"So, Boss, remind me again... Why couldn't we salvage the Patulia after it crash landed into that mountain?"

You look at Garrod, and shrug.

"A number of reasons, I guess." you say, listing them off with your fingers.

"For one, the Anti Beam Field Generator, while useful, was too damn big to fit into the hangar, and the Freeden lacks the capacity to run something as power-intensive as that thing."

Garrod nods in understanding as you continue.

"As for the Wired Beam Guns and the Particle Cannons, the same issue applies; too much power is needed to fire them, and if we wanted to upgrade the Freeden's generators, it'd take up precous passenger and cargo space, not to mention the costs of remodeling..."

Garrod sighs, and shakes his head in exasperation.

"Jeez... maintaining a ship sounds like a nightmare..."

"Tell me about it."

You and Garrod turn around to see Kid, who joins you at your table in the mess hall, taking a sip of coffee as he sits down.

"I'd have loved to salvage that beauty of a Mobile Armor, too... Just thinking about all the parts and components we left behind up north... It makes you want to cry..."

You raise your mug at that statement, and Kid knocks his own mug against it.

"Here, here." you say, smiling. "Still, though... I'm glad we're all able to take some time off while the Freeden refuels and stocks back up."

Kid raises an eyebrow at you, his expression nonplussed.

"You mean YOU get to take some time off. All of the pilots and bridge crew get to relax while the engineering crew has to help keep the ship in tip-top condition." he says, jabbing a finger at you, which you promptly lower to the table. Oblivious, Kid continues his little rant.

"Don't get me wrong, I love this ship and the suits, but sometimes, i'd like a little time off to do some salvaging, you know? There's a whole world out there with things I've yet to tinker with, and I'm stuck playing janitor. It's infuriating!"

(cont'd.)
>>
On one hand, you feel for the guy, but on the other, you'd wish he'd calm down; he's waving his arms around, with his coffee still in hand, and you'd really like to avoid getting another one of your good shirts stained. Meanwhile, Kid is still going on, and doesn't seem to be showing any sign of stopping.

"... and another thing, we passed by a whole BASE! An entire military base, possibly teeming with all sorts of parts and who KNOWS what else, and we PASSED it!"

Garrod, who seems to have not quite as much patience as you, decides it's time to interject.

"Well, what if the Boss and me went there, brought you back some souvenirs?"

Kid stops mid sentence, looks to you and Garrod, and his face is like that of a kid with his weeks allowance looking around a candy store.

"You'd really do that?!" he exclaims, grasping both of your hands.

What should you say?

"Well..." you begin, looking from Garrod to Kid, and back again. "I had plans for today, but..."

"PLEAAAASE?" whines Kid. God damn it, he's way too old to be doing the puppy dog eyes. Don't do the puppy dog eyes.

"C'mon Boss, it'll be fun! C'monnnn...."

Dammit, not you too, Garrod.

"... Fine." you say at last.

"Could be fun, I suppose. Been a while since I did some salvaging." you admit, rubbing the back of your head.

Kid agrees to compensate you and Garrod for the time and effort spent, and you manage to get him to let you keep a few choice items from whatever you manage to haul in, though not without some difficulty on your part. Kid could be a real stickler when he wanted to be, it seemed...

Kid provides you and Garrod with some kind of Mobile Suit-sized handcart, and sends the both of you on your way, with you in the GX Hyper-Spec, and Garrod in the Divider Gundam, skimming along with the modified Sledge, the cart held in the grip of its manipulators. You eventually reach the base Kid has mentioned, and like he'd said, it was largely intact; sure the signs of disuse were there, it didn't look like it had any visitors in the fifteen years since the war had ended, actually. Who knows what sort of things you might find...

>Results: You - 19, Garrod - 18

The both of you conduct a thorough investigation of the base, both by combing through the debris with your Mobile Suits, and on foot. It isn't until you both reach the hangars that you find something.

"Hey Garrod?" you ask, looking at the contents sitting in the container you opened. "What kind of Mobile Suit do you think these limbs belonged to, anyway?"

Whatever they were, they were of an unorthodox design, that was for sure. There was no front skirt armor from what you could tell, some sort of grasping device was integrated into the legs that you found, and there were these two massive claws as well... As you're pondering just what it was that you found, Garrod chimes in, finally.

"I think I figured out what kind of Mobile Suit these parts belong to, Boss..." he says, motioning you over to his position.

There, partially assembled, or dismantled, was a Gundam. Nothing like the Airmaster or Leopard, either. You try to remember what this one was called, but to no avail.

You attempt to sweep the base for more parts, or perhaps some weaponry for the mobile suit you've now acquired, but unfortunately, this proverbial well seems to have dried up. You and Garrod load up the partially completed mystery Gundam onto the cart along with its parts, and step outside. The sun's a little lower in the sky than before, but it's still early in the day. As long as you both make it back to the Freeden by nightfall, it should be fine.

However, the beeping of your sensors indicate that your trip back is about to be delayed... though you'd rather not stick around to see by whom!

What will you do?

You and Garrod waste no time in getting the hell out of there. If there was one thing either of you didn't want, it was to lose your new MS in a firefight against a group of greedy Vultures. The both of you camp out in a nearby forest, taking care to conceal your Mobile Suits, as well as the one you salvaged from the base. Fortunately for the both of you, Garrod had the sense to bring some food with him; two cans of chili. Not what you would have chosen for dinner, but at this point, there was little you could do.

As the two of you eat in relative silence, you look up at your Gundam. None of this would have ever happened if you hadn't decided to buy it on a whim. Granted, you were originally after it well before Garrod ever got his hands on the thing, hence your tireless search for a G-Controller, but you digress. You stop eating, feeling Garrod's eyes on you.

"What is it, kid?"

"Nothing, Boss..." he says, looking away. "Just..."

So much for nothing, you think.

"I don't know much about you, you know? All I know is that you're supposed to be this lone wolf junk dealer, but I don't think that's the whole story."

"Well..." you say, sighing. "No one's ever really bothered to ask the whole story. I've never cared to tell anyone, either. Of course, i never expected to hire on an apprentice, but fate has a funny way of throwing us curveballs..."

"So," you say, smiling. "What do you want to know, Garrod?"

"I dunno... I have a lot of questions, Boss." you say, setting aside your food.

"You look at him; he didn't seem all that old; maybe he was Jamil's age? or maybe he was closer to Witz or Roybea's age?

"Like... How long have you been a Junk dealer? Did you fight in the war? Stuff like that..."

Boss looks at you, rubbing at his chin. What would he say?

---

You look at Garrod, and sigh.

"Well, I've been a junk dealer for about ten years now." you say, scratching your chin. "I only recently opened up a salvage and repair shop, but it hasn't quite taken off."

"As for if I've fought in the war..." you continue, shoveling down another bite of chili. "No, I haven't. My old man did, though. Died trying to stop the colonies from hitting Earth. Left me and mom alone on Earth."

Garrod says nothing, he's too engrossed in your story.

"I was about ten when the war ended, and got into the Junk Dealing business around my 15th birthday to help ends meet." you say, a half-hearted smile on your face. "Mom would always worry when I'd head out with the other Junk Dealers; always thought they were a shady bunch. Guess she was right, because this one time, me and the others went out south after hearing rumors about a wrecked Gundam in the area.... things kind of went out of control from there."

"We found the wreckage, all right; It was a GX and some kind of SRA Mobile Armor. Both of them were partially melted, probably from atmospheric reentry or something, I dunno... but anyway, we all got too greedy I guess. We were arguing about which way we'd split the profits, and things just escalated." you say, shrugging.

"Next thing I know, my MS is kaput, one of the guys' suit is slag, and the other one is split down the middle, and I walk home, only to find it in ashes. Turns out that while I was out, one of those pricks was trying to haul away the loot on his own, he gets ambushed by a bunch of bandits, the loot gets blown to bits, and I'm left homeless."

"So, is that all you wanted to ask, Garrod?"

He nods, and the two of you finish your meal in relative silence.

After you put out the campfire, you head to a nearby river to, ah, relieve yourself. Fortunately, or rather, unfortunately, that lets you catch a glimpse of a mobile suit not too far from where you were. You make your way back to the campsite, and shake Garrod awake.

"Huh? Whuzzuh-buh?" he rattles out, rubbing the sleepiness from his eyes.

"We need to go, NOW." you say. "Vultures are right on top of us."

"Oh no." says Garrod, clearly worried as he glances at the dismantled mobile suit the two of you have hidden.

GREAT SUCCESS!

You have to act quick. You and Garrod agree to use the new Gundam as bait to lure the Vultures. You and Garrod work quickly to remove the tarp covering the MS, and you climb inside,

Despite its half-completed state, the machine powers on easily, the shining emerald optics acting as a beacon to the Vultures. You scramble out of the cockpit and rush over to your machine, thankfully still under covers. You and Garrod power on your Gundams, and stand by as three Vultures, all of them in Septems, take the bait hook, Line, and sinker. You and Garrod take aim with your Beam rifles, and manage to take out two via shots to the cockpit, and one of them falls over after one of you vaporizes its head, its pilot scrambling into the forest, screaming something about a ghost.

Heh, he -wished- it was a ghost.

With the threat neutralized, and finding yourself with three new Septems, you and Garrod load them into the MS-sized cart, and elect to get the hell out of there. The sun rises just as the both of you crest the hill overlooking the city of Belgrass where the Freeden has docked.

If Kid was going to complain about you two taking so long to return, it was momentarily forgotten in the euphoria of obtaining four new Mobile Suits. Granted, two of them would have to be dismantled, one for parts to fix one of the Septems, and the other for spare parts, whatever the profits would be on the repaired Septem, the three of you would split it 40-30-30 in your favor.

As the day drags on, you awaken to find that the Freeden was asked to repair the mobile suits of the local militia, and Kid had eagerly jumped on the chance. Though no one had bought the Septem yet, Garrod assured you that it would be sold by the end of the day.

What will you do, Dave?

You decide to spend your time finishing the assembly of the mystery Gundam, whose designation you learn is the GB-9700 Gundam Belphagor, and set to work. You take a look at its systems, which seem to have a modified Flash System. Rather than give the gundam the ability to operate identical Bit MS, the Belphagor's modified Flash System granted the pilot finer control over the mobile suit. You understand how the basic Flash System works, so taking a look at this machine's modified version serves as quite the treat. You jot down a few notes, and start writing down some ideas for granting a similar level of enhanced control over a Mobile Suit without the necessity of being a Newtype to activate such a function. You don't get very far, but hey, you've learned quite a bit!

>[Skill Level Up! Programmer Lvl.1 --> Lvl.2] (+5 to Programming checks. You're capable of programming more sophisticated OSes, and could possibly create a series of macros that would allow a Mobile Suit to perform several complicated tasks without a pilot.)

It gets close to supper time, and true to his word, Garrod returns, having made a decent profit on the Septem. Having sold it at eighty million, that netted you thirty two million, whereas both Garrod and Kid got twenty four million each. Nothing spectacular, but it was a decent amount of money.

After dinner, you retire to your room, with a full belly, money in your pocket, and fatigue finally setting in, feeling yourself drifting off into slumber...

>Going to stop here for now, guys. It's past midnight over here, and I need to sleep. I'll pick it back up around the same time as usual, so if you guys can, make sure the thread stays afloat until 8:00 PM Pacific time?

The Daughtress Neo will probably get more variants based on the variants of the original Daughtress. Also willing to bet that the SRA will field more Bertigos and Febrals. We might even see the Descem Hornet 7 years early at this rate.

>Will do.

You find yourself standing in front of what looks to be a sunken Trieste-Class battleship. You also appear to be underwater, but have no trouble breathing. There's a flash of light before you find yourself inside of the sunken ship, in front of a black GX. You reach out to touch it, but the machine comes to life before you do so.

You're rooted to the spot in fear as you watch the Black Gundam X somehow morph into the Belphagor, a distorted voice coming from the machine.

>"All enemies must be eliminated..."

The Belphegor stands up, an unnatural, metallic groan coming from the machine. It turns towards you, then takes a step. Then another.

You're unable to get away in time as you see the shadow of the Belphagor's foot above you, and you jolt awake just as it slams down over the top of you.

You sit there in a cold sweat, the images from your dream still fresh in your mind as you look outside, where you can see the moon, unimpeded by cloud cover as it hung over the ocean. The Black GX... the Belphagor, and a sunken Trieste-class... What the hell did it all mean?

No longer able to sleep, you ponder what you should do until the rest of the crew wakes up.

>Go down to the hangar and make yourself useful. Kid and the other engineers might still be working on the militia's Daughtresses.
>Locate the Trieste-class vessel from your dreams. It's a long shot, but you can't just ignore this.

You sigh. Whatever that dream was, it had to be important. Too important to ignore. You head down to the mess hall and brew yourself some coffee. It's that instant coffee crap, but it does its job and helps you perk up.

You sneak your way down to the hangar, where you see that not even Kid was working on any of the Daughtresses. Even master mechanics needed their beauty sleep, eh? You power the Hyper Spec up, and look around the hangar; there were usually manual release systems installed in case a crew member couldn't reach the control panels... There it was. You step over to the MS-sized handle, and give it a good twist, watching as the hangar door opens.

Igniting the GX's reflect boosters, which were built into its solar collection panels... somehow... You'd have to take a look at them later and figure out how they worked, or ask Kid; whichever was easier. you take off, flying over the sleeping town of Belgrass, and before long you're flying over the vast blue expanse of water known as the Pacific Ocean. With no maps to serve as a guide, you were effectively flying blind here, with nothing but your abilities as a Newtype to assist you.

Speaking of which... you hoped that by concentrating on the images from your dream, your abilities as a Newtype would help fill in the gaps and lead you to your destination.

>GREAT SUCCESS!

You close your eyes, concentrating on those images, and continue concentrating... when they surge to the forefront of your thoughts. No longer were they hazy recollections; you could remember every detail of your dream clearly.

You feel a sort of a "pulse" east from your position, and you fly off in that direction, the Hyper-Spec skimming the surface of the water for a few miles before you submerge it, slightly thrown off by the sudden darkness of the ocean at night. Fortunately, the light from your sensors helps to circumvents this, and you continue your search. You watch as a school of dolphins swim past you, the sound of their playful chattering coming in on your audio receivers.

>"Turn back."

You blink. You would have written that off as you hearing things, but after the incident at Fort Severn, and the fact you're out here because of a dream, you weren't taking any chances. You look around, and see a single white dolphin amongst the group of others, and several other voices repeating the same thing. Did that -dolphin- just talk to you? Are those dolphins -talking- to you?

What will you do?

"Are you talking to me?" you say, looking at the white dolphin while wondering just what the hell was in that instant coffee.

You're about to write it off as you really hearing things, when you hear that same voice from before.

"Stop. Dark presence there."

Okay, so Newtype Dolphins were a thing. What next, Garrod has a female clone?

"What do you mean?" you ask, looking at the Dolphin.

"Black metal thing in there. Made by humans. Evil presence inside. Turn back."

You're assaulted by a cacophonic chorus of "evil presence" and "human" for a moment or two before they quiet down enough for you to interject.

"Maybe so..." you say, gripping your controls. "But I have to see what's in there for myself. I can't just ignore this."

You turn away, deciding to continue on, the school of dolphins' cries of "don't go!" fading as you get further away. Finally, you come across the ship from your dreams. You manage to find the breach in the hull, and enter through there. To your surprise, the upper floors of the ship were full of oxygen. The massive submersible battleship had far more storage than the Freeden, so it takes you a while before you finally come across the room where you find what you were looking for; the black GX.

Remembering your dream, you hesitantly approach the machine, and place a hand on it. Satisfied that it wouldn't suddenly come to life and kill you, you hop up near the cockpit hatch, and to your surprise, find someone in a mask that looks a lot like a Gundam's head.

Against your better judgement, you reach out to rouse the young man who seems no older than Garrod, (what was it with teenagers and Gundams?) only to pull it back as you hear the boy stirring. Was this some kind of suspended animation? Could a Gundam even DO that? But what surprised you more was what he said.

"Captain West...? Is that you?"

What will you do, Dave?

"No, sorry." you say, shaking your head. "My father died in the war fifteen years ago. I'm his son."

"Captain West's son...?" he repeats, pulling off his helmet. "Fifteen years... Wh-what..."

He stops there as he groans, holding a hand to his head. A side effect of the suspended animation, maybe?

"The war's been over for a long time." you say.

"Over? Then... who won? What about my mission?" he asks, beginning to shake. "What the hell happened?!"

"CALM DOWN!" you say, perhaps with more force than necessary. Thankfully, the mystery pilot complies, and takes a deep breath, saying nothing as you continue.

"I don't have a clue what your mission was..." you begin, looking from him to the head of the black GX, then back to him. "But if you were supposed to be piloting this thing, then whatever it was, it was important. As for who won the war... No one did."

You sigh, scratching the back of your head. You never did like talking about the past...

"See... the SRA had their backs against the wall, so they pulled one last ditch attempt to win the war. They'd launch a large number of colonies and nuke the Earth to the point where it'd be unsuitable for human life. The UNE managed to shoot down most of the colonies, but not all of them. A few of them broke past the last line of defense and crashed on earth, reducing the total population to about 100 million."

"That's... that's terrible!"

You don't disagree with the guy.

"After that stunt, the SRA effectively crippled their resources... no one knows what happened to them, since the UNE dissolved in the aftermath. So now, everyone left is trying to rebuild fifteen years after the war, having survived a seven year long nuclear winter. Some have turned to a life of salvaging the leftovers from the war, repairing them and selling them for a profit, and doing odd jobs on the side. We call those kinds of people 'Vultures', since they take whatever scraps they can find for the sake of profit."

(Cont'd.)
>>
The guy narrows his eyes at you, snorting derisively.

"Vultures, huh? Sounds like nothing but trouble if you ask me."

You sigh. You had a feeling he'd react that way.

"C'mon now... don't go judging a group of people based upon word of word of mouth. I'm a Vulture too, after all." you say, trying to smile.

If there was a reaction you weren't expecting, it was his.

"T-the Captain's son... a mercenary?! That's ludicrous!"

"So's finding a teenager in suspended animation just sitting inside of a Gundam." you deadpan.

"Still," you continue. "my point still stands. Not all Vultures are as bad as you think they are. Granted, there are a lot of guys like that out there these days, but there are some good people out there. Like Jamil Neate for example. He--"

You're cut off as this rude little dick decides to cut you off.

"Jamil's a Vulture, too?!"

"Yes. That is exactly right. Now AS I WAS SAYING--" you grind out, putting extra emphasis on the second sentence. Once Mr. Cold Sleep looked suitably cowed, you continue.

"Like I was saying, Jamil's a good example of a good Vulture. See, from what I understand, Jamil's been traveling around the world, looking for Newtypes, gathering them up, offering them a safe haven of sorts. To prevent anyone else from abusing their abilities, like fifteen years ago. Says he's also looking for answers as to just what the heck a Newtype really is, and if they're really humanity's future. Can't say I'm not curious myself." you admit.

"So, then... the SRA's Operation Lilac...?"

"A failure." you say, nodding. "Though not for a lack of effort. Fifteen years later, some nut called Professor Dorat tries to complete the plan using a Cyber Newtype he manufactured himself, but that didn't exactly pan out, since the Freeden's Mobile Suit pilots, as well as myself, managed to put a stop to that. The Patulia's currently buried in a mountainside, without a Newtype to serve as its power source."

(cont'd.)
>>
>>27357258
>You're cut off as this rude little dick decides to cut you off.
Whoops, repeated myself a little, there.

"I see..." he says, sighing. "So I guess I'm a soldier without a mission."

"Maybe not..." you supply. "There's always something you can do. You're a Newtype, after all. You have the ability to help shape the world for the better."

"Heh... You sound like your father."

"Do I now?" you muse, chuckling.

"Either way, even if you don't have your original mission to complete, you, as not just a Newtype, but as a person, have the choice of deciding for yourself what you want to do from here."

"I just don't know..." he says. "This is all so much to take in."

"You don't have to decide right away." you say. "But at the very least, I want you to come back with me, to the Freeden. We can meet with Jamil, and you can decide what you want to do with your life from there."

After a moment of silence, he nods.

"Alright. I'll go with you. But I'd at least like to know the name of my former superior officer's son."

"David. You can call me Dave, if you prefer."

"Look... I already said I was sorry, alright? I--"

You're cut off as Jamil bangs his fist on his desk. You've -never- seen him so pissed before.

"That doesn't change the fact that what you did was not only reckless, but incredibly dangerous! What if Orcs had been roaming those waters? You would have been alone, fighting against God knows how many amphibious Mobile Suits. The Hyper Spec may be versatile enough to fight underwater, but you have no experience in doing so. You could have been -killed-, David."

You would have argued that you did just fine in the water, but common sense points out to you that just traveling through the ocean and fighting in it were two totally different kettles of fish, so you keep quiet.

Though he was the last person you would have expected to come to your aid, Kai speaks up in your defense as he salutes Jamil.

"With all due respect, sir..." he begins, still holding his hand in place. "David might have very well saved my life. Who knows how long the ship's generators could have been able to run? It could have been anywhere from a few hours, to a few days, or even a few years from then. As far as I'm concerned, all that he's done today has helped you with your mission of finding and safeguarding all remaining Newtypes left on Earth."

Jamil looks at Kai, then sighs.

"We aren't in the military any more, Kai. There's no need to stand on ceremony." he says, pushing up his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose, before letting them fall back into place.

"R-right..." he says, lowering his arm. Old habits died hard, you supposed.

Jamil looks at you, his expression as unreadable as ever. After an agonizing couple of minutes of silence, he finally speaks.

Yeeah. Weren't we in a partnership to act as a member of the crew and assist in tasks in exchange for 20% pay. We're still a freelancer though, and the Hyper Spec is still OUR Mobile Suit. Which means he has no right or place to put us on lockdown for taking our MS and going about personal projects as long as it doesn't endanger the Freeden or any of the Crew.

Speaking of, we really should upgrade to the Belphagor. Thing is a beast, no Sat Cannon, but still a rape train and we never use the Sat Cannon anyways.
>>

>Which means he has no right or place to put us on lockdown for taking our MS and going about personal projects as long as it doesn't endanger the Freeden or any of the Crew.

But we're technically under his employ, which makes us a part of the crew. And besides, it's only two days. That's a rather light punishment all things considered. I imagine that means that he can't get into any more shenanigans for today, or go out swimming with the bridge bunnies. tomorrow, assuming that tomorrow we'll be segueing into Episode 16.

Wait... no chicks in bathing suits... JAMIL, YOU DEVIOUS BASTARD!
>>
>>27359734
>But we're technically under his employ, which makes us a part of the crew.
The agreement was that we act as part of the crew and assist in Freeden Operations. There were no operations going on, thus while we would have had to drop everything and return if required as per the contract, during times when the Freeden is not preforming operations that require us, we are free to act as we wish as long as we don't endanger Freeden personnel or equipment.
Which means, that per our contract, he can't actually ground us because we did nothing that contradicted the agreement as we used our personal mobile suit and while preforming personal work we are technically not a member of Freeden's Crew.
>>

Well, we are a negotiator - maybe we can arrange that our prison at least gets a nice view on the beach.
And we can convince Garrod to smuggle us some binoculars.

Honestly, if he thinks this is grounds to ground us, then he should have grounded us when we went out with Garrod and found the Belphegor. Because, same damn shit, only that time we actually got into a fight so it would have been worse.
Jamil is pulling shit out of his ass.
>>
>>27359993

"Jamil, while you are entirely correct about my recklessness, you have failed to consider one minor point. I am not, strictly speaking your employee. In fact, you yourself described our relationship as a partnership. My duties are to 1. Pilot my personal mobile suit in support of the Freeden where required and 2. Contribute my expertise towards supplies and repairs. Ignoring for the moment that retrieving a gundam and its pilot falls pretty clearly under the second clause, we are currently in a friendly town that has its own armed forces at a time when we have no known enemies. Thus you have no conceivable need for my services in the near term for the defense of the Freeden, and as Garrod and I had retrieved a total of 4 mobile suits for various uses in the past 24 hours I'd argue I have discharged that duty quite admirably as well. Quite frankly, if you think that you can lock up your partner for taking his Personal Mobile suit on a Personal errand that endangered no member of your crew I suppose you do have the coercive authority to do that." Shrug "And I have misjudged you quite severely."

Should I ask if he thinks that since he is protecting us vulnerable newtypes from exploitation he gets to throw us in the brig when we do something he doesn't like or is that too much?

Yeah... I may have realized that not long after the fact. I'll probably have the cock-up pointed out, lampshaded or something, and whatnot.

Would you believe me when I say this is actually my first quest?

I'm going to continue the thread here in a couple of hours, so sit tight everyone. I'll do what I can to fix the character assasinations and erroneous understandings of partnerships and how they work.

Glad I got people to point these things out, otherwise I'd just be tormenting you all with my piss-poor writing.

In the meantime, until the story resumes, how about an impromptu Q & A & Criticisms Session? God knows I could use a few pointers about how to make a Canon Character not be completely off-kilter in comparison to their canon selves.

I'm also certain you have some questions relating to the quest that have been scratching at the back of your mind, so I'd be glad to answer some of those.
>>
>>27371463
The guy has probably just gotten to used to his world being law and kinda forgot that he cut a special deal with us. As for criticism, the only character that seems off is Ennil El. We seem to have inserted ourselves in the storyline after she developed a crush on Garod but before the pair of them managed to spill an incredible amount of spaghetti everywhere. So presumably she would still have said crush, which would have been fun to deal with. My mental timeline might be off though.
>>
>>27371596
I'm not sure we're following the canon events at this moment. We did turn the Frost brothers into good guys, who knows what else has happened in the meantime.
For all we know, Ennil might end up chasing after Dave instead of Garrod.
>>
>>27371463
1. If you feel you must stop (ala Episode 3), no matter how close you get to the end of an episode, pls stop. Quality above most all other qualities, releasing content is somewhat less important if no one wants to read content because it is completely absurd.
2. Planning. Two steps ahead of players, and try to watch your pacing, please.
3. Read your work before posting, ask yourself if you can see this happening. If you can't, you have a problem.
>>
>>27371637
From my understanding Ennil gains said crush the sixth episode, when the pair of them fight and almost set off a nuclear reactor. In the 7th episode Garrod gets scolded by the 2nd in command while Jamil is in a coma, then runs off to sell the gundam. He runs into Ennil, who tries to buy the gundam and confess to him. Garrod reacts to the confession by pulling a gun and threatening her. Then women scorned and fury happens down the line.

In our universe episode 6 clearly basically happened, given the whole Jamil in a coma and Garrod running off after getting scolded by the second in command to sell the Gundam. This time however he runs into us instead, setting up a butterfly effect. This does mean Ennil's confession never happened, and presumably her crush on Garrod is still around, I think.
>>
Does anyone know if the Freeden has a 6 or 12 MS capacity? The wiki page for its class cannot into math.
>>
>>27371848
12 I think, otherwise we would have already run out of room. Though having to acquire and crew a second ship would make for an interesting adventure.
Current MS count: Gundam Airmaster, Gundam Leopard , Divider Gundam, Gundam X, Gundam X high spec, Gundam Belphagor, Daughtress, Septem and maybe a few Juracgs.
>>
>>27371970
Well, we're in a city at the moment, right?
Time do to some junk trader stuff. Might as well take Garrod with us, teach him the trade. We could convince Jamil to let us sell the stuff we don't need, get some upgrades, and so on.
>>
>>27371596
I'm planning on having Ennil interact more with Dave, and possibly, depending on how events play out, the Freeden crew, as well. Her place in the current arc isn't concrete, or really all that well established beyond what occurred in Canon, but I'll think of something.

>>27371970
The Septems were sold and the Juracgs, considering they were all shot through the cockpit, were broken down for parts. Granted, they're parts we could sell, but still. So yeah, we're pretty much running an (almost) all Gundam compliment. We are the envy of every Vulture crew ever right now. But with high-end equipment comes high maintenance costs and limited availability of supplies, so there's always those kinds of drawbacks...
>>
>>27371970
>Septem and maybe a few Juracgs
Scrapped and sold.

6 MS, however, the cargo space can be used to hold more.
>>
>>27372082
So, let's go make some money. There's probably something we could do in this city that could increase our profits - maybe offer protection or establish a small merchant guild that'd get some nice suits and parts in exchange for a cut of their profits.
>>
>>27372085
read this, read this and weep:
"The two large mobile suit bays located in the rear of the ship can hold six mobile suits each to allow the ship to carry a full compliment of six mobile suits"

>>27372082

>>

>>27372082
Okay, so then we currently have 7 mobile suits and 5-6 pilots depending on if we count Jamil. We still have room, but are probably going to have to start talking about possibly acquiring a second ship soon.
>>
>>27372233
We will... soon-ish. Right now is a bit of a Q&A session before we continue.
>>
>>27371808
I figured we were like...ep3. When he first set out to sell it
>>
>>27372512
Nah, Episode 7 "I'm going to sell the Gundam" is when Jamil is in the coma.
>>
>>27372214
Meh. Just a stupid typo. I had it crossed checked with MAHQ as well.
>>
>>27372585
I think we met him around ep 1 though. Since we found the gundam, then it was quickly sold off.
>>
>>27372674
Well, Garrod mentioned that he ran away, so it's probably later than episode 1 that we met him.
>>
>>27372674
Nah, Jamil was clearly in a coma like in episode seven. Also, the Alternative Company is gone (given that they aren't trying to murder us), which doesn't happen until episode 5. Looks to me like the events of episodes 1-6 happen pretty quick.
>>
>>27372785
Yeah, it feels kinda rushed. I'd like if things would slow down a bit, get some character interaction and screwing around instead of chasing after the canon plot.
>>
>>27372512
>>27372585
>>27372674
>>27372713
Yeah, I will admit that we rushed through the beginning of the series fairly quickly. Which is why I'm trying to slow things down, starting with this episode. I get the feeling that it's... not quite doing its job, but it's getting somwhere, at least.
>>
Guess he messed up at the beginning though, since this is his first.

The way he went from finding it to seeing it being sold did give me the impression it was ep1, yeah.
>>
>>27372903
Piece of advice, basically rewrite and extend the whole space portion of the story. IRL it was rushed so badly that the 8th space war literally lasted all of 3-4 episodes.
>>
>>27372992
This would be nice. Making it a true war. And the New UNE expansion. That would need some rewriting anyway since we got no Frost Bros. as antagonists.
>>
>>27373030
Given that Seidel Rasso led and ordered the colony drop that killed 90% of earths population turning him into a major antagonist does not seem very difficult.
>>
>>27372992
This, a million times this. Perhaps watch the episodes again and look at some stuff on the wiki. Concept arts, summaries, etc. Think up some motivations if you can't get the canon to work out right. 8th Space War could really use some love.
>>
>>27373126

Yeah, that would be awesome.

There's a lot that could be expanded on - attempts to rebuild civilization, meddling in local politics, maintaining our shop, establishing contacts, character interaction, there's a lot that can be done.
>>
>>27373177
Maybe hammering together a coalition to stop the New UNE and the SRA?
>>
>>27373206
Maybe. We are the strongest Vultures around, and we're the good guys. We could try to help people, establish trade (with us at the top, of course), help the locals with some stuff, get our own base from which we could launch operations and caravans, the whole deal. Maybe even unite the people against the assholes who're trying to start a new war.
>>
>>27373206
...are we really going to start a bizarro Trade Federation?
>>
>>27373311
>>27373206
So... make a Karaba analogue to Satelicon's AEUG? Or are you suggesting we make an AEUG-esque faction? Because Satelicon kind of fits that bill already.

Still, it's an interesting idea.
>>
>>27373126
The 8th Space War & New UNE (they took over the entire damn planet pretty fast) could use love, yes.

>>
Rolled 6

>>27373351
Are you restarting or are we continuing this story?
>>
>>27373406
Oh no, we're continuing the episode. No worries there. But this Q&A session has helped me identify the problems I need to adress, what I can do to address them, and gave me some ideas for the storyline a little bit later down the road.
>>
>>27373351
Make a Karaba analogue more or less yeah. You'd presumably do this by hammering together the various anti New UNE forces by helping them hold out and get into contact with each other. That would be the Southeast Asian countries, the North American Resistance Force and Saints Island, at least in cannon.
>>
>>27373369
That'd be cool. We need money to maintain our ship and suits, and creating some sort of business partnership with the locals would be of immense help to us and them. Let Jamil take care of the military aspect, we're a trader and a businessman first and foremost - cutting deals and getting supplies is our job. He wants to protect newtypes and the people, we want to expand our business.
>>
>>27373453
You've done some good work so far man, and we're glad to help.

you blink, looking from Kai to Jamil, realizing just what it was you said. Clearing your throat, you try to regain what little amount of composure you could.

"Look... Jamil... Captain... whatever..." you begin, sighing. "I don't know how you've been running things for the past fifteen years or whatever, but if there's one thing I do know, that's not how you treat a partner. What I do on my own time is my problem. If I get myself into trouble on my time, then I'm the one who has to deal with the consequences."

"I'll go ahead and head to my room, because I know you've been worrying your ass off since yesterday."

Jamil raises an eyebrow, and looks like he's about to speak, but not before you interject.

"Those sunglasses are great at hiding your face, but they don't make it -completely- unreadable." you say, allowing yourself a small smirk. "I'm flattered that you were worried for my safety, but for God's sake, man, I'm twenty-five years old. I haven't been grounded since I was -seven-."

"You always did have a heart too big for your chest, Jamil." chimes Kai, the barest hint of a smile on his face.

You weren't sure, but you could have sworn Jamil mutter something to the effect of "Can it, Kai."

Considering how they seem to not be at each others' throats, were they friends fifteen years ago or something? There was a lot you wanted to ask the both of them, really, but you didn't know what.

What do you want to ask them before you head to your room, Dave?

This sounds better than being a corny "peace gundam taskforce". A resistance group that helps local countries.

And frankly, you can't call it the UNE if it's some military dictatorship instead of the United Nations of Earth.
>>
>brb real quick; dinner time. Having some roast beef and veggies.

"So..." you begin, looking at the vaguely Gundam-shaped mask-slash-helmet thing. "What's with that mask, Kai?"

Kai looks at you surprised for a moment, before looking at the mask in his hands.

"This? It's supposed to enhance my Newtype abilities; why do you ask?"

'Oh nothing, just that I had a very disturbing dream that may or may not have involved you killing me.' you think, sarcasm dripping from your not-voice.

"Nothing, really." you say, shrugging. "Just curious."

"If I may..." says Jamil, clearing his throat. "That 'Mask' is so much more than that. It is a part of the "System X" program, which, not only enhances the wearer's Newtype abilities, but, also, in conjunction with a program loaded aboard the black GX, effectively turns the Newtype into a living weapon, not unlike the Patulia. This was devised as a counter to the SRA's Operation Lilac, known as Operation L."

"Original bunch of clods, hm?" you muse. Had Kai not been struck dumb by the cavalcade of information presented to him, he might've had the mind to reprimand you.

Jamil simply shrugged as he continued.

"Either way, that mask is dangerous, and needs to be disposed of. I'll leave the problem of the program loaded aboard the GX to Kid."

Jamil turns to Kai, standing up as he did so, extending his hand towards him.

"The mask, Kai. Give it to me." he says simply. His emotions are a mess, but he's clearly concerned for him, whether that was because he was another Newtype being used as a weapon, or because they were comrades, you didn't know.

Kai is quiet as he holds the mask in his hands. Too quiet, really.

"No..." he says, finally. "I won't believe it... This mask... It gives me power... power to complete my mission...!"

"Tch... I was afraid of this..." grumbles Jamil. "David!"

"Kai... Listen to me... Look at me and listen to my voice." you say, slowly and carefully, neither you nor Jamil making any sudden movements. Thankfully, Kai isn't so far gone that he isn't listening to you, at least.

"Remember what we talked about back in the ship?" you say, inching towards him. He takes a step back, but doesn't attack you, fortunately. "The war is over, Kai, remember?"

"The war..." he repeats, clutching the mask, sweat dripping down his brow. "The war... my mission... the mission... I have to... The mission..."

"NO." you state firmly. "The war is -over-, Kai. Your mission is done. You're a free man."

"I'm... free...?" he says, the concept seeming alien to him.

"Yes..." you continue, taking another step forward. "You're free to be your own person. Not what the military thinks you should be. From here on out, you can choose what path to walk from here."

"My... my own path?" he asks, lowering the mask, though not quite letting go of it.

"That's right." Jamil says. "You have a choice, Kai. Right now, you are MORE than just a soldier. You are a person who is free to make their own decisions."

You nod at Jamil, and return your gaze to Kai.

"He's right." you say. "So... what will it be, Kai? What is your choice? Fight a war that's already over, or start making your own choices... choosing your OWN missions?"

Kai looks from you, to Jamil, then to the mask in his hands.

"I... I..." he begins, chewing on his lower lip, his hands trembling. "I... choose..."

"To make my own decisions from now on!" he cries, the finality of his decision punctuated by him throwing the mask onto the floor, watching as the surprisingly brittle piece of hardware shatters upon impact. Clearly, it was not meant to protect the head.

"Kai?" you say, watching as he continues trembling, as if realizing just what he did. "Kai... are you alright?"

He looks at you, and manages a small smile, despite himself.

(cont'd.)
>>
"Did... Did I make a good choice?" he asks, just before he passes out. Thankfully, you're close enough to him that you're able to catch him before he crumples into a heap on the floor.

"Yeah..." you croak out. "Yeah, you did."

Kai is immediately taken to the medical wing of the Freeden, and to yours and everyone else's relief, Kai is okay, though he would likely be out for a week, if not longer due to the mental strain, according to Techcs.

Kid had the foresight to take a look at the black GX himself, and had discovered the foreign program on his own, and had promptly deleted it, deeming it a "virus that needed to be dealt with."; a sentiment you couldn't have agreed with more if you had tried.

With that morning's events taken care of, Jamil repealing his decision to put you on lockdown, and it already well into the afternoon, you sit at a table in the mess hall, idly thinking of what to do with the rest of your spare time.

You head down to the hangar, intent on borrowing a buggy to head out to town with. You're stopped by kid, who asks you ro sell some of their surplus parts, most of which are SRA-made in origin. It made sense after all; they had little need for Jenice, Juracg, or Septem parts when the Freeden was primarily fielding Gundams. You promised Kid you'd see about getting a few potential buyers while you were in town today. While you doubted you'd get much traffic in that regard, it never hurt to ask around, right?

You enjoy yourself as much as you can, asking around here and there at places where Vultures would gather; pubs, parking garages, anywhere there was a fight or argument, really...

Unfortunately, you had few takers, or none at all, really.

"Might be," you say. "Depends on who's asking."

"Oh, very funny." says the obviously feminine voice behind you. "Never took you for a comedian, David."

You turn around to come face to face with Ennil El... again. Was this chick following you or something? If so, that would be all kinds of creepy.

"So..." she says, putting her hands on her hips, waiting for an answer. "Are you selling parts or not?"

"I am," you say, nodding. "The Freeden's Chief Mechanic asked me to sell off some surplus parts taking up storage."

"Ah, I see." she says, smiling at you.

"So," you say, crossing your arms at you stare at her. Crazy or not, if she had one thing going for her, it was her dynamite body. "What do you plan on doing with the parts you'll be buying?"

"Oh, the usual," she says, waving a hand dismissively. "Buying your parts at a premium, then selling them at jacked up prices because 90% of the idiots willing to pay my prices think with their second brains."

"Crafty as ever, eh?"

"I prefer the term 'pragmatic'." she returns, smiling. "So... David..."

"I know that tone, Ennil, and the answer is still no." you say, cutting her off before she can continue.

"I'll admit that we shared a lot of things in common. -Shared-, as in past tense." you say, frowning. "But as tempting as it sounds to travel the world with you, doing whatever we want, whenever we want... I have a place I can call home, now. I imagine the same goes for Garrod, too."

"But I wasn't--" she begins, but you clear your throat rather loudly, before continuing.

"Don't give me that." you say, your frown deepening. "I saw how you were looking at him back at Fort Severn, Ennil. In another time, and another place, you might have gotten through to him, you might not have, but the fact of the matter is that the same thing applies to him, too. He has a place to return to, and people that he considers family."

Ennil doesn't say anything to you after that. She doesn't even care to look at you, either.

(Cont'd.)
>>
"Ennil?" you say, taking a step forward. Her being quiet was never a good thing as far as she, or most women, in your experience, were concerned.

"I'm sorry." she says, finally. "I shouldn't have come here."

"C'mon, don't be like that..." you say, sighing. "I can understand where you're coming from, really, I do... But I just can't do what you'd like me to do. I have responsibilities now, Ennil. I can't just abandon the Freeden to help you satisfy your wanderlust."

"IT'S NOT ABOUT THAT!" she cries, her hands balled up into fists. "It was never about that... I..."

"Look..." she says, sniffling slightly. "Whatever they're paying you, I'll double it. Triple it even... I just don't..."

You sigh, pulling her into a hug.

"Look... it's not about the money." you say, your hand running through her red hair. "It never was, okay? You don't need to buy my company, Ennil."

"Then...?" she says, looking up at you. For such a strong woman, she never seemed so vulnerable before, at least not to you.

"I don't have an answer for you, Ennil." you say, sighing. "Not yet. But I will say that I don't hate you. I don't think I could ever be capable of doing that. Maybe someday, I'll have a real answer for you, but not right now, okay?"

"M'kay..." she chokes out, forcing back a sob.

"Can you hold me? J-just for a little bit longer..." she adds hastily, a slight blush coloring her cheeks.

>"Yeah, okay."
>"Uh, I kind of have things to do..."

"Yeah, okay." you say finally.

Not even five minutes in, and people are already beginning to stare at the both of you, while you fight down the urge to scratch this itch just above your tailbone...

"Er... Now... you were saying something about buying some parts?" you say, finally breaking the silence.

Ennil looks at you for a moment, blinking a few times, before she descends into a giggling fit.

"Heh... That's just like you." she says after calming down enough to form a coherent sentence. "Business before pleasure, same as always with you, eh?"

You just respond with a shrug before you speak.

"Anyway..." you say, scratching the back of your head, forcing a smile. "Why don't I take you to the Freeden, and you can discuss the details with Kid? He's the one actually selling the parts anyway."

"Ah, alright."

Eventually, the both of you arrive back at the Freeden, and while you leave Kid to cut a deal with Ennil, you're left figuring out a way to occupy your time until she leaves.

You settle on trying to find Garrod; it's been a while since you've been able to sit down and talk with your favorite apprentice, after all. You eventually find him in the mess hall, idly poking a spoon into a helpless pile of jello, looking rather dejected.

"What's wrong, squirt?" you say, sitting down next to him.

"Eh..." he says, trying not to look in your general direction. "It's hard to explain, really..."

"Girl troubles?" you supply, tilting your head to the side. His silence is enough of an answer for you.

"No worries, I've been there myself." you say, offering the confused teen a smile. "So what seems to be the problem? Trouble in paradise, kiddo?"

"Not really..." says Garrod, sighing. "It's just that... Everyone's saying Tiffa really responds to me, and that I've been nothing but good for her... But I can't see it. Ever since I came back, I've been trying to talk to her, and even drew pictures with her a few times, but nothing's really working. I want to help her open up to everyone... me included, but... she's as hard as one of those old Simon Says games... I follow the signals as best I can, but sometimes, it gets too hard to follow, and it feels like I mess up with her sometimes."

You smile, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't sweat it, kiddo." you say. "Give her time. If she feels the same way about you as you do about her, she'll come out of her shell soon enough. Sometimes, these things take a lot of patience and understanding. I'm not saying I know, but... well... That's my two cents, anyway."

"I see..." he says, finally. "Thanks, Boss."

"No problem, kiddo." you say.

Garrod scarfs down the rest of his meal, and scurries off, noticeably cheerier than he was.

You sigh; sometimes, it was less like you were his boss, and more like you were a father, or older brother to the guy... not that you minded, anyway. Like Jamil said at one point, there was just something about the kid that brought out the best in people...

Now what, Dave?
>Check in on Kai, see if he's doing any better.
>Talk with Jamil; if Kai knew your dad, chances are, so did he.

Lets learn what we can about our old man, even if it's secondhand info.

>Oh, right.

Speaking of Jamil... you remind yourself that at one point, he and Kai were comrades during the Seventh Space War. If Kai knew your father, or at least knew OF him, chances are, Jamil did too. It never hurt to ask him, right?

You eventually make your way to Jamil's cabin, long after Ennil leaves, a good chunk of Kid's surplus cleaned out.

You knock on the door a few times, waiting for a repsonse.

"Who is it?"

"It's Dave, sir." you say.

"Come in, David." you hear Jamil say.

Sighing, you open the door and step inside.

"What do you need, David?" asks Jamil, who sets down a framed photo as he looks at you.

"I just wanted to talk..." you say, scratching the back of your head. "About my dad, I mean. Kai knew him, or at least knew of him... so maybe I thought you did too. I don't remember much about him, to be honest, so maybe, as one of his possible subordinates, you could tell me about him, even if it's only a little..."

"I see..." says Jamil, steepling his fingers as you sit down i a chair opposite to him.

"I wish I could say I really knew him, but that'd be a lie." he says, leaning back in his chair. "He never was one for sharing, except, well, when it came to his family. He'd always take whatever opportunities he could to call home, from what I heard..."

"Yeah..." you say, smiling. "Mom always did say he tended to tie up the phone lines..."

The two of you share a quick laugh at that before Jamil continues. You don't exactly learn much beyond what you already knew about him, or figured out for yourself, but it was nice to hear some confirmation from someone that was somewhat close to him.

You bid Jamil good night, and retire to your quarters for the evening. You eventually drift off to sleep, thoughts of your long deceased parents inhabiting your dreams that night...

>Going to call it quits here tonight; Thread traffic's at a dead stop, and we're dangerously close to the bump limit anyway. See you all next week with a new thread.
