After a century of servitude, Space Marine realizes he is hollow, he has nothing. He knows there are enemies of the Empire, he knows his oaths, but he also realizes there will always be enemies, Ruinous powers, greenskins and alike while his time is, after all, limited.

He wants a normal life with a normal woman on some simple agri-world. He wants some children to remain after he is gone.

What happens, /tg/?

Older fluff said they could and it has never been retconned as far as I know

No he doesn't. Because this:

>He knows there are enemies of the Empire, he knows his oaths, and he also realizes there will always be enemies

Really, the only thing that'll pull a Spess Muhreen away from the Chatper is Chaos (or the Inquisition). Chaos is the perfect outlet for his fanatical devotion and crazy, genetically-enhanced drive to kill things. But living on a FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARM? Please.
>>
>>27021467
Nah, I don't agree. They already have a legacy, their deeds and the passing on of their gene-seed and wargear. They've already got a family, and one that will remember them for far longer than some dirt farmers.

Psycho indoctrination isn't perfect, they have shown that before

Maybe it faded, maybe it didn't take properly in the first place

The main thing is the 40k universe is big enough that near anything can happen, not that a marine would be allowed to retire and live out his days on a farm they would probably just tear his gene seed out and send him on a suicide mission or something but it doesn't stop the possibility of him wanting the quiet end

"Because it is a failure...to admit that I feel I have no more strength to give."

"An agri-world."
"Population?"
"A mere four billion."
"Four billion...space marines, such as you and I?"
"No. Four billion normal people. Citizens of the Imperium."
"Why?"
"...I fail to follow you, chaplain."
"Why are there four billion people down there, brother? Why not three, or one, or even less?"
"Because...because we intervened."
"We did. By our hand was a world saved. By our actions, Four billion live today that would not have without our strength."
>lifts crozius and gestures
"Look out there at the stars, brother. They are beautiful, are they not? And yet they conceal such dark things."
"The enemies of humanity."
"Yes. Yes, brother, it is true that there shall always be enemies. There shall always be xenos and traitors who seek to bring down the whole of humanity. And they would be successful, were it not for one thing."
"The Astartes."
"The Astartes...and all those who would stand with us. We, the soldiers, the defenders of humanity, we form a wall that holds the weak and the innocent apart from that which would destroy them. We are bricks, if you will, and mortar. One brick, two, a thousand, a million, a billion...uncountable numbers. And yet...should one single brick crumble..."
"...the wall itself would follow soon after?"
"Speak your thoughts, brother."
"I am...struck. By the childish desire to say that it is unfair. This manner of burden."
>>
>>27021868

He was pretty much all wrong. There are guys whose job it is to investigate the taint of chaos inside the chapter. You're supposed to report it to them. He went over their heads in order to get Titus out of the way so he could set about on his plan to convert the Ultramarines to Chaos.

"It is a human desire, brother. The world is far from fair. It is unfair. Manifestly unfair. It heaps scorn and pain upon us all. We, the brave, the chosen few, we step forth and bear this weight so that our little brothers and sisters may live their lives with a bit less upon their own shoulders."
"And so...am I so weak, brother-chaplain, that I cannot shoulder my share of this burden."
"You are not the first man to come to me with such confession, brother, and you will not be the last. You are reaching a moment of doubt that comes to many Astartes in their long years of war. It is not wrong to doubt. It is not wrong to look across what seems a vast gulf between ourselves and such figures as the Emperor, or the primarchs, or the great heroes of the Adeptus Astartes and wonder, 'do I measure up?'"
>tap-tap of the crozius upon one pauldron
"When it becomes wrong, brother, is the moment we allow these doubts and these burdens to overcome us. The true glory of humanity is to recognize these doubts and embrace ourselves as imperfect beings, and to find strength despite such burdens. Look to your squadmates. To your sergeant. Ask them, 'from whence do you draw your strength, brother?' Have faith that they will shore up your doubts, as mortar shores up the strength of mere bricks. Take strength from them, and in time know that you shall give it back in their own hour of need. And if need be, think on the four billion people of an agri-world, and how they live for one more day, even just one more hour, thanks to the willingness of a select few, such as yourself, to defend them. That is the essence of true heroism."
"I...I must think on this, brother-chaplain."
"Do. Reflect and consider, and return to me in a week's time. Then we shall talk once more."

one of the high points in Brothers of the Snake is when the main space marine squad of the book gets sent on diplomatic duty to attend the crowning of a new monarch on one of the nearby sector worlds.

They're flummoxed at the soft beds and royal treatment, and when the newly-minted boy king invites them to mingle-

>"Mingle? What in the Emperor's name does that mean?"

-with the crowd at the gala, they proceed to stand rock-solid for the next hour while the court peers at them and occasionally one of the braver attendees comes forward to touch their armor in reverence.

Then the sergeant notices an Inquisitor he recognizes slinking off into a nearby hall and takes off after him, totally without warning much to the crowd's shock.

Get info from local armed forces leader. Inform armed forces of their actions. Suggest tactics armed forces could practice to work in concert with the Astartes.

Camps would be separate. No fraternization between soldiers. SM officers would interact with officers from PDF or Guard. Much of a Marine's routine would need to be kept secret from normal men.

A good deal of Marine recruits are tribal warriors who fight each other, for unknown reasons, for the golden men from the sky. The winners are then variously beaten senseless, tranq'd, or forcefully marched into the hold of a ship.

Wait, space marines don't have nano bots in their blood keeping them alive indefinitely?

No wonder I never got into 40k. It sounds like the most unrealistic future ever, but I guess if you like fantasy then that's cool. Seems pretty boring if regular old space marines didn't have access to immortality (in the sense that you cannot die of natural causes, but obliterating someone's body can't be recovered from, however major wounds can such as getting your head cut off).

Nah, the Imperium's tech is kind of messed up, they could make them ageless, but not immortal. Of course, even someone reduced to just a torso can still fight, as they grant such heroes the honour of being implanted into mechs.

I guess he just goes rogue, starts doing whatever the fuck he wants for a while until he finds a way to get more directly involved with the whole Chaos scene (like finding a cult on a planet he's terrorizing or something) and then networks the shit out of it.

Or, maybe he was just wounded in battle and was taken away by Chaos forces before his brothers could suck out his glorious throbbing geneseed, then he got mind-broken into being a crazy-ass Khornate Berserker or something.

Or, I mean, I imagine if you just stay with your chapter until they engage Chaos forces and then behead your squad and show up at the Chaos HQ with a sack full of their scalps they'd probably let you in.

There was a segment in one of the Eisenhorn books, Xenos, when the inquisitor encountered a SM Librarian.

>"Shaven-headed, a giant of a man even without his
armour, Brytnoth was nevertheless cordial and attentive, addressing me with respect and listening with genuine interest to my replies.
I tried to do verbal justice to my memories of the experience, and additionally related the theories that Malahite had expounded during
that fateful seance.
Eschewing the luxury of a servitor scribe or clerk, Brytnoth made his own notes as he listened. I found myself engrossed watching the
warrior's paw working the dwarfed stylus almost delicately across the note-slate.
We sat in my apartments for the sessions, which often lasted hours. Bequin brought in regular trays of hot mead or leaf infusions, and
Brytnoth actually extended his little finger as he lifted the porcelain cups by the handle. He was to me the embodiment of war in
peacetime, a vast power bound into genteel behaviour, striving to prevent his awesome strength from breaking loose. He would lift the
cup, small finger extended, consult his notes and ask another question before sipping.
The fact that small finger was the size and shape of an Arbites' truncheon was beside the point."

Yeah Alpha Legion would be a good choice but "unfortunately" I have already converted some 2000p of renegade space wolves and is now trying to figure out a reason for them to go renegade.

Wouldn't a chapter who value strength and battle prowess find it kinda disheartening to see their great leader comatose without any hope of recovering? I know they have no love for the Lords of Terra so turning against them wouldn't be much of a surprise
