"Well, if we've learned anything, it's that Kay isn't dumb..." You say, rubbing your eyes from staring at Saunder's Academy's promotional pictures for so long. "Nothing but A1's in the foreground... Again" You say, leaning back away from the computer screen.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing heavy tank "Black Jack" and you've spent the last forty-five minutes pouring over Saunders' website for any clue as to what tanks they'd be using against you. So far the best answer you could come up with was 'At least one M4A3 (You'd seen the 76mm gun sticking out from behind another tank," A Firefly and a whole lot of M4A1s.'

"At least they've got pictures." Miho says, leaning back into the couch. "Kay's very open, very proud- Kuromuromine hardly had any pictures of tanks on the website. Even then it was mostly just one of our Tigers and a couple of Panzer IVs." She sighs. "They still don't have any pictures of the Tiger II and I know they've got that thing running by now..."

>"Wait, Kuromuromine's got a Tiger II?"

Also the greater value the setting societies have placed on old tanks probably meant a lot more where preserved in working condition.

"Wait." You say, looking over at Miho. "What?" You say flatly.

Miho looks at you. "A Tiger II." She says as if you should've known all along.

"Kuromuromine has a Tiger II?" You say, sighing. It wasn't exactly an immediate problem, merely something to keep you awake at night until the finals. The Tiger II had perhaps one of the most legendary reputations in the tanking world- in the War it had never been penetrating frontally by another tank- those few that were knocked out were overwhelmingly disabled by aircraft, artillery or simply broke down or ran out of fuel and were destroyed by their own crews. This, combined with the fact that they were about as rare as a tank got, meant that they were often talked about but seldom seen.

"They've been working on restoring it for about two years now-" She says, pulling out her phone. "It was found under a road in France." A few menus later and she's scrolling through a slideshow of her phone's pictures- You see her and a taller girl you assume is her sister in Black Forest tanking uniforms, a view from the commander's hatch of a Tiger tank, a selfie of her and some girls you don't recognize in front of a Panzer IV- but finally makes it some pictures of Kuromuromine's King Tiger.

"It was in really rough shape when we got it- they weren't exactly gentle pulling out some of the internal pieces since they intended to just make a memorial out of it..." She scrolls through various pictures through the tank's early restoration. "We had to special order a new engine and transmission from Daimler..."

>>
>>27712116
The Sentinel was designed from the get-go to fit a 17pdr, and bigger, although it's only rumours whether they actually did put anything bigger in a Sentinel.

There's one rumour that they took a captured German 88mm from a Tiger tank and put one in a Sentinel, but I haven't really found anything saying that they did actually do that.

I think a 20pdr wouldn't be hard if that was the case though.

would it be allowed in Senshado?
I don't think it was actually in the war.
>>
>>27712438
Was prototyped before V-J day, but was designed for the western front, so they ran out of germans to shoot it at.
>>
>>27712438
According to wiki, due to the war in Europe ending they decided to only go with a limited production run. But someone decided that there wasn't any use for them, and production got delayed until after VJ day. There were only a few pilot models made.

The requirements for Senshado is if was designed and had prototypes before VJ day, so it just counts.
>>
>>27712438
If World of Tanks' wiki is to be believed, it would be: http://wiki.worldoftanks.com/T29
Tanks that were prototyped/planned before VJ-day (IIRC, might be some time in 1946) are allowed.
>>
>>27712256
nah they had a variant with a 25 pdr.l
>>
It's actually crazy what tanks the rules potentially allow: The Maus, of course, but also things like the IS-2, IS-3, the T34(120mm main gun) T30 (155mm main gun), and T28/95. The E100 also makes it in. (The hull of the prototype was almost completed when the factory was captured- it was really just missing the tracks and turret.)
>>
>>27712602
hey. you.

>>
>>27712516
The official surrender was 2Sep45.

The T29 project started March 44, and only a few were built by war's end, it never saw real service.
>>
>>27712622

One of my original ideas was to give them a T30. But I thought the 155mm gun would've stretched the tanks plot armor pretty thin, since simply the shock of that shell would probably liquify anything inside the tank it hit.
>>
>>27712602
Also the initial runs of the T-54.

The size of the gun you can fit in a tank isn't determined by bore size but by the amount of room you have inside the turret for the gun to recoil. The velocity, pressure and length of the gun are what (I think) contribute to this.

The size of the turret is determined by the turret ring, which is the part of the hull in which the turret attaches to and rotates on. Bigger turret ring = bigger turret = bigger gun.

The 25pdr, while being of a larger bore size than the 20pdr it was only a medium velocity, short barreled artillery gun with relatively low recoil. It was made for lobbing high-explosive around.
The 20pdr, comparatively, was a high velocity 83mm cannon made for flinging armour-piercing ammo at high speed in flat trajectories. Of course, it has a much longer recoil length than the 25pdr. I don't know the exact length of that recoil though.

For reference, the 20 pounder is the cannon seen here. I reckon a shortened version would work in a Sentinel, like how the Israelis modified post-war Shermans with 105mm and I think 90mm guns.

In WoT terms, the 25pdr is a derpgun and the 20pdr is a sniper.

The 20pdr is also one of the guns they put in the Centurion.

They never made plans for bigger guns than the 17pdr in Sentinels, so a Sentinel tank with a 20pdr isn't going to appear in my little story, but they probably could've if this was an alternate history where Australia had the industrial base and inclination to go with extensive production of the Sentinel. The fact that it could've been done is what matters to me.

God I love this fucking tank.

Then in the 60s this beaut rolled out. 105mm bore-evacuated smoothbore that could fire HEAT and Sabot rounds.

The British still haven't caught on to the smoothbore concept.
>>
"So... Anything else you think Black Forest might bring against us?" You say, looking over at the former Kuromuromine tank commander. You sigh and laugh a bit. "Well, at least they don't have a Maus, right?" You say, laughing a bit- there were only two Maus ever made- one of them was destroyed by the Soviets and the other was in Kubinka. "Right?" You say.

Miho changes the topic back to the task at hand. "I think we're going about this wrong..." She says. "We're trying to figure out what she's got when we should be assuming she's got everything." She moves the laptop onto her lap. "We just need to figure out what she'd want to use..."

That's... actually a pretty good idea. "So then, Miho, if you were Kay, what would you use against us?" You say, prodding the brown-haired PzIV commander into thought.

"She's not basing her team against defeating us- as far as she's concerned she's already beaten us." She says, going through various battlefield maps. "She's looking to build her team around what she expects from Black Forest and Pravda." Miho says, narrowing her eyes as she thinks hard. "Both Pravda and Black Forest have a lot of heavy tanks. Kay knows this and she knows that she won't be able to fight them toe to toe. She's going to need numbers and, most importantly, mobility. So Jumbos are out- Too slow."

"A1's and A2's probably aren't going to see much use either..." You say, trying to narrow things down as quickly as Miho, but she's already a step ahead.

"They might not have a choice- rules have a maximum of twenty tanks. If she doesn't have enough A3s she might fill out with lower-end Shermans."

>"So Kay's going to use strength of numbers to defeat us?"

That's because they have a boner for their HESH rounds, which don't work right when fired from a smoothbore. I will refrain from judgement as to whether HESH is good or not, and whether it's worth the tradeoff of reduced effectiveness from APFSDS-T as that can often cause a shitstorm.

Miho stares hard at the computer, rapidly changing between various websites, maps, documents... You can already see the gears in her head spinning around at maximum RPM- She's figuring things out and putting a hell of a lot of mental effort into it. There isn't a lot you can do at this point except distract her. You rub her shoulder a bit before standing up. "Going to go check on Gramps for a minute. Let me know if you need anything!"

Miho barely nods as you stand up and walk into the kitchen- by now the air is thick with the acrid smell of chopped onions, peppers, sauteing beef and the seemingly random selection of spices that go into his chili. "Hard at work?" He says. "Going to be a while before chili's ready- should've given me a bit more time!" He says, moving a chopping board of onion into the pot. "Where's that messy-haired one? Yukari, right?" He asks.

"Oh, off on some secret mission, I suppose." You say smiling. "Said she couldn't make it tonight and she wouldn't elaborate..." She shrug. "Suppose we'll have to manage."

"Or a date..." He says, smiling back at you. "Might've lost your chance- I always said you move too slow with things..." He says, waving a red-tinged stiring spoon at you.

You blink and take a seat. "Somehow I don't think that Yukari is out on a date." You aren't sure if she even knows what a date is- in fact you're almost postive, from experience, that she doesn't know what a date is even when she's on something damn close to one. "Whatever it is, though, it must be pretty important- I think by the end of the night the last time she was here she wanted you to adopt her!"

He turns from removing most of the seeds from a small and wicked looking dark-brown-black pepper. "Where do I need to sign?" He says, grinning.

You smile. It was definately more fun when Yukari was around- "So, Gramps, what do you think of Miho?" You say, leaning your head back against the wall and watching him cook.

"Why? Got eyes on her?" He says and you choke- "Guess that answers that question." He smiles warmly. "Good kid- but she's got some past behind her- I see it in her eyes." He takes a moment to finely mince the black pepper before dropping it in the pot. "Girls like that- you gotta keep up with 'em, don't let their baggage get out in front of ya."

He's right, of course, you're still not entirely sure how someone so... nice... could come from somewhere as fearsome as Black Forest Peak Academy.

"What was that pepper?" You ask, as he scrapes what's left of the small, twisted little pepper into the pot and immediately puts the lid on it and opens a window. You notice this and worry- you're used to spicy cooking by now, but Grandpa can take things a bit too far when left to his own devices.

"Syrian Black Asp Chili." He says. "Dried and aged- it's supposed to be pretty hot. The guy I bought it from says its something like six-hundred-thousand on the Scoville scale..." He shrugs. "Said the locals use it to keep wild dogs and mountain bears from taking their children at night..."

You gulp and silently stand up and go check the fridge for milk- Half a gallon should be sufficent. Should be. You resolve that you will be eating tonight's dinner with gloves. Sometimes that helps. "So... How do you keep out ahead of that baggage you were talking about?" You ask, grabbing a soda and closing the fridge.

He smiles, starting in on a jalapeno pepper. "That's the tricky bit- best way is to just keep their mind of it. That usually works for a while..." He says with a shrug.

"What do you mean it works for a while?" You say, thinking that he'd have at least have some semi-perminant answer. "Alright, what happens when you can't make them forget anymore?" You say, cracking open the can of of soda.

By this point he's just looking at you like you're dense. Which, when it comes this sort of thing, you are. You're so dense you're practically degenerate matter. He spells it for you: "Well, then you gotta help 'em face it down." He says, looking out of the kitchen towards where Miho is still sitting. "Or run far and fast." He shrugs and goes back to his cooking.

You're pretty sure you're not gonna get anything else out of him on the subject, so you grab another soda from the fridge and trudge back out to the front room. >Last time on Aussies und Sentinels:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/27269790/#p27276111

- - - - - -

The storm had arrived quickly, but not unexpectedly. The dark clouds had been looming over the far northern horizon all morning, encroaching over the land slowly but surely. And now, thirteen minutes after noon, the storm had arrived. The noise inside the tank was thunderous as billions of heavy raindrops impacted on top of the hull, and visibility was down to near zero. Alysha did her best to peer into the rain from the commander's cupola, but the thick cloud cover and heavy downpour did her no favours. A bolt of lightning struck in the middle distance, and the accompanying thunder echoed throughout the crew compartment.
"I'm going to get tinnitus at this rate!" yelled Ellie, the gunner.
"What?" her loader, who was sitting right next to her, yelled back.
Ahead of the tank, Alysha spied a depression in the ground, running perpendicular to their advance. She leant down into the crew compartment and yelled at the top of her voice. "STOP!" The driver, Vincent, quickly brought the Sentinel tank to a stop. Alysha stood back up in her cupola and quickly popped open the commander's hatch to get a better view.

The Rice River was in front of them. What had only minutes ago been a dry, dusty riverbed was now a mud-filled ditch, and even now a stream was flowing along its length. They had to cross the river; now, before it became too deep to cross, or worse, a flash flood arrived. Alysha closed the hatch again, already soaked in the brief seconds she was outside of the tank, and grabbed the shoulder of Sarah, her loader and radio operator.
"Tell the other two tanks that we cross here and now, but be careful not to get bogged down! A flash flood could be on the way, and I don't want to lose one of our tanks, much less the crew inside it!"
"Roger that, commander! All tanks, this is Lead!"
>>
As Sarah relayed the orders to the other two tanks in the team, Alysha continued to peer out of her viewports. What had been ankle-high water was now quickly becoming knee-high. They had to get moving.
"Orders relayed!" cried Sarah.
"Good! Vincent! Let's get this ball rolling already, we don't have much time!"
The tank shuddered into gear, and began clawing its way through the mud and grass and into the river bed. Mud and detritus sprayed everywhere. With a splash, their tank plunged into the rapidly rising water. Aly crossed her fingers and grit her teeth. The going was slow, but with a squelch, the tank emerged on the other side and climbed out of the river bed. Success!
But only briefly.
"Commander! Number three tank has been bogged!"

Aly turned to peer out the back of her turret. There, the first of her two supporting sentinels. Commanded by Murrie, the hot-headed, aggressive and excitable. The right side of the tank had sunk into the muddy river bed, and the driver was desperately revving the track to escape the clutches of the mud.
"Bugger me!" Alysha cursed.
The sentinel wasn't completely bogged, Aly noticed. As the tank fought to gain some ground, the right track steadily emerged from the mud. It was slow going, but they could make it. As long as...
Alysha turned to look upstream, and through the haze of falling rain her worst fears were confirmed. A wall of brown, muddy water was approaching, the flash flood they had been dreading. Oh no, oh god no... Murrie's tank was struggling. They weren't going to make it.
>>
Aly made a snap decision. "Vincent! Turn this bloody thing around!"
"What the hell do you mean!?" he shouted back.
"They'll never make it alone! We're going in and pushing them back out the other end!" Vincent stared at her incredulously. "Don't give me that damn look, just do it!"
"You're the boss!" He turned back to his controls and began to bring the tank around.
Aly wasn't done yet. "Sarah! Tell 'em to start pulling a full reverse! Tell 'em we'll help!"
"Roger wilco, commander!"
Vincent finished bringing the tank about, and pushed it into forward gear. They tilted back into the muddy river, and with a loud clang! the hulls of the two tanks touched. Vincent revved the engine again, and then the tank began pushing. Slowly, slowly, they were making it out. Alysha glared out her left side viewport, willing the wall of water to come that little bit slower.
"Come on, come on..." she muttered under her breath.
And then, the resistance gave way as Murrie's tank came free from its bog. The tank went into full speed reverse, and with the help of Alysha and her own tank, made it up the riverbed with little effort. Alysha's own Sentinel followed suit. And with a rush, the flood waters swept past the area they had been only moments before.
>>
Alysha sighed explosively. Below and in front of her, the gunner, Ellie, grasped the shoulder of Sarah, her loader. Vincent piped up from the front seat.
"That was cutting it damn close!"
Aly cut him back. "Your name is Vinn bloody Dezel! You're The Wheelman! A mere /river/ can't stop you."
"Oh, piss off!" he replied, but she heard the smile behind his voice.
"Commander," said Sarah. "Murrie personally sends you her dearest gratitude and applauds your effort and gallantry in saving her, her crew and her tank."
"Really?" said Ellie, beside her. "In those words?" Her disbelief was evident.
"It was more like 'That woman deserves a fuĀ¬ckin' medal!', but the feeling's the same." Everyone was acting a bit silly, but Aly knew that they all needed to let off steam after a rush like that, herself included. She sighed in relief again.
Sarah paused to listen to an incoming broadcast. "Tank number two reports that they're still stuck on the other side of the river."
"Damn," cursed Alysha. She looked through the back of her cupola and spotted her number two begin to turn and drive away.
"They say they're going to try and find another place to cross, and they'll meet us on the other side."
"Tell 'em good luck."
"Wilco."
This left two Sentinel tanks against two Cromwells: a pretty even match, with one upgunned lead tank, and a smaller gunned support tank to back it up. Alysha collected herself. The Cromwells would catch up to them soon.
She got Sarah to pass her the handset and announced over the comm:
"Right, everyone, time to calm down and button up. There're still two enemy tanks out there looking to hunt us down. We gotta get to them first. Let's head straight east to follow this river and then at about square zero-four-two-eight we'll cross the rise to the south and continue east in defilade."
"Roger that."
"Let's get moving then."

"So..." You say, taking a seat next to Miho on the couch. "My grandfather is using peppers named after deadly animals in his Chili tonight." You say warn. "So yeah- might want to test it a bit on the back of your hand- y'know to see if it burns- before you take a bite." You take a swig of soda. "Learned that trick pretty early on..."

She looks over at you and is obviously trying to figure out whether you're joking or not. You really aren't. "Thanks? Is it really that hot?" Trying to prod you to see if you really are just overstating things.

"I suggest having a glass of milk handy..." You say. "So... Get a glimpse into the mind of Saunders yet?" You ask, leaning forward to get a better look at the screen. "How many Shermans is she going to try to overwhelm us with?"

Miho smiles. "She's not going to use that trick again-" Miho says. "No- she's going to use numbers to her advantage, but not in one big rush- People already adapted to that strategy by keeping a the flag tank and a few others back in a defensive position." She brings up a map. "Oh. Here's where we'll be fighting them, by the way-" You're a bit disappointed- rolling hills, forests and brush- you'd been hoping for something that'd include some urban fighting- nothing equalizes numbers like an urban fight.

"Lots of forests and hills..." You say. "Plenty of spots to hide tanks... What's her angle? How's she going to deal with us?" You ask, looking over at Miho. She's smiling a bit- you're almost where she is, but you just don't have the torque to get over that final hill.

"She's going fishing for tanks." She says with a clever smile.
