You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Luciana, the fourth princess of the kindom of Marconetti, has arrived at the castle on official business. Though she's Princess Marianne's best friend, Luciana's personality is what you'd actually expect from a princess! Too bad her demeanor hasn't rubbed off on Marianne at all.

It turns out that Luciana's father offered her hand in marriage to the King, as a plot to unite their two countries. But much to Marianne's relief, the offer was declined.

But the time for princessly matters is over, as you are finally free for the night!

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

Keeping to what seems to have become your usual routine, you head down to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat. As you walk, you keep an eye out for Arnaud since there were some things that you wanted to ask him about, but he's nowhere to be found.

As you approach the kitchen, you notice Sylvie and Nicolette standing in front of its entrance, seemingly arguing?

"...I can't believe that asshole! You mean to tell me that he was trying to put the moves on you!? And right in front of... ugh! That guy has no fucking shame!" Nicolette shouts, clearly angry about something.
"Umm... it wasn't that bad, Nicolette. He got the message that I wasn't interested pretty quickly, and then he left..." Sylvie replies, fidgeting.
"That's not the point, dammit! It's about respect, and one would think that even that asshole would..." Nicolette stops mid-sentence as she notices you aproach, and then waves her hands in greeting. "Oh, hey Reinhold! How's your day been?"

The problem is that, in-character, Reinhold has no motivation to do this.

Saxes are blues backup. Straight blues requires a twangy electric guitar and a gravelly voice, singin' about how his princess dumped his ass.

"AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER FATHER, TOO!" Nicolette says, shaking her arms in emphasis. "Like, who the hell even does that!? The bastard's lucky he didn't get crushed into a fine mist right there."
"Really, Nicolette... you need to calm down," Sylvie says to Nicolette as she places a hand on her shoulder.
"It's just... a guy that I fucking HATE decided to hit on my best friend. Shit pisses me off, you know?" Nicolette takes a deep breath, and then looks over at you. "But that's enough of my griping, let's get some food!"

Closest to Final Fantasy, I guess? I'll get into specifics if the quest goes into that direction.

>2# Is the religion system more like ours, a pantion? Duelality? Shiinto? etc? and do they hold access to all the high end healing/cures/raise dead (if that is possable)?
Eastern countries are a lot more religious, it kind of gradually gets less devout as you go west. The most dominant religion is based on a single creator deity, and the way the magic system works means that the Church's own spells are difficult to use by nonreligious people. But there's no "holy" magic or anything.
There are also other religions here and there, but nothing as massive. Atheism isn't really a thing in this world.

Monique's time will come. I'm wary of what he said earlier, about having trained hard since the tournament. With a guy with a personality like his, he could be full of shit or completely serious.

"Hey Nicolette," you say as you eat a spoonful of stew.
"Hm?" she replies, not taking her eyes off the bowl in front of her.
"About that sketch you owe me..."

The second you say that, Sylvie starts coughing uncontrollably.

"Reinho- *COUGH* that's n-*COUGH*" she starts to say, then takes a long drink of water. "That's not proper dinner conversation at all! And you made me choke on my food!" she says to you.
"Sylvie, Reinhold isn't that kind of guy," Nicolette says, continuing to eat. "Unlike CERTAIN people, anyways."
"Uh, yeah. I don't know what kind of thing you're imagining, but..." you say.
"Um... excuse me then!" Sylvie shouts as she focuses back on her food.
"Anyways, I'm down for it whenever you are," Nicolette says, turning to you. "well, aside from tonight. But any time after that, just tell me and I can clear out some time for you. Can't skip out on a lost bet, after all."

We don't know when our days off are, or if we even get any - although Nicolette implied we did, she may be making a false assumption. >>27374302
If it's one handed, then it's an Arming Sword.

Lets get some new gear and make a step towards improving ourselves:
Inquire to Arnaud about the following:

Ask Arnaud about any one-handed, portable & concealable ranged weapons that are lethal, like a kind of slingshot pistol or wand with precharged spells. Otherwise...
Coat/vest: Same enchantments as below if possible, slots for throwing knives. Throwing knives.

Armor: Should generally be made to be inoccuous/unassuming. If possible: weight, sturdiness and magic resistance enchantments.
x2 Wrist Sheath; Knives (Enchanted for being lightweight, sturdy), one should be made for parrying.
Sword Enchantments: Lightweight, sturdiness, magic resistance.

Ask him about any other enchantments that could be useful for our equipment and equipment to be. Inquire to him about the following magic:
>Magic that enhances our physical abilities, like being able to flash step even.
>Resisting, diseplling, countering and detecting magic.
>Magic to go with swordsmanship.
>Protection/stealth magic, emphasis on being able to protect the Princess.

Finally, we should ask to train with him since he's apparently a master swordsman. Nicolette is a polearms user and vincent's style probably won't mesh with our own. So Arnaud would be best in teaching us some things. He'd also probably know any good spells and tricks to combat people like mages, and probably have the generational experience to know what's needed in a bodyguard.

"Tomorrow night? No problem! I guess I'll meet you down here at the kitchen, since that's how it usually goes," Nicolette says.

With that out of the way, you get to eating your dinner. The stew is delicious, and you -really- want to get seconds... but getting fat would reflect poorly on your swordsmanship so you make do with what you have. After you finish, you look over to Nicolette and Sylvie... looks like they've been done eating for a while.

The sword throw attack is a move of desperation, when we need any unexpected trick up our sleeve that we can get. In practice, it has a strong possibility to just miss. For general ranged purposes, tossing blades is shit. Also, as a personal body guard, we shouldn't really need ranged capacity anyway.
Armor and enchantments seem obvious, even to the point of being a bit boring.

Your proposed magic abilities are too vague to be useful to anyone, besides "flash step" which I agree is good, as it would allow us to invalidate range.

Better to have a ranged capacity and not need it than need it and not have it. We may have situations where we can't get into melee or need to just fire off a quick shot. Arnaud probably knows something good anyway.

And, we're not mages nor do we know anything but diddly squat about magic, so being vague is all we can be.

Why not just get a normal crossbow? Or even a regular bow, since we're apparently at least passable with one.

the issue with wrist crossbows is that you get at most two shots, and they interfere with using a sword, our primary means of defending the Princess, throwing knives on the other hand, provided minor proficiency in them, can easily injure or kill an attacker if we aren't stupid enough to throw it at heavily armored portions of someones body, and can be carried in small bandoliers.

I'm not sure it's really what Reinhold would do. There are probably much more harmful things we can do, but by this point we've already reached the limit of human ability as far as Swording goes, so any further and the slightest restrictions could start fucking us over.

Waving goodbye to Nicolette and Sylvie, you leave the kitchen and head back upstairs to look for Arnaud. Though he always shows up when you're not expecting him to, this is the first time that you've realized that you actually don't know where he usually is.

Though you figure that he's probably busy a lot of the time due to his position as head butler here at the castle, you don't give up your search, wandering for quite a while until you eventually end up at the armory.

And what luck! You spot Arnaud just as he's leaving!

"Oh? Good evening Reinhold, I wasn't expecting to meet you here! How has your day been?" he asks you as he does a slight bow.
"Kind of exhausting, but not too bad," you reply.
"So, did you need help with something?"
"Well, actually..."

No No, a knife is actually a good idea, I was just pointing out the fact that a shield isnt more complicated then one. In fact, we could put a full sized dagger on the underside OF a shield. Nothing sneaky about it, and keeps it on hand.

Who want's to go out hunting them down? now, a shield is bulky and cumbersome and gets in the way of sword swings requiring completely different motions, a dagger will not, that's my only point there.

As for concealed weapons, it's far quicker to pull a dagger out than a sword, and if whoever the attacker is doesn't know we have it, we gain the element of surprise.

Throwing weapons on the other hand are good if we're outnumbered and need to run.

"Thanks," you reply.
"Hm... we watched your performance at the tournament, and picked out your uniform based on that. You can see those armored plates, but the entire thing is enchanted to be a fair bit tougher than regular cloth," Arnaud explains.
"...really?" you say, genuinely surprised.
"Yes, Niklaus spent a fair bit of time on it. I believe the way the enchantment worked was that the cloth was made to be extremely resistant to cutting, though he couldn't do anything about stabbing damage without making the entire thing rigid... and by that point, you might as well be wearing full armor."
"...huh. I didn't notice that," you say as you feel the fabric of your sleeves.
"So to get around that, they put a bit of plating on your chest there just in case."
"I see."

>>
>>27375585
Yup one guy basically went full anal on upgrading our shit and people went along with it, when before we were told we had gotten the best equipment and that our sword was master level crafted. The only real thing we needed was enchantments.
>>
>>27375619
Uh, all I did was give suggestions on what we needed and including the throwing knife bit because someone wanted them. While someone else threw a shit storm over concealable weapons
>>
>>27375619
Don't forget the other retards going 'don't change anything they'll think we're trying to kill the princess'.

And a small, emphasis on that word, amount of extra gear for situations where our sword isn't readily usable for whatever reason is also appropriate.

"You do need to be wary around fire though, since the cloth still burns as well as anything else," Arnaud says, pointing his finger for emphasis. "As for weapons... you have a fine sword there. But do you carry a knife or dagger, in case you get disarmed?" he asks.
"Been carrying one for as long as I can remember," you reply as you bring your dagger out to show him.
"Good man, you should always have at least one of those on you at all times since you never know when you'll need one!" Arnaud replies, flicking his wrist to reveal a hand filled with several knives of varying length and shape. "In your sleeve, in your boot, in your belt... doesn't matter where you hide it, as long as you can get to it when you need it. They're also useful for parrying swords in a pinch."
"Thanks for the advice," you reply.
"hm... as for other offensive advantages, I would suggest spell scrolls, but that kind of thing is more dangerous than it's worth if you don't actually know how to use magic. Was there anything else that you were wonering about?"

"Umm," you begin, "could you maybe show me some pointers? You seem to know what you're doing, and I'm always up for improving my skill."
"Hahaha! I'd love to pass on a few of my tricks to you... but alas, this business with Princess Luciana has me extremely busy for the next few days," Arnaud says, sighing. "But after she leaves, feel free to find me and we can work something out.'
"That'd be great, thanks," you reply.
"Well... I suppose I ought to be going now," he says with a slight bow. "Enjoy the rest of your night, Reinhold!"

with your conversation with Arnaud over, you decide to head to the training yard to get some exercise in. Fortunately, it's not too far from the armory so you don't waste too much time in transit.

As you enter the training yard, you look around... there are still a few guards left working out, but they make a point to avoid making eye contact with you. Maybe they're afraid to train with you after seeing your match with Nicolette last night?

Pushing that out of your mind, you throw your jacket on a stool, grab a wooden sword, and go to work on a practice dummy. Remembering the other day, you hold back so as to not destroy this one... but it's rather beaten up when you're done with it.

Satisfied with your workout, you throw on your jacket and head into the hallway.

>go to your room and draw

It's getting late, so you decide to finally head to your room for the night. As you enter, you remember the map that you borrowed from Gerhard... as you feel kind of bad about holding onto it for so long, you make a point to get it back to him sometime soon. Taking it from its hiding place in your desk drawer, you unfold the (rather large) map and get to copying it.

Hey, this counts as drawing practice as well!

After about an hour of this, you're -almost- done... but you've started to have trouble keeping your eyes open, and take that as a sign that maybe you've had enough for the night.

And so, you fold the map back up, put it and your drawing supplies away...

...and pass right out.
>>
>>27376449

Having encountered a wild dragon on one the princess's horse/emu rides we encounter a wild Dragon who we are forced to confront so the princess can run away.

Eventually reinforcements arrive but by then its too late, we are a pile of burned flesh and the to survive we are forced to live in heavily enchanted full plate armor to suppress the constant agony of our flesh.
