You are the Queen, the core of your nest's hivemind. Though your thoughts command the multitudes of your insect offspring, your numbers have grown too great for the nest and a new queen has left the nest with a part of your swarm. The queen was ready to found her own hive, but when she began to pull control of herself and her brood away from you - as you pulled away from your old queen, as all queens must - your mind resisted and firmly reasserted control. The young queen's mind bent to yours and through her you again commanded the whole of your offspring, now in two seperate nests. Your mind expanded, the underqueen becoming an extension of your consciousness. Awareness flooded your mind, YOUR mind, distinct! You have evolved past any of your species, able to form true cognitive thought. But what to do with it? Your insect host shudders and prepares to recieve your commands...

Welcome to Hivemind Quest! Before we begin, there are a few orders of business - please vote on:

1) Your/the Queen's name.
2) Your first Underqueen's name.
3) Most importantly, your species - pick a queen-based insect, such as ants, bees, even termites.

First answers to 3+ votes will be a go! Mechanics post follows.

While most of your actions will be determined by quester's responses and the outcome of your decisions, you will also have some Stats to work with and luck will play a role. You will roll against your stat with a d100, aiming under it (ie. Dark Heresy, a 1 is the best roll and 100 the worst). In order to avoid confusion about what roll is going to be used, the FIRST roll that accompanies a post on the course of action questers choose will be the relevant roll. If the questers put together several posts' ideas, the first roll on a post that summarizes/combines the ideas will be used. This will (hopefully) avoid accusations of me picking a certain roll, but we all know how that usually goes.

The stats will be Speed, Toughness, Combat Efficiency, Metabolic Efficiency, and Adaptability. Your initial scores will be given to you once you select a starting species. You will also have various Attributes, like your Diet (ie. wood, nectar, etc.) or Movement (Flying, Burrow, etc.) - it is possible to have multiple items from a category, especially if we get into the last item. Evolutions are a longer term thing, if this quest goes long enough. With time the Queen will be able to drive her swarm into adapting in certain ways - perhaps you will gain the ability to detect minute vibrations in the ground around your, or sense the presence of magic. Oh yeah - there will be magic, though obviously as insects it won't come up much. Unless you make it.

You are Okgvoromgvkvgkrmt (also known as Ctrl-V), the Queen of your brood of Termites. Your Underqueen Ms. Popo tentatively inquires what your wishes are.

Stat Breakdown:
Speed: 20
Toughness: 25
Combat Efficiency: 30
Metabolic Efficiency: 30
Adaptability: 25 + 5 for Cognitive Thought

Attributes
Diet - Wood, Limited Veg.
Movement - Ground (slow), Wood-Burrowing
Soldier Caste - only the dedicated soldier caste is readily able to fight, workers are rather weak
Cognitive Thought - your hivemind can expand via Underqueens and you can respond and adapt accordingly

Information Dump: Your nest is in a temperate region, with a short, harsh winter and long mild summer. The areas not civilized by humanoid races are heavily forested - your primary nest is located in a large tree stump on the edge of these woods. The clearing nearby is tended by large upright creatures and they work with other creatures (humans and livestock).

Also, magic is a thing, and may even be responsible for your consciousness, but as yet you have no knowledge of it. Also, you can't try to learn about something you don't yet know exists, so no Termite Fireball requests. Yet.
>>
>>27229029
>Your Underqueen Ms. Popo tentatively inquires what your wishes are.
We're termites, right? So find some wood to nom on.

Preferably in a nursing home. Preferably the main structural support beams.
>>
A stump!? For OUR glorious swarm!? NO.

Gentlemen. We're mauling a tree. The tallest tree in the woods. And if it falls down on accident, we'll know if it makes noise.
>>
>>27229029
we inform ms.Popo that we would like her to establish a hive within travel distance, so search for areas/tell her a good location from our previous knowledge of the area.
>>
We must nom the Yggdrasil.
>>
While nursing homes are likely out of the question, there are long-running wood structures surrounding the clearings the humans tend to, and several massive (to you) structures further inside the clearing. Your tree stump nest is about 15 feet away from this "fence" but Ms. Popo's brood has yet to entrench themselves.

The humans have three fields: one for a few cattle (near), one for grain (closest), one for a grove of cherry trees (farthest from you). There are a handful of barns around the fields and maybe a dozen structures in the little town.

You feel like the maximum range for controlling Ms. Popo would be about 100 ft, with anything further making it possible for her to resist your command.
>>
We need to find the biggest tree and make a nest out of it. To let all the other trees know we are not to be trifled with.
>>

>>
>>27229521
>>27229404
There is a tree of exceptional size about 45 feet north along the fenceline - the clearing on one side allowed it to get massive, a sturdy oak going up 90 ft and 8 ft across at its base. It is easily the biggest tree within range.
>>
>>27229637

>>
>>27229667
Your soldiers have fought off ants occasionally and seen a few bees overhead, but nothing serious. The worst scare you've had was a young human chopping for firewood near a log you were munching.

>>27229682
Ms. Popo's part of the swarm begins to burrow into the base of the tree, hollowing out a nest area for the Underqueen. Soon the feast begins - from experience you know that such a large tree will take weeks to die from even a heavy infestation, and will continue to feed you for months after it falls - assuming no one chops it up for firewood.
>>
>>27229680
The oak is the closest you can get, for now.
>>
>>27229800
>>27228304
Well, for now we focus on additional growth, and try to spawn another sub-queen to see if it will be affected the same way as Ms.Popo and to further our growth.
>>
>>27229861
Agreed. We require additional underqueens to expand as much as possible. With luck and numbers we can enslave the bees, raise them as mounts, and ride them into battle against the dreaded firewood choppers.
>>
>>27229861
>>27229907

Weeks pass and the new nest swells in size, eating into the core of the mighty oak. The members of the two nests mix, becoming one swarm connected by your mind. After some time, you can tell that your focus on raw numbers and expansion has paid off - you have enough members that a third nest could be established, provided you can birth and control a second Underqueen...

(please vote for for 2nd Underqueen name)

Your Metabolic Efficiency has increased to 32 and your Combat Efficiency has fallen to 29.

We shall wear the exoskeletons of the bee workers we crush to fool the returning bees from a distance and ambush them one at a time as they return. From there, we use the larva and the queen we captured to reproduce and domesticate the bees. Training the strongest and healthiest for our cavalry, and the others shall produce honey to bolster our food supply.

With a version of Ms. Coco that you finally find agreeable, you note that Ms. Popo's oak is showing signs of going horizontal soon. As one facet of your mind directs Ms. Coco and part of your swarm to establish a nest further to the north (and thus closer to the unsuspecting bumblebees) another notes that a large section of the oak has fallen away from the woods and into the grain field of the humans, smashing a good section of fencing. A few of your workers sample the fence boards and find them quiet agreeable - human structures are quite edible!

>>
>>27230721
You are doubtful that second generation Underqueens would be so docile, better to make them yourself for now.

The next day, the humans begin to chop up and haul away the fallen part of the oak tree. Some of your workers and soldiers are still inside and are found by the humans. They don't seem to make a big deal of it, but kill quite a few of them as they knock most of the pests off the newly fallen lumber. While Ms. Coco focuses on trying to trap a bumblebee for you, Ms. Popo is angered by the loss of her minions. She has the soldiers in the fallen log attack the would-be lumberjacks, resulting in some swearing. She senses your displeasure at her unapproved attack and makes the rest of her termites retreat from the fallen log. The next few weeks you spend expanding your nests and your range of control, with Ms. Jojo and Ms. Toto expanding into forest to chew at the sheer mass of trees, ripe for the eating.

>>27230853
Patience and focus will expand your mind - you can only breed with termites, anyway.

Finally, Ms. Coco is successful - her soldiers drag to your nest a bumblebee, wounded but alive! Its wings and two legs have been chewed off and the stinger is long gone, but it lives!

Bees tell each other apart largely by scent - bees from a different nest have a different smell and are attacked if too close. Smashing good roll! They keep track of each other and the nest via those same pheromones: the closest approximation is an extremely rudimentary telepathy that serves as rangefinder/compass back to the hive, or (for Queens) to the individuals of your swarm. This applies to all swarm species.

As you pull this information from your captive and form the conclusions in your mind, the bee expires. You are now armed for the future, however - perhaps controlling these great flying honeysuckers won't be so hard after all...
