Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

In the throne room if Aeolus's palace, you met an intimidating construct holding the Staff of Winds, the reason you journeyed to Xile in the first place. It took Flint as a knight of Aeolus's Order, and communicated that it would relinquish the staff, but only after being defeated in battle. It claimed Flint could use any means nessecary to do so, but after hearing Adavan's negative prediction on the outcome of a battle, you decided to back down and search for a way to counter the staff before attacking the construct.

Adavan theorized that the Moonsong, and ancient weapon created by Erebus, might be able to do just that. You've been collecting the shards of that sword along your journey, and, from a diary you viewed earlier, concluded that the shards were used by the Black Hand to catalyze the terrible magic that still lingers in Xile. Auriel balked at the prospect of repairing the Moonsong, but eventually gave in on the condition that, after using it to supress the Staff of Winds, you would destroy it. You agreed to do so, but privately decided that you'd cross the bridge when you got there.

You then found Aeolus's legendary treasure room in the bottom of the palace, completely unguarded. The party split up to investigate the golden horde. You briefly spoke with Abigail, but she had an unfortunate reaction to the succubus reagents you've been keeping on your person.

After spending the night, you found a scrap of paper in the palace library indicating that the key to creating new dynamos was their unique housing. It referenced a research center in the city located on the edge of the island. Anxious to investigate, and possibly find some form of functioning transport, you set out for the city.

You found the research center within the city, and a dynamo housing. It lay in the center of a room filled with torn and sundered skeletons. What appeared to be more shards of the moonsong rested within the globe.

You picked up the globe, and a terrible abomination left behind by the Black Hand immediately began to hone in on your position. At first, you planned to lure it back to the palace, so as to pit it against and weaken the construct guarding the Staff of Winds, but the plan proved too risky, and it engaged you in a brief and lethal battle. Just before it overwhelmed you, Temerity's power turned the tables. Abigail used her demonic abilities to destroy the dynamo house, releasing the shards, and destabilizing the magic keeping the creature whole.

Unfortunately, your earth dynamo was lost in the confusion of the battle, and Lucfier beat you to its location. He attempted to use it to counter and secure the staff of winds. As you tried to close in on him to ensure his plan failed, his plan did fail - the dynamo collapsed under the pressure of a huge cyclone summoned by the staff. You, Adavan, and Abigail were thrown into the winds.

Adavan vanished. Abigail lost her hand; it was lucky she didn't lose her life. You've managed to stabilize her with your healing magic.

In a stroke of fortune, the clash of magics destroyed the construct, and the staff was thrown clear. You've found it on the edge of the lake. As you cautiously examined it, Lucifer emerged from the trees, heavily injured, but alive.

>Dangerous and risky plans that rely entirely on dice + dragging much more squishy allies along for the ride is basically the major problem.

>SQ players either need to go in alone on their crazy plans, as they're the only character with any real chance of handling the consequences, or they should pick something more reasonable to do with their allies that plays to their strengths and weakness.

>I think Xile is a result of overconfidence over a major plot reveal about the MC and Abby's new powers along with a dose of TOO GREEDY and being too used to solo fighting.

Something from the QTG that I felt needed to be heard here. We aren't invincible and our allies even less so. Think things through. The dice hate us so we need to come up with plans that don't have high-risks of failure.

The edge of the lake is clear. With your enemies temporarily out of the way, you pour more magic into Abigail.

Her shallow breathing slows somewhat, and a bit of color comes back to her face. However - if you remember what Auriel said correctly - you can't make more blood for her. At least, not without very refined magic that you aren't capable of. She needs real rest, and lots of it.

You turn to the staff. Here it is, unguarded, embedded in the mud - but you can't be too careful. You bend all your senses forward.

It doesn't so much feel like Wind as much as it IS Wind itself. Crystallized wind. Air made solid.

It doesn't seem to be reacting any differently now that you're closer. You can't sense any magic around it, or any sort of connection to the lingering skysever. It feels distinctly different from that blood magic; it isn't tainted.

Leaves rustle behind you. You turn.

Lucifer comes out of the trees. You didn't sense him coming because his magic is like a weak flicker. He holds a hand to his stomach, somewhat staunching a flow of blood that streams from a gash there and down to his legs. His arms are shredded. You're surprised he can move them.

He stops and stares at you. You stare back.

What do you do?

>grab Abigail, grab the staff, and run. You can't take the risk that Lucifer will get the staff.
>just take Abigail and run, it's too risky to touch the staff before you're positively sure its safe.
>attack him; this is your best chance to end this once and for all.

>mana: 4/58

Ropes of orange mana snap out from you and fly toward Lucifer. You can feel him beginning his familiar teleport spell -

But his reactions are sluggish, and his spell feels cobbled together. Before he can warp, the ropes reach him, wrap around him once, twice. Their momentum carries him into a tree, and they pin him there like the sticky lines of a web of spirit.

He's managed to keep an arm free, and he produces a knife from his robes. Light and Lightning crackles on its edge as he begins to hack himself free as quickly as possible. It seems he really can't teleport while bound!

This...could be your chance to end him. Permanently.

What do you do?

I say we wait at the lake a while. Heal up, take more time to analyze the staff, wait for Abby to wake up, etc.
>>
>>27285518

As this is severely meta, it's in spoilers.

Well, actually, there is a wide variability in damage. The upper limits of the variability becomes greater along with the magnitude of the success or failure. So, a failure might result in you taking, for example, 1-5 damage. A bad failure, 3-8, a very bad failure, 6-12, etc. Obviously these numbers are effected by appropriate defense and offense values, the element of the spell, battle conditions, and so forth.

Shadow hasn't needed plot armor. His allies, however...

You move quickly. You slam Lucifer's arm into the tree. The knife flies into the bushes.

You envelope him.

Just before you do, he grins at you. "...Darkness is always the same...always trying to snuff out the light." You roll over his face, intending to cut off his words, but he manages to get in one last jab. "You'll never have peace, as long as you live. Sandalphon will make sure of - "

You crush his throat, and he gurgles on the last bit.

Your body opens and begins to chew away at him, first at the protective layer of magic that coats him like a shell, and then at his flesh. Ardor aids your efforts. A warped, twisting maw of black and white magic crushes and absorbs Lucifer and his soul into your being.

You draw back, and the binds of spirit fall slack, and vanish. Lucifer is no more.

This seems about right.

Having Pocket is good on its own, but it's also probably a good idea to be able to keep the Staff somewhere that nothing else can sense it while we're still somewhat vulnerable on our way back.

It has a relatively powerful magical signature, so being able to hide it somewhere that nobody can detect it seems incredibly useful.

To be honest. I see where they're coming from. Of course I feel that character death is a boring and cheap way to establish consequence and is really in the same vein of people who believe a conflict is only interesting if it's life-threatening.

We should have failed to get the staff. That's a much deeper consequence then an ally dying as it would have fucked up everything for a good long while.

You approach the staff.

The air is quiet. The winds are still. The waters of the lake lap gently on the muddy bank, still stirred up from when you used them to your advantage.

You reach a long, thin tendril out and touch the staff.

Nothing happens.

You get a firmer grip and pull it out of the mud with a squelch. You heft the object in your hands. It's as light as a feather.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maS186_LLn4

>you've acquired the Staff of Winds

You need a safe place for this - safer than any you've yet had. You channel the power you took from Lucifer into that task. An old sort of memory comes back to you...as if it's something you've done a hundred times before. Your body remembers, even if your mind doesn't.

You open your Pocket, and place the Staff of Winds within it.

For a short time. We don't want to risk getting stranded out here at night, even if we think the Erasure creatures might be gone, but if Adavan is in as bad of shape as Abby was post-cyclone, we owe it to him to at least try and see if we can find him.

Summon up our trusty Wisp and have him help search as well.

True, but we could at least say "Abigail's injured, Lucifer's dead, Staff of Winds is secured. Taking Abigail to City to recover, will then look for you."

Take a look about for Adavan. Get to safety before nightfall, though. Even if Adavan is dead, he's got a phylactery - his safety is much easier to ensure than Abby's.

>>
You order your Wisp to scout the land around you.

>mana: 12/58

You take up Abigail in your arms. She feels so frail.

You can't risk her like that again.

You move toward the city in a long, meandering path, calling for Adavan. Despite your efforts, you can't find him anywhere. Eventually, the shadows grow long. You can't take the risk of being caught alone in the dark. You hurry back to the city.

You find your allies holed up inside a building along the ruined wall. The inside is overgrown with grasses, but they've done a decent job of patching the holes and sealing it up. A temporary fortress to weather the night.

The group is grim when they hear what happened to Adavan. Vonnegut turns pale, and keeps to himself in a lonely corner. Ila takes it stoically. Flint visibly deflates.

Auriel sets to work on Abigail immediately. She does all she can, but Abigail does not awaken. Auriel tells you she could be like that for several days, depending on how much blood she lost, and even afterward she will need time to recover.

She tells you that repairing her lost hand in its entirety would be beyond anything but the capabilities of a team of angelic healers, preferably led by herself - and that it would only possible if the wound was fresh. The stump can never be regenerated.

Her voice is terse as she delivers this information. She doesn't look you in the eye. She isn't happy.

Night falls.

You can hear the sounds of the creatures drifting through the streets, but they don't seem to target your chosen domicile in particular. The group huddles around a few lights created by Auriel and Flint, too stressed and too nervous to fall asleep quickly. You sit near them, alongside Abigail, who is resting on a matted pile of grasses.

Do you say anything to any of your allies?

This is a reasonable point.

We're sort of stuck at that point where we know that everything we do is going to be dangerous, and also sort of know that we're not able to do it alone.

So we're stuck in a position where we know that if we try to keep our allies at arm's tendrils' length, eventually we're going to come up against something that outmatches us. But every time we

Maybe ask Auriel about her earlier days in command, and how she came to terms with the fact that her orders might lead to her comrades' injury or even death, but how her people would follow them regardless out of duty, camaraderie or both.

As much as we would love to have hundreds of years to amass the kind of knowledge we'd need to know the right thing to do, we really don't have that luxury, and we don't want our own inexperience to bring any more harm to our friends.

"We know that," Auriel snaps. "She doesn't have a hand because of you, Shadow. Adavan, at least, has a phylactery, but without his power and experience, our job here just became that much harder."

"Well, at least he got the staff," Flint says weakly.

"What does it matter if we all die in the process?!"

"I chose to follow Shadow," Ila says sharply. "I knew the risks. So did the girl."

"You're hardly more than a girl yourself," Auriel says. "All of you are young idiots that think you can rule the world with a snap of your fingers - because you can do a few magic tricks. Because you're the largest fish in your little ponds. I have seen the face of real power, and it does not suffer human life." Auriel turns to you. "Didn't Adavan say anything before you went in that damn cyclone? Didn't he tell you to turn back?"

<...he was hesitant.>

"But he trusted you," she said, "and you were wrong."

<Auriel...> You put your hands on your face. <You couldn't be more right. I'm sorry.>

Auriel, in the middle of drawing breath for another shout, hesitates. She lets it out slowly. "...sorry won't fix her hand, Shadow," she says quietly. "Sorry won't bring people back from the dead."

<...your experience vastly outweighs my own. While I feel that I've been leading us...you are more capable, both in skill and in your judgement of our limitations. Please...don't let me do this again.> You turn, and take in the sight of Abigail. Her hair is splayed messily across the ground. Her face is tight with some fevered dream. The room is silent for a long time.

"...I've never heard your real voice," Auriel says. "I didn't realize you had one."

<What?>

"Is that what you really look like, then?" Ila asks.

You realize they're all staring at you. You glance down. You're sitting in your human form. It takes a moment before you realize you spoke aloud, as well.

"You finally let your guard down," Vonnegut says. You glance at him. The fat man rubs his chin. "I'm surprised someone as cold-blooded as you would get so worked up about this."

"Stop acting as if you know Shadow," Flint says. "You have no idea what he's been through."

"...hmph. I know he killed and...consumed...my crew."

"They probably deserved it."

"So you consider Shadow the arbiter of right and wrong, then?" Vonnegut asks. "Who died and made him the final judge of human life?"

Ila throws you a hidden glance. You know what she's thinking - as Erebus, you actually have some claim to that line of thought. Your existence is greater than a human soul.

The thought bothers you. You can't even judge your closest allies properly.

"I'm not going to sit here and be lectured on morality by a -slaver-," Flint says.

"That's enough, both of you," Auriel says. They both mutter curses under their breath, but fall quiet.

Time passes. Most of the party falls asleep. Auriel is awake, though.

<...Highest.>

"...hearing my title from you sounds wrong in the extreme."

<Sorry.>

"Don't be. Just call me Auriel."

<Yeah.> You rub the back of your neck - your actual neck. <I don't have the luxury of centuries,> you say to her, <and I'm at a loss. Human life is delicate. Now I realize there are some things that only I can do. But without help, I fear I'll run across an obstacle that I cannot defeat alone. How can I reconcile these two facts? When you led troops in the war...how did you live with that responsibility? How did you deal with it?>

Auriel looks at you for a long time. "You don't deal with it, Shadow. You don't live with it. It happens, and then you just keep going, and try not to let it happen again." She turns back toward the light. It isn't a fire; it provides illumination, but no warmth. "I'm sorry I was short with you. The anger I directed your way earlier...is the same anger I feel toward myself every day." She glances back. "Involving normal people in conflicts of the scale only you and I can appreciate will inevitably get them killed. It's as simple as that. There is just too much magic, too much raw mana being thrown around. One false move, and those without the power to survive - or the skill to do something about it - are obliterated."

"You can leave your allies behind," she says. Her voice becomes more quiet. Her eyes stare at the flickering lights. Little reflective points sit in her eyes, dancing with the tiny spell. "Go it alone. Put the burden on your shoulders. If you aren't strong enough, you will break, but at least no one else will die. I wouldn't have survived the guilt of 700 years if I didn't do that. A lot of us didn't. It isn't public knowledge, but many angels have taken their own lives. We aren't meant to live so long. Maybe that's why things are the way they are. Only those of us hard and cold enough to take it are still around. We can't survive without something to blame. And how can you change - how can you admit you're wrong after using half the elements as your political and personal scapegoat for so long?"

She brushes her hair back behind an ear. "You recall when I faced the demon lord. I left my allies on the ship; I went alone. Such is the fate of those with great power. The power itself isolates us. The responsibility isolates us. That is life."

This said, I feel like this might actually be the right moment to tell her about the our Erebus connection.

Erebus distanced himself from those that would call themselves his allies, partly because deep down he thought they were a blight, but also because he only wanted to rely on his own strength. Temerity said as much when telling us why Humanity was a weakness.

We're trying to be different, we really are, but if all she has to say to us is "maybe you should just go it alone", it has to sting.

We don't WANT to go it alone. Having friends and allies shouldn't just make us weaker; force us to shelter and protect them exclusively. If all she has to tell us is that keeping allies close like this is the wrong thing to do, then she's wrong too, and we're going to try and find another way to do things. Because otherwise, what was the point of going against our programming in the first place.

I think we should reforge it with Humanity. That seems to be the direction with Shadow, and it seems to be our way of fixing the world. We'll take all of Erebus's awesome might, all of his darkness, and we'll remake it into something a little bit brighter. We'll be shadow. We'll do what right what Erebus did wrong. We'll take what he built and then shattered, and we'll reforge it into something better. I'm not even talking about just the sword at this point. He did the same thing to the world and to himself. We're fixing all of it through the use of our humanity.

Captain you are drunk.
>>
<Auriel...I have to tell you something. Abigail knows...and Ila...and Adavan. No one else.>

Auriel looks up from the light and blinks at you. "...what is it?"

<...I learned something about myself in the Archonium. I...> You steel yourself. <I am Erebus.>

Auriel says nothing.

You explain to her the details - the shards, the plan to break himself and then recombine to finish the job. Your battle against Temerity, your embracing of Humanity. And finally, your goal to be different, to be better. To become greater than what you were.

<So you see...> You glance at her awkwardly. After turning back to the lights while listening to your story, she still hasn't looked back at you. She still hasn't said anything. <Erebus isolated himself. I don't know all his reasons for that...but he thought he was different than everyone else. He insisted on relying only on his own strength, all the way to his...near-death. I can't do the same. I need you. I need Sir Flint, and Abigail, and Ila, and Adavan, and Obis...you have to keep me grounded. I'm afraid that if I don't have you, I'll lose something. I'll stay back toward what I was.>

"I tried so hard to convince myself that wasn't the case," she whispers. "I really wanted to believe you weren't..." She rubs a hand on her forehead. "What the hell. Dear Light, what the fucking hell."

<I'm not going to be like him,> you say. <He broke the world. He broke the great lords. He broke himself. But in the remaking...something got in. My Humanity has allowed me introspection. I am different. I will be different. I won't make his mistakes. I...will love.> You glance at Abigail. <I will never do what he did.>

Auriel looks at you. "Alright," she says. "Prove it."

<...yes?>

"In the morning, we'll have Flint use the staff to breach the skysever," she says. "Then you can fly us out. But you leave the shards of that thing behind." She points at your satchel. "Leave the old magic where it belongs. Start with a clean slate."

Not that I disagree with the symbolism, but I'm just gonna straight up talk about meta here.

We've been building this fucking sword for sixty-five threads. Our reward was gonna be a sword of ass-kicking. If we're going to give up our sword of ass-kicking, we're getting SOME reward out of it, mechanically. And not some pussy philosophical "the value of friendship" reward.

Alternatively, we could reforge it into a hammer. Those can be used for building, right?
>>
>>27287749
We didn't. He obviously knew something was up but we just never had the time to approach the subject with him like everyone else. Too caught up in getting the staff and such.
>>
<I have a better idea,> you say. <I'll erase them so that they are never used again.>

Auriel nods. "Do it."

You withdraw the shards from your satchel...they hum with power, and align themselves into the shape of the completed blade.

"...I always wondered what it said," Auriel states.

<The Song of the Moon, the Void Twixt Stars,> you read. <The Destruction of Chaos.>

You roil over the blade, extending the inner tendrils with which you strip flesh and consume souls.

It doesn't dissolve.

You press harder, but the sword resists you. It's like trying to chew a rock. You simply can't break it down.

"What's wrong?"

<...I can't...> You press once more, then draw back. <I can't consume it.>

She sighs. "I see. Well...guard it carefully. We can separate the pieces once more when we have time. Preferably at the bottom of the sea."

What do you do now?

You keep watch through the night, allowing Auriel to get some sleep.

It's a long night. You spend most of your time glancing nervously between Abigail and the shards of the sword you were unable to consume.

The things in the dark don't leave you alone, but they don't make any inroads into your little fortress. Eventually, day comes again.

Your friends eat the berries they'd saved from before. Abigail still slumbers. Auriel tends to her, dripping water down her throat using a strip of torn cloth.

Your focus expands through the hazy interference of the winds.

There's much less magic to be felt, now, or so it seems. Wind still lingers everywhere in the air, but the darkness of the night has receded back to the underbelly of the island. A fierce core of wind swirls down there, deep in the underground. It is still joined by that point of darkness.

The darkness hums at you.

A shard of the Moonsong? The final piece...you're almost certain it's there.

Unfortunately, you don't feel a hint of Spirit aside from Abigail. Adavan is either in hiding...or worse.

Ok, so what else is instantly lethal to living things (Chaos), but not to us (Order)? And what is the only other thing we've seen that we consume?

Mana pools.

It could be that the sword is so power-dense that attempting to eat it is functionally the same as trying to eat raw mana, but it could ALSO be that the sword is made out of crystallized mana or something like that.

Make sure that we bring him out into the open before he tries this. We know from observing the Construct's use of it that the Staff starts out at low power and ramps up, but we can't know whether it will behave similarly when used by a novice.

Later that morning, Abigail awakens. She's weak, but capable of walking. She remains quiet. You help her move, letting her lean on your shoulder. You're unable to muster a direct apology.

You move to an open space outside the city, toward the edge of the island. You and Flint stand separated from the party by a good fifty yards.

You take the staff out of your Pocket.

>mana: 28/58

<Alright.> You proffer the staff to him.

Flint gingerly takes it in his fingers. He grins from ear-to-ear. "By the elements, Shadow, I've got it in my hands!" He grips it tightly, staring at it. "Well...what should I do?"

<...I'm not sure. Try to push magic through it? Direct it at the barrier.> You indicate the silent wall of hazy gray-blue that marks the edge of Xile.

"Right. Ok. Can do. Let's see." Flint holds the staff in both hands and points the tip at the barrier. He closes his eyes and focuses hard. You feel Light spread across and through the staff.

Nothing happens. The staff glows with white Light, but there's no reaction of Wind.

"Hold on, let me try again."

Several attempts later, it seems Flint is completely ineffectual with the staff. The two of you walk back to the party and explain what happened.

"Maybe it requires Wind to activate?" Auriel reasons.

"Anyone in the party know Wind magic?" Vonnegut asks. Everyone stands there awkwardly, glancing about. There is a distinct lack of raised hands. "Well, fuck!" the thief shouts. "What the hell do we do now?!"

"...sorry," Flint mutters. He rolls the staff in his hands. A dark, sullen look lingers on his face.

"...what..." Abigail coughs slightly, then clears her throat. "What about the Moonsong? Could we use that?"

<...I sensed the last shard in the bottom of the island, near the core of the skysever,> you say. <At least, I think that's what they are.>

"...dammit," Auriel whispers.

"If that's what is necessary," Ila says, "then it must be done."

If Aeolus was as covetous as we've heard he was, there's no way he'd leave open access to the core of the island anywhere but his own personal abode.

>>27288883
Auriel was Spirit, overridden by Light IIRC.
>>
>>27288890

This also gives us an opportunity to head back to the treasure room and pull a Scrooge McDuck for a little while while looting the coffers.

Naturally, we'd be doing so while hiding in a nice dark place (under piles of treasure) in order to help recuperate.

Pocket gives us 81 cubic meters of storage, which is an absolutely absurd amount of room when we're filling it with trinkets and baubles.

It's probably more than enough to get Flint on his way to reestablishing his Knight Order, getting Haven properly outfitted and protected, maybe even getting airships repaired (give or take a dynamo, depending on if we can research what makes them tick after this trip), as well as assorted other expenses.
>>
>>27288956
But we could use another mage and his element as a scape goat!
I thought this was why we asked Auriel for advice?

>>
>>27289017
Presumably it would be done best by stuffing containers full of things, and then putting the containers in the Pocket.

Fill a large tapestry with coins, gems, jewelery and whatnot, tie it shut, and put the "bag" into our Pocket, for example.
>>
>>27289049
True. But even then, we can't take the whole place without using up extra mana so having our anchor there would be best. Especially since we may need to go back to Xile when we're all not half dead anyways.
>>

Alright, time to line your pockets.

Magical items located in the treasury:

-----

Firstly, there are three pairs of bracers and swords similar to the ones Flint has taken that increase the speed of strikes. He's currently using it at normal speed due to not being used to it.

There is a large two-handed sword that resonates with wind. It isn't fast, but it minorly ignores elemental resistances, and strongly ignores earth.

There is a second passive-aggressive cape.

There are four sets of adamantium armor that are resistant to all types of magic, but spirit and shadow more than average (not invincible, just resistant). Each one is made of the typical greenish-grey metal that is adamantium, and engraved with the old symbol of Aeolus's Order.

There are five rings. Four of these are enchanted with a minor protection against shadow. One of them protects against Shadow, Spirit, Earth, and Water. It is powerfully enchanted.

There is a tiara that you're fairly certain guards against mind-related magic.

-----

And that's it for magical things. Auriel estimates the treasury as about half or so of what is kept at the Ring City, a horde gathered over 700 years.

But do you touch anything magical, or simply put mundane treasures in your pockets? Earlier, we very pointedly decided to avoid one of the rings. Auriel maintains that, Flint excepting, you should not touch any of the magical items.

What do you do?
>>
>>27289140
>What do you do?
Have Flint put all of the magical items into a large, decidedly un-magical container, which we can then place into our Pocket for his later perusal.
>>
>>27289140
Let's go for just mundane stuff right now. Buy Teleport and set an anchor. We can come back with a team to analyze/disarm any traps when we know it's
>>
>>27289140
Let us listen to Auriels advice in this matter.
>>
>>2728914
Equip Flint and Auriel with some of these Shadow resistant artifacts and then go search for Adavan.
>>
>>27289140
We can just buy Teleport and get this stuff later I guess?

Stick with normal stuff for now.
>>
>>27289167

>>
>>27289140

>>27289166

>>
>>27289166
That seems like a very good idea, but we should ask Auriel first.
>>
>>27289140

we should save a set of the armor to make an awesome robot
>>
Y'know.

If we stick anyone into our pocket after this, they're gonna be a bit concerned.
>>
>>27289166
At least raise it as a possibility first.

But yeah get Teleport.

Also, does Teleport work retroactively regarding Mana Pools we touched?
>>
>>27289167
>>27289179
Or yeah, we could also do the reasonable, responsible thing instead of hoping any potential retributive defensive magic acknowledges that we have defeated it on a technicality.

It'd be a shame to return only to find that all the good stuff was looted by stray Angels, lost without the guidance of their leader, though.

>>27289232
Hoarders: Venia.
>>
>>27289232
I don't know, I'd say gold is one of the more reasonable things to store in an inter-dimensional pocket.
>>

>>
>>27289140
to everyone saying that we can come and get it later: I think it MAY be a possibility that the islands of xile could become destabalized and fall after we end the skyserver. just a thought. but when we end the skysever, and if xile is still there, why not relocate haven to xile?
>>
>>27289259
I doubt the angels can get inside without a Flint.

You travel back to the palace. You lay Abigail down on one of the couches in the treasure room. She smiles at you, then closes her eyes and relaxes. Even though you carried her most of the way, the short trip tired her.

You ask Auriel about the magical items.

"Look, how many times do I have to tell you?" she says. "Don't touch a damn thing."

<Well...what if we have Flint put all the magical items in a mundane container, and I secure them that way?>

Auriel squints at you. "Shadow, do you really think that they wouldn't have thought of that?"

<Well...I mean, maybe - >

Auriel sighs, shakes her head, and walks away.

<You can't prove anything either way!> you shout after her.

"You keep your slimy tentacles off anything with so much as a hint of magic!" she calls back.

You stand there, in the middle of the treasure room, a bit taken aback.

"It's ok, Shadow," Ila says. "I don't think you're slimy."

You decide you've finished talking for the moment.

What do you do?

<Well...just because I can't touch anything magical, doesn't mean I'm helpless.> You walk over to Vonnegut. <How do you feel about a business proposition?>

He eyes you warily. "That depends. What are you proposing, exactly?"

<That we take as much of this treasure as I can carry.>

Vonnegut's face lights up like a little minature Sun Call. "I think I can do that."

<Start putting as much treasure as possible on containers. Wrap it in tapestries, stuff it in chests, boxes - anything. Then I can store it in my Pocket.>

"How large can they be?"

You think for a moment. <Very large.>

"Then watch this."

IceVonnegut waves his hands, using his arms to to direct the growth and movement of frozen water as it crystallizes from midair. A tide of gold begins to build as he sweeps it toward the center of the room. The rumbling clinking of coins and jewels rolls up into a giant mountain, and he then seals in the massive pile into a giant block of ice.

"Have fun," he says.

You place a hand on the frozen block of treasure and move it into your Pocket. It all vanishes in one go.

>mana: 27/58

<That was effective.>

"When it comes to money," Vonnegut says, "I'm your man." He promptly sits himself down on one of the couches and lounges back with his hands behind his head. "Let me know when we're actually going to do something to get off this fucking rock. Treasure's no good if I can't spend it."

This seems like a good course of action.

As far as the apology goes, not too self-effacing. We know what happened was our fault, and we're not going to hide from our decisions. We're just going to have to do them better from now on.

Even if she forgives us, that doesn't mean we're allowed to take our decisions lightly. The shit we do has consequences.

>>27289830
It's more like we valued the relationship that we have with him as it is, and it's been sort of keeping us from breaking the news for worry that it'll change things.

But we're at the point where we're kind of realizing that it's a bit of a dick move to continue keeping it from him, and that, I mean, c'mon, if Auriel can understand, what the hell have we been so trepidatious about.
>>
>>27289830
We could not tell him at all. That way when we reach the climactic boss fight against Hyperion, he can be like, "You think you know Shadow, Sir Flint? Did he ever tell you what he really was? That -he- is Erebus?"
"N-no. Shadow would have told me, we're best friends!"
"Search your heart, you know it to be true!"
"SHADOW WHHHHYYY"

And then we have to frantically win back a temporary alliance with Flint to finish the job, though our friendship never really recovers.

You approach Flint on the other side of the room. He's eyeing the two-handed sword. "Hey, Shadow. You know, I think this two-handed sword might be more my style. It's not as fast, but..." He gives it a test swing. Dust on the stone floor is swept back in with a little flare of wind. "This is large, but my main focus has always been a two-handed blade anyway."

<Sir Flint.>

He looks back at you. "...alright. Whenever you use my title, something's up." He glances away, then back. "Does this have to do with the Archonium?"

<More than a little.>

You give Flint the full explanation. He plants the sword in the grout between stones and leans on it as he listens to you. His facial expression cycles through several emotions - set grim, a raised eyebrow, confusion. By the time you finish, he's settled on a flat neutral.

<...so...that's everything.>

Flint picks up his sword and gives it another test swing. "Yeah, I think I'm going with this one. That speedy little rapier is interesting...but it's just not me."

<...it does suit you.>

He nods. "Anything else?"

<Not really.>

He shrugs. "Ok then." He folds into his forms, swinging his sword to and fro. Without the parasite to hold him back, he is neat, precise, and elegant in his motions - as he was when no one was around, when you first met him.

<...thanks, Flint.>

Flint just keeps working the blade.

<No, Abigail. It's my fault. This -> gesture to her arm <and Adavan... I knew how strong you were, but I also knew how little true combat experience you possessed. I'm used to the chaos of conflict. Making snap decisions, changing course at a moments notice, maintaining concentration while I'm literally ripped apart.>

<I knew you weren't. But I didn't understand, or worse, I didn't care. I tried to use you and your power. I tried to wield you like a weapon to bludgeon our foes into submission.>

Nobody should ever NEED to be as strong as you say you wish you were. Nobody should have to shoulder it all on their own, even if they really, really want to. You couldn't rely on me to support you, and I'm sorry for that.

You hold Abigail in your arms. <It's not your fault, Abigail. It isn't your fault.>

"But I - "

<Stop,> you say. The guilt is crushing you. You can't take another apology from her. <Please. It wasn't you. It wasn't.>

She cries into your chest, but says nothing else.

<...I'm the one who should be sorry,> you say. <I was so busy with trying to keep Lucifer from getting the staff that I didn't take you and Adavan into consideration. He even told me we should have waited. Sometimes...I forget...that you aren't like me. I forget...how fragile life is.> Abigail tries to say something, but you stop her. <No. It was my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you or him that hard. This...> You look at her arm. <This is because of me. You trusted me...and I took that for granted. I...I'm no better than your uncle.>

"Don't say that," she says. Her voice cracks as she mumbles into your chest. "You're nothing like him. You...you care."

<I'm sorry, Abigail. I'll...> You place a gentle hand on her arm. <We can find a way to make this better. I'll find a way. I promise.>

Her tears slowly stop. She takes one long sniff, then looks up at you. "I'm going to get stronger, Shadow. I...I'm going to learn. And then I'll be able to support you. And then..."

<You don't have to be stronger, Abby,> you say. <Being yourself...is enough. I'm tired of people wanting to make you stronger. Wanting to use you. I don't want to use you like that.>

"...I'm making this decision, not you," she says. "Maybe...maybe this was to much. Maybe I wasn't ready. But I can fix that. Next time...next time, I'll be there for you." She puts a hand on your cheek. "I won't let you try and take it all yourself. No matter what. I won't let you become what you were in the past. Like Erebus. You aren't him. You're Shadow."

Abigail holds herself up against you. "Shadow...I...um..."

Control Tower, with at least Flint coming along. We should be able to read the labels because of our Translate skill, and Flint should probably be able to operate them because of his bloodline.

If Xile is afloat because of a dynamo-like core, hell, maybe the control tower can pilot the whole goddamn island like an airship. Only one way to find out.

There could be island-wide security measures (a la the picture diaries, but in real-time? Who knows.) as well that we might be able to use to pinpoint either Adavan, the remaining angelic contingent, or a way down into the depths of the island.

Speaking of Geb. i assume, from the hints SM has graced us with, that we were
A) present during the battle between him and hyperion
B) either in league with hyperion, or not participating to help geb

Now, this makes me think that if we should ever free geb, he will likely try his very hardest to stomp us in non-existence. so it might be a good idea to hold off on freeing geb until we either get our memory back, or have some way of convincing him not to stomp us on sight. we might be powerful, but i get the feeling we'd be unable to take sandalphon one on one right now, and he's only the top dog servant of an elemental titan.

SM, if you retconned us into screwing geb over after we voiced our idea to save him, i am dissapointed, since i thought it was a great idea when it was raised. or i might be paranoid.

Just food for thought/discussion

You explain your plan to Auriel.

She nods, rubbing her chin. "To be perfectly honest, I could use a rest with all the healing I've been doing, and Abigail couldn't summon a fly. Stay quiet. Don't take any unnecessary risks."

<Understood.>

You and Flint head out of the palace and around the side. The control tower seems to be its own separate island floating above the rest. A protrusion of buildings hands from a cliff just below. There doesn't appear to be any immediate way to reach the control tower proper - it's floating quite a ways up from the highest point.

You reach an entrance lower down and enter the complex from there. The hallways are silent. The decor matches the palace - pale white lighting, still working after so long. It keeps the teal and green rugs nearly painfully bright.

"Shadow," Flint hisses. He points into an open room nearby.

You glance in. A fire is flickering in a hearth. You sense no life, but there's also a half-eaten meal scattered about on the table.

Someone else - maybe more than one person - lives in this place.

What do you do?

Flint being here is justifiable, what with his being a descendent of Aeolus' order, and also having possession of the Staff of Winds in the aftermath of the Guardian being challenged for it. (That counts, right? Flint got it after the challenge had ended, which means he won the challenge, naturally.)

As long as we stay reasonably undetected, I feel like we could probably investigate further.
>>
>>27291393
>magical senses which don't generate a ping

That doesn't exist. You have a short-range, less obtrusive method of analysis in your normal Focus. Analyze can assist you in discerning the specific properties of an object or in looking for traps, but isn't really a form of magical detection.

You use Shadowmeld.

Flint glances around. "...uh...Shadow?"

<I am here.>

"...where?"

<Here.>

Flint sighs. "I'm getting this odd feeling of deja vu... "

<Stay quiet. Let's move ahead.>

"Right."

You creep along the hallway, you pass several intersections, and eventually run into a set of stairs at their end. You notice several more rooms that have signs of inhabitants, including more bits of food, turned blankets, and potted berry bushes placed under the bright chandeliers.

The stairs are heading up - the right direction - so you take them as well.

It's long before you begin to hear the sound of voices.

"What is that?"

<I don't know. Stay quiet.>

Flint nods. You walk up the stairs and find yourself in a walled stone courtyard. The center of the yard has been dug up, revealing the dirt underneath, and it's planted with long even rows of the berry bushes. More buildings surround you, blocking a wider view of the island. Almost directly above is the wide stalactite that forms the bottom of the control tower.

The chanting is coming from somewhere past the buildings. You put a finger to your mouth at Flint. He nods again. You note a set of stairs in one alley that appears to lead to the rooftops, and you take that path, hoping to get a bird's-eye view. The voices swiftly grow in volume as you get above the walls.

>con't
>>
>>27291676

>>
You and Flint walk along the crumbled rooftops, weaving between planters filled with more berry bushes. There seems to be an intricate system of makeshift gutters and barrels scattered along the roofs, likely to catch and channel rainwater. So far, it's been totally calm in Xile, so there must be a drought. You wonder why they don't just go to the lake - but then, a fortified holdout like this so separated from the dangers of the island would be intentionally self-sufficient.

Another courtyard spreads beneath you, nearly three times as large as the last. You and Flint go prone and crawl to the edge of a thin rock.

At least a hundred leaf-wearing natives are gathered in the courtyard, circled around one man in the middle. Many of them are shouting with their hands cupped to their mouths, pointing. A few are jeering or take a definite mocking tone. His hands are bound behind his back, and he is stripped naked. There is a large rope gathered in the middle of the clearing.

Flint prods you, then indicates his mouth. He tilts his head questioningly.

<A lot of things,> you translate. <They're making fun of him. I think he's a criminal.>

Another man steps from the crowd. He's wearing less leaves and roped hemp and actual robes. He holds a wooden staff. Your senses tell you it's imbued with substantial amounts of wind magic.

What do you do?

>wait and watch
>head back while they're all in one place
>something else

Don't be a greedy fuckhead. That's what caused all the issues of the last few threads.

He's about to be reverse-hanged. Time to step in.
>>
>>27292134
Holy fuck, lighten up it was a joke.
>>
>>27292154
Yeah, no. We are not jumping in to stop a hanging we don't even have the details of and getting fucked over by a bunch of wind mages. Just observe for now.
>>
>>27292151
I can second this.
>>
>>27292064
>>wait and watch
So this seems like a hanging, but we don't know WHY quite yet.

People tend to blab on and on about why the accused is being executed before going through with these kinds of things, right? Let's wait and see if they say WHY this guy's getting axed.

If it seems absurd, maybe tell Flint what's going on, and see if he would rather get going before the grisly business or try and leverage his status as an honorary Knight of the Order to try and talk some sense into them.

It'd be interesting if they're having him hanged for being on duty and letting the Staff get lost, because then Flint could REALLY get him off the hook if he felt like doing so.
>>
>>27292064
Wait a minute.
HOLY CRAP!
ADAVAN!
>>
>>27292159
Look what happened with the last funny joke. The bit where everything went to shit with the Black Hand monstrosity was hilarious.

Or how people picked the tunnel underground option because "LOL VOGS R FANNY"

You're the kind of person that's ruining this quest.

>passing up an opportunity to gain another follower
If we get enough, we won't have to be worried about them dieing.
>>
>>27292223

It would have been quite plain if the naked man was a skeleton.
>>
>>27292223
One would assume that SM would tell us it was Adavan.
We'd recognize him, you know?
>>
>>27292232
It's risky. He might be a legitimate criminal and we can't just jump in without thinking things through or getting info.

>>27292224
You aren't helping, anon. You won't get through to people by being an asshole.

Ah yes, I'll go ahead and be super serious all day 'rryday then. I was unaware that the quest I've been following since day 1 was now a no fun allowed zone.

OR

I could just go on posting like I always have and just ignore you.

Curse you SM for getting me emotionally invested in this quest.

You place a hand on Flint's back, clearly indicating to him to stay down. He gives you just a slight nod, and hunkers down closer to the edge of the roof.

The man raises two palms. The crowd quiets. He holds his staff before himself with two hands, then plants it firmly into the ground.

The large pile of rope begins to rise. It uncoils rapidly, wavering slowly like a brown snake responding to the call of a charmer. It rises higher, higher, up, up. The crowd is silent as they watch. A few minutes later, you see it turn about the bottom of the floating control tower and tie itself off tightly.

The man lowers the staff. He produces a knife, cuts the man's bonds, and shouts one word. "Climb!"

The man grips the rope. He works it in his hands, and swallows. The silence is deafening.

"CLIMB!"

"Climb!"
"Climb the rope!"
"Climb it!"
"Climb! Climb! Climb!"

Sweat pours off the man as he grips the rope and begins to ascend. He uses his arms and legs together, moving as fast as possible.

The crowd chants in the background, their voices rising with the man's progress. "Climb! Climb! Climb! Climb!"

The man hasn't even made it a tenth of the way up when you feel the winds begin to churn. The crowd chants. The wind rises. Faces appear in the air, ugly, twisted shapes that remind you sharply of the shadow abomination. They converge on the man in an instant.

His screams echo over the chanting courtyard as the winds tear him to shreds.

His blood and innards rain down over the people in the courtyard. The natives raise their hands and open their mouths. They look distinctly happy as the blood and guts fly down onto them, spraying them in a shower of human remains.

You turn to look at Flint. He looks back at you, horrified.

Literally no one else but you took it seriously. You are deliberately and purposefully drawing attention to his statement and behaving in an attitude that makes people mad at you and thus to argue and disagree with you.

You are making the problem worse. Calm down and state your opinions like a reasonable human being instead of yelling at people and making your side of the argument look bad.
>>
>>27292382
I see, an Indian rope trick, and the trick is that you die.
These people are pretty fucked up.

Thanks for the thread, SM.

Today was pretty depressing, but in a good way. I think we really needed to wallow in our failures for a while. I hope the lesssons learned stick. People seem to be jumping in the complete opposite extreme now too, though. I guess it's too be expected after all that.

>Worshiping the Skysever

I wonder what would happen if a totally-not-a-shadow-in-human-form successfully climbed the rope?
>>
>>27292404
>I see, an Indian rope trick, and the trick is that you die.
I found this a lot funnier than I probably should have.
>>
>>27292403
>Literally no one else but you took it seriously.
Because I called it out as retarded instantly. If I hadn't, other retards may have very well latched onto the idea and we would have been storming the group to eat the staff.
>>
>>27292468
Well, you're certainly self-important.
>>
>>27292468
That post is so ironic it gave me conjunctivitis.
>>
>>27292468
If you were actually paying attention you would have noticed no one even commented on it except you and decided to watch and wait.

Furthermore, I tried to explain to someone who wanted to step in to stop the execution that it would be a bad idea. Where were you? You jumped at something to yell at and that was it. Calm down and be reasonable.
>>
>>27292541
I am being reasonable. The most unreasonable course of action possible right now is to do nothing when people make retarded 'joke' suggestions, especially after all the shit that went down over the last couple threads.
>>
>>27292541
I still think we should have saved him. However, I will admit watching them gave some useful insight.

Crest

If you use anything else you're a fucking heretic and deserve to burn in hell forever.

UltraBrite is acceptable.

I guess we'll see.
