So it's generally agreed that Sail Power and Solar Power are the main sources for ships, with generators powered by alcohol and similar substances are emergency fall backs right?

Kelp primarily. They sell Kelp wine (google it) so with a little freshwater it's probably a good base for many different kinds of liqour.

Also most plants will ferment and produce methane and alcohol, both substances that can be bottled and used for fuel with the proper equipment.

CATastrophe.

Because of perverted scientists, there are also dog people and bunny people.

Postapocalyptic mutation brought on by alien comets.

Solar Panels and or Wind Turbines, the power presumably supplied off site via an underwater cable.

Presumably the same way the cooking equipment is powered.

Presumably someone who charges a fee for trash collection.

Oh cool, CATastrophe thread.
>>27207138
Yeah, a lot of things are unbalanced. It is an Alpha (more like proof of concept) rule set, which is plain to see by how godawful it is. The beta document wont be as nearly rushed, will have a great deal of formatting (hyperlinks and an actual table of contents, ho!) and a number of balance issues addressed. Oh, and artwork. Can't forget that.
>>27207278
>but his Electrolotl's irk me and his lack of mounts and pack animals also dissapoints me.
Ah, as a one-man-band (Two now), it's a bit hard to get everything that I'd want in. I am disappointed in the number of animals as well looking back on it. I poled /tg/ asking what they thought she be added in a thread a while back when I got to the meat of the bestiary, and many things were made off of simple descriptions. I made a community critter repository google drive doc for people to link animals, robots and the like they would like to see, but so far no luck. Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wyhWpbJlPnwHzXaCbIW2cMJ7gzkb4mFvaEY1fQTw_tI/edit
I have actual riding and animal husbandry rules in the beta document, and if you'd like I can post a description of it
>>27208935
It was babbys first RPG, what can I say. I have been attempting to lessen the crunch, but so far changes remain untested outside of dev tests. If you would be willing, please by all means tell me what you think is crunchy and could be made less so. The canon locations will be added, as well as a slew of other DM tools like a percentile roll settlement generator and such.

Oh, can't forget this: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oJsFIff1oUYKzvbuRzw5vvqhG_bSsLQnq3XMCANrfvw/edit

A list of things being currently worked on/things that will be worked on: Complete rework of diving. It'll be replaced with an entirely different rule set, in hopes that it's not such a clusterfuck. Gear will be completely reworked; more so the tabling and layout, the vehicle's section and weapon section especially. Vehicle customization, ship combat are both in the works, and I hope that it'll be enjoyable for even those who are not specialized for combat. Settlement generation is nearly done. Once I get to it, combat will be thoroughly licked clean to make it easier to deal with. Character creation got a bit of an overhaul due to balance reasons, but I'm still trying to find a way to lessen the crunch for secondary characteristics. The skill system got a few changes, namely skill points now act as luck/fate/edge points and can be spent but not burnt; I'll explain further if anyone likes.

The beta will be overall revamped, with many of the sections completely rewritten or reorganized, the alpha sections/chapter set up as you all know it is going to be metaphorically butchered and reassembled in due time. Hopefully if I can ever get someone willing to, short stories before sections will be a thing.

Well... I just now learned of this. Is it wrong that I already love it? As much as I enjoy grimdark settings, these pictures and the concept itself is just leaving me fucking giddy. Grimdark and whimsical settings just fulfill two different parts of me i suppose
>>
>>27216178
CATastrophe was made to be a BREAK from Grimdark settings. It's a game about Diving for treasure, hanging out with your friends, throwing parties in your favorite blue apocalypse settings, and maybe getting a little romance with your favored Kemonomimi girl.

You like it because it hits all the buttons that 40K doesn't, it's a balanced part of every fa/tg/uy's PnP alotment.
>>
>>27216236
Well. That certainly makes sense to me. Ill definitely have to think about joining in one of the games on mythweavers. How long has this been in development and any idea of how long till it will be in beta?
>>
>>27216300
it's been in development for years now and tere are 2 systems in question. Kav's system, which has an Alpha and TAIL which doesn't.

you can always turn to FATE or savage words if you prefer less glitchy systems since those are fairly universal.

make sure to hit the 1d4chan articles and checkout the sup/tg/ threads for lore not present in Kav's alpha or the 1d4chan article.
>>

Seems to me it can be modified to allow some things that may be slightly darker in tone. I've liked the suggestions in previous posts that the tone of the setting be left somewhat to the DM's discretion -- you can go light and happy like Aria, or get a little more intense for dem Miyazaki feels.

Ideally, of course, you shouldn't WANT to go full grimdark with this setting, because (as previously stated) that's what it's intended to avoid.

Its more of combating the environment and having a grand old time over saving the world. Some actual enemy ideas have been pitched before, like pirates who would rather steal than dive, Oldguards who still carry out their old programming despite how different the world is, and degraded insane AIs. If anyone has already played in a game, I'd love to hear stories of misadventures on the endless blue. I'm aware of a few games, running and I've received feedback from them (notably a few mythweavers champagnes) on some rules, etc they found grating, but nothing in the ways of logs.

On a side note, I love all the art that people have drawn in regards to CATastrophe! They're really good.

Original thread guys wanted 10:1 female to male ratio.

We knocked it down to 3:1 and 5:1 in male deprived areas with a few areas have gender levels at a rough equal.

In general you'll see more chicks than guys.

You can however play a male character and we have a group of macho monster hunter guys who tend to be x-box hueg and sail around in battleships performing feats of derring do.

Also, a Trap Character would be appropiate since some males might try and emulate female heroes by looking all girly.

Yes, there in fact is! Skill points have been changed to have rerolling/large bonus applications. Having one now grants a flat +1 to rolls with the skill, until all points have been spent, which then incurs a -2 until it is regenerated. Defaulting has been raised in penalty for balance reasons. You can get a max 2 skill points for a flat +2 to the skill as well as the further ability to spend 2 at once for instant success on certain checks. And yes, there is a gender ratio table in the settlement generation that's nearing completion.

>>27233999
TL;DR: The system is a d20 roll under, with your target numbers equating out from a primary attribute plus half (rounded up) attribute, with modifiers added/subtracted. There are 5 attributes, Power, Agility Willpower, Savviness and Luck. Luck doesn't necessarily have many skill roll associations, as it acts as an "HP" stat for PCs. Instead of taking damage you "Luck" out of actually being hit with the full force of the blow. Once you run out however, you take injuries to specific attributes, which incur negative modifiers to all rolls associated with that modifier. Once you reach an amount of injuries based off of a figure derived from your willpower, you pass out.

So, one Kemomi might have a "purrloined" sealed inflatable life vest she salvaged off of a plane, another might have a almost brand new emergency surfacing device built into her suit, and another might just have a new steel drum and a whole lot of bravery.

I'd wager this would be based on the tech levels of communities too, and how they interact with one-another.

The currency that is generally accepted is a Fang, an almost translucent bright blue canine tooth-shaped shiny that is found all over the place in the water. It is a by product of the alien mosses from the initial comet impact's digestion of pollutants and salts, or so I've fluffed it. Of course, as >>27235841 says, not all settlements use it. Whatever is in demand could easily be the currency of the day, (Food, Electricity, 'Nip) or simple barter systems.

Nice... there is more meat to the track now.

"Now there is a little place I know. 20 clicks from Diver's Bay and about 50 feet down. The water is so clear that if you sit down there, with only the sound of your respirator with you... you'll feel like you're in a whole 'nother place.

The fish are beautiful there with odd gold and red and blue and green stripes on them, their scales playing tricks of light in the water...

The biggest thing though, is the glass dome you'd be sitting on. I've not figured out a way to get at what is under it, but I have seen playing through the bits of the roof exposed to the light above and said light shining on what's below... but there are shinies in there... but they look very sensitive to salt water.

CATastrophe has fetishes built right into it. These fetishes however are pretty fucking mild all told and nothing to be afraid of. Just look at those covers Frank Frazzeta did. He had barbarian chicks and mild BDSM themes we have Kemonomimi, Tans, and Bikinis.

If a Player wants to come from a household where his parents disapprove of males hunting for treasure instead of tending the shop that's a valid character background, so is coping with female nagging and mothering by dressing up like a girl, as long as no one in your group is skeeved out by it who cares?

There's room for many different kinds of CATastrophe.

Well in alot of places, Fangs are crystals, perhaps these crystals are part of a 3D Printing process in high-tech settlements, or perhaps some sort of reaction in other settlements that is important enough to be measured as currency.

Personally I dislike Fangs. Feels too convienant to me. I think each settlement should have their own form of currency and preffered trade goods like a certain kind of fish, electricity, or "Funweed" (The Aforementioned Hemp/Catnip Hybrid)

Some settlements might use bottlecaps or wooden tokens as money, others might rate Rivets, washers, nuts, and bolts at a certain value.

But hey, that's just me. If you like fangs keep 'em.
>>
>>27238125
> Funweed
Maybe dried and cut with varying amounts of dried kelp, then formed into coin shapes?
>>
>>27238125
To be honest, if I ran a Fanged economy, it would be for the region the adventures takes place in. To allow several different settlements to trade among each other.

Of course my setting has mostly green-tech diesel-tech, or in the case of the central settlement, earless-tech.
>>
>>27238145
Oh, and my setting being the setting I would be running for my players.
>>
>>27238139
Possibly, or little bags of it weighted and measured. Presumably you could also trade for Funcloth and Funrope.

>>27238149
>>27238145
I'd probably use bottle caps or the aforementioned nuts and bolts if it came down to a regional economy.

Also I'd mostly stick to Solar and Wind power but occasionally give villians stuff like boilers that burn wood to give them that "no fucks given" villianous style.
>>
>>27238215
Alcohol-fuelled engines were discussed last thread, as well.
Maybe steam engines run off alcohol/dried kelp?

Also, WHAT wood? Gigantic mushrooms?
>>
>>27238226
There are palm trees that crawl around on their root systems. They form enormous rafts by twining their root systems together and sometimes hang around on islands. Antartica is a temperate forest zone now and presumably any landmasses left (we need some to break up waves so you don't get tidal waves that run around the world forever after they pick up enough momentum) and they could have forests.

Also you could run an engine on methane produced by fermenting plants (it's a common byproduct produced when making alcohol) or hydrogen made via elctrolysis. I figure engines that run on stuff like that would be for emergencies or relatively primitive communities.

What if you used a submersible or a large ship with lots of submersibles? Could you moor your ship in an area where the winds don't pose a threat?

Alternatively could you use a solar powered blimp to get there and push past the winds on the final leg of the journey?

Also there's plenty of landmass in antartica. It's just that it's being eroded by high winds, maybe a terraforming device has made the area volcanic and lost landmass is replaced by lava every 50 years or so?

I feel that they'd be the real drivers of inter-settlement trade, as well. If not actual settlements unto themselves, due to the sheer amount of ocean they have to sail on.

Plus, with the setting, there'd be epic boarding actions as well. Sailing up alongside another ship, throwing grapples across to pull them closer, dropping the boarding planks, and storming aboard to party and trade shinies.

Fuck, now I REALLY want to do this.

I'm curious about this setting.
Are there any humans left at all? Or have they all died out? Any long lost conclaves struggling to survive? Research outposts observing the strange new world? Cities beneath the waves?

Humanity want's it's world back
>>
>>27240558
It's left to the individual GM.

One may have them watching a world run by Kemomi, another might have humanity actually extinct, there even is a way to have it where there are straggling humans.

Depends on what the GM wants.
>>
>>27240558
>Humanity want's it's world back
HFY pls.
>>
>>27240558
In order: No, yes, no, yes (but they're staffed by catgirls), yes (but they're sunken uninhabited ruins filled with treasure and not much else).
This is not a setting for HFY.
>>
>>27240628
Doesn't the fluff say something to the extent that non-hybrid humans can't breathe the atmosphere anymore? If there are any full humans left they'd be underwater somewhere.

>tfw the last human colony on earth turns out to be Rapture
>>
>>27240558
HFY plz go.
>>
Before this HFY ball starts rolling...

1: Nothing has been written/said about humans other than they aren't on Earth anymore, and aren't interested in returning.

2: If Humans couldn't breathe the atmosphere, neither could the Kemomi as they are mostly human.

3: Again, the whole question of "Earless; Extinct or not?" should be left to individual DMs (Dive Masters).
>>
>>27240558
Humanity Fuck No.

They are dead, and those left are either stuck in stasis awaiting revival by kemomis that don't know and don't care, or in space and still consider the almost land-less Earth a dead loss.
>>
>>27240775
> If Humans couldn't breathe the atmosphere, neither could the Kemomi as they are mostly human.
I was kinda wondering about this. I haven't read the PDF or anything, but I would think if you throw that much water onto the earth, the sheer amount of water vapor in the air would make it unbreathable.
>>
>>27240734
Fluff is just an excuse to Kill All Humans so Kemo can take their place. Alien bacteria and what not helped mutate local life and the rest are genengineered lifeforms to make life on Kemos easier.

Humans aren't supposed to be a part of CATastrophe, they're gone, if rapture exists it's empty and run by robots that automatically staf shops and collect resources.

In this setting humans are the ultimate mary su.

It's better to leave them out, otherwise these threads will get nowhere, as they'll be filled with even more HFY Purge The Mutant than they already are.
>>
>>27240833
Thing is the HFY/Purge the Mutant crap is NOT CATastrophe. CATastrophe is a cartoonish Noble Bright adventure game about fun, diving, parties, some surfing, and lots of shiny loot.

That is the core of CATastrophe.
>>
>>27240659
>>27240740
HFY was in jest, I'm much more interested in the idea of stragglers or isolated communities.
>>
>>27240875
The isolation is actually essential. It prevents a dependence of a "metaplot" that every DM has to follow. Now, this also allows things to happen pretty much isolated from each other.

It's a VERY big ocean, no matter what happens, you will be missed at the party.
>>
>>27240859
So why would you want to give anyone any excuse to try to put the HFY crap into the book?
When someone asks about humans (especially in a HFY kinda way), the answer should be "as the point of the setting was to create a world without humans, the world is devoid of humans").

While I personally think humanity being dead/gone forever suits the setting better, I cant exactly tell you that you CANT put some humans in your game and if you really want to, I see no reason why I should try to stop you from it. But the "Humanity want's it's world back" part of your post that really confuses me.

I can just imagine two humans, waking up from cryosleep/coming back from space/etc and observing earth as it has become.
>Hey boss, it turns out that the earth is covered with carefree catgirls, some of who consider us something akin to gods and those that don't would love us forever due to the fact that we know how all this fancy tech of ours actually works
>LOCK AND LOAD, BOYS, LEAVE NO SURVIVORS! REMOVE CATNIP, REMOVE CATNIP!
It just don't make no sense to me.
>>
>>27240930
Actually it's INTENTIONALLY left up in the air for a DM to mess with. There shouldn't and won't be any "Word of God" opinion one way or another about Humans. At least in my head. The focus of the game should be on the Kemomi though, and humans in the setting DO take away from the core concept. But the rules shouldn't be designed to permanently bar something that one DM might want to do.

Eh, that part was meant more in jest than anything else. As I agree it is an irrational response that doesn't make too much sense from what i can see of the setting.
Hence, spoilering it rather than making it in an actual part of the main post.
In hindsight, it was probably a mistake as it seems to have irritated people, but c'est la vie.
>>

Do those things go around touching things at night?

Do they make everything a bother?

Do they solve all the crosswords?
>>
>>27240990
I agree on this opinion. This should be the operating philosophy. As a Noble Bright universe as well, if Humans show up they should be benevolent explorers observing how what they left behind are adapting to their new surroundings.

That is IF a DM has humans in their fame. Otherwise... they no longer exist.
>>
>>27241094
They steal your shinies and drag all electronic things into the depths of the oceans with them since they feed on that shit.

They probably also solve all the crosswords and rearrange your spice rack, since I secretly believe they feed on catgirl tears more than they do on electricity.
>>
>>27222688
Nobody dies.

Not even the Kaiju.

It's like that one Powerpuff girl episode where monsters prove how tough they are by fighting the giant robots.
>>
>>27240991
And it's an attitude like that which will allow the HFYfags to keep coming in. That's what halted this project the first time, remember?
If something defeats the point of the core concept, it should be removed. If saying "humans don't exist in this setting where the point was that humans don't exist" is "Word of god", then saying ANYTHING about the setting is "Word of God". At that point, you might as well just strip out all the setting and make blank mechanics.
>>
>>27240990
How bout humans just fucked off to Mars and don't want anything to do with Earth anymore.
There are a few humans on Earth, but their only objective would be to get to the colony on Mars, making all of their actions (such as stealing tech or resurrecting some ancient machine) seem like something a Lovecraftian god would do.

Now, this doesn't happen too often, but that's where most of the legends of humans come from.

>>27241230
No reason not to assume this really, if a GM wants to have a game where his players are school girls in cryo who wake up to survive in the ruins of a city and do their best to get a dreamy date for the Sun Fruit Harvest Festical at Sky Tree Village he'll do that even if you say "HUMANS ARE DEEEAAAD" right in the sourcebook.

And there's nothing wrong with that, but for the moment we should stick to the 3 Main races and assume that humans are extinct so we don't go off on wierd ass tangents.
>>
>>27241434
I'm with you on everything up to this:

>3 Main races

I am a adherent of 5 races, although I might at least for my FATE thing, make Bears and Rabbits optional along with a few others.
>>
>>27241465
>Bears and Rabbits
I have no problem with Kumamimi but aren't rabbits one of the 3 main? What would you replace them with? Mice, Squirrels?

Why not have the races adhere to the Agile, Smart, Strong trifecta and just let homebrew Kumamimi grab one of the 3 templates and afdd appropiate traits to it?

Like a Nekomimi will always land on her feet, Usagimimi are good at building, Inumimi are good at teamwork etc.

Foxes are Canines like Dogs. If anything Foxes would fall under Inumimi as one of many different sub species. They'd also be fighting with cats for the role of aloof trickster.

Nah, the third race is rabbits who can be communal workers or something.
>>
I think then I will default to 4 "common" races.

Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, and Foxes.

Bears would be a "rare" race as well as Mice and Ferrets.

The city pictures are just weird. Are the oceans filled with chlorine or something? Where's the algae?

The algae was also wiped out in the apocalypse

Just the algae. It was an apocalpyse that flooded everything and killed off all of the algae

> tfw that's actually pretty serious shit, a lot of foodchains have algae at the bottom

By the looks of it it destroyed a majority of the aquatic ecosystem.

Now you understand why it's an apocalypse

what catastrophe could have caused this?

Giant salt asteroid hitting each of the ice caps?
My god. The world is one giant swimming pool.

I bet all those cat girls either have bleached or greenish hair,,,

That might be a cool plot: fix the water purifier by raiding old buildings for humie tech.

>nyadorns council

Well, there we go. Nyadorns Council wants the PCs to find the water chip. Are you a bad enough cat girl to save the vaul- I mean, village?

I assume that level of salination has some negative effects besides being completely undrinkable and killing off marine life?

Wow, that actually makes pretty much everything make sense, good job with that. Salt asteroid is the kind of thing you can assume to exist anyway. Especially for a setting that doesn't need to worry about any sort of authentic representation of space.

Can't see how it wouldn't, but an asteroid made of such material isn't exactly common.

Other problems that so much salt might cause, though, is that salt water promotes rust and all sorts of other chemical degredation. The buildings would fall apart faster, and it'd probably also kill off a lot of the plants.

Although, one method of purifying salt water involves boiling it, leaving behind reformed salt crystals as the water can no longer keep the ions that made up the salt apart.

So if there's a creature that adapted to use salt in it's physiology somehow, that could explain why so many creatures are dead, yet the buildings haven't been completely eradicated.
>>
>>27243062
2/?

Silicon based life forms might be likely to use salt or some other metals and metaloids as nutrients. So the oceans are filled with rock-monsters, but in order to have silicone based life, we need a lot of silicon, and my knowledge of basic chemistry fails me as to how many sources of silicon naturally exist. (Though, we could also have had some silicon in the asteroids that caused the catastophe)

Incidentally, I think CATastrophe would be a good name for this setting.

however various sea sponges as well as microorganisms like diatoms need silicon in order to have structure (Wikipedia: Silicon).
>sea sponges
Must be at least some of it on the sea floor then, right?

Yeah, my brain failed me for a little bit; sand is silicon dioxide, as well as quartz.

So if we assume that silicon-life/rock-monsters come into being to make use of all the salt, there's probably a lot less sand lying around.

Very shiny rock monsters.

So our cat-folk end up fighting shiny rock monsters in sunken buildings and keeping their corpses as trophies, since their high salt content makes them inedible.

So then there's the matter of food. I'm assuming that the water hasn't killed off all the land plants, but omnivorous cat girls are going to need some meat, too.

Why can't there be some sort of fish or birds that have adapted to life in what amounts to a swimming pool? Something has to eat sea sponges. Nature tends to not let silly things like extinction events get by that easily.

Especially if there are green plants, there should be something grazing on said plants.

Preparing the meat might be another story...

Hell, you might even make looking for human age cans of cat food a plot point...

Green plants means insects. Insects can be fed upon by birds, which fowl make up the other half of mundane cat's primary diet. (They were also carnivores, but becoming humanoid could have let them become more omnivorous like us)

>>
>>27243087
Oddly enough, I also imagine the cat-folk liking human age energy drinks. Fish and fowl are primary parts of a cats diet because they are rich in the nutrient taurine; without taurine, cats go blind. In humans, taurine isn't necessary, but is believed to aid in muscle regeneration, which is why it's included in energy drinks.

Energy drinks are probably a luxury item brought back from scavengers.

Yarn might be a nice plus, but I can't think of anything on the same level as catfood and energy drinks.

Well, there's shelter. With that, all the basic needs are filled. Anything else they'd want out of there would be recreational.

I guess vitamin supplements, flea and tick collars? Antibiotics? Drugs that cause them to go into heat?

Ignore the last one.

What exactly do cats need to survive past naps and comfy laps?

Bear in mind that cats are natural predators, our cat-folk likely just exploring the human ruins less out of necessity, and more out of boredom. (Somebody mentioned earlier that they see this as more of a light-hearted scenario, anyways.)

So it's not really "We need these or we'll die!" but "Dude, the ancients had some pretty bitching stuff!"

Old cat toys and other shiny objects are likely targets as well, but given the fussy personalities cats seem to have, somebody may REALLY want one specific kind of thing, and will probably stop at nothing to get it.

Laser pointers

I am imagining some person introducing themselves as a great magician or prophet.

They use a laser pointer to sell their story.

Well I think the most important thing in this setting is going to be drinkable water, since the ground is covered with non-drinkable water. So energy drinks, regular water and other beverages. Of course, to keep it lighthearted, there could be a desalination plant laying around that just needs to be brought back online.

Collecting rain in buckets, trenches, or towers; that could also work.

Or maybe domesticating smaller rock-monsters that drink salt-water and expel fresh water. (That might be a little weird, though.)

Golems that produce fresh water. Why not even have them be reprogrammed with human tech?

Or shattered rock monster parts can be reused. We now have a mechanic/drone class. Why stop there? They could even use salvaged RC cars and planes and such.

Hell, explorers will need spotters when they go underwater. Who else would man the sonar/radar?
How about scientists created a plant/mushroom/whatever that can somehow deal with the salt and its effects, but only for awhile? And the cat girls are routinely growing this on land and then re-planting it around building foundations submerged in water? Or maybe they grow some artificial coral that simply doesn't let any water through, and provide food for it around buildings where they plant it, and when there's enough of it, hey, safe buildings! Or maybe they stop feeding the coral and it dies, leaving a dead but waterproofing coral husk.

Maybe some people with the mechanist 'spark' could cobble together primitive robots or something? There has to be some tech around, especially if half of the world is underwater (SCUBA gear, re-breathers, sonar, etc).
>robot guard dogs watch over energy drink and cat food stashes

The Purnanym is a small traveling caravan of sorts, based out of an old whaling boat. Ruins are dangerous.

Add robots that act like Reaverbots, and you have an adventure.

If you want romance, have the PCs fight over mates on land and party it up before their next dive.

Male PCs could even be things like SONAR techs or field support mechanics. That way, you have someone to make the gear, someone to use it, and someone to bring back MORE SHINY THINGS.

Maybe there could be "chlorine storms" or something where clouds of chlorine gas pass over areas and the inhabitants have gasmasks handy in case of these things.
But to keep the lightheartedness, make it so they tend to happen far out to sea (which would be super-far-out to sea given that the sea is even bigger now), so cases of the "storms" hitting populated areas is incredibly rare.
Could have entire plot hooks about having to take a boat out to a chlorine-heavy area to dive for some lost ship.

Well, no: that would be fatal to suspension of disbelief. But you can reasonably either a) sidebar it, noting that kemomimi and other surviving organisms are adapted (possibly artificially) to the current water-vapor levels and therefore it shouldn't make a difference for most games, or b) just fail to mention it completely.

I appreciate that you want to leave things up to individual groups, but if you leave _too much_ up to individual groups, you aren't actually writing a setting. (And frankly, if a DM is determined to have humans, they'll have humans anyway, with or without your tacit encouragement.)

>>27240991

Two more and it's done for now. It's late and I'm feeling lazy today.

The story so far:
CATastrophe is a setting based off of some pictures of kemonomimi living on ocean platforms and others of cities flooded with pristine water, a world was created with the ocean flooding into the cities and chlorinated into the world's largest swimming pool by a meteoric chlorine tablet, then changed to be a world made by /tg/esque scientists when it was decided the chlorine thing was actually pretty stupid.

Remember, if anything is wrong with the world it is probably because of Williams.

So! we have a flooded earth that scientists made kemono girls and guys, whose primary species are bunnies, dogs, and cats, to survive the nanobot/whatever horror that killed humans. Rouge scientist William or "Willy" got mad that he got fired from the council of redesigning the world and poisoned parts of the water and created rouge poison clouds, made rockmonsters and robots to wreck the tranquility, and generally made a mess of things. Melting icecaps made the saltwater get thrown off enough to kill most sea life, besides a few species like sponges, some fish, crabs, octopi that may or may not have phallus tentacles [William!]. The kemono spend there time sunbathing and partying. Some explore the ruins of mankind that have been preserved by the nanobots, braving robots, silicon monsters, pirates, and klepomanders: mysterious salamander-like monsters that steal shinies from the kemono. That is everything I gathered from the last thread.

I think the idea was keep it mainly to incapacitation, but that could be changed from DM to DM. Suspense is the key form of action, not combat. The actual Shiny Dives should be a little darker than the surface part of the game. Not everyone dies miserably dark, but just a little scarier and more tense. Think Bioshock with less body horror, terrible implications, and Randian philosophy. You are even looking for old voice logs that record what the hell happened to the old world.

And yes, I love the idea of rickety ruins. Maybe the reason the kemonomimi dont inhabit all of the old towers is that a lot of them simply arent structurally sound.

You could even make that into its own game. You are a brand new kemonomimi tribe, striking it out from your old home to find a piece of the Endless Blue to call your own. First, you have to find a hospitable group of buildings, then you have to go spelunking for shinies for spruce it up, then you have to make it a worthwhile place to visit and eventually establish yourself on the waterbus trade routes.

>How did the Earless predict our language?!
Do they talk the modern world's languages? I ask because I imagined this:

> scavcats bring back a stereo and hook it up
> throw in an old cd
> the music plays

Do they understand the lyrics, or is it like listening to foreign music?

(Or some more, because I hit a text-dense part of it.)

So let me see if I cant summarize a few things we have so far in regards to fauna
>manta ray mounts
>sea turtle pack mules
>big ol crabs
>kleptomanders
>oldguards
And social structure
>parties are kind of a big deal, possibly due to being a big social bonding experience
>women are the ones who go out and hunt and scavenge and such much more so than guys
>guys tend to be scholars, mechanics, etc
>scavengers use their shinies to attract guys
>traders try to get their hands on the shinies through barter in order to do the same thing
Maybe the reason the shinies work so well at attracting mates is because, aside from the typical love of shiny objects, is due to their innate desire to learn more about the old world tech they constantly work with and history they constantly study?

The reason why shinies work so well on men is that they love to study them. Women just throw things at them.

Possibly stupid idea: Artificial intelligence backups (physically represented by holograms or robots or something) of two scientists lurk in the shadows and want to end the current way of the world. One is Williams, who wants to destroy all sentient life in a huge case of sour grapes. The other, let's call him Bunnings (Williams and Bunnings are both Australian hardware store chains - yes, I'm an idiot), wants to restore humanity and its old way of life. He's more charismatic, but doesn't really give much of a damn about the kemonomimi. He wants to restore life and give happiness, but not to those currently alive. An analogy for fans of Myst: Bunnings = Sirrus, Williams = Achenar.

To deal with these beings and plead the case of the kemonomimi, scholars of the ancient civilization of the Earless, upon learning of the two beings (who are not widely known about), groom a kemonomimi to become the equal of the two beings. He or she must wear the fabled vestment - a white coat - and become a Sy-En-Tiss, a concept discarded by the kemonomimi long ago, but now needed once more. During his or her quest, he or she ultimately learns what a Sy-En-Tiss was - a seeker of objective truth, and an obtainer of understanding.

Yeah pretty much.

Catgirls can haul an average amount, eat an average amount, have average health, have fewer turns in combat but have an extremely high chance of finding the best loot.

Bunnygirls can haul the least, eat very little, cant take a hit for the life of them, but have the most turns in combat. They are decent at finding loot, but nowhere near as good as catgirls.

Doggirls can haul a hell of a lot and are monsters in combat, having the second most amount of turns and being strong as hell. However, they eat goddamn everything and have the least interest in rooting around for treasure.

You could even give them a few racial perks, too. Catgirls get aforementioned bonus to treasure hunting, bunnygirls get something related to movement or maybe their light frames make them less likely to set off pressurized traps or cause cave-ins, and maybe doggirls have some sort of loyalty bonus where they get bonuses to combat if an ally is incapacitated.

Most of this is just spitballing, as you can see.

This seems plausible. I'll focus on combat mainly for now.
I'd think cats would have a bonus in combat with certain weapons, being the most finesse-oriented, perhaps something akin to the rapier?
The loyalty bonus seems like an amazing ability, give them a ragestate where they soak up damage?
Rabbits seem like a grey area, perhaps have stun attacks and disarms, or rolls to get out of the area?
Howabout leveling?
>>
I know that CATastrophe has evolved beyond a lot in this document.
>>
>>27243261
seems like dogs would get the fewest turns (ever seen a cat fight a dog) and dogs would be the best at finding treasure (sense of smell, burying shit and remembering where they buried it)
cats getting more turns than dogs would also fit the whole cats being average theme and be more balanced because dogs presumably do more damage

I have, and that makes sense as far as turns go, but dogs have more of a sense of smell of things that they know, but ancient tech would have taken in the sent of the surroundings, and have you ever had to hide something from a cat? They open doors, packaging, squeeze through open outlets in walls, and will not let the fuck up.

Teamwork, that's another thing.
Cats are there for gain, and possibly more leaders, dogs have that itch to please, and respond with bonuses while loyal, and rabbits are largely independent, as forward scouts and stealth ops.

Also, i've had this idea before, where overcoming obstacles would gain you skills, along with random events, such as:
>You've managed to climb the tallest tree on the island, and though your muscles ache, the view of the shimmering waters around you are ample reward. Now you only have one concern, how to get down. (add to climbing ability)

Sorta like Shadowrun skills; a big general skill group, individual skills from it, and specialisations thereof.
Thus:
Group: Longarms
Skill: Rifles
Specialisation: Sniper rifles.

Bunny Flash jump: "Keep up!"

Dog shock paddles "Don't you 404 on me!"

Weapons:
Normal: Handguns, shotguns,

Sciency: Pumped Air rifles, air canister shrapnal granades, Arc Rifle

Arc rifle acts like an arc on land DPSing one enemy. It turns into a full screen discharge that takes a long time to reload underwater.

Schools of fish

One master fish that the otehrs follow. Each school can either be infront or behind, which adds the illusion of visual depth.

Nike shoes Nik-ehs.

So do I, but it's nice to know where it came from.

Found another file!

IRC GROUP ALTERATIONS:

Less gender disparity. Higher tech, maybe?

NEW MONSTER IDEAS:

The ever-popular Hugtopus, which is definitely in

Oldguard of a few types (still working on that for ideas)

Giant Enemy Crabs

Glowchomp sharks

A type of swarming fish that lives in the deep abyss that is completely invisible due to all of it's tissues being transparent... you only know they're coming because of their unique form of sonic communication that you can feel in the water.

A type of squid that's cowardly and tends to hide, will ink and run, etc... unless there are enough of them, in which case they'll get brave and start stalking you. If they get the drop on you, they'll snag your shinies and make a quick getaway. They like things that are metallic and tend to be found around Earless ruins that are extremely deep, attracted to the lights.

The Hugtopus is basically an octopus that grabs and squeezes. It's trying to eat you, but it's mouth is a bit too small. They're still dangerous, of course, but if you whack them a few times they'll cut and run.
Of course, if you run into a really big one, things might be significantly worse.

The Glowchomps are a really sleek bio-luminescent shark from the deep ocean. They're incredibly fast and eat a ton, so they're always hungry. They're very dangerous, so they're best avoided whenever possible.

The giant enemy crab is a giant crab often encountered as an enemy. It walks sideways and has claws. If you cut it's head with scissors, it makes a really depressing reaction image.

Kleptomanders - the giant, shiny-stealing salamanders that are forever a plague upon kemomimidom. Beasts from the depths that fear neither laser pointer nor canned air!
>>
>>27243311
Rockskimmer Penguins, pic related. Not all animals died in the wake of the catastrophe, some even adapted beautifully to this new world, like the Rockhopper Penguin. Living in a region of long, flat rooftops and the tops of what were once cliff faces, the Rockskimmer Penguins use the long stretches of land to build up speeds great enough to propel their gargantuan bodies bouncing across the water like a skipping stone. After a few bounces, they level out and skim across the surface of the ocean, scooping up the Phish that lurk just beneath the ocean surface in their beaks. How they manage to maintain their velocity during all this is unknown because catgirls cant into science.

Home Life:
>Catgirls
Large open-windowed rooms with high up places to inexplicably get to and lots of warmth to bask in - nekomimi houses have prime areas for basking in sunlight all year around in them
It wouldn't stop them from simply laying wherever there is a good spot though

>Doggirls
Lots of pillowforts and Arabian style pillow seats everywhere.
Dog girls would have piles of cushions for them to rustle around in and get comfortable

>Rabbitgirls
Blanket fort burrows.
bunny girls would have little warrens of blankets in a corner of their house

>>27243305
So, detail the changes. Enlighten.
I thought this project had died for ages, after the IRC group went silent.
>>
So what do the Kemo think of the earless? I heard they were worshipped, but in what way?
>>
>>27243173
>chlorine storms
Ahahahaha. You weren't here for any of that, were you? Yeah, basically high concentrations of chlorine is a really bad idea -- it kills algae, vertebrates, and suspension of disbelief all at once. We've, uh, had that discussion. Very loudly.

>>27243202
>Rouge scientist William or "Willy" got mad that he got fired from the council of redesigning the world and poisoned parts of the water and created rouge poison clouds, made rockmonsters and robots to wreck the tranquility, and generally made a mess of things. Melting icecaps made the saltwater get thrown off enough to kill most sea life, besides a few species like sponges, some fish, crabs, octopi that may or may not have phallus tentacles [William!].
Please don't take this too far. Willy was funny in context, but like most jokes, Willy can't stay funny long.

>>27243250
>Possibly stupid idea
Probably a little too dark. Not unreasonable for a given campaign, though -- especially if the setup were Mystlike in that the AIs were unable to directly affect the world around them.
>>
>>27243323
Okay seriously if you have any more of this stuff don't post it, a lot of this is fairly useless material and the rest of it is >Opinions that amount to very basic fluff.

Secondly I don't know about you but fucking categorizing ancient ideas taken from threads that are literally a year old plus change doesn't strike me as a worthy past time.
>>
>>27243424
They aren't worshipped like gods. They're the guys who made the cities and lots of the tech that Kemos loot during dives.

Opinions on them vary from settlement to settlement and person to person.

So there is no unified opinion on Earless held by the Kemonomimis.
>>
>>27243455
IIRC, we decided against the chlorine fairly quickly for those reasons. I was in the initial Skype group until it fell apart, but missed the IRC stuff for the most part.

>>27243463
That's why it's been sitting mostly-forgotten on my harddrive. This is all I have barring unformatted skype logs.
>>
>The algae was also wiped out in the apocalypse
This is as retarded as the chlorine idea. Algae is an integral part of plankton and one of the most basic food stuffs of the ocean. Removing it would make vibrant sea life im-fucking-possible.

So yeah, this isn't canon.

>shiny rock monsters
Oh and this one is another thing I don't like, I don't even like Kav's alien moss that makes fangs. Give the Kemo special tech filters if you want water purification but silicon based monsters on top of robots is fairly pointless.
>>
>>27243567
Next time put it in a Pastebin or Google doc. Niether require downloads or anything particularly computer savvy.

>Guns
I don't see Kemonomimi using actual guns on a common basis. Stun weapons and scifi blasters which can knock someone out but not actual guns.
>>
>>27243661
In fact lethal firearms by default just aren't used.

It's a combination of the Kemomi having a almost cartoonish form of pacifism, the fact that firearms that are salvaged are so rusted out they are unsalvagable as what they were originally used, and stun weapons tend to have survived better (pre-flood super-plastics FTW).
>>
Just though of something. Cats have kidneys that are efficient enough to allow them to drink sea water with no ill effect. Can the cat girls do this?
>>
>>27243424
Well, probably not worship, not any more than we worship the ancient Greeks or Babylonians. Although there could be a few cults here or there, they'd be pretty heterogenous -- really, cults of personality dressed up in Earless trappings.

Crackpot idea: Kemonomimi also tend to have smaller social spheres than humans (due to a smaller Dunbar's number), so even without resource constraints, their social structures and settlement sizes would tend not to reach the critical mass for city formation like the Earless' did. (They do still have hierarchies and councils and so forth, just like humans, but they all tend to be ... smaller in scope.) Correspondingly, there are also no major organized religions or political movements; they just don't hold together.
>>
>>27243736
I've always thought that salt water is not a issue for drinking for short-term survival, but that can stress the drinker.

It's not as dire as when a human drinks salt-water though.

Overthinking it. There is just too scattered a population. That's why settlements are so small. They're still a few generations away from making perpetuating cities.
>>
>>27243761
Not being allowed to have cities is a little harsh, but on a general level I think that sounds good.

You still have large cities as trading ports or resource collection hubs, but they're organized differently. Like into small districts, each run differently.

Probably the most dangerous ballistic weapons they have are slingshots. I don't imagine anyone in CATastrophe world gives a rat's ass about rediscovering gunpowder.

(Incidentally, if there are more rodent Kemomi out there somewhere, wouldn't the phrase "I don't give a rat's ass" be considered racist?)
>>

Big cities as just a bunch of smaller settlements in the same structure?
>>
>>27243914
No rodent Kemo. Causes problems wit the catfolk.
>>
>>27244028
Yes, exactly. But they're referred to as districts. Each district is completely different from all the others. Different government, different rules, different architecture, different things on sale in the shops.

Really makes the cities, rare as they are, worth visiting. An adventure in and of themselves.
>>
>>27243135
In a 2-d platformer like suggested there it would be nice to actually feel a sense of accomplishement from finding loot and get excited about more than mere points when finding some earless tech
maybe have a settlement that you need to manage and multiple Kemo's that you can pick for different teams every mission
males would be like a type of loot, only mechanically of course, since they need to be kept protected inside your settlement and they give it bonuses with their different skills
>>
>>27243914
Fireworks, any gunpowder weaponry they have are based off of fireworks. Complete with pretty colors.

>>27244058
Diver's Bay is one of those. 4 Oil Rigs welded together, studded with solar panels and wind turbines. a combination of Bazzar, Ship Dock, Sup Dock, and Mooring Point for airships as well as having some fairly ritzy living quarters. It's surrounded by islands made from crago containers, tethered ships (some of which serve as floats for manions and apartment complexes), and boats that ferry between the various locations that PCs could visit. There's always a party in some part of the city, fireworks are constantly going off so you could always pick it out on the horizon and its something of a mecca for salvagers since they know ALL the good dive sites.

Something for a GM to decide, really.

Honestly, I feel like we're repeating ourselves. Almost everything that's been brought up can be answered as "it's interesting but it's something a GM can do themselves and there's no reason for it to be referenced or included in the default setting".
