Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are FALYNN STURMFUHRER, a member of the mercenary company Demons of Randgriz and a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program. You are now part of the elite, but inexperienced WRAITH TEAM, consisting of you and your fellow classmates from training.

After a grueling year of training and quick battle to get rid of some troublesome pirates harassing Gallia's northern coast, you and Wraith Team have found yourselves transferred to the exotic land of San Salvacion, an entire ocean away from Gallia. You've been brought in to help the beleaguered country suppress the rebels that oppose its rule, as well as counter any possible Erusean aggression from the South.

Unfortunately, the action started much sooner than you thought it would when your base was ambushed literally almost the moment you set foot in it. While the attackers were repulsed, the attack has left you and your squad a bit shaken that presumably poorly armed and organized rebels could strike at the heart of San Salvacion's military power in the south so easily.

Unfortunately, it seems the situation is getting more and more complicated as more players in this conflict begin to reveal themselves, such as Emmerian special forces, Imperial weapon smugglers, unscrupulous rival mercs, and more.

Currently, you've just run into a rather large and very angry Imperial soldier...

"Well, little girl." The man says, his Imperial accent thick and heavy. "My name is Lev Kravchenko. Normally I am a very forgiving man, even if you inconvenience me. But today, you inconvenience the General, and that cannot be forgiven."

He punctuates his words by cracking his knuckles and giving you a terrifying, predatory smile. The blue flames from the demolished ragnite fuel tank licking the air behind him only served to make him look even more demonic.

The pit in your stomach grows ever larger as you try to figure out what to do.

All of a sudden as Kravchenko was about to punch Falynn, a battlecry was heard that pierced the cacophony of the battlefield.

"LEEEERRRROOYYYY!!!! JEEEEEENNKIIIIINNSSS!!!"

"What the fu...[punched in the face], says Krav"
>>
>>27593810
You turn and try to scramble to your feet, but Kravchenko is extremely fast for such a large man. You barely even get to turn around before you feel a tug at the back of your shirt collar, which pulls you back.

"Where are you going, little girl? We haven't even started playing yet!" Kravchenko cackles as he spins you around. The world becomes a blur as he picks up speed and suddenly you feel weightless, and you realize he's just tossed you through the air like a ragdoll.

You try to reach for your assault rifle, but realize it's not there. It must have come loose while Kravchenko was flinging you around. You see him slowly approach you, that damn smile still on his face.

Unfortunately, Kravchenko refuses to be intimidated so you have no choice but to throw the cooked grenade at him. Kravchenko immediately retreats, but not before throwing his own grenade.

And it sails high over your head, and you begin to wonder just how bad his throwing arm is until you realize that he was aiming to throw it BEHIND you to cut off your escape. Penned in between the tightly packed rows of tanks, you've only got two directions to go: through the grenade or climb over one of the tanks.

As you try to sprint past the grenade, you realize that it's landed right in front of you. Thinking quickly, you kick it to the side and it clatters underneath one of the tanks.

Well, you mostly successful in avoiding the grenade. Mostly. The device explodes literally a split second after you kick it away, knocking you down.

You're... you're not sure how much time passes, but when you regain consciousness, all you can feel is pain. Groaning, you pick yourself up from the ground and wince from pain. Your armor has mostly protected you from the shrapnel, but not the shock from the blast, and it feels like your gut's been put through a blender. There's also some nasty cuts on your brow, constantly leaking blood into your right eye and you keep habitually wiping away at it.

You look around, but Kravchenko is nowhere in sight. There's a small crater where your grenade used to be, but no sign of him.

You check your bag and see that you've got about five ragnaids left. Maybe you should use one...?

You start trembling. You're not going to get far hurt like this, so you quickly grab a ragnaid and pop it, the soft blue glow giving you some relief. The cut over your eye also closes up so you can actually see out of it now.

Suddenly you hear something moving behind you and you turn in time to see Kravchenko standing atop the tank behind you, that predatory smile still on his face. From the cuts and scorch marks, it seems he didn't get away from your grenade unscathed either, but it doesn't look like the wounds bother him at all.

"Oh, good, you're still alive, little girl." Kravchenko laughs. "It would be a shame for this game to end so soon!"

Unfortunately, your arms are still trembling, so your aim isn't so good, especially with the distance you're at. You do manage to score a hit on his shoulder though.

And he grunts in pain.

The grunted in pain.

He was STILL ALIVE.

He slowly gets to his feet and spits out some blood and gives you a crimson, toothy grin.

"That was some very good shooting, little girl. I probably would have died if it were for this."

He then reaches under his shirt pulls out a ceramic chestplate, cracked and dented in three spots where your bullets hit. He tosses the plate the aside and reaches into his belt.

"And you are not the only one to have ragnaids, too."

And with that, all the little gains you had made were undone by one blue flash of light. Kravchenko stretches his neck and arms.

"We shall continue the game, da?"

You try to run, but with you weighed down with all the engineering gear you're carrying, doubled with the fact that Kravchenko is now lighter without his protective chestplate, he catches up to you in seconds, tackling you from behind and slamming you into the side of a tank, pinning you there with one his powerful arms.

"You must learn to run faster, little girl." Kravchenko says, his breath hot and filthy against the back of your neck. "Perhaps I can help you in that matter."

The first thing he takes is your gun. He pulls it out of your hands, ejects the magazine, and tosses the weapon away into the distance. He then takes his own handgun and tosses it away as well.

"To make things fair." He says.

The next thing he takes is your armor. With one great tug and he tears off the protective plates guarding your chest and back. You're already in tears at this point, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Falynn, Falynn, do you read?" You hear Hudson's voice crackle from your radio. "Falynn, are you there? We're headed for the rendezvous."

"Oh, you have comrades here?" Kravchenko smiles. "Then again, I probably should have suspected. There is no way a silly little girl like you could sneak in here by yourself, correct?"

That really hits you in the emotional gut and you start sobbing even more.

(cont)
>>
>>27597111
"Falynn?" Hudson calls again.

"That voice..." Kravchenko furrows his brow and them smiles in recognition. He takes the radio from your belt and activates. "Agent Hudson, is that you? I recognize that voice from anywhere! It's been so long!"

"....Kravchenko." You hear Hudson say. A statement, not a question.

"Such a small world, for us to meet like this in Erusea!" Kravchenko laughs. "Though I never thought you'd be desperate enough to recruit little girls to your team! Tell me, how is Bowman doing these days?"

"FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE!" You hear Woods scream. "I'm gonna tear your fucking guts outta your ass!"

"Ah yes, Woods, and I suppose Mason is there as well?" Kravchenko cackles. "Do not worry. I'll be sure to take care of little Falynn here just like I did with Bowman."

"You son of a bitch, Kravchenko!" Mason yells.

"Falynn! We're coming to get you!" You hear Lucina say, trying to sound reassuring. "We're coming to get you! Just hold on!"

"Ahhhh, desperation. It is so delicious to see others squirm in fear and terror." Kravchenko laughs and shoves the radio against your face. "Now beg for your life. Be and plead for me to treat you nicely, that you'll do anything not to be hurt. And be sure to say it loudly, I want your friends to hear it, too."

Well considering we've had like a dozen chances to escape so far it's prolly just the waifufags throwing Falynn to the wolves to improve their prospects. But it's clearly the dice god's fault for making this such a wild ride.

Your fingers almost reach the pins, but Kravchenko recovers much faster than you anticipate and your heart stops when he grabs your arm.

"Hah, you have fight and spirit in you, little Falynn. I respect that." Kravchenko smiles, wiping the blood from his nose with his other hand. "That is why I will not kill you right away."

He turns on your radio and sets it on the tank next to you, stretches your arm out, and slams his elbow straight down on yours. You feel the joint bend in a way it was never intended to and you hear a sickening CRUNCH. Your bloodcurling scream echoes in the air and across the radio.

"FUCK YOU KRAVCHENKO!" You hear Woods yell. "What the fuck are you doing to her!??!"

"Come and see, if you want to find out so bad!" Kravchenko cackles."Give my men your regards first, though!"

Kravchenko leaves you a whimpering, crying wreck on the pavement as he paces around you. You clutch your broken arm, wishing the pain would just go away already.

"Please, it is just a simple broken arm! Use your ragnaid!" Kravchenko laughs. "There is a reason I let you keep it, you know!"

You look down at your first aid bag. Your ragnaids are right there. It was so simple to just reach down and use it. To fix up your arm. But you know that Kravchenko would just wind up breaking it again, or something else to keep making you use up your ragnaids until they were all gone.

Look at the bright side--if Falynn is offed, this could be the impetus for getting the rest of the team to harden the fuck up, and just might be the motivation Jager needs to be pulled out of retirement for one more mission, get the band back together, and really do some damage.

>>27597895
>Mmmm, it's only when things start going wrong you start regretting your choices huh? Plus I mentioned before that Morgan currently cannot help because smoke from the fire is screwing up visibility in your area. You never got clear of it.

Taking a deep breath, you steel your resolve and grab a ragnaid from the bag. You grunt as you set your broken arm so the ragnaid can heal it properly and you activate the device. You might as well take advantage of Kravchenko's sadism to try and figure a way out of this, right?

That's more like it.

Throwing the spent ragnaid away, you take several ragged breaths and get up to your feet.

It's not over yet.

But... but you don't have any weapons on you. He took your gun and your grenades and explosives. What can use?

THINK! You're an engineer aren't you? Did you fall asleep in Heloise's classes or something?

Maybe... maybe you've got something on you that can help?

Excluding the ragnaids, you've still got your wrench, a spool of concertina wire, a wire cutter, a can of spray paint, a lighter, a couple of blasting caps, several spare magazines, three flares, and lots and lots of duct tape.

>>27598138
We have the ability to do some pretty interesting stuff with all this. You can make a flamethrower with the spray pain injected with the ragnaid, with a lighter to burn things up.

The wire can be used as a hammer of sorts to set off the rounds in our magazines.

Give me a bit to brainstorm some more

then throw it and run like fuck

a bullet puller is a great tool because they are cheap and EASY to use, but modern propellants from 1920's onwards are perfectly fine to tinker with as long as your safe, steady and know what you're doing

How do blasting caps work?
>>
>>27598408

Have you watched the first Die Hard? Do you remember that bag of fuses that John McClane nabbed from the terrorists that could detonate C4? Those were blasting caps.
>>
>>27598408
It explodes a tiny bit to set other things off, like C4.
>>
Why not put a blasting cap on the spray paint, wrap the concertina wire on the can with the spare mags, finish it off with some duct tape.

Voila, custom grenade.
>>
>>27598453

We need a way of detonating the blast cap--and without a remote trigger, that might be a bit difficult.
>>
>>27598138
You take a deep breath.

That's the spirit.

You see Kravchenko with that big smug smile on his face, and something inside you just wants to do everything possible to wipe it off.

He deserves it.

It's probably the only alternative you have, anyways.

You won't solve anything by giving up and running away.

You do your best to try and take the tackle, but against your unarmored torso, it hurts like fucking hell.

It's survivable.

At that moment you whip out your spray can and jam it into Kravchenko's face and hit the button, and you hear him roar in anger as bright orange paint meant to mark mines and booby traps sticks onto his face and eyes. He throws you off in a rage and you're sent slamming into another tank, temporarily dazed. Kravchenko stumbles around, trying to wipe the paint off his face. Joke's on him though, that shit's designed to literally never come off.

Hahaha, yeah, you and Charlotte found that out the hard way.

It was almost, cathartic, the way you worked. Picking up the wrench, slamming into Kravchenko's knee in order to knock him off balance. A few hits to the arms since they kept getting in between you and his face.

That's it, Falynn. You won, it's over.

Oh no, it wasn't over. Not by a long shot. You small as you drop your boot onto his chest, causing him to wheeze as you force the air out of his lungs. Was this what it felt like to be good at what you did? It felt pretty damn good.

You're alive. That's all that matters.

You sigh. You were really tempted to strangle him with that concertina wire. It would have been the perfectly slow and painful death for a bastard like him.

Don't think like that.

Well, his grenade bandolier was still there. You duct tape Kravchenko's hands together and grab hold of the pins.

"What are you..." Kravchenko mumbles through burnt lips.

You learn to kill quickly in the army but this guy is too sadistic and let his better judgement get clouded that is why he died.
>>

Considering Kravchenko is an EWII veteran, age was not exactly on his side, either. He is literally just as old as Reznov is.

>>27599214
You really wanted to say something witty, or funny, but... your mind is just blank. Besides, no reason to make his death any more memorable. You pull the pins from his bandolier and drop them all over his face so he can realize what's going on.

You turn and walk away, and you hear Kravchenko scream and curse in rage before it's cut off by an explosion.

You then pick up your radio, still sitting on top of the tank where Kravchenko had left it.

"Hudson." You say, your voice level and almost devoid of emotion. "Are you still there?"

"Falynn?!" You hear Hudson yell. "What happened? Where's Kravchekno?"

"Dead." You mumble. You look in your hand and realize you're clutching his dog tags in your hands. You never even realized you had taken them.

"W-what?" Hudson says, genuinely surprised.

"Yeah." You confirm. "I... I need a way out. Can you help me?"

"We can't come directly to you, Kravchenko's guys are still blocking us!" Hudson says. "Morgan, do you see anything?"

"Ummm... the south side is pretty much open. Once you reach the fence you'll be outside the smoke and I can cover. you." Morgan says.

You nod and start making your way to the nearby chain link fence.

You did good Falynn. You did real good, there.

A serious exploitable weakness that gave Falynn all the goddamn time in the world to build up some good rolls.

I wouldn't be doing this if we had some decent rolls in the start, but the fact that we still won despite some terrible failures is just utterly SoD breaking.

Valkyria Chronicles is not where you want to be for SERIOUS consequences. Going by that, Jaeger should've been dead about thread 6, Sam should be dead, Karla should be dead, Ramirez should probably be dead too...

We were given a chance to do some cool shit with some wire a paint can and blastcaps etc. but we decided to just use the tools separately. Nothing wrong with that, I for one appreciate at least having the option to pull a Heloise.

I for one would like see unhinged Falynn manifest in taking a more aggressive approach to Lucas.

When you reach the rendezvous the very first thing that happens is that you get caught in a bear hug by Lucina.

"Falynn, thank god you're safe!" She cries.

"Jesus, you look like hammered shit, Falynn." Woods gives you a slight grin. "Is that bastard really dead?"

You wordlessly toss Kravchenko's dog tags to him.

"Serves the bastard right." Woods spits. "Whatever you did to him, it was still too good for him."

"I think you deserve to keep it." Mason takes the dog tags from Woods and hands them back to you.

"Okay, that's enough. We'll sort this out once we get back to the Bastion." Hudson sighs. "This place is going to be crawling with Eruseans pretty soon."

"Come on let's go." Lucina takes your hand. "We're going home."

"Home..." You mumble and glance back at the plume of smoke hovering over the base. You felt like you were leaving something behind there, something that...

You resolved to be a braver person than you were before. You didn't want to be that crybaby Falynn who was too afraid of herself. You...

You...

You were going to be the best goddamn engineer ever.

Meanwhile, in an unnamed Erusean medical facility...

"How bad is it?" General Nikita Dragovich asks the clearly intimidated doctor.

"W-well, sir, he has serious burns and shrapnel wounds all over his body. Frankly, it's a miracle he's even still alive." The doctor stammers.

"Prognosis?"

"We've done everything we could, but he's probably not going to last the night. The best we can do is ease his suffering."

Dragovich frowns when he looks through the observation window. Below, he could see surgeons frantically working on what was left of his faithful second in command, Colonel Lev Kravchenko. It was probably the closest he would ever come to feeling genuine sadness.

"Well, in that case, transfer him to Lab 935. We can't let a good specimen go to waste."

"Y-yes sir." The doctor bows.

"Don't worry old friend." Dragovich says to nobody in particular as he exits the room. "I will do what I can to save you."

Eh, I prefer lighter tones. After Ghost Quest, I honestly don't want to get into really dark stuff for a while.

A mix of both is always good. Some moments are better cheerful and happy, and then sometimes shit just needs to hit the fan.

It makes things more interesting that way.

>>27600120

I liked what you did with the tone, but our rolls fucked everything up. Also, what did you have in mind when you let us MacGyver our gear?

I like the slightly darker tone. After the super amazing 20's parade of idealism that was the first VC quest, something like this isn't bad. And now, goodnight.

>>27600120
If you are going darker, never extinguish the light or else everyone will be lost int he darkness. A.K.A. Don't make it so dark that everyone doesn't care who wins or loses.

I do like that the darker tones, but I would prefer that the danger actually be real instead of just being a false lead.

Stick to the brighter more idealistic way of things, the darker tones don't work well with the way you write and QM a game

When are we going to be able to level up the rest of our squad? and there's nothing wrong with the tone, it's just that the dice can make things really dark, really fast.

I like a mixture Merc.

Like they say, the night is darkest before the dawn.

Watching Falynn come out of this has been satisfying in the extreme even with all the heartache and rage this session.

To be more specific, I like it when we overcome the dark tone. And hooray for no more fucking Pessimism.

I'd suggest a good mix. There is darkness in the world, but it can be overcome by the light. It just isn't easy.
>>
>>27600211
Clearly you have not played Black Ops.
>>
>>27600120

I like it, it resembles the last quest while still being distinct in its own way. Just remember to be lighter.

And hopefully, we get an enemy that would actually kill us instead of dragging things out so our highest out of 3 wouldn't be able to bail us out. I mean at the very least Falynn could've been a captive used to extract intelligence.
>>
>>27600120

A mixture is key I think. Dark situations should happen but at moderate pacing. This way you can work both angles.
>>
To be honest, the only reason why this chapter went dark was because of those 2 and 3 critfails. I do like how we managed to get rid of that potential though.

Well, if it makes you guys feel any better, Falynn vs. Kravchekno was probably the darkest it was going to get.

In all honestly I was never going to pit Falynn against Kravchenko in the first place until I realized how detrimental Pessimism was going to be when I actually saw it in action. Falynn vs. Kravchenko was intended to be a catalyst for Falynn to lose Pessimism for something else, so it was never framed as "win/lose" situation, only as what sort of person you wanted Falynn to turn out to be. Plus we are essentially playing a side chapter. I'd rather keep big plot developments for the main storyline.

>>
>>27600307
If you really came in here expecting actual rape, it's probably not the quest for you.

And for people complaining about how Kravchenko could have survived, I think you're forgetting we're in the same setting that has people capable of turning themselves into nuclear bombs and smacking tank shells out of the sky, as well as lots of RAGNITE.

>>
>>27600342
>good plot development

I don't call assassinating Kennedy and "THE NUMBERS MASON, WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN?!" good plot development...

the tones, themes and plot of black ops do not fit well in VC verse
>>
>>27600320

Shit man, we don't have to exactly follow whatever is being referenced.
>>
>>27600363
I mean for intelligence, there could've been a rescue later on. Maybe character development is a better word.

Frankly, I like the change in genre, there's only so much of one thing you can take before becoming sick of it. And this being a war, VMQ could easily shift to compensate. No reason Merc should always stick to the same scenes laid out before him. And also, VC3 got noticeably dark as well, so it works.

It was a nice change of pace, all being said. It got a bit worrisome during the beatdown, but the same sorta feels get stirred up in any sort of boss battle. A bit of the old ultraviolence is good now and then, but I think that the reason it was just so offputting this session was because it just kept going on and on and it was being dealt to someone who, quite frankly, we didn't want to see it dealt to. But it's the way that those incompatibilities in things line up that make up for good stories. Creates conflict. Now I'm pretty sure if we did this with someone more...thematically appropriate...it would have been a bang-up job and much much shorter, but it wouldn't have had the same tension.

All that being said, I think we should stay the course for maybe another thread, and see where this new perspective takes us.

People generally seem to forget that most of the battles in VMQ ended up becoming horribly one sided because the players would get really good rolls while the enemies kept flubbing.

That's definitely the biggest problem I have with it.

I dunno, maybe you should make crit-fails just crit, but lower the damaging effects? I mean, the highest in 3 gives us a biiiig advantage, and the reason I found this so exciting was that we could reliably fail for once.
