You decide to take a taxi back to your apartment so you can actually get some sleep. As you look into the mirror, you realize just how bad you look. Your bleary, bloodshot eyes are set deep into the sockets. You're covered in bruises from the fight. You can barely stand. You shower and take go straight to bed. Your sleep is untroubled by nightmares and memories of old battlefields.

You are woken by the sound of someone knocking at your door. This time, instead of waiting for you to get up, whoever it is just waltzes in. You slowly open your eyes and get ready to hurl a pillow at the intruder.

The door to your small bedroom opens and you see that it is Yezrina. You throw the pillow at her anyway. She throws it back.

“Good morning, Mr. Heller.”

“Good morning, Captain. I'm afraid that now is not the best time.”

She smiles sweetly and replied, “I don't really care about your time. What I need is for you to be on task. How have things gone so far?”

“Hojo said that he was interested. I need to find a few more people.”

“Hmm, that's decent progress, but you need to get four more people over the next two days. Is there anything you would like to report?”

Here's a notebook sketch from when I was mulling over the idea. This is to show the evolution of sorts of the general design. There are a few problems with it, one of which is (aside from my artistic abilities or lack thereof) is the two-piece of breastplate. Later sketches have a one-piece breastplate. A further issue is the length of the tassets. Later drawings have them longer to protect the "muscles" which extend from the hips down to just above the knees.

She sighs.

“Waiting on your end. Time is of the essence. Get out of bed.”

You wave her away to respect your privacy and get dressed.

“I'll get the coffee started,” she says.

The breakfast is simple, bread and margarine washed down with bitter coffee. She must not be familiar with the human beverage. Time has healed some wounds, but your body still aches. She reads the newspaper and sips some of the coffee herself.

You get up to leave when she says, “Best of luck to you.”

You nod and go out the door as she remains behind. You stew at the thought of her there in your house, eating your food, reading your books. You shake your head to clear such thoughts. You'll at least be able to drink them away later.

You make your way over to the shantytown that sprung up after the war. It just developed into it's own little city, a mess of buildings jumbled together and untouched by any real architect's hand. Hojo was right, you do know where to go.

The bar is called “The Ka-Bar,” after that American fighting knife they developed to replace the old trench knife. They made a bigger, heavy duty version that more resembled a large machete for their power armor units. It's nestled between a brothel and some club. It's barred windows and the bullet holes in the front tell a story of conflict. You were there when the ISF decided to sweep the area. As it turned out, the residents were willing to shoot, and police weren't willing to kick in doors and eat a bullet on the way in.

You walk in, light up, and sit at the bar. You wait for the bartender to come to you and order a steak sandwich and a beer. You'll need a lot of beer before your through. It's a better vice than amphetamines, thankfully.

There are a few faces at this point in time. There's a woman with an iron hand in the corner, blonde hair closely cropped. You'd heard it was bad enough that the Yanks decided to send some women on the front in armor, but this was the first time you'd seen anyone who might fit the bill. There's a young guy at the bar with a raging high and tight, an EGA tattoo and another tattoo of the borrowed totenkopf that Marine Armored Infantry units used during the war. These seem like your most obvious prospects, but there are a few more candidates

They don't have a plan beyond going out there in patched together power armor and killing as many ISF and Sindarxi personnel, and collaborators, as they can, before they're inevitably wiped out.
I suppose they may be hoping for a Tet Offensive-like situation where they may all be killed but the Sindarxi media coverage will cause the Sindarxi populace to demand that the Empire pull out of Earth like the US pulled out of Vietnam.

But that depends completely on the mentality and culture of the Sindarxi; for all we know, they'll instead demand orbital bombardment of human population centers in retribution.

I want to see all of this go off, and then one of the factions that the Sindarxi are fighting against comes in, wipes away the defending Sindarxi fleet, and then starts using chemical weapons to wipe out all humans from orbit.
I want to see the humans, in their moment of victory, realize that they've only just ensured their own extinction, and cost the Sindarxi Empire an annoyance.

You smile at him, “Would you like a drink?”

He pulls out a challenge coin. You didn't have that same tradition in the Fatherland, but you understand. You whistle appreciatively as he tosses the heavy bronze coin to you.

“5th Marine Raider Armored Infantry Regiment. That's nice, I remember reading about you crazy Yanks fighting to defend your capital. I don't have that, but I was part of the 36th Armored Grenadiers Battalion in the Wehrmacht.”

“Congratulations on making it out alive,” he says, as you decide that you really like his variation of the Texan accent, “I ought to give you an American welcome. The name is Kenny Logan.”

The three of you go back into the Ka-Bar, and you order a round. Afterward, you go outside for a smoke where you explain the situation to Kenny Logan much like you did to Natalie.

He mulls it over and replied, “I can help find a few more people, but-”

“But what?” you ask.

“They're supposed to be dead.”

“Really,” you say, laughing, “Well so am I, but look at me now.”

It is my fetish. In all seriousness, it sort of built up. I wanted an alien faction that could relate to and could be related to by humans, but was sufficiently distinct. Space elves seemed like a fun and pulpy antagonist that fit those criteria.
