R8 this character sheet I'm making for a homebrew, m8s.

The bubbles by the blanks in the middle section are empty so they can be filled with numbers, and the ones in the Domains section are draw-your-own-symbol.

The sheet is for a game centered around playing gods.
>>
Is "godhead" a spot to enumerate the God Heads a character has collected and what they look like?
>>
>>27455462

>Godhead (n)
>The essential and divine nature of God, regarded abstractly.

Essentially, it's health, or a burnable mega-resource.

Other gods' heads could go there, if you're into that.
>>
Bumping for replies.

I thought /tg/ liked its homebrew character sheets.

The sheet looks nice. But what does everything mean on it? What is the game all about? How does the game work and how does it relate to the sheet?
>>
Well I like it. It's not cramped-looking or hideously bland. It seems to get all the info you need on display without there being an information overload.

If you added some decorative stuff it might improve it, or it might not - you've already got some visual variety in there. If there are any themes or symbols or whatever that could easily be evoked without cramping up the sheet or making it less readable, see if you *can* do that, but don't worry if you can't.
>>
I think it's really nice! You've done well, OP.

Really want to see your homebrew. Looks good.
>>
One thing I will say is that many character sheets I see have notes to them that are like little reminders on how to derive the number needed for that particular slot. Other char sheets even have a very bland rundown of the chargen rules, at the bottom of the page, for quick and dirty character draw ups.

You could look into something like that. It helps to give a clue as to what the numbers even mean.

The blanks in the top section are mostly aesthetic choices that don't effect the crunch, but give you a rough idea of what your god looks/acts like. The Appearance blanks are all filled with vague things like "Young" or "Wings" or "Reptilian" or "Mechanical," allowing you to sort out the specifics of how those interact on your own.

Your god can perform Acts of God, rated in Tiers 1 to 5 determined by scale, in which they perform an action in some way related to one of the words written down in the Domains section. Your god can essentially do anything related to those words up to and including crashing the entire setting into its sun if you have the Sun domain - they just happen to get more difficult to do as the scale (and Tier) goes up, and other gods may oppose them. The truly monumental things, such as crashing the planet into the sun, require the expenditure of a Godhead in addition to the roll, thus weakening your god but allowing you to achieve the impossible.

The middle section is most of the crunch of the game - by Playing to Type, or acting as the words placed in the blanks in the middle section would indicate your god should act, your god gains Potence equal to the number in the circle adjacent to the word. Certain personality traits or goals are more important than others to your god, and thus have larger numbers. Potence can, in turn, be burned to make your own Acts of God easier, or to make the Acts of God of your fellow gods harder. All ten Potence can be burned at once to restore one Godhead, so your god literally heals through roleplaying.

The object of the game varies on the session - I've played a few games so far, one of which involved making an entire D&D setting from whole cloth, another which involved revitalizing a dying world, and a much simpler one involving the gods competing for the most followers in a small town-sized area.

It's clearly the base of a corinthian column, though - that immediately evokes greece, and with the name and the tagline added in, I don't tihnk it's very christian at all. A "whoops, we don't want D&D so we have to make the christian alternative" game would not advertise as being of divine proportion because they'd want to be more humble towards god.

I suppose it was the fonts that took me off guard. In any case, I like how you put together the manual. Easy to read, easy to follow, and the shade of blue you use in the tables is smart. Bright, but not obnoxious, gets your attention where it needs to go.

I think you need to add an example game from start to finish in order to show what your system can be used for. I'm personally seeing this system combined with Dawn of Worlds-style gameplay to make an interesting game.

Oh, yes, please. I'm off to make dinner, but I would certainly love to come back to this. Good times were had all around.

I agree. It's a nicely laid out document, and that means a huge amount. I recently backed the cortex hacker's guide PDF, and was pleased to receive the preview drafts. However, I stopped reading them because they were unformatted drafts, and really blodoy hard to read for it.

An example game would be cool - once it's done. At the moment, OP hasn't finished writing up the system document. He didn't come here with the system, he came with the character sheet, and showed us the system because we asked.

It's difficult to rate a character sheet when you don't know the system. The system tells you what is important and what is not. The sheet has to reflect this. Exalted's character sheets are positively awful, with very little room to write things that need many words (like your name, Motivation, and Charms), and with some things completely absent from the sheet for no discernible reason than they ran out of space and felt limited to one sheet.
>>
>>27457213
True. Though this does look to be a fairly simple system, judging by the sheet. There's not the huge amount of info you get on an Eoris sheet. It's not a "fantasy heartbreaker" with a multitude of unnecessary things that come from trying to reinvent D&D, either.

Also, OP: The skull design doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the stuff. I can't exaplain exactly why but it just doesn't seem to gel with the rest of the aesthetic.

>example game

I'm re-writing a text example I wrote from a previous version, and updating the mechanics. It was something I had to do eventually, anyway, and I'm posting the individual examples as I re-write them.

>If you have Domain over Luck and you want to create a rainbow over a city-sized area to attract adventurers lucky enough to see it to a pot of gold, you would tell your GM and your group that such is your divine will. Your GM would announce it to be a Tier III Act of God and that, because of this, you’d need to beat 10 on your roll for it to happen.

>Now, understandably, you really want that rainbow to happen - it is a rainbow, after all, and those adventurers are going to be pretty thrilled to find a chest full of gold coins, even if each coin is emblazoned with the smiling, winking face of your deity. So you tell the DM that you’re going to spend 1 Potence to ensure the effect happens, One or two Potence may be spent in this way, and each one adds an extra d20 to the Act of God roll.

>Potence adds dice to the roll for each point spent, so instead of just having 1d20 and trying to beat 10, you’re now rolling 2d20, taking the best of the two dice, and trying to beat 10. Obviously this is much easier to accomplish than the original roll - Potence helps you accomplish what would normally be difficult or almost impossible for even your divine will to enforce.

>So you pick up your two d20s and roll: a 5 and 12! The 12 is above and beyond the 10 you needed to succeed on the roll, and thus you have your rainbow and your pot of gold. The rest of the players, having declined their option to attempt to unmake your beautiful rainbow, acknowledging its rightful place in the world.

>And just like that, congratulations! You have completed your first Act of God.
>>
>>27457485

John, playing as the Great Flendoffal, Lord-Protector of Madness and Luck, has carefully crafted a rainbow to a magical pot of gold, as in the previous example.

You are playing as the dread many-armed Gormogg the Black, with domain over Darkness and Tyranny, and you cannot allow this rainbow to exist within your dominion.

John successfully conjures his rainbow, much to Gormogg’s chagrin, and as the GM asks if anyone wishes to counteract the Great Flendoffal’s actions, you speak up. Gormogg has concocted an evil plan to counteract Great Flendoffal’s growing influence, and you aim to set it in motion.

You tell the GM your plan: weaving Darkness and Tyranny, an enormous iron fist will descend from the sky, grasp the rainbow, and strangle the very life from it, cancelling the effect as it happens and blanketing the land in darkness.

The GM agrees acknowledges your intent to oppose John’s Act of God, and so the two of you enter into a Bid for Supremacy. You declare a specific amount of Potence points, 2 in this case, and bid them against John completing his action. John bids 3, you bid an additional 4 (bringing your expended Potence to 6), and John has no more Potence to bid and cannot beat your 6. Both of you expend your declared Potence, and John’s Act of God is blocked by your iron fist. John must now roll 2d20 and take the worst of the two die - an almost certain failure! John rolls a 19 and a 5, and does not beat his needed threshold of 10. You crush his rainbow in your iron fist, and darkness reigns supreme.

Nice stuff.

However, I was looking at the rules again, and I don't see a way to regenerate Potence other than spending a Godhead for 10 Potence. And there's no way of regenerating Godheads unless you spend 10 Potence for 1. Ultimately, there doesn't seem to be an incentive to use Potence, as the use of it will eventually kill off your God, despite the Potence-Godhood switcheroo.

I'm sure the GM will award Potence/Godhood at certain intervals of the game. Maybe that ought to be included in the manual at some point. But otherwise, I like where this is going.

Also, this picture will be my God. Until his Godhood is forcefully extricated by the crushing grip of the God of Giants.

Not OP, but you can regenerate Potence by Playing To Type. By roleplaying the characteristics in the middle of the sheet, the GM will say "yes, you have Played To Type for these things". You then gain potence equal to the number in the little bubble. (If you play to a bunch of types at once - for example, if I'm playing a Whimsical and Bloodthirsty deity and I randomly decide I don't like Joe's god, so I send my followers to slaughter his) - you can regain a bunch of potence at once.

Rolled for character creation. I'm the Father of Gods, recently awoken from a long slumber with few worshipers. I'm gruff, but persistent in trying to restore order among my wayward children. Also with the last one I have golden bracelets that chart the movements of stars.

Also, I'm loving this, and hope you post it when you're done, or try to kickstarter it. I think this would be a lot of fun to play.

I'm not sure if I like d20s for this, I feel like you could get the same effect using d6's or the like. But that's something to easily mess around with in playtesting.

Uh... how can I make this work? Stasis makes no sense for a CN, but neither does Maintaining Order. I suppose the closest thing I have is Maintaining Order, as I am a machine after all. And now, time for an interest.

Well this one is a gimme. I will take A Specific Number. 1. I am the god machine, and each of my believers must make themselves their own god machine, for in the end they will become part of me and truly become one with me. This is getting chilling. Next up, the greatest flaw.
>>
Rolled 1, 4 = 5

>>27466187
Again, wat? I suppose I will take Quick to Anger. Though I advocate personal freedom, it is for the purpose of my followers learning as much as they can about the universe around them and feeding that knowledge to me once I annex their souls into the machine. Should one stray from that grand design, I will likely turn on them, trying to delete them like the annoying error it is. Finally, domains.
>>
Rolled 9, 18 = 27

>>27466235
Ooookay? I suppose I will take Stars (1), as my shaping of them will assist my followers, allowing them to explore and discover while maintaining the sort of order that I need to achieve my goals. And to go with the stars, I will take Light (4), though more in a metaphysical sense than literal. My light is that of discovery and of freedom, my light being the greatest of them all, despite being held behind a cold, metallic shell.

Now to work out my character sheet. May be a while.

OP here - I never considered a dev blog for this, but it might make a lot of sense. In any case, I'll definitely be posting more of this on /tg/ as the game progresses, and I'm really glad you elegan/tg/entlemen enjoy what I've got so far.

My players say the larger world-building version of the game plays out a lot like a pen-and-paper Civilization, and every game we've played thus far has been a fun one. It tends to be a very player-driven game (for obvious reasons), and I'm also in the midst of working on an events system to reduce the GM bandwidth the game requires.

Pic related is the final map of the most recent world my players have created, which started out as a single city set alone in a vast desert on a dying world, and is now populated by one magitech, one philosophical, and one high magical society, all extremely idealistic in their own ways, in a perpetual state of almost-war with each other, occasionally united only by the threat of lizardmen and dragons burrowing through the center of the earth to wipe out all legitimate surface civilization.

The surface of the world is also now nearly-entirely covered by an impossibly magical forest, home to all sorts of hidden, nasty creatures and magical beasts from forgotten eons. My players how now rolled up characters in D&D Next, and have just started a game in this world they've created.

>char gen chapter should just be called Genesis, not all gods are born of virgins. In fact the way you describe it, sounds more like creatio ex nihilo
This. I swear there's a Gnostic term for "self-creation" or somesuch but I cannot for the life of me find or remember it.

>your combination random/point buy system punishes people for having a clear idea of the character they want. Better to have random and point-buy as equal options.
Correction: punishes people for insisting on playing the idea in their head rather than what the dice generate. I would actually go further in this direction and charge, not for picking a new line on the chart, but for moving up and down on the chart. (But also make sure adjacent lines on charts are thematically dissimilar, so that someone who's legitimately just trying to smooth out an ill-fitting god doesn't have to pay out the nose to do it.)

>Alignment? Is this a game, or a D&D expansion?
Heh. You might want a few words about when you would want to consider alignment a fundamental part of the god versus when to consider it just a rough guideline in the god's design. (If, as you imply in >>27466718, you're partially using this as a tool to generate interesting D&D settings, alignment makes perfect sense as a thing to have.)

>I don't think you need to be so encylopedic in your description section.
Well, it helped me. (I should post what I made. I think I will, later.)
>>
>>27466580
>char gen chapter should just be called Genesis

Noted, will fix.

>your combination random/point buy system punishes people for having a clear idea of the character they want.

That's kind of the idea. If you have a clear idea of what god you want and plan to make it perfectly that way, logically the Personalities and Goals and such will work together with better synergy to gen you more Potence throughout the game. If you rely more on random chance to gen you a god, you'll likely experience much less synergy between traits while Playing to Type, and thus, while you receive higher Potence up front, you'll probably generate marginally less as the game goes on.

That's the theory, anyway, and it's worked well so far. Players tend to relish Playing to Type, though, and Potence usually doesn't stay low for long, even if you start with zero.

>Alignment? Is this a game, or a D&D expansion?

Shhhh. I like it. And with gods that operate on a mythological scale, it often makes sense where it wouldn't with mortals. You can point to many real-world mythological gods and say "yeah, that guy is clearly written LG" or CN or LN or TN, while it's much harder to do that with real-world historical figures.

Besides, Unaligned is there for if you absolutely hate the idea.

>I don't think you need to be so encylopedic in your description section.

Probably not, but that's a job for editing later on down the line. When I was penning that up, I'd rather err on the side of side of giving too much information than having my players think that "Wings" means only "angel wings," which was something that came up.

>I like the personality grid thing. Have you read the Pendragon rpg?

I have not. I'll see if I can't download the PDF.

Autogenesis may be a better term. It may well be the gnostic term that >>27466841 was trying to remember. I googled a bit, but damn gnostic dictionaries are difficult to get into.

Genesis on its own, while entirely fitting, will remind most readers of the bible before anything else.

>>27466955
>Genesis on its own, while entirely fitting, will remind most readers of the bible before anything else.

Yeah, that's roughly what kept me away from using it. In a game based on playing gods, I want to avoid being Bible-centric, as that really can destroy the mood and feel.

"Autogenesis" doesn't sound quite right, either, nor is it entirely accurate. It's something I get to play around with, at any rate.

This looks really cool OP, would love to play! A quick thought though.

>The god you create here could, if you so choose, easily stand astride the likes of Jupiter, Athena, Odin, Isis, Quetzalcoatl, Shiva, or even YHWH or Allah[...]

I would argue that it shouldn't be YHWH *or* Allah, but YHWH *and* Allah. Muslims worship the same abrahamitic god as christians and jews. Allah is just the arabic name for that deity. It's a minor, nit-picking ting I know, but yeah.

The oceans themselves are the lady's domain. Stretching as far as the eye can see from every shore, the Lady has dominion over all the waters. And even the water of life that flows within all, that too is the domain of the Lady of the ocean. All of life requires water, and the Lady freely gives it

Doesn't seen Elder God to me. Elder gods don't care about human aims. They basically cannot interface with us. This god is far more unsettling as something that we can understand.

Torment and Knowledge? Unknown origins? Unknown aims? Some truths are better unlearned.

MORTAL, YOU HAVE DISPLEASED ME.
TREMBLE BEFORE ME, FOR I SHALL NOT KILL YOU.
FROM MY LIPLESS LIPS SHALL RING OUT TRUTH.
FROM MY DRY FANGS DRIP THE POISON OF LOGOS.
YOU CANNOT UN-RING THE BELL.
YOU CANNOT UN-SPEAK THE WORDS.
YOU CANNOT UN-LEARN THE TRUTH.
DEATH IS FLEETING.
KNOWLEDGE IS ETERNAL.
WHAT IS TRUE IS NOT WHAT IS GOOD.
WHAT IS REAL IS NOT WHAT IS PURE.
WHAT IS SPOKEN IS NOT WHAT YOU DESIRE.
I SHALL IMPART UNTO YOU THE WEIGHTLESS BURDEN OF KNOWING.

Aims, right. The goals. That's the confusing part. He wants Protection and his Followers' Submission (or Happiness?).

He also dabbles in warfare. That I do understand. Survivor's guilt and PTSD to the max.

THERE CAN BE NO TRUE PEACE AMONG MEN WHILE I SPEAK
THUS, I AM OPPOSED ETERNALLY

THUS, I AM REQUIRED ETERNALLY

The Book of Persephone

We are the essence of life. Throughout the ages, We have been known by many names and in many forms. In this time and this place, it must suffice that We are Persephone. And in that name shall you find the Great Healer, who mends the ills of the flesh and cleanses the blemishes of the soul. And you shall come to know We have always stood beside you, in forms more familiar: The beauty and purity of the maiden is Our reflection. The comforting bosom of the mother flows from Us. The wisdom of the matriarch is but a shadow of Our own. Yea, We are the very essence of life.

Our vision is one of peace. Our path, of mercy. We see—as you must also—how those who do not follow Us have been deceived or corrupted by the forces of wickedness. Thus, in their weakness, have they been lured into an existence of treachery and debasement. We weep for them, knowing there is no greater sin against oneself than the failure to believe in one’s own worth. And there is no greater sin against Us than the failure to stand by Our side in righteousness.

Learn from their failure and do not fear to seek the greatness within yourself. For even as We are justice, you, as Our servant, must strive to be justice incarnate. So shall you find within yourself a greater good and a greater might than would even have touched your dreams ere now. We promise that in the pursuit of justice shall you find peace within yourself.

Lo, and behold, even as Our teachings grant inner harmony, Our realms are a paragon of outer tranquility. Our lands are the rolling, verdant plains and sweet, sheltering forests of Elysium. These are the most resplendent and glorious realms in all the world, and Our creatures the most joyous and content. For all who follow Us, whether of mean birth or noble nature, share in the blessings of Our grace, and thus are the mighty instructed in Our love of humility. Indeed, the devout Fyllid, who provide Druids and Rangers to tend our sacred groves, hold themselves not above the beasts of the field or the simple peasants who each day glory in Our divine mercy.

What, then, shall be your role, in Our grand design? Dare you choose to be a hero, to be an agent of justice? Or shall you fade into the obscurity, self-loathing and emptiness of a life unfulfilled? ‘Tis common enough, if you seek an excuse for mediocrity. Innumerable are the souls who shrink from the call of destiny and shirk the mantle of greatness. Can you not see how meager and lowly are the forces which drive them astray? Fear, doubt, sloth, temerity. Are any of these a worthy match for that which you strive to be… that which you can and should be? We shall guide you down the true path if you so desire, and you shall possess power overwhelming, and Our covenant with you shall be as simple and strong as it is pure:

Love Us and We shall requite your love a hundred-fold.
Defy Us and that day you shall surely die.
The choice is yours.

Looks good, OP! Two things that stand out specifically...

The random alignment thing is interesting... but in all seriousness, if you're going to give us a chart with 10 options, and roll a d10 to choose between them, you might at least present 10 DIFFERENT options, instead of 5. Off the top of my head, I'd patch it by making 6-10 opposite-pairs, instead of offset pairs; so CN/LN, LE/CG, NE/NG, CE/LG, UN/TN.

Success rates seem like they could use some attention. Specifically, using a Tier V Act offensively is statistically foolish, unless backed by Potence; you're more likely to fail than succeed. Of course, it does seem to follow that high-level combats are all about spending Potence. You might want to clarify when you get to add dice / reroll with potence... if I roll 1d20 and fail, can I pick 'add a d20' next, and then reroll both if I fail again? Similarly, why would I ever burn Godhead on lowering the DC of an Act instead of burning it for Potence and using that Potence to roll 3d20 up to 3 times instead? That would both be cheaper and more likely to work.

Regarding the 'divine items' bit... they should probably have some kind of beneficial effect. It should be a double-edged sword, though... you might snag a small advantage here and there by relying on an artifact... at the cost of making that artifact an ever-increasing vulnerability, based on how much you rely on it.

He is our caretaker and therefore greatest among masters for who dares to oppose that force which moves the very foundations of existence. Time and Fate, that which even gods most bow to. Never stopping, never resting, Chu'pack, The Eternal, pushes and rolls and forces the our ever growing universe forward. Every eon, millennia, century, decade, year, month, week, day, hour, minute and second that passes is by his eternal will and struggle. And every passing second adds to his load. But The Great Beetle persists, because he must, for if he should stop his immortal endevour, paus for but a moment, time, the cosmos and Everything that we know would come to an end. So to lighten his burden, ease his eternal charge we sing his songs while we work and pray and love and grieve and fight and sin and live, for what are we all, if not children to his persistence?

Most gods aren't self-created either, tho. In fact I can only think of one who was, Ptah.

I originally suggested Genesis preciesly because of the biblical association, but if you want to avoid that then, following Hesiod, Theogony is the usual term for the story of the origin of the gods.

Once upon a time, long before the world we know came about, there lived a mighty king.

The king valued knowledge above all else. Over the years, he created a personal library unmatched even to this day. His desire for knowledge was rooted so deeply within him that it became all he cared about. His scribes and priests worked night and day for him, and the commoners' pleas went unheard.
Though the king was intelligent, he was not benevolent. He saw the people he ruled with nothing but disdain and despised them for their ignorance. Each day his hatred grew stronger until apathy encompassed him. He stayed inside and read his books, leaving the people to govern themselves.

One fateful day, the townsfolk revolted. They stormed the castle, kidnapped the king, and took him to town square to be burnt alive for his wrongdoings.

As he burned, he screamed until his lungs bled. Not of fear or pain, but absolute hatred. Some say that if you visit the kingdom's ruins, you can still hear his screams in the wind...

Though the king died, his hatred lived on. The boiling pitch of his fury was all that remained of his soul, floating through the nothingness of null space, growing and festering with the years. His desire for knowledge remained, though. Glowing eyes drift through him, searching for knowledge long gone. It has been so long since his name was uttered that even he has forgotten, so he chooses to go by the constant, whispering creak of his palpable hate.

Uuuuuuuuuuur...

Each day, the Sea of Eyes waits. It listens to the whispers of its followers, its liquid tendrils seeping outward,

and outward,

and outward

until he finds the world that left him behind.

God that was 2edgy.

Pendragon is set in the stories of King Arthur, but it has a very interesting personality system. Each character has ten pairs of virtues/vices, such as greed/generosity, scaled from 1 to 20 with 1 being fully greedy and 20 fully generous. It allows for what you might call "attribute rolls" or "saving throws" that directly target personality, which is a very effective means of getting round the old "but my character wouldn't do that" aspect of using social-type skills on players.

Not really sure it has any use to you, its just your layout reminded me of theirs so I asked if you'd seen it.

Spent 2 Potence to change his Flaw and one Goal, leaving him with 1 MP to be made into a funny hat or something.

"Most Benevolent And High Esteemed Lord Justicar Arod-Xho, Lawmaker, Lawkeeper, Lifetaker and Bringer of the Just and Undiscriminating Death to All" is a petty and minor god of the underworld, but a god none the less. Like so many of his kin, he squabble with the other Lords and view for power in the abyssal hierachy in service of the True God of Death.

He serves as Lawkeeper for his Lord and does so with great pride and seriousness. He knows every law that was ever written and every loophole that can be exploited. He takes it upon him to see to it that The Laws of Kings follow The Laws of Men that follow The Laws of Gods that follows The Laws of All That Is and that the chain remains unbroken and unchallenged. In his works he could be seen as just or cruel, depending on the written laws. But The High Justicar of The Abyss himself, is not a just creature.

His wickedness, perversion and baseness leaks of him and befouls everything he touches with a thick oil. He holds beautiful mortals in high esteem and many are the fair young girls and boys that have been invited to his court and forced into his endless harem for not reading the fine print or breaking one of the many, labyrinth-like Laws of his domain. Arod-Xho stands tall, with several arms holding rolls of paper and quills that constantly transcribe and convert laws into his great Book of Laws, an item he always carries with him. His head is that of a sickly, mottled bird with eyes that constantly dart between his works and what he deems worthy of his attention.

So here's what I rolled for my Deity, /tg/. (All glory and honor to Random.org, may its bias ever be minimal.)

> Alignment CN/TN

That's a pretty specific slice. We'll take it at face value, assume "N leaning CN" or CN leaning N" for now. We can pin down one of the two specifically later, if the resultant choices are particularly appealing.

> Origin: Unknown/Other

Well, hell. That's annoyingly vague. Guess we'll have to keep rolling to find out what we're like.

> Appearance:
> • Amorphous / Monstrous
> • Slimy / Liquid
> • Avian / Winged

Monstrous and Slimy go together well... but so do Amorphous and Liquid. But how do I work in wings, in any case?
> Liquid - your god can be made up of ... liquid metal.
SOLD. Our visual appearance is that of a thousand feathered wings of mercury, shifting constantly about an unfixed center. Like a quicksilver Proginoskes, if you know the reference, although there are probably no visible eyes.

(This pushes us towards the CN end of the N-CN scale, incidentally.)

> Personality:
> • Mocking / Jocular
> • Arrogant / Prideful
> • Calculating / Impulsive

Well. The alignment informs us that he's probably Impulsive rather than Calculating. This is the part where I start making unhappy faces, because so far these results describe a perfectly coherent character, and it's the sort of character I really don't like playing or playing with.

(After the fact, of course, I realize that all is well and functioning as intended. From a Watsonian perspective, I'm making a mythological deity here: they're supposed to be utterly childish dicks sometimes. From a Doylist perspective, the game *is* supposed to be at least partially PvP.)

So: a Mocking, Arrogant, and Impulsive doubly-mercurial ball of wings. With some worries, we press on.

(Pic sort-of related; I can't find anything better.)

> Goals:
> • Recognition / Gaining Power
> • Vengeance / Protection

Hmm. Not sure about either of these. Hold off on marking either one, yet...

> Interests:
> • Knowledge / Science

The implications of "Science" are a little too Orderly for Featherface, but Knowledge could reasonably work. It still pushes him a little Neutral-ward, but not too far.

> Greatest Flaw:
> • Theatrical / Attention-seeking

Well. Given "Arrogant/Prideful", above, that almost certainly calls for "Attention-seeking". It would fit well with "Recognition" as a goal, so we'll set those two, and pick "Prideful" as being slightly more cohesive. Might as well select "Vengeance", and implicitly specify "on those who have mocked him or slighted his abilities", although it doesn't really seem to fit.

...

Oh wait.

Oh waiiiiiit.

For interests, "Knowledge" is now switched back to "Science".

BY ME, I'LL SHOW THEM. I'LL SHOW THEM ALL.

So there we go, /tg/. Featherface is a doubly-mercurial ball-of-wings deity who is also a stereotypical classical mad scientist.

This is probably about the time to name him something other than "Featherface". "Mercury" comes to mind as appropriate -- not directly for the classical messenger deity, but because I keep calling him "doubly-mercurial". In-universe, the name of the element and the metaphorical meaning of "mercurial" could be derived from this deity, rather than Mr. Trismegistus. But no; that's too cheap.

Instead, we go to the old fallback of repeatedly truncated keyboard gibberish! This yields "Csaasoth". (Presumably X-SAMPA /"ksa:.sOT/ or /"ksA.A'sOt_h/ or something.) Well, that'll do. Drop the first "s" if you have trouble pronouncing it.

Anyway, it's domains time!

> Domains:
> • Knowledge/Science
> • Luck/Fate

Well! We're LUCKy enough to get a domain matching our interest, so we take that one and luck. (And luck is also more a more Chaotic concept than fate by default, if you prefer.) Hey presto! That was easy.

> Potence and Mod Points:
If I'd known about these when I started, I would probably have planned to change Vengeance to something else. Wouldn't that have been a shame! Instead, I spend zero Potence on MP. (An extra domain might be nice, but even one fixed panoply-object seems out of place for a mutable deity, let alone three. If anyone wants to steal my stuff, they can tell me-the-player, and I'll make up something for them to steal.)

I think I'm required to spend 10 Potence on an extra point of Godhead -- although I'm not sure how many GH I start off with, or what happens if I somehow get more than five in play.

In summation, character sheet attached, and you were hardly using any of those dwarves OR parakeets anyway, why are you complaining? Look, I even made them better! Well, mostly better. It's a work in progress, dammit, give me a couple of centuries.

Origin: Underworld
Appearance: winged, ever-changing, tentacles

Goals: Hedonism, enforce rigid code of conduct

Personality: meticulous, manipulative, righteous

Interest: Justice

Flaw: Overindulgent

Domains: freedom, secrets, strength, storm

Played as a self-righteous, but (not so)secretly perverted. By the end I had a city full of mafiosi changelings with Goliath enforcers worshiping me. Plus I had met a dragon-god and sired several demigod children, some of whom may show up as final bosses in our subsequent D&D campaign.

It is through manipulation of aether particles that magic is possible and it is the aether force that facilitates the flow of time.
---Aethereus desires his followers happiness above all else, but mortals of seldom understand that which is in the best interest; Aethereus' machinations are always for the greater good of his followers, but they often lead to sadness or anger in his followers, which depresses the shit out of him.
---Due to his ultimate goal of bettering his followers lives, he must often lie to them and his fellow gods or keep secrets from them and hope that they trust in his judgement.
---Aethereus is known for buckling under the pressure of his followers demands for what they want, even if giving them what they want is directly opposed to what is in their best interest.
---1 point left over from changing domain: he is shrouded in a thick cloud of steam, making it impossible to view him in his entirety.

All gods start with 10 Potence, which can be converted into Mod Points in the appropriate stage of chargen at a rate of 1 Potence to 5 MP. Unspent MP can be transitioned back into Potence if you have at least 5 of them, but any spare MP become your Accessory/"Fancy Hat" points.

>All gods start with 16 points of Potence, which can be used to enhance Acts of God in - play (detailed in the section of the same name). During character creation, however, any one point of Potence that you start with can be expended to gain 5 Modification Points, the shorthand for which is Mod Points or MP.

His mother had always told him not to taunt the cattle. She had warned him about the dangers of the enraged bull, of the stampede that would kill even grown men, yet the child continued regardless.

He had done this many times before, sneaking up behind the large mammals, creeping ever closer, before letting out a huge yell and startling the beasts, causing them to flee in a panic. It amused the child greatly, and was one of his favorite past times...not that there was much to do this far out in the countryside.

The child approached the beast quietly, cupping his hands around his mouth in preparation for the yell all ready beginning to rise in his throat. It was too late to stop as the child saw the horns, far too large for a cow...

The bull turned as the child screamed, not as a taunt, but in fright. The startled bull however did not care for this difference. With a mighty swing of its head, it sent the child soaring through the air, landing roughly on the ground. The child's mother had heard her child's scream, and rushed out of their home, ready to berate him for being so stupid...until she saw her baby bleeding on the ground.

The child had been lucky, the horns had grazed him but the wound was not deep. The impact however, had winded him, and the child could do nothing as the Bull set upon him, intent on trampling the creature that had embarrassed it.

The Mother was too far, she could not reach her child in time, her screams did not distract the bull, her pleads had not effect on the beast. So she did something that she had not done since she herself was a child. She prayed.

She begged, pleaded, offered her own life in exchange for her child's safety, tearfully screaming at the Gods to save her son. But none answered.

Except one.

Tears staining her face, her voice hoarse from screaming, the mother could only watch as the Bull leaped atop the son, letting out a billowy moan in annoyance as it set about trampling the child...
>>
>>27480554

Until the child fought back.

The mother watched in amazement as her child caught the legs of the beast, stopping it mid-stampede. Both the child, the mother, and the bull, all froze in surprise for the briefest of moments...before the child hurled the beast aside, slamming it into the dirt. Stunned as much as a beast can be by this turn of events, its ego bruised and it's legs injured, the bull limped away to lick its wounds.

The mother ran faster than she had ever run before grabbing her child in a tight hug, holding him close...before letting go and beginning to berate him through tears of joy for being so stupid. The son only stared at his hands, his newfound strength dissipating as quickly as it had appeared.

It was at this moment that their savior revealed himself. An unassuming, middle-aged man with burning eyes strode across the field, appearing apparently from nowhere. The mother gasped at this figure, and almost immediately held her child tight, eyeing this stranger with a mixture of gratitude and suspicion.
>>
>>27480691

Only when he was near enough to see his features. Skin aged like oak from years of farm work, premature-age lines etched into his face, a tough build...this creature was the spitting image of her late husband, only his eyes, which now burned like the sun itself, told her that he was not.

She fell to her knees in awe, thanking the figure profusely, asking what she could do to return the favor...

The figure simply looked at her, and smiled. In a voice that had the power to level mountains, it said to her. "You have done enough, thank you."

You see, this God had not simply chosen to reveal himself at that moment, nor was his resemblance to her husband a coincidence.

No, for you see, her pleas were so great, her pain so strong, her need to believe so powerful that without realizing, she alone had created a God. A God who would protect her child, who would ensure their safety. A God with the strength to fight off the dangers that would threaten what remained of her family.

This is the great secret of Iridius, the God born from the pleas of a single mortal.

Alpha tester here. Strongly, strongly encourage you (and everyone else rolling up gods) to burn some of your potence to fill out your domains. Pick ones that seem appropriate to the deity (even though it means burning an extra MP).

Not only does this make for a more interesting god, but it also lets you do a ton more things in the game. I had a god of Arcana and Storm, and I ended up rolling Tyranny and Battle in addition to those. Instead of being the god of magic and tornadoes, I became the God of Order, Creator of a race whose primary purpose was the subjugation of the world under the heels of those who knew the power and purpose of magic. I created Temples of My Four Aspects, at which My worshipers would gain mastery over that Aspect. My forces spread throughout the world in a war that lasted an age and existed on both the mortal and divine planes. My soldiers, empowered by My Blessings of strength and arcane might, annihilated millions in their conquest - primarily a second race, Chosen of a Deity who had sworn my enmity for all time and Blessed with swift reproduction. And when a Titan from outside the realm of the Gods' understanding began its siege on My World, a siege the other gods, in their fear of losing their own power, failed to respond to, I Alone began the Great Binding to seal it and its kind away from My Domain. Only then did the other gods, sensing a safe method to ensure their survival, contribute to my Final Act, fortifying My Seal for all Eternity and ensuring it would not falter against the lesser minions of the titans, nor any other threats they could think of.
>>
Rolled 26

>>27481318

I have died. My name does not live on. My temples are in ruins, and the artifacts I gave to my people have been lost. Between My Death and the intervention of other deities, My Elves have declined from their Golden Age to an Age of Hopelessness. My Dwarves are tied more to a hero-god of my creation than to My Self. The orcs I opportunistically gave My Blessings to have been all but eradicated. But My Work lives on.

Now, thousands of years later, a single Elf journeys across My World in search of My Lost Temples and My Holy Artifacts, inspired by My Prophet. Whether he will forsake his primitive roots, reestablish My Army, and continue My Work, I do not know. If he does, I do not know what will happen to me. But My Elves have never failed me, and My Work must be done.

still should add some fields for potence to the sheet, methinks... You know, for the ocassional guy who just fixes his god with one potence and has good synergies, so he gets five potence with his first Act of God, or somethin like that... Or is ten the absolute maximum anyway? PDF doesnt say so, but if is wrong about starting potence...
>>
>>27482029

Yeah, the PDF isn't quite in a good-to-go state, as far as rolling up characters unassisted is concerned, thus the all-caps SUPER ALPHA. 10 is the absolute Potence maximum, and any Potence gained over that mark by Playing to Type is lost.

It encourages players to be active, I find, by roleplaying their gods, building up Potence by roleplaying, and then needing to burn it off through Acts of God so they can continue building it up by roleplaying. Keeps the pace of the game up, and keeps wacky player character plans happening.

Well then the God of Fate fucking hates the God of Death. He must find a way to kill or undermine the God of Death for this slight! I dunno I think the territories should have more concrete rules but it fits pretty well in the whole "Gods are assholes to each other" thing.

there it is, the mechanic isnt in the pdf, but I guess it is a must have...
>>
>>27482255

This >>27482648 is roughly how it would play out.

I've noticed three main states of diplomacy between players at the helm of all-powerful gods:

Sometimes, the gods are best of friends, and while occasionally doing things that are against the interests of other gods, more or less get along. I had a group of PCs which I called the "Scooby gang" that functioned like this. They just roved around the world together, riding on the back of a giant manticore that was also a god, solving mysteries and dispensing divine blessings or punishments as they saw fit.

Other times, though, it's a cold war. Everyone knows everyone else can fuck everyone up, and so the players carve out their own territories. People will outright state "if you touch this, shit will get real," and they'll keep to that promise. In this case, the "territories" are defined and enforced by the players. The players generally recognize the rights of each others' Acts to exist, as they wouldn't want everyone else ganging up against them if they start killing off things important to the other gods with impunity.

And then, of course, there's all out fuck-you-guys war, which generally ends with the death of a god or with a strong agreement not to do certain things. As Godhead is very difficult to get back, a fight between gods generally weakens all involved, and most gods without a deathwish try to avoid provoking one.

Using rules to solidify "territories" of gods that other gods cannot interfere in runs contrary to how I want the game to feel - I want there to be the low-hanging fruit of messing with the other gods' divine works, which in turn is a great source of dramatic tension that the GM doesn't have to constantly support.

"Ha ha, Death! Not only is this guy fated to kill the evil king, but YOU'RE now fated to fail to kill HIM! Boom!"
"Alright, then, Fate, if that's how it's going to be: you're dead. Boom."
"Shit."

Even the Death domain is constrained by the Tiers of Acts of God - meaning that the maximum it could do is 3 Godhead worth of damage in a single blow, which is still fairly formidable. Gods don't go down that easy, even to Death.

Ideally, First Light would be played with a minimum of three players, so as to provide an effective counterbalance against complete annihilation. NPC gods could be a good substitute - I'll have to run some few-player playtests to see how that'd work, exactly.
>>
>>27482949
>>27482979
Secretly use your power to help the rightful king rise to power, or the like? Making sure that the people who are meant to be in control stay in control, without being seen to do so?
>>
>>27482859
That's legit. Also, I suppose that as long as you have three or four players you'll have enough gods to keep stalemates from taking up all the time.

Oh, and I suppose you could rule that if two gods try to do opposite things whoever rolls higher wins.

A quick question, there are ways to use powers to do things other powers can do. Eg,
I can use Life, Wildernes, or Time to make something grow. Is this intentional? I think it's a good thing, it widens the playing field for everybody.
>>
Gonna give this thing a shot. Super fun looking game. If this god turns out useful feel free to use him/her as an NPC for your trial run.

I would think that if it came to a "fight" between death and fate over how things play out with this one person, it would come down to whether the act of the death god was strong enough to overcome the fate that the fate god gave the person.

I imagine that with a strong enough act focused on a single person, it would get to the point where even gods couldn't interfere without spending equal or more effort.

That makes me think, what measures are there to prevent a god from just spamming an act below 5 until they succeed (outside of conflict that is)? Do failed acts produce negative progress?

Domains: Tyranny and Madness.

Okay, I think I have a character for this guy. He observes the world and is driven mad by OCD, so he tries to exert his divine control to enforce rigidity upon the world. However, he's not cruel about it. If someone is building a town a few miles too far to the north, he'll have a prophet declare that the farming is better a few miles south and they should all go there. Thus his OCD is satisfied, but no one has to be hurt. Also fulfills the Tyranny aspect. I might have to spend a few points on my personalities though.

Gonna spend 3 Potence to get 15 MP. 6 going to Personality. I'll keep Obsessive, but grab Strict and Gregarious. Those who obey my complex OCD-based Dogmas will be rewarded, those who do not will be punished. Rolling for new Domain.
>>
When designing a God based on the appearance traits rolled for, what are the limitations on it? Like, my god has the "radiant body", "tentacles" and "deathly" appearance traits, and while trying to work out what he would look like, I thought "hey, it would be cool if he had wings/a long, creepy tongue", but then I remembered that "winged" and "prehensile tongue" are both traits on the list, neither of which he has.

I got Wind/Water as my new Domain. I'll go with Water, Wind is too chaotic for my OCD to handle, whereas water follows nice natural laws. I've got one MP to throw around, so I think I'll give myself a highly symmetrical sword. Every Tyrant should have a sword.
>>
>>27483196
Nah I think it'd just shape the world. I mean most things if a God keeps failing at will be a spectacular failure. If you fail to kill a king three times maybe that guy gets some ACTUAL power to stop gods from killing him. I mean if you beat the reaper three times that's impressive.
>>
>>27483046
>I can use Life, Wildernes, or Time to make something grow. Is this intentional?

Absolutely - I agree that it widens the playing field, and gods should be able to do many things by their very nature.

>>27483196

If you want to re-roll an Act of God, you need to spend a Potence for the privilege of doing so. You can do this up to twice for a maximum of three rolls on any one thing before the universe just moves on past your failed attempts.

You could, of course, if you have something like the Time domain, expend another Act of God to rewind time and try your luck again, but you'll run out of Potence to do so eventually. Likely the other gods will become fed up before then anyhow, and start actively opposing your efforts.

>>27483515

You'd probably want to burn a Potence for Mod Points and change some Appearance traits, then. If you're really sold on a visual concept of your god, there's no harm in burning some Potence to make that an actuality.

Appearance traits are intended to define the most iconic things about your god - while your god could appear Deathly if they were Chthonic in Origin without it actually being in the Appearance blanks, the common folk would more readily use the more prominent features described in your actual Appearance slots to spread your legend.

The top section is mostly for fluff anyhow - feel free to visually depict your god as you see fit.
>>
>>27483515
Maybe you only have wings and tongue in some interpretations? Sorta like how Athena is only sometimes Armoured, or Jesus only sometimes has the Halo.

Might as well post the one I rolled up earlier this evening.

Czaiath is the trifold god of Civilization, Order, and Water. That which became Czaiath descended into the universe out of curiosity, wherein it became enamored and bound by it's wonders, especially the songs and fables of mortals. In a local scale game he wanders the earth granting blessings of pure water and uplifting tribes into mighty civilizations. In a galactic game, he does much the same, only he rockets between worlds on great icy comets forged by his power.

Czaiath seeks some manner of worldly or galactic control, largely in the sense of being a protector and guiding hand. This tends to fall into being a secondary goal though: Czaiath loves to have himself and his creations be known. Everything from the smallest statue to the grandest nation are parts of his mark on the universe he so loves, Marks that he hopes will last long after even his godly form is reduced to stardust.

Czaiath's appears as a chitinous humanoid (think Three-Kreen) made of silver metal embossed with the symbols of numerous worlds (or, if just appearing into the world, none at all). The cracks in his carapace reveal strange and alien machinery, the slightest hint of his true nature: This body is but a shell for the true thing that descended, a mask with which it may interact with mortals and gods comprehensibly.

Czaiath is a -4 from the starting potence, for rolling the extra domain of water, direct buying Apperance: Humanoid, Interest: Songs, and switching from LN to Unaligned (too nice to be pure law, but not really fitting to any of the Good Alignments).
The remaining two MP give two treasures: A woven crown of light and shadow, and a jewel that escapes dimensions.

Aaand that's the end of my shitty writfagging. It could have gone almost the exact opposite direction if I had flipped some options in the beginning; Making a LE cthulioid plant-god would have been pretty easy. Might stat that one up later
>>

I'll just have to hope for another one of these threads sometime in the future.

Also I am feeling weird right now because I realized that I named my god similarly to the mad-scientist god upthread.
Goes to show what happens when you make gods while delirious.
