You are an adventurer, though presently it looks like you won't be doing much adventuring in the immediate near future. On your latest quest, an old curse you'd thought long behind you reared its ugly head once more -- a curse of possession, in which your mind is temporarily consumed by a demon of sadistic bloodlust, driving you to kill with savage abandon, even attacking your own friends and allies.

Not a condition very conducive to working with a team of fellow adventurers, and particularly not conducive to your present role as a "Producer", an experienced mentor and guide to the many rookie members of 765 Professionals (more often called 765Pro for short), the adventuring guild you recently joined. In light of this recent relapse, you've decided to take some time off from active adventuring, staying away from stressful and violent situations until you can get your spiritual house in order once more.

But first, you need to break the news to your guildmates. Presently, the only ones who know of your condition are those who witnessed it firsthand and the guild chief himself. Since you'd thought it a matter of ancient history, you felt it more prudent not to divulge this dark element of your past, but now that it's part of your present the people you'll be working with have a right to know.
>>
>>27590602
Heading to the Chief's office, you let him know that you're ready to make your announcement to the guild. He accompanies you back out to the main room of the small guildhall, and calls for the attention of the members scattered about, relaxing as the day winds to a close.

"Everyone, if I could have your attention, please. Your new Producer has something important to tell you."

He turns to you, stepping aside for you to stand front and center. "Producer?"

>What do you say to the guild?
>>
Also, magic number for tonight is 3. Again. I swear, I need to do some heavy testing of these dice. They must be weighted or something.

If you don't know what this "magic number" stuff is all about, see the pastebin in the OP for a primer on the dice mechanics used in this quest.

I like this. Though it makes it sound as though he is leaving rather than backing away from adventures for a while. Maybe changing 'short leave of absence', to 'time off from major assignments' or something like that, other than that I think it's good.
>>
>>27590605
Clearing your throat, you look out over the room full of young women. It's not really a position you're used to being in, making speeches like this. Giving advice and instruction to rookies under your charge is one thing, but this sort of scenario is quite awkward. You're tempted to brush it off with a joke, but you know that wouldn't be fair. The guild needs to know the truth, and it wouldn't do to understate the gravity of the situation.

"Um, well, I know I haven't been here very long, but in the short time I've been your...Producer..." (that title still feels weird to you), "I've already come to feel like you're all practically family to me. And family shouldn't keep secrets from each other."

You look to the five who'd accompanied you in the goblin tunnels and found out your secret firsthand. From the moment you gathered everyone for the announcement, you could tell they knew what was coming. Yukiho fidgets uncomfortably, as do the twins. Miki narrows her eyes in a stony glare, her posture stern and serious, a sharp contrast to her usual relaxed and easygoing demeanor. Haruka (gods bless her) is leaning forward, earnest and worried. You can practically hear her reassuring you and cheering you on, and in fact it looks like it's taking all of her effort not to actually do so outright.

"I'm afraid I'm not exactly the upstanding guy I might have initially come across as. I try my best to be, but I...well, it seems I'm cursed to fail. Literally cursed, that is."
>>

>>
>>27591628
You see looks of worry and puzzlement fall over the faces of those who don't already know where this is going.

"When I was a boy, I was exposed to unclean influences, and ever since I've had a demon lurking in the corner of my mind. A demon of violence and bloodlust. From time to time it takes possession, and when it does I...well, I become a monster. It drives me to do terrible things. Unforgivable things."

The looks of worry deepen, and puzzlement gives way to shock and horror.

"I didn't tell you before because, up until yesterday, I'd thought this was all long behind me. But last night I fell under possession for the first time in years, and...well, if I hadn't been with such a capable party of adventurers, I would have stained my hands with yet another unforgivable sin."

The guild is positively stunned now. You see Yayoi tugging at Ami's sleeve beside her, peering plaintively at her in desperate hope of some indication that this might all just be some sick joke. Ami answer's Yayoi's wordless plea with a small shake of her head, the grim expression on her face confirming your confession. You see tears start to well in the corners of Yayoi's eyes.
>>
>>27591805
"So, um, I guess in light of recent events, I will be stepping down from active adventuring for some time in order to collect myself. I'm sure I can get this issue back under control, and once I do I hope to continue working with all of you in the field, but it will take some time to get there. I guess it would be too much to ask for your forgiveness just yet for keeping something so important from you, but I hope we can still continue to work well together in the future."

With that you stand aside, allowing the Chief to step to the fore once again. He clears his throat and adds his concluding remarks.

"I would just like to say, I hope you all won't hold this against our new Producer too harshly. After all, the blame lies as much on myself for being complicit in keeping this secret. I assure you we both had nothing but your best interests at heart in withholding this information, though it was wrong of us to do so. I will continue to give him my full support, and I hope you all will do likewise. Oh, and, please do refrain from spreading this information outside the guild. Our new Producer has enough on his plate already without dealing with gossip undermining his reputation. To say nothing of the fact that the whole guild's reputation would suffer for it as well!"

You stand in awkward silence, broken only by the Yayoi's sniffling (and, you notice, now Hibiki's as well), for a few moments as the Chief allows everyone some time for all this to sink in.

You decide to go after Miki. It's probably best to leave the others to their own thoughts and discussion for now, but Miki's already had some time to process the issue and you already know it's going to take some effort to rebuild her trust.

Heading out into the street, you easily spot her mass of unruly blonde hair among the crowd and make your way toward her. You manage to catch up without much difficulty, calling to her as you get close. Turning to face you, she puts her hands on her hips and irritably asks, "What do you want?"

>What indeed? How do you open the conversation?

"Couldn't really stay in there, not if they wanted to talk about it without me hearing everything." scratch head akwardly. "I'm guessing you still want me gone?"
>>
>>27592159
Ask about how she thought of us before, during, and after the incident, and ask where she's going if it's related to what's happening now.

Maybe we can get a mail going by the end of the day to the guys who took care of us in the backstory - they're the ones who contained this demonic incursion sitting inside us.
>>
>>27592221

This and ask wheres shes going.
>>
>>27592159
"Couldn't really stay in there. They need to talk it over, and they can't really do that with me right there within earshot." You scratch you head awkwardly. "I'm guessing you still want me gone?"

She glowers at you for a moment, then tosses her head with a petulant "hmph". "Wouldn't hurt." She turns away and continues on the way she was going before you stopped her.

You follow her, easily keeping pace. "Mind if I ask where you're going?"

"Nowhere important."

Offer her some made-up responsibility to make her feel important. Or ask for her opinion on something and let her know it matters.

>>
>>27592727

>>
>>27592783
Yah, good point.
>>
>>27592783

I kind of feel that asking for all that information at once will not yield good results. And we do already have a rough idea of what she thinks, pre and post event, based off how she was untrusting of us.
>>

>>27592902

>>

I really did think I could put that all behind me, but even so I know it was a bad idea to keep it hidden. But...is there maybe more to it than that? Do you have any other reason to distrust me here?"

Miki stops in her tracks and stomps her foot with an angry growl. "That! That right there! I don't get it! How can you be so nice now after...after the way you were? By this point you've moved away from the more major roads, so the crowd's been pretty sparse, but you cast a glance around to make sure there's nobody within earshot to overhear anything compromising that might be said. You're pleasantly surprised to find that, by some miraculous fluke, the area around you is not merely sparsely populated, but in fact all but deserted. You still lower your voice to be on the safe side, but you're pretty confident that you won't be overheard.

"Well...that is kind of how this whole possession thing works," you say. "The crazy side isn't me, it's the demon taking control."

"And how do I know it isn't still in control and just trying to trick us?" Miki retorts. "Demons are liars and cheats, that's what they say at all the temples."

"Well, you do have a point," you concede. "But tell me, did the way I was in that cult shrine seem at all like the work of a subtle, manipulative sort of demon?"

"Well...no. But maybe that's all part of the trick!"

"What, to lull everyone into a false sense of security?" She nods at this. "Well, perhaps it could be. But, supposing it is, doesn't it seem like I've been doing a lot that works against the demon? If it were in control and wanted everyone to be complacent, why have me tell everyone about it in the first place? Or why have me stay around a bunch of top-notch adventurers who could kick my ass if need be rather than go be around helpless regular people?"

>Cont.
>>
>>27593932
Miki ponders this for a bit, then turns her nose up defiantly. "Well, I'm still watching you, nano!"

You chuckle at this. "And well you should. I'm counting on you to keep me in check if things ever get out of hand again, ok? Blast me with lightning right in the face, if that's what it takes!"

Miki stifles a giggle at the mental image, and you continue walking along in silence for a few minutes. You're still not too familiar with the city just yet, but you're pretty sure the way you're heading is roughly in the direction of the temple district, though not really the way you'd taken previously.

"So," you say, "mind telling me again where you're heading?" You're starting to feel like heading back to the guildhall, but it would at least be polite to ask one more time before leaving.

"To the Sacred Park, nano."

Ah, yes, you've heard of that before. Most temples of the Vagabond maintain a small area of land near the temple in its natural state (or at least near to it), but in most cases that space is relatively small, and at any rate not particularly of interest given that similarly untamed areas are not far away in most towns. Here in the great city of Kethyria, however, it can take quite a substantial walk to get out of the city and into the surrounding countryside for those who'd like to spend some time in more natural surroundings. But due to the considerable prosperity of the city and the signficant fraction of that prosperity that flows into the temple district through tithes and donations, the temple of the Vagabond here is able to hold a fairly considerable swathe of land, rather not unlike a typical noble house's private game preserve. This park, however, is open to the public for religious contemplation and general recreation -- though hunting and fishing are prohibited except on certain festival days, when the temple allows it in limited quantities.

"Haha, well you enjoy yourself at the park then. I think I'm gonna head back to the guildhall and see how the others are doing." You give her a little wave and turn back the way you came.

"Bye-bye," she says.

By the time you get back to the guildhall, it's getting to be fairly late, close to the time everyone would normally start to head home, and given the Chief's advice to the girls to take the rest of the day off you wonder whether anyone would still be there, but you find that only the twins have left so far. You see Haruka (holding her puchi counterpart on her lap) and Chihaya on one of the couches in the main lounge area, with Yayoi and Iori on another in that space. Azusa is talking softly with Ritsuko by the latter's desk. Takane and Hibiki are near the hearth, while Makoto and Yukiho are in the kitchen area. Kotori is at her desk by the door as you walk in.
