>Technically Jedi Quest 8, but who’s counting?

You are Jedi Apprentice Roa Koo’lade, a thirteen-year-old Zabrak girl. You are under the tutelage of Jedi Master Plo Koon.

And your everything hurts like a thousand wailing bitches. At least your hearing is back.

You and your Master received a mission to investigate reports of hyperdrive sabotage and theft on the shipyard world of Fondor. You boarded the Republic diplomatic cruiser Estrella, captained by a Judicials officer named Gardann, but it was attacked by a pirate corvette not a quarter of the way to Fondor. The ship was boarded and you were captured after a failed attempt to defend the bridge.

Your Master, however, managed to hijack a pirate shuttle and boarded the corvette via DYNAMIC ENTRY to rescue you. You then detected a Force signature somewhere in the ship and followed it to find two Force-sensitive girls, Lili and Hannaca, taken prisoner by the pirates. Master Koon intimidated one of the guards, Grerssk, into helping to protect you and the girls. When pirates began converging on the brig, you led the group away, but in the confusion, Hannaca was wounded and you captured the pirates’ “accountant,” a Twi’lek woman named Ceera.

You hurriedly brought Hannaca to the medical bay, but along the way you encountered the pirate bosun, Reppintar. You and Grerssk drew him away in separate directions. You happened across the ship’s reactor room and after disabling it you tried to return to the medbay. Reppintar intercepted you halfway there.

You blew him to smithereens with a thermal detonator, but you were almost killed in the explosion yourself. You managed to stagger back to the medbay, only for the panicked captain and his bodyguards to follow you back (Master Koon was apparently hunting them down), although you and Ceera managed to take them all down.

“I’m not sure whether to congratulate you or scold you for that insane tactic.”

Your tunic top removed, you lay on the rest bed as the medical droid applies burn salve, disinfectant, and bandages to your various injuries. Lili sits in the space between your bed and the still-comatose Hannaca’s. Master Koon stands with his back to you, arms crossed, watching the door with a twitching Ceera.

The pirate captain and his three lackeys have all been restrained and tossed into an empty storage room. M6 injected them all with tranquilizers to keep them unconscious for the next few hours.

“Didn’t I live, Master?” you say.

“I’ll give you that much, at least,” he concedes. “But there’s a reason we don’t encourage young Jedi to carry out crazy plans. Reality tends to disagree. Forcefully.”

“Master, you crashed a shuttle into another shuttle in the hangar,” you point out, a bit miffed. “How is that not a crazy plan?”

“Ah, but I’m a full Jedi Master, and you are but an Apprentice,” Koon says airily. “I have the ability and the skill to reject the universe’s notions of what reality should be and substitute my own. You’ve yet to learn how.”

“So basically you used the Force to cheat.”

“Exactly.”

Lili clears her throat.

“Master Jedi, if I may ask, how exactly is a Jedi promoted from Apprentice to Knight?” she asks.

“Well, they have to go through the Knight Trials at the end of their apprenticeship,” Koon explains. “My own Padawan just started hers, so she won’t have to worry about her Trials for a good long time.”

“I see,” Lili says. She pauses for a moment. “Judging from her voice, Roa is younger than me and Hannaca. When did she become an Apprentice?”

“Yesterday,” Koon says. “She turned thirteen about a month ago.”

“…oh, my.” The Miraluka’s voice is very, very soft. “I didn’t realize she was that young…”

“In case you’re wondering, both you and Miss Ikerin would be considered too old to receive training as Jedi,” Koon continues. “Roa and I were delivered to the Temple as children. Even the one exception I know of started as a nine-year-old boy.”

That would be young Anakin Skywalker. You recall seeing him sitting alone at a table one day, during breakfast. Everybody his age kept away from him. You felt sorry for him, but not enough to actually do anything about it.

Lili seems to be patient enough that she wouldn’t be bothered by isolation, and she and Hannaca have each other to stave off loneliness. But you saw how she reacted when Ceera shot Hannaca, her rage and fear radiating off her like a dark miasma.

“I’m not concerned about myself,” Lili says. “My people are familiar with Force-sensitivity.”

She looks at Hannaca and you’re reminded that the Miraluka can see through the Force. “I doubt you’ll just let Hannaca go, though.”

“Perhaps we might,” Koon says lightly. “But frankly, it’s not my decision to make; it’s hers and the Council’s.”

You narrow your eyes. “What do you mean by that, Master?”

“He’s no pirate, Padawan,” Koon says. “He’s a Republic agent who infiltrated this ship. And while he is actually a Trandoshan, Grerssk isn’t his real name.”

With a start you remember your original mission to investigate hyperdrive sabotage and theft on Fondor. You’ve almost forgotten about it, from all the blasting and sneaking and running for your life that’s kept you busy for the last hour or so.

“When are we heading for Fondor, Master?” you interject. “We can contact the Council then.”

“I’ve activated the ship’s distress beacon,” Koon says. “This close to a major hyperspace route, another vessel is certain to pick us up within at least a few hours. And considering that you’ve disabled most of the ship’s power, I doubt we’ll be moving anytime soon.”

“Are we going to go after the rest of the pirates?” you ask.

“Hm. Well, that depends on how you’re feeling. I could go alone, of course, but I’m unwilling to risk the crew finding you here. This isn’t exactly an out-of-the-way closet.”

“He did seem a little polite for a pirate, come to think of it. Did he say who he was working for?”

“Republic Intelligence,” Master Koon laughs. “Seriously. I didn’t believe him at first, to tell the truth, not until he gave me his identification codes.”

So everything about the jagannath points, his family’s banishment from Dosha…all of it was probably true, but he was working for the Republic instead of organized crime to earn them back.

“But then how were we blindsided when the Republic had an agent on this ship?” you ask.

“That depends on whether the good captain even knew which ship he was going to attack. From what you’ve told me, Mr. Yinter was told to stop the Estrella at a certain location.”

Lili looks quite out of her depth. “I’m sorry, Masters Jedi. But what are you talking about? Mr. Grerssk works for the government? That makes no sense.”

“Think about it, Miss Stenn,” Master Koon says. “Why would he have dropped everything to help you? Even a pirate can be loyal to his employer, even if that loyalty is enforced through fear. While I was off fighting my way to the bridge, Grerssk had no reason to help you evade his crewmates and guide you to the medbay. No offense to you, Roa, but he could have taken advantage of your inexperience to lead all of you into a trap. But he didn’t. Why is that? Why would he risk his life and position to help you?”

“Because he’s a decent person,” Lili replies.

“Of that, I have no doubt. But the main question here is why he was still here. Intelligence probably sent him to infiltrate this ship—a frigate-class pirate vessel would be quite worrying for the Judicials—but he must have been here for many months to earn enough trust to guard a valuable prisoner. And if he had been here for that amount of time, he should have already gathered enough incriminating evidence to bring an airtight case against this ship.”

Koon pauses. “If I recall correctly, Miss Stenn, the captain of this ship specifically took you hostage over everyone else.”

“Yes, he did,” she says cautiously. “But it is quite obvious that I’m a Miraluka.”

“He may indeed have kidnapped you because of that,” your Master agrees, “And the possible implications of that are ominous. In any case, Grerssk simply may have been lucky enough to stumble upon you two and relayed your presence to his superiors, but then why didn’t Intelligence notify the Jedi? It is commonly agreed that Force-sensitives are the Temple’s jurisdiction.”

“Maybe his bosses didn’t want you interfering,” Ceera says, without looking away from the door. “You might have blown his cover.”

“Maybe,” he echoes. “Many see the Jedi as glory hounds. It’s true, in some cases. But other Jedi like Master Tahl, bless her heart, had cordial working relationships with Intelligence. If this was a large-scale operation, at least a few agents would have notified us of this development. Although judging by the fact that Grerssk was apparently the only plant on this ship, it is likely that only a small team worked on this operation. Then your inference that Intelligence did not want the Jedi involved would make sense; a small operation can maintain secrecy more easily than a larger one. The higher-ups likely ordered a state of total silence. And that’s that for this explanation.”

He shrugs. “The others fall into the realm of conspiracy theories, and there’s not enough concrete information to build on them. Of course, there is one point that doesn’t fit—”

“So then why would Grerssk tell us who he was working for?”

“It could be that he disagreed with the decision to maintain silence,” Master Koon says. “Of course, breaking cover early would be immensely shortsighted on a mission like this, but I’m inclined to think that he is no longer aboard the ship. He probably views Miss Stenn and Miss Ikerin as under our jurisdiction now, especially since that his mission—if my guess is correct—is essentially finished.”

“Does that mean there might be a Republic ship on its way?” Ceera asks. She sounds both nervous and excited.

“Perhaps,” Koon says. “If I was right.”

“Master, could he have been lying about being a Republic agent?”

“Of course there’s always that possibility,” Plo Koon says. “That makes his purpose here even more ambiguous—was he on this ship to still bring its crew to justice? Was it for some other purpose? Or was he tipped off that Miss Stenn and Miss Ikerin would be here—and by whom?”

The dice policy was changed because shoddy dice led to Roa's failed defense of the bridge and turned into all this.

Best of three, although I'm probably going to change that to a majority sucess system like Shadow Quest. I may change the number of dice required based on the situation and your personal expertise.

And to demonstrate, you get to your feet with a minimum of stumbling and spinning in your vision. Your torso aches with the effort, but your Zabrak constitution easily handles the pain, and you’re limber enough to pull on your tunic without aid.

Master Koon crosses his arms. “M6? What’s your medical opinion?”

[Miss Koo’lade is perfectly capable of movement, even running, at this time. Her internal injuries are mostly healed. However, I would not advise excessive exertion, such as being caught in the blast radius of a grenade.]

“That’s your definition of merely excessive?”

[Yes.]

“Alright, then.” Master Koon glances at Lili and Hannaca. “You girls and Miss Ceera will stay here. I doubt the pirates will actually harm you. My Padawan and I are heading off to the reactor decks.”

You take your blaster pistol from a nearby table and tuck it in your belt.

I still dislike SM's dice use, even if it is better than the previous one. While it is tolerable with d100s, if you used the same one with d20s two out of three rolls would result in a crit. Using SM's variant for d20 statistically still results in a crit 1 out of 3 times. (counting both mayor and minor crits)

May I suggest compressing SM's dice system into fewer rolls? For any distinct action, take the better of 2 rolls. Only the first of those two can yield a full crit, if the second is a 20 or 1 it will count as a minor crit and not fundamentally change the outcome (No supernatural feats, no abysmal failures either)
>>
>>27403507

Mm. Well, I want to stick with an easy dice system. Best of three is easy to understand, and the high rolls can be mitigated with even higher DCs.

However, your idea for limited impact from secondary crits does sound interesting. Your "better of two rolls" idea doesn't sound any different from the best-of-three idea, though.

Could you explain further?

The ship’s corridors are still lit by emergency infrared. Someone has long since deactivated the alarm sirens, but the near-total silence in the cold metal hallways is arguably even more unsettling.

Master Koon has his lightsaber out. He hasn’t activated it, but the mere fact that he’s drawn makes you nervous. You grip your blaster with both hands, the barrel pointed at the ground.

Unfortunately for your nerves, you reach the rear decks with no incident. Unfortunately for your streak of good luck, that ends when a pair of armed and angry-looking pirates round the corner.

In my opinion the reason to use "best of n" is to avoid streaks of (horrible) failures. Best of three is far to extreme in my opinion though, because each additional dice roll makes the curve exponentially more extreme. Using 2 dice still makes streaks of bad roll highly unlikely without outright killing low rolls)
Compare:
Best of three: http://anydice.com/program/21d9 (Note the 50% chance to roll 16 or above. Also note the 10% chance to roll 2-10)
Best of two: http://anydice.com/program/b38

The results don't fit the common system perfectly because any 1 yields a crit fail. Imagine all percantages slightly smaller and 1 has the same chance as 20.

That works as well. I just dislike the system because it condenses the range of relevant possibilities from 20 to about 10 without actually eliminating the other 10. Also, it dramatically increases to amount of critical failures compared to normal failures (1 is more likely than 2-11 combined). Additionally the intuitive reading of dice is that higher=better in a linear fashion. All of those together result in some really wacky character actions.

You already eliminated the third factor by being aware of it. You could eliminate the second by counting only the first roll for full crits.

tl;dr Supercrits only count for the first roll. Following crits count as very good successes or very bad failures, but not utterly horrific ones. I suppose this system will do unless this quest gains more players.

You try to ignore the battlefield interrogation and instead concentrate on the corridors ahead. Shutting out the world, letting the Force envelope your senses, you reach out and feel for the presence of life sequestered in the lifeless metal all around you.

For a moment, you can make out the presence of several nearby pinpoints in the void, but a twinge of pain from your side breaks your concentration. The beyond-world drops away as you hiss and rub at your stomach.

“How many did you sense, Roa?” Master Koon asks.

“I’m sorry, Master. I couldn’t tell.”

He glances at you in concern. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Yes, Master.”

That’s when you hear shouts and footsteps ringing on the deck grating. The injured pirate smirks mirthlessly and opens his mouth to shout.

>Stop him. (Roll required, but not now)
>There’s no point. Fall back and prepare an ambush. (Plo Koon will kill the pirate)

>KO, prisoner.

You lunge forward and clap a hand over the man’s mouth. Master Koon finishes the job with a chop to the back of the neck, instantly knocking the pirate unconscious.

“Roa, drag him and the other man back down the corridor,” he instructs. “I’ll stay here in case the rest of the crew finds us.”

You obey and pull the injured pirate along by his ankles twenty feet away, then return to the man you stunned and do the same. As you work, the noise from the rest of the crew approaches your position. Master Koon leans against the inside wall of the corner, tightly gripping his lightsaber. It’s clear that he expects the two of you to be found quite soon.

Plo Koon’s lightsaber stabs right through his chest. The second pirate to arrive runs right into a sweep of blue light at neck-level. You cringe and look away, and when you look back your Master has lunged practically right into your face.

“Padawan, get down—!”

A thunderous detonation drowns him out as he tackles you to the ground. But the light from the explosion came from around the corner, you realize—he must have kicked the grenade back, buying you some time.

Master Koon rolls off you and jumps to his feet, lightsaber flaring back to life. You—

Ten seconds pass before you the distinctive sounds of running footsteps on the decking. A pirate—a Rodian with a bent snout, you note—dives around the corner like an action-holo hero, firing two blasters as fast the triggers can cycle, before crashing into the deck grating with a ‘ooph’ of pain.

Plo Koon casually blocks every single poorly aimed shot. But before either of you can retaliate, two more pirates step around the corner, one high and the other low.

You open fire at the newcomers, reasoning that two people would be easier to hit than one.

Your first shot streaks a hair’s-breadth over the crouching pirate’s head and detonates on the wall behind him. The second comes closer to the Rodian than his compatriots, making him yelp in shock, and the third smashes into the floor a meter in front of them.

…you need more practice with this thing.

The pirates’ return fire fills your vision with red light. Master Koon’s unerring blade flits and weaves through the air, intercepting bolt after bolt of energy with machinelike precision. He steps forward and deflects a bolt into the shoulder of one of the pirates shooting around the corner, making him stumble out of view with a cry of pain.

You fire first and this time you don’t miss. The Rodian has an almost comical look of surprise on his face when your stun bolt slams into his chest.

Master Koon strides up to the last man standing, knocking away his desperate, panicked shots, and slices off the tip of his pistol’s barrel before sinking a Force-empowered punch into his gut. The impact is audible even from ten feet away. He lets out a strangled groan before slumping over your Master’s shoulder.

Plo Koon steps back and lets him fall to the floor. You can see light glinting off the casings of two confiscated grenades in his hand—and the removed pins floating in the air above—before he tosses them around the corner.

“Fire in the hole,” he drawls.

The next corridor is shrouded with thick black smoke from the grenades, but you can make out the forms of three pirates crumpled on the floor. The crouched silhouettes of at least three more men are just barely visible inside the cloud of smoke. They appear to have been dazed by the explosions.

We're using the stun function. Innocents standing up who get shot are better than innocents standing up when Master McSlicey arrives. Same for bad guys.

Only bad things about spraying with stun is power pack concerns and making your presence more of a target.

A storm of red energy beams punch through the smoke like a hundred evilly glowing fingers. Again Master Koon’s lightsaber blurs into motion, batting aside blaster fire with swift, precise strokes. “Roa, with me!” Master Koon bellows, backing up until he stands next to you.

“Yes, Master!”

The Force explodes. There’s no other word for it. A flood of energy courses around you, silently howling fury gathering around the two of you. The air grows hot and cold at the same time, fierce as a thunderstorm and gentle as a spring breeze. The power shakes the walls, the ceiling, and the floor like the grenades earlier as it coalesces into a gale of destruction—you can hear the pirates swearing in surprise only a few meters away.

You and Plo Koon fling your hands forward in unison. The Force surges forward like a tidal wave, instantly dispersing the smoke, and crashing into the men hidden within it. A dozen asses hit the deck and weapons and drawn grenades go flying back.

Master Koon’s commlink rings.

“Odd,” he says, pulling it off his belt. “I didn’t realize I could get a signal in here.”

He sets it to speaker and holds it up to his ear. “Yes?”

[Is…Mast…oon?] The transmission is badly garbled with static. [This…blic…Rasa…standing…kilometers…can…hear…over?]

“Yes, this is Jedi Master Koon,” he says. “Is this a Republic ship? There’s a lot of static, over.”

[…Rep…ship. We’ve…escape…with…agent…us…prison…Force…]

“Say again, Republic vessel. I can’t hear you clearly, over.” Plo Koon sighs and glances behind him. “We’ll need to get closer to the top of the hull to get a better signal. Maybe we can bounce one off the ship’s communications array.”

>No, let’s keep going to the engine room.

Split up. We'll go get a signal, he can fight the rest of the pirates.

If we're getting hailed by a Republic ship, then hell yeah, let's get a signal. We've been on this ship and this tangent of a plotline for way too long.

Elevators seem pretty frequent, assuming we didn't blow up the main one.

Not to say scenes with lots of action can't be stretched out where necessary, but this section has been starting to drag. On the whole, it's fine, but pacing is important.

We don't have a saber, we were picked out for apprenticeship yesterday, we've already left the temple on a mission even though we're unarmed and still need training, and we've been in mortal danger for the past hour.

We can do stuff ourselves when we're not at risk of DEATH.

But it literally hasn't even been a week since we became a padawan apprentice.
Yeah, sure, he can't hold our hand all the time, but come on, be reasonable here.

“Padawan, you’ve seen more of this section of the ship than I have,” Master Koon says. “Do you know if there are any elevators or service ladders nearby?”

“There should be,” you murmur.

The two of you cautiously but quickly search the surrounding corridors for any way to the upper decks. After a few minutes, you manage to find a turbolift at the end of a short passageway, but it only goes up to the fifth deck.

“Stability reasons,” Master Koon explains, when you ask why. “On ships, especially on military ships, turbolift shafts are a major structural weakness. A lucky shot into a hole that runs all the way through a ship’s hull can cause much damage.”

He shrugs. “I suppose three floors’ difference will have to do. It’s only two decks.”

You activate the turbolift and wait impatiently for the car to reach your destination. No one is waiting for you when the doors open and you step out. The pirates must have barricaded themselves around the engine room. That makes sense given how easily you infiltrated that area earlier.

“Alright, let’s try again,” Master Koon says, holding up his commlink. “Republic ship, this is Jedi Master Plo Koon. Please respond, over.”

[We read you loud and clear, Master Jedi,] a Coruscanti-accented male voice replies. [This is the Republic ship Tabula Rasa. We just picked up an escape pod with our agent. He’s already briefed us on the situation, but we’d like to hear the situation from you, over.]

“Understood, Tabula Rasa,” Master Koon replies. “We were…”

The explanation takes a total of three minutes, in which the Republic officer doesn’t say a single word. When your Master is finished, a long whistle slightly marred by static comes through the channel.

[That’s quite a story. Alright, we’ll have armed Judicial officers aboard in five minutes. You said the girls and your prisoners were all near the medical bay?]

“That’s correct, officer. My Apprentice and I are on the fifth floor ourselves. Do you want us to stay where we are?”

[Actually, could you get to the medical bay? A Jedi makes great security. I don’t want that captain waking up and slipping away.]

“We can, although I had the medical droid anesthetize him.”

[Understood. Tabula Rasa, out.]

“Plo Koon, out.” Your Master stows his commlink. “Finally, we can get on with our real mission.”

You laugh.

2/2

As promised by the Republic officer, heavily armed Judicials, body armor covering their distinctive blue uniforms, flood the pirate ship after a few minutes. You, your Master, Lili, and Hannaca are escorted onboard the rescue ship, which is rather reassuringly much larger than the Estrella was. Ceera is handcuffed and led away with the rest of the pirate crew members, who give her confused looks when they see her.

Lili and Hannaca are taken to a stateroom to wash up. A Republic officer, presumably the one who spoke to Master Koon over the comlink, appears and introduces himself as Commander Durlint and the ship’s executive officer. He asks your Master to follow him to the captain’s office.

Commander Durlint blinks when he looks back and sees you trailing behind Master Koon, but he says nothing.

Eventually, you reach a door that has a plaque marked ‘Captain Tarkin’. Plo Koon visibly starts when he sees it. The office behind is spartanly furnished, with only a holoterminal-equipped desk, chair, and several filing cabinets containing a number of datapads.

The captain gets up and sweeps his gaze across the three of you. He’s an older man, handsome, with black hair lined with silver and piercing, intelligent grey eyes.

“Captain?” Commander Durlint salutes. “The Jedi, as requested, sir. They’re—”

“No need for introductions, Commander. Thank you. Dismissed.”

“Yes, sir.” Durlint does a crisp about-face and strides out.

Tarkin walks around his desk and bows to your Master. “Master Jedi, it’s a pleasure.”

“Likewise, Captain,” Plo Koon replies, returning the bow. You’re surprised to detect a hint of vitriol in his voice.

Tarkin hears it too, judging from his sigh. “Look, Master Koon, I’m not my cousin. Ranulph was hotheaded and it cost him his life. If it’s possible, I would like to talk without his memory getting in the way.”

“That’s fine, Captain,” Master Koon says neutrally.

“Excellent. Please, have a seat.”

Once you and your Master are seated, Tarkin returns to his chair.

“I’m sure you have questions, but before you ask, I was unaware of Agent ‘Grerssk’ and his mission,” the captain begins. “I was told by Intelligence to park my ship at this location. Now I know why.”

“Captain, if I may be direct, why did you want to speak with us?” Master Koon says bluntly.

Tarkin grimaces. “The Senate is concerned about the hyperdrive sabotages on Fondor, as well. The Tabula Rasa has been assigned to your investigation, Master Jedi.”

Koon’s voice is as cold as outer space. “I see.”
