So some friends and I are planning on running a Legacy-era campaign during another Galactic Civil War. I'll be DMing and the players will be members of Rogue Squadron. Does /tg/ have any crazy ideas for objectives and missions to throw at the Rogues and their allies?

>Inb4 missile boat boss battle
>>
>>27507334
A genuine Blue Milk Run.
>mind games, a DMs TRUE secret weapon
>>
What in-universe year, OP?
>>
>>27508413
I'm unsure right now but sometime between 45 ABY and the replacement of the X-Wing with the Crossfire (the ship used in the Kol Skywalker era comics). If it doesn't conflict much with canon, I was thinking 45 ABY, pitting the team against Daala's Maw Irregulars and the Galactic Empire remnant.
>>
>>27508514
>Doesn't conflict much with canon
Why not? Most of the canon sucks balls, conflict with it all you want.
If anyone tries to get all pissy with you for not following the shit story, tell them to actually READ their precious story and then come back and tell you it's worthwhile.
>>
>>27507334
I know that everyone wants to be the ace pilot, but is being part of a different squadron so bad?
Of course, then the GM has the Rogues show up and outclass you......
Nevermind.
>>
>>27508990
Alright, then. Fuck it, 40+ ABY Third Galactic Civil War it is. Now on to mission ideas. This is what I've got so far:

>Blue Milk run as pointed out by >>27508328

>Training run with new recruits has team equipped with paint torpedoes in stead of real torps. Suddenly Imperial ambush.

>Adumar-esque scenario in which players and Imps compete to curry favor of planet newly introduced to galactic community. Instead of pure dogfighting, however, the contest will be decided in a race around the local star system. Redline in SPACE.

>Players sent to raid secret Imperial facility rumored to be producing supersoldiers and genetically-engineered pilots. Said pilots and soldiers turn out to be army of flight-qualified Ewoks. Yub, yub, Commander.

>While stationed on Thyferra, the players and their NPC fleet are cut off from allied lines. They have to bargain with local pirate groups and planets using their bacta supplies and build up defenses against an incoming Imperial fleet.

>>27509128
Well, I'd make them Talon Squadron, but that just sets them up for a TPK.
>>
>>27507334
Throw out any and all EU stuff and just make it fun and interesting. (Because lord knows most of the EU isn't that).
>>
>Gungan extremists take over Naboo and hold planetary leaders hostage. Rogues sent in with Wraith Squadron to liberate the planet. HARD MODE: Gungan genocide earns a dark side point.

>Parts of the Katana fleet sighted in the Outer Rim with hard pictorial evidence. Three-way battle ensues among the New Republic, Imperial Remnant, and Daala's forces to capture these ships

>Low on fuel and weapons power, the Rogues are ambushed by TIE Defenders. They can choose to fight the Defenders or evade them in an asteroid field populated by exogorths and colossus wasps

>Experimental hyperdrives installed on X-wings malfunction, send players back in time to Clone Wars

>Malfunctioning Trade Federation vessels surface over a decade since they went missing, attack everyone

>Party's favorite sabacc table stolen by Black Sun. They threaten to place beverages on it sans coasters if the Rogues don't deliver the Super Star Destroyer currently under construction at Kuat to a set of coordinates in the Unknown Regions
>>
>>27509165
>Redline in SPACE
Yes.
YES. YES YES YES YES.
>>27509208
You know you love Courtship of Princess Leia, don't lie.
>>
>>27509420
>Three way battle that involves Daala's forces
Let me guess; she somehow manages to not only lose her ships, but actually manages to make her opponents SPONTANEOUSLY GAIN SHIPS.
>>
>>27509495
By being so much of a crazy bitch that her dudes and the Katana Fleet defect to the other two factions? Probably.
>>
>>27509514
I considered that, but I figured that the opposing forces spontaneously gaining ships was funnier.
>>
>>27509543
>Wait, where did our reinforcements come from? And where did the enemy fleet go? It must have taken some sort of tactical incompete--
>DAALAAAAAAAA
>>
>>27509576
I think you best look up the meaning of 'spontaneous', son. I don't mean that all her forces defect, though I don't doubt they would. I mean that her incompetence is SO great that extra ships appear out of thin air to fight her.
Prestidigitation writ large, as it were.
>>
>>27509611
So, basically, Ursakar Creed is bizarro-Daala?
>>
>>27509656
I shudder to think of what would have happened if Creed had been part of the Empire.
Thrawn? Just a kid playing Risk to a man who can sneak attack with a Death Star.
>>
>Hey, Wedge, did you hear about the book Admiral Thrawn wrote?

>No, what's the title?

>The Art of War.

>Wes, I'm going to kill you.
>>
>>27509808

>>
>>27509420
>An entire campaign based on COASTERS
I am both profoundly disturbed and surprisingly aroused by this.
>>
>Party confronted by ridiculously campy groupies in X-wings calling themselves Rouge Squadron. Awkward meeting with these fangirls (and boys) turns deadly as Imperial patrol fleet stumbles into them.

>New Republic Intelligence stages a public falling out between the Rogues and Pub leaders as part of plot to get Rogues to "defect" to Daala's side as spies. Proceed to tear shit up in TIE Defenders.

>Mandalorian clan leader claims to possess last set of blueprints for the Missile Boat. Puts it up as prize for gladiatorial dogfights. Rogues join dozens of other factions' squadrons in a tournament arc to gain the plans to the deadliest starship in the galaxy.

>Beleaguered New Republic senator requests the Rogues' services in a mission to his homeworld. Claims fear of assassination en route to his planet. Party must escort him in space and on the ground to his destination. Turns out he just wants to show off the Rogues to a girl he's courting.

>While stationed on Tatooine, Jawas steal parts of the Rogues' X-Wings. Hijinks ensue as the Rogues hunt the Jawas around Mos Eisley. Coincidentally, a squad of Stormtroopers is also looking for them, because the Jawas nicked their blasters and explosives.
>>
>>27510120
I like most of these scenarios.
I can see the "Comeon guys! Help me out!" storyline ending with "You know, if you'd just TOLD us, we'dve helped you out."
That last one though, that has some excellent potential. Rogues and Stromies buddying up to get their shit back.
>>
>>27509420
star wars time travel could be cool as hell.
>>
>>27509719
My personal take on Thrawn: Thrawn was bullshitting everyone when he claimed he could predict the actions of enemy admirals from the art their culture produced. He just really liked art, and wanted to get his officers to at least fake an interest when he lectured about art.

>>27510230
How long before the players have the Rogues and Stormies disguising themselves as Tusken Raiders for some tactical hurk-durk action?
>>
>>27510340
Probably ten minutes in, once the Benny Hill theme starts.
>>
>>27510340
I personally like the idea of Thrawn being an art-loving genius twisted by the Wrinkly Bastard, but I think I'd respect him even more if he managed to fake people out while still being Just That Good.

Hmm... I personally preffer TTT for MUH SHIPPEN, but SoA is the funniest EU book around and I love it.
That book has jokes in it I didn't notice for years. That, in my book (heh), is the sign of a good comedy; it keeps giving you laughs.
>>27510651
>Denis as Wedge again
Yes.
>Nathan and Alan together as totalbros
YES.
>Benedict Cumberbatch as a blond
Hmm.... I dunno, I don't see it.
>>
>>27510722
>Tycho
Uh...I don't know. Are there any blond British fellows who can pull off the dry, stoic approach? I'm unfamiliar with the British acting scene.
>>
>>27510736
Does he have to be British?
If it's established character stuff, fine. But don't get a British guy for aristocratic airs just cause you can.
>>
>>27510794
Seeing as Tycho was an Imperial defector, I guess it fit. His cameo in Rebel Strike also had him with a cheap British accent. Alderaan had families with Brit accents, too, so it sort of works in my headcanon. If we're ditching the accent, who else can pull off Tycho? Alexander Skarsgard? Maybe someone older?
>>
>>27510839
>Looking up Alexander Skarsgard
Hmm..... I could see it. He'd have to get flatter hair, but I cold see it.
Fun fact: Kyle Katarn is also an Imperial Defector. And Crix Madine (who fucking DIED in that fucking shaggy dog story of Darksaber which WAS SO DUMB AAAAAAAA).
I wish Jason Court wasn't so old. I would love to see Jedi Knight on the big screen.
>>

>>
>>27510947
what Darksaber? Didn't happen. Not by my canon, anyway.
>>
>>27509446
>Courtship of Princess Leia
I only found out last year that it's generally regarded as terrible, reading the X-Wing books first completely reverses Zsinj's character into something actually passable.
>>
I don't know why, but I can't help but think that somewhere in the galaxy, there are three wacky Imperial Moffs named Clarkson, Hammond, and May running around testing starships with their tame racing pilot, ST-16.
>>
>>27511056
Of COURSE it's terrible! I don't care! It's cheesy and stupid and I love it.
>>27511048
I have begun pruning the shit books I read from my memory, so yeah Darksaber is out. They killed Crix Madine for absolutely no reason, just for THAT it's out. Same with .... well, a lot of the 90s wasn't so good....
I read the Jedi Prince series. Kill me now.
>>
>>27511106
Still better than Traviss. Dammit, all I wanted out of the RepCom series was tacticool espionage actionn IN SPEHSS, but instead I got MUH WARRIOR RACE.
>>
>>27511123

Am I the only one the Traviss hate doesn't make sense to? RC books were written to that part in all of us that really really hates the prequels, and the LotF parts with Fett are the only redeeming bit of that series.
>>
>>27511106
The Han Solo prequel trilogies both hold up pretty well, from what I remember.
So much boring shit, though.
>>
>>27511167
Well see, having not read any of NJO or anything afterwards (except Mercy Kill), I gotta say that the bit of me that hates the prequels hates pretty much ALL of the prequels. Not just the wooden acting and the unnecessary political intrigue, but also the disposable war of clones vs robots.
That, and she killed Muh Redhead.

>>27511235
>Han Solo trilogies
I have read both of those AND the Lando trilogy.
They were positively scrumptious. And one of them was from the 70s/80s.

Problem is that she spends so much time on Mando-wank that it detracts from character development and storytelling. Yes, we hated the fact that Jedi were portrayed as infallibly correct in so much of the SW canon, but her Mandalorians were painted the exact same way. Instead of skullduggery and tacticool operators operating operationally, we got MUH MANDALORIANS.

Personally, I think the Allston-Stackpole-Zahn trinity should be given the task of writing RepCom novels that aren't arse.

>Scorch, why is there a plush toy in the transport?
>Yub yub, Boss.
>>
>>27511247
The main plotlines after NJO are awful, I wish I hadn't bothered. There's two things about the prequels that piss me off. Christensen's acting, and the portrayal of the Jedi in a Lawful Stupid light, and the RC books sidestep the first and stare daggers at the second.

If it helps, my favourite books are Jeter's Fett trilogy, so maybe it's just a Mando thing.
>>
Cripes. Traviss just ruined Mandalorians for me. I pretty much RP'd my Bounty Hunter in TOR as a non-Mando because I couldn't wash the bitter taste from my mouth after reading Order 66.

NJO's... mixed. On one hand, way too much political herp-derping, especially early on. On the other hand, the books after Coruscant falls are all decent-to-good (or great, in the case of Traitor and Allston's pair of books).

What comes after it is either mediocre/boring or just straight-up dire.
>>
>>27511417
I watched Jumper, I think it's both.
>>
>>27511355
Jeter's Fett trilogy! I kinda liked it, but I'm not sure how much of that is nostalgia. I think there was a neat thing with Dengar in it?
Anyone remember the 'Tales of the X' books, where, like, they'd take random background characters from the cantina, or from Jabba's Palace, or the bounty hunters in Empire Strikes Back, and write short stories about 'em? Those were pretty good.

>>
>>27511468
>Traitor/Allston
Gonna need a high-five right here.

I think the primary problem with NJO is too many cooks. The following two series also suffer from it, but more in the sense that all three authors seem to have completely different characterisation ideas. It's like when McNeill took Abnett's Horus and completely ruined the character in the second fucking book, except LotF and FotJ do this back-and-forth three times each so all the authors do is try to "repair" the characters to their personal characterisations which fucks the overall narrative.
>>
>>27511429
Nicole Kidman in her Interpreter look as Lara?
>>
>>27511429

>>
Honestly, I think just about all the EU is shit, especially the stuff after RoTJ because they mess with the story and what happens with the characters so much and their portrayal is just so all over the place.

They should just let go of Luke, Leia, and Han and go a couple hundred years in the future.
>>
>>27511468
I flat out hated the NJO books up until...maybe Balance Point, which I thought was okay. Edge of Victory was good, then Star by Star hit, and I liked pretty much everything after that, especially the Allston books.
Dark Nest and Legacy were just bad and killed any desire to read Fate. Daala becoming Chief of State was a goddamned joke.
>>
>>27511592
See, the comics did that. They're treated as canon, and they're terrible.
>>
I'm really glad to know that, despite hearing a lot of hatred for the EU, the X-Wing series is considered awesome. I was worried that everyone had shit taste but me.
>>
>>27511593

>>
>>27511593

I should probably pick up Mercy Kill, though.

Allston saved X-Wing for me. Stackpole's first four were good, but they were getting a little stale. Stackpole wrote action well and not a lot else. Allston can write action and make me laugh, made Zsinj a credible enemy after the joke he was in Courtship, and the deaths in the Wraith Squadron novels were handled better than any of the nobodies who got axed in the Rogue Squadron books (with the exception of Diric Wessiri).

>>

Wiki says brown hair, like the pic. Granted I have no clue where that pic is sourced from and there's at least one later X-Wing comic series with horribly off-model art. Renner is half a foot short though, Kell's ~6' 4-5"

Why not do an adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy as part of the TV show, but one told mostly from the perspective of the Rogues? Like, we could bring in the good parts of the EU, rework what could be salvageable, toss the rest, and create new stuff to help fill in the gaps (and because there's no point in not telling *new* stories).
Besides, even if the Thrawn trilogy itself is out, something on the lines of the Katana fleet has to make an appearance. I mean, a lost fleet is just too fun an idea to pass up.

Hmm, well I haven't read Legacy so I don't think I'll be able to help with that.
Best advice I can give is that you must resist the temptation of trying to get them to do an existing storyline.
>>
>>27516802
I'm trying to stay away from existing storylines, really. The lack of EU material between 45 ABY and 137 ABY is why I've gone with Legacy in the first place.
>>
>>27516824
And no superweapon plots. Star Wars has had enough of those already.
>>
>>27516904
The farthest I'll go is Super Star Destroyers.
>>
>>27516928
Good man. Oh yes, and remember that unlike the EU authors, you are not contractually obligated to include things from the prequels.
>>
Is it weird of me that I like non-Jedi stuff in Star Wars the best

It just seems like Force users are supposed to be really rare post-New Order yet EU authors just make everyone and their grandmother force sensitive.
>>
>>27517085
Not weird. It's hard to write Force-sensitives well when EU writers can't agree on set power limits, so we end up with ridiculous bullshit like Starkiller running around. There's also the fact that the Jedi code and training inevitably results in flat, stale saber-slinging Vulcans.

And really, it's easier to relate to normals like the Rogues (except Corran because fuck Corran, he's boring) and Wraiths. They're normal.
>>
>>27517123

Yeah, the Rogue Squadron series was my second favorite EU series, behind the Thrawn trilogy. Give me starfighters and smugglers and Imperials. (not too hot on Mandalorians, but bounty hunters are cool too)
>>
>>27517158
Mandos are fine if they don't reach Traviss-grade MUH WARRIOR CULTURE and if they remain an enigmatic, rare, but powerful force on the field. Like Spehss Mahreens.

The problem is when everyone and their mother is a fucking Mandalorian, at which point it stops being interesting. See: The Old Republic RP servers. Seems like every BH but mine was RP'd as a Mando.
>>

>>
Speaking of RPGs, how does one properly simulate space combat and movement? Should I just combine the X-Wing game models, terrain, and tiles with EotE/AoR combat rules?
>>
>>27517085
I prefer Zahn's interpretation that the Force is a talented art, meaning there is none of this 'force sensitive' bullshit. ANYONE could become a Jedi if they had 'the most serious mind, the deepest commitment'. Of course, like anything, some people are born better at it than others and talents run in families sometimes.

Rogue Squadron story hook -
Fighter squadron exercise coming up... only you hear rumors that the winning squadron will become guinea pigs for the latest attempt to replace the X-Wing - which will mean giving up your astromechs, since the new fighter uses a different set up that doesn't involve astromechs at all. Can you 'throw' the exercise in a way that doesn't embarrass the squadron, or find some other way to make sure that you don't get stuck with the new fighters, or get the bureaucrats to give up on the project?
>>
>>27518403
I have the squadron technician go over the schematics.
Since it's a government project trying to forcibly replace something that works just fine thank you, it will invariably be a shitty fighter.
Alternatively; team up with the other squadrons and agree that no one wins. Since the terms were 'winning squadron', testing gets delayed enough for the previous plan to be put into place.
>>
>>27518436
>>27518403
IIRC there was an X-Wing variant that tried ditching the astromech in place of a computer. It was scrapped because it was too vulnerable to sabotage since there was no astromech to protect it.
>>
>>27518436
Well, sure, it'll be a shit fighter, but it's supposedly cheaper, got allegedly better EW capabilities, the fighter's supposedly stealthier... and more to the point, it's a *joint* project, so it's got the Hapans, SoroSuub, the Verpine, etc. all backing it. Frickin' politics. Then again, thing about politics is that it's run by politicians, and politicians are always doing dumb shit.
You probably won't get anything close to accurate schematics, but instead whatever bullshit numbers they're throwing at it. Not without setting up and calling in some favors, anyway.

Finally, you can't throw the exercise the second go-around. They're threatening to promote Wedge into a non-flying job - and losing (or not winning) an exercise twice in a row would be as good an excuse as any.
>>
>>27518597
Petition Incom for support. Then test the fighter against fellow Rogues in X-wings. If the new fighters have their uses, commission a few in Rogue colors but keep X-wings as the workhorse. Even when E-wings came in as the standard, the Rogues stuck by their X-wings.
>>
>>27518504
What'd I tell yah?
>>27518597

"Janson." "Yeah, Boss?" "Get me accurate schematics of that hunk of scrap they're foisting on us. Better, get me as many prototypes as you can."

The only thing that really pissed me off about Star by Star was that they had spent like the entire series up to that point building up Anakin Solo, and then he dies two thirds of the way into the book. The majority of the books after that were pretty good, save maybe the one where Jania has her brush with the dark side. I fucking loved the final battle in Destiny's Way though, I started laughing hysterically when the narrative went back to the NR transports that had fled into hyperspace two minutes into the battle, and is all "So yeah, those ships you probably forgot about five chapters ago? They drop out of hyperspace and start laying ALLLLLLLL THHHHHHEEEEE MIIIIINNNNNEEESSS."

Basically TL;DR, one of Luke's old Jedi students went full Space Hitler when his folks were wiped out by a repressive regime, did some ethnic cleansing on them, then bought out a droid manufacturer with the old regimes looted treasury. He then deliberately underbid on a part supply contract when the NR started going around asking electronics manufacturer's for quotes on the new X-wing's computer systems. And every computer and droid built for the NR had a bomb built into it, the plan was basically to blow up two thirds of the New Republic's fighter fleet and every gunnery and engineering droid on every capital ship in the fleet at the same time. At least if I remember correctly. Really the only notable parts of that book were Wedge mindfucking some droid controlled Star Destroyers, Luke goddamn Skywalker nearly losing a lightsaber duel with the student, who probably has been using a lightsaber for less then two years at that point, and a bunch of military droids getting torn apart by a sea of enraged astromech droids.

Star Wars EU that's worth reading, in no particular order:
Both Han Solo trilogies
X-Wing books (though Stackpole's last book in the series was kinda blah)
Traitor, from the NJO books. I don't know for sure how much context you'd need from the rest of NJO, but it's a great book.
Thrawn Trilogy, and Spectre of the Past/Vision of the Future
Revenge of the Sith novelization (seriously, it was really well done)
Labyrinth of Evil (same guy who did the Episode III novelization)
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter
Shatterpoint
Shadows of the Empire

Might be worth reading:
NJO, especially from Destiny's Way on.
Lando trilogy
The Truce at Bakura
Black Fleet Crisis?? (more 'professional' take on the New Republic military, a bit bland, but it's at least competently written, doesn't feature Imperial Superweapon or Luke goes bad or other shitty cliches, and it does feature awesome Wookies; there's also a subplot involving Lando, Lobot, Artoo and Threepio on a ghost ship called the Teljkon Vagabond that I kinda remember liking as a kid).
I, Jedi?? (if you don't mind Corran Horn from Stackpole's X-Wing books, this is kinda fun; otherwise, don't bother)
>>
>>27519458
I already read most of your list. And if Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter is about a dude who's finds out about Maul and investigates, then I read that one too.

The squadron's support ship suffers a failure in its primary hyperdrive and they stop in an uncharted system to effect repairs on the nearest planet. The planet is actually a secret automated droid foundry dating back to the Clone Wars. It is also slowly coming back online the more the pilots fuck about on the surface. Can the pilots hold out against thousands and thousands of battle droids long enough to get the freighter's hyperdrive fixed?
>>
One last bump for mission ideas.
>>
More of a wraith squadron-type mission, but could work for either: Tiger team!
The squadron (or perhaps just elements of the squadron) has taken a good deal of damage, and has put in at a major repair facility. While you're there, you're asked to serve as a 'tiger team' - probing the security measures of the facility to find (and shore up) the holes in their nets. During your probes, however, you find evidence that leads you to suspect that there's corruption or espionage or something like that going on, and the base commander seems deeply involved. So why'd she have you do the tiger team tests in the first place? And with your fighters' hyperdrives needing to be completely overhauled, you're not necessarily going anywhere, so you've got time to investigate things.
>>
>>27527832
