You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

This is your first day on the job but you're already on friendly terms with a few of the people stationed at the castle, including Sir Vincent, who it turns out is a lot nicer than he seems at first glance.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

But now you're free for the night, and decided to try and learn the layout of the castle so you don't get lost in the future and potentially embarass yourself. After a bit of wandering, you ran into the head butler Arnaud, who gave you a proper tour of the castle.

Having gotten a basic feel for the castle, Arnaud ended his tour at the kitchen.

Food time!

You take a set at a nearby table and wait for Arnaud to come back with your food. It's a rather plain table, similar to the ones back at the barracks... is this where the servants eat? You don't see anyone else eating, but that may be because of how late it is. But before you can think about that too deeply, Arnaud comes back with a rather large plate and wooden mug. You wonder how he's able to walk so easily without dropping everything he's carrying, but you chalk it up to the experience obtained from his four generations worth of butlering.

Seriously, how old is he?

"Sorry for the wait," Arnaud says as he places the food and drink on the table in front of you. "This is mostly the leftovers from what the cooks prepared for the King's meal, I hope it's to your liking."

Leftovers?

THIS is leftovers?

Before you is a massive plate filled with various breads, cheeses, and several massive turkey legs.

TURKEY LEGS.

"Oh... oh wow," you say in awe." "This is... thank you so much," you say before tearing into the food.

The taste... it's delicious. It's no exaggeration to say that this is the BEST food that you have ever eaten in your entire life. And the drink! It's just water, but somehow it's -just- above freezing, perhaps there's an enchantment on the mug itself? Never in your life did you ever imagine that you'd be able to enjoy such a feast!

You wolf down the food extremely quickly, your upbringing as a starving orphan temporarily rising to the surface. But that doesn't matter, you were HUNGRY. And the food was DELICIOUS.

"Thanks for the meal, Arnaud," you say as you wipe your mouth with a napkin, regaining your composure.
"Haha, it was my pleasure," he says with a smile, giving a deep bow. "Now if you're done eating, I shall show you to your personal quarters."
"Ah, I was just about to ask about that," you reply as you get up from your seat and follow him out the kitchen.

Arnaud guides you past the rooms that you'd seen before as he leads you to your quarters, almost as if you're... backtracking? It isn't long before he leads you into a familiar hallway.

"Arnaud, isn't this where the Princess's room is?" you ask, puzzled.
"That it is!" he replies with the tone of a teacher whose student just answered a question correctly. "You are Princess Marianne's bodyguard, so of course your quarters are close to her room, so that you may come to the rescue at a moment's notice," he says, winking at you.
"I suppose that makes sense," you reply.
"...and here we are," Arnaud says as he stops several doors down from the Princess's room.

He opens the door and leads you inside, and you are met with a large room with a single bed, a long table, a few chairs, a desk, and several other furnishings. You recognize your empty duffel bag folded neatly on chair and what looks like several of your jackets hanging in the closet.

"This entire room is mine? Doesn't this seem to be a lot?" you ask, dumbfounded. Never in your life have you had a room to yourself, much less one as large as this one. It's easily twice as big as your place in the army's barracks, and one room there housed four soldiers...
"One of the perks of being a royal bodyguard, you see," Arnaud says, clearly amused with how unused you are to this situation.

You look around your new room once more to take it all in. There's so much space! Hell, the room alone might make up for having to put up with the Princess's foul temperament!

...or maybe not. In any case, it's very nice.

"I take it that everything is your liking?" Arnaud asks.
"Ah- yes, it's great! Thanks for all your help, Arnaud," you say as you reach out to shake his hand.
"Making things run smoothly in the castle is my duty," he says as he gives you a firm handshake. "That includes making sure that new additions here get accustomed to things here as quickly as possible."

Arnaud then walks to the doorway and turns to face you.

"Goodnight, sir. I wish you a bright future here in the castle." he says, giving a deep bow.
"And goodnight to you," you reply as you return his bow.

With that, Arnaud exits the room, closing the door behind him.

Taking another look around you, you move some chairs out of the way and clear out enough space to work out. A swordsman needs to keep his body in top condition, after all.

After an hour or so of various exercises, you fall into your bed and fall fast asleep.

"Nnn..." you groan as you turn over in your bed and face the ceiling. You'd gotten accustomed to sleeping for short periods on hard surfaces, so actually getting what most people would consider a reasonable amount of sleep in a -comfortable- bed was like heaven!

Castle life is fucking great...

Your mind having shifted to Awake Mode, you sit up in your bed and look out the window. The sun just started to rise, and you silently give thanks to whatever God is out there for making sure that you didn't oversleep.

You get up from your bed and walk to the window, taking a deep breath as you open it. The cool morning air is refreshing, and serves to fully shake away any leftover sleepiness from your mind.

Then you look around and see... another door that you didn't notice before? And it's open.

You go through the doorway, and are met with... a bathtub? And sink? You immediately look around, realizing that there are no other doors to this room than the one that you just came from...

...holy shit, you have your own bathroom?

With RUNNING WATER!?

Holding back your excitement at having such lavish failities -all to yourself-, you figure that you should stop wasting time. After some fumbling with the faucets, you quickly bathe and get dressed, putting on one of several sets of new uniforms that you found hanging in your closet. A long coat with some armored plating on the chest and shoulders, pants that are easy to move in... its honestly quite nice.

"An outfit that won't embarass Her Majesty, eh..." you remark to yourself as you put on your shoes and strap on your sword.

Even after all that dawdling, it's still barely past dawn. You have a decent amount of time to spare...

Since this is your first official day as Princess Marianne's bodyguard, you figure that you should probably do your best to be as punctual as possible. She can't bitch at you about being late if you get there before her, after all.

With that in mind, you head out, taking care to close the door behind you. Remembering the route that Arnaud showed you last night, you have little trouble making it to the dining room, saluting to the various guards you see as you go.

Finally having gotten a chance to get a good look inside the dining room, you're rather stunned by the massive difference between it and the kitchen where you ate last night. The room itself is easily three times larger than your new bedroom, with the dining table itself as long as it. A beautiful tablecloth is draped over it, and it's surrounded by at least twenty chairs... you can only imagine what lavish feasts are held here.

After having gotten your fill of the sights, you step outside and wait by the door, making a point not to obstruct the way inside.

And so, you wait.

And wait.

Two hours pass, and you wonder if there's such a thing as being -too- punctual... but just as you're starting to regret getting there so early, you start to notice that the flow of maids going in and out of the room is increasing.

You'd like to be polite and say hi to them, but they seem to be quite busy... and it quickly gets to the point where you're unable to even look inside the room without bumping into someone.

And just as you realize that this means that the Royal Breakfast is imminent, you hear the approaching chatter of female voices.

As expected, its Princess Marianne, surrounded by several maids. Probably talking about princessly schedule matters or the like.

And then she notices you. Making a gesture to he maids to stop talking she walks ahead of them and approaches you.

"My, aren't you punctual. You must have woken up early... or perhaps you spent the night down here?" she says, her unpleasant temperament clearly not having been limited to just yesterday.

You hear muffled laughter- is it from the Princess? No, her face is completely expressionless. It's coming from the maids who are standing behind her. You can see them covering their mouths, apparently they thought your little remark was simply hilarious.

Nice going!

But the Princess... simply placed her hand on her forehead and let out a deep sigh.

"It's nice to see that you are a morning person," she says. "Now if that's all, I would like to have my breakfast."

Upon entering the dining room, the Princess takes a seat at the middle of the table. Immediately after she sits down, the maids quickly swarmed her, chattering and pointing to various charts they're holding before dispersing out of the room just as fast.

"Just a piece of bread would be fine, I can eat it while I stand guard here," you say to the maid. While you -are- hungry, you're here to stand guard, not eat. Some bread can hold you over until you can get some proper food.

Like turkey legs.

Delicious turkey legs.

"Oh, that's all?" the maid asks, almost sounding disappointed, you suppose she's one of those types who likes to see that everyone around her is well-fed. "Well, I'll get right on that, mister bodyguard!"

With a curtsey, she scurries off.

Shortly afterwards, some people who you recognize from the kitchen last night enter the room with a dining cart. They stop at the table, where a butler then picks up the tray and places it in front of the Princess.

"Breakfast, Your Majesty," he says with a deep bow.
"Thank you," she replies with a nod.

"I wasn't lucky enough to know either of my parents," you say as politely as you can. You try not to get too annoyed with what she said, as you doubt that someone like her would have bothered to learn about your background beforehand.

You then take a seat next to her and continue eating your bread. Fortunately, the chairs at the table are spaced widely enough that she shouldn't have any reason to complain about you invading her personal space.

"Ah-" she begins to speak, and you can see that her expression has gone completely pale. "I- I apologize for making assumptions about your upbringing. I'll try not to do so in the future," she says while looking away from you.

Is she... ashamed?

Good, it serves her right.

The princess then resumes eating, and you finish off your bread. The room is utterly silent, and the atmosphere is quite unpleasant. You hope that this doesn't set the mood for the rest of the day.

And then you see the middle-aged maid who brought you your bread approaching.

With a tray.

She places it in front of you. What's going on here?

"Eheh!" she says, beaming at you. "I see that you finally decided to take a seat, so I had a plate prepared for you!" she says happily.
"That really isn't necessary, I didn't need anything more than the bread-" you try to say, but are cut off.
"You can't protect the princess on an empty stomach! And I'm pretty sure she'd be cross if your stomach started to growl while she's off doing important princess things!"

It doesn't seem like you can get out of this. And since you aren't one to waste food, you take a look at your plate.

It's a stack of pancakes. She's also placed a cup of some kind of fruit juice next to it.

>Ask her about her day plans so we can be ready in case of unexpected things.

You take a bite of the pancakes. They're delicious!

Taking care not to lose control of yourself like you did last night and CONSUME the food in front of you, you make an extra effort to eat slowly and politely so as to not offend the Princess.

Halfway through the stack of pancakes, you stop and wipe off your mouth, turning to face her.

"So, Princess Marianne," you begin talking.
"Y- yes?" she seems a bit startled before quickly regaining her composure. Maybe she's still feeling bad about what she said?
"Would it be okay if I asked what your plans for the day are? Just in case something unexpected happens," you say.

She looks at you, raising an eyebrow in surprise.

"I suppose it would make sense to tell you my schedule," she says as she regains her usual composure. "Since you'll be accompaning me throughout the day, it would be... annoying to have to explain where we are going every single time I change locations," she says.

Yes, she's back to normal.

"After breakfast, I have history lessons and then tutoring in matters of politics. This will last until noon, when I'll have a short break for tea. Then in the afternoon, I have ballroom dancing and etiquette lessons, and that's all of my responsibilities for the day. Did you get all of that?"
"That I did, Princess," you reply with a nod.

The two of you then resume eating, finishing off your plates rather quickly. After the servants retrieve your dishes, the Princess gets up from her seat and motions for you to follow her.

"It's time for my first lesson. Please try to keep up, I dislike being late."

With that, the two of you leave the room and head towards one of the castle's many libraries.

Her lessons go by rather quickly, the history class being taught by an elderly fellow with a long beard whose name you didn't quite catch. He went on about the "Old Kings" or something, rattling off several unfamiliar names and historic details for well over an hour. You didn't really pay attention, instead deciding to take mental notes of all the potential ambush points in the library.

The second lesson was given by... Sir Gregory? That's certainly unexpected, you never took him for the type to have any interest in politics.

Then you realize that he had to serve as both her temporary bodyguard -and- her tutor for however long it's been since your predecessor quit, and you can't help but feel VERY sorry for him.

And finally, it was noon. You follow the princess to the courtyard, and remembering this morning, take a seat across from her at a circular table.

You hear the door creak, and a familiar figure steps out carrying a full teaset with one hand.

You're pretty impressed with Arnaud's sense of balance.

Arnaud places the teaset onto the table and proceeds to pour a cup for the Princess, then doing the same for you.

"Thank you, Arnaud," you say with a nod.
"It's my pleasure, sir," he replies with a bow. "If either of you needs anything else, just call for me and I shall be there," he says before leaving the two of you in the courtyard alone.

You see the Princess begin to drink her tea, so you decide to do the same. You may have grown up in the slums, but you did learn to never eat or drink before the people you were with had started.

The tea itself is delicious, its fragrant aroma accompanied with the slightly bitter taste of blah blah blah. You're no gourmand or tea critic or anything, all you know is that the tea is Very Good.

You sip your tea as you look around the courtyard, appreciating the effort that the gardeners took to make everything look so nice. Also, you do your usual scan for exits and ambush points and the like. Deep in thought, your attention is broken by the sound of the Princess clearing her throat.

"About this morning," she began speaking, "I really do apologize for what I said. I myself know what it's like to be raised without a mother, and the thought of never having known one's parents at all... I am sorry if I brought up any unpleasant memories," she says with a sullen expression.

"It's fine, Princess," you say as you place your cup on the table. "To be honest, I'm used to hearing a lot worse about my lack of parentage, and it's not like you knew about my situation beforehand." you say.

She did strike a nerve, but it's not like what she said was ANYWHERE near the hateful insults that have been thrown at you in the past. And she does seem honestly remorseful for what she said, so you decide to forgive her.

"And I'm sorry if I brought up any unhappy memories for you, Princess," you reply.
"No, don't worry yourself. Let's just let this incident pass, and not bring it up again," she says as she takes another sip of her tea.

The two of you spend the rest of the teatime without another word. After a while, a maid steps into the courtyard and bows. This is apparently a signal that teatime is over, and the Princess gets up from her seat and motions for you to follow her.

Back to her lessons, you guess.

You follow her through the castle for a few minutes, now entering an unfamiliar part that Arnaud hadn't shown you during his tour last night. She stops in front of a door which is then opened by a nearby guard. You then follow her inside the room, saluting the guard as you pass.

This new room is quite barren, with no actual furniture aside from a few chairs by the windows. Remembering what the Princess told you before, you figure that this is her ballroom dancing class.

Yeah, you have no interest in this kind of thing whatsoever. Time to focus on escape tactics again...

...but you aren't able to do so, as who you -assume- to be the dance instructor is right in your face.

WAY too close.

An elderly lady with her hair done up in a ridiculous bun grabs both of your hands in hers, squealing in that way you've seen fangirls a third of her age do.

It is -quite- offputting.

"My, my, my! If it isn't Reinhold! I watched your exploits during the tournament with MUCH interest, let me tell you! And your footwork! It was DIVINE! I knew from the start that you'd win!" she said while holding your hands intently. You aren't good with this type of person...
"Er, thanks?" you say uneasily.
"Oh, you absolutely -must- assist in today's lessons! I absolutely insist!"

"Er- um- I can if you really need me to, but I'm not sure if..." you choke out as the dancing instructor maintains her deathgrip on your hands.

You make a pleading look at the Princess, hoping that she'd maybe bail you out here. After all, you're of low birth! You've never danced before! And you sure as hell don't want to start now!

But Princess Marianne says nothing, simply standing there with a smile on her face.

God damn it, she's ENJOYING this.

"Alright, I give," you say as you lower your head in total defeat. There's no getting out of this, it seems.
"Splendid!" the lady says as she -finally- releases your hands.

She then pushes you into the middle of the room and does a curtsey.

"My name is Pauline, and I've taught dance to three generations of the royal family. With your assistance, I'll show our dear Princess how this dance is supposed to look in action," she says as she takes your hand.

"So, what exactly am I supposed to be doing here?" you ask.
"Just place your foot here and your left arm here, and then do this..." she says as she manually moves your limbs into the correct positions. "Now step forward -just- so, and..."

The next ten minutes or so are spent with Pauline guiding you into place and you imitating what she tells you. You honestly have no idea what goal this is supposed to serve, but she seems pleased with your performance.

And as you don't see any negative reactions from the Princess either, you assume that you didn't do too horribly.

After a while, you are finally released from your torture. Pauline switches her attentions to the Princess, taking the male position of the dance that you were just doing as Princess Marianne assumes the female part. You assume that it looks good, though you have no eye for such things.

At the very least, you're pretty sure that they're dancing a lot better than you just were.

The butler drones on and on and ON about proper cutlery placement, the proper distance that two unmarried people should sit at the dinner table, proper tea-drnking form, and so many other things.

So many BORING things.

You manage to pay attention to most of it, but your mind starts to wander towards the end.

Seriously, what obsessive-compulsive bastard decided on all this arbitrary garbage, and why does polite society accept it so readily? Some of it makes logical sense, yes, but then there are things like how to properly hold a teacup in a ladylike manner that just leaves you in awe at how trivial they are.

But the torturous lecture has finally come to an end, and the two of you are freed.

As you leave the dining room, Princess Marianne turns to you.

We lived, breathed, ate, and drank swordsmanship, we practiced every moment we could while working as an errand boy in the whorehouse, and eventually we got good enough to go into the dueling circuit.

Where would we have found the time to learn to read?
>>
>>27112786
maybe a little in the army? we need to read orders after all.
>>
Rolled 19

>>27112786
as a young child, you could say we got inspired by the stories in books to be a knight.
>>
>>27112813
>19
Well, I guess we were, then.
>>
>>27112786
we didnt jump from whorehouse to duel. there are years spent on army btween them. we could've learnt swordmanship in army ( which much more likely)
>>
>>27112812
Not really... that's what officers are for.

>>27112813
And who would've taught us? The illiterate whores?
>>
Rolled 1

>>27112838
Not all whores are illiterate, and
>>27112833
has a point.
>>
>>27112637
Depends on the church, and how far up in the military we were. Or whether the printing press exists
>>
Have some phone calls to make, I'll close voting and start writing when I'm done.
>>
>>27112833
We may have learned more swordsmanship in the army, but if you look at the first post of the first installation of this quest it says we spent every spare minute since we were a child practicing.

We obviously have picked up some other skills, but we've been learning to sword since we were a child.
>>
I think we should try to be a bit friendly, but never more than just being courteous. We're being paid to be her guard, not fuck around.

Even though its highly unlikely an assassin snuck in to kill her, if it does happen, at least our guard would be up.
>>
Rolled 11

>>27112922
true, but a child is a broad term and we don't our age yet.
>>
>>27112833
It's possible we learned from a veteran sword-master. What a veteran sword-master would be doing in a small fishing village is up OP. How we met him is also up to the OP. Someone started us of with proper form and maybe they put in a good word for us in the army boot camp.
>>
Rolled 9

>>27113033
This also works, i'm still up for a sob story so either the whore house or something happening to the old man.

Well I think:
>>27112888
^'s first and last are most likely reasons for literacy.

If the printing press has been invented, that means literacy will be far more widespread. If the church dealt with orphans at all, theres a good chance he's literate.
>>
>>27113033
we could've learnt from 5cm long aliens. how we met them in a small village whorehouse is up to OP.
>>

5cm long not tall. How does that work? 0.o

what you readin

"This is the same book that you were reading last night?" you ask, a bit curious. "Might I ask what book that is, Princess?"
"Eh?" she looks at you with a bit of surprise. "It's a biography of one of the Old Kings... or I suppose she would be an Old Queen. I figured that as the next in line to the throne, I would do well to learn about successful female rulers of the past." she said.
"Huh, that's rather... scholarly," you reply.
"It's actually quite interesting, and the author did a rather good job of keeping it from getting boring..." she stops talking and stares at you.
"Um... is something wrong?" you ask, confused.
"Can you read?" she asks in serious tone. "I don't mean any offense, but I don't see any point in talking about books to someone who is unable to appreciate them."

>>
Rolled 12

>>
>>27114369
Pardon me, but does the ability to read really hinder the ability to appreciate books?
We don't need to know how to read to know the full importance of books, or to know that they contain history, entertainment, love, drama, war, all that kinda stuff.
>>
>>27114675
There's a lot of subtle nuance of English that's only conveyed by the way the words are written.

Most of our puns and jokes, for instance, stem from the differences in spelling. (I can hardly bear to bear being this bare)
>>
Rolled 5

>>27114675
I second this, even if we can read make the MC say this.

>>

true, but it still doesn't stop ones enjoyment of books.
>>
>>27114738
I never said we couldn't ENJOY it, but the brat of the princess is right: You can't fully appreciate it without being able to fully experience it.

That's not to say, however, that appreciation can't be derived from the situation in another way. It would be pretty adorable if she taught us to read or read us books aloud.
>>
>>27114591
Its unlikely her snootiness would teach us to read....
Unless having an illiterate lout as a body guard were an embarrassment then perhaps.
More likely she will have a MAID teach us.
>>
>>27114782
and siad maid shall be the booty to conquer.
>>
>>27114782
The genre demands that it be the princess who teaches us.
>>
>>27114777
She won't teach us to read, that would be beneath her station!

Now... the Maids on the other hand. They probably need to know how to read in case they receive a written order or request, right?
>>
>>27114835
at least the high ranking ones need to know.
>>
>>27114369
You remember your childhood at the brothel.

Doing whore laundry, washing whore beds, serving whore drinks, and keeping whore records.

The owner of that establishment liked to keep a written record of all its clients, just in case they managed to hook in someone who they'd be able to blackmail later. And seeing as someone had to be able to write in order to take said records, you had that ability beaten into you. Like most of the other things you learned back then.

"Yes, I can read. It was... a necessary skill for the work I had to do when I was younger," you reply, figuring that your brothel story wouldn't be the most appropriate thing to tell a princess.
"Hm, that is a surprise," Marianne replies. "Perhaps I shall lend the book to you after I finish reading it."
"Thanks for the consideration," you reply.

After talking for a little while longer, you finally reach the Princess's room.

"Today was a bit better," she says. "You still have poor manners, but it was amusing watching you flail around like a lizard on the dance floor."

with that, Princess Marianne closes the door behind her, and you are finally free!

>what do you do for the rest of the night?
>>
>>27114835
I doubt it. Of the servants I'd expect only Arnaud and people in similar stations as he have even the slightest of how to read, let alone write.

Controlling literacy was a supremely effective tactic for maintaining control in feudal societies.
>>

First, hit the kitchens, grab some food, it may be leftovers but if we can grab stuff right out of the oven so much the better.

While we're at it schmooze with the chefs and cooking staff, complement their cooking, complement the hell out of any female ones, especially the older ones who have been in the kitchens forever, befriending them is good.

After food we can go and find the training yard and get some practice and sparring in, can't get rusty after all.
>>

See if we can find a maid/s and see if every day is like this. Acquire food and practice.

Nah, OP seems to be writing pretty standard for the genre.

That means that after we gib the roughly dozen to 30~ assassins that come after her and then come check on her with our still fresh wounds and torn shirt she will secretly swoon and the dere will start to sneak through.

First we're a person. Then the guy who's with her everyday and knows her schedule and life. Then we save her life. Then we're the only one she can openly confide in because we don't judge. Then comes "I need you to be in my room because I'm terrified they'll try again."
Etc. etc.

Free for the rest of the night, you head down to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat. Maybe they have some turkey legs.

You really hope that they have some turkey legs.

Working your way down the stairs, you pass by several guards and maids, greeting them as you go. Might as well become a familiar face around the castle, after all.

As you walk through the entrance to the kitchen...

"Whoa! Sorry, there!" you hear a voice say as you stop dead in your tracks.
It's the older maid from this morning, apparently she was just bout to leave the kitchen as you entered. As she realizes who you are, you see a wide grin form on her face.

"Oh, so it's mister Reinhold! Here to get some food, I take it? Sit right here and I'll fix you up a plate!" she says as she pretty much pushes you towards one of the tables.

2. Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good. To maintain their Influence over Men, they supply the Diminution of Beauty by an Augmentation of Utility. They learn to do a 1000 Services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of all Friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable. And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old Woman who is not a good Woman.

She doesn't even seem to notice that you're there.

"Um... hi," you say, waving at your hungry neighbor.

Before you can say anything else, she grabs a nearby mug and chugs it down like it was the water of life, then places it back down when she finishes.

The way his childhood's been referenced I imagine he should be able to stomach the princess for a while without problems.

Laugh a bit, but say that it isn't that bad.

Then we try and get a sparring buddy for the mornings.

>>27117274
Laugh and reassure her that we won't tell, and that the Princess, while she can be a handful, isn't all bad.
Ask Nicolette what her position is in the Royal Guard, and if she'd mind sparring with us sometime.

Laugh a bit.

"Well I'm not going to say that it's the most pleasant of jobs. But I've dealt with far worse for far less, and it's really not all that bad once you get the hang of it.

Though I didn't know I was that famous.

So, how many people are in the Royal Guard? Any names in particular I should know?

What's your job in the Guard?

If you wouldn't mind would you like to go to the training yard with me sometime and beat each other with blunted swords?"

"Eh, it's not that bad," you say with a nervous laugh. "You just need to be patient, and I'm used to dealing with a lot worse."
"If you say so," she replies. "For as long as I've known her, the only people I know of who she isn't absolutely horrible towards are Vincent and the King."
"Wow, really?"
"Yeah, she's a total Daddy's girl. It's really weird when you see the difference between how she acts around him and how she is around everyone else."
"So she actually likes Sir Vincent too?" you ask, surprised.
"Yeah, he's like best friends with the King so he's known her all her life. He doesn't take her bullshit, I think she's actually afraid to act how she usually does around him."
"Wow."

Sir Vincent's legend grows...

"Uh, but what about Sir Gregory?" you ask, remembering that he was her interim bodyguard up until yesterday.
"Yeah... he can barely stand her," Nicolette says, her previously cheery mood subsiding. "He was absolutely miserable about the prospect of having to be around all day long, and would not shut up about how he wishes that someone would have disiplined her before she became... that." she says with a sigh.

Speaking of his skills with a sword: for any rolls related to his swordsmanship are you going to do something like replacing the lowest roll with a 10 or something to represent how skilled he's supposed to be and lessen the blow /tg/'s shitty dice is liable to have?

I was looking for fucking ever trying to find this image & kept thinking 'Why isn't this in my Fire Emblem folder?'. Turns out I was thinking about the wrong franchise and found it in my Suikoden folder. That I keep forgetting about.

Maybe he meant the version from Fate/Stay Night? The dude did manage to do something ridiculous through pure skill alone.

Uhh.... which of those is supposed to be the good side of the scale? Also, was "Chojiro" a misspelling or are you ACTUALLY referring to that one faggot from Bleach rather than the famous Sasaki "beaten to death by a bokken while using live steel" Kojiro?

Seeing that the subject of the Princess is a sore one, you decide to try talking about something else while you wait for your food.

"So, you're in the Royal Guard? What's your position," you ask.
"Guard captain," she replies with a proud smile. "Only folks around here who outrank me are the Knights, and I intend to be one of those one day. Well I guess you outrank me too, mister bigshot Royal Bodyguard," she says as she slaps you on the back playfully.

Wow, guard captain. She doesn't look any older than you are, so her rank is most likely due to sheer skill...

"Just a question, were you in the Royal Swordmanship Tournament?" you ask. "I've never seen you before but if you're a Guard Captain, I assume that you're pretty strong."
"Nope," she replies. "I'm shit with swords, my weapon of choice is the lance. Too bad there isn't a royal tournament for that... but I dunno if I'd want to enter if the reward is being stuck as Marianne's babysitter," she says with a laugh.

Well in relation to Fate we're closest to Assassin from Fate/Stay Night.

We don't have any weird magic, we are not a god or king, we are not a ruler of men, we are not blessed by anything mystical, we carry no artifacts. We're nothing but a swordsman, a man with a long piece of sharpened steel. We have devoted our life to the blade and that's all we need to kill someone.

Haven't decided on the specifics of that just yet. Part of me wants to be evil and watch you squirm, but I fully understand how much 1-rolls piss people off when they happen.
