both of you ought to watch yourselves."

"You act as if I don't know how to behave myself," the Princess says, glaring at Sir Gregory.
"I'm just saying that they might not be the most receptive to your charming personality," he replies.
"Um," you chime in, trying to defuse a potential argument, "is there anything specific that I'd need to make sure not to do?"
"Don't be an ass," Sir Gregory begins, "don't be rude, don't brag about how awesome you are, don't challenge them to armwrestling contests, don't talk about eating Lindwurm meat..."
"I'll keep that in mind," you say.
"...well, you won't be able to tell a dragon in human form apart from anyone else, anyways. So just be wary around anyone who says they're from over there and you ought to be fine."

"Um, how likely do you think it'll be that I'll have to take up a more active role in guarding the Princess while we're in Marconetti?" you ask.
"I dunno, it's not like I can tell the future," Sir Gregory replies, shrugging. "Just keep your eyes open while we're there. It's not that you'll be on duty the entire time, though."
"...I won't?"
"Judging from how things always go, there'll be some bullshit meeting that Thierri gets pulled into and Marianne will want to tag along to learn the ropes of dealing with that crap and I'll be dragged in as well because I'm knee-deep in all this garbage so Marianne will be safer than usual," Sir Gregory lets out a long sigh.

What -exactly- are your intentions towards Sylvie?
>>
>>27736815
>[2/2]

Sir Gregory pulls a scroll out of his pocket and tosses it to you.

"Sylvie told me that you learned how to use scrolls, so here you go," he says.
"Thanks?" you reply, unsure of what's going on.
"That's a scroll for Sanctuary," Sir Gregory explains. "One target, line-of-sight. When you cast it on someone, it'll form a safe area around them, around the size of a small house at the absolute minimum. Nothing with the intent to harm the target is able to enter, and all attacks and shit like that will be deflected."
"W... wow," you look at the scroll in your hands, and back at Sir Gregory. "Um, thanks."
"Oh, but before I forget- the field is stationary, and the effect ends when the target leaves it. So it's only useful to hold down the fort, not for running away. Make sure you remember that," Sir Gregory says to you as he leaves the toom.

"That's -the- defensive spell, if you didn't already know," the Princess says to you as she gets up from her seat. "And not even Niklaus can cast it without a scroll."
"Mantra?" you ask, remembering what Sylvie mentioned to you the other day.
"Yes."

You then get up and follow the Princess as she heads for the courtyard. after your usual check, you hold the door open for her and follow her to the table.

>>
>>27737045

>>27736959
>"Mantra?" you ask, remembering what Sylvie mentioned to you the other day.
>"Yes."
Niklaus can't cast it without a scroll because he doesn't have the proper mindset, not because he's not skilled enough.

Still probably a reasonable assumption that they're highly valuable, though.
>>
>>27737066
Is it actually an unbreakable wall or is it that the people who can break through it are just as rare?
>>
>>27737035
That's not what I had in mind. Depending on what church values are, we might be unwittingly already following it closely enough to be capable of casting a mantra of theirs. Of course we are not going to enter a monastery and forfeit our present career.
>>
>>27737087
If by the queerest twist of fate, we're close enough to the required mindset to understand spells specially crafted by the church for the church, I still don't know why we'd want to be a churchman, exactly.

"...Princess?" you ask as you take a seat.
"What is it?" Princess Marianne turns to you.
"Did something happen between you two?"
"Er, who exactly are you referring to?"
"You and Sir Gregory, I see that you don't really get along all that well."
"Ah." the Princess lets out a long sigh. "Nothing in particular happened between us, it's just a clash in personalities. I recognize that he's not a terrible person or anything, but... when I'm around him for too long, I find myself wishing to strangle him," she explains. "And I am sure that the feeling is mutual."

"Don't worry about it," the Princess replies. "And I apologize for expecting you to do so much as it is."
"Haha, now it's my turn to ask you not to worry!" Arnaud replies with a chuckle. "Things like bringing you your afternoon tea are the highlights of my day, you see. So never think that you're doing me a disservice."
"Um... I'll keep that in mind," the Princess replies, completely taken aback.

Arnaud then pours tea for the two of you and leaves the courtyard, leaving you alone with your thoughts.

>>27737529
This was more or less my first thought, but it's probably not a good idea to imply that there was an assassin bent on taking out a royal diplomat from an allied nation. Reflects poorly on the hosts, after all, and we wouldn't want that.

>>
>>27737674
>"About what you said the other day..." you begin, "...I hope you understand that I don't dislike being around you."
>>
>>27737690
"Don't dislike," and "I like you," are two things that are semantically equivalent but actually mean different things.

it's the difference between "Not bad," and "good." We use them, idiomatically, as synonyms, but when you peel back the thin veneer of the really loose, slang-like conversational tone we use English in (at least, here in the US) they're actually two radically different things.
>>
>>27737709
"You're not as awful as you think" and "I don't dislike you" are also not synonymous. "I don't dislike you" is closer to "you're alright" than anything else.
>>
>>27737727
The double negative doesn't entirely negate it, though. The antonym of "dislike," is, clearly, "like," but when you pair it with another negative to form "don't dislike," the meaning moves to a more "You are exceedingly mediocre/average/I literally have NO feelings about this."

It's not a 1:1 translation. I will agree that "not as awful," and "don't dislike you," are, however, not equivalent.
>>
>>27737744
No, "don't dislike" just means "don't dislike." It could refer either to ambivalence or favor toward the subject.
>>
>>27737751
Which is, in a long roundabout way, kind of the point I was digging at. It's ambiguous - could be indifference, ambivalence, or favor. I'm suggesting we simply tell the Princess that, despite what she may think, we actually do like/empathize with her.
>>
"It's not wrong. Everyone has to put up with people they'd rather not because it's their duty," you say. "Doesn't matter if it's a Princess or a servant, we all need to keep on doing our best anyways."
"Yes, I know..." the Princess sighs.
"Just try and make the most of your time with the people whose company you actually enjoy."
"That doesn't mean much when the people whose company you enjoy don't enjoy being around you," she says, looking up at the sky. "...and 'because it's their duty'..."
"Er, I wasn't thinking about you when I said that. I don't dislike you. At all," you say for added emphasis. "I was thinking more of people like Monique."

The Princess turns to you and blinks a few times.

".........oh," she says with a slight smile. "Yes, he is quite awful. And his type is common among nobility, which is one of the reasons I'm not looking forward to going to Marconetti."
"Yeah, Nicolette mentioned that," you reply, sighing. "And it's not like we can punch them all..."
"No, no you can't," the Princess replies with a slight smile. "As satisfying as it would be to watch."

I don't know what those words mean.

How about this? If your stuck in a conversation thats too awful to bear just tug on whatever fancy earrings your wearing and i will come and intervene.
With a convenient excuse... not punches.
>>
>>27737777
It is a good idea to have a bail out code word. We cant use it too many times, but it would be used once or twice in exceptionally bad situation(s).
>this is enough, time to finish off that tea

[x] "Maybe I can teach you how to punch sometime. You're more likely to get away with it than I am."

Despite acknowledging that we SAID we don't dislike her company, she keeps letting slip little things that make it obvious that she doesn't quite believe us.

>>27731279
>"yet for some reason, -you- are the only person here aside from Father and Melanie who actually claims to enjoy my company?"

>>27736815
>"So you'll be free of-AHEM." the Princess coughs, "Er, so you'll be able to do as you please for at least part of the time."

Also somewhat relevant is
>>27737230
>I recognize that he's not a terrible person or anything, but... when I'm around him for too long, I find myself wishing to strangle him," she explains. "And I am sure that the feeling is mutual."

She obviously understands that she's a somewhat difficult individual, but rather than accepting that it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to alienate everyone, she's also incredibly fatalistic about it.

Going to second suggesting this again. Just let her know that if she's starting to reach that point where she's having a hard time resisting the urge to punch smug noble faces that we can give her an escape route.

After all, there's no way the average noble is going to suspect that she's colluding with a run-of-the-mill bodyguard in order to escape from their diplo-clutches.
>>
>>27737857
She's a princess: she must have a frying pan somewhere in her dress.

I say we teach her the art of pan-fu.
>>
>>27737869
She wouldn't be nearly as adorable if she wasn't so cynical about herself.

this isn't exactly a valuable post, but whatever.
>>
>>27737857
Pleb. It would still be a scandal.

>>27737777
>Reassure her again

She has a slight smile now. Let's get a laugh out of her before we're through.
>>
>>27737777
"While I may not be allowed to hurt all of them I should be able to come up with some excuses to get you out of terrible conversations.

Or if they offend you too much I might be allowed to challenge them to a duel, that'd be fun."

"... Well, if there IS a certain someone who really deserves it... Let me know, yeah?"

inb4 he challenges a dragon to a duel.
>>
>>27737869
The princess acts the way she does for a lot of reasons.
But most recently id say having her former bodyguard run around behind her back venemously badmouthing her hasnt helped her self esteem.
Also from her perspective it looks like her friends are pulling away from her.
If we want her to feel better we should encourage nico and silv to spend tine with her. Or at least ask why they're avoiding her.

>I might be allowed to challenge them to a duel, that'd be fun
No, it'd be doing exactly what Greagory told us to not do.

inb4 he doesn't win, but put up enough of a show and skill that everybody's impressed nonetheless.

Pretty sure that your message finally went through, you return your attention to your tea. After the Princess finishes off the contents of the teapot, the two of you get up and head for her next destination.

...and of course, it's the destination that you were dreading the most- the accursed BALLROOM DANCING. As if sensing your arrival, Pauline slides out of the door just as you approach and pulls you in by both hands.

"Ah, Mr. Reinhold! Princess Marianne!" Pauline squeals in a manner that no old lady ever should. "You just can't stay away, can you?"
"Er, not with you holding on to my hands like this..." you reply, smiling nervously.

You glance back at the Princess, and she has a wicked grin on her face. Even if your little conversation wasn't able to cheer her up, being able to watch you suffer like this certainly has...

>surrender yourself to be ground by the wheels of fate.

Might as well learn to dance.
>>
>>27737929
Try and learn as much as we are able to.
>>
>>27737953
Might even be a useful skill with a ball coming up.
>>
Calling it a night here, guys.

Thanks for playing, next thread will probably be tomorrow night.
>>
Let's learn as best we can. We have a ball coming up, so deal with it. Soon we'll be dancing with Sylvie, who will be cute as fuck, and Nicolette, who will be suffering a thousand times as much as we.
>>
>>27737953

Plus, if we're going against a dragon, we might as well go out in style before we get fried.

~you should see me dance the polka, you should see me cover the ground...~

Thanks for the run boss.

>"Heh..." the Princess smiles wistfully. "Sylvie seems to be afraid of me now, and Nicolette avoids me entirely," she sighs. "yet for some reason, -you- are the only person here aside from Father and Melanie who actually claims to enjoy my company?"

Idon't know why it took me this long about this but could we doing something "mend" the Princess's relationship with Sylvie and Nicolette? If we do that she'd I'd think become happy and a more tolerable person among others. Like we could see if Sylvie could come to the afternoon tea sessions, Nicolette could happen to be the guard on duty.

>Just catching up

I love going through the archives.

Not a bad idea, she's clearly bothered by the fact that she's become distant with her friends.

We just need to make sure we aren't too obvious about it. Or maybe we should be as obvious as possible so they can just think "oh that Reinhold and his wacky hijinks", fuck if I know, I'm not good at this shit.
>>
>>27740050
There should be a balance between the two.
