Let's see...news.

So for those of you who don't follow the twitter, Dad's due back from Ahfganland today. Long story short: I might have to cut the thread off early to go eat. Dunno yet, we'll see.

Other than that? no news.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

and the ever present pastebin primer, in case you don't want to faff about with an archive binge: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

and if neither of those things is your speed, just ask in thread! If one of the guys doesn't help out, I will.

++

After meeting the three witches a few hours ago, you and your escort- who, apparently, now can't even so much as look at you without blushing, giggling, and looking away- were able to meet a few others, including several from Iceland. Most of those girls were looking around, wide-eyed at their surroundings. It took a few attempts to get out of Konstantina that the vast majority had been blind, either by birth or by accident, and had just recently had their sight restored. You took a second to process that- in the US, that's still largely science fiction, though you know there's some heal witches, the oldest and best, that can do that sort of thing. You know for sure Georgette had to fix damage to your eyes when she healed you after the crash, but, supposedly, these are different- far less magic involved, just a little help from a heal witch. Available on a much larger scale.

1/3
>>
Frankly, it's kind of scary. The medical technology here is leaps and bounds ahead of anything you've ever seen before, and must be horrifically expensive. Konstantina's been no help there, mentioning only that the program that resulted in herself was far more expensive, and that the motherland could easily afford these things. You haven't seen Putin today, though you don't think you were supposed to, other than the offer Konstantina mentioned. You're pretty sure you can guess what it is, you're not sure how you feel about it, or taking him up on it. So far, the place has seemed on the level- even the allied witches have few complaints, other than not being allowed out, even on their striker flights they're monitored by Putins's guards.

Which leads to another question- you've seen some of his witches. More than a few of them wear the characteristic black bodysuit and red star of the Moscow academy witches Katya told you about. Those ones just regard you with a blank stare, or, at best, a look of confusion. They leave you alone, you think, entirely due to Konstantina's presence- whatever failings she may have in relationships, she appears to have one hell of a reputation on base. But how was Putin, who's apparently working against a good majority of the soviet government, able to get these witches, and then get them to remain loyal to him?

These are all questions you need to ask- and meant to ask earlier, but, apparently, you fell asleep en route somewhere, and Konstantina refused to wake you- or allow you to be woken without getting a few hours of sleep. It's hard to be angry at her, for whatever reason- she honestly seems to have felt she was acting in line with whatever plan you had when she allowed you to take a short nap. You woke up on your own after a couple hours- refreshed, but angry that you'd allowed yourself to slip like that. Maybe the five extra miles weren't a great idea, you muse, though it's too late to do anything about it now.

2/3
>>
You've still got time to look around- you're told there's some more allied witches up on a guided training exercise with some of Putin's witches as escorts, or there's the Lazarus facility you could look through, though you're not sure what you'd see there. There's Putin's offer to consider, still, and, of course, you'd like to ask him a few more questions while you have the chance. You could also go see about trying to talk with some of the witches you'd met earlier, though you haven't seen them since Kathrine called you a 'stupid squid', and don't really know how to go about looking for them.

[] Go see if you can find the three witches from earlier, they seem to be your best point of contact.
[] Go talk to some of the girls from Iceland- they'll probably have a more unbiased opinion.
[] Let's go see what Putin's offer is.
[] Go see if you can observe the allied witches on training, just to make sure.

Slider is pure, so pure she is kinda disgusted by it because she knows other girls aren't as pure as she is. She acts the way she does because she wants to join what she perceives to be some sort of social club that currently consists of Maverick and...people she thinks have gone all the way, which includes anyone that isn't her.

Of course we don't know anything about Ice's relationship progress, if she's had former lovers, but she's probably been too frigid for that especially after being given a command (though I bet she's tried with Slider but it all got ridiculously awkward and the two never talked about it again). It's obvious that Katya has...experience, or at least attempts at experienced forced upon her. Fuckin' rapist reds.

[x] Let's go see what Putin's offer is.

You step out of the staff car long enough to stretch, carefully working the soreness out of your shoulder. Too many high-G turns throwing you against your straps has done some damage there, you think, though it's not bad, just annoying. Like so many things, you figure it'll just haunt you later in life.

Konstantina watches you for a second, then looks away when you turn to regard her. “I trust my darling slept well?” She mumbles, looking at her boots and twisting the toes of one in the dirt.

“Well enough,” You reply. “But we've got things to do. Let's go see what Putin wants.”

She smiles- you catch it on the corner of her lips, even with her looking down. “Of course, my love.”

She motions for you to get back in the car, then follows suit, closing the door behind her. Your driver, a younger trooper, apparently detached for the job, looks in his rear view at you. Konstantina gives him some quick orders in Russian, and you're off again, moving through the relatively empty streets of the post towards the admin building.

If 'quiet' described the base at your arrival, it certainly isn't now. The streets aren't busy by any stretch of the imagination, but all of the other traffic is military in nature. Trucks shuttling supplies and troops, a few of those lightweight tanks- BTRs or BMPs, you can't remember which- a pair of flatbeds with strikers in transport racks drive by, causing you to do a double-take.

1/2
>>
“Those were NATO strikers!” You exclaim, looking over your shoulder. Sure enough, F-14 and F-15 model strikers occupy the transport racks, along with a scattering of Tornado and Mirage units.

Konstantina looks over her shoulder, then nods without every really directly looking at you. “Yes, I believe comrade Putin is allowing witches to be reunited with their equipment. The Icelander witches we met, they will fly soviet, of course. But the other girls, they have developed attachments to their equipment. Foolish, it is just equipment, but that is how they are.”

You don't respond, unsure of exactly what to say. You're saved from having to by the car coming to a sudden stop, pulling up outside the admin building. You and your escort are quickly waived through the guards- they seem to be thicker than usual, posted at more doors and junctions than you remember.

Putin's office is occupied by himself and Colonel Petrov. Konstantina closes the door when you step in, and Putin motions for you to sit.

“Commander Bishop.” He greets with a nod and an offered drink. “Have you been enjoying your stay?”

[x] It's not bad, definitely not what I expected.

“It's hard to enjoy work no matter how you cut it,” You say, with a slight grin, “but it's not bad. It'd definitely not what I was expecting.”

Putin laughs at that. “That would usually be the case here. Many witches are terrified of what will happen to them when they're first brought here. As you can see, most of them quickly find that their fears are completely baseless. Even the troublemakers.”

You smile. “I seem to recall meeting a certain British and a certain German witch...”

He grunts. “Yes, those two. However, while their antics can be amusing, I have a proposal for you.”

You nod, and he continues without prompting.

“We know you were badly injured over Alaska. While we have every faith that grandmother Lemare was able to heal you completely, we also know that they were forced to leave fragments of your aircraft in your ribs, dangerously close to your lungs.”

1/2
>>
You nod, well aware of this- Nixon had said as much, then reassured you that it wouldn't be a problem during your career, though it 'might cause you issues' later on in life. Not that seems to be unusual at all, so far.

“While your doctors may not think it will be an issue, Sergi, our chief doctor here, has reviewed the available records, and believes it will be. He's offered to Remove the aircraft fragments and give you a comprehensive series of... upgrades.” He says the last word with some hesitation, as if searching for the right phrase.

“New eyes, lung lining, heart augmentation, among other things.” He continues, sliding a folder across the desk at you. “It was designed for the best of our pilots, but he's not going to be...available for them. He answers to the premier directly, now.”

“My love would be completely unstoppable with these augments.” Konstantina says, happily. “and he would have eyes like mine!”

Somewhere in Russia, Comrade Stork, chief of the midwives, matron of the biggest medical facility in Russia, lies in her bed. Her eyebrows have been twitching for the past month.

Surely it could not have been that youg, impressionable witch who visited her when she was a kid. Certainly it was not her referring to the time she had to teach said young witch about how reproduction happened.

The lesson did not go well. She was too unruly, too boisterous, too distracted by all the shiny things to even listen. In the end she had to resort to a children's story to explain the whole damn thing.

Comrade Stork regretted every single moment of that fateful day. She hoped that the young witch did not misunderstand.

To add onto this, we should probably take the internal upgrades, or at minimum get the tomcat bits removed, but like I said, going back with overt upgrades, like the eyes, would probably poison the well for us trying to explain that Putin is on the level, especially if they think we have mind control implants or some shit

Also, getting those augments is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they might implant surveillance devices in us, and the navy might wonder if we're entirely our own man. On the other hand, it should drastically allow us to improve our combat performance, which will be needed with the martians, and it would let NATO at least take a look at this new technology.

>[X] “When can they see me?”

I'm worried about what's going to happen when the Martians invade, to be honest. I think we need the augments if we don't want to become the limiting factor in our aircraft's combat performance. We have no idea what the aliens are going to try and hit us with, but it'll probably be a huge improvement on what they used in the last war.

[x] “I'll... need to think on this.”

“I'll.... need to think on this.” You say, after reviewing the contents of the folder. “I appreciate the offer, but there's a lot of complications.”

Putin nods. “The offer is, as you say, a standing one. If you ever change your mind, let us know and we will be happy to see you.”

Konstantina, next to you, sighs. “Truly, your own abilities are more than enough, my darling. I only wish you would allow the soviet people to help you. So far, you have only met with that traitor, and surely she is only attempting to seduce you...”

She stops after a sharp look from Petrov. “I am sorry.” She says. “I allowed my emotions to speak for me.”

Petrov chuckles. “I'm sure, comerade witch, that, were she trying to seduce him, he would be faithful to you regardless.” You can't help but notice the grin the bastard puts on when he says it. Your revenge, eventually, will be epic, you think.

She brightens considerably at that, though. “O-of Course! I am sure he is. My love would not be tempted by such trivial things as her anyway.”

“Returning to the point,” Putin says somewhat drily, with Petrov translating around his laughter. “Commander Bishop, what can we do to help you convince your superiors we're on the level, as you say?”

“I'm going to need some of the witches,” You say. “As a gesture of good faith. I'd also like as much data as you can give me.”

Putin nods. “The data will be limited, by necessity. This is to protect us- the premier would move on this base, if he knew it existed. We cannot allow that to happen. As for the witches, I believe I know a few.” He smiles. “They can make trouble back home. I will send a note to have them ready to leave as soon as you are.”

You nod. “I wish I had more time to look around.”

Putin nods. “You are, of course, welcome to stay as long as you wish, but our time may be running out. The Premier has said he wishes to tour Berlin before the month is out, and the guards armies are organizing to make that a reality. We had assumed you would want to carry that information to your superiors as well.”

He hands you another folder. “The guards are all his, almost directly. Most of the regular army is split,
but the majority of the air forces- and, critically, most of the witches- are on our side. His push on Berlin will have sparse air cover.”

Petrov nods. “And, for the most part, the west of the Ural mountains is ours. Megalith is guarded by our troops, right now, though the premier has stated his intention to move several guards regiments there as well.”

“Regardless, Commander Bishop. Do you wish to stay another day, or do you wish to return to your unit? I am sure your Comrades miss you.”

Guess I'm not against giving Stalinka a patch or something.

oh... ask Putin off to the side "with me leaving, i hope Stalinka won't become even MORE crazed over me. But if she becomes too much for you, send her over to me, i'll try to calm her down."
>>
if things happen the way I think they will, we're going to end up fighting alongside Stalinka to defend megalith
>>
>>27649808
but at least leave our jacket to Stalinka to keep and a photo of us. so maybe we'll be a bit calmer... i hope.
>>
>>27649694
I know we want the fragments out, but they're not an issue at the moment. It'll likely take at least a day to remove them, and Frank needs to get that data back to the spooks ASAP! Not to mention, Frank will be in for a quarantine and full debrief when he gets back. Any physical changes will cast suspicion on Frank's trustworthiness. Get back in one piece. Get the surgery done when we have peace.
>>
>>27649848

Nein.

The guards will take over megalith.

Putins men will fight a rearguard action to open the shaft for Fronk to dive into.

>>
>>27650119
Occasionally. But a meter only does just that; a quick polaroid reference gives me a lot of other data too.

Plus until digital light meters got common they were a bitch to calibrate and maintain, as well as expensive, so I never developed a liking for them. I'm used to Polaroids, and until something radically better happens, I see no reason not to keep using one as needed.

[x] “I'm done here. Take me back to the fleet.”

You look around. “I'm done here. I guess it's time to head back.”

Putin nods. “There will be an aircraft waiting for you.”

“M-my darling is leaving?” Konstantina says, her voice full of confusion and betrayal. “You never told me this! Why would he come merely to leave?! No! He can't leave! I won't let him!”

“Konstantina, now is not the tim-” Petrov starts, but she cuts him off, her voice growing more frantic.

“He can't leave! The other witches covet him for themselves! And he is here now! We can give him the vampir! He is the best pilot in the world, we cannot simply allow him to return to his fleet and risk his life when we will need him! This is foolishness! No! He cannot go!” She yells, looking around, her eyes wide.

Both Putin and Petrov look marginally worried- for good reason, you think. She's slightly unbalanced, and apparently just this side of 'the most powerful witch in the history of ever barring maybe Merlin and we're really not sure about that'. It's enough to give anyone pause.

But you, you're a fighter pilot- one of the best. You can't pause in a time like this- hesitation is death. Instead, you grab her wrist, and tug her into a hug- her arms hanging limply by her side in shock. “You trusted me before. Trust me now.” You say, quietly.

She's probably too shocked for tears- you feel her twitch a few times, but only a stammered response- in Russian- comes out. You have to help her to a chair in the office when you let go- her legs don't seem to work real well right now.

>>
Petrov escorts you out while a pair of VDV troopers and a witch step into the office. You hear some laughter after a short conversation- one that Petrov doesn't translate. Still, he cracks a grin.

“You do know,” You say, walking out the door of the building, “That I'll have to get you back for that comment to her, right?”

He laughs. “Of course. Why else would I have said it? Our operative told us of the hijinx that sometimes occur in your squadron. I felt perhaps that they would lighten the gloom that pervades the headquarters building. I look forward to it.”

You return to the airbase after a short drive- three witches, along with a few VDV troops, stand near the plane, holding a conversation. Petrov frowns. “Where are the other two?” He asks.

One of the witches- Ashley- shrugs. “Sorry, I don't know. They said they had to get something, then ran off. That was fifteen minutes ago.”

Petrov sighs. “We have some time, but I doubt any of you want to wait longer than necessary.” he issues some orders to the VDV troops, and they, along with one of the witches, turn to leave.

The witch, however, pauses, and hands you a small satchel. She says something to you in Russian, then joins the paras on the their way.

Gaming a poll would take no effort what so ever. The more you know.
>>

Very.

All this hue.
>>
Petrov looks at you, then at the satchel. “She says it's for one of her girls. Katya Litvyak.” He smiles. “Probably letters. Mail is rather hard to get across borders these days.”

The other witch turns out to be Polish and anxious to go home as well. Her augments show clearly- part of the side of her face, an eye, and arm, and you suspect down under her shirt as well. She shrugs when she catches you looking. “I called in a strike on myself.” She says in heavily accented English. “I believed I was going to die anyway and wanted to take as many with me as I could.”

Your chance at small talk is interrupted by a whoop and the snort of a diesel engine and the clatter of tank treads.

You turn around to find Jackie riding with her top half sticking out of the turret of a- oh god.

“Where did she find a churchill tank?” Ashley asks, her voice in amazement. “W-wait! That's what she and kat were doing over by the base exchange!”

“Drive me closer!” Her voice carries across the base, waving her claymore. You as watch a pair of BTRs and one of those light tanks from before barrel in behind the ancient tank. “I want to hit them with my sword!”

What's more plausible: a watched defector passing messages back, or some random clerk that a Soviet agent chatted up in a bar? There is literally no reason to suspect Katya at this point, as the intel could have come from just about anywhere.

I am using logic, you're using your dick and it's been pointing at Katya since she was introduced. You're also using your imagination by dreaming up some random non-character "operative" who could be doing this as opposed to acknowledging Katya's ability as a signals witch.

She's the only person who is has direct contact with us who has witnessed the hijinks and could report on them with any real accuracy to Petrov and Putin WITHOUT raising suspicion. Seems to have worked on you, if it's true.

Oh wow, waifu ad hominem, how shall I ever overcome this paragon of debating.

How about that Intelligence, assuming they're not complete morons, actually knows what signals witches can do. Or that the hundreds of other personnel on the base can also find a simple radio? Let's not forget that Petrov never described them to us in detail, as opposed to vague rumors of funny shit everyone in the fleet can know. It's almost as if there are plenty of people other than Katya can do the same thing as she could've done and we shouldn't judge things with our current amount of evidence. Not to mention the stupidity of sending one of their most high profile witches instead of sending some other to spy on us. But no, let's continue fearmongering ok?
>>
>>27651246
Okay. At what point was it indicated that this was an accurate account of our hijinx? Hell, it could be random rumors that Putin thinks is our "hijinx". Slider, Mav, Goose, any witch on base could've talked about it in the cafe or something; from there, people have ears, will repeat it, and eventually some random low-level operative hears funny stories about witches that he passes on to his handler.

You, however, are proposing that Katya, whose loyalty is almost without doubt at this point, who is watched carefully by ONI, is sneaking around to report on hijinx.

Hell, if she was a spy, she'd likely be told not to report on random stuff like this, because any communication from her potentially compromises what would be a very valuable agent.
>>
Funny, I figured they just had someone rifle through the witches diaries while we were away.

>trusting intelligence

Notable intelligence failures in '89:
Failing to predict a build up to hostilities and allowing NATO to get caught with its pants down.

Repeatedly failing to uncover information and status of multiple superweapons, including failing to uncover the presence of two Martian Dreadnaught escorts for the air carrier, information that could have changed the fate of the Kitty Hawk.

Failure to uncover the existence of the Nosferatu prior to the war ( or if they did know of it, failure to assess it as a combat capable unit as opposed to an experimental testbed fucking off in a desert somewhere).

Complete and utter failure to uncover the eventual Chinese involvement of the invasion of mainland Japan.

Intel hasn't exactly been batting a thousand here, jackass.

>>27651440
Counterintelligence isn't the same as intelligence. You put enough effort into tracking somebody on your own turf, you're almost certain to find if they're doing something naughty. The issue facing counterintelligence is that there are only so many assets to go around, and so many potential spies. However, with somebody like Katya, who is a high risk, they can spend that effort; it's highly improbable that she could get messages out, and if she could, she wouldn't be wasting that channel on bullshit like this.

And seriously, when we tell the intel weenies "amongst the thousands of base personnel we have worked with in the past few months, one of them is a Soviet spy", they will say "Tell us something we don't know, jackass".

>>27651502
It's pretty clear this jackass is an anti-Katyafag. That, or paranoid and stupid.
>>
>>27651440
And of course, lets not forget:

Failure to figure out on their own the nature of the Strana Mechty base, despite supposedly having their "best man" in the field. Not so fucking good if they don't know shit about what's going on. Sure, send the MC, we got nothing.

What does an inability to find out about top Soviet secrets have to do with ONI's ability to watch a high-risk person on their own turf? These things are called "top secret" for a reason, you know. Just because ONI failed to be omniscient doesn't mean it fails to be basically competent.
>>
>>27651576
Modern intelligence agencies have historically been responsible for gross negligence and have been incompetent.

[x] “Oh for fuck's sake. Hey! Psycho! Yer goin home!”

“Oh for fuck's.... “ You mutter, setting down your pack.

“Perhaps you should let the paratroops handle this?” Ashley says. “After all, it'll be the last chance they get to play with those two.”

You sit there, watching the VDV guys cautiously dismount their vehicles and trail behind the tank at a brisk jog. If Jackie takes note of them, she doesn't seem to care. “Right then!” she yells. “All the way to Berlin lads! Ura!”

Petrov shakes his head. “There is something wrong with that young lady.” He says. “I wondered if she'd suffered a head injury when she was captured, but it the doctors assure me she's perfectly healthy.

“If not entirely sane.” The polish witch says. “I'm anxious to be going home. Well, back to Germany, anyway.” She says, shooting a look at Petrov.

“Who the blue hell is even driving that thing?” You ask, judging your approach and wishing for a good way to knock the tank out without risking injury to the two witches inside.

“Kat, probably.” Ashley says. “She's a natural with anything with an engine.”

“Right.” you say. The paratroops, apparently, are waiting on something.

You, however, don't feel like waiting. Instead, you walk towards the tank, trying your best to not look amused. “Hey! Psycho! Yer goin home! Get out of the damn tank and into the jet already!”

“Not wivout me bloomin tank!” she responds, driving past you.

You sigh.

Thankfully, the VDV guys turn out to be waiting for a chopper. The pilot is damned good- hovering over the deck of the churchill, matching it's stately pace and allowing a trio of witches to rope down onto it's engine deck. A short scuffle later, and the tank is brought to a halt, with a grinning Jackie and Kat presented to Petrov, who just shakes his head.

On a lighter note, I remember us having a short lived voice actress debate for the squadron.

>>
>>27651714
I don't have to make one up when there are thousands of base personnel who could have heard the story, and could be getting slipped a little money by a KGB agent for any rumors they hear.

You, however, have "Intelligence is incompetent!", which you have no proof for other than their inability to discover tightly kept secrets, and "Katya could be a double agent!", for which you have no proof at all.

>>27651762
Admittedly, Konstantina is probably not the most skillful handler of spies, and may be crazy enough to come up with that plan.

“You'll be landing at Aberdeen airport, in Scotland.” Petrov says. “There's already an aircraft waiting to take you back to your fleet.”

“Scotland?” You say, surprised. “What about Iceland?”

He laughs. “Our last lifts were out a few hours after we were. Our troops were never there to fight, but the premier ordered that a corridor be opened into the Atlantic to attack your convoys.” He grins. “It is just a shame that we weren't able to hold it against the overwhelming response, and it is out great fortune that most of the troops were able to be withdrawn safely.”

“You're not coming with?” You ask.

He shakes his head. “No, we don't have the time. We're considering asking the crew to stay there in Scotland for now- we're not sure when the blow will fall, but we think it will be soon, and Vla- Putin and I will need to be available to lead when it does. Keep them from taking berlin, if you can, and do not worry about casualties to the guards. They're the premier's totally and will fight for him regardless.”

You nod. “Thanks for the stay.”

He chuckles. “Thank you for the show. I suspect, however, you only made the situation worse with our friend Konstnantina.”

You shrug, offering a salute that Petrov returns before you board the jet. The witches are already seated, and the chief closes the ramp behind you.

The flight is long, but quiet- the reality of the situation setting in for the witches. You haven't been separated long at all, but they've been MIA or POW for a while, now, and getting to go home is kind of overwhelming, you think.

It's raining in Scotland when the wheels finally thump down on the tarmac hours later. You note a Greyhound parked on the ramp, the insignia marking it as one of the two assigned to the Saratoga. A pair of staff cars wait- each with a single witch and a man in a suit and black shades. They look at you, then at the witches as they disembark.

“I suppose this is goodbye.” Ashley says, giving you a brief hug as you shoulder your bag.

You shrug. “War is weird. We’ll probably see each other again.”

“If you're going to be flying over Germany, count on it.” Kat supplies. “I want back in the fight as soon as they'll let me.”

You shrug. “Where are you all off to, anyway?”

“Edinburgh, then probably Barin or Dunnottar.” She says. “The first for intel, the second so the matrons can talk to us. Hope they don't take too long. The old castles aren't bad, but home is an airfield, you know? Anyway, you're not so bad for a squid. Take of yourself smalltime.”

She takes charge of the other witches, leading them to the staff cars and conversing, briefly, with the person in charge- one of the witches, you think. You hope that will all go alright, but either way, it's out of your hands.

The loadmaster on the greyhound doesn't salute as you walk up to the plane, instead looking you up and down and grunting. “Ready to go, sir?” he asks, casually. You nod.

“It's a short hop to the sara, the task force is south east of Iceland. Couple hours, we're loaded up already, you were our last item.” He says, directing you to stow your bag. The greyhound is configured for a mixed haul- a few passenger seats, most of them empty, and some cargo, strapped down tightly against the attachment points in the deck.

“Some of that's from china lake for you and those girls.” He says, conversationally. “Don't know what's in it, didn't ask. Anyway, sir, just sit back and take it easy, we'll be back on deck soon enough.”

He isn't lying. You've only just barely gone to sleep when you're jolted awake by a carrier landing- noting that the turboprops of the greyhound sound completely different from the roar of your jets on a landing.

You're greeted on deck by Brigette and Ice.

“Ah, de baron hisself do be returnin' from is trip, do he?” Brigette says, stifling a laugh and turning to look at Ice. “I'll be 'handlin our kit, you deal wit him, deal?”

Ice looks over at her. “I guess, since you asked so nicely.”

“Merci.” Brigette says, laughingly.

“Come on, Frank.” Ice says, as soon as you get closer. “The ONI guys want to talk to you, and Merlin's going to be anxious to see you.”

[x] Alright, I've got some stuff to offload on the spooks.

You nod. “Alright, I've got some stuff to offload on the spooks anyway.”

She looks over at you, closing the hatch to the island behind her. “Stuff?”

“Intel on a big push on Berlin.” You say. “Putin seemed to believe that it was going to happen within days, if not hours.”

“How do you know you can trust that?” Ice says. “what if he's trying to throw us off balance?”

“That's not really the impression I got.” You say, shaking your head. “And he sent four witches home with me. They're probably in Edinburgh right now or- oh hell. One of those two castles, uh, Barin and Dun-something.”

“Dunnottar.” Ice says. “Traditional Scottish witch holding.”

“That's it.” You say, opening the hatch to the briefing room and nodding to the spooks there.

“Commander Bishop.” One of them says, nodding. “How was the trip?”

“Good.” You return, handing them the file folders- noting that the papers are held in place by a pin through the top corner, instead of a paperclip. Seems kind of odd. “That's the information on Lazarus he'd release. From what I saw, it was.. well, some star trek shit. Bionics, augmentation. That sort of thing.”

“What else?” The agent asks, leafing through the papers quickly.

“This.” You say, reaching over to tap the other folder. “That's plans for their invasion of Berlin. Units, strengths, corridors, artillery, witch and aircraft tasking, bases, everything.”

The agent's eyes practically bug out. “This is- we'll have to verify it but if this is legitimate....”

He trails off.

You nod. “Yeah, I think it is.”

The two agents look at each other, then at you. “What else was there?” The witch asks.

You shrug. “Their op into Iceland was a fake. Putin is convinced the world is going to need every single witch it can get it's hands on for a renewed martian invasion. He snatched up a pile of disabled ones- blind, deaf, that kind of thing. I met a few of them, didn't talk to them though. My escort claimed their sight or hearing or whatever had been completely restored. That polish witch was at least a quarter rebuilt there, and Ashley LaCroix or whatever, the Canadian? She had a new lung and half a torso thanks to them.”

“So it's not some sort of breeding camp?” The agent asks. You stare at him blankly.

“It's not a what?” You ask, put off by the sheer insanity of the statement. “Hell no it's not. They're Healing people there, not... that. Fuck. What kind of sick mind thought that up anyway?”

The agent shrugs. “We're paid to investigate any possibility. That one seemed likely.”

“Well, from what I saw, it isn't. You'd have to ask the witches for sure, but I damn sure didn't get that impression.” You say, kind of angry. Breeding camp? Really? That's sick and twisted on so many levels you don't want to deal with it. These guys aren't supervillans, you think, they're human too.

“Listen. We're going to need time to go through all this.” The male agent says again. “And we'll need to verify it, but for the time being, we're done here. “

“Good.” You respond, not wanting to deal with this guy anymore. “I have squadronmates to see.”

i guess the Russians didn't make breeding camps due to the result of the randomness of witch power. just because you birth them, does not mean they will become a witch. maybe they have not found a genetic trigger or something that make a girl become a witch.

"Frank's she's practically on top of us! We're gonna hit!" Merlin cries out. Her voice almost stops your heart. It's the voice of someone who is afraid to die. It's the voice of someone who is afraid to watch YOU die.

The Wyvern buffets slightly.

"Um..." Katya offers. "I...I don't have a shot, Frank." She pulls away, but you SWEAR you hear laughter.

"MY LOVE HAS COME BACK TO ME!" Stalinka howls in triumph and ecstasy, having managed to work her way onto the starboard wing of the Wyvern, rubbing against it suggestively.

"UM." is all you can say.

[x] “Let's go find Merlin, boss.”

“Alright, now that that's done, let's go find Merlin.” You say, closing the hatch behind you. “She been Ok?”

Ice nods. “A bit mopey, but we all kind of expected that. She's probably down on the hangar deck, she's been spending a lot of time in your jet the last couple days.”

You nod. “Makes sense. Didn't she do the-”

“Same thing in Alaska. Yes. Can we not talk about that?” Ice says, cutting you off. “This isn't as bad as that, she's working and getting along. Just mopey.”

You head down to the hangar deck almost on autopilot- you're not tired by any stretch of the imagination, but you're beat regardless, with all the traveling you've been doing.

Down on the hangar deck, your crew is working on the jet, while your chief is standing up by the cockpit. Merlin's seat is retracted down into the jet, though her hatch isn't closed, and they seem to be going over some basic systems work.

You weave in between the parked jets, walking you the access ladder to the back of your fighter. Your chief sees you and nods. “Good to see you, sir, how was the trip?”

“Cold, John. Cold. Otherwise, not bad. How's the jet?” You ask, returning his salute then shaking his hand.

He nods. “Good, good. Lieutenant Wells has been really helping us out a lot, she's a damn prodigy with these things. Told her she ougghta go into business for someone when she gets out, she'd make money hand over fist.”

You laugh. “She know I'm here?”

He shrugs, then casts a look over his shoulder. “Hey Samantha! Commander Bishop's up here!”

“H-He is?!” Merlin exclaims, and you hear some muted thrashing. “H-hang on, don't let him go anywhere!”

Her seat's about half raised when she jumps up off of it and slams into your midriff, her face buried in your stomach. You laugh, returning her hug. “Glad to see you too, kiddo.” You say. “How have you been? Where's the rest of your flight suit?”

She peels back from you and blushes furiously- unlike most witches, she's not used to walking around bareleg. “I-In the jet. Let me get them- don't go anywhere!” She stammers, sitting down and retracting her seat- and closing the hatch. You chuckle. It's good to be home.

"So are you," he answer.

There's an awkward silence as Slider stares at Frank, studying him.

"Um."

"I'm trying to picture you with a whip. And vampire teeth."

"UM."

"YOUR FACE~" Slider cackles. "Please never change Frank Bishop."

"Hohkeh Lucy, 'splain."

"Ice has been reading this." She holds up a paperback novel, it's gotta be no more than 300 pages thick. On the cover is what appears to be Fabio, on a beach at night, wearing only form fitting pants and a crown of thorns. His mouth parted enough to see fangs crudely drawn in by the cover artist. There is a whip in one hand, and a woman posing in full sexual (but still clothed) submission in the other.

"You look nothing like this man."

"N-no shit."

"Someone doesn't caaaaaaaaare~"

"Awww really? Really yer gonna do her like that?"

Frank has turned a sheet on the couch into a makeshift whip, pantomiming the scene and whipping at the air uselessly. It's all the two can to to not laugh loud enough to wake up the rest of the squadron. In the background, a history documentary about Vietnam drones on. It's interesting accompaniment.

"You simply existing is enough for that, you can't help it." Nervously, Slider looks around the room, searching for witnesses, before hugging Frank, tighter than she ever has. "Don't get used to this. I missed you a lot."

"Sorry." Frank says again, returning the hug. Slider shrugs away from him after a moment, looking away and taking a deep breath before muttering something under her breath.

"Huh?"

"...like ya th get used to..."

"Huh?"

"I don't have to tell you...but you'd better not let anything bad happen to you again, Frank. Tomaso. Or John. Or Ricardo. Or whatever that special someone wants you to be at that moment." Frank opens his mouth to reply, but Slider shuts him up with a finger on his lips. "I know you can't promise it. I don't...wanna make you do something you can't or don't want to do."

"I know."

"But make an effort." She turns back to face him, and smiles happily. "Ya get me, asshole?"

"I get you."

"Alright." She steps back, half turns to leave, and lingers for a moment. "Good night, Frank."

It's very warm in the room all of the sudden.

"Good night, Rachel."

"Ohhhh Fraaaaaaaank..." Tabitha moans in her sleep, just as Slider enters the room. Quietly so as not to disturb her friend. The booklight Ice was using is still on, lighting up her face. Drying tears can be seen on her cheeks. "Please...don't leave us again..."
