You had been in many scary situations, including a close-quarters battle against Sidarxi commandoes in the subterranean ruins of the Stalingrad metro. Many times, you could have died. This woman scares you with her gaze. It's not the same scary as a nightmare. She looks at you with the same regard you would have for some slab of meat, as something to be used.

“A pleasure to meet you,” you say in halting Sidarxi though you'd rather tell her to get her ass off of your planet in German.

She smiles in a pleasantly sickening fashion and clasps your hand between hers; it's a cold and firm grip, the same sort of grip you would use to choke a man to death. You would know.

“It's nice to meet you, Mr. Heller,” she says.

“Would English be better?” she asks in the language.

“It would,” you grudgingly admit.

“I'm happy you could make it. I hope that it was a pleasant enough stay. I'm afraid that we don't know each other very well. Before we begin, is there anything you would like to discuss?”

“Could you describe to me the appeal of your literature? It's come highly recommended, but I'm afraid that I'm not well-versed in it.”

She smiles and replies, “The appeal is the bringing the sound devices of poetry to the readability of prose. The closest genre would be your epics and legends, but that tradition is still very-much alive among us. It does lose a lot in translation, so you might be better off avoiding it until you are more fluent.”

She's talking to you like a child, but a child is probably an overestimation of her opinion of you.

“What's the big picture for this whole business? I'm aware of some details on a vague sense, but what is the 'operational' plan?”

“That's an interesting question. Your race walks a narrow tightrope. This revolt must succeed but not too much. My daughter's unit, of which you are the tactical commander, is supposed to ensure that this is the case. The first problem is that of air superiority as tactics and terrain can already mitigate some of the benefits of orbital surveillance and weapons. At some parts, you will have to ensure that your fellows in the rebellion don't cause significant danger to the Sidarxi, as that can trigger your extermination.”

She calmly asks, “What can you tell me about the human impression of Sidarxi tactics? I'm especially interested in the human side of the Metro battle.”

“My impression was that your soldiers were almost rash in close combat. They were confident and I will admit that they were rightfully confident. However, they were bound by the same constraints of physics. They relied an awful lot on their shields, but that sometimes led to them eating dirt when some lucky guy waited in just the right place at just the right moment to hose down a soldier.”

“That's luck, but your armored infantry seemed disproportionately effective.”

“We hated close combat. If there was enough space to simply lock down an area with fire and remove positions with ranged explosives, we would take it. The only thing I can think of are how the armor doesn't telegraph its motions as much as it might seem. That may have thrown them off.”
“Anything else?”

The only other thing is that you probably underestimated the combination of adrenaline, desperation, and amphetamines that we were operating under. For you, it might have been the same as crushing an ant-hill, but it was a fight for survival for us.”

“Thank you very much, Mr. Heller. I have other business, but it's not often that I am able to meet someone like you.”

She leaves, and Captain Yezrani comes close and says, “You seem to have genuinely interested her. You should be proud of yourself.”

You nod, but instead of further instruction, she leaves you to your own devices.

You really don't want to deal with any alien shit anymore, and decide that perhaps they'll take a hint of you just drink in the corner. You walk up to the bar and ask the bartender in the best Sidarxi you can manage if he there's anything safe for human consumption.

You receive a glass of whiskey for your trouble. Things could be far worse, given the communication. It goes down unlike any other you've tasted, almost like an alcoholic (you hope it's alcohol) oil sliding down your throat.

“Hello, grumpy human.”

You turn around and see another Sidarxi woman who bears some resemblance to the captain approach you with a glass in hand.

“Hello, yourself,” you say.

“What's your name?”

“Fritz Heller,” you reply and take another sip.

“You're the first human I've actually met. I'm Vetrini, Yezrani's sister,” she says.

“Oh,” you say, going through the motions, “That's interesting.”

“I'm a xenobiologist. It's nice to talk with you, all the other humans I've me, I've either vivisected or dissected.”

You almost spit out your drink since it seems to hard to imagine someone so bubbly cutting open someone alive.

“That's, erm, cute.”

“I know, right. It's really interesting how similar but different we are. The muscles are similar, as are the nervous system. However, the skeletal differences and the organs are really interesting. I'd never seen something with a four-chambered heart before. Your livers were really something, surprisingly robust.”

She looks disappointed, “With all your stories of saints, I was expecting there to be some more evidence for parapsychic manifestation in humans. Have fun, I'll see if I can get you away from my sister long enough to run some tests. They shouldn't hurt much.”

You almost shudder and wave your farewell. You sink into the background for the rest of the event and manage not to poison yourself, or so sou think.

“So, do you know about parapsychic phenomena?” you ask, mustering up your best Sidarxi.

And then you punch him right in the face.

You see his face almost turn concave. It was the most perfect punch you had ever made. Shatralo wasn't idle and he punched back at the same time you sought to sucker punch the arrogant bastard. His blow nails you in the arm, but you shrug it off.

He staggers back and you press in on him again, nailing him with a brutal knee to the gut. His forehead smashes into your face, and you see stars. He tries to smash your face with a hammer strike, but you manage to slip away. You snap a kick at his leg which he dodges and rushes forward. You eat a punch in the gut, but it doesn't stop you from grabbing him in a clinch, smashing your skull into his nose, and riddling him with knee after knee in the gut.

You spit blood and your body burns all over, but you aren't the one doubled up on the ground.

Yezrina looks at you and asks, “Why did you do that?” She looks almost disappointed and perhaps a little impressed.

It's primary purpose is to withstand their small arms. What hit the Russian in the flashback-nightmare was a support weapon analogous to an anti-aircraft gun. It also allows them to handle things like MG FFs (AIK-41) like a normal soldier would handle an LMG or an LMG like a rifle.

“Not a good idea.”

“I figured as much based on his colleagues.”

Of course, she just had to know that little bit as well.

“My problem is that there time does not allow me to vet everybody. These people were your associates and came up. Now, I am going to give you a mission: you have seventy-two hours to find five more people for our first little mission. Armored Infantry Field Manual, War Department, 8 June 1941

Chapter 1: General

Section 1: The Role of Armored Infantry

Power armored infantry is a combat arm. It contributes especially to the offensive actions of the force in lieu of unarmored infantry because it has the necessary survivability, profile, and firepower to conduct assaults. It is the breakthrough element of an attack, to be supported by artillery, armored fighting vehicles, and unarmored infantry (hereafter referred to as “infantry”).

Section 2: Characteristic of Armored Infantry

a. General: Armored infantry are distinguished from infantry by their employment of powered armor. Powered armor allows armored infantry to both bring massive firepower directly into the fast-moving infantry firefight and survive hits from “lances” that would otherwise kill infantry.

b. Modes of Transportation:
Foot: Armored infantry can sustain approximately 24 hours of independent operations before running out of fuel. Operations on batteries alone are relatively quiet but can only be sustained for an hour before they require charging.
Motorized: Armored infantry can be motorized similarly to infantry, but are heavier. The average combat weight of an armored infantryman is 600 lbs.
Parachute: Armored infantry can be dropped from aircraft with specially modified doors and harnesses. One armored infantryman is approximately the same load as four infantrymen.
Rocket Packs: Tactical mobility can be increased by the means of disposable rockets attached to the back of the infantryman.

c. Capabilities of Weapons: Armored infantry can bring much greater firepower to bear than normal infantry. Support weapons like medium machine guns can be treated as rifles to them. Heavy machine guns and light cannons encumber them as the machine gun would to any other infantryman.
>>
>>27252716
This is my faux field manual about power armor. It's not quite directly relevant, but I think it's something fun to dump
>>
>>27252795
Personally, I think 'Powered Infantry' would be better. Since infantry *do* wear armor. Or PAI. Maybe Heavy Infantry since those didn't exist for the past 2-300 years.
>>
>>27252862
I did actually think about it. I decided on armored because personal armor barely existed in this period.
>>
>>27253019
Armor is a thing though. Flak jackets existed, as did steel helmets. Even some basic bulletproof vests existed at the time. Some infantry even wore hard armor.
>>
>>27253114
I'm not saying that they didn't, but helmets aside, many of those developments were during WW2. In this case, the invasion was in the mid-30s and personal armor took a distinctly different route that historically.

Also, this is a faux-US manual using faux-US terminology. Let's say that the British used somewhat different terminology for their power armored infantry units.

IIRC, the PA were using shit like HMGs. Does that mean you need a weapon of that caliber to take out their infantry? Or is it just to take out anything in the way, including things like light vehicles?

>>Motorized: Armored infantry can be motorized similarly to infantry, but are heavier. The average combat weight of an armored infantryman is 600 lbs.

I assume specialized vehicles were made for this purpose?

>>Heavy machine guns and light cannons encumber them as the machine gun would to any other infantryman.

That would imply they'd need to rely on shorter bursts or else brace their weapon, wouldn't it?

The biggest problem with facing Sidarxi infantry are their "shields" (which are the standard sci-fi omnidirectional energy shields). These operate by means of amplifying their parapsychic abilities which would be too weak on their own. Punching through shields requires several full-power rifle rounds which then have to deal with their existing body armor. A medium (rifle-cailber) machine gun provided a balance between "time to kill" and portability.

>Motorized
In some cases, in others existing vehicles were reinforced.

>That would imply they'd need to rely on shorter bursts or else brace their weapon, wouldn't it?

Correct. These are the light machine gun equivalents.

Given that's WW2 rifles...

It means there's automatic rifles chambered in the same caliber, or more likely?

Rifles chambered to fire big enough shots that they only need 1 or 2 shots on the vitals.

As the Americans discovered (which will come up later in the field manual):

a. The shields are more vulnerable to single hits.

b. .50 BMG AP is conveniently powerful enough to punch through the shield and retain enough energy to usually penetrate the body armor in a single shot. That is why the rebel power armor rifles were chambered in it.

Either their rifles have advanced in recoil absorption (not too unbelievable when you have PA and 7 years of warfare), or they carry heavy as fuck rifles around. Or, they rely alot more on static defense.
>>

Its the PA that lug the big, heavy guns around.

Infantry are still using full power rounds, but semi-automatic rifles like the G3 were adopted earlier. Unarmored infantry relied extensively on explosives from rifle grenades to automatic grenade launchers to mortars to rocket launchers.

>semi-automatic rifles like the G3

G3 is select-fire. Why would they use an intermediate round though if even full-power rounds aren't reliable enough?

Are they the settings equivalent of a carbine, or SMG?
>>
>>27253733
Or do the battle rifles in the setting use full-power rounds?
>>

I goofed in terminology. I meant battle-rifle, specifically of the magazine-fed kind with a standard capacity of ~20 rounds.

These are the weapons of regular infantry. Power armor never supplanted them because of the expense and time to make a suit as well as their logistical footprint. Armored infantry were reserved for leading infantry attacks. However, the majority of soldiers were not so well equipped.

what about tank development? Did armored inf more or less replace them?
>>

>>27253795
Do they use smaller rounds like IRL? Same one for simplicity's sake? Either way, some battle rifles that would probably exist and be in use?

FN49
StG45(M)
CETME Model A/B (Proto-G3 developed off the STG45(M).
T44/BM59 - Select-fire M1 Garand with a detachable magazine.
MAS-49
Rieder Automatic Rifle - one of the conversions of the Lee-Enfield to make it automatic.
SKS
A proto-AK.

I could also imagine there being conversions for bolt-guns to use detachable magazines.

Using weapons that actually existed even on the drawing board can give things a really nice feel.

I cant find the pic but there's a "future soldier" program that existed in the 50s/60s for the U.S Military. It had wonderful innovations like a helmet radio.

Good night and thanks for a good thread.
