Yes, it's another Kingdoms of the Zodiac thread! Because somehow, I still haven't lost all hope for this setting!

Premise: "You know how each nation in the Avatarverse has a culture based on the symbolic properties of a certain element? Their food, architecture, customs, clothing, fighting styles - they all fit together within a certain aesthetic revolving around it.

What if we had a setting with 12 kingdoms, each based on the symbolic properties of one of the signs of the Greek zodiac?"

Incoming: summarized descriptions of all the nations from the last two threads.

A federation of warring clans (known collectively as "The Ramhost of Aries") who have made the misty forests and mountainsides of the western continent their home, the Aries are a savage, passionate people. The will and the right of the Horned King, who maintains a tenuous hold over the various clan elders, is the only thing usually standing between them and all out war amongst themselves or against the other nations. They make superb warriors, but poor soldiers, as their focus on personal honor and battle spirit blinds them to the needs of the army as a whole. They paint themselves with woad and wield large iron swords and bows in battle, and are easily recognized by their extremely decorated helmets, most of which are, of course, horned. To earn one's helmet is considered a man's and a warrior's right of passage.

Culturally very Gaulish/Celtic. Ethnically same as all the sheeple.

Ethnically almost identical to the Aries, but very different culturally, the people of the Capricorn nation inhabit the frozen ice caps and ever-dark wasteland and the far north of the continent, where it connects in places with the Eastern ones (explaining, according to some, their similar racial and cultural proximity to the Sheep nation people, with which they occasionally trade). Under the cover of cold, endless nights, the Capricorn have evolved a mysterious and bloody culture which is as alien to most westerners as it is terrifying. Primitive but ingenious, they have mastered the black seas of the north, where they set sail in cunningly designed boats to fish, whale, and hunt for seals and sealions. Like the Aries, they revere the wilder aspects of nature, but their grim lifestyle has led them to develop a darker worldview: wheres the Aries celebrate fertility, Capricorn rituals revolve around death and the cycle of death, and involve sacrifice and pain. They are known for their eerily cold, calculating demeanors.

Culturally mythical Finland/Inuit/a little bit Norse. Ethnically sheeple.

A nation spanning two continents (they are known as the Horse nation in the east), the Sagittarius folk are, true to their name, people of the horse. Nomads by heart with very few permanent settlements, they ride across plains and steppes, following their whims and the call of their tribal elders and spirit-men, living off hunting game and gathering (as well as what they can trade from their surrounding nations). A peaceful folk, they are renowned as philosophers, artists and storytellers, but also as criminals, bandits, and occasionally, marauding invasion hordes - their mastery of horseback archery has made them terrifying rivals for most to face. As their nation is the most widespread, different clans may have wildly different customs or even racial traits, making it hard, if not impossible, to go into much detail about theirs in all but the most superficial of fashions.

Gypsies, I guess?

Yet another nation with roots in the east (where they are called Ox), the dark-skinned, alluring Taurus people are a contradictory one indeed: on the one hand, they are known as a highly industrial folk, hard working and tenacious, traits they have used in order to carve for themselves kingdoms throughout the world famous for their solidly yet artistically built cities and vast agricultural regions. Rather mistrustful of wilder applications of magic, they have instead mastered the creation of magical crafts and items, which they make use of on a daily basis on nearly all levels of their society. At the same time, they are also a sensual, decadent people, fond of comfort and luxury, and their nobility enjoys a standard of living matched by few worldwide - and desired by fewer still.
The Ox nation of the east, while similar, is more low-key: they are workers and farmers, but do not share the Taurus nation's obsession with carnal pleasure.

Ethnically, they were described as "Middle-Eastern Dwarfs, Except Large". Culturally would probably have a Mesopotamian style.

Possessing, at the moment, the largest territory in the world, the Virgo nation is an unexpectedly pacifistic one - but that doesn't mean that they are nice people. Their society is extremely well ordered with a rigid caste system and a sprawling bureaucracy (a necessity in order to manage such vast lands as their own efficiently) spanning everything from village elders to the rulers themselves. They are a matriarchy. Their lands are wet and relatively flat, and are considered some of the most fertile in the world, crisscrossed by rivers and dotted with great lakes and forests. They are merchants and diplomats, running their kingdom by cunning into their vast riches, but make no mistakes: their armies, simply by the fact of their existence as they are, are absolutely massive and a force to be reckoned with (even if they are not as technologically advanced, well-trained or fierce as some others)

Not much information about the cultural and racial aesthetics. Hellenic?

The people of the moon, and the only one more feared, perhaps, than the Capricorn, the Cancer people are the second great matriarchy of the west. Known as the kingdom of witches and the abode of hags, it is the only one where magic is not only so commonplace as to be practiced officially by all, but as to form the rulership of the nation itself. Unfortunately, the Cancer's is a dark and foul brand of magic, mostly dealing with death, curses and poison. The ladies of the Cancer nation keep themselves immortal via the blackest of sorcery and their armies are composed largely of undead minions, keeping their dominions extremely stable over the centuries. They are highly isolotionist, partly because nobody wants anything to do with them and partly because the ladies know that if the peasantry had reason to suspect that the outside world might have anything to offer them except for monsters and danger they'll all leave en-mass.

No idea about cultural aesthetic, again. Probably Gothic? Or some weird fusion - Gothic Minoan, maybe? Weren't those obsessed with death?

An empire forever in tumult, which is exactly how they like it, the people of the Leo nation are before anything else *grand*. Everything about them has to be - from their architecture to their armies to their leaders themselves - epic, incredible and awful. While their magic is otherwise so weak as to be nearly nonexistent, for some unknown reason once every few centuries the Leo nation has been known to produce singular mages of nigh godlike power, and has historically always expanded and was diminished following the courses of their lives. This dependence on the heroics of ones have made the Leo people obsessed with personal glory and achievement, which is, ironically, the reason for their empire's permanent state of half-crumbling: nobody wants to work together and share the fame.

Cultural aesthetic is a combination of Roman and Ethiopian. Ethnically they look like sub-Saharan Africans, except hairier and the men have epic decorated beards and manes. The women go bald.

A scholarly, dispassionate people from the archipelagos of the west (which they share begrudgingly with the Pisces nation), the Gemini academicians are the widely known as the brightest and most excellent in the world, studying both magic and science. So as to not have to spend anymore effort than is necessary on lowly manual tasks that might inhibit their learning, the Gemini people have created a race of humanoid magical constructs known as "Twins" to do it for them. By today, Twins actually outnumber humans in the Gemini lands by a significant measure and even moreso near the capitol. Despite their otherwise cerebral bent, they are avid fans of wrestling, believing that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body (or, more often, at least a beautiful one).

Once and again, no idea about their aesthetics.

Least human of the western nations, the Pisces people literally possess traces of the blood of an ancient aquatic civilization in their veins, giving them ethereal appearances that become increasingly colder, slimier and more monstrous as they grow older. They rule the islands of the west, where they have created vast maritime empires based on cutthroat (sometimes literally) trade and slavemongering. Their magic is powerful, but very unusual, and much of it is derived from the study and analysis of artifacts left behind by their fishlike ancestors.

Culturally and ethnically they look deliberately alien. Some weird Mesoarmerican Mediterranean African whathaveyou. With fish people.

Residing right at the crossroads of the world, the Libra people have maintained impartial neutrality in nearly all things diplomatic for longer than anyone can remember. Anyone and everyone is welcome in the cities and towns of the Libraic League, and anyone judged as mercilessly should they defy the rules of the people. The Libra are an exacting, efficient folk with a stiff upper lip, merchants and businessman before they are anything else, and their trade caravans and ships engulf Zodiac. While they do not, strictly speaking, possess armies of their own, they are considered mercenaries without peer (due to the combination of extreme discipline, loyalty and greed) and several knightly orders exist in their culture purely to zealously chase debtors, contract breakers and other financial criminals.

No idea about an aesthetic. Indians? Right between east and west and possess vast riches, after all.

A small, peaceful nation that has been a thorn in the side of the Leo for centuries (not because they attack the Leo, but because no matter how many times the lions attempt to purge them off the face of the Earth or make them submit, they always seem to survive and emerge elsewhere), composed almost entirely of mages specializing in healing in divination (which might go a long way towards explaining why they're nearly impossible to put down.) They believe in peace, serenity and wholeness as the most important values to live by and most are zealous vegetarians. Leo sage-masters and astrologists have foreseen the birth of a mage of unprecedented power somewhere among the Aquarius nation during the coming century, and are throwing an epic (of course) bitchfit about it.

They're basically air nomads, nobody has any delusions about that. And the Leo are the fire nation, very clever.
>>
There was far less information about the Chinese zodiac, except for the Sheep, that seemed to have a fanboy. Will arrive in the next post because even though there's little of it, summarizing all of them is still a tad bit too long for one post.
>>
>Dragon: rulers of a vast and glorious empire, cunning and intelligent. Sort of like the Leo but less melodramatic.
>Tiger: enemies of Dragon. They are the eastern Leo, larger than life adventurers, swashbucklers and heroes, or so they'd like to think. They also rule a great empire, but like the one of Leo, it's crumbling from within because the nobles are all too busy being awesome to run their lands.
>Ox: Ethnically related to the Taurus, and culturally similar, but without the decadence. More or less dwarfs except physically large and middle-eastern.
>Snake: migrated from the west when the other nations there rose up against the thousands of years ago, back when they ruled almost the whole continent. Now they are almost an "organization" more than they are a proper nation, a sort of eastern Illuminati that manipulates other nations behind the scenes into achieving mysterious goals. Toxic shadow ninjas.
>Rat: eastern zorros and heroes of the people, vowed enemies of Snake. They are heroic Naruto ninjas, apparently.
>Pig: farmers and merchants, the most populous race/culture in the eastern continent and possibly the world. Jolly and good natured, but deceptively smart and can be vicious when needed. They make up the citizenry of the Dragon and Tiger empires, alongside Dogs.
>Dogs: Apparently gypsies? I don't know. Didn't really get it, admittedly.
>Rabbits: hobbits.
>Monkeys: the Aquarius of the east. Peaceful healers and philosophers, but with a more technological/scientific bent. Possess a sizable kingdom based on ancient Thailand, where everyone is always on drugs all the time.
>Roosters: Also didn't hear much about them.
>Sheep: a hardy yet friendly folk of herders and sometimes farmers living in the far north. Mostly keep to themselves, but valued for their mystical knowledge. Posses a (not unfounded, but much exaggerated) reputation for being enormous sexual traits and having huge sexual appetites, both men and women.

The folk of the sheep dwell on the cold, moist plains of the Eastern continent. Largely a nomadic people, they move along the plains with their herds always on the lookout for new pastures and away from enemies and predators (they aren't pacifists, but they are not a warrior people either), accompanied by a few loyal dogs. Only very few of them live in villages scattered across the taiga, and then, those are tiny and many of the residents don't stay year long.

The sheep is at the center of their lifestyles. A man's wealth is measured by the size of their herd. Sheep are power, life and riches. As the environment is quite cold, heavy coats, jackets, dresses and hats (with flaps over the years) of wool and sheepskin abound, and the nomads sleep in sheepskin tents. They burn sheep dung for fuel, make jewels of the bones and much of their diet is based on meat and milk of sheep (alongside a few vegetables and grains grown by the village-folks and the occasional game bird).

They are friendly, laid back folks, wary of strangers but loyal to family, fond of philosophy, dance and music (primarily pipes and wind instruments). They are known to be wise in the herbal and medicinal arts.

Although a stereotype abounds that sheep nation people are enormously well-endowed and very lustful, and although those are not entirely without basis, the truth, of course, is far less dramatic: as with all stereotypes, they merely represent vague tendencies and so it is entirely possible to find sheep nation women who are flat and frigid or men who are feminine and melancholy. They are fair skinned and haired, and tend towards curly hair. They have a lot on their body, and they rarely trim it. (again, it's important to realize that these are real people, not animal folks - "hairy" doesn't mean "furred" or "woolen" - it just means "on average, has more body hair then the folk at home might consider sightly").

Culturally seem to be a bit like Russian/Tibetan nomads?

Scorpios are fiercely independent. They are able to accomplish anything they put their mind to and they won't give up. They are perfectly suited to being on their own. They are not social butterflies like some other zodiac signs and some actually prefer to live on their own that way there is never any issue of who controls what at home, they like to be in control.

From what I'm reading, they sound like an excellent nation from which to have great Genghis Khanny or perhaps Kamehameha characters constantly popping out. Polynesian/Songhai pirates? Also, the feeling of 'the scorpion would rather kill itself than be killed' gives them a bushido thing?

Annnnnnnd that's all there was. An anon in the first thread said he was already working on making this into a game, but it's doubtful that he still is, especially given that he said on the second that he still doesn't have enough information. Might I repeat a suggestion from the final part of the second thread:

"
The original idea of the last thread was to jot down the details, though, considering how the symbolism of each sign would influence them. What about doing it in a character sheet like fashion, starting with basic terms? Something like:

>Architecture:
>Fashion:
>Diet/Cuisine:
>Spirituality:
>Entertainment/Art:
>Industry:
>Warfare:
>Prominent Customs:
>Race/Ethnicity:
>Magic:

Then we make one like that for each nation. That would be a good start, wouldn't it?"
>>

>>
>>27623528
Where did this "huge dick/great lay" stuff come from?

>>
>>27623559

In the first thread, someone first made a joke about how they'd be a nation of moe (because the traits of sheep include shyness, kindness and so on), to which someone replied like "yeah, and they'll all have huge tits/cocks and hide extremely horny natures".

The guy who made the race description rolled with it and made it (stepped back to a realistic level) both a part of their race and (equally exaggerated) a sort of reputation they have. I guess it'd be somewhat like Brazilians in real life? ("known" to be extremely horny and sexual, "all the women have like F cups man"/"all the guys have like 20 cm dicks man", it's obviously not right but there is SOME truth to it).

Except with extremely pale skin, light blonde/light brown to white hair, very pale eyes and a lot of body hair.

Someone mentioned they shave all their body hair on the night of their wedding but that might've been a joke.

As was pointed out, the stereotype is GROUNDED in something that might be true (it's perfectly reasonable that an ethnic group might be inclined to have large breasts/large cocks. It doesn't mean all the women look like boobpedia articles, but that maybe the average size is C instead of B or what have you), but highly exaggerated and possibly considered offensive.
>"Check out that gal, I bet she's got Sheep blood in her"
>College kids going on a trip to Sheep nation territory believing that as soon as they enter a village their cocks would be swarmed with hungry, buxom ladies

I will not let sexy sheep overtake this thread. It is time to get shit done.

Aries Nation:

>Architecture:
Aries are a lot better at demolishing architecture than they are at building it. When they do build it, they tend to use materials that can be gathered from the immediate environment (not out of any sort of sentimentality so much as for a lack of industrial capability) and build simply, but effectively. Most homes are made of wood and mud, with thatched roofs and sometimes a stone foundation. Most buildings are not decorated, although the houses of the nobility may have rough, stylized statues carved into the walls. Decorations of horns and antlers are very common. Living rooms are built around fireplaces and heat retention is important - the Aries may not live in the frozen wasteland like their brethren, but they do live pretty far up north. Villages are relatively small, and hill forts are built in strategic positions.

>Fashion:
Aries nation people put a great value on beauty, but a greater on practicality. Most of them dress utilitarianly, with simple coats of animals skins or wool (usually dyed) and occasionally cloaks and hats of fur. Richer members of the community may dye their skins, and metallic jewellery (of bronze, silver and gold) is both common and loved, mostly tiaras and armbands. Skin dying is very common among the Aries, especially shades of red, blue and dark green, and warriors wear tattoos proudly. They rarely wear armor for war, but all warriors wear fabulous helmets, most of them horned.

How is it so far? Somebody wants to take over or should I continue to diet?
>>

>>
>>27624193
I am. I was really gregarious and outgoing when I was a little kid but I got embarrassed a lot and it got to me.
>>
>>27624154

>Diet/Cuisine
While the Aries nation keeps large herds of hardy sheep for milk and meat, most of their food still comes from the forest depths. Game meat (both large and small) is eaten even by commoners (usually hunted by them), often cooked with mushrooms or fruit sauces, roasted over a fire or in a simmering stew. Fishing is practiced in small scales during the right seasons, although the Aries aren't ship builders. In terms of fruit and vegetables, Aries women often forage for berries, herbs and mushrooms in the woods and where the ground is cleared (such as around the largest villages and forts) crops are raised, primarily turnips. Bee honey and fruit syrup are commonly used as sweeteners. Aries alcohol is notoriously awful, but they seem to like it.

>Spirituality:
Did we ever decide anything on the cosmology of the setting? I mean the rest of the theme screams "druidism" but what is it about, really? I'm guessing stone circles, child sacrifices and star worship but you wouldn't know.

This thread seems kind of slow. Is someone up for starting a quest so we can get the word out?
>>
>>27625145
No, because people (nobility less so, but most people) back in the old days usually just ate staple crops garnished with whatever they could find. But more importantly, the more "categories" you have on a fluffy character sheet, the more detail-diluted it becomes.

Also, thanks for reminding me, architecture can probably go to.
>>
>>27625180
Yeeeah. Back in the old days everyone ate the same, wore the same, lived in the same places and had the same profession. By in the old days do you mean back hunted the steppe? Because it was my impression we had gone for a later point in time. You might as well drop spirituality because it was all war and fertility gods and animal things anyway. Or drop entertainment, we used to throw stones at animals and hit sticks on stones to make funny sounds.

I'm all in favor. It's a setting, the options are practically limitless.

>Aries Warrior Quest
>Capricorn Whaler Quest
>Sagittarius Nomad Quest
>Taurus Plutarch Quest
>Virgo Diplomat Quest
>Cancer Witch Quest Implying this wouldn't be chosen instantly
>Leo Warlord Quest
>Gemini Twin-Crafter Quest
>Pisces Archeologist Quest
>Libra Merchant Quest (with a little girl Dog nation companion?)
>Scorpio Corsair Quest
>Aquarius Messiah Quest
>Sheep Waifu Quest. Implying this wouldn't be chosen INSTANTLY BY EVERYONE. Probably a lesbian waifu, too. Hairy, fuzzy, snuggly lesbian waifu who cooks everything with disgusting sheep milk

That shit isn't all going on the character sheets, you 'tard. It's for setting flavor.

Personally, I'm going to try and make a homebrew of this game for Dungeon World. Replace race with nation. I think it could be pretty boss.

It is very similar, but more pared down.

I'm the guy from the first thread who suggested moe sheeps be well-hung/have big tits.

I regret ever doing that. Have a moe shota/loli sheep quest if you want, but don't attach it to a setting that has this much promise.
>>
>>27625324

But it's the small things like diet and architecture that actually make an anthropological study (or simulation thereof) interesting. The stuff you gave is very bare. It might do for running, say, a board game about the setting, but not to give it life.

Well, I'm the one who wrote the detailed race description. I honestly thought it'd be a funny detail to add (it's one of those things that people never consider, but are surprisingly realistic when you get down to think about them - one ethnic group having a sexual "reputation". Many do in real life, and it's usually so exaggerated that when it comes up in interacting with them the results are usually funny). I didn't think people will obsess so much over it, though.

Maori Barbary corsairs. We may have created something unpleasant.

Maybe we should throw some Zulu in there as well.

>>
>>27625399

Confirmed for being geographically close to the Leo nation?

>>27625422

I don't think so. I mean, with utmost humility, I think most of my description still stands pretty well in terms of describing a fictional culture in 1500 letters or less. It's just one little detail about them - and I could go on more. I could talk about their warfare practices, their magic, diet. I think we're doing an injustice to a culture to look at it through a single window like that (especially that window). Does Brazil have nothing to offer to the world other than "Big Asses"?
>>
>>27625352
I disagree, but I do know the feeling you have when you say that. Just know that there will come a point where the writers are TRYING to create differences where there are none, and this degrades the setting immensely.

For example, I would imagine Leo and Taurus architecture to be very similar to each other. The author, in an attempt to avoid this problem, the author will have to create a difference which was outside his/her original inspiration for the cultures. Now he/she may come up with a really original and unique idea, but can we really expect them to fill all those "architecture" and "cuisine" categories with interesting things? That, dear anon, is what really sucks the life out of a polycultural setting.

That is why we have the "notes on culture" space. It does not create a requirement for good ideas, but instead gives the author a place to put them down if he has them. I hope that clears things up.

>Does Brazil have nothing to offer to the world other than "Big Asses"?

That's the kind of damaging cultural stigma that I think cheapens the whole discussion, particularly since most of those rumors are propagated mainly by the culture they're attributed to, which just results in further stereotyping and higher and higher expectations, until we get to the comically personified attributes that are physically impossible to live up to, pic related.
>>
>>27625453

I don't think at all that they have to be all unique. I'd imagine geographically or culturally related nations would have many similarities between them (besides, Mesopotamian and ancient Ethiopian architecture being similar? Lolwat? The similarities basically end with "pyramidal structures" and "stone"), but if that's the case, just don't write down much, or copy parts. Or mention the similarities. Same for fashion, architecture, whatever.

I don't know about others, but I don't feel a need to "create differences where there are none" when I write cultures. If I think there would be I add them, if not I make a point of there not be. It suggests at trade relations, shared history, etc.

For example, maybe Taurus nation nobles drink sweet coffee imported from the Leo lands? It would explain why they share the taste for it.

>>
>>27625542

But that's precisely the point. That's how those things work in real life. I didn't mean ACTUALLY making all sheep nation people hilariously hung. I meant that they MAY be, on average, maybe a little larger but it's OTHER PEOPLE (or maybe some Sheep themselves? They seem a bit too isolationist to really do that) who spread that idea. Again, it's a bit of information that is useless by itself but makes the world feel more lived in and real.

I mean, I guess you could ignore it or retcon it but I honestly don't see anything bad about it, assuming your players possess enough maturity to not go "hararar big boobs" at it.
>>
>>27625611
I guess. I just feel that even introducing it has diverted too much attention away from the rest of the setting.
>>
>>27625550
Fine, I concede my point. But this is going to get real hoaky real fast if the writers aren't careful. And this setting has a whole mess of potential.
>>
>>27625611
All it's going to do is make people ask "Well what about MY zodiac culture?"

And we don't want to turn a setting about awesome Maori Barbary pirates and Magitech-Hellenic Leagues into literal dick measuring contests, do we?
>>
>>27625611

Actually, thinking about it, creating a list of stereotypes pertaining to each nation/race might not even be such a bad idea. As we mentioned already, people's views of other cultures in real life is often heavily colored by stereotypes and stigmas. I point that out way back in my first description.

The "average Joe" "knows" that "All those Sheep nation women are busty waifus", just as much as the average American joe might imagine that all Ukrainian women are. The reality, of course, is so different that an actual Sheep nation person would probably find the idea offensive.

Or the idea that "All Leo nation people are noble warriors", supposedly a "positive" stereotype. Do you really think their entire society is made of warrior kings? There are Leo nation farmers, bakers, tinkers, gardeners. There are pacifists and cowards, scholars and healers. No culture is a big mass like that.

>>27625674

That's because some people on /tg/ don't posses the aforementioned level of maturity. Don't let them get to you. It's one little detail in a whole potential book of them and there's no reason to refer to it again in describing the various nations (unless it actually comes - are Sheep nation people considered desirable as prostitutes, for example? What if, like poor Asian or East European women in real life, young Sheep nation girls are often kidnapped or tricked into effective slavery because some people have a fetish for them? Again, that's just using the single detail you said would do nothing but disrupt things) The fact that the detail itself might be sexual in nature doesn't mean it's plot/worldbuilding application has to be immature or distracting)

Are all nations totally human, or is this setting going to give the people features tied to their sign?

ie: do Leo men have their hair like manes? Do Taureans have horns? Are Geminis always born as twins?
>>
>>27625798
No real consensus on that.

Pisces are apparently mermaids, but I'm not digging that honestly.

Not if its primary idea contributors are arguing the length of Sheep dicks and whether or not we should talk about the varied national cuisines.
>>

I'd rather they were fully human, but with perhaps webbed digits and gills.
>>
>>27625798

My impression was that other than the Pisces being related to Deep Ones, everyone is human, although some nations may have ethnic features resembling their namesake. So Leo nation people do have a lot of hair, Virgo nation people look effeminate, Taurus nation people are stocky and Sheep/Aries/Capricorn people are really hairy (could we please stop talking about those for a second?), but nobody has fur or horns or anything like that.

>it's important to realize that these are real people, not animal folks - "hairy" doesn't mean "furred" or "woolen" - it just means "on average, has more body hair then the folk at home might consider sightly"

Well, I was the OP of the first thread. Things like the cuisine were actually what I was really interested at in the first place, other things just spread out from there. And like I explained before in great length, I have no problem with SHEEP DICKS so long as people don't make such a scene of them. Why does nobody make a scene of the fact Leo nation people are black? Or that Capricorn nation people hunt whales? It's the exact same thing, there was never a reason to draw it into a two thread discussion.

For cancer aesthethics, I would give them a mix of minoan and mayan architecture. The richer parts of the city would be mostly giant stone ziggurats while the poorer areas of the city could be large minoan buildings designed for communal living. They would all live in great autonomous walled city each lead by a matron. The nation itself would be controlled by the council of all matron witches.

I imagine the living witches would shave their head and apply chalk to their skin to look like undeads. Tattoo and piercings should be frequent among witches. Most witches should wear elegant but simple ample clothes, usually in dark colors. Commoner men and women would probably wear drab clothing and generally look unhealthy and unhappy. They could be ethically related to the Aquarius people.

I'm going to keep insisting that the mention of Sheeple being well-endowed is kept in the setting, out of sheer principle. I refuse to believe that /tg/ as a whole is really so immature as to not be able to handle any mention of sexuality at all, however inconsequential. I think it's a bunch of people who are already immature and that you're basing your idea off their reactions to this.

I say we keep it in, as it is (a single sentence at the end of the description of the Sheep nation ethnicity), and you will all see that when people read it, NOBODY makes a fuss about it. They'll gloss over it like any other detail.

I'm willing to bet on that.

I don't see why we're trying to do this. If we're going to insert fantasy races into the setting, we should go all out.

Plus, remember that in traditional fantasy, they are referred to as "races" rather than "species". This could be a key element of the setting. Race in this world could be wholly dependent on where you are born, rather than who you are born to.

Geez, I was so angry at the strawmanning I didn't even notice the other half of your post was just as bad, although in a different way. The fact that everyone is human is a POINT. These are ethnic groups, not different races (with the exception of the Pisces, who appear to have very subtle traces of something inhuman in them). Are there nonhuman races in the setting? I don't know, but these aren't them. And why add the animal features? Because the basic idea of this all was an "Avatar" like situation in which a certain concept (Zodiac signs, in this case) affects the cultural, racial and visual aesthetic of a society. Imagine that this is a cartoon series, for the lack of a better equivalent - wouldn't you say that it's appropriate, at least in those cases where you can make it happen without it being completely silly?

Do you fucking know what the term "race" means? It isn't the same thing as "species". Races interbreed, they are of the same functional "genetic" type (for as much as the term "genetics" matters within a fantasy setting).

I don't see why you're getting so Euphoric about animal traits being added to the races.
>>
What are gender roles like in each of the nations?

How are people's signs dictated? Same as in IRL earth? You'll need to address issues of racism as people are born into nations apparently controlled by select groups.

Or you need a highly mobile world where people can leave all their roots and group up.

Birthsign is the same as in real life, but it doesn't dictate which nation you live in.

I believe it was agreed that your birthsign should affect your affinity for your nation's magical tradition and how you are perceived.
>>
>>27626320
>>27626389
One thing that might be interesting is if the people in a given nation are only fertile, and therefore only give birth, at times of the year aligned with their zodiac sign.

In other words, all Taurean kids are born in late April/early May, and all Gemini are born the month after that.

Alternatively, the magic of the setting simply makes it so that births sync up with the proper astrological period, regardless of when pregnancy starts.
>>
>>27626389
>but it doesn't dictate which nation you live in.
Right, so you have to explain that because the nations are apparently orientated by birthsign and controlled by individuals of a birthsign. And birthsign apparently has real, significant effects on your personality.

So every nation has a two-tier society at a minimum.

Plus, everyone of a given birthsign and thus the chosen representatives of a specific culture are born within a very short period of time as each other. Does birth control exist in the setting? Most of your cultures will be aiming to get pregnant at specific times.
>>
>>27626336
I hope you learn from this to stop being such an entitled brat about something that apparently is absolutely inconsequential. Speaking of it I were to read about the enormous genitals or breasts of a race in any setting guide I'd put the book down for good as I have been warned.

Well, the zodiac could be linked to fertility, but maybe not in such an absolute way.

How about, people are simply much more fertile during the time period aligned with their zodiac sign. People born to the opposite sign of their people could carry a special significance.

I guess being born with the right sign would be crucial for nobles and royalty.

>>27626442

Allied signs (lots of people)
Others (most people)

Since there is all this buttmad about animal traits, why not let the setting have shifters?

In other words, the magic of the setting, much as the magic in Avatar was element-based sorcery, is shapeshifting into your linked zodiac forms.

Much like in Avatar, some people can have talents for it while others cannot. OOH! How about we base how much a specific person can shapeshift on how close they are born on their zodiac month? A Pisces born in February can become a full mermaid, while one born in April can only get scales or gills, and one born in August is basically just human.
>>
>>27626674
In REIGN, you can roll to attune yourself to a certain magical school. Attunement has permanent benefits in casting magic based in that school, and also affects how your character looks depending on how well the ritual goes.

Perfectly attuned Stormcallers, for example, are basically the fucking Dovakin and can shout hurricanes into beings. Imperfectly attuned Stormcallers, though still powerful, cannot attain the greater heights of their peers.

I like this mechanic as it really fits with the zodiac, lunar/solar alignment type of thing.
>>
>>27626365

The point was that it proves people here are immature. The argument itself (including the ludicrous strawman "of you want a single mention of a detail that has a somewhat sexual nature, that's just the same as inserting the most deliberately shocking /d/ shit out there!"

I like this, but wouldn't it be fun if we added a counter mechanic to this?

As attunement increases, your clan weaknesses affect you more easily. If a can is weak against mind magic, those who are perfectly attuned would be really weak toward it.

We could also add sacred animals and monsters associated with each sign.

>>27626800
The whole shifting thing could be part of the magical traditions of each nation.
>>
>>27626721

>>27626868

You're not talking to the same person. And it hasn't actually been about "big-titted sheepgirls" until the shitfest started. It was a joke that got placed as an afterthought in an otherwise good paragraph. Then everybody shat a brick about it.
>>
>>27626903
What are you even talking about? The first post I made was the mention of furries.
>>
>>27626886
>Attunement in REIGN isn't something you generally get that chargen
You don't actually play Reign then. Hint, it's not capitalised either.
>>
>>27626903

>I think we should not allow people to drive drunk
>I GET IT, YOU SAY YOU THINK WE SHOULD TORTURE TO DEATH ANYONE WHO SAYS THE WORD ALCOHOL
>>
>>27626904
You don't need to balance out attunement. It's an investment of resources that contributes to character power. Just make sure it's not far and away the best.
>>
>>27626935
Pretty much every iteration of the game and Greg Stolze's own website have it all capitalized. That's the only reason I did it.
>>
>>27626906
>Attuning yourself to your zodiac is a lifelong goal and a permanent status. So if you mess it up you're messed up forever.
Unlike in traditional Reign, this setting could make partial attunement not nearly as horrible. Rather, partial attunement just means that you weren't in sync enough with your sign, so as a result you don't have the full capacity of attunement.

So a fully-attune Taurus is basically a minotaur, while a partially-attune taurus is towering, but human, with perhaps stubby horns.
>>
>>27626945
>Big boobs and penises are okay, but people with diphallia disgust me.
You're still a niggerfaggot
>>
>>27626946
Well, from how I read, attunement in Zodiac would how close your birthsign is to your nation's sign. As such, shouldn't it be set in stone during chargen?
>>
>>27627000
He was proposing that it requires a magic ritual, but is still tied to your birthsign.

So basically, people are normal humans in this setting unless they decide to attune. And then your birthsign matters.
>>
>>27626992

As are, apparently, the very significant majority of adults in the West, if not everywhere, by your definition. But calling me a "niggerfaggot" does make a very compelling argument.

>>27626965

It's been a while since I've been into REIGN/Reign, but I do remember it being always capitalized. Could be wrong, I don't know.
>>
>>27627028
>Everyone hates people suffering from diphallia
Source?
>>
>>27627060
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5ScvWXvG6g

Shel Silverstein didn't hate people with diphallia.
>>
>>27627017
I get it now.

It's an interesting idea to say the least. Maybe just not make it a permanent one way transformation but something like lycanthropy.

In parallel to that, we could also have attunement to your nation's magical schools.
>>
>>27627060

But that's not what you said. You said that people with diphallia disgust me. They do. As they do most people, unlike big boobs/penises (depending on orientation, most of the times). I'm not saying it's right to be disgusted by it, I'm saying that that's how things are.
>>
>>27627105
In Reign, it's permanent because it's a sort of magical mark. You can't hide the fact that you're a spellcaster in Reign, unless you stick to low-level magic.

Attunement marks you forever as someone with magic, and marks you in a way that everyone can see.

Along the various peninsulas and archipelagos of the southern part of the western continent, live the Scorpio peoples. Though seemingly varied and disparate, the various clans, tribes, kindreds and societies are somewhat united by their overwhelming drive and independence. To be a slave, be it to another man or to destiny, is seen as the worst fate that can be met in the eyes of a Scorpio. Conversely, the betterment of the self, especially when used to further their society as well, is the proudest goal one can possibly achieve.

While there are many minor groups who bear the name Scorpio, they can be mostly divided into two main ethnic groups: the Avash, and the Ploutok - 'Fire-Dancers' and 'Brooch-Men' respectively. It should be noted that the Avash have several linguistic similarities to the Aries clans, and do have some shared physical characteristics, whilst the Ploutok seem to be distantly related to the Leo peoples. The Avash tend to live further south, and are broader, stronger men than their Ploutok cousins, with skins that are a tanned grey-brown. The Ploutok are taller and slimmer, and their skin tends towards a rich brown, like chocolate.

The differences between these two groups are not merely physical, but philosophical - indeed, to the Scorpio, this is more important than any physical feature. After all, these depend on the mother and father, but only the child can choose their outlook on life. The division is rather simple: the Avash focus on the immaterial - honour, glory, wisdom, fear; whilst the Ploutok focus on the material - wealth, clothing, construction, etcetera. The strong independent streak and powerful drive of the Scorpio people can sometimes be hamstrung by their jealousy and obsessiveness that comes with it, meaning that the tribes stay mostly disunited and fractious.
>>
>>27628196
This changes when one of them becomes great enough to draw the attention of all of the Scorpio. Be it through war or wealth or philosophy or any other pursuit, some people can unite the clans and kindreds through awe at their accomplishments. It is only when this happens that the Scorpio will ever let themselves be slaves to one man's desire. What happens next is up to the object of their awe. More often than not, they will call for a Great Raid, a phrase that causes the southern nations to quake in fear, for when a Great Raid is called, the Scorpio put aside their differences, and set for to better themselves at the expense of others. Soldiers and warriors march from the south, or sail north in great ships or ocean-going canoes. Towns are burnt for the glory of the Avash who seek it, their treasures and possessions plundered by the Plouton who covet such things.

Funnily enough, the whole sheeptits debate itself can be a funny reference somewhere. It's probably even better than actually having sheeptits in the first place.

"Rumors of dubious foundation and unclear origin abound throughout the south regarding the supposed sexual exploits or qualities of the Sheep nation peoples. Debates regarding those have been known to cause some outrage among southern scholars, most of whom have never met nor likely ever will meet a Sheep nation person in their lives, but deeply want to believe."

(In setting, it might be the result of Sheep nation clothing hiding their form. Stuffy woolen coats make them look bigger and puffier than they are)

Didn't /tg/ do something like this a couple years back?

So...what all is happening with the asian zodiac?

It could also be funny if sheep woman actually wore special woolen bra that make their breasts look bigger to look more attractive.

so, about the whole Pisces being part fish thing, i was actually the dude who thought it up and i TRIED to make it seem like the Pisces needed something more then simply being "jack of all trades but master of none" do i figured giving them a slight feature advantage (the teeth, eyes, small gills on the neck, and scales on their wrists) but i didn't intend for them to really grow more fish like as they aged but i suppose its fine depending on the change (extra gill slots, claws on their fingers, scales up their arms to shoulder length, VERY slight fins growing from their elbows and shoulder blades)

but any more then that is uncanny valley, i just wanted them to have an extra advantage considering they don't really specialize in any field besides mastery of low tier magic and their alternative utilitarian use of magic (and a decent understanding of high magics, but far more rare) so giving them a slight armor boost for their arms would mean that they wouldn't need AS restricting armor as other people might need, and the teeth mean bigger chunks of food can be consumed at one time, and with age the fins and gills will allow them to swim quickly and deeper then any other race.

i just wanted a slight physical advantage to make up for the lack of specialization, so thats what i came up with. i never intended for all the furry-fighting over what i thought would be a good idea to boost them and make them more apt adventurers in a more subtle way. they're still MOSTLY human.

that and it worked perfectly into the pisces choice of living areas, either at the coast on the mainland or strewn about their archipelago as well as under-water areas across the ocean floor in and around the archipelago.

Pisces
>government
im thinking a democracy, voting and all.

>economy
food is mostly fish and other sea-life, while rarities from the ocean are their main source of curio merchandise, with a large influx for jewelry such as pearls and gems that can only come from around sea caves or from sea creatures, as well as other valuables.

>physical appearance
you know this.

>religion
WATER FOR THE WATER GOD.

not really. more like they have a more spiritual point of view, the sea being the mother of all life, anything alive is partially its creation, so nature in general is revered by the Pisces people. but littering around bodies of water or in the ocean itself causes most Pisces to get pissed quick.

>magic
masters of all forms of low magic, they make fantastic use of charms, enhancements, and alternative kinds of magic such as enhanced vision, enhanced breathing, ect. their high magic can be more terrifying then other races due to the advanced application that it can be used with (shooting bolts of magic in quick succession from a bow with precision aim as well, magic on a shield that counters blows automatically with magic)

>notes on culture
generally a passive people, they do however enjoy long winded adventures and have made it a custom to send men and women alike on adventures once they come of age, given a few supplies and a mission objective, such as recover an artifact, help a village, general quests to better their surroundings and season their individuals.
>>
>>27629116

Only the ones who've been to the south. They hear all the rumors and feel inadequate (funny thing about those sorts of perceptions in real life is that it doesn't even matter how your body really looks, you WILL few inadequate)

>>27633919

This is really good. Anyone mind doing Leo next? I'm on a pretty long train ride and I don't think I'll be able to type so much on my phone.
>>
How about implementing some sort of time progression where the different zodiac people gain power/abilities during the time when their signs are "active"?

sorry the thread seemed pretty dead last night so i ended up going to sleep.

im a Pisces myself so i came up with most of their stuff, but i suppose i could read up and take a shot at leo. patience while i think something up is all i ask.

>>27640310
cultural notes can encompass values of the culture. like i said, pisces don't take kindly to littering or wasting gathered resources, but especially dislike littering near bodies of water or in the ocean itself. this means they value the planet and the life that's in it, and they also value kindness on a much more subtle level then other races i think.

>government
the one chosen dude is placed upon the kingdoms throne as duke, who rules his kingdom justly and with love, but can lash out extremely over certain offenses against the crown or kingdom.

>economy
since leo has varying territories based on the duke's influence, they tend to have small farms led by families, or in times of dukes rule, sprawling farming communities which nearly triple in size to produce more food for their currently expanding empire, only to flip their fields and shrink again later. the same can be said for any other profession, however due to their placement on the map they have a higher influx of diamonds then others, and it only plays into their personal glory feel more, those who find diamonds keep it secret and attempt to mine them for their fortune, but those found doing so would be punished and goods confiscated by the duke, if one was in place at the time. otherwise, nobility rises and falls quickly due to this, and fortunes can spring up just as fast as they whither away.

>physical appearance
already stated

>religion
personal glory overshadows religion, save for the duke who is not only a government ruling figure but also a figure of worship for some.

>magic
practically non existent save for the duke who can use higher magic and specific epic magics at will.

>notes on culture
personal glory can be a double edged blade, other peoples opinions can be worth just as much as gold to leo's and they strive for good words from all
