Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a student in the Sturmfuhrer Academy and currently enrolled in its elite TIER ONE Program. You've already got your little squad together and ready, but you've run into a bit of a problem. This "teambuilding" exercise you're currently on is less "teambuilding" and more "oh god everybody is out to get you". More specifically, your teachers probably found it amusing to make everybody gang up on what was presumably the most powerful team. Yours.

Thankfully, you not only succeeded, but you soundly trounced the other teams thanks to a combination skill, guts and sheer dumb luck.

You also found out that your squad sniper, Morgan, is actually a girl posing as a boy, for reasons still unstated. However, you agreed to keep the whole thing a secret from the rest of the your squad.

You also found out in the middle of your training that you had a hidden dark side, a destructive bloodlust that triggers whenever you see someone you care about get hurt. Thankfully, you've been taking special training to suppress that urge, so it really shouldn't be a problem in the foreseeable future.

You've now graduated from Tier One, and now are an official part of the Demons of Randgriz. Not only does this meant that your school days are over, but also that you're now expected to fight when called on.

Sure enough, you're now being sent on your first official mission, which is to clear out a bunch of Empire-affiliated pirates causing trouble in Gallian waters.

Since the Skyranger is flying so low, your chute auto deploys the moment you leap out of craft. This gives you some time to try and scope out your landing zone, though it's a bit difficult considering it's still the middle of the night.

Squinting, you can make out three possible landing zones.

You can try landing on the coast, which is large and open, but you risk falling into the ocean, which also has the risk of drowning you or at the very least getting you wet, which is not ideal in the cold weather.

You can aim for a rather large clearing the forest below. The trick is to avoid all the trees around it...

And finally you can aim for the rocky highlands near the island's central mountain. Not a lot of obstacles, but there's not a lot of cover and the rocky ground has he chance of injuring you if you flub your landing.

You manage to stick a textbook landing, effortlessly flaring your chute and landing on both feet. You quickly detach the chute from your gear and roll it up so it won't be blown away by the window.

"Whoa! Heads up!" You hear Charlotte yell. You duck just in time as she swoops over your head and lands further down in the clearing, her execution just as perfect as yours. In the distance, on the opposite side of the clearing, you see Sparky and Mary-Kate touching down nearby as well.

Generally, the first you did once you hit the ground was to head for the nearest cover. After all, a paradropping operator was at the most vulnerable the moment they landed. But, Sparky and Mary-Kate were so close enough that you didn't want to risk losing track of them.

You keep a close eye out on the perimeter of the clearing, but you don't spot any movement or any other indication of hostiles. Up ahead, Charlotte manages to link up with Mary-Kate and Sparky, and they set up a quick base of fire to cover your approach. Slinging your LMG to your side, you stand up and start double timing it to their position, when you hear an odd whooshing sound...

In your focus on keeping track of the edges of the clearing, you were totally ignoring what was going on in the air. You had completely forgotten about the tow glider the Skyranger had been pulling, which was carrying your squad's Viper.

There's a series of sickening CRUNCHES as the glider, coming in a bit lower than intended, smashes through several tree branches before plowing into the field behind you, narrowly missing you by several meters.

"Whoaa..." You mutter to yourself.

A quick cursory check of the glider shows serious damage to it, but that was to be expected. The cargo inside was protected by shock absorbers in case of this very situation, and from what you can tell, the Viper is largely intact.

"So uh, what do we do with it?" Charlotte asks.

"Well, we have to call in its position." You say.

"Wraith Lead, we've got eyes on the Viper." You announce on your radio. "Touched down at drop point Bravo. Might want to send Runaround to grab it before someone else does."

"Roger that. Wraith Three." Simo replies. "Runaround is en route. What's your status?"

"I've linked up with Wraith Five, Wraith Eleven, and Sparky." You say. "Holding position until Runaround gets here."

"Good. Once Runaround gets the Viper running report to rally point for further instructions."

"Roger that, sir." You click off your radio and ready your weapon. Hopefully Runaround wasn't too far. Sitting out here in this clearing made you a bit more exposed than you would like. While the glider and the Viper inside could provide some decent cover, one good lance hit would turn it into a crater...

"We're too exposed out here, let's get into some better cover." You whisper, pointing to the forest.

Charlotte and Mary-Kate nod and they silently break off to clear the forest. Once their satisfied the area is cleared, there's a brief flash of a strobe light to let you know it's safe to move. You and Sparky pack up your weapons and enter the forest.

You all keep an eye on the glider and the Viper within for several very long minutes. However, you hear a rumbling sound in the distance. You swing your gun around and see a small, beat up pickup truck breaking out of the bushes and start trundling its way to the glider. Were they pirates? Civilians? You couldn't tell. You remember the briefing mentioning a small civilian presence on the island, and even though they were most likely collaborating with the pirates, wiping out a bunch of unarmed civvies didn't really sit well with you.

However, what you did know that due to the angle it was approaching from, if you delayed too long the truck would end up behind the glider, spoiling any chance for you to get a shot in at it.

Warning shots do not work. Ever. There's this story from the 03 invasion of Iraq where the Army set up a roadblock with some Kurds. This one pickup wasn't slowing down, so one of the soldiers fired a warning shot. The rest turned the truck into swiss cheese. Plus you give away the fact that we are here.

>>
>>27116220
"Do we fire?" Sparky asks, arming her lance.

"Negative." You whisper. "We need positive ID, first. I don't want to accidentally blow up a bunch of civilians on our first op."

It's at this point you wish you had Morgan or Simo or anybody with decent optics to make out who was in the truck. However, you'll just have to rely on good old fashioned human eyes to figure it out.

Fortunately for you, the truck actually stops well before it reaches the glider, and you see a pair of figures hop out. Squinting your eyes to pierce the darkness, you see that it's a pair of unarmed kids, who were probably (un)lucky enough to be in the area to see the glider come down.

This kind of left you in a bit of a quandary. You had no way of telling if these kids were collaborators or not. Would they warn the pirates about your presence? There was no way to know. Plus, Runaround should be arriving any second now, and you're afraid of what might happen if he runs into these kids.

To be fair, these were just a pair of kids, so they weren't exactly the most observant of individuals. However, one of them does seem to get an impression that something is deeply wrong and instinctively turns around. You see his eyes widen as he sees what are presumably three living shadows materializing behind him.

He yells a warning to his buddy but at that point it's too late. Charlotte and Mary-Kate lunge and tackle both of the kids. Mary-Kate struggles with her target for a bit, but an M60 to hovering in front of his face convinces the kid to stop struggling.

With the kids secured, you move on to inspect the truck. You don't find anything of note, so, there's little possibility they called in the glider landing. Either way, it was best to make sure of these things.

"What are you doing out here?" You ask one of the kids.

"What are YOU guys doing out here?" Kid 1 retorts.

"I'd answer that, but I'm not the one with guns being pointed at. Answer the question." You say sternly.

"We just saw something fall out of the sky. Thought it was like, a meteor or something, or one of those planes the pirate's fly crashed or something." Kid 1 mumbles.

You nod. It doesn't seem like they're enemy spies or scouts or anything.

In the background, you can see Runaround finally arrive with Lucina providing him backup. They both glance in your direction curiously, but seeing that you've got the situation under control they continue on to the glider to retrieve the Viper.

Well, as long as you had these kids held prisoner, you might as well try and pump some information out of them if they had any.

"Okay, what do you know about the pirates here, then?" You ask.

"W-we don't know anything!" Kid 2 finally speaks up. "We just live in a small fishing village on the northern end of the island! The pirates just came in here a few months ago, and told us to stay out of the south end, and they wouldn't bother us! That's all we know! Honest!"

You glance at Charlotte and Mary-Kate. Charlotte shrugs, suggesting that you're not going to be getting anything more out of these kids.

"Alright, I believe you. Unfortunately, you're going to have to take a quick nap for now..."

With that, two swift strikes with rifle butts and the two kids are down. You tie them up and drag them to the glider wreckage. You'll have to make a note later to send someone to retrieve them after the mission was done.

Suddenly, the night air is disturbed by the rumbling of the Viper's engine, and the large wheeled vehicle slowly backs out of the glider.

"We're in business!" Runaround announces. "All aboard the Runaround Express! Keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times..."

With your transport up and running, you all pile into the Viper as it shuttles you off to the rally point. Most of the squad is already there, but you notice one person missing.

"Hey, Simo." You walk up to your commanding officer. "Where's Falynn?"

"We don't know. We've been trying to contact her but we're getting no response." Simo frowns, obviously troubled as well. "But we're already running behind schedule. The attack is going to happen in five hours and we haven't even gotten to the base yet. We're going to have to move out soon."

"Shouldn't we do something, though?"

"We can go search for her right now, or leave a search team behind to look for her, but I don't like the idea of using up precious time or splitting our strength." Simo sighs. "Or we leave right now and hope she can catch up with us."

As much as you didn't like it, there was still the mission to complete, and you couldn't afford to waste time or resources to try and find Falynn. At least enemy presence up here was almost zero, so she would have little to worry about.

"What the fuck do you mean, 'trust her to take of herself'!?" You hear Charlotte scream.

Aw nuts, you almost forgot that Charlotte was present as well. This was going to be problematic.

"Like I said before, Charlotte, we can't afford to stay here." Simo repeats himself. "Falynn went through all the same training as us. If something went wrong, she should be more than able to handle it."

"Yeah, bullshit." Charlotte spits. "If you're not going to look for her, then I will!"

"Can't you send in Lucina to help?" You ask.

"Denied." Simo says almost instantly. "Lucina's our only scout. We need her to scope out the base."

"Fine, then I'll go with Charlotte, then." You respond. "Bragg's also a gunner, so you'll still get your heavy support."

Simo frowns and closes his eyes for a few seconds as he tries to wrap his head around this new situation.

"Fine. You and Charlotte can search the area for Falynn. The rest of us will proceed with the mission. In exactly one hour I'll send Runaround back with the Viper to pick you up. He'll only wait for fifteen minutes, and after that he's GONE. You'll be on your own then. Is that clear?"

"Crystal." Both you and Charlotte nod.

"Okay, Wraiths! We're moving out!" Simo yells to the rest of the squad. "Load up in the Viper!"

With that, the Viper's loading ramp closes and the vehicle barrels off into the night, it's lit silhouette disappearing behind the trees and the darkness until it's just you and Charlotte in the forest. It's one of those situation where you're normally afraid of being stuck alone with Charlotte, because who know what she'd try pull on you, but you can tell Charlotte is too distracted worrying about Falynn to care.

"Yeah..." Charlotte nods, her voice a bit weak. It's almost unsettling seeing her like this.

"Okay, so let's plan this out." You say as you and Charlotte move deeper into the forest. "We know she didn't land in the clearing, so that means she headed for either the highlands or the beach as her landing point. Charlotte, you were right behind Falynn when we jumped, right? Do you remember which way Falynn was headed?

"We were both trying to go for the clearing, but I got hit with a sudden gust a wind and I lost sight of her after that."

"Okay, so that means she can't be that far." You nod. "Wait... the beach is the northernmost drop point, right?"

"Yeah." Charlotte nods.

"And the clearing the drop point farthest south?"

"Yeah..."

"Uh oh." You frown. "The rest of the squad dropped on the beach an the highlands. If none of them came across Falynn when they made their way to the drop point..."

Both you and Charlotte push your way into the forest quickly yet quietly. Though there weren't SUPPOSED to be any hostiles in the area, you couldn't be too careful, especially when it came to trusting shaky intel.

"Look." Charlotte points up to the trees. You crane your head up to see a parachute and an empty harness tangled in the branches in the branches above.

"Has to be Falynn's." You note.

And then your hearing, finely tuned thanks to countless hours of trying to stalk Lucina and her mother during training, picks up a noise. It's faint, but familiar. It's the sound of a magazine being slotted into a pistol.

You glance at Charlotte, who's heard the same thing, You nod at her and she begins to approach the source of the noise while you follow close behind.

"Fal? Fal, is that you?" Charlotte whispers.

"C-Char?" You hear Falynn's voice croak. It... didn't sound like she was in good shape.

"Fal!" Charlotte lowers her weapon and rushes to her sister, who was taking cover behind a rather large tree. You keep your own gun up and ready, just in case.

"How bad is it?" You whisper.

"Broken leg." Charlotte winces. "Fal, what the hell happened?"

"I m-messed up." Falynn whimpers. "I overshot the landing and got stuck in the trees. I tried cutting myself out of my harness but I was too high up and... well..."

"Shhhh, it's okay." Charlotte pulls out her ragnaid and pops it, holding it over Falynn's injured leg. "Where the heck did your gear go?"

"Lost it when I hit the trees." Falynn mumbles. "Could be anywhere now."

"Okay, done." Charlotte, packs up the spent ragnaid. "How's it feel."

"Well, it's not broken anymore, but it still kinda hurts."

"Damn. Lucas, you think you can help her?"

"Yeah." You nod. Charlotte pulls Falynn to her feet, and then slings Falynn's arm around your back so that you can act as a makeshift crutch.

"You can still shoot?"

"Yeah, I can manage." You nod.

"What should we do about her gear?" She asks.

You pause for a second. On the one hand, Falynn's pack was just gear, and was ultimately replaceable. On the other hand, it was all pretty valuable stuff like your extra ammo, ragnaids, as well as her engineering equipment, which could prove to be a great tactical asset. Plus, there was the chance someone could find it...

You set Falynn down at the foot of the tree for just a minute as you go to search for her gear. However, no soon then you set her down and round the tree, your leg catches on something and you trip and fall flat on your face.

Sure enough, Falynn's pack was right there on the ground, literally on the opposite side of the tree she was hiding behind.

"Falynn, did you realize your pack was literally within arm's reach of you this entire time?" You sigh.

"O-oh my gosh!" Falynn squeaks. "I...I didn't know! Honest!"

Shaking your head, you toss Falynn's pack to Charlotte, who slings it around her shoulder and the three of you quickly make your way back to the rally point as fast as you can.

"I'm sorry for screwing up like that." Falynn whispers to you so Charlotte can't hear. "I... I'm not cut out for this... am I?"

You sigh, take Falynn's hands, and plant them firmly in your fluffy hair in order to calm her down.

"Everyone has bad days Falynn. And paradropping in a forest? One of the worst times to have one." You say reassuringly. "Stuff happens, especially during a nighttime stealth drop into enemy territory. Heck, I almost got squished by the Viper when it landed. Now THAT would have been an embarrassing way to die. Anyway, you're alive and the mission is still good to go, so no harm done right?"

"Y-yeah." Falynn tries to suppress a snicker at your near death experience. "I-I'll do my best!"

"You're already the best, Falynn." You return the grin.

"D-don't say things like that!" Falynn bops you on the head.

"Ow, what was that for?"

"Fal! Lucas! What's the holdup back there?!" You hear Charlotte calling out.

"Oh, um, we're coming!" You yell back. You take Falynn's arm again and sling it around your shoulders.

By the time you get back to the rally point, the Viper is ready and waiting, lights off but the engine idling, ready to go.

"Hey, looks like you found her." Runaround nods as the three of you board the IFV. "Okay, better buckle up because we are GOING!"

(cont)
>>
>>27119826
And of course, Runaround drives like he typically does, fast and reckless. He never did quite understand that sometimes, vehicles could hold more than one person. Fortunately, he manages to navigate the forest without problem. When you start nearing MOSES, he begins to slow down, until finally you come to a full stop.

"And here's our observation point." Runaround announces. "Better report in to Simo."

You nod and dismount while Charlotte helps Falynn out of the vehicle. You see the other Wraiths having taken up defensive positions along a ridge overlooking MOSES.

"You found her?" Simo asks as he drops down from a tree.

"Yeah." You nod. "Got injured during the drop. She never would've made it to the rally point without help."

"I see..." You swear you can see Simo frown, but he quickly refocuses his attention. "Okay, we've already gotten the base under observation, so all we need to do is wait. However..."

"However what?" You blink.

"We've been observing some odd movements." Simo sighs. "There's some container ships in the harbor. Civilian registries, and none of them reported stolen or boarded. It's just... a bit suspicious."

"Okay." Simo returns. "Predator's agreed to go in and investigate those ships. Wraith and Metal will be on standby. If Predator gets spotted, it'll be up to us to create a distraction."

"But... what's going to make them ignore somebody infiltrating their harbor?" Lucina asks.

"Oh, a number of things." Simo shrugs. "There's three areas we can hit that will guarantee the majority of the base will come running to. We either hit their fuel depot, their planes, or their command center."

Taking a look at MOSES, you'd have to agree that those were the pirates' most valuable assets. However, each would require a different method of assault. The fuel depot couldn't just simply be set off by any bullets or lance hits. You'd need specialized explosives put in the right place for maximum effect, meaning you'd have to send Falynn in to handle that. The planes were relatively fragile and easy to disable with long range gunfire, but you'd have to get close to the long, flat runway to get in effective range, which makes you insanely vulnerable to enemy fire. Finally, the command center would require a full infantry assault in order to threaten it, but the plus was that any damage you could do there meant it would be guaranteed to knock out or damage their ability to coordinate their defense.

After what seems like hours (well, literally two hours had passed), Predator Team finally reports in.

"This is Predator Lead. We searched through all three ships. It's the weirdest thing..."

"What, weapons?" Simo asks.

"No, it's... all high grade undersea drilling equipment." Predator Lead reports. "You know, the kind of stuff they use for offshore ragnite mining."

"What the hell would pirates want with stuff like that?" Simo sounds just as baffled as Predator Lead.

"No idea, but we've snatched the shipping manifests and captains' logs from all three ships. Guess this is something for the spooks to figure out."

"Okay, good job, Predator Lead. I owe you one." Simo says.

"You owe us drinks, is what."

"When we get back." Simo smirks. "Now get the hell out of there. The fireworks are gonna start soon."

"Roger that."

Suddenly, the radio crackles with a new voice.

"This is the Lion of Gallia calling shore parties. Do you read?"

"Reading you loud and clear, Lion." Simo replies. "Status?"

"Ready for bombardment. Just give us the coordinates."

"Whoa, wait, you mean they actually sent out the LION!?" You gape.

"Well, I guess Jager just really, REALLY wanted an excuse to use it." Simo laughs.

The Lion of Gallia was once known as the Lion of the Empire, one of the Empire's mightiest battleships that was sunk during EWII. However, several years later, the Demons, now flush with cash, had the Lion raised and salvaged and rechristened. Unfortunately for Jager, Sam wasn't so appreciative of him blowing so much money on what was obviously a vanity project...

"Okay, kids, it's time for the REAL fun to start." Simo says. "What should we demolish first?"

"Have them hit the main base." You say. "That should put the fear of Gallia into them."

"Excellent." Simo then begins relaying the coordinates to the Lion.

"Roger that. Firing for effect."

You don't actually hear the cannons firing, since they're so far away, but you DO hear the incoming shells. They're so damn large that it sounds like a freight train is falling out of sky, and even makes your teeth chatter before they even hit the ground.

Meanwhile, the main MOSES compound is bracketed with massive explosions as the shells land. While the buildings were heavily fortified specifically to protect against bombardment, there was only so much that could withstand the full might of a battleship's broadside.

Suddenly, the entire base explodes with activity as troops rush to battle stations and vehicles of all kinds, both combat and support, begin swarming every which way to either protect important facilities or perform damage control. At the airfield, the planes begin powering up their engines and moving to the runway for takeoff.

"Hey, Simo, we should do something about those planes." You point out.

"Hmmm... Bragg, Lucas, get in the Viper and go pester them a bit."

"Yes sir!"

You both fit your respective MGs on the Viper's pintle mounts and Runaround guns the engine. The Viper roars as it barrels toward the airfield.

The combination of yours and Bragg's MG fire rips through the thinly armored planes. Between the two of you, you manage to knock out two planes through sheer volume of fire. Meanwhile, the Viper's 25mm autocannon literally blasts a plane to pieces.

However, at this point, several tanks and other armored vehicles notice your approach from all the tracer's you're spitting out and begin shelling your position. Even though most of the tanks were EWII-era relics, a solid hit from those heavy cannons of theirs could still ruin the Viper's day.

>Keep going! We haven't destroyed nearly enough planes yet!

A 25mm won't do shit. The lances might, but even then, we're a one-hit-kill to their main guns.

"Keep going!" Bragg yells. "We haven't destroyed nearly enough planes yet!"

In response, Runaround hits the gas and the Viper goes even faster. You actually bust through the chain link fence separating the airfield from the outside world, causing steel wire to snap and scream as it is ripped apart. Afterwards, you're on the airfield proper, still pumping automatic fire into the approaching planes while trying to dodge tank cannon shots.

You score a couple more hits on the planes, knocking one more out and the Viper's cannon blows the wing off another.

However, that's when the tank shells hit.

The first shell strikes the front of the Viper, but fortunately it's at an angle the shell bounces off, merely scoring the armor and causing the whole vehicle to shake. Unfortunately, a second shell hits much harder, actually sending the Viper into a flat spin.

"Whoa, shit! Is everybody okay?" Runaround asks.

"I'm fine!" Bragg yells.

"Uhhhh, but the Viper, not so much." You blink. "The back is gone."

"What?"

"The back part of the Viper is GONE."

You stare at the empty space where the rear passenger ramp used to be. The second shell must have hit the Viper in the side and sheared straight through the rear of the vehicle, ripping out the entire back part of the passenger compartment. However, the horrific damage was merely cosmetic, as the Viper was still capable of moving and shooting, but it was a stark reminder your ride was not invincible.

"Runaround, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE!" Simo yells through the radio.d

"Shit, Runaround, GO GO GO!" You yell. You shower the tanks with MG fire, despite the fact you know that it's pretty useless. It at least makes you feel a little better.

Runaround meanwhile starts doing some pretty wild maneuvers, swerving every which way and even driving between the approaching tanks in an attempt to spoil their shots.

Runaround manages to punch through the tank formation and begins making his way to the trees, but the shells start falling closer and you're afraid the Viper is going to get nailed before you can reach the relative safety of the trees.

However, you hear a screeching sound and then a series of explosions. You turn to see the tank that were pursuing you having been reduced to flaming craters. You briefly think that Runaround must have shot off his disposable lances, but they're still there tucked away on the sides of the turret. It's then that you see a pair of Condors swoop overhead, launching mini lances at any vehicle caught in their sites.

Suddenly, there's a loud PING PING PING as heavy caliber rounds start bouncing off the Viper's hull.

"Blue on blue! Blue on blue! We're friendly, you asshole!" Bragg screams on the air force frequency. The Condor that was trying to bracket you then pulls off. Goddamn trainees.

Well, if the Condors are here, it means that the main forces have finally arrived. When the Viper pulls back to the observation point, you can see the Demons' combined forces going to work. The Lion and several cruisers and destroyers have pushed into the harbor, reducing all of the armed pirate ships to flaming wrecks. You notice the civilian cargo ships are also aflame, though you doubt the damage was caused by your side.

Meanwhile, Condors are swooping down every which way, dropping bombs and shooting cannons at any target of opportunity. You wonder where the hell all of the pirate fighters are when you look up and realize that they're too busy tangling with a squadron of Falcons. While the pirates were clearly outmatched in both tech and training, you'd like the think that the fact you knocked five of them out before they could even take off would make a difference.

"Well, that's it. We'll just sit back and let the navy and flyboys handle the rest." Simo sighs as he puts down his rifle and leans against a tree. "Good job, everybody. Besides the rough landing and Bragg nearly getting himself, Lucas, and Runaround killed horribly, the mission went pretty well."

"That was actually pretty easy!" Mary-Kate whistles.

"Yeah, well, don't get used to it. This mission was a milk run by our standards. It only gets harder from here."

Well, like Simo said, the rest of the mission was as simple as sitting back and letting the navy and air force do the work. You watch as the Falcons dance in the air with the pirate fighters, effortlessly mowing them down in a matter of minutes while the Condors and navy ships pound the base itself. By the time the Marines land, there's almost nothing of the base left, and the few surviving pirates quickly surrender.

"Good job, everyone." Simo says as several Skyrangers land at the newly captured airfield to drop off additional personnel and ship the SOF teams out. "Debrief once we get back to base. I expect you all to report to the briefing room once you've got some rest and food, got it?"

However, you're too tired to even reply to Simo. The moment you sit in your seat you just slump down and drift off to sleep.

>And that's our first mission completed! Tune in on Friday, 7-8pm PST for the next thread!
