Lesse... news. Not really that much, here. I'll be attending AWA, so there probably won't be a thread the first week of October- more on that when we get closer to it, if there's any more that comes up.

archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and recently updated character sheet here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

If you're just wanting to get into it without having to dig through the archives for everything, I strongly advise using the sheet, or asking. If one of the guys won't help you out, I'll try to.

++

You let out a low, sliding whistle as the battle group's ships disperse among the rest of the task force. You count at least another three carriers, and what looks to be a pair of LHDs or LHAs- you're honestly not sure, they look the same to you. You've even seen at least one battleship- the USS Louisiana, BB-71, the last battleship built in the US, after the proposed Montana class was canceled in favor of the proven Iowas. You shake your head at that- if not for the martian war, you're pretty sure battleships as a whole would have ended a lot sooner. Hard for a battleship to match a carrier in punch, reach, and versatility. Still, you're sure the devil dogs aboard the assault ships are glad to see her with the fleet- those big guns can still deliver a lot of hurt, and can be on call twenty four hours a day.

Of course, you're not privy to the actual plan- that swings way above your pay grade, not to mention your need to know- but with the collection of firepower here, you're almost sure the it's to simply shoot the marines onto the beaches, then land the Canadian and army troops in the transports and slog across Iceland with help from the fleet's formidable air compliment and cruise missile armament.

1/3
>>
Still, it looks like it's going to be a fight- while there's no dedicated soviet naval assets anyone's seen, there's plenty of fighters on the line at Keflavik, apparently. Latest intel has put their number at thirty plus migs and sukhois, though that doesn't seem too bad, compared to the swarms in Alaska and Japan. Thirty fighters? That's what, one engagement for you?

Of course, there's also significant air defense threats in the area- satellites and a few blackbird passes- and one recon witch pass- have confirmed everything in the book out there- someone thinks they're using those big typhoon subs of theirs to supply the place with heavier equipment, though it's just as possible they've used a couple container ships to move some heavier things into place. It's also possible they've airlifted in more than a little equipment- those big anatovs of theirs could make the flight, and can carry enough to be useful, you know.

You watch in interest as a pair of Seahawks wing their way in- you'd heard another witch unit was inbound, but no one seemed real sure of who it was. That alone is strange- there's not that many witch units in the navy, three, maybe four squadrons, and a couple of units attached to the special operations community. You don't think they aviators, and, if they are, they certainly don't have any Steelwing assets, since there's been no effort to clear out space in the hangar for even a single additional fighter.

2/3
>>
The navy has more witches than that, it's just that the rest are assigned to conventional commands- like Merlin's sister, flying with VAW 113. In all honesty, commands like VF-3 are unusual in the extreme, kept together primarily because of US commitments to the UN Earth Defense Treaty. If any extraterrestrial threat- mars or otherwise- appears, you'll be seconded to the EDF as part of the treaty obligations. You're not exactly sure how that makes you feel, to be honest- rumors say the EDF would probably just use the unit as the core of a reformed JFW, but they're free to shuffle around personnel as they see fit.

Not that you expect that to be an issue. Mars pretty much shot it's bolt, according to people who're paid to know this sort of thing. The ones living on earth, even the ones in places like Roswell, are pretty heavily monitored, too, so there's not much to worry about there- and even if they weren't, there's not that many of them and most of them are pretty loyal, it seems like- you know there's a couple hundred in the Navy, for sure. The seabed colonies are a different story, of course, but they barely maintain a police force, let alone a standing military of any sort.

3/4 (oops)
>>
“Hey Frank, who do you think that is?” Merlin's voice pulls your mind back from it's wanderings. You look at the pair of seahawks again as they flare for their approach, noting that neither carry many identifying marks beyond the US NAVY printed in large letters along their tail boom. While that's not exactly unusual, most units by now have started to adopt 'unofficial' art on their vehicles- your own aircraft's tail is a good enough example of this. It means that, whoever those choppers belong to, either they're brand new, just out of training and formation, or they're special operations and don't want to be recognizable.

better to control it than to repress it.

VMQ2 seems mired with inconsistencies no doubt due to the new fans who can't make up their minds on if they a Jager the second or someone different.
>>
>>27010124

Considering the expert himself said the exact opposite, I'm inclined to disagree.
>>
>>27010140
You over look the fact that he said something similar about repressing it and considering Lucas is basically in a wetworks sort of thing, it'll be hard to keep up a knightly code of honor and when that lapses a mess is going to happen.

It'd be better if Lucas was an engineer i.e. a class that wouldn't have to get messy as much as others.
>>
Gentlemen, could you keep VMQ to VMQ and SWQ to SWQ? Let's try and not cross the streams here.
>>
>>27010066
The new rotation she put in place was because the witches were having trouble keeping up with Frank and the twins because while the Wyverns can loiter for long periods on patrol, the witches have much shorter times they can stay in the air and it was starting to become a problem.

Her system is fine and is better thought out than tiring witches out each time they go on patrol.

[x] “Not a clue, but I've been meaning to go talk to Patty. Let's see if we can go find her.”

Arguing with Ice before a major operation is not a good idea. For all the shit Frank has been getting over frazzled nerves, I'm amazed we haven't called her out on that.

Besides, one of the things we chatted with Slider about is that we've kinda left Patty out in the cold, and I imagine that's only been exacerbated since the accident. Lets chat with her.

[x] “Not a clue, but I've been meaning to go talk to Patty. Let's see if we can go find her.”

You shake your head, pushing yourself off the railing and grimacing at the shooting pain in your shoulder- must have been leaning on it too long.

“Not a clue, but I've been meaning to go talk to Patty.” You say, rotating your arm and rubbing it a bit- the pain fades quickly, thankfully. You'd have been worried if it didn't,honestly. “Let's see if we can go turn her up.”

Merlin nods, casting one look back over her shoulder at the pair of choppers, their blades spinning on inertia now as their crew chiefs open their doors and a small group of witches- maybe eight, total, disembark.

A couple minutes of searching- also known as poking your head into Ice's office and asking Slider, who's in there talking with the boss- turns up Maverick down in the hangar, helping her ground crew and Goose go over their strikers.

Their strikers are housed along the back end of the hangar deck, near the pair of Wyverns. While they're not large in and of themselves- they take up the total space of both of your jets, actually- They still seem like they get more space than they should- even your wyverns are crammed into the bay without too much space available between them, just enough to work on them.

Goose, sitting on the deck of her striker stand, swinging her legs off the side while the tech crew adjusts something in them, sees you first. “Hi Samantha! Hi Frank!” she says, waving.

Merlin smiles and waves back- she gets along with Goose about as well as she does anyone else, though it seems like it's more of an even friendship there, not the little sister thing she's got going with the rest of the witches.

1/2
>>
Mav, standing next to her strikers, talking to the sole tech working on them, nodding occasionally, turns around at Goose's greeting. She doesn't echo it, watching you with a look on her face you can't readily identify. You're not sure if she's happy or apprehensive- she's not been avoiding you, not exactly, but it's not like either of you has made a significant effort to see the other.

“Isn't that cold?” You ask, nodding at her bare feet, noting that, Goose, too, has her shoes and socks off.
They must have been testing magical systems- that's the only reason you can think that they'd be barefoot- it's the only time you've seen any of them barefoot, honestly. Even on alert, they wear shoes they can get in and out of easily.

Patty shakes her head. “Nah, you get used to it.” She says, shrugging. You watch her carefully for the tell-tale smirk that'd herald a lewd comment to follow that- none appears. Maybe she has-

“Kinda like a small-” She continues, before you interrupt her.

“Hey!” You say. “You need to be careful what urban legends you repeat. One of these days, you might just find out which ones are true!”

She turns around at that, shaking her head. “With you?” She says. “Nah, that'd be kinda weird. You're like my brother, Frank.”

“Well,” You say with a shrug. “At least you can't say I never offered.”

She laughs again. “Maybe if the rumors had been a bit more flattering, I'd take ya up on that offer. Now, what can I do for ya?”

“Pfft.” You say, looking around to make sure Merlin's out of earshot. She and Goose both seem to be wrapped up in their own conversation. “What if I'm an exhibitionist?”

Patty laughs. “As if. Though I bet Katya would like that. Anyway, yeah, I’ve got a minute.” She says. “But I'm not walking that far, I don't want to put my boots back on.”

“I could always carry you.” You offer, jokingly.

“Aw, hell naw.” She says. “Then I'd have to deal with Ice and Slider and Katya. Fuck that.”

You laugh. “Fair enough. What's with them, anyway?” You ask.

Patty looks at you like you're beyond hopeless. “I- really? Ya know what? Naw. You're on your own here. I hope that's not what you wanted to talk about.”

You shake your head with another laugh. The two of you walk over to the port side opening on the deck, behind a hornet from VFA-86, the sidewinder logo on the tail painted in a dull black and grey scheme.

“Hey, listen, Frank.” Mav says, leaning on the chain and looking out over the ocean. The fleet's moving north east- you're due to link up with some Canadian ships, then proceed to your station off Iceland while the marines hit the beach. “I'm really sorry about the thing off California. I didn't think about it at all, and I know it doesn't mean much, but I'm sorry about that.”

[] “Not your fault, I didn't think it would be an issue either.”

I'm pretty sure Frank is well aware that both Ice and Slider care deeply about him. Slider more or less broke it down for Frank, regarding Ice and her daddy issues, Slider is physically affectionate and was almost moved to tears when Frank reminded her firmly about his responsibility as an aviator, and Katya may as well be wearing a sign that reads "PUT YOUR POTATO IN MY BORSCHT, FRANK BISHOP. DO IT NOW."

[] “Not your fault, I didn't think it would be an issue either.”

“Not your fault, Patty.” You say, looking out over the ships you can see- even a few miles off and out this side, the fleet's pretty impressive. “Shit, I didn't think it'd be an issue either.”

She shrugs. “Yeah, I figured you'd say that. I still feel guilty. Shit, if you hadn't punched out when you did, I don't know if you'd have walked away. You have some amazing reflexes man, that thing couldn't have even started to skid before you were going for the handles.”

“You get a feel for those kinds of things.” You say. “Like the plane is an extension of yourself and-”

“Oh, don't you start in on that bullshit too.” She says, sounding exasperated. “Rick used to pull the same shit, about feeling the target and being one with the missile and all that shit.”

“In bed, too?” You ask, grinning.

“Bah.” She responds. “Like you'd want to know what we did. Anyway, don't try that quasi-mystical pilot bullshit with me. How'd you even know?”

You shrug, leaning against the chain yourself. “I don't know. It just felt wrong, it did the whole flight. Something was off about that tomcat, and I still don't know what it was. It just... quit, ya know?”

She nods. “Sure, but there's that pilot voodoo bullshit again.”

You laugh. “There's plenty of cases of pilots doing that kind of shit! Look at that chief test pilot, what was his name? Young? Something like that. Dude's legendary for doing that kind of shit.”

Mav laughs. “Yeah, and he was a wartime ace with multiple decorations.”

“So am I.” You point out.

“And he didn't have some sort of messiah witch in his aircraft.” She adds. “Tell the truth dude, if Merlin had been there, could you have gotten that jet down in one piece?”

You look back over your shoulder- where Merlin is standing in Goose's strikers, still in their rack- as the techs work on some system and the two young witches chat away. She waves at you and you nod back.

“C'mon Frank. Could you have gotten that plane down with Merlin in the back seat? What about if Katya was a trained backseater? What about Ice, could you have landed with Ice in the back seat?” She presses.

[] “If I'd had Merlin in the back, we'd have never found out, you'd have never gotten the chance to pass that close to me. I don't know about if Katya had been trained for it, or if Ice was there though.”

/tg/ seems to, on this quest, alternate between professional competence, and utter stupidity.

I mean seriously, we already got chewed out once for treating a multi-million dollar jet as our personal toy, and /tg/ seems hell-bent on making it happen again. At the very least, get Merlin's opinion, and preferably some from the techs.

can't we get a comprimize with talking to merlin, the twins and ground crew if Mav can fit into the wyvern?
>>
>>27014271
And if it's not the same leg things, and something gets messed up because we assumed they were? We have literally zero idea what we're doing, and it would take ten seconds to ask somebody who might know.

The tiniest shred of caution here could prevent something like the interface blowing up due to incompatible magic or something like that. Granted, it is unlikely that anything too bad will happen, but the tiniest shred of caution and common sense could prevent anything bad from happening. You don't fuck with multi-million-dollar pieces of equipment or vital war personnel.
>>
>>27013596
[] “No idea.”

Remember, people. The Wyvern is NOT a toy!
>>
>>27013596
[x] No idea.

ADD "We could ask Merlin!"

Jesus people, Goose adjusts poorly to new strikers. Imagine what might happen if she 'tries on' the Wyvern as part of the test?
>>
>>27014403
To be fair, it's pretty certain that only happens during extended use, and if it's a quick pop in and out, nothing is likely to happen.

The important word, of course, being "likely", a concept whose implications you seem to understand.
>>
>>27014403
What does Goose have to do with this? And, at any rate, her bit before was stated to be a particularly bad case.

>>27014391
>incompatible magic or something like that
Because the techs back in Cali totally wouldn't have spoken up about it if it was a concern.

If there was any sort of power problem I'd say it would be a lack of it on the others' part seeing as when Merlin's slotted in she's interfacing with a lot more tech than just a pair of strikers.
>>
>>27014452
Yeah, I'd like to think the Wyvern's a bit...wilder than a pair of strikers. If the interface works as an extension of the Witch's abilities and senses, Goose would be getting exposed to...well, nothing like she's ever experienced before. Hell, I wouldn't want any of the girls to just hop in without clearing it with Merlin. They worry about rocket legs. Merlin, when she's in the Wyvern, can feel pain when it takes damage to any location on its body, and she's aware of its various systems.

It'd be like putting a dog's conciousness inside a human body, the dog wouldn't know what the fuck.
>>
>>27014523
>Merlin, when she's in the Wyvern, can feel pain when it takes damage to any location on its body, and she's aware of its various systems.

Wasn't that ruled as being a result of her machine empathy or whatever since she's able to talk to all sorts of aircraft?
>>
>>27014466
Because the techs totally had time to explain every single nuance of its operation to us, amirite? They may simply have assumed we weren't stupid enough to stick another witch in there without checking with them.

It costs us maybe a minute to check in with somebody who knows a lot more than we do. It might cost us a hell of a lot more if we just stick a witch into a multi-million dollar experimental jet without a single though of caution.
>>
>>27014574
Because when she mentioned others trying out the Wyvern that's something Merlin totally would've held back information on, amirite?
>>
>>27014611
BITCH HELD OUT ON US OVER HER NIPPONESE BOY TOY WE CAN'T TRUST HER ANYMORE
>>
>>27014523
Even unarmed (cause I doubt they'd arm the Wyvern until needed) Mav could do a lot of damage to the system without realizing it.

Let's not tempt Murphy or Ghost. He's already fucked us over once before for dicking around. I doubt Ghost will hesitate to fuck us over again.

[x] “Hey, let's find out! We can fire it up on the APU and try it out.”

“Well, I don't know, but let's find out!” You say, turning around. “We've got an APU hooked up, and the crew's all here, so it should be pretty easy.”

Patty shrugs. “Sure. Beats acting like a battery for a while, anyway.”

You walk back over to where Merlin and Goose- both out of the strikers, now, sitting on the deck while the crew closes up the access hatches- are. Merlin looks over at you as you walk up.

“Hey Merlin, you think it'd be ok if we put Mav in the back seat to see if your magical thingamabobs are the same as a striker's?” You ask, jerking a thumb back at Patty.

A look of concern crosses Merlin's face briefly, but she shakes her head. “N-no, as long as she doesn't try and reset them, it should be fine.”

You nod. “You can sit up in the front office, if you want, I've got the MFDs up there and you can monitor it all, if you want.”

Merlin shakes her head. “N-not really. All the system controls are in my part of the cockpit, you just have emergency stuff. I'll have to get in and start everything up, then she can try it out, though, if she wants.”

1/3
>>
“Try what out?” Ice says, walking up. “You're not about to do something stupid, are you Frank?”

“Hardly. We were going to see if Merlin's interface in the Wyvern is the same as a striker interface.” You say. “She was helping them run tests on your shit, and me and Patty were curious.”

“Hmm.” Ice says. “Merlin said it was ok?”

Merlin nods. “Y-yeah. I th-think so, Miss Ice.”

Ice shrugs as Slider walks up. “Sure, let's see. Go ahead and set it up.”

You climb up onto the small ledge above the left side intake, following, carefully, the marked path on the back of the big fighter to the handholds running across the 'canopy'. “Don't step off that path.” You warn Mav as she follows you up.

“Fragile, aren't they?” She says, looking across the fighter's back.

You shake your head. “Not really, but picky about areodynamics. Don't need funk from your feet all over the back of my jet.”

“Har-har.” She responds. “Ok, how do I do this?”

“Wait for Merlin to set it up, just sit right there.” You say, hitting the retract control on the side of your ejection seat and dropping down into the dim cockpit. “Ah, shit. Hey! Someone get me a headset!”

Merlin peers over the edge of the hexagonal hatch over your cockpit. “H-here Frank.” She says, handing down one of the ground crew's lightweight headsets. You plug it into the fighter's dataport- where the leads from your vest usually go. In this case, most of the 'plug' is just empty, with just the intercom and radio leads actually used by the headset.

The two of you get the fighter on bare tick over- just the basic systems to run the magical interfaces and their associated systems. You remain in your cockpit as you hear Merlin's seat climb back out on it's rail.

2/3
>>
“Ok, I'm in.” Mav says, a second later, and you hear the motors behind you rolling the seat back down. “This is a bit different. Where's the ports?”

“Y-you have to slide them towards you, Miss Patty.” Merlin says. “Hit that switch r-right there.”

“Ok, got it.” Mav says.

You wait about two seconds before you hear a muted cry. “What's going on back there?” You demand, reaching over for the killswitch for the better part of the aircraft's systems.

“M-miss Patty!” Merlin exclaims over the intercom. “Frank, kill the systems!”

You trip the killswitch, pulling your headset from the port and standing up on your ejection seat, pulling yourself up and out of the now-dark cockpit with your arms.

“Merlin, what happened?” You ask, looking down into the back office- where Patty is slumped over in the chair. “She ok?”

“I-I don't know! Frank, I'm so s-sorry!” Merlin says, practically in tears.

Hell, we don't know what actually knocked Mav out yet. Some sort of feedback from the magitech systems could have fried her rather than overdrawing her mana.

Pretty much what >>27015641 said. I was one of the ones arguing for caution, but "Mav gets KOd" is pretty extreme when there was no non-metagaming information to suggest there was significant reason for concern.

There's a difference between "tailored for one person" and "a deathtrap for anybody but that person". Other than the metagame knowledge that Ghost will fuck us at every opportunity, there was no convincing reason to believe there would be severe consequences. Most equipment tends to have either safety features to prevent serious issues like this, or be plastered with warnings; this was neither.

>>
>>27016037
I don't remember Katya sitting in the Wyvern with us. I do remember being in the Tomcat, which didn't have an interface quite like the Wyvern's.
>>
>>27016037
>Also, Katya had no major issue when she used them in Cali
She was in a Tomcat, not the bleeding edge and highly temperamental Wyvern, of which the Striker versions the Witches all said were very finicky.
>>
>>27016087
For the flight test where shit went down yeah, but wasn't she also in the wyvern at some point before, some time after we talked about her radioing to her family in Russia?
>>
>>27016163
No.
>>
>>27016037
Because Katya was sitting in the backseat of a regular Tomcat, in a station for a regular non-magical RIO.

Patty was plugging herself into a special-made magical system custom tailored for Merlin and Merlin alone.

[x] “Ice! We got a bit of an issue! Call the doc!”

You look back down in the cockpit- you can't tell if she's breathing or not.

“Ice! We got a bit of an issue! Call the doc!” You yell down, trying to figure out how to get yourself down into the already small cockpit to see if you can move Patty.

“I knew it!” Ice yells as slider sprints for one of the wall mounted phone boxes. “What is it with you Bishop?”

“Wasn't fault, boss!” You yell back. “Get up here, I'm going to need a hand!”

“Already on it, sir.” One of the ground crew says, joining you on your canopy perch. “how you want to play this?”

You look down, seeing a few places you can get your boots. “I'll hop down, if she's breathing, we can get her out. I don't want to go for the rescue handles just yet.”

He nods. “Ok, then I'll wait up here.”

You drop down into the cockpit- positively cramped now, with two bodies in here. You feel for a pulse- it's there, and feel strong, hammering, even- that's a good sign, right? You look around for the release for the leg units- and suddenly realize how out of place you are.

And one of the twins. And any other witch RIOs there might be.
>>
“Hey, get Merlin.” You say to the crewdog, settling back as best you can. “Which one of these is the retract?” You ask as she looks over the rim of the hatch.

“T-that one. I-is she...?” Merlin answers, pointing.

“She's still breathing, strong heartbeat.” You respond, shrugging.

Merlin nods, and disappears back over the side, replaced with the crewman. “Alright sir, ready when you are. Doc's here- well, kind of. Some witch, not one of yours.” He says.

“Wonderful.” You mutter, hitting the release and thanking the various gods that Patty doesn't weigh that much- she's well-built, probably on par with Slider, taller and thinner, maybe, but just barely. If this was one of the twins, you might be in trouble.

Working together, the two of you manage to pull her out of the cockpit. You slide down the spine of your fighter, jumping down and receiving the still knocked out Witch from the aircraft maintainer, carefully laying her out on the deck.

>>
“Wot de hall hoppen 'ere?” The doc- a tanned witch with dark brown hair says, kneeling down next to Mav. “She doan look hurt none a-tall.”

“Tried out the suite in the fighter, knocked her out. Is she hurt?” You ask, protectively pulling Merlin into your side.

“Dat I doan know. You let me jes do my ting, heah?” the witch responds- an dog's tail appearing from her backside and the familiar glow of magic use surrounding her.

A frown crosses her face. “She doan be 'urt none. Jes be knocked silly, oui. She must be tryin tings too strong fer 'er, heah? You doan let her do dat no mo.”

“Brigitte, is she ok?” Another voice asks.

“Oui, she be fine.” The witch responds. “She jes try things too strong fo her. Jes need some sleep, I cook her some 'o moi famille's famous gumbo, she be right as rain.”

“Don't get carried away.” The witch says, a tone of command in her voice.

Brigitte stands up, smiling. “She be fine. Yew jus let her sleep some, give 'er some good grub, she be fine.”

You nod. “I- thanks. I'm Lieutenant commander Bishop.” You say, holding out your hand.

The witch takes a step back. “So, you be 'im. Baron Samedi. You 'bes not be makin no moves on me and mine, non. We git along jes fine you do be behavin, oui?”

You frown, trying to decipher her thick accent. “I- yeah, sure, ok.” you say.

She winks and leans in closer. “But me, I bring the good rum, heah? You an me, we drink sometime, oui? I always do be wantin to see how a loa hold 'is drink.”

You nod, confused, as the two witches leave the hangar deck- headed back up into the island.

“Frank, get her back up to quarters, then you and Merlin come talk to me.” Ice says, looking at your aircraft as the ground crew resets the seats and makes sure nothing burnt out when you threw the kill switch.

Once the power supplies and systems are miniaturized enough, they'll probably be fitted onto Witches again.
So instead of just a set of Strikers that go on the legs, it'll probably be a more fully enclosing power armor suit.
Because now that the railgun/coilgun is on the battlefield, it's only a matter of time before it's miniaturized and made ready to fire using a Witch's magic, and a Witch can carry one into battle by herself.

>>
>>27016546
I suspect that for a mix of reasons, some meta ones (the writers of the two 89 series are military nuts and seem to favor enhanced hardware than magical pantless girls flying around)
>>
>>27016546
Yeah, one of the new Witch-Tanks can probably carry a bigger rail/coilgun than a Witch-piloted Mobile Striker can, but at the cost of two Witches in one vehicle, while two MS could operate independently or as a team and have more versatility.

Once we introduce a backpack to a Striker and more refined electronics like what's been developed for the Wyvern, a Witch can carry a magitek version of whatever a tank can carry, and be far more mobile and be a smaller target.

[x] “Got it, Boss.”

You nod. “Got it, Boss.” You say, picking up the thoroughly knocked-out witch and chuckling- you're glad she's not hurt, or worse, and you can't help but laugh a bit at how scared you were there for a few minutes.

You manage to get her back up to the squadron's quarters without too many questions- and you shoot a glare at the twins that, surprisingly, works- they don't even start snarking until you leave the room. You can hear them start as the hatch closes, though.

You and Merlin walk quietly down to the boss' office, walking the open door and sitting down at one of the chairs in there.

“Close that hatch.” Ice says, leaning back in her chair- right before Slider walks in and closes it behind her.

“So, what happened?” She asks. You shrug.

“Hell, you were right there, boss. We had everything on bare tick-over, we were just running minimum to keep the systems up so we could see what it was like.”

Merlin nods. “I-I just dialed it in and left it on idle....” She says, quietly, edging closer to you. “I- I didn't think...”

Ice shakes her head and sighs. “Well, I already notified the captain that one of her witches is down if we have to scramble in the next few hours. She's not real happy about that. But what we're worried about is how fast the jet's systems did that to her- Samantha, hon, how do you have them set up?”

1/2
>>
I am playing war thunder while we wait. what are you fool's doing?
>>
Merlin fidgets. “I- well, they're j-just set up for me.” She says. “I-I just set them so I could monitor the jet a-and make sure it can do what Frank wants it to...”

Ice frowns. “Hon, that shouldn't be drawing anywhere near that kind of energy. I don't even think we could put that into a striker, it'd blow the engines.” She says. “I almost want to test it out myself.”

You shake your head. “Not after what it did to Mav, no way boss.”

Ice looks over at you. “Relax, I said almost. I'm worried about Merlin overdoing it, though.” She says.

“I-I'm fine!” Merlin protests. “I-I keep it on minimum setting unless we're fighting anyway.”

“That was minimum?” Slider asks, surprised. “Sammy, that shouldn't draw anywhere near that much at maximum, what are you doing in there?”

“I-I just keep the plane flying. It's a lot easier in the Wyvern because there's the systems in there, and it's not as demanding as it was in the tomcats.” She says, fidgeting.

“How do you do that?” Ice asks.

“W-well, I have to reinforce a lot of the structural components, a-and I try and assist the jets, too. A-and I can put up a shield, but I think it's pretty w-weak, and I c-can guide missiles if Frank asks, and enhance the cannons and the sensors. A-and I use my talent to t-talk to our fighter so I can react quicker to things I need t-to do.” She says.

Ice frowns. “And you do this all at the same time?”

Merlin nods. “I-I can, now. It's been getting a lot easier than it w-was. W-whatever Frank is doing is helping.”

Ice looks at you. “Whatever Frank is doing...?”

Frank knows he's doing something. He just doesn't know what it is. Is he giving Merlin more mana to use? Reinforcing the plane himself and reducing the strain on her? Using precognition to avoid over-stressing the plane? Somehow using his mana to magnify Merlin's?

>>27017398
Yep. Frank's turning into a Newtype and Merlin's become a walking Lambda Driver.

Didn't Ice/Slider mention something a bit back about the possibility of being some sort of supercharger for witches?

>>

You are assuming shit based on nothing but your desire to just have Frank say "IM A GNOME LOOP DOOP DOOP DOOOOOOOOO SUCK MAH DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK IMA GNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME"
>>
>>27017634
>DESPITE THE RASTA WITCH CLEARLY ALREADY KNOWING
1) Cajun, not Rasta
2) She identifies Frank as vessel for a Haitian spirit thing that is all about death and other things she doesn't want her girls mixed up in (debauchery)

There is such a thing as coincidence. And even if she does suspect that's no reason to go around crying out that you have special powers.
>>
>>27017604
That was one theory, but never confirmed. In the thread >>27017440 another theory is that Frank is using Reinforcement magic on the whole plane. The other theory was Frank's and Merlin's magic working in a feedback loop, each making the other stronger over time.

We've got several workable theories, but no real conclusions. So Frank doesn't really know what's happening.
>>
>>27017701

I thought that was as much a 'he's back from the dead' thing as much as it was a magic thing.
>>
>>27017658
But Ice already fucking suspects that we're a gnome. She already namedropped the Brotherhood. This isn't something that we need to hide.
>>
>>27017701
She might be referring to the whole 'may have died' thing that Frank is known for.
>>
>>27017722
pretty much, Fronk's got a fearsome reputation and his callsign is revenant, also our plane is painted up ominously, so it makes sense for hte witch doctor to draw those lines with her culture
>>
>>27017726
She asked us to keep it between us and her.
>>
>>27017238
>[x] “Turns out, I may be something called loa. Either that or she REALLY doesn't want me hitting on her girls.”
>>
>>27017772
And Slider is her XO. She's probably discussed it with her.

[x] “I have no idea, boss.”

You shrug. “I have no idea, boss.”

“I-I don't think he's d-doing on purpose.” Merlin says, quietly.

Ice looks back over at her. “Say that again?”

“I-I don't think he's doing it on purpose.” Merlin repeats. “I-it's just, sometimes, I go t-to reinforce a system, or the plane tells me that there's a problem devolving, A-and it's just gone.”

“Gone?” Ice asks.

Merlin nods. “L-like it wasn't even there. A-and the harder we fly, the stronger I f-feel.”

Ice leans back in her chair again. “That's- well, Samantha, that's incredible.”

“Damn right it is.” Slider agrees. “Samantha, we've all got firm limits on just how much we can do, with our magic. What you're saying is just-”

“I know!” Merlin says, loudly. “I- I'm not normal, like you! But I know what's happening in my plane! Frank's doing something! H-He helped me save us when that turbine blade failed! ”

“Easy, kiddo.” You say, softly. “Easy. No one's questioning you.”

“I-I'm sorry.” She says, hanging her head. “I- I just... just...” She starts crying.

Slider sighs and sits back in her chair as you stand up and hug your crying RIO. Shooting her a sharp look.

“Sammy, kiddo, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like tha-” She starts.

“Frank's not normal either.” Merlin says, quietly. “H-he's not like any of them in the comics, or any of the ones we read about in school, but he's a gnome, too. Aren't you, Frank?”

[] “I- yeah, probably.”

>>

That's why I mentioned coincidence. It's what it would be if Frank was a gnome and she just happens to call him something that's described as a magical spirit of death & sexy times without knowing about all the shit that's happened regarding the planes he's flown.

[x] “Merlin, I don't know what I am.”

“Merlin, I don't know what I am. No one else seems to either.” You say, softly.

“D-doesn't that scare you?” Merlin asks. “W-we don't know what we are....”

“Whatever I am,” You continue, as if you didn't hear her “I wouldn't be without you. I can't even fly without you, Merlin.”

“B-but...” She starts.

“Nope. No buts. I can't- look what happened when I tried. Whatever I'm doing, I can't do it enough to fly without you.” You state. “Even if we don't know what we are, we're a team, right?”

“I- I guess...” She says, sounding unconvinced- but at least she's not crying anymore.

“Right?” You ask again.

“Y-yeah.” She says, a little more firmly.

“Well,” Ice says, having kept quiet while you were trying to calm down your RIO. “I guess at this point it doesn't matter anyway. As far as anyone's told me, you two are the most effective aerial combat team we have- so regardless of what almost every academy in the western world is yelling at me to do, you'll stay a team. Samantha, if you think one of us can help you- “

Merlin shakes her head violently- she's still not in a good mood, you think somewhat drily.

Ice continues like she didn't see it. “Just let us know. I'll be happy to help you dig around in some of the old libraries if you want to- there may be something that can help.”

“Now,” She says, sitting forward at her desk again “we'll be on station in seventy two hours, approximate. As soon as we are, the easy life is over. You two head back to the squadron quarters, take it easy, alright? We'll bring chow up later.”

You nod, looking at your watch. “Yeah. Thanks boss.”

Ice nods. “It's fine.” She smiles, somewhat weakly. “If nothing else, all of us have a whole hell of a lot more respect for Merlin's strength now. You two go on, we'll be up later.”

And that's it for tonight!

You guys should have seen all the PMs pop up when Mav plugged into Merlin's station. Haha! it's all good though, I'm glad that there's characters you guys like.
