Somewhere in the cluttered room a clock ticked rhythmically, the only proof any time was passing at all. Yet, if the young man had only stopped to look out his workshop window he would see the soft glimmer of the next day breaking over the horizon. His eyes remained glued to his task, following each of the steps with extreme concentration. The last steps pass by with several more tickings of the clock and he ran a delicate hand over its surface, admiring his fine craftsmanship. Smooth and polished, it rested in his hands, feeling eerily light for a divice of its size. It looked no different than the other failed attempts, but this time he knew with absolute certainty he had gotten it right.

Soon everyone would know the truth about it.
The only step left was testing.

Welcome to Salem Institute Quest! Sorry I'm a bit late, there was traffic.

So talk about how this is going to work:
This quest will use a simplified version of the homebrew HP RPG system. I'll call for rolls against a target number at various times, you get circumstantial bonuses as well as bonuses from character creation, equipment etc.
Other times (usually for social interaction) you will use a voting system.

>First Ten votes get counted
>Best of First Three votes that link to my posts get counted
>Rolling low is good
>Crit fail or success (100 or 1, respectively) supersedes other rolls

So without further ado, let's begin character Creation:

Honestly these are a bit low at the moment on the whole. 11-15 is low, 16-22 is average 22+ is really good. I may give you guys one major and one minor boost to your stats after character creation is hammered out if you want. Its up to you guys.

You come from a long line of Pureblood witching family originating from Hati. Your great-great-great-great-great Grandmother had traveled to America as a little girl to study at the Institute and it's been a focal point of your family's pride that she was taught be the founders themselves. She was known as a very talented witch, or so your family says, and made her fortune as an enchanter of Automotons (knee high enchanted mechanical creatures).

Though your family has long since gotten out of the crafting business there is still a certain pride about the occupation.

>That's certainly an interesting family history. But how are people going to know who YOU are?

Natalia Jean-Louis,

It is with great pleasure that I, Theliza Strombourg, invite you to study at The Salem Institute starting on August 12th. Attached is list of all supplies needed for your first year.

Please inform us of your acceptance no later than July 1st.

Sincerely,

Theliza Strombourg
60th Headmistress of The Salem Institute

Your eyes glide over the page once more, excitement growing with each passing moment. When the letter first arrived mid-May it was crisp with glossy ink but now due to the constant opening and closing of it (as well as bringing it nearly everywhere with you) the quality has worn down the page slightly.

You knew it was coming. There would be no doubt about it. Being a young witch from a long line of purebloods would have no trouble getting into The Institute. Well, unless there was the unfortunate circumstance that you were a squib. However, turning your bed sheet’s colors as an infant had negated that possibility early on.

“Are you excited about going school shopping today?” A female voice says to you. Suddenly all of your anxious happiness drops to the floor. Your dark brown eyes flick up over the paper to see her beaming face illuminated by the sun shining through the bay window. The light gives her crimson hair a red gold look. She pridefully holds a plate in her hand, “I tried something new today. I hope you like it.”

You quickly fold up the letter and delicately tuck it away into your back pocket. “Thanks, Helen.”

>>
>>27558474
There is an uncomfortable look in her eye but she forces a smile as she places a porcelain plate in front of you. Two thin rolled pancakes with filling sit on top of it dusted in powdered sugar. As your dark eyebrows furrow you feel a tightening on your scalp. Even though it took you thirty minutes to braid your hair into two buns you still can't seem to get it just right. You still aren't used to doing your own hair.

As you idly push the food around on your plate you glance at the boxes around you. Some unpacking had been done but every room seemed to still be plagued with them. You wondered why your family just didn't simply use magic to put everything back in its place.

Your Father thought it would be important to move back into the old family home where you spent some of your early years before your mother got sick. At first you were also optimistic, believing that this move could make things go back to the way they were. You should have known better, nothing would ever be the same. You realize this now more than any time before. Specially with your Dad’s second wife, a muggle, in residence.

Your aging Grandmother only put up little protest for reasons unknown. She was usually such a stubborn woman set in her ways. Yet it wasn’t like over in Europe where a union such as this would be a scandal that would ruin the family’s reputation. Things, as you understood, were slightly more relaxed over here. It wasn’t encouraged or common for a pureblood family to marry a muggle, but it wasn’t a death sentence as long as the family approved of the spouse to be. If the muggle seemed worthy of entry into the family then they would be allowed though never fully accepted as an equal.

Helen had returned to cleaning up the aftermath of breakfast. So strange to watch her work so tediously at a task that usually took a blink of an eye to complete. What was so special about her anyways?

You take a bite of the crepe finally. Sweet cream and strawberries. It was actually delicious much to your dismay but you still would give anything to have your mother make you pancakes again.

“Hey little bit!” You hear after a small chorus of foot steps down the stairs. His firm hands grip your shoulders before giving you a quick peck on the cheek. “And you, beautiful!”

Helen had turned her attention away from the dishes, grinning ear to ear. “Good morning! Sleep well!”

Your father goes to her and loops his arms around her waist, quickly giving her a peck on the lips. “Of course! Do you want help with all this?” He gestures towards the mess.

She declines as always.

“So!” He turns his attention back to you, still holding Helen’s waist. “Ready to go shopping for school with Helen and I?”

They both seem pleased with your response and you notice that Helen now seems visibly excited about this news. That's right, she's never been to Crispin's Row. It's weird to think that something as common as a magical market may be astonishing to a person. This of course means you can't use Floo Powder to get there but muggle cars can be fun even though they are a bit slow.

Your Father takes a seat at the table and Helen joins the two of you bringing over the other plates. They talk excitedly about the day over breakfast. You add in your opinions when needed but are still mostly focused on everything that needs to get done before you can leave.

Within the next hour you are packed into Helen's modest 'Hahnn-Da Ack-Horrd' and pull out of the drive way. It hums a pleasant metallic sound at it zips down the "Free-Way".

Once the car is well on its way to your destination your father starts to unclick the safety harness to climb in the back with you before being scolded into submission by Helen. He blushes a bit, but finally brings up the point of your allowance.

He hands you four triangle shaped sliver pieces. Four 'plugs', the largest amount in Witching currency.

The trees in your field of vision soon turn into scattered buildings growing in their frequency until you see a large creme sign welcoming you to Boston. An undeniable grin spreads on your face. Why can't this muggle device go any faster?

Unfamiliar with traveling within these methods your father does his best to navigate through the city but ends up just getting lost in the chaos of downtown. Helen elects to simply focus on finding a parking space first before doing anything else which soon becomes a reasonable request because she has great difficulty in finding one. The battle is finally won when she is able to stuff the car between two others near a pizza place.

Next task is to actually find the entrance. You start to grow concerned that you may spend the whole day running around in this muggle city but your father runs into a woman he knows from work, Vanessa Steele, and she's happy to show you the way. You walk maybe four city blocks before you cut down a narrow ally way.

At the very end of it to the right is a slightly banged up grey door with no visible door knob. Helen looks puzzled but watches on as your father studies it for a moment.

"They always change the knobs on this thing." He mutters and extends two hands over the door. One hand grasps an invisible handle and after a moment of attempts to turn empty air with the other hand something finally makes a loud click. His dark eyes light up.

"There we go!" He proudly exclaims as he opens the door to Crispin's Row.

A new world of light and color emerges from behind the small door. Helen gasps in amazement and wonders out loud how one could do such a thing. You have to stop from giving her a puzzled look, she is just a muggle after all.

The market place is packed with all sorts of families shopping for their children. What's important right now is where do you want to go first?

You go towards the back of the shop and start looking around at the dusty tomes around you. There seems to be less and less organization to the shelving at the back as you see a 'Windleflux World Champions' right next to 'Pratical Dragon Keeping'. The sheer quantity of everything overwhelms you slightly. The store certainly didn't lack a selection, but it was hard to find something that was in your range of reading as well as interesting. You pick up a few books: a red cloth cover to a book explaining the history of Pukiwudges in north America, a leather bound one explaining various tactics for Windleflux, and a skinny black one written in French. All were put back on their shelves after glancing at the first few pages.

Then you come upon a dull yellow spine that catches your eye. 'Nature: A Potioneer's World'. You take it off the shelf and flip through the pages. It contains detailed sketches and explanations of various wild plants and their uses in potions. However, right by it is another book labeled 'Alchemy for Beginners'. Very self explanatory but when you look through it you find that it is very informative and teaches in a way that is very easy to understand.

You've always been interested in learning more about Alchemy. Placing the other book back on the shelf you make your way towards the front of the store to see that Helen has already bought your books for school (hopefully with money already counted out by Father). You also see that there is one additional book in her possession. She must have noticed your inquisitive look because she is quick to defend herself.

"Just some interesting reading." She shrugs then gestures to your book. "What'cha got there?"

"Alchemy for Beginners." You simply respond. "You know, also looking for something interesting to read."

You bring your selections to the check out desk where a man with long grey hair and round spectacles makes your transaction.

>WAND TIEM

Helen and you emerge from East Coast Books to find your father holding an emerald robe bag.

"Hello ladies!" He greets, "The store was packed but I think you'll like what I got you Natalia."

He unzips the bag to reveal a simple, but visibly well crafted pair of robes. You reach out to feel the smooth material against your hands. You know instantly that these robes were not cheap and would only wear slightly by the time you out grow them.

"Where to next?" Helen asks.

"Can we get my wand?" You respond, barely able to hide your exuberance. A wand was the most important part of a witch and the most unique.

Father leads the way down the twisted stone street until you come to a large dark blue building with the words ‘AUNTIE YANG’S WAND EMPORIUM’ painted boldly in gold. You enter to see a fierce looking asian woman, hair pulled back in a severe bun, helping another child around your age.

“I’ll be with you in a moment!” She calls out to you before turning her attention back to the short pudgy girl with long brown hair.

She presents a wand to the young girl and she takes a cautious swish. A loud whip like crack reverberates through the small shop as a spray of fire and sparks erupt out the tip. The girl’s parents seem startled whereas the woman known as Auntie Yang is virtually unfazed. She presents another wand unceremoniously.

“Try again.” She instructs as the girl gives this wand a try. This time the wand causes the flowers in the vase by the register to change from their dull yellow to a vibrant magenta.

Yang seems pleased and hands the box over to the family. They leave the building after giving her a small handful of Plugs.

“Alright,” Yang says as the first family leaves as she repairs the damage done to her shop with a flick of her ebony wand. “I can help you now. Don’t be shy, come up close so I can see you."

You approach.

The stacks of used wands quickly leap up and tuck themselves back into their boxes. Yang has a particular look of satisfaction on her face, much like a cat who had just caught a pesky mouse. Father comes up to the counter and gives Yang a few plugs before leaving the store.

"Well if that's the case I have to show you this place. It's just a couple doors down."

This piques your interest and you are once more following him through the busy streets. However what he leads you to surprises you slightly. The three of you stand in front of a windowless and dingy brown shop that seems squished between two extravagant buildings. You enter and take in your surroundings. You can't help but break into a grin when you realize you'll be getting your first pet in just a matter of moments. You grab your fathers hand tightly and race down the street towards the large round building with stain glass. A blue and orange sign reading "Little (Pet) Shop of Horrors" hangs above the shop's large round wooden door. When you enter you are not surprised to see that it is the most crowded of the shops you've seen today. Fast paced chatter drifts in the air around you as you quickly orient yourself with your surroundings.

The shop itself is a wide open area with various sections for different animals. Salem permits one each student to have either a hawk, tarantula, ferret, or jack rabbit. More large carved signs hang from the ceiling directing you where to go for each.

>Vote on an animal companion.

Get to choose Hawk, Tarantula, Ferret, and Jack-Rabbit.

>Ferret

You almost don't need a sign directing you towards the ferrets. Despite the smell you've always thought they were cute and clever little animals. You always liked to think that you were the same for a girl your age. You come to their large enclosure where several other students surrounding the border. Several ferrets bounce around in the cage together and three catch your eye.

>Which do you want to see?

>The long albino one

You find an employee to help you get the albino ferret out of the enclosure. The young wizard informs you that it's a male as he places his hands in the ferret playground. After a little effort he gets the ferret to come to him willingly. He delicately places the creature into your hands and it blinks at you a few times with its red eyes. He seems pensive as he sniffs your hands and arms. After he deems that you are not a predator he quickly uses the lengths of your arm to crawl to your shoulder and sniff your ears and face.

>SNOWBALL

You can hardly wait to show off Snowball to Helen and Dad. When you do Helen makes a fuss over him, making a point to tell you that Snowball was a great name, very fitting. You're a little bit surprised at how she didn't embarrass you at all by acting slackjaw at everything. You actually find yourself happy to have her in your company.

Finally everything is complete for your shopping preparation for school. As you walk back out down Crispin's Row with your weasle companion perched on your shoulder your mind races with what is to come next. School, sorting, meeting people, (hopefully) making friends.

it's hard to believe that even now Salem is only a week away....

-TO BE CONTINUED SUNDAY NIGHT-

NEXT TIME ON SALEM INSTITUTE QUEST:
-Natalia and Snowball ride on a boat!
-Natalia meets some people!
-Natalia arrives at the Salem Institute!
-Natalia gets sorted!
-Natalia goes the fuck to sleep!

I took the liberty of archiving it earlier. Cheesy, I know, but I didn't want any miscreants fucking with it.

Any thoughts, concerns, suggestions, critiques? Q&A time.

I'm thinking about trying to run it a bit earlier maybe.

Special thanks to Wrenloft who clearly has nothing to do but listen to me ramble. Other anons are cool too.

Nice start for a quest. I'm not really good with critiques, so you probably won't hear much from me.

Though, I do have some questions.
-What time frame does this take place in?
-Are we in HP universe?
-Will we meet canon characters?
>>
>>27561512
also, do you have a twitter account to keep track of future sessions?
>>
>>27561600
-We are in ambiguously modern-day.
-HP-Verse yes
-Most likely not. This is mostly AU.

good start, looking forward to see how this develops and if we become some kind of Voodoo using Dark Lord or even just seeing the differences between Salem and Hogwarts.
>>
>>27561680
Modern day as in 21st Century?
>>
>>27561723
We're set in the same time-period as Archer.

>>27561719
You can do that.

I've worked a whole lot on fleshing out the Salem Institute. This whole quest idea spawned from my writing a Salem Expansion to the HP RPG, so there's quite a lot.
Like Windleflux, the superior American wizarding sport.
>>
>>27561802
Huh, can we also get around to making magitech with muggle stuff?
>>
>>27561849
Not with muggle stuff, probably not, especially since you're a pureblood. However, I don't like to limit creativity a whole lot, so I'll just say that you'd probably find it difficult.

You'll learn a lot more about Magical America next thread, though, so stick around.

catch you later
