Dark Souls is pretty dark, I guess. I hear a bunch of people saying Kingdom Death is darker, though.

Real life, because you get to have a lifetime of mediocrity, nothing special ever happens, and the entire time you are getting fucked over one way or the other.

Drakengard is dark, but I don't think it's the darkest setting out there. Sure the world's doomed and everybidy is insane, but I've seen worse.

I'd rule out Berserk because Berserk actually has hope. That's what I love about it; that there's actually a chance Guts could manage to kill off the Godhand and save Casca. But it still makes it not as grimdark as most.

Honestly, I'd probably go First Edition Exalted, before they pissed all over the Fey. Even 40k still has hope. Leman Russ and Vulkan could still show up again, or the Emperor could wake up, or the Necrons, Tyranids, and the forces of Chaos could Pyrrhic Victory each other and get a MAD scenario, leaving us alone with a calm warp and the comparatively minor threats of the Orks, Tau, and Eldar.

But First Edition Exalted had NO hope. Shit was completely fucked. The Cthulhu fairies were coming, time was running out, the age of wonders of today is a burnt and broken husk of what once was, anybody and anything that could potentially stop the end was cosmologically prevented from doing so or compelled by their own powers to be jacking off in a corner forever, and everybody had fucked up collectively to get us to this point. The Lunars fucked up, the Solars were overthrown tyrants, the Sidereals were smug assholes who broke the universe they were sworn to protect and won't admit anything is wrong, and the Dragonblooded had effectively enslaved humanity into a cult of lies that witchhunted and persecuted any Exalts, particularly Solars, that arose, to cover up the atrocities they committed in the past.

Everything was fucked, it was everybody's fault, there was no saving the world, the clock was ticking down, and an entire universe of Mary Sues and Weaboo bullshit hax couldn't save it.

Then they pussied the fuck out and made the Fey defeatable. But before then, yeah. Probably have to give it to Exalted. Most settings at least have the hope that everything will blow up and something might rise up out of the ashes to rebuild. In Exalted, that had already happened. This was the second apocalypse, only this time for keeps.

Drakengard 3 this December, anon. It's being made by all the best doods from Nier and the original Drakengard.

According to Wiki, Yoko Taro(the guy responsible for most of the grimdark) said that if you go into it expecting Drakengard or Nier that you'll be disappointed, but I don't believe that he's capable of creating something that isn't horribly bleak.

>>
>>27391102
The Skull Knight implied that Guts will have to make a choice about this, yes, but he was vague about it. He also said, and this was much more clearly than the first implication, that the world is "like shadows and reflections in the water of a stream." Everyone and everything in the world is ephemeral. Griffith is an exception. He's real, more real than anything else, and has a gravity that pulls other things to him. He's taken over the narrative of the world, inserting himself in as the hero. This was part of his bargain.

The Skull Knight made it quite clear that so long as Guts remains a shadow cast in the water, he cannot defy or oppose Griffith and the Godhand. But he also implied that it was within Gut's power to break free of the narrative that has unfolded, and that he could stand outside of the story like Griffith does. If he can do that, then Guts will be free to make his own destiny, and can face Griffith as an equal.

Whether or not he can manage it, and what price he'll have to pay to get there, remains to be seen.

>>27391123
Numbers made them unbeatable. They were uncountable legion, a truly infinite tide that infected reality and warped the living and material parts of the world they invaded into becoming part of the Fey. They could not be stopped. They could not even be successfully contained. Their victory was inevitable.

The setting pussied out by taking away the "they could not even be successfully contained" part. They retconed it. And part of why I hate the fandom for it is because they're all ass-blasting retards who don't understand what a "retcon" is. You try and talk to them about it, and they're like "no, the new update says this, so it's true," and I'm like "yes, it does, but the OLD version said something completely DIFFERENT. They CHANGED it. It's retroactive continuity." And then they look at me like I'm some speaking some kind of offensive foreign language.
>>
Does Promethean: The Created count, or would I have to nominate the entire WoD?
>>
>>27393096
I know it sounds awesome, but there's nothing awesome there anymore. Trust me on that one. If you wanted to play the original version of it, you'd basically have me DMing and you'd be alone. Pretty much everyone who plays it now uses "kawaii-desu-nee" in actual spoken sentences as much as possible.

That's the problem. Exalted tried to be a grim deconstruction of Mary Sues, Wapanese bullshit, and crazy over the top shonen-style fighting. But a group of people who amuse themselves by pretending to be idiots will eventually find their group overrun by actual idiots who believe themselves to be in good company. Same principle happened here. Exalted was taken over by players and GMs who didn't understand the "this is a deliberate parody and deconstruction" part, and naturally they threw a pissfit when they found out that they couldn't save the day with their Mary Sue characters. So that got changed, the Fey got downgraded, and now everything that was remotely interesting about the setting isn't worth putting up with all the bullshit to see. It's sad, but I suppose this is the example of what happens when you lose the gamble of assuming an intelligent audience.
>>
>>27393126
WoD is pretty grim. Pretty much every segment includes at least one way (completely independent of all the others) that the world could conceivably end. If you take the entire World of Darkness together as a big picture, there are about fifteen different ways society/the world/the entire universe could die, and a couple of them are pretty inevitable, like the encroaching Fey from Changling, or the fact that the Werewolves are losing their war against the hungry darkness from beyond the elder void.

The whole place is set to go up like a napalm-coated beeswax candle in an International Light Your Own Farts Competition. It's just a matter of time and whose fart sets it off first.

I'm dissapointed nobody said Midnight yet.

Take your classic good against evil fantasy setting... and have evil curb stomp the forces of good. In most other fantasy games, you're a damn big hero if you save a kingdom or slay an evil god. Here... just saving a village is takes a damn big hero.

... and then when you have your back turned, orcs come in, enslave the men, rape the women, and devour the children.

I swear, Midnight makes Ravenloft look like Peppa Pig.

>>27393126
>>27393275
Oddly.. Prommie is kinda the most optimistic part of the WoD. With all the others, you're going into a slow descent into madness and monstrosity.. with Prommie, you can actually get a happy ending. Gonna be hard as hell... but, you can get there.
>>
>>27393126

Promethean is probably the only book that has the most outright hope in WoD, though they do start out pretty damned hopeless. You can earn a happy ending, an ending that doesn't wind in your death, madness, betrayal or whatever could happen as a Vampire, Mage, or Werewolf, and boy do you fucking earn it.

I do. I was actually thinking about that. I mean it's literally Hell, but there's no demons or anything jabbing you in the ass with pitchforks and fire melting your eyes out all day. All the awful people in Hell are pretty much left alone. And they just do the most horrible, awful shit to each other in the slim hope of being powerful and important, and when they have everything they want in their grasp, it comes crashing down. It's pretty brutal.

I don't know about that. 40k is grimdark to the point of parody, while Berserk and Bokurano are just normal grimdark.

Bokurano might be more grim than 40k, seeing as it involves the destruction of multiple universes. If it were just about the destruction of planets, it wouldn't be too bad.

Wouldn't surprise me if he managed to do both through raw grit and hatred. So long as he wears that armor, he's literraly fueled by anger and willpower.

...come to think of it, the only three animes/mangas that I actually care for have protagonists with similar characteristics. Guts, Simon (TTGL is just distilled anti-depressent in the form of animation, so he damn well better have more willpower than your body has room for), and Eren Jaeger (50% anger, 50% cinematic screenshake).

FFT and Vagrant Story are a couple of my favorite games of all time. I also nominate the Ogre Battle Saga for a very well-done low fantasy "grimdark" setting. Tactics Ogre: LUCT and Ogre Battle MOTBK are both so great.

What do you think the best RPG system would be to emulate these sort of games?

I think he's more a chaotic netural really. His concerns are for his own: Family, friends, seal to not destroy the world.

He just has that flaw of enjoying his killination. BUT, it's only from the Imperial forces, who he is at war with. You never see Caim kill anyone who's not associated with the Empire (save for stuff to do with the endings). Caim's murderistic tendencies is extended revenge to those who wronged him (the Empire who killed his parents).

Being a general dick doesn't equal being evil.
>>
>>27419620
To be fair, he'd probably be considered pretty fucking evil in your standard DnD setting. In Drakengard he has the excuse of being able to vent his vindictive aggression on things that are simply way worse than him.

I think it's kind of funny that people think Caim is just SUCH a murderhobo. If you go back to the games, yes in drakengard 2 he smiled when he killed people, but he didn't much seem like that at the beginning of the first.
I think that all the war that he had gone through pretty much gave him a kind of ptsd and tortured his overall psyche.

He put thousands of men to the death by blade alone, fought monsters, killed dragons, and his last greatest enemy? A little girl. A little girl that he had resolved to let live so that she would forever see the results of her actions.

If he was really as brutal as people remember him, he'd have killed that little cunt too.
>>
>>27419892
He didn't try to make her redeem herself. He was punishing her. It was all to make her suffer for something she didn't do of her own free will.
>>

>>
>>27389009

>>
>>27419976

Yes, but it's still an act of mercy to some degree. Especially because one way or another he would eventually die and she would then live on her own. It's actually rather interesting that he even took care of her for the time.

She was the reason that he only had one eye in 2.
>>
>>27396002
the grimdark of 40k doesn't come from one person have one bad experience then dying. It comes from the fact that you are born in a universe were the only thing you have to look forward to in your pathetic life is a horrible death that is guaranteed to all, and you and your children and your children's children, and no matter how hard you fight at best you can only keep the enemies at bay long enough to have another line of your ancestors born before your planet is purged of all life and forgotten.
>>
>>27417191
Bokurano isn't really grimdark because of the destruction of universes, more of the children being forced to murder everyone on Earth in those universes.

He kept her alive. That's about the extent of care she got. He dragged her around to every settlement he could find, and at every stop he'd point out the terrors inflicted by the Empire and let the people punish her as they saw fit. It was mercy in the sense that he stayed his hand so that everybody could get a turn to make her suffer. She was mortified by the very thought of him for years to come. He didn't give his eye for her; she gouged it out when she made her escape.

Nope.

In the second game he's absolutely chaotic evil, and it sort of retroactively carries over to the first game since he seems to have no qualms at all about massacring the Union troops.

He's entirely willing and able to utterly and completely fuck the world in order to save Angelus. And then there's the fact that he seems to really, REALLY enjoy murdering dozens of people. He murdered Urick so hard that DEATH died instead. His kill count is in the tens of thousands.

There is absolutely no way Caim is anything except evil.

Kult is a horror setting with a bit of gnostic vibe. Basicly, in ages past, humanity was God's equal. Through trickery, we were brought low and trapped in The Lie, reality as we know it, one huge illusion to keep us from remembering our true power. Some time later, God fucked off for parts unknown. Now his servants keep us chained through a combination of "that's how it's always been" and serving their own desire for power. Hell also keeps on in a similar manner. Forces from both sides keep the people too focused on trivialities to question things much, and generally kill the shit out of anyone starting to realize how thing really work.

Heaven's an empty ruin, and all we have to look forward after death is suffering, either in Hell proper, or our own personal Purgatories, where we are tortured until all traces of our indentities are purged, allowing us to move on to reincarnation.

Maybe not quite as hopeless as the most grimdark universes, but I have been rewatching/reading Claymore recently and it fits rather well.

Last I checked 60-70% of the characters die, and all of the claymore ones (90%+ of the cast pretty much) are doomed to eventually turn into the demons they hunt or possibly be executed by their friends to prevent this. (unless they die in battle of course)

These demons (yoma) also most likely killed/ate their entire family and possibly raped them after taking over the body of one of their siblings or parents. Such siblings/parents would be forced to watch through their eyes as they commit these acts.

Survivors of such attacks are often thrown out into the wilderness by their village due to their contact with yoma.

These yoma attacks are often setup on purpose by the Organization behind the claymores for the intent of abducting the child afterwards (due to people being fueled by hatred becoming more powerful soldiers, and noone caring about orphans) so they can be raised as weapons for the purpose of hunting more yoma.

The entire continent is just a testing ground for these living weapons, which I assume are required to fight something more horrifying than yoma on the mainland, have not gotten far enough to discover what that thing is however.

The most grimdark of universes is any universe that incorporates the Christian conception of hell- infinite pain, for an infinite period of time, with no hope of any reprieve. No matter how bad things are in a universe without it, as long as there are only a finite number of people suffering finite pain, with only the most minuscule of hopes, it is still infinitely better than any universe where infinite pain is a possibility.
It's simple utilitarianism.

>No Wraith:The Oblivion

Step it up /tg/. You're dead. The Afterlife is broken. Your sorrow and regret bind you to the world of the living and help you defy death. Your own pain and madness is made manifest within your Shadow, who stops at nothing to bring you to Oblivion. The 'standard' life for a Wraith is to either slave away in a shitty job or fight for eternity, that's your reward in death, or end up as raw materials, soulforged into a chair or a weapon for some other poor cunt to wear, abuse or lose. Everyone is very aware that in the eyes of others, they're little better than raw materials. Souls of children and animals are soulforged on sight, since they cannot resist their shadows as much. The only 'good' end is to fully accept your death and meet Oblivion gracefully, if you can't, then your anguish manifests into one of the infinite hordes of spectres and other horrors that roll forth to consume all that is dead, then all that is alive in a wave of pain. It's not helping that all Wraiths are the unwilling and unwitting first line of defence in the World of Darkness, where demons, malfeans and outsiders creep into the realms of men, they often plough through sad ranks of conscripted women who died in childbirth, child soldiers and suicide bomb victims while the real soldiers cower away somewhere they think is safe. Some settings have greater suffering in sheer scale, like 40k, but when it comes to absolute bleakness, I think Wraith takes the cake.
>>

Edgy: the Tryhard doesn't count. White Wolf had turned into the dude who cuts his wrist and sings lullabies to freak others out by the time Wraith came out.

Most Grindark setting:
Play Violence, but situate the game in Turku, Finland.

It is a place where all the girls are beautiful, all the men are total assholes, everyone is hostile towards outsiders, and the most common passtime is spying on your neighbours.

Whe you should use it: It is almost perfet setting for Violence. Turku is the only place where you can kill anyone you meet without feeling bad about it.

>"earth 21"

Let me describe you Earth 2140.
There's two factions. The Eurasian Dynasty, which controls all continents except for America.
And the United Civilized States, which control the whole American continent.
Most of the world is so irradiated that normal humans can't survive there.
The ED is controlled by a Czar. The Czar doesn't like disobedience.
So what did he do?
He forcefully transformed the entire human population into cyborgs. This has the nice side-effect of allowing them to survive on earth's surface, but is mostly there to make them as controllable as machines.
New cyborgs are created by building the artificial shell and cloning their rudimentary organs.
The UCS isn't much better. Their people live peaceful lives of Brave New World, the president is elected at random and no president gives a fuck about ruling anymore because the advisor AI has proven to be competent enough on its own.
Their armies consist of advanced robots, with the infantry looking like terminator rip-offs.
Everything is automated and yet civilians can join the military.
The reason? Their bots are controlled by small black boxes, suspiciously similar in size to human brains with some life support...

So you have two dystopic regimes duking it out on an earth that has already been nuked to hell and back. And that's the first game of a trilogy. It's basically a small-scale version of Total Annihilation.
And don't get me started on the dickhead aliens that let their weird-ass weapons lie around everywhere in the entire universe. They also had a gun trained on earth, hidden on the moon.

Kill or be killed - It's a reality that we like to avoid, but it's still there. Bokurano just made it into a supernatural construct.

The giant cannibal babies who never open their eyes are actually a decent(albeit intentionally grotesque hurr) parallel to the Caim's party.

The patron saint of killing everybody. He made a pact with a dragon for great power at the cost of his voice. Then he runs around as a mute and kills everybody who're not helping him kill people. By the end of the first game, he has personally killed more than ten thousand people.

He's an enemy in the sequel. And as it turns out, people are terrified of him. Considering he kills Death at one point, their fears are sort of justified. The main characters actually decide to fight his dragon instead of him, because they feel that's the safer option. Bear in mind, his dragon is basically a nuke with teeth, and has been driven insane to the point of omnicidal rage. And fighting that is preferable to fighting Caim.
