You are Howard Phillips, the son of the only gravedigger in the shoddy town of Woodglenn, and a gravedigger yourself. While digging a grave for Old Man Hendrickson, the local crotchety old man who'd recently died, you found a peculiar mask buried six feet underground. You decided not to tell your father or anyone else about it, but while you were out in the woods gathering flowers for a funeral, a strange man approached you and insisted the mask belonged to him. You refused, seeing as how you spent a whole day digging it up, but the mask is a bit.. strange. You've had a nasty dream about it, and it seems to whisper into the back of your head occasionally. You were attacked by three poes, but you effortlessly defeated them, killing two and transforming the third into a fairy. He is now your minion, and his name is Nail. He's not happy about his lot in un-life, but as you're the only one who can (potentially) turn him back, he's willing to serve you. You also found out the entity that resides in your mask is named Majora.

You returned back to town, only to find Old Man Hendrickson's body was MIA. You searched your old family mausoleum, and found he had become a re-dead, a horrible living corpse with a paralyzing screech. You dispatched it with the powers of Majora, rescuing your father in the process, and managed to stay in control of the mask, but the mayor witnessed the entire thing and is now convinced you are a horrible monster. You managed to intimidate him into silence, but you get the feeling he's not going to let this lie.. After burying the corpse and tending to your unconscious father, you went to visit Marcy, a girl who's family owns the local general store. You brought her a rose, and in return, she gave you a wooden flute she had made previously.

You blink, staring down at the large town floating beneath you. No, not a town. City is more appropriate. You watch people go about their daily lives, working their jobs, laughing, crying. Disgusting. You gather your fell magic, power pouring forth from you in visible waves. You begin flinging hexes into the town at random, hovering high above.

A young man hurrying to meet his beloved hunches over in agony as your magic overtakes him, and he begins shrinking.. An old woman is suddenly mugged violently by an assailant as a guard dozes nearby, overcome by unnatural sleep. Two men who’ve been friends since they were children begin a fist fight with each other over some petty argument, spurred on by your magic. The scene is the same all over the city; your magic causes widespread mayhem. It doesn’t accomplish much. Nobody is hurt badly. But resentment builds in the hearts of those you’ve touched. It empowers you.

Suddenly, a brilliant light flashes from the northern part of the town, a serene park. A figure made of light rises up, flying directly to your location. She raises her hand, and magic begins building, but you are prepared. You constrict her in your tentacles, halting whatever she was trying to do, and effortlessly rip her in half. But it’s not enough. You gather your enormous will and hex her, shattering her into tiny little pieces. You let them slip through your tentacles like torn up shreds of paper, and they fall throughout the town like tiny fireflies. You cackle madly. Nothing can stop you-

The scene has changed. Now you watch a brutal battle from a bird’s eye view. Warriors in ancient looking armor with large spears and massive greatswords combat hooded figures wielding slender blades, usually one in each hand. Among the hooded figures, there are some in billowing brown robes. They leap from soldier to soldier, slicing them apart with extreme grace. When one is overpowered and mortally wounded, they seem to detonate, slaying all those caught in the blast, friend and foe alike. All the while, the king of the soldiers cleaves his enemies with frightening strength, and he lets loose a battle cry. “FOR THE KINGDOM OF IKANA, AND THE FALL OF THE-“

Again, the scene changes. This time, you stand on a pillar. Bubbles float serenely around you, and waterfalls of green liquid fall from the heavens. There are designs engraved on the pillar, but they mean nothing to you. Before you is a massive brown pillar, the color of fresh soil- Wait.. No. That’s not a pillar. It’s a colossal leg. You look up, and before you stands a Giant. It lowers it’s great head to gaze upon you, and you feel as if it’s looking through your soul. It begins to speak very slowly, it’s gargantuan voice resounding with both LAW and pity, echoing throughout the strange landscape you find yourself in. “YOU…. MUST BE STOPPED. IT IS OUR DUTY… TO STOP YOU. WE... ARE….” It trails off. Suddenly, four extraordinarily hands begin descending on you. They’re going to squash you! You leap off the platform, flying away as fast as you can, but their hands are simply too big. As their fingers surround you, darkness closes in.

>>27710797
You wake up in a cold sweat, gasping for breath. That was horrible. You almost got.. huh? You aren’t sure. You can barely remember the details of your dream at all, but you’re certain.. Oh well. You stretch, yawning loudly, and put down the mask in your hands. Somehow, you must’ve fallen asleep with it, because you don’t remember taking it out from under your bed; you probably just forgot to put it away. Better be more careful.. You don’t want your father seeing it. You hear him snoring loudly on the other side of the room; it’ll probably be a little bit before he wakes up. You feel like you really should try to remember your dream, as you know that the last one you had was important, and strain to recall the hazy memories..

The entire thing comes rushing back to you; you have no idea what to make of it. The only time you've ever seen Clock Town, which was surely the city in your dream, was when you were quite young and your father took you on a trip with him to get supplies not available in Woodglenn. The other places.. You have no clue.

You shudder. What a bizarre dream.. What do you do?

You decide you'd better check on your dad. You aren't sure how the events of the previous day have been to his health. You walk over to his bed on the opposite side of the small cabin, and nudge him. He opens his eyes for a moment, groggy with sleep, assures you that he's fine and insists you just let him rest. He rolls back over and immediately starts snoring again. Well then. Guess he's fine. You get dressed, donning your summer work tunic, designed for hard work in the heat. You pull on your boots and head outside. Nail floats around your head, following you out, and squeaks at you.

"Dark one. I see you've awoken from your fell slumber. What mayhem shall we cause today?"

You ignore him, though he raises a good point. What ARE you going to do today? The mayor should probably be dealt with sooner rather than later, and you're burning to find out more about the mask, and if possible, the spirit inside of it named Majora. You're certain nobody in Woodglenn would know, though.. You'd likely have to go to Clock Town. What do you do?

[]Go see the mayor, and deal with him, one way or another.(How? Negotiate or use the mask?)
[]Head into the woods; search for the creepy guy. He knew your mask, at least; maybe he has other answers.

>[x]Go see the mayor, and deal with him, one way or another.

You decide to go confront the mayor and find out just how deeply in trouble you are. You easily find his house, since it's the largest, most expensive one in the entire town, and knock on the front door. His manservant quickly opens it.

"Good day, sir. May I ask why you are calling?" He speaks in a dry, baritone voice devoid of emotion. "Yes, uh, I'm here to see the mayor. Tell him I'm the gravedigger boy, or something. Howard. Howard Phillips. He's expecting me, I think." You aren't really sure how to go about this, but nod to yourself. Seems professional enough.

The manservant raises an eyebrow and lifts his nose; apparently gravediggers aren't held in high esteem. You aren't sure how these people think they're any better than you; the both of you live in this backwater village, for crying out loud. You roll your eyes as he beckons for you to follow, leading you through the lavishly decorated manor and up the stairs to the mayor's private study.

The mayor has been waiting for you. He's sitting at the head of an enormous desk, and flanking him are two burly, unfriendly looking men. They scowl at you. You've never seen them before, but their type tends to wander into town for the bars every once in awhile. The mayor glares at you, but his eyes are too wide; he looks furious, terrified and unsure all at once.

As soon as the manservant bows and excuses himself, he barks at you. "What do you want, DEMON? You here to finish the job?! Maybe turn me into a re-dead too? I wonder when you replaced poor Howard?! He wasn't ever the brightest boy, but he was kind enough! But I saw what I saw! Tentacles, horrible tentacles! And those glowing.. eyes!" He begins frothing at the mouth, looking more and more unstable.

You're sure you could bend him to your will. Make him forget, make him.. the voice of Majora whispers into your mind. "Anything you want. A mayor is a powerful puppet. It would be best that way. He could make your father suffer.. or maybe that girl." What do you do?

[]Attempt to explain rationally. You didn’t have anything to do with the re-dead, you were just using the power of a magic mask you found to deal with it.

You blink at the mayor's violent, erratic statements and sigh. "Okay, look. I know you saw some things, but you need to know, I AM Howard. Not some monster. That was me. I've recently gained some.. powers, I guess. And I used them to stop the re-dead. Nothing more, nothing less." You give him your most charming smile.

He looks at you for a few seconds without saying anything. You can see a vein bulging on his forehead. He then clears his throat and looks to one of the men standing on either side of him, looking at you menacingly, and then looks back at you. You see a grim determination in his eyes, one that wasn't there before. "Right. We're going to deal with this problem before anyone else is hurt. The whole town is in jeopardy, and I am the mayor! I will not stand idly by as some disgusting monster takes up in MY town, threatens MY citizens, and then tries to bully ME! Dave, circle around him and lock the door. Tom, you hold him down. We'll do this humanely. We owe Howard that much, at least."

You're going to have to move quickly. You wait just a second, and as the brutish man named Tom passes the desk and makes a go for the door, you leap into action, smashing into it and busting it off it's hinge. Nice house, shoddy doors, evidently. You shoulder-rush the nearby manservant and he falls into a heap with a cry of "OH MY!".

You dash down the stairs so fast you nearly fall, but you catch yourself at the last second. You're now in the rather spacious bottom floor of the manor. Majora's giggling echoes inside your mind. "It would take no effort at all to deal with them, with the way you are now. You're afraid of me, aren't you? I told you, we're on the same team. Unless you want your dreams to come true, you'd better listen to me. Those bad guys will want you dead, you know." What do you do?

You decide to run; There's no way the mayor will try to kill you out in the open! You dash around bookcases and valuable paintings and barge through the front door, but you can hear heavy footsteps fall not far behind you... and keep chasing you as you exit the manor. Shit, shit, shit. This is not good. You run as fast as you can, silently thanking your father for making you dig so often during your childhood. If you weren't in shape, there's no way you'd be able to keep ahead of this guy.

He continues chasing you right into the town center. Bystanders stop what they're doing and look on, and a few of them start jogging after you. You're going to have to make a decision. You figure you could lead him to the graveyard; your father should be awake now, but you aren't sure how well he's feeling.. You could also lead him to the market. You decide to make a mad dash for the graveyard. You need your father to help you if you're going to make it out of this one unscathed and without butchering anybody. As you charge through the town, more and more people begin following you and your procession, wondering why some thug followed by the mayor and ANOTHER thug are chasing after the gravedigger's son. You begin to put more distance between you and the man, but you can feel yourself reaching your limit. You won't be able to keep up this pace for long.

Finally, you breach the graveyard and see your father crouched down in front of Old Man Hendrickson's grave. As he hears you approach, he gets up quickly and turns to face you, eyes wide. He takes in the situation and narrows his eyes as he sees the man chasing you. You run to his side, and the man makes no indication of stopping, so your father calmly reaches down and picks up his shovel. He hefts it over one shoulder, whirls around, and just as the thug is about to tackle you to the ground, drives the flat end of it into the side of his head.

WHACK!

The thug sails quite a distance away, collapses in a heap of limbs and stops moving. Your father turns to the mayor and remaining thug, the man apparently named Dave, as well as the small crowd that has followed them, just to see what's happening. Your father's eyes blaze. "What's the meaning of this, Richard? Why are lowlifes chasing my son?"

When he noticed me, he ripped the beast to shreds with his horrible, disgusting tentacles, and then turned to me! It's a miracle I managed to escape unharmed, but I knew he wouldn't kill me in front of the whole town!" A few people murmur, shooting startled glances at you. Most of them look skeptical, eyeing the mayor oddly. "It's the truth, people! Mr. Hendrickson was transformed into a re-dead, and this.. this demon masquerading as Howard is the cause! He's got a fairy with him, too! You see?! Everyone knows fairies are signs of mischief and magic! I implore you, good people, hear my words! Have I ever led you astray before?! No! I always have the best interest of the town at heart! We must act, and quickly, before it decides to show its true colors and kill us all!"

Some people begin backing away from you in fear. Others advance toward you, fury and anger blooming on their faces. Your father stabs his shovel into the ground furiously. "STAND WHERE YOU ARE! I'll have no man touch my son, or I promise you, I'll show you a monster! These claims are outrageous! Hendrickson's corpse DID become a monster, but it's not my son who did it, Richard! He SAVED me from the beast! He should receive a medal, not a lynching! Stop this madness immediately!"

Things look like they'll get ugly pretty quick. The town seems to put a great deal of trust in the mayor, and they're slowly coming to his side. What do you do?

>13 vs DC 13

You point into the crowd, selecting familiar faces. "Lloyd, I've been coming into your store for years! If I were a monster, I wouldn't know that, would I?! Aaron, I helped bury your brother! Come on, don't do this!"

The crowd slows down, mumbling to themselves, most of them looking guilty. They stand back, quelled, but make no move to help you; they simply watch the mayor, waiting for something to happen. He grimaces at you, clearly irritated that you've managed to talk down the townsfolk. "Listen, monster. You might be able to fool them, but you can't fool me. I'm sure you have access to Howard's memories; how else would you fool a boy's own father?! I.. I'm sorry Frank. I understand what you must be feeling. I'm not going to kill your son."

You exhale, releasing the pent up breath you've been holding in. Thank the gi-

"..but I'm banishing you from Woodglenn. You're to leave immediately. I will harbor no monsters in MY town." You widen your eyes. Banished?! You look around at the townspeople, all of them looking quite sheepish, and they begin to disperse. The mayor shoots daggers at you with his frantic gaze, orders his thug to collect his fallen fellow, and they leave the graveyard. Your father looks at you and sighs.

"I'm sorry, Howard. I'm not sure what's wrong with the mayor, but he's clearly gone completely insane. I.. I'll see what I can do. Call a town meeting, discuss this. Maybe call a vote. I won't have you cast out of town."

You look down at your feet. You hate lying to your father, but you're not sure what else to do at this point. If he found out the mayor was slightly more truthful than he seemed, you aren't sure how your father'd take the news. What do you do?

You feel betrayed. You've known these people your entire life. You've helped them, laughed with them, cried with them. In a town this small, it almost feels like everyone is related. One big family. A family that casually betrays one of their relatives and excommunicates them from their own community.

What a joke. Your father must see the hurt on your face, as he clenches his fists and clears his throat. "Howard, I... Come with me." He turns abruptly toward your cabin, and walks inside of it. You follow him, curious as to what he's going to show or tell you.

Majora sneers at you from within. "You could have avoided all of this. But you were afraid to use my power. I told you, we're on the same team. Next time maybe you'll get smart and do something for yourself."

You bristle at the mask's words, growing even more frustrated, and enter your cabin. Your home. The one the town is trying to kick you out of. Your father is on a knee before his bed, rummaging around inside the chest he keeps his personal belongings in. He removes an old leather backpack and sets it on his bed. "You're leaving, Howard. I saw it on your face. You don't want to stay here, and I don't blame you. All this is happening very quickly, but.. it could be for the best."

You start to feel wounded, when he quickly adds: "..because I was about your age when I left my hometown and went to find adventure. Every man should go on an adventure at least once in his lifetime, Howard. Especially men from a family of gravediggers, like ours. I never wanted to be a gravedigger when I was young. I wanted to be an adventurer; a hero! And for a time, I.. well, that's a tale for another day, son. But I think it's time you go on your adventure. Aha! And you won't be going unprepared, either."

He holds up a worn but polished hammer, complete with leather grip. It gleams silver in the torchlight of your cabin. "The family hammer."

"This thing has seen me through a lot of rough times. I've slain countless monsters with it. And now, it passes to you. I hope you'll never have to use it, but if you do.." He grins at you. "It's not much different than smashing something with your shovel."

He gets up, grunting as his back creaks, and gathers up the tools he's pulled out for you. First, he hands you the backpack. It's of excellent quality, and has been used thoroughly. It seems quite durable and spacious. You unzip it and find an adult's wallet within. You look up at your father, and he shrugs.

"You'll need some money, and I've been saving up for awhile. It's not like I'll go hungry. The town still needs to pay the gravedigger. There's one hundred rupees in there. That should be more than enough to get you started, wherever you decide to go." Next, he hands you a belt with a few pouches on it and a loop to hold your hammer. You slip it on, finding it fits perfectly. When he hands you the hammer, you slip it into your belt. Your father looks at you, and nods.

"Yup. You look like an adventurer already. Where are you going to go, do you think? Have any ideas?"

Where are you going?

[]To Clock Town. Maybe somebody there will be able to answer your questions.

"I.. think I'll head to Clock Town first. We'll see what happens from there." You heave a sigh. Maybe this won't be so bad. You were getting tired of life in town anyway, and you're eager to find out more about this mask and the power you now wield.

Your father nods. "Yes, a good plan. There are many sights to be seen in Clock Town that you simply can't see here."

He places a hand on your shoulder. "You'd better go, then. It's not good to draw out goodbyes, after all. You'll do fine out there, son. Things will cool off while you leave, and I'll make sure there's a place for you to come home to when you get back. Now go! And come back a different man!" [x]Go say goodbye to Marcy.

You decide to go say goodbye to Marcy before you leave town. As you walk toward the general store, people seem to avoid you entirely. Nobody will meet your gaze. It's as if you've already left, and they're pretending you don't exist. Nail seems to think that's unacceptable.

"They cast you from your home, and they will not even look you in the eye?! This calls for drastic measures, dark one! You cannot abide this slight! You must destroy them all, or perhaps enslave the-" You quickly stuff him into your backpack. You aren't sure why you keep him around. Maybe you'd better just kill hi- Huh? No. That's a strange thought. Why would you kill him after going through all the trouble to save him? You shake your head and gather your thoughts. You're near the general store already.

As you approach, you see Marcy sitting on the porch, playing with the flower you gave her yesterday. She looks deep in thought, and quite distressed. You walk up and stand before her, and she looks up at you.

"O..Oh, Howard. I.. I heard what the mayor's said. I'm so sorry Howard.. I yelled at my parents. Told them how pathetic they were for letting something like this happen. I wish there was something I can do."

You frown and stare at her, at a loss for words. At least somebody cares that you're leaving. "It's.. fine, Marcy. No big deal. I've always wanted to go on an adventure, anyway. This is just a good excuse to leave a bit early. Heh." You try to give her a convincing smile, but feel like you fall sort of short. She frowns at you again. What do you do?

You say goodbye to Marcy, halfway tempted to invite her to come with you, but you quickly dismiss the thought. If the mask is to be trusted, which you doubt, there are going to be things coming after you. And they might end up being the least of your worries. "Well.. I guess I'd better get going. I'm sorry I couldn't take you on that walk, Marcy. It'll have to wait until I come back. You.. uh, you still want to go with me, right?"

She smiles sadly at you. "Yes. Of course. As soon as you get back." You nod to her and begin to leave, when she calls out to you. "Howard, wait! Good luck. With everything." You smile, wave at her, and walk off.

You head toward the mayor's house. There's not a lot of commotion around town right now, and nobody's really paying you any attention, so you get there without any trouble. You feel a burning urge to pay him back for all your troubles. Make him regret taking your hometown from you. But how?

It also seems like a good way to make him seem he was right after all. Mayor banishes a "demon" and on the day he leaves, the Mayor's house is suddenly haunted by something that overt? If you ask me, if we're using the mask for this at all, it should be something subtle or a minor annoyance. Something you'd expect a fairy or an imp to pull. Maybe make it so that there's a small streak of bad luck or a bad smell lingering around the house, just minor enough to get frustrated and fed up with but not enough to make a "CURSE!" kneejerk reaction.
>>
>>27716224

It seems like your house becoming haunted would be a sign you didn't banish the demon.

>>27716081
Curse him to have incurable insomnia. That's subtle enough, and with longlasting effects.
>>
>>27716234

Or it could be a sign that it's taking revenge. It should either be something you can do without magic or the mask altogether, or subtle enough that if someone does pick up on it, that it seems too tame to be something as evil as the mayor described.
>>
>>27716224
I would say its more subtle than setting the place down, so that's something

>>27716234
I think this would convince people that in fact both we were right that we were innocent as well as proving the mayor right that the town has something to fear. Hopefully this galvanizes them to be more prepared should dark forces find themselves at our old home.

I'd hardly call >>27716126 overt. Voices that only he can hear, and only when he goes to sleep? Sounds more like the mayor is just going crazy. Plus, as his sanity deteriorates it'll make it more likely people will think him banishing us was just the first sign of his paranoia.

>[x]Use the mask. Hex his house.
>1 (Critical Failure)

You decide to get revenge in a subtle sort of way. You don't want to hurt the mayor, but you definitely want to reduce his credibility; you can't have him spreading lies about you while you're gone. You've felt the mask's power before; you know you could make him see things that would show everyone how crazy he really is. He IS crazy, after all. Saying all those crazy things about you.

You remove the mask from your backpack and place it on your face, gathering your considerable willpower to both fight off it's influence and work it's magic. It's power flows over you. In fact, it cascades over you. Explodes through you. This is wrong. The mask never felt this powerful before. The dark magic pouring forth from it continues to grow, overwhelming your mind and body. It's as if a dam has burst, and you cannot withstand the flood.

This has to stop. You're not sure what's happening, but you can end this. You reach up and pull the mask off-

"Ha ha ha. Maybe you should have listened to me earlier. I told you we're on the same team. You messed things up. Don't worry. I'll fix it all." You feel your mouth move, and words spill forth. You cannot move. You cannot speak. You can do nothing... but you don't WANT to do anything. Why should you? You're on the same team, after all. You use its power all the time. Only fair it gets to use yours once in awhile, right? Yes. Absolutely. You kick off the ground and float into the air, inspecting the town from high above. We're going to have ever so much fun playing with them all. We have so many ideas. They cast you out. They refused to help you. They betrayed you. But don't worry. It's all just a game.

You cackle madly. Your power continues to grow, and grow, and grow.. Maybe you should get rid of this town and make a new one. Maybe you should get rid of this world and make a new one.

Time to play.

I wish we explained dad about the mask first. Hell, this was his graveyard, he probably knew something about this thing being there.

I hope Majora doesn't go after him or Marcy. So far, they're the only people on our side, and the mask needs at least some cooperation from us if it wants to achieve its goals.

Honestly it might not. All it has to do is bide its time we will eventually become completely corrupted. Once that happens then we are pretty much Majora himself.

We'll see. At the moment, all we can do is watch as Majora goes postal on our hometown.

Yeah I think anons just like to ruin shit cause putting a curse on the mayor should have been really obviously a very bad idea.

This is a pretty good image of what our character is doing.

Yeah, using an artifact possessed by a malevolent entity to seek revenge on somebody wasn't the smartest choice.

Maybe we can convince it somehow to just curse the mayor, and if it's so hellbent on wrecking stuff, that we go after the real bad guys? Doubt that'd work, though.

Yea pretty sure that's not going to happen. Majora said he was going to fix ALL of it. That sounds like a pretty bad curse on the land is going to go down. Might be something that they cant trace to us like poisoning the water like the swamp or it could be something as obvious as lightning from the sky.

>>
>>27717768
Sure.

Anyway, we probably should only use the mask when shit really hits the fan from now on. Focus on improving Howard himself, instead of Majora being our only chance at survival. So, willpower, some charisma, and a lot of training.
>>
>>27717801
Yeah. The hammer is quite the boon to be honest. Very powerful should manage to kill most things on the ground pretty quickly. The real problem will be anything that flies.
>>
>>27717813
Well, we have the flute Marcy gave us. Maybe we can modify it in some way?
>>
>>27717813
Hmm most likely a bad idea. sure we could probably plug the holes in the sides and make a blowdart tube but that would be more work when we could probably make our own blowdart tube with less effort.

I'm going to take the chance to say that we should find out about the origins of the mask and what its objective is, and who the Happy mask salesman is and his motive for wanting the mask. Both of these things could potentially kill us if we don't figure them out. Majora could want to destroy the world and the Happy mask salesman could want the power of the mask to either do the same or become a malevolent god.

Alright I'm going to go play the ps3 peace everyone! (If anyone is still in this thread that is)
