You awaken, limbs feeling all but dead, in a dark location. You can't really tell where you are, and your memories are cloudy...

A spark of light flashes before you, blinding you momentarily. When your vision returns, a small table has appeared in front of you, a small deck of cards sitting on it.

"One of these is you." A voice says, seemingly everywhere and nowhere at once. "Your instincts will guide you to the correct one."


The four top cards of the deck float off, laying themselves in a line on the table.

Looking at them, you note their designs.

The first has a traveler on its face, walking left on a grey background, with a skeletal dog following behind him. When you rest your hand above the card, it feels... Familiar to you.

The second depicts a right-facing man, similar in appearance to the traveler on the first, hanging from a noose, hands clawing at his neck. A laughing jester is in the background, seemingly mocking the hanged man. A feeling of great regret, and some despair, comes from this when you lay your hand above it.

The third is painted with a priestly looking man, seemingly performing a rite upon a slab. The jester from the second card can be seen in the background as well, laughing in much the same manner as otherwise. Something of a fatherly feeling comes from this one,

The fourth card is blank, save for a single, large, question mark centered in it, surrounded by a box-like square. You can gather little else about this aside from a feeling of foreboding...


You pause for a moment, before reaching your hand to the table and picking up the object on it that you feel closest to, the-

That's it, you think, grabbing the deck itself. The four cards remaining on the table glow slightly, then slowly fade. The deck feels heavier in your hand after they do so.

"Ah, yes. Not a surprising outcome, but an unexpected one." The voice says, as the room slowly grows clearer and crisper.

...You're riding in the back of a limo. One with a very... Blue interior.

And across from you, you notice the source of that voice. A hunchbacked man with an abnormally long nose sits, hands clasped in front of his grinning face, in the middle of the bench at that end.

Other than yourself, he is the sole inhabitant of this car...


"Now, can you tell me your name?" He asks, looking you over.


You pause, drawing on your memories, before answering.


"Yu Narukami."


The man's eyes widen slightly at this, before his smile grows.

"Ah. Then allow me to welcome to the Velvet Room, Yu Narukami. I am Igor, and I shall be more than happy to assist you in your coming journey." He says, waving at the interior of the car you're riding in. "I must apologize for the small attendance- my assistant had business in the world of man that she could not delay."

The two of you lapse into silence for a moment, before he seems to notice your confusion.

"Oh, yes. The Velvet Room is a place between the conscious and the unconscious, the physical and the mental. Only those bound by a contract or possessing the capability of travel into this realm on their lonesome can enter." He says, nodding as though to himself. "And only the former may obtain my services."

"Now, before I release you to your physical form once more, do you have any questions for me?"

The man waves to the sides of the limousine briefly, before returning to the conversation.

"I also will provide you with a secure respite, should you truly come to need it. Few can enter this realm, much less breach the walls of the Velvet Room."

"My own employer is one of the inhabitants of this realm. However, a decade ago, he vanished after a project of his went awry. Since then, I have been maintaining this room, though due to the disparate powers, it is but a fraction of its original self. "

"Ah, but do not worry about that. I have a very good feeling that my fortunes are soon to change."
"Now, is there anything else you would like to ask me?"

You awaken to someone shaking your shoulder vigorously.

That's right. You were on the train to visit your uncle in Inaba when you fell asleep...

"Hey, kid." The attendant says, giving you another shake. "Ah, good. This is your stop. If you'd kept sleeping for another five minutes, we'd have had to take you with us."

Thanking the man, you gather your effects and disembark.

Going through the station, you pass by a few colorful individuals- the rather eclectically dressed brunette girl standing out the most.

Probably a hipster, or something.


Reaching the parking area, you look around for the signs of the uncle who would be picking you up.

Catching sight of a car fairly the one described to you, you head over to it to get a look at it when you hear a voice.

"Oh, hey! Are you... Yu Narukami?" Turning around, you see a rather unassuming looking man, dressed in a cheap suit. "I'm Tohru Adachi. Your uncle asked me to pick you up for him, since he's tuckered out from work because of this missing person case."

He extends a hand, sheepish expression on his face, and a smell of cabbage catching your attention as you go to return the handshake. Seems you know this fellows favorite food, now...

"I'm his partner, but mostly get stuck with the grunt work."Adachi says after the two of you exchange initial pleasantries. "So, what brings you to this sleepy little town to stay with your uncle? Parents going traveling a lot?"

You pause for a moment, before replying.

"Well, that and the fact that I haven't spoken to uncle Ryo since I was a little kid." You say, before turning to the car. "And I haven't met my little cousin at all."

"Ah, I get it. Trying to get to know family you haven't spoken to, and taking advantage of a move to do that. Not that bad of a plan." The detective returns, nodding sagely. "Not much else you can do in Inaba 'sides talking, anyway. "

"Anyway, let's get going. He's probably waiting at home, half asleep by now." The man shrugs, before heading to the car you had started to approach with you tailing.

You arrive at the Dojima residence with Adachi after a short detour to refuel.

When the detective knocks on the door, a scruffy looking middle aged man opens it.

"So, this him?" He asks, looking at you, then Adachi.

"Yep. Got you the gas you wanted too." The younger man replies, before turning around. "Anyway, I've gotta get home and eat something. See you around, kid."


With that, Adachi leaves, walking out of the neighborhood in the foggy night.

"...So, you're Yu, huh? How's my little sister doing?" The man- your uncle Ryo- says, giving you a questioning look as he lets you into the house.

"Pretty well. The move was making her stress out a lot when I last saw her, though." You reply, looking around the foyer and putting away your shoes.

"That sounds like her, alright." Your uncle replies, a small grin forming on his face. "Anyway, if you want to eat something, feel free to do so. I've set up a room for you upstairs, too, if you just want to get to sleep. Just be quiet about it, since Nanako fell asleep early. "

"The transfer was already dealt with for school, too, so you'll need to head out in the morning. I'll give you directions before either of us leaves,"

"Thanks." You return, looking around the house as you walk further in.

"Welcome to your home for the next year." Dojima says, patting you on your shoulder.
