You are an adventurer, recently moved to the great city of Kethyria to join the 765 Professionals Adventurers' Guild (765Pro for short) after your old guild was run out of business by competition from the massive and rapidly-expanding 961Pro.

"Recently" being in objective terms, anyway. Though you only arrived in Kethyria 4 days ago, you jumped right into the action on day 1 and have been keeping so busy that you feel as if you've already been here for months.

At any rate, you've found 765Pro to be an odd little guild in more ways than one. First off, the only man in the guild apart from yourself is the Chief, who's generally off taking care of logistics and paperwork in his office or out in the city. For another, there's only one active member apart from yourself with any significant adventuring experience -- a rather serious and diligent bespectacled young woman named Ritsuko.

And they have the strangest title for your role as the experienced adventurer who guides the rookies around -- "Producer". Which they insist on calling you by in lieu of your name.

You still haven't quite gotten used to that.

Currently, the whole guild is abuzz over a pair of strange creatures recently acquired in the course of your questing -- one you yourself found, one that Ritsuko found while you were out.

The friendly country bumpkin who gave you a ride back to town earlier today called the odd critters "puchis", and said they have magical powers and will bring you good luck if you treat them well. You're not sure about the good luck part, but you've just witnessed the magical powers, anyway. The one Ritsuko found, which rather resembles Haruka, one of the rookie members of the guild, apparently multiplies rapidly when exposed to water. Despite the chaos they've proven capable of causing, the Chief has just agreed to let the guild keep them, eliciting considerable celebration from most of the guild (though Ritsuko in particular is none too thrilled with the prospect of having such rambunctious critters around). Right now, everyone is having a lively discussion about what to name the two critters.

But another matter is pressing on your mind. On your most recent quest, a serious issue you'd thought long since behind reared its ugly head once more -- a very literal demon lurking within the dark corners of your soul, urging you to slaughter and mayhem. Before the end of the day, you should probably discuss this matter with the Chief and find a way to break this unpleasant news to the other members of the guild.

Being presented with a prime opportunity to discuss matters with Chief Takagi, you decide not to delay the issue. You discreetly ask him if you could speak in private, to which he nods soberly and beckons you to follow him into his office. The others seem not to notice your exit, being too caught up in the hubbub over the puchis.

Inside the Chief's office, you take the offered seat across from his desk and begin to explain the situation.

"Something came up on this last quest," you begin. "You remember the issue I brought up when we exchanged letters? The one I assured you was almost certainly a matter of the past, but something you ought to know about?"

"The possession, you mean? Surely you don't mean..."

You nod in acknowledgement of his unspoken speculation. "While we were in the tunnels, we found a temple of a demon cult. An active one. We walked right in on the cultists in the middle of a blood ritual. And as we were fighting them...it happened. First time in years, but it happened."

The Chief crosses his hands on the desk, a grim expression on his face. "Well, I saw your party returned safe and sound. Did you manage to control it?"

"Not soon enough. If the girls hadn't been so quick to realize the danger and restrain me, I...well I probably would have killed them."
>>
>>27353565
Takagi sighs heavily. "This is very troublesome, very troublesome indeed. But...you say this happened when you were fighting a demon cult? And in the middle of their ritual, no less? Do you think that may have had something to do with your...relapse?"

>[] "Almost certainly. It seems the most likely explanation."
>[] "Maybe. If nothing else, all the blood in that chamber could have done it. Blood always was something of a trigger for the demon to seize control. At any rate, I don't feel comfortable assuming that was all there was to it."
>[] "I can't say. Or rather, I'd rather not assume that to be the case. It's best not to make any assumptions that could lead to a false sense of security about this."

You think about it for a moment before replying. ""Maybe. If nothing else, all the blood in that chamber could have done it. Blood always was something of a trigger for the demon to seize control. At any rate, I don't feel comfortable assuming that was all there was to it."

"So, you don't think this is just a simple matter of keeping you away from cult activity, then?"

"It could be, but I wouldn't feel safe assuming as much. This is definitely something best played on the safe side."

The Chief removes his glasses, massaging the bridge of his nose. "What do you suggest, then? You know your condition better than I do, after all."

The Chief nods in agreement. "If that's what you think is best, then. Your previous guildmates had nothing but good things to say about you in the letters of recommendation I received from them, and you've already proven yourself to be a very capable and hardworking young man in the short time you've been with us, so I'll trust your judgment. And for my part, I will continue to hold your secret in the strictest confidence."

"Thank you, Chief, that means a lot to me. But as far as keeping my secret, I think it's best if we let the rest of the guild in on that. They deserve to know about this if I'm going to keep working with them. Hopefully this was just a one-time fluke, but if (gods forbid) it happens again, somebody could get hurt if they don't know about it. And if nothing else, it would only hurt their trust in me. I've already lost some trust from the girls who were with me in the tunnels."

"A wise decision," the Chief agrees. "Shall I inform the guild, then?"

Chief Takagi stands from his seat and begins walking around the desk toward you, smiling approvingly. "Most commendable! Of course, I would still be happy to support you in this. In fact, I insist upon it! After all, the guild needs to know that you have approval from the top! I'm behind you every step of the way." He gives you a jovial pat on the shoulder and extends a hand to you.

"Thank you, sir. I really appreciate it," you say as you shake the offered hand.

"Well, if it's your job to support those girls, then it's my job to support you and them both, isn't it? Just let me know when you want to break the news to them."

"Very well, then. In the meantime, why don't we have some fun ourselves, shall we?"

The Chief heads out into the hallway, and you follow. You're greeted by a considerable clamor from the main room.

"Chief! Producer! Help us pick a name for this one!" Yayoi holds up the puchi that looks like Haruka, a bit of drool dribbling from the critter's grinning mouth as it's thrust into the air.

"Nii-chan, y'see, we got the other one already," Ami begins.
"She's Afuu!" Mami chimes in.
"But we got a tie vote for this one," Ami fnishes.

"Oh, a tie?" Chief Takagi says. "Well, what are the proposed names?"

"Well, the leaders are 'Ribbons' and 'Kaka', with five votes each" Ritsuko says. "Though 'Harukasan' is close behind at four."

You're just about to ask where the last vote is when Chihaya, of all people, sheepishly raises a hand and adds, "I think Gonzales would be good..."

"C'mon, Nii-chan, Ribbons is best, right?" Mami says, grabbing your arm with a well-practiced pleading look in her eyes.
"No, it should be Kaka!" Ami says, grabbing your other arm.

"Hm...actually, Gonz--," you begin, before thinking better of it and stopping yourself. "No, nevermind, that's silly. I think Harukasan is best, personally." You notice Chihaya perked up a bit when you started to say "Gonzales", but after you changed your mind she now looks rather crestfallen, reaching across herself to clasp one arm with the opposite hand and looking dejectedly away to the side.

"I also prefer Harukasan myself," the Chief adds. "I suppose that would make it six for Harukasan, making that the winning name, am I correct?"

Ritsuko sighs. "Yes, I suppose you are. Harukasan it is." You vaguely hear her mutter, "Of all the ridiculous..."

"Uu-uu!" Yayoi makes that funny, cute little sound of hers as she looks down at the puchi clasped in her arms. "Isn't that great, Harukasan?"

The puchi stares back at her and drools. "Ka-ka!"

You get the impression it would have responded the same no matter what name it was given.

Not as such, no. In fact, there's not even really a particular god of wealth; prayers of petition and thanksgiving for good fortune in pecuniary matters are addressed to various gods depending on the mechanism of obtaining the wealth. For loot gained by adventuring, the Trickster would be a common one, or perhaps the Heavenly Shepherd if one attributes the haul to fate more than luck. Those that see their spoils as justly deserved recompense for their efforts might thank the Arbiter, for seeing that justice was served. Some might address the Hero, since it's basically spoils of war, but the Hero's tenets are really more about courage and valor than killing and looting, so that's usually frowned upon.

You call over your group from the tunnel expedition. "We've got some very important business to attend to," you explain. "Namely, all this loot I've got weighing down my pack. Why don't we all go get ourselves cleaned up, then meet back here and figure out how to divvy this up?"

The girls all accept the plan cheerfully, Ami and Mami looking particularly enthusiastic at the prospect of going through the loot.

"Come on, Harukasan, let's go to the baths," Haruka says cheerfully as she scoops the puchi up on her way to the door. Ritsuko snatches her by the arm with a murderous glare.

"You are NOT bringing that creature to the bathhouse." She says it less as an order than as a blunt statement of fact. Haruka grudgingly lets Harukasan go.

------------------------------

About an hour and a half later, you all meet back at the guildhall, freshly bathed and wearing clean clothes. Gathering on the couches in the back of the guildhall, you begin laying out the loot on the low table between you. 190 silver coins; one gold coin; a silver torc; a gold ring; a sapphire pendant; a silver bracelet; six daggers with gem-studded, silver-inlaid hilts; and seven silver rings with as-yet-unknown magical properties. Your haul gathers considerable interest from the other guild members, particularly Ritsuko (who gapes at the pile of valuables with undisguised greed) and Yayoi (whose expression clearly indicates she's probably never seen such wealth in one place from so close before).

"I don't know how it's done here, but this is what we'd do in my old guild," you begin. "When it comes to things like jewelry and other valuables, the amount of coin you can get for them can depend a lot on how shrewd you are at bargaining. When you've been in this business as long as I have, you can usually get a good estimate of about how much you could get for an item, but it's hardly set in stone. So what we'd do is, we'd estimate values for the items that are going to get sold off one way or another and let anyone who wants to try their luck at the market take it personally and count the estimated value against their share of the loot. Then, whatever isn't claimed gets sold off, and then we split up the coin. Sound fair?"

Everyone nods in agreement.

You begin to lay out your estimates for the value of the items.
The daggers are fancy, but frankly not particularly well-crafted, and the gems used in the hilts aren't especially high quality. You figure they'd probably be about 40 silver pieces new, so since you can generally count on getting around half market value when pawning loot you call them 20 sp each as loot value.
The bracelet, torc, and ring each look like they'd be about 1 gp market value, so you call them 25 sp each.
The sapphire pendant is quite high quality, easily the most expensive item of the bunch (barring perhaps the magic rings); you estimate it at around 3 gp market value, making it worth 150 sp as claimed loot.

The magic rings, though, you can't really put a price on until you know just what they do. Depending on the nature of the enchantment, you may even want to keep them for guild use rather than selling them.

Of course, you'll also need to account for guild commission. As Ritsuko is quick to remind you, the guild charter stipulates that 10% of any coin derived from loot (either looted coin or coin from selling loot) totaling over 200 sp from a single quest goes to the guild for general equipment and expenses. Anyone who takes an item to sell personally will need to pay back this fraction from whatever they get by selling it; the rest you'll take care of after selling unclaimed loot to generate the final pool of coin to be split.

There's also the issue of Ami and Mami's loot shares. You'd told the twins they wouldn't get a cut due to their illusory ceiling-monster prank, but given that they'd been rather well-behaved after that and the simple fact that the loot from this quest is quite considerable, it would probably be best to give them at least some cut.

>As for the rings:
>[] Get those identified first before proceeding with splitting the rest
>[] Worry about those later, you bet they're something you'll want to hang onto anyway

>As for the twins:
>[] No loot for you
>[] Diminished cut of the loot (specify how much)
>[] Full shares of the loot

Joking around when we are around the office is cool, in the field not so much

Get the rings identified first

Also I feel like we should get Chihaya a dog or something she can call Gonzales. One because I feel sorry for her and two because I would feel sorry for whatever else ends up with her attempts at naming things

If you follow the train of thought and replies on the thread, the consensus was to keep quiet and return them their full share on account of their good behaviour and performance after the ambush.
>>
Checking the issue of whether you already promised the twins their full share of the loot (note to self: take notes on such things in the future). Haven't found such a thing yet (I'll keep scanning the archives), but I did find that the original punishment was half pay in the first place, not none at all.

So, yeah, for what that's worth.

You decide to wait on dealing with the rings. It would be a hassle to get them identified and figure out a price right now, and you have a feeling they're likely to be something you'll want to keep for guild use rather than sell for coin anyway. If you do end up selling them later, you can split the coin at that time anyway.

You also decide to revoke the punishment you'd promised the twins of halving their pay, though you warn them that you won't be so forgiving if they try such a stunt again in the future.

Thus, the estimated value of the loot totals 510 sp. Since the guild would take a 10% cut of the sale, this would leave 459 sp to divvy up if the estimate is correct. Divided six ways, that gives each person a cut of 76.5 sp.

The twins apparently either think highly of their ability to get a good price for the daggers, or else simply want them personally; they immediately claim three daggers each, making up 60 sp of each of their cuts. None of the others seem too eager to claim an item, leaving the ring, the torc, the bracelet, and the pendant up for grabs. If they aren't claimed, you'll sell them through one of the guild's established merchant contacts, which will guarantee a fairly reliable price, though not necessarily the best one.

>Would you like to take an item for personal sale/use rather than taking a cut of what you get through the guild's usual contacts? If so, specify which one(s), remembering that your total cut can't exceed 76.5 sp.

>>27357319
>Divided six ways, that gives each person a cut of 76.5 sp

>>
>>27357319
You decide to take the gold ring, making up 25 sp of your cut. You'll probably hang on to it for awhile, taking your time to sell it or even just hanging onto it for a rainy day.

Finally, you ask Kotori for details on the guild's merchant contacts and head to the market to sell the pendant, torc, and bracelet.

>Roll to determine loot sale price. There's a decent chance there will be some deviation from your estimate, but since you're selling through a standard contact that deviation will be fairly small. Just how big it is, and whether it deviates above or below your estimate, depends on the roll. As usual, low rolls are better, so a low roll means you'll get more than you estimated.

You manage to get a little bit more than estimated for the three pieces of jewelry, getting 130 sp for them rather than the 125 sp you'd estimated. This gives you a total of 370 sp in coin, with the twins each claiming 60 sp in items and you claiming a 25 sp item. After guild commission is accounted for, that gives a total loot value to be divided of 463.5 sp, giving everyone a share of 77.25 sp. Haruka, Miki, and Yukiho each get theirs entirely in coin. The twins, having each accounted for 54 sp of their share with items (after guild commission is factored in), get 23.25 sp each. You, having accounted for 22.5 sp of your share with the ring, get 54.75 sp. The remaining 37 sp is handed over to Kotori to be put in the guild's coffers, and with that the matter of loot division is taken care of.

By this time, it's getting fairly late in the afternoon. Soon, people will be leaving the guildhall for the day.

You should probably gather everyone for that announcement now.

That's it for tonight's session. Sorry for the considerably long time it took for this last post; I got hung up on a trivial math error in calculating the loot split. Math after midnight = bad.

Thanks for joining in tonight, and as always I'm happy to take questions and feedback until I go to bed!

>>27358396
Everyone's around.

>>27358429
Yes, unless there's a significant outcry against it. Though in the future I probably won't go into nearly so much detail in explaining every step. It'll be a more streamlined process of "here's a list of your loot, what do you claim? -> roll for sale value of unclaimed valuables -> here's the final cut", with the full details of how the process works in a pastebin for reference. Selling claimed items off will be handled separately, though how in-depth that process goes is really up to you guys. You could go for an abstract "hey, let's sell X now" in which case it's basically one roll and a corresponding post, or you could get more detailed with your strategy and try to get some bonuses to the roll that way.
