The year is 2043. With the rise of megacorporations, the business world has gotten smarter, deadlier, and sneakier. Forget profit through legitimate means. If you want to get ahead, you have to lie, steal, and destroy the opposition by any means possible.

So why is your supervisor so angry with you?

“What do you mean, explosives aren't the answer?”

“Broker-R, your man not only killed the CEO of Odin Industries in broad daylight, but set blew up enough explosives for it to be viewed from Hong Kong. To make matters worse, you were watching the spectacle from a company chopper and personally shook hands with the man. Do you have any idea how much of a nightmare this is for public relations?”

You:
>Brush it off: “So it was a little loud, but hey, we acquired all of their patents and technologies.”
>Get defensive: “I destroyed one of our main competitors in under a day. You don't get results like that sitting around.”
>Quietly Accept. “Sorry, boss. Won't happen again.”
>>
Brush it off. If they want to micromanage our jobs, then they need to give more detailed instructions next time.

>Brush it off

“So it was a little loud, but hey, we acquired all of their patents and technologies. If you didn't want me to do things that way, you should have told me.”

Your supervisor shakes his head, and sighs. “Look. I can't deny your results, and I must admit, you've done more for Marud Industries then anyone. I admit, we didn't give you any directions. We pay you to do the dirty work that we avoid. But you draw too much attention to yourself, and you take massive gambles that threaten the entire company. What happens if a mission fails, or you kill the wrong people? You've made a quite few enemies with your actions, and there are plenty at this company waiting for you to fall.”

You manager looks at you with serious, tired eyes. “Just tread carefully, Broker-R. Not all enemies come from the front.”

With that, he waves his hand away, and you turn and leave for the door, heading for your workstation.

Sitting down in the chair, you torn the screen on, and look over today's work.

>One of our operatives, Calvin Kirv has turned traitor, absconding with valuable company info to Klick Tech. Find him, and silence him permanently. Last Known Location: Hong Kong, Silver Dragon Bar.

You consider your options. Tracking him would be difficult, considering how good Kirv was with technology. Klick wouldn't give him up either, if they knew what he had. Mulling over your choices, you almost miss a buzz on your commlink.

“I was set up. You need to help me. 741 Alinaki Street. Kirv.”

Scanning the message, you're unsure of what to do. It would be the most obvious trap ever, but perhaps he expects you to think that.

You decide to:
>ignore the message, and try to find Kirv through other means.
>go to the bar, and meet Kirv.
>Send an operative in to meet with Kirv.

>Go in, meet kirv, but hack security and bring two operatives with you.

Kirv sits at the bar, calmly sipping at a beer. Whether he's a turncoat or a man set up, he seems unusually calm, despite the gravity of the situation.

Waving at the bartender, he brings over a pint, and you settle in next to Kirv.

“So, do you really need my help, or do you just want jump straight to the shootout?”

“At 7:18, the cameras in the bar were hacked, and focused on me. The connection remained open for 9 minutes and 17 seconds before it closed. You came here 3 minutes later in a grey sedan, and as you entered the door, a black sedan pulled up on the other side, and two men exited, and are curently loitering by the side window and backdoor.”

“which means?”

“I should be scared, because you have the upper hand.” Kirv says calmly.

“But you don't sem to be.”

“I am. But moreso about whoever set me up.”

“tell me about it.”

Kirv nods, and starts to send you files.

“You probably knew I was in Hong Kong before this. We were losing goods as our shipments left the area, and we needed someone to investigate. Looking into it, I found a Mr. Wan was accepting bribes from the local Triad to leave warehouses understaffed with guards so they could steal valuable goods.. At first, it seemed simple. I dealt with Mr. Wan and delivered him to corpsec, and the job seemed complete. Then the bomb was dropped. The bribery and the triad was all a cover for someone to get in there, and tamper with one of our medical shipments. As of now, the shipment is enroute to a public medical center. And you need to stop it.”

As your commlink fills with the shipping transcripts and other data, a question hangs in your mind.
>>
>>27085309

“What does this have to do this you being double-crossed?”

“When I got back here and tried to contact someone, my communications were jammed. So I had to use a public terminal, and I delved into your mission feeds for anything concerning me or Hong Kong. When you got the job, I sent you the message. I have a feeling someone wants me dead before I snitch.”

You look at Kirv. His face is stoic and serious, with barely any emotion. If this information checks out, you have a serious issue on your hands. If it's false, you're going to be in trouble for messing with everything.

You decide to:

>trust him, and stop that shipment.
>Let the shipment go. He could be lying, and it wouldn't be blamed on you anyhow.
>Take him in for more questioning.

>Check it out yourself, but hold Kirv in the safehouse.

You tap your commlink.

“bring Kirv to the safehouse on the outskirts and watch him . I'm going to deal with this myself.” Turning to Kirv, you shrug apologetically.

“You understand, of course.”

He nods in response, and you rush to your car, speeding off into the night.

Looking over the files, the medicine was sent to the Wagner Public Health Institute. Driving to the address, you pull up in front of a weathered, if serviceable hospital. Walking through the lobby, you slip into the actual hospital and enter the tracking codes for the medical container.

“Excuse me sir, Are you here to visit someone? You need to check in at the front desk, and stay in the visitor areas.”

a voice interrupts your work, and you look up to see a stern nurse staring at you.

As you give out a generic response, you check your commlink again.

The container is just a few doors down this hall, but there's a keycard lock on the door.

You pull out your ID, and hand it to her.

“I'm with Marud Industries. We received some information that our supply of calcium tablets may have been compromised, so were doing inspections to check supplies of hospitals worldwide. I need you to let me into that supply room, please.”

The nurse looks at you skeptically, mentally evaluating you, then comes to a decision.

“Alright. Follow me.”

As she swipes her card, you make idle conversation, waiting for the door. It swings open, and you wave her away, thanking for her help, and enter the room.

Oh boy.

Everything here has the company label, and there's no way you can test them all for any sort of poison or tampering. As the chill of the room seeps into your body, you consider your options.

You open up your commlink, and requisition an order from Marud for new medical supplies. Walking out of the room, shaking your head, you wander around the halls until you find the nurse from before.

“Take me to your supervisor.”

She leads you up through the hospital, to a luxurious office titled “Wagner, Director of Board.”

As you step into the office, the man glares at you.

“Who are you, and what are you doing in my hospital?”

“Mr. Wagner, I'm from Marud Industries, and it ha come to our attention that we sent you some flawed goods. We need for you to dispose of them, and I've already taken the liberty of having a new shipment sent over.”

“Wha..how could you let this happen?”

'We all make mistakes, Wagner. Just be happy we caught it before you started distributing the supplies to your patients. The resulting backfire would have destroyed this hospital.”

As he starts hurling expletives at you, you simply walk out, and talk to your men.

Supplies are being transferred, and Kirv is still in custody.

You start sending orders for the shipment to be sent to the lab, but a message interrupts you.

Your supervisor.

“R, why is there a gaping hole where your budget should be, followed by a bill for a hospital's worth of medical supplies?”

You:
>Play dumb. “I don't know anything about that. How weird.”
>Be honest. “Supplies were tampered with, and I had to order new ones.”
>Mislead. “this is all part of one of my operations, boss. Don't worry, it'll definitely succeed.”

You boss groans. “I swear....we are going to talk about this tomorrow. I've already heard enough for one night.”

As he ends the call, one of your men waves you over.

“got everything taken care of. What do you want us to do now?”

“Take it over to the labs. We need to run some tests.” Entering the cabin of the truck, you drive over to the labs, and get people working on analysis. As you sit in the corner, watching the scientists work their magic with multiple machines and arcane terminology, you feel a tense knot grow in your stomach.

Finally, a scientist strides over.

“I don't know where you got this stuff, but it's definitely been tampered with. Nasty stuff too. It's all been injected with a substance will build up in the body over several months, before causing it to suffer an agonizing death.”

a sigh of relief exits your body, and taking the results, you flip through them quickly. Not a single item was left untouched.

Who would do such a thing? And why?

The next day, you walk into your boss's office.

“Care to explain?”

“Yes.”

You start from the beginning, from when you left his office. As your story continues, his face grows darker and darker. As you finish, he clasps his hands together and looks at you contemplatively.

“So what you're saying is, we have someone out there willing to commit mass murder and delay it? And they might be someone from this very company?”

“Yes, sir.”

He shakes his head and stands up from his desk. Pacing around his room, his seems deep in thought.

“Whoever it is, they'll know who stopped them. That'll be you, R. Funny. You take care of a situation in a low-key manner, and it just might be your downfall. So much for my advice, right?” He smiles wearily, and looks out to the workfloor."

“Whoever he or she is, they are somewhere on this floor. Maybe you could goad them out somehow. Then again, you may want to leave town.”

“What are you going to do?”

You can't let it end here. You're here for the company, and you want those paychecks to keep flowing.

“I'll bait him out, boss.”

“Well, contact me at my secondary commcode when you think you've got someone, of if you need any assistance.” As he hands you a number, you shake his hand.

“Thanks, boss.”

“Call me Shu.”

As he waves you out, you step onto the floor. Someone here is the rat. It might be your boss. How can you bait them out?

You decide to wait.

If anyone is guilty, they'll know it was you, and would want to kill you immediately, right? You do nothing, but sleep at night with a gun under the pillow and one eye open.

Nothing. You decide to start droping subtle hints in conversations about your involvement, talk about medicine from Hong Kong, and watch for reactions.

Two weeks go by, and absolutely no bites.

You decide to go bigger. You talk about how your latest work earned you a bonus, and drinks are on you tonight. You talk about it in the open, but leave the part out about it being someone from the company.

Your hefty spending and braggart attitude is awarded by one thing.

>Get Operatives to protect us, including Kirv.

For some reason, you decide to not let Shu know about the incident. Instead, you secretly organize a group of operatives to watch over you at all times. As you continue with your work, you try and get more information from this note leaver.

But nothing. The trail runs dead. The note was typed, could have come from any of the workstations, and nothing else has turned up.

You go home like normal, show up to work like normal, and don't tell Shu anything.

One night, right as you're about to go asleep, your commlink buzzes. You groan, and move to pick it up...

And a bullet whizzes through where you head would have been a second ago.

Diving out of bed, you grab your commlink and answer it.

“Who the hell is this?”

“It's Kirv. You need to get out of the room, now. Exit through the door-”

another bullet screams through the air, narrowly missing you, and you drop to the ground.

“This guy's got me pinned, Kirv! I pop my head out and I might as well kiss my brain goodbye.”

“I know. Once you run, the sniper readjust his aim, and I will take him out then. Exit through the third door on you pass on your left once you leave the room.”

“When?”

“Now.”

Perhaps motivated by both fear and adrenaline, you run for it, hearing a single gunshot outside. Turning into the hall, you dash down, throwing yourself into the door Kirv mentioned. The apartment is empty.

“Alright, what now?”

“Jump out the window.”

“You're kidding, right? This is the 50th floor.”

“No.”
>>
>>27087458

You mutter a few choice words under your breath, and turn to the window. Outside, you can see the city lights glittering in the dark, and other towers rising to the sky.

This is absolutely crazy. Ridiculously crazy.

So then why are you hurling yourself into the window, shattering it into a million pieces?

For a second you're flying.

Then gravity takes over and you feel your belly drop as you fall-only to hit something, hard.

Groaning in pain, you find yourself on a small platform held in place by two robots.

“Kirv, what the hell is this?”

'Window-cleaning robots holding a platform. They were set to hold the board the instant you fell.”

“You weren't worried they would fall off?”

'they cling to the wall with the strength of 7200 lbs. Your impact would not have dislodged them.”

"Why didn't you tell me this beforehand?"

"Because you would have hesitated even more."

“What now?”

“You tell me what to do with the sniper.”

As you sit on that platform, 50 stories in the air, you consider your choices.

>Kill him. He may have a tracking device or a bomb embedded in him, and you don't want to go anywhere near that.
>Capture him. You can always question him, and you don't have enough answers.

“Capture him. We need answers.”

“Very well.”

You hear a thump on the other side of the call, and Kirv speaks again. “Done. When you leave, enter the trunk of the grey sedan on the 10th floor parking lot.”

the robots slowly lift you up to the window, and you step off, and follow Kirv's orders.

Lying in the back of the trunk, all you can hear is people getting to the car and driving off into the city. It goes on for about half an hour, and you have nothing but a bottle of water and some cheese sticks for company in the back.

Finally the car stops, and the trunk is opened. Stepping out, you see Kirv and a few other men standing about, staring an an unconscious body in a chair.

“Whenever you're ready.” He says, handing you a bucket of water.

“time for some answers.” You reply, and you drench the man with cold water. As he sputters awake, Kirv steps up.

“Who are you working for?”

The man looks away, and Kirv gestures to another, who brings forward some wicked-looking implements.

As Kirv hands hover over the tools, you see the captive start getting nervous.

Then Kirv picks up a syringe.

“You probably have seen this before, haven't you? I don't need to torture you endlessly. I just inject you with this, and you start talking. Only one problem. I like mixing my own serums, and I haven't quite figured out a truth serum. All my previous attempts usually leave a man paralyzed from the neck down, but maybe you'll be lucky.” As he moves the needle towards the man's neck, the captive yells out.

“I'll talk, dammit! Marud Industries, and I was paid in credits to kill that man over there.”

“A name, please.” Kirv says.

“I don't know! Honest! All I received was payment and a message sent from a public terminal!”

“Details. All of them.”

“I can't tell you anything about them! I just got a text message, and a dead drop containing the cash!”

“Where?”

“A locker at central station! Locker 51! Key is in my pocket!”

A single clue. Your only clue.

But it might be enough to start unraveling this puzzle.

“Let's go. Kirv. With me. The rest of you, watch him.”

'”One thing first, R.” Kirv says, grabbing your shoulder.

“What?”

“You're still in pajamas.”

He's right.

One change of clothes later, you find yourself in Central Station. It's filled with people, and enough cameras to film a movie with.
As Kirv finds the lockers, you look around. There's too many people here to see if anyone's a threat. It doesn't seem anyone is following you, but still.

Locker 51 sits in front of you. You look for fingerprints, but there doesn't seem to be any. You grasp the key tightly in your pocket, and use to open up the locker.

Empty.

You sigh in disappointment, and look back at Kirv, who shrugs.

Another dead end.

Then your commlink buzzes.

“Need help urgently. Meet at Central Station under the clock. Soon as you can. Shu.”

from the lockers, you have a perfect vantage point to the central clock. Looking underneath, you can see Shu leaning against the wall, looking around.

You decide to:

You tell Kirv to stay behind, while you see what Shu wants. Just in case, you contact the team, and they're all alive. You start to head to Shu....

But something tells you to wait for a bit.

Instead of cutting through the crowd, you decide to circle a bit, to try and see if anything is going on.

You do so for a seven minutes, but nothing happens.

You decide to go for it.

Walking over, you manage to catch Shu's eye, and wave.

He waves back-and a gunshot goes off, causing red mist to spurt from his chest.

As the crowd screams in terror, you rush over to Shu, and pull him behind a stand.

“Shu, Stay with me! What did you need me for?”

As he coughs blood, his hand snakes into his coat pocket and he pulls out a small package.

“These...are ...bond slips...untraceable.... take them...to sell...and escape the city....”

You shake Shu.

“Goddamnit Shu, I can't leave! Who did this to us? We have to stop them before it's too late!”

Shu's blood pools out on the floor, and his head slips back. No words come from his mouth, but he looks down, and you see his hands draw a phrase.

“Wan's Brother”

Wan? The man who was in charge of Hong Kong security for Marud Industries? His brother would be...hmm. You mentally trace the chain of command, and only one other Wan appears. Lano Wan, director of operations for Marud Industries, head of the brokers.

Shu's boss.

A commlink message interrupts your thoughts.

“We need to go now. Escape the city. ”

It's Kirv.

You:

>Disagree. “I know who's behind this all. We need to end this.”

“No. We need to get out of here, get to the company, and kill Lano before he gets to us.”

“Very well. Please close your eyes. When you hear an explosion, move from the desk back to the lokcers.”

You do as he says, running when you hear the flashbang go off. As you slide into cover, you watch as Kirv effortlessly picks off opponents with his pistol.

“What now?”

“You need to get into the subway.”

“You mean we, right?”

“No.”

You shake your head, and Kirv continues.

'When I run out of cover, you go for the subway. Get to an emergency door, and get ready to jump out when I tell you to. Now.”

Kirv spins out of cover and runs, pistol blazing as he advances across to main hall.

You take your opportunity and bolt towards the subway, diving for the doors right as they close.

Before you can catch your breath, however, you see a man shoot out one of the windows and dive in. He rolls to his feet, his gun at the ready.

You:

Taking a deep breath, you stand up, and assume a fighting stance. “Let's settle this like men.”

the man shrugs, holsters his pistol and does likewise.

You take the chance to bolt for the door faster than a bat out of hell.

Slamming the door behind you, you run down the train, head lowered to avoid the bullets whizzing by. You almost miss the emergency doors by the toilet as you do so, and turning back, you see the man has almost caught up.

He opens the door...

and you get a message from Kirv.

“Now.”

Slamming down the emergency lever, you push the door out and tumble to the ground, skidding and rolling as inertia takes over. You enjoy the look on the man's face as the train whisks him away.

“Now what?”

“30 feet behind you, there should be a service tunnel. Follow it to an exit, and regroup at the warehouse where the captive is.”

following his instructions, you exit out a damp, steaming service tunnel into the halls of another station. Looking at a map of the city, you walk back through the bustle of the city, finding your way back to the safehouse.
>>
>>27089319

What awaits you is not a pretty sight.

Bodies are strewn everywhere, with traces of a gunfight in the air. Scrambling for a first aid kit, you run to your men.

As you try to heal what you can, you ask questions.

'What happened?”

“damn bastard....had a tracking chip. Men showed up, and we got them...but...its a mess.”

An hour passes, and finally Kirv pulls up.

You explain to him what happened and he shakes his head. He walks around a bit, examining the wounds of both sides.

“Whoever they were, it looks like they were shooting to wound. Probably didn't want to kill your men, just capture them. But even without any of them dead, none seem to be in any condition to fight. If you're going to take down Lano, you have exactly two people to do so. You, and me.”

“How are you going to do it?”

You think about your options.

>Stealthy-Sneak in, kill Lano, and get out. Present evidence to higher-ups later.

Lano's brother took bribes. When Kirv found out the actual reason why, Lano likely used his powers as director to have him designated him as a traitor to be killed. He would have been hoping no one would trust him, and the tampered medical supplies get released to the public.

But why?

You're missing the motive. And there's only one person to get it from.

Lano.

“Kirv. I need anything and everything related to Wan being bribed. Were going to release this information to the public, and get the last piece from Lano, and go on a vacation with the bonds Shu gave us.”

“I'll take care of transportation. Do you want to get out of this city by boat, plane, or vehicle, and what's our final destination?”

“Take this, and buy me the most luxurious private plane you can find and some nice place out inn the Caribbean.”

Kirv nods.

“Contact me when you're ready.”

As he turns away, you look at the files, and starting sending them out through your contacts.

It doesn't take long before the informations hits the media, and there, it becomes an instant sensation. Within hours, every site is covering it and beginning investigations, and you sit back and wath as Lano Wan is probed. Sooner or later, you'll have the reason why.

And Lano?

Well, he'll be sitting in a prison cell while you enjoy glassy seas and sandy bays.

After a few days, you decide it might be time to leave.

You message Kirv, and he shoots back an address and a time. Packing what meager belongings you have, you set out to the address.

You arrive at another skyscraper, and you ride the elevator up, wondering what the future has in store for you.
>>
>>27089972

When the doors ding open, you find yourself on a empty floor with nothing but stuff covered with sheets and boxes.

Your footstep echo as you walk around, and you decide to message Kirv again.

“Kirv? What now?” as you wait for a reply, you start to get nervous.

“R! You need to g-” His voice sounds only to be interrupted by gunfire.

You swear, and look around. Nothing is coming at you yet...wait.

Across way, you can see someone in another tower.

Is that Lano? What is he doing? Drawing closer, you see he's doing some sort of interview...

then you notice the cloth next to you moving.

Before you can do anything, a gunshot rings out underneath, and you watch as the windows shatter, glass falls... and Lano drop dead across the way.

You:

>Book it out of there. Everything's gone south.

You need to get out of here, but how?

You look at the sheet where the gunshot came from, and pull it off.

Underneath is some contraption with a gun on it. Some sort of..remote firer?

You turn to the rest of the area and start pulling of sheets.

Some sort of chemical lab setup, boxes of Marud medical supplies, explosives...what the hell is all of this?

A message comes through to you, and its a face you never thought you would see.

“Shu! Shu, you're alive! Listen, I need some help!”

“What are you talking about, R?”

“I was trying to get out of the city. When I met at the place Kirv told me to, this rifle shot Lano, who was just across the way. I think someone is trying to set me up.”

“R, I order you to turn yourself into the authorities immediately.”

What?

“We have evidence that you conspired with Lano Wan and his brother to poison the medical supplies of Marud Industries, and use the fallout to exploit the market, buying bonds from oppostion at low and selling them at high prices once investment switched over after the news hit the market. Furthermore, camera evidence has placed you as the man who fired the gun at Lano.”

“that's not what happened! You know this! I told you! If I wanted to take atvantage of it, why did I make the hospital switch out supplies?”

“Most likely your conscience acted. So you used your pay to buy new supplies, but saved the information about the tampered once to release later and still profit.”

“How?”
“You already know this, but check your bank account.”

You do what he says, and find seven zeroes have been added to your balance.

“do not resist arrest, R. The corpsec have orders to shoot noncompliant targets.”

In your head, the pieces fall together.

You need to get out of here, now. dashing for the elevator, you hammer the ground floor button as fast as you can, consequences be damned. Finally the doors close, and you begin our ascent down, the tinny music a sharp contrast to the situation at hand.

Then the music-and the elevator-brake sharply, leaving you alone in the dark. Cursing your luck, you pop open the door in the ceiling, and find yourself in a dark elevator shaft. Working your way up the one of the doors, you balance precariously, working your fingers into the doorway, and prying it open.

Slipping through the gap, you find yourself on a floor filled with people milling about in the dark. Taking your brief moment of safety, you message Kirv again.

He spits back a brief message.

“Hide in the crowd. They still think you are in the elevator.”

looking around, you can see people using their commlinks as lights, working their way to the ground floor. Going with the flow, you descend into the lobby, where you see guards at all the doors, checking faces.

Messaging Kirv for help, he sends back another message.

“Distraction at the south side in 10 seconds. Rush out that way as well.”

10 seconds pass, and grenades appear from nowhere, sending coloured smoke through the south door. As the crowd there screams, you push through, guards too concerned with any threat to focus on handling the crowd.

Stumbling and coughing through the smoke, you feel a hand grab you, and shove you roughly into a space, followed by doors slamming.

You find yourself in the back of a delivery truck, surrounded by small parcels.

“Wait here.” As your commlink recieves the message, you sit and wait, adrenaline and fear turning seconds into hours, and minutes into days.
>>
>>27090952
Finally, you hear the truck start up and drive away, and you breath a sweet breath of satisfaction.

Where will you go now?

What will you do now?

Your back is against a wall, and Shu definitely has the upper hand. You're a criminal all throughout the city, perhaps even the world.

As the truck slowly grinds to a halt, and the back opens up, you see Kirv.

Wounded, battered, but alive.

“I had some difficulty. But fortunately, we made it out in one piece.”

“Thanks.”

“So, you're a hunted man now. What did you want to do from here?”

To run would only lead to a bad end.

You know that.

So you must fight.

>”Let's do this quickly and cleanly. Get Shu, and prove the evidence against us to be false.”

>>
>>27091162
“We need to get at Shu, but we're unequipped to go in there guns blazing. Kirv, we need to go in steathily. Any ideas?”

Kirv thinks for a moment.

“We probably can't grab him at his workplace. He'll be too well guarded for that. That goes for home, as well. With you on the loose, he'll most likely avoid public places.”

he looks at you and you consider what he says. “That means...we have to grab him while he's moving, right?”

Kirv nods.

“But in order to do that, we need a distraction, especially if we want to do so without drawing any attention. He'll likely have one or two escorts with him, following close behind. We need to fool them into thinking nothing's wrong.”

“from what I'm looking at, we can either cause a distraction, work in the momentary blindspots when they turn corners, or try and replace his entire cast of guards with our own.”

>Work in Blind Spot.

“Done.” Kirv pulls up a map, and together, the two of you run through the schedule. The longest blind spot is when Shu goes through 47th and Broadmoor, due to the constantly intersecting traffic. You have exactly 5 seconds to work in, and in that time, you need to secure the vehicle, eliminate the opposition inside, and ensure Shu doesn't contact his guards in that time. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to take advantage of those in the blind spot except for roofs, and Shu doesn't have the budget for that much guards.

“And what do we do once we have him?” Kriv asks.

“I'll figure it out from there.” You reply. “Is this all we have to use?” You eye passes over the table holding all the equipment Kirv could scrounge.

A single signal jammer, a stungun, three flashbangs, a single knockout gas grenade, a gasmask, and two handguns carrying 17 rounds with a spare magazine between the two.

“Yes. While the city is big enough we can move through crowds, markets are restricted enough that acquiring any more goods could be problematic.”

You nod at his logic, then Kirv speaks again.

“one more thing. In the last situation, my plans went awry. I feel that I can no longer adequately assess the situation. I need you to direct me, R, instead of the other way around.”

Kirv's asking you to plan, but at the same time, you feel his lack of confidence may be misplaced. Still, it does have some reasoning behind it.

You:
>Take over planning. [What do you intend to do? Use which items when? Please list what you intend to do.]

Stop them with a flashbang/signal jammer, use the stungun on Shu while Kirv takes the opposition down - help him out once you took care of Shu, well that's a matter of seconds anyway-, then cover our retreat with a flashbang/gas and gasmask. I don't know shit about guns and commandos, so that might be stupid.

Kirv thinks about the problem for a bit.

“Alright, here's what we'll do....”

the next day, you find yourself on the corner of 47th and Broadmoor, nervous and tense. Kirv drilled your actions into you. Now, you're just waiting. As your stomah flips and flies like a butterfly, you go over the actions.

When the light turns green, and the car turns, you have 5 seconds left. At that point the two of you should be in position in the traffic itself.

Activate the signal jammer to block communications.

4 seconds left.

Driver will pull out a gun. You taser him and unlock the doors.

3 seconds left.

Kirv opens the passenger side and cracks the second guard's nck.

2 seconds left.

You enter the car. Kirv settles in on the man's body.

1 second left.

Deactivate jammer, roll up windows.

0 seconds left.

as you drive away, Shu laughs.

"You idiot. I have two guards following me! How did you plan to deal with them?"

"Like this."

Kirv hands you two grenades, and you toss them out the window. Shu's grin turns to a look of surprise, as the gas grenade and flashbang go off, blinding a truck driver who serves and crashes, blocking off the road behind you.

Shu groans. "Great. You pay a fortune for protection, and they get stopped by two idiots wielding explosives."

"I told you before. Explosives are always the answer."

"So what are you going to do to me now?" She asks.

You say:

>“Take you back home, and deal with you there.”

“There's just one thing you forgot about, R.”

“What?”

“It's not just my snipers who have tracking chips.”

before you can speak, the car is rammed from the side. As the car spins, you struggle with the wheel, and manage to gain traction.

Gunning forward, you look behind in the mirror.

One other car.

You can do this.

“Kirv, see if you can line up a shot. And Shu...”

“Yes?”

As he turns to look at you, you fire the taser right at his chest.

“I hate you.”

with Shu slumped over, you focus on drving. With rush hour, the entire city is packed. The only way through the road is quick turns and quicker adjustments.

“R, can you drift?” Kriv's question breaks your concentration.

“What?”

“Do it. I need steady movement, and your constant adjustments left and right throw off my aim.”

You grit your teeth, and look ahead. You've got a wide turn up ahead.

“okay, going for it!”

You throw the wheel hard to the left, and the car slides. Kirv lean out the window and taps the trigger three times.

Three perfectly aimed shots.

Unfortunately, the car won't go down that easily. As the bullets bounce of the windshield and grille, he looks at you and shrugs.

“We need to throw them off some other way.”

You look around, and inspiration hits.

Several times.

You decide on:

>“The ferry! It's leaving son, and if we time it right, they won't be able to follow!”

>“Central Mall! If we pull into the lot, we could slip away into the crowd!”

You pound on accelerator, and it shoots forward. As the car behind you gives chase, you look ahead. The ferry ramp is going up, and you press harder. Blowing through the tollbooth, you hit the ramp and the flies, landing heavily. As the ramp moves up, you see the car giving chase brake unsuccessfully, falling into the water.

You and Kirv turn to Shu.

“we need to deal with that tracking chip.” He says.

“Got that signal jammer?” You ask. Kirv hands it over, and you turn it on, stowing it in Shu's pocket.

“Now, to get out of here.”

Getting out of the car, you leave the guards behind, and wake Shu.

“You say anything, and I shoot you where the sun don't shine. Now follow us, and don't say a word.”

You walk in front, with Kirv behind to keep an eye on Shu. As the people around complain about lost signals, you tlk out loud.

“Why? Kirv, don't shoot him if he responds.”

He nods, and Shu starts to talk.

“Because you were threatening my job security.”

“What?”

“You were being exceptional, and I just can't have one of my subordinates showing me up. Sooner or later, you would become a real threat, so I decided to take care of you now. So I set this all up. The medicine, the fake shooting in Central Station and the attack on your team. You and my boss were supposed to go down, and guess who would replace him? Me, the one who brings you in.”

“Well, looks like you didn't plan hard enough.”

“Oh really? Think about how you escaped, and how you made it here. Who helped you escape? Who helped you get me? I've been playing this game a lot longer than you have, R. ”
>>
>>27093314

“Nice try, pal.” Kirv says, shoving Shu, who simply laughs.

“Yes, keep up the act! You know when to betray R.”

“So, what now? We've got a confession from him.” Kirv says. “One of the cameras in this area should have been close enough to pick up the audio, so we have a record on hand, plus me as a witness.”

You think about things.

It's rather convenient how everything tied up. Could you trust Kirv, though? That would determine your next course of action.

>Trust him. Call the authorities, and bring new light on the case.

You decide to trust him for the time being. Letting him hold Shu, you walk to a public terminal out of range of the signal jammer and place a call into Marud's Corpsec.

“I have some new information about this tampered medicine case with Marud Industries. Where can I meet with you in safety?”

“An anonymous caller? What do you have that is so important ou need us to arrange a meeting place?”

“the culprit and the confession.”

“Alright. Meet here.” the officer you talk to sends over an address, and you walk back to Kirv and explain whats happening.

He grimaces.
“Judging by our current time, the jammer will run out of power only a few minutes after we arrive, and that's if we rush. We'll have no time to check it out beforehand. But you're sure...”

“I'm sure. Like you said, our time is running out. This is our best shot, and I say we go for it.” you take in the moment, and look at Shu.

“whatever you got up your sleeve, you better do it now. Because once we hit that office, you can say goodbye to that office suite.”

Shu laughs.

“Oh, I do. Just you wait.”
>>
>>27094247
Your comeback is cut off by the ferry ludspeakers, announcing that it has docked. Grabbing Shu by the arm, you tug him down the ramps, and the the three of you quickly make your way over to Marud's Corpsec office.

What greets you is a line of officer with guns at the ready, and what looks like their chief up front.

“You don't take any chances.” You observe.

The chief nods. “You were one of the suspected culprits, and voice recognition picked it up immediately.” He looks at Shu.

“I'm assuming this is the real culprit?”

You nod.

“Come with me.” the security chief says, and the three of you follow. He leads you into the clean, tidy office, and opens the door to the interrogation room. As you sit down inside, he looks at you with piercing eyes.

“Tell me everything.” And you do, starting from th lecture Shu gave you in his ofice, up to the confession.

“So, that's....” Kirv's commlink starts beeping, interrupting the chief, and he looks at it.

“What's that supposed to mean?' he asks.

“Time's up.” Kirv replies.

“Chief, you ned to get ready. Shu's got men under his command, and they're paid to make sure he escapes.

He swears momentarily.

“I need to get out there. But you three...”
>>
>>27094260
“We can help-” before you can finish your statement, he shakes his head.

“No, stay here. I'll lock the door. Can't have suspects running around my offices.”

Before you can say anything else, he runs outside and swipes his card, locking you inside.

“Great.” You mutter.

“Hold on, I hear something.” Kirv says. You listen too. Yelling...then gunfire.

“They're here. Shit.”

You try the door, but it's definitely locked. As the sounds get closer, you crane your neck for any visual sign-and see operatives running around, securing the building. One of them approaches the door, and you gesture at Kirv. He nos, and both of you move to the sides of the room, out of his vision. The operative tries the door, then shoots the lock open. As he steps in, Kirv grabs him, and throws him to the ground, wrapping his arm around the operative's neck. He struggles, then then man finally lands still.

Kirv looks at you.

“We need to escape. How do you want to do this?”

>Kirv takes the man's rifle and takes care of heavy shooting, while you take Shu and bolt for it.

“Kirv, take his rifle. Let's move.”

“I suggest moving upwards. Shu's men likely have to door covered, and there will be pockets of resistance along the way.” As Kirv shoulders the rifle, you grab the pistol and rack the slide.

“Alright. When?”

“Now.”

Kirv slams open the door, and the two of you delve into the firefight. As shots ring out and bullets fly, the two of you have only one objective.

Survive.

As Kirv holds and draws attention, firing quick, accurate bursts from the assault rifle, you move behind him, advancing to the next doorway. There, you fire off quick shots to make the enemy take cover, allowing Kirv to take care of them as the pop their heads up. Together, the two of you advance quickly through the station, Shu in tow.

Moving for the stairs, lead barely missing your face forces you to tumble to the ground, dragging Shu with you. Blindly firing with your pistol, Kirv slides in next to you.

“Let me borrow Shu.”

releasing Shu, Kirv quickly grabs him, and forces him to stand. The bullets stop, momentarily.

That's all Kirv needs. His assault rifle rings out, making bodies drop, and he hands Shu back to you. You grab him, and rush for the stairs. Up you go, a spiraling ascent to the top. Your lungs are aching, and not even the adrenaline rush can stop the fear in your heart. When you see troops descend downwards, Kirv shoots open a door, and you follow him across, gunfire ringing across the office floor. He slams intoo the door, but it stays locked.
>>
>>27095264

Cursing, he turns around and shoots at the operatives rushing in.

“R, get the door!” You aim your pistol, but before you can fire, the door is kicked in. Another operative stands in front of you, and as you fire, they bounce off his body armor. He trains his rifle on you, and behind you, you can hear the gunfire stop.

Between a crowd and a single gunman, the two of you find yourselves trapped.

They slowly advance, and you can see Shu grin.

“I told you. Release me, and I'll let you live in the most miserable jail I can find.”

“Screw that.” You grip the pistol tightly and shove it against Shu's head.

“Do it.” Kirv's voice speaks slowly, and you turn around.

His rifle in trained on you, and the look in his eyes is cold and calculating.

“So...you were working with Shu all along.” You say.

“No, actually.” Kirv replies. “I just figured my chances of survival are better this way.”

“That's it?” You ask. “That's why you're siding with him?”

'Do you remember what I said, R? Whenever I plan something, it goes off without a hitch. Whenever something unexpected happens, I react flawlessly. That's why I do the planning, and why I didn't even consider your opinion. And that's why, right now I know that if you rushed towards that sole guard and tried to escape, it would be a very, very bad idea.”

kill shu, we're going down anyway

The inconsistencies in Kirv's words, the lies he told, and your trust in him led you to believe he took one of the riskiest gambits of his life.

And you were right.

When he said 'now', you rushed at the guard, and Kirv's rifle opened fire. Barrelling him over, the two of you rushed for the roof. Kicking open the last door, you find yourselves in a wide open space, with no cover to speak of and no rooftop to jump to.

This is it.

A small group of operatives barrelled through the door, rifles trained. As they advanced, Kirv's rifle rang dry and he cursed, pulling out his pistol and firing uselessly. They slowly advance, and the two of you found yourself pressed up the very edge, your only hope of living being the man you held hostage.

“Let me go!” shu roars, but you grasp your lifeline closely.

“Not a goddamn chance!” You mutter, forcing your pistol against his head.

“Do it! I'll let you go free, I swear!” He says.

Your response is to hold Shu to the edge of the building, and start yelling.

>”Hope you enjoy not getting paid!” Drop Shu.
>”Kick your rifles over the edge, and then we'll talk.” Hold Shu for negotiations

>Assuming we still have the ammo for that.
Might wanna check before we start unloading, he might be our only key out of the building. We know any VTOL pilots available for hot pickup?
>>
>>27095955
Hey real quick- I ended up moving when I first backed the kickstarter. Please tell me that you'll doublecheck what addresses people are before you start sending stuff.
>>
>>Yeah I ask for addresses right before things ship, but that's still a ways off for the physical stuff.
>>
>>27096245
Okay, just double checking.

My freaking shadowrun stuff got jacked because of them sending it to my old address. I'm still mad.

>”Kick your rifles over the edge, and then we'll talk.” Hold Shu for negotiations
Then drop him and kill everyone.

The operatives do what you say, and Shu smiles. “See, I told you I would have the upper ha-”

You shove Shu, and turn away as he falls. As the men scramble for their pistols, you toss Kirv the other flashbang, and throw them at the operatives. Shielding yourself from the blast, you launch yourself in a dropkick as Kirv whirls into combat, lashing out with hands and feet. Knocking one of them to the ground, you roll to your feet as your opponent picks himself up. You throw a hard left into his torso, only to wince as your fist hits armor. He proceeds to rush you, knocking you into the ground, pounding his fists into your face. Struggling, you manage to throw him off, and scramble to your feet.

A pistol lies in between you two, and for a moment, the two of you pause.

Then you run for the pistol. It's a dead heat, and you dive for it. Your hands meet, and you wrench it out of his hands, and unload into his armor at point blank. The pistol clicks several times before you realise it's empty, and you quickly scramble up, ready for a fight.

But the only thing you see is Kirv shaking his hand out, standing over a pile of bodies.

“Nice work.” You say, and he shrugs.

"You too."

At that moment, the door bursts open, and you both turn to see the security chief leading the remnants of his force. “WE'RE GOING TO GET YOU BAST........Where's everyone?” his yell dies as he sees the two of you standing alone, and then Kirv speaks.

“You're late to the party, chief. We took care of everyone.”

“Where's Shu?”

You point over the ledge, and the chief looks at his dead body and winces.

“So, what happens now that the culprit is dead?”

The security chief looks at you and frowns. 'Well, first off, sanitiation is going to clean that asshole from my sidewalk. Then, somebody's going to give me a goddamn raise.”

“And what happens to me in the meantime?”

“Nothing. This building does have extraterritoriality, so as far as laws go, you get to go off scot-free. But I swear, if you bring in another Shu, I'll.....Hold on.”

The Chief touches his earpiece, and listens to someone talking on the other side.

“A call's coming in for you.” The chief hands you his commlink, and you hold it up.

A face appears. The CEO of Marud Industries.
Mentally cringing, you speak carefully.

“This is Broker-R. You wanted to speak with me?”

“Yes. Do you know how much trouble you make for this corporation?”

You start to speak, but he interrupts you.

“Not only have you given away biotechnology to a boxer, but you've used the robotics team to create exploding arms for some jerk with a personal vendetta, and now, I've got a supervisor missing, a dead director of operations and a stock that just dropped by 50%.”

He pauses, waiting for a response, and you:

>Apologize. “Sorry, sir. Won't happen again.”
>Argue. “Are you kidding me? This is the second time i've saved this company, and this is how you repay me?”
>Other.

>Security chief
>Getting a raise for massive firefights on the roof and dead bodies dropped in front of bitizens.

Assuming we didnt already short the stock before starting this rampage, I guess we'll just have to pitch our plan how to leak (parts of) this story, get it made into a blockbuster slip, and fill it full of overt and subtle product placement to launch our new line of exploding arms and boxer biotech.
>>

>Apologize. “Sorry, sir. Won't happen again, unless this company needs saving again."

Be a smart ass, and say something about the mission being accomplished.i want this all to be a mission and you were able to trick Kirv

“I'm sorry, sir. I'd like to-”

“Apologize? Don't. Pack your desk.”

You sigh wearily. “Yes, sir.”

“Because I need a new Director of Operations, and right now, you're the closest goddamn thing I got. Move into your new office tomorrow, and do what it takes to boost our stock back to normal.”

“Yes, sir! How about....” You begin detailing your plans to the CEO, and he pauses, then responds.

“Make it so. And quickly. I'm sick of dealing with the board.”

With that, the CEO hangs up, and you give the commlink back to the chief. Looking around, you see Kirv sitting on the building edge. You settle in next to him, and stare out across the city.

“Is it always like this with you?” Kirv asks.

You think about your past activities, and decide on a shrug. “Usually, I'm not in the heat of things.”

“You handle yourself pretty good.”

“Thanks.”

“Your aim and combat skills could be better, though.”

“Thanks.” You reply sarcastically.

“Well-” He picks himself up, and starts walking toward the exit. “This job is on the house. Next time you need my help though, you better pay well.”

you wave him off, but decide to stay for a while, staring across the city.

“Mission accomplished.” You say to no one in particular.

Finally, you pick yourself up, and head back.

It's been a long day.

And tomorrow, you've got lots of work to do.

Well, that's it. How'd everybody like it? Criticism? Questions? tell me, and I'll answer to the best of my abilities. And John, how goes working on Net Gain? you haven't updated in a while, so I was a bit worried.

This story sounds familiar for some reason and yet i can't put my finger on it.was it all planned from the beginning?
>>
>>27097303
I liked it, pretty good as always.
>>
>>27097306
Not quite. the general plot was there, but specific events, such as if Kirv was telling the truth or not, weren't decided until much later in the quest. as for whether it's familiar or not, I didn't base it off anything specific but the general idea of someone close being the traitor is a fairly common story
>>
>>27097303
What will happen if Shu was actually set free?
>>
>>27097399
Thanks! and thank you for participating!
>>27097455
If had been let go, most likely, I would have made him try to kill you and it would have turned into desperate gunfight in the alley.

Yeah it's been a set of shit slowing things down. the main thing was a huge rewrite of missions code, since I was still running off the very first framework I put in place, which took a long while but opens up al lot more of the features I can start implementing. That, plus a week family vacation to Canada, plus this past slow week, has been rocky. the next update should be any day now but the actual content is still a bit light...
Next build will have more though, since it'll be more features than framework.
>>
>>27097739
Excellent! Not the slowing down, but an update coming soon and this rework opening things up sounds very promising!

Asynchronous missions! The previous stuff was all linear, but now you can have operatives in a cell doing different plots in different parts of the world simultaneously.
For example, if you get intel on a rival cell, setting up multiple simultaneous assassinations on the members!
>>
>>27097929
(Well, once that gets the UI stuff built in to allow it)
>>
>>27097929
>>27097941
very nice!

Well, it's getting late where I am, so good luck, John, and thanks everyone for playing!
>>
>>27097929
That button the broker's pushing looks for all the world like a nipple on a flat boob.

I mean, if it was bright blue or something it'd be better, but right now it's just... flesh-colored.
>>
>>27098249
I think it's supposed to be a trackball.
>>
>>27098339
So... a clit instead of a nipple. Got it.

>implying I'm not just being an asshole
