You are Percius Aurex, Captain of a raider-class pirate vessel. Formerly the 14th son of a noble family, you fled that life in search of adventure and to escape your status as a political pawn. While on a mission for your wolfpack, you returned home under the name of a man you killed, revealing yourself to your sisters Alica and Synne before you added them to your pirate crew. Along with your fellow pirate Captain Morix, you completed your mission to secure navigational data and joined a convoy heading to your wolfpack's ultimate goal: Sector Corgus. The frontier is effectively lawless, and brave souls venture farther from the Imperium's weak hold upon the sector. Lord Wilson was correct to call such a place a "Pirate's paradise".

Luck wasn't with you during the journey into Corgus through the passage known as 'The Corridor', your ship separated from both your partner vessel and the convoy you both accompanied. Rather worrying, you came across a beacon from the convoy informing several Captains, Morix and yourself among them, that the convoy had moved on without them. Navigator Erin Veritas and yourself had a minor altercation after you ordered her to bring your vessel toward a space hulk in the warp, though you were content to have a chat with her upon the subject of command after she'd led your vessel to your original destination. Nearly a year and a half had passed in the materium by the time your ship arrived at the convoy's destination, Celentis, finding your elder sister Selenti commanding a transport vessel in the name of the Celentis Dynasty. Though Alica used the shock of her presence to negotiate a favorable resupply for your ship, a small family dinner quickly went sour as you dropped the use of your alias. "You're an idiot, Percius. Throwing your name around after what you did in Deus. If you ever return to this system, I'll give the order to destroy your vessel personally. Now get off my ship before I change my mind."
>>
>>27522643

Synne and Alica are already ahead of you as Selenti grips your shoulder and gives you a shove toward a pair of armsmen. "Consider yourself lucky, Captain Menexel. I'd kill you if my sisters didn't depend upon your continued existence." You notice her eyes turn toward the buxom woman just before the bulkhead door seals behind you.

A man with a series of scars along the left side of his face politely nods his head toward you. "If you'd follow me back to the shuttle bay, Captain Menexel, Ladies Aurex."

Synne is quick to exit the lighter after you've landed, but Alica simply places a firm grip upon your forearm and motions for the pilot to exit the craft. As the lighter's ramp seals with a soft hiss, your sister releases you. "What did you do in Deus that our sister was considering killing you in front of Synne?"

"I'll tell you everything, once you promise to never tell Synne."

"Of course, I give you my word."

You tell your sister everything, killing Captain Menexel, visiting the forbidden system of Vectes twice, and ransoming the sisters to the Rogue Trader Alexander Kerr. You even mention your attempt at piracy and nearly being caught in Vectes, much to her displeasure. "A pirate is a bother, they'll always crop up and they'll kill imperials. Trespassing into a forbidden system?" Your sister's normally reserved expression melts away, her gaze shifting to the space before her as her hands begin to move with her words. "Percius! You went into a forbidden system!? They'll, they're going to come looking for you! They don't let people just waltz into a forbidden system! That- that's why they're forbidden! They're going to find out it was you and they'll... they're going to send Inquisitors..." Alica's eyes fill with fear as she looks at you, her hands falling upon her lap.

"They're going to get you, Percius... Just like the family fell, they're going to come for yo-" Her hands are covering her face like a respirator, quieting a gasp as they begin to tremble. "No, no no nononononononononononononono!"

"Alica, calm down. We made a clean get-away, used an alias, and they don't know where we went." Your words calm your sister to a degree, but she still has the look of horror.

"The Inquisition is single-minded, Percius. If they have a clue about who you are... find out who you claimed you were. You've brought death or worse to everyone back home, if they ever discover you were in a forbidden system..." Your sister's hands fidget nervously in her lap. "You never considered what would happen if you were caught, did you?"

"Of course I did, I'm the Captain. I put the crew at risk, but this one sure as Dorn likes living." You give your sister a reassuring hug before hitting the activation rune for the lighter's ramp. "We've a ship to run, and a system to leave quickly. Selenti may very well change her mind if we sit around."

"Yeah, I'll be along, Captain." Alica slowly inhales, lingering within the craft as you head for the bridge.

"Helm, set course for the system's edge and prepare the ship for warp travel once we've taken on the last of our supplies." The bridge bustles with activity, Elise and Erin soon approaching you.

Erin nods at your choice. "This would be a fine time to ensure that you understand how things work on my end, Captain Aurex."

Handing you a dataslate with an updated map, your Navigator smiles. "The grid represents distances that, given calm warp conditions, an average ship will take approximately a week to traverse according to the wider materium. My house's markers for star systems are fairly simple, as well. We represent the systems with a central orb, an orbital ring and a planetary body upon the orbital at a 3'oclock position. Gray systems have yet to be explored by ourselves or allies, while green 'star' orbs represent systems we've explored and have information upon. Orbitals are green if we have confirmed friendly parties within the system, while red is used to mark systems with potentially or overtly hostile parties. Planetary bodies follow a similar color code, though they often are a summary of multiple planetary bodies within the system itself. In rare cases such as 'The Corridor' the orbital and planet are black due to the lack of stellar objects within the system."

"As you can see, Lord Wilson's position is roughly 20 weeks from our current position, 19 units to the right and 1 down. We can expect to experience roughly 12 days upon the ship, while the materium experiences 140 days."

"Any questions, Captain?"

Once more into the warp. Things seem oddly calm, though you're not one to complain about it. Still, it sets some of your crew upon edge and nerves begin to wear thin.

On the twelfth day, Chief Enginseer Yulem allows herself into your quarters after a polite knock. Startled by the intrusion you didn't expect possible, you nearly send the cryptex your father left for you flying from your desk. "Advinessa! How did you open the door?"

Cocking her head to the side curiously, the techpriestess' oil-smeared brow furrows. "I am in charge of the vessel's systems and ensuring they function. Your door's lock mechanism is also keyed to your servo-skull and myself." Your hat-skull floats over to the oil-stained woman, fine manipulators seeming to use sections of her robe to clean themselves.

"Oh. Well. To what to I owe this visit?"

"I've come to report that we've completed work upon the lighter wrecks. Both sets of 'ugly' assault lighters have been restored to two craft, though the arvus wrecks were unfortunately nothing more than scrap. My techpriests have salvaged what they could to add to our stockpiles of spare parts for the other arvus craft. Work has begun upon the void suits, though initial impressions are mildly negative." Noticing the servo-skull circling her robes, Advinessa traces a finger across the brow before shooing the construct back to it's duties. "Might I querry the reasoning for the cryptex, Captain?"

"As my cheif engineer is there anything you need for the ship? Things you think we could use on the ship or maybe you have seen things that could be made more efficiant? You explain the limited story behind the cryptex, though you conveniently forget to mention the note from your father that you're avoiding. Advinessa gingerly takes the broze and ivory object from you, inspecting it carefully as you continue the conversation. "So, what is your expert opinion on the 'ugly' assault lighters? How well do you think they'll perform?"

"Specialty is in voidship systems, Captain. Small craft are, mechanically, familiar, though their subtle nuances and traits are only vague to my cogitators." The woman slowly turns each of the cryptex's disks as she speaks, pausing to listen at times. "The 'ugly' is aptly named, Captain. We've yet to actually fly either craft, but plan to do so once our destination is reached. The pilots will enjoy the challenge of the craft, I believe."

As you retrieve a bottle of your mystery wine and ask about Advinessa's working habits, you notice her shift slightly away. "Querry; pre-mating ritual initiated?"

>Response?

>Off to work, see you at 2pm or so

"Apologies, Captain. I would be happy to join you in such a scenario." Advinessa offers a passable smile as you uncork the bottle and offer her a glass of the vibrant, blue liquid. You guide your Chief Enginseer through the basics of wine tasting, causing her to remove the hood from her head as you instruct her to smell the liquid. Brushing a few oil-soaked strands of hair from her face, the techpriest holds the slowly swirling glass a short distance from her face. "I only smell blessed unguents."

"It smells," you pause, taking another sniff of the fairly viscous wine's aroma, "floral, almost like a Sanguine Blossom in spring." Noting the flat look from your officer, you offer a weak chuckle. "I forget that I'm not home, sometimes. It is a flower that blooms on Garenthis with golden and white pedals, and it weeps a red nectar when in full bloom. They say if you find one with five golden pedals in the shape of a human and two white pedals like wings, it is an omen."

"Of?"

"Some claim it is an omen of fortune, a blessing from the Emperor and his son. Others whisper that it is the mark of a dark death for the soul that first lays eyes upon it."
>>
>>27537167

Advinessa takes well to the remainder of your wine tasting instruction, though you suspect her palate is spoiled by unguent just as her sense of smell is. Eventually you both simply enjoy a glass of wine, the techpriest endowing you with a bulk of knowledge about stress limits and tensile strengths of ship components you've never heard of, let alone seen with your eyes. She does, however, seem to think that the ship is in need of no upgrades, though there is some extra power that could be put to use if components were to be exchanged for others. When you ask about her lack of augmentation, however, Advinessa simply replies that "her mentor" is the reason and quickly changes the subject to your cryptex.

"I have not detected any traces of the device's disks providing clues as to the combination, though I suspect there are several layers of defenses to protect whatever is contained within." Pointing to one of the eleven disks, she returns the cryptex to you. "The m of the ninth disk is an anomaly, being the only letter m of all others to be capitalized. Considering the craftsmanship of the object, I am unable to conclude that it is in error. If it is a distraction or activates a trap, I can not provide a remotely conclusive finding." Your thumb strokes the ninth disk as you hold it, wondering if the sickening feeling in your gut is hatred for your father or hatred that you didn't get to see him die. "Is there any clue as to the contents or the combination, Captain? I've some knowledge of both Cryptology and Numerology if you require assistance."

"No, Advinessa. Not at this time. Perhaps later after your duties are completed we'll see about tasting some more of this wine with some of the others."

"Yes, Captain Aurex."

Advinessa departs, returning her robe's hood to her head.

Two days later your ship bursts forth back into reality at the edge of your destination, your bridge bustling with activity as the augers reach out into the void and begin building an image of the star system. In an instant there is a message from the astropath's quarters, a crewman informing you that Lord Wilson's astropath has confirmed your presence. Shortly after, a vox message reaches your ship. "Captain Aurex! Good to see you, boy. Set course for the planet, we're in orbit above the colony and offloading your barge's latest haul. Someone you lost is waiting here, as well."

A picture of the system is built as your vessel moves toward the vox signal's source. The outer reaches of the system contain a pair of dwarf gas planets, one orbited by a lone moon while the other has only planetary rings surrounding it. Synne wants to visit them immediately, of course, but a stern word from your XO quickly has your sister's excitement kept in check. With that distraction handled, you turn your attention back to the augers. The star's habitable zone has an asteroid belt along the outer edge, though it is mostly comprised of smaller rocky bodies. A vast, rocky planet orbits just off the zone's median orbit, an atmosphere easily detected by the sensors. A barren inner cauldron has only the vibrant, yellow star at it's core.

"Contacts orbiting the planet, Captain. One is broadcasting Lord Wilson's signal, while the other seems to be... Captain Morix's vessel!"

She does not talk about her augmentations to anyone, even her fellow techpriests.

It takes over a week for your ship to reach the planet, a request from seemingly every member of your crew making it's way to either you or Elise along the way. "Elise, what do you make of these requests to visit the planet?"

"I'd like to file a request to go down myself," Your XO slowly grins at your groan. "It will be good for the crew, and maybe we'll find something."

"I'll consider it."

A short lighter flight brings you once again in contact with Erwin Estiban, the man once again showing up in some sort of buggie to bring you to Lord Wilson. The young man is looking a bit older, though his wild grin as he drives like a madman through the vessel's corridors is still youthful. "Good to have you back, Captain Aurex! We were getting worried about you, especially me! You dying means I'm out of a job!" yells the man, the sound of the buggie's engine nearly drowning out his voice. Finally the tires screech to a halt, Erwin bidding you luck with Lord Wilson.

Once again in the presence of Lord Wilson and his hulking trophy of a slain Astartes, you find yourself presented with a glass of violet amesec.

"Percius! Good to see you, lad!" You offer the wolfpack's leader a dataslate with the information you gathered during your misssion, the man quickly looking through the information. "Navy charts? Very good! Imports and exports less so, though I'm sure it will assist us in our hunts." When he arrives at the information on Celentis, Feophe and Labado, the man nearly spits his Amasec. "The Mechanicus are founding a forge world in the frontier? Boy, do you know what this means?"

"There will be a forge world to raid supply convoys to and from?"

"The cog heads believe there is something they want in this sector." Wilson's eyes fill with hunger as he looks at you. "What else have you found, boy?"

"Aye, boy. That rumor has reached even our ears. A warrant just sitting there for the taking, though... seems too good to be true, don't it? Especially how the Dynasty's holdings weren't carved up by rivals, they just turned to whispers." Taking a sip of his amesec, Wilson calls over one of his men. "Have the shutter opened, I believe we'll be over the colony shortly. Now then, Aurex. Where were we?"

"I also encountered a ship's captain at Celentis, working for the dynasty. For the record, I'm no longer welcome there."

"Not everything can go well, especially for our kind. You've provided us with quite a bit of data on Celentis, and our focus is still upon locating our stragglers. Ork ships claimed captains Ristin and Parsen after they became separated from the pack, and Captain Jacobs's ship is believed to have been lost to the warp. Poor bastards." The shutter covering one of the walls begins to retract as Wilson sighs. "But our colony is doing quite well, despite being as small as it is. Those slaves are working quite nicely, as you can likely see on the coming continent, equitorial of the central lakes."
>>
>>27551390

The world below reveals two landmasses, separated by a bright, shallow sea. Lord Wilson's hand motions to a golden section of land below a small belt of lakes, the vague outline of a settlement visible even from orbit. "We've a sustainable population of pirates, along with enough slave labor to work the fields so that their children might be freeborn. It will supply our ships with food, as well as provide us with more crews once we've expanded the wolfpack. Your mining barge has come in handy, as well. Metals for repairs, though we'll need to find a supply of Adamantium ore or raid a convoy with the refined metal eventually." The man grins at you, like a father parading his child before his peers. "I'm tempted to call it 'Astartes Bane', but it seems the population has some other name for it. Damned if I recall the stupid thing, though."

"I'm sure it is flattering, sir. There was also ork activity increasing in Sector Paxia, it should distract the navy soon enough."

"Good old orks. You can always depend upon them to cause a ruckus everywhere and throw your plans into the void. We may need to consider defenses against them, but for now we've denied the local ones access to warp drives." Wilson places his drink down, offering you his hand. We are getting paid for the work our barge did during those two years, right? And we're getting paid for the information we brought back?

>Two years ago in a private room at Rick's, Caseblanco, Sector Deus

"I'll crew and run the barge if you like, Aurex. You'll get a ten percent cut of any gems or any major precious metal deposits we mine. For ordinary ores, I'll earmark a cut of them toward upgrading the vessel with additional cargo modules or we'll see about increasing your cut of ownership in our base. We'll have to negotiate specifics when you return to us, as I can't exactly see the future."
>>
>>27551731

"We seemed to have encountered the same time event that you and Morix did, though we ended up scattered once we actually arrived in Corgus. Only Hariso ended up with my ship, though Captains Torl and Modori managed to stay together as well. Ristin and Parsen ended up on their own, but we located both. Both of them ended up happening upon orks, though. The other Captains could escape the system ships, but those transports were the death of the rookies. Hariso hit their ships until the plasma drives detonated, then got the rest of them out. Jacobs just never showed up anywhere, and the astropath we put upon his ship hasn't responded to any messages."

"So for the past year, we've been setting down the roots of our future here. Most of my ship's crew is down there, along with the slaves and small city worth of pirates that have been bunking. As far as we can tell, there are no humans or xenos on the planet, though we've come to believe that the world was terraformed in the past. No trace of ruins, either. A few of the boys have run across dangerous flora and fauna, though mostly on the continent we haven't settled. There is this one... little creature some of the boys found. Looked like it would make a good snack so they stuck it on a stick and put it over the fire for dinner. Damned things explode like a frag grenade and paint a good square meter bright orange! The blood is mildly toxic, though. I don't suggest getting it on you."

>diseases

"There are a few minor problems with sicknesses, though we've yet to encounter anything really deadly outside of the other continent's swamps. The medicae has advised that no one be allowed onto that continent, but I don't see that being worth the effort. The brave and stupid want to go and die? Let them."

>Mining Barge

"Unfortunately your barge lost most of it's additional ore holds during our trip here. Some sort of damned living shoal in the warp attempted to ensnare our vessel. It nearly took the whole barge, but the skeleton crew upon it acted quickly and saved the barge despite exposing themselves to the immaterium's horror. The few that survived to be put down were gibbering madmen. The craft has served well in this system, though we've been forced to divert most of it's output to ship repairs due to those damned orks."

"We haven't finalized how we'll divide shares of our new home, however. I hope to build a proper space station to replace the meager docking abilities of my vessel, but that seems a very distant event now."
>>
So, what do we do next?
Does he have any orders, opportunities or whatever for us?

A good question: He did say at some point we will have to find a supply or raid a convoy for Adamantium ore, but that might be something for down the line.

Also, I say we ask how he personally has been doing? It has been two years after all. (Note to self: Bring bottle of Protheran Centenial Wine next time we come to see him)
>>
>>27551438
Another good question would be how much of the area around the refuge has been scouted out? Maybe he could update our map with what other captains have reported so far and their findings.
>>
Not sure how everyone else feels, but to me Lord Wilson seems like the perfect father figure and I wouldn't be supprised if that was one of the reasons our dear Percius always checks in with him first.
>>
"I'll have your maps updated soon, Aurex. We've done a bit of scouting, and your fellow Captains are currently out doing some cursory scouting of several systems we detected."

"It has been quite a tiring few years, really. So much to do, so little time. This meeting is the closest thing I've had to a break in months, though I expect you've gotten a bit of time to relax during your travels. I've no orders or tasks to give, though it seems you still haven't done much proper pirating since you've become Captain." With a chuckle, Wilson pours himself a bit more Amesec. "If you want to explore the unknown, explore. I'm sure you'll find something of interest eventually. If you want to head back to the Galian Salient and scout more systems or pirate, we'll fill you back up with supplies."

>updating map, it seems some things reverted despite being saved.

I say tell Lord Wilson that it's good to be back and excuse ourselves because there is a certain captain that we must meet.

Visit Morix
>>
>>27553731
Excuse ourselves and go see how Morix is doing.

Right before we leave I say turn around and ask how strong was the ork force that hit Ristin and Parsen.

Taking your leave of Lord Wilson, you depart his ship and inform your lighter pilot that you'll be paying Captain Morix a visit.

The vessel reeks of death when you arrive, a face you're unfamiliar with greeting you. "Captain Aurex, I'm Len Quistar, the XO. A pleasure to meet you, sir." The man offers a stiff handshake before beckoning you to follow. "Captain Morix was indisposed when you contacted us, though I expect she is ready by now. This way, sir."

You pass several teams of servitors tearing apart entire corridors and spraying what your nose and mouth tell you are chemical cleansers, crew parties lingering behind as they slowly return the corridors to a state of repair. As you make to ask Len about the peculiar action, he opens the door to a modest room. "Captain Morix will see you now, Captain Aurex."

Jess Morix slowly picks a bottle from a small cabinet, her hair longer than you remember, but neatly pulled into a bun. Pulling a bottle of whiskey from the cabinet, she collects a pair of glass mugs and places them at a nearby table. Hesitating, she looks at you with a weak smile. "Good to see you, Captain Aurex." Your eyes are immediately drawn to the long, branching scar that runs from above her brow and down the left side of her face. Her lone eye diverts as she notices your gaze. "Relax, you're not the first to stare. How do you like your whiskey?"

Time to swap our stories on what happened after the storm though from what Captain Morix is most likely going to have to more interesting one.

Morix plucks a pair of ice balls from a smaller section of the cabinet, dropping one into each glass and giving you a glance. "Sit, you're not going to be mingling at some social event." With a sigh, she pours each mug a healthy dose of whiskey and slides one toward you as you take a seat. "How did your trip to Celentis go?" You inform her of the basics of the trip, leaving out the detail that the captain you encountered was your older sister much like you did with Lord Wilson.

"And you?"

Morix downs most of her whiskey at your question, slowly swirling the dwindling ball of ice in the remainder of her drink. "We hit a stasis rift in the warp. Even with the extra rations I'd bought, rationing wasn't enough. By the time we were free, half the crew was dead from a series of mutinies. Navigator found us so off course we ended up back in Deus once we escaped, and the mutinies just came one after another. By the time we made it to Caseblanco, the survivors called it quits and it was just me." Pouring herself another drink, Morix sighs again. "Think they'll come up with a fancy name that goes with 'Cursed' for me?"

>Orders?
>Change the subject?
>Ask about part of her story?
>Ask about the servitors?
>She must be lying. Sense Motive!

Yikes. Sounds like her trip went messy. I think a subject change might be best since that kind of thing could have been traumatic. Guess we can figure out what she's been up to since she got here.
>>
>>27556752
>Change the subject?
Let's try and cheer her up a bit. Maybe ask if there's anything fun to do on the planet.
>>
>>27556752
>Change the subject?

Let them talk about curses and what not, but that doesn't matter because you made it back and i'm now able to share this drink with you.

Speaking of making it we just heard the news about Ristin and Parsen. A drink for those who aren't able join us.
>>
Morix taps her mug against yours, her expression sour. "Good riddens to Ristin. Damned Lech"

Changing the subject once again, you inquire about Morix's actions since her arrival in Wilson's Refuge.

"I've been down a few times, but I fail to see the attraction some of my crew see in it. I caught one of those exploding critters on the Western continent just to see it explode over an open flame. It was entertaining, to say the least." The woman cradles her drink, staring at it. "I was thinking of exploring my way back toward the Galian Salient, find a few orks if I'm lucky."

Silence lingers as Morix finishes her second drink, your own still quite full. "If you'll excuse me, Captain Aurex, I'm afraid I'm needed elsewhere."

>Orders?
>Head back to the ship and do something
>Head down to where your crew are visiting the planet

>Gonna have to call it here for the week. Sorry for all the crazy events recently, hopefully they'll vanish after Saturday.
>Q&A for a bit.

Head down to the planet and see what all the fuss is about.

As for what we are going to do? Well how I see it with all the recent events I feel like we should go out hunting in pairs and the good captain is heading toward an interesting place. Also, we are a wolfpack.

MS, is it just me or does it seem like our wolfpack is getting smaller every time we come back to it?
