Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a student in the Sturmfuhrer Academy a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program.

You also found out that your squad sniper, Morgan, is actually a girl posing as a boy, for reasons still unstated. However, you agreed to keep the whole thing a secret from the rest of the your squad.

You also found out in the middle of your training that you had a hidden dark side, a destructive bloodlust that triggers whenever you see someone you care about get hurt. Thankfully, you've been taking special training to suppress that urge, so it really shouldn't be a problem in the foreseeable future.

You've now graduated from Tier One, and now are an official part of the Demons of Randgriz. Not only does this meant that your school days are over, but also that you're now expected to fight when called on.

And that time came rather quickly, as you were called upon to eliminate a group of troublesome pirates, though it was a relatively simple mission. However, now you're being sent on an actual campaign in exotic an exotic land across the Atlantic called San Salvacion...

It wasn't long before the Kestrel finally reached San Salvacion, where you and the rest of the Demon detachment assigned to this area were dropped off at Vitoze, San Salvacion's southernmost military base, which was quite literally in the middle of nowhere. From what you could gather, Vitoze was essentially the first and last line of defense in the event of a full scale Erusean invasion.

While the ground forces would be offloaded and stationed in Vitoze, the air complement was going to stay with the Kestrel, where it was believed the planes and air crew would be safer.

This also meant this would probably be the last chance you can see Lara in while. Then again, you've got a lot to catch up on...

You decide to go find Lara before the Kestrel departs. Fortunately for you, the Kestrel was still grounded because it was loading up its now empty transport bays with extra supplies like ragnoline and extra parts for the planes and the standard stuff like food and water.

You see Lara and some of other Demon pilots chatting it up with the Vitoze pilots, no doubt trading stories and boasting about who's fighters were better. Glancing at the hangars, you see the San Salvacion Air Force was using Emmerian-made fighters, like the top of the line Mustang and the older Clydesdale.

"Lara! Hey!" You wave to your sister as you approach.

"Oh! Lucas! Just in time!" Lara runs up to you. "Quick question, which nickname for me do you think is better? Ribbons or Mobius?"

"Ummmm..."

"Well, if you want my opinion, I think Ribbons sounds a lot cuter, so I guess it'd fit you more." You shrug. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, it's just that the Salvacion pilots here caught sight of the ribbon on my plane's tail and they just started calling me 'Ribbons', and it sort of stuck. And yeah, it does sound a lot more feminine, right?"

"Yeah." You nod. "Anyways, I know we're going to be going our separate ways soon, so I was just here to say a proper goodbye..."

"Hey, don't say things like that!" Lara frowns. "I don't want you putting death flags on me or yourself!"

"The what flags?"

"Anyways," Lara smiles and holds your hand. "Edge says we just fighting some jungle rebels, so they don't even have an air force. And even if Erusea got involved, they don't have a very good air force in the first place. We'll be fine! In fact, it'll probably be use bailing you guys out of trouble!"

"So, what do you think about the Emmerian planes here?" You ask, nodding to the planes being kept in their protective hangars. "How do they stack up to ours?

"Well, the Emmerians seem to have some pretty good flight engineers on their side." Lara shrugs. "The Mustang could probably match the Falcon in a straight up fight. The Falcon's more maneuverable but the Mustang has the edge in raw speed. The Clydesdale is basically their version of the Eagle, though slower but a bit more armored. All in all they're pretty good planes to have as backup. The only problem is the pilots...

"Like what?"

"Well, it's not like I don't like them or anything, the Salvacion pilots have been nothing but extremely nice." Lara frowns. "But none of them have really seen any combat, and even though the Emmerians help out a bit, their training standards aren't up to ours."

"Sounds serious." You say as you glance at the foreign pilots, who are still ogling at the Kestrel.

"Yeah, well, hopefully they won't have fly in the first place." Lara shrugs.

"Hey! Lara! We're taking off in five!" Edge yells.

"Sorry, but I gotta go. It was great seeing you, and good luck on the ground!" Lara says, giving you a kiss on the cheek.

"Good luck in the air!" You smile as Lara prances off back to her squadron.

You turn back to the Wraiths' staging area and you see everybody pretty much their own thing in Simo's absence.

Simo himself has walked off with Menendez and the other team leaders towards what you assume is Vitoze's HQ building, with Morgan trying to inconspicuously follow them. The Twins, Mary-Kate and Bragg are apparently up to some scheme, scribbling down some kind of schematic. You see Sparky being chased by Edwin. Well, you better go check up on what the hell Sparky and Edwin are up to. By the time you reach the staging point, Sparky has managed to shake Edwin and is hiding behind a crate while Edwin, with a sour look on his face, prowls the area looking for her.

You manage to quietly sneak over to Sparky. She nearly yelps in fright when she sees you approach, but manages to catch herself by covering her mouth.

"Lucas, what are you doing here!??!" She whispers.

"What are YOU doing, Sparky?" You whisper back.

"Well, you know, I sort a picked Edwin's pocket like I do to everyone I meet-"

"Wait, even me? Is that why my wallet was missing for two days?!?" You whisper harshly.

"Sorry about that! At least I didn't take ALL the money in, right?"

"UGH, we'll worry about that later. What's going on?!"

"Well, usually Edwin doesn't make too big a deal of the stuff I swipe from him. Mostly just cheap trinkets, so I think he expects me to snag them. But today, I got something really nice and he just went BALLISTIC." Sparky pulls out a tiny lockbox. "Whatever it is is pretty damn valuable to him! If only we could open it..."

"I think I can help." You whisper back. "Edwin's not looking for me, so I can smuggle it over to Falynn."

"Cool, thanks man." Sparky grins. "I'll keep him busy till then."

You nod, pocket the lockbox, and make your way to where Falynn is, hoping that Edwin won't notice you.

Even though Edwin probably wouldn't suspect you, you didn't want him catching sight of you anyways, just in case. Fortunately, you manage to use the crates to your advantage to sneak your way around him while he stalks the area for Sparky. You see the look on his face while he does so, and it's both angry and... desperate, maybe? You're not quite sure, but it definitely unsettles you.

Nonetheless, you manage to reach Falynn without being spotted.

"Hey! Hey Falynn!" You whisper.

"Hm? Lucas?" Falynn turns to face you. "What do you need?"

You turn the lockbox over in your hands, your unease still not going away. Once you do this, there's no going back. You're not sure whether you should go through with this or not.

"Um, actually..." You quickly stash the lockbox back into your pocket so Falynn wouldn't be able to see it. "I was just sort of wonder what you and the others were working on."

"Oh, we're trying to design a makeshift distillery for uh... scientific reasons. Yeah, scientific reasons." Falynn says. "Very technical stuff."

"I'm sure..." You narrow your eyes. Suspicious, especially with the Twins involved, but you didn't have time to press for more. "Well, don't get into too much trouble then!"

You then spin on your heal and sneak back to to where Sparky is hiding.

"Hey, so did you crack it open, yet?" Sparky says with a grin.

"Sparky..." You sigh and hand the lockbox back to her. "I can't do it. I saw the look on Edwin's face and... I just couldn't do it."

"What? But he's an asshole, nobody likes him!"

"Well, I admit Edwin does behave like a jerk, but I think it's because he doesn't know how to act any other way." You say. "Either way, whatever is in here is important to him. And I can't just breach his trust like this. Just... give it back to him and apologize."

"Sparky, you stole it, it's your responsibility." You say sternly. "I hope this encourages you not to steal in the future."

"No guarantees." Sparky pouts. "What if tries to take a swing at me?"

"Don't worry, I'll back you up if that happens." You assure her. "Just go."

So, Sparky reluctantly stands up and takes the lockbox from you. She then slowly makes her way over to Edwin, with you following close behind.

"H-hey, Edwin. Ummm, I sorry about stealing this." Sparky says abashedly, meekly handing the lockbox back to him.

Edwin, to his credit, looks surprised, but then he looks past her to you, and then every clicks together, and he slowly accepts the lockbox.

"Thank you for giving it back, Sparky." Edwin says, just as awkwardly as Sparky.

"Lucina, are you all right?" You say as you get up.

"I'm fine." Lucina nods. She's already got her battle rifle and armor on. Of course she'd be prepared for an ambush.

You then dash over to where you saw Edwin and Sparky take cover, and have to suppress the urge to snicker when you see the both of them tangled together as they tried to dive to the same spot. However, you had no time for playful quips and you and Lucina quickly pull them apart.

"What the hell is going on?!" Sparky wails.

"I should figured the Eruseans would try and ambush us." Edwin sighs. You just now notice that he's actually wearing his lancer armor, too.

"We need a plan of action." Lucina remind you all, as mortar lances are still falling and they're starting to get more accurate. Even worse, you can hear sporadic gunfire, which means the enemy was starting to close in.

"We get our gear and we fight!" You say. Fortunately you set your M60 and its ammo down near you so it's easy enough to pick up. However, you've got to figure out what to do. Unlike Edwin and Lucina, you're still wearing your basic fatigues, and so is Sparky. You also don't remember anybody else having put their armor on, either.

"We have to link up with the others." You say to your current team. "I'll provide suppressing fire while the rest of you link up with them. Got it?"

Lucina, Edwin, and Sparky nod.

"Stay behind me." Edwin mutters to Sparky. "I'm armored, and you're not."

"R-right." Sparky nods.

As the other three dash their way to where you last saw the Twins, Mary-Kate, and Bragg, you take up a position near a pile of crates and go prone with your M60, keeping a close eye on the perimeter. The mortar bombardment was beginning to lighten up, which could either mean two things: they were out of ammo and/or retreating, or they were trying to avoid friendly fire.

Sure enough, you see movement in the jungle beyond the fence. Nothing confirmed, but you see the leaves and branches rustling and swaying as you see multiple shapes dashing back and forth.

You fight the urge to pull the trigger as your training kicks in. When holding a line, don't fire until you're sure you have eyes on the target. Sure enough, you see figures begin poking out of the jungle as they make a mad dash to the fence. Some sporadic gunfire meets them as the base guards see them approach, but a pair of gunners begin laying down MG fire onto the defensive positions to suppress them.

You also see two engineers lugging breaching charges sprinting for the fence, no doubt to blow it up. Right behind them is at least two dozen assorted infantry.

I'd like to take out the engineers, but MGs are not for taking about priority targets. Wipe out their infantry in a single spray!

Your MG fire wreaks a terrible vengeance on the approaching infantry and you see at least six or so men fall before the rest dive face first into the ground to try and avoid the same fate. The engineers, unaware at their fellows behind them have fallen behind, toss their breaching charges at the fence and dive for cover as well. The dual explosions rips holes in the chain link fence, but with the infantry pinned, there's nobody to take advantage of the breach, at least for now.

You glance to your side and see that the rest of your squad, with the exception of Simo and Morgan, have regrouped and and are gearing up, with Trombe placing itself between them and the enemies as a makeshift barrier. At this point, Trombe begins unleashing its 25mm autocannon on the attacking infantry, wreaking a terrible toll among their formation.

>Runaround's got this. Get up and link with the rest of the squad.
>>
>>27256926
With Runaround providing ample fire support from the Trombe, you take the opportunity to roll into cover and make you way to where the rest of the squad has regrouped.

"Here, you'll need this." Lucina says as she tosses you your chest armor. You quickly sling it on, but ignore putting on the other accessory pieces like your knee and elbow pads. You don't have time for every little thing.

"Okay, so how do we play this?" Charlotte asks as she locks and loads her AR.

>Play defensive. Keep the enemy back until reinforcements arrive.

We're in a reinforced position, underequipped and possibly outnumbered. Not a good time to play aggressive, really.

We're dug in, have a convenient choke point, and our path of attack is straight into the goddamned jungle.

I'm fine here thanks.
>>
>>27257209

Once we're about to do a mission into the jungle, we need to change the barrel. Maybe go to an assault configuration for the M60 (shortened barrel)
>>
>>27257198
Riiiight, Morgan followed him.
>>
>>27257226

Fair enough.

I also suggest increasing our stopping power to decrease the value of cover in the jungle. Lots of trees to hide in, though losing some of the weight would be handy as well.

>>
>>27257242

I think shortening the barrel counts as losing weight. It will affect accuracy but at the ranges we're probably engaging, it shouldn't affect that much and it will improve our mobility and on the move accuracy.
>>
>>27257148
"We're going to maintain defensive position here. Unload everything you've got into them, while Edwin and Sparky stay behind Trombe and keep lobbing mortar lances into the jungle. Accuracy doesn't matter as long as you can scare them from advancing!" You yell.

"Roger!" The Wraiths affirm as they assume battle positions. Both you and Bragg set up on opposite ends of Trombe and begin laying down a withering hail of fire, combined with the sporadic bursts from everybody else's assault rifles.

Whoever these guys were, they clearly weren't expecting such a fierce and organized resistance. Your combined weight of fire prevents them from being able to push any farther in, and before you know, you can hear the rumble of trucks as the base guards are finally mobilized and sent to your position. At the lead is a truck being driven by Menedez himself. It screeches to a halt and Simo and Morgan hop out to rejoin you.

"Fine mess we've jumped into, huh?" Simo says as he picks up his sniper rifle. "What did we miss?"

"Oh, nothing much, just nearly getting mortared and then getting swarmed by jungle people." Charlotte says sarcastically.

"Well, good news is the Vitoze defense force is finally getting off their asses." Simo points to the other trucks now disgorging Salvacion troops, who were firing wildly at the now retreating attackers.

"That's strange." Menendez frowns as he watches the aggressors melt back into the jungles. "I've never seen them so brazen before. Usually the jungle fighters keep their activities close to the border, where the government's control is weak."

At that moment, a flight of Condors swoops overhead and starts pumping 20mm shells and dropping bombs into the jungle as the attackers retreat. It looks like the flyboys finally decided to get in on the action.

"I suppose that means it's not good." Simo says.

(cont)
>>
>>27257539
"The guerrillas always kept their distance from Vitoze because they were afraid. If they were confident enough to stage an attack on the base itself... either they've grown stupider over the years or something has given them reason to genuinely believe they can stand up toe to toe against the military."

"So what are going to do?" You ask.

"Us? We rest." Menendez finally grins. "Even if they are brave enough to attack Vitoze directly, they would have to be particularly brave or foolish to try and attack again when the base is on full alert. We'll get to the bottom of this tomorrow."

You look at each other nervously, not quite convinced.

"Well, you heard the man. Get your stuff packed and to the barracks ASAP." Simo claps to get your attention.

With that, all of you pick up your gear and move off to the barracks, which is thankfully closer to the interior of the base. Suffice to say, many of you didn't get that much sleep that night.

>And that's it for tonight! Next thread will be on Friday evening, 7-8pm PST.

Without television, it wouldn't be a big deal.
The Tet Offensive failed to achieve any military goal, and utterly devastated their ability to actually wage war. HOWEVER, it succeeded in further demoralizing the American public, thanks to the wonders of television letting everyone see US soldiers getting killed with minimal context for the footage, which is where it's actual historical significance comes from.
