So after thinking my Planes and mercs homebrew was dead after a catastrophic HDD failure a couple years back, my brother pops up with a copy of the version 2 rules I sent him.

as for the setting information- if you're interested in writing, poke me on the IRC and we can get you squared away. there's still a lot of holes in the setting sheet, but that's why I try and stay available.

The loading sheet for the wyvern is done, I'll have a link when we need it.

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
And short notes version here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

the short version is kind of out of date, but if you ask in thread what's up, either one of the guys or myself will try to help out.

++

“So, you never told me about your family.” You say to Rosalie, leaning back with your arms crossed- she's played right into your trap, and now she'll have to make a choice between losing a rook or a bishop. Personally, you hope she loses the rook.

This is the first time you've really managed to come to grips with her- the last few matches, she's stomped your ass flat. Still, there's not much better to do, besides this, read, or try and sleep. The whole task force has been on alert crossing north of Cuba- while, officially they're not taking sides in this, a CVBG, while a hard target, is a pretty tempting one.

At least, that's what everyone figures, but Castro's boys and girls have only been maintaining their normal routine. Still, the fleet BARCAP is out a little farther than usual, and word's come down that at least one witch and one wyvern need to be on alert at all times. You just thank your gods that you got a rest period to catch up while you transited the canal and the gulf, but you hope you don't have to maintain this status for long- it's not too bad on the witches, they can cycle amongst themselves, but it's wearing on you and the twins.

1/3
>>
Ice has actually only just recently issued a complaint, stating the orders are putting undue strain on her steelwing crews, and asking if she can substitute in another witch. You can't help but note, though, that she hasn't done so on her own initiative, even though that's completely within her right. Part of you wants to be happy that she apparently thinks you can handle it- and part of you wants to be irritated she's allowing this kind of strain to be put on you and the twins with combat coming up inside the week.

She shrugs. “Well, there isn't much to tell. I'm an only child, so was my mother. My grand-mere married a man she met during the war, a gunner in a night fighter” She smiles and shakes her head. “He was English, serving with the American army air corps. He likes to tell us stories of some of the things the crew of that aircraft did, and how grand-mere acted when she first met him. She was not as fond of the stories.”

She pauses, tapping her lips with an index finger, and reaches for her bishop- then pauses again.

“They moved back to France after the war and she dedicated most of her fortune and time to rebuilding.” She says, moving her hand away from the bishop. “Mother was born shortly after they moved back, and joined the ADA early. She met my father in Algeria, during the troubles there.”

She moves her knight- a play you didn't expect- thus neatly putting your attack on hold while you react to this new threat. You curse inwardly, looking for a quick way out of her play, and finding none.

“When I was born, they agreed that their current tours were their last. For my father, it was in more ways than one- he was killed a few months into his.”

“I'm sorry,” You say with a grimace.

2/3
>>
“Pourquoi? I never knew him, and my papa was good to me. I wish I knew him sometimes, but it is nothing that bothers me.” She responds, nodding when your fingers lightly brush a pawn. You pull your hand back and tap the table with your index finger.

“I joined the marine nationale as soon as I was able,” She smiles. “Their recruiter offered a better deal for me, you see. Grand-mere and mama weren't so happy, but I think they're both glad I am a flying witch, as they were.”

You chuckle at that, nodding. “And the fiancee?”

She smiles. “Jean-Luc? We met during a joint exercise, while I was assigned to support the chasseur's landings. We were on the second day of the exercise, and we were scrambling witches to deal with an opposing sortie. I ran into him while he was on the way to his assigned station- being with the army, he had trouble finding his way around the ship, oui?”

You nod, imagining either of your brothers trying to make sense of a carrier.

“We yelled at each other,” She continues. “And I eventually used magic to shove him out of the way. He approached me later and demanded a date to make up for it. I had regretted my actions, and so I agreed.”

She smiles. “I have not regretted it since.

She looks across the table at you. “What of you, Frank? What is your Famille like?”

USS Jack Williams (FFG 24)
USS Jesse L. Brown (FF 1089)
USS Capodanno (FF 1093)

[x] “There's been a Bishop in the US military since before there was a US military. We've got a long tradition with it.”

You shrug. “Well, there's been a Bishop in the US military since before there was a US military.” You say, still examining the chess board, as if a solution will present itself if you look hard enough. “We've got a long tradition with it.”

Rosalie nods.

“We were in the revolution- some forefather or other of mine fought in the Carolinas, mostly. War of 1812, same deal, same forefather. He'd had a son, by then, who'd go on to fight in the Mexican-American war, and later lead a regiment of Iowa volunteers in the west under Grant up till Vicksburg.” You say, elaborating. “We missed the Spanish American war, and we weren't really involved in the Indian wars at all, but my great granddad was at Bellau wood with the second of the fifth marines.”

Rosalie nods. “I too, had family in the great war. Verdun.”

You smile at that. “Man, Verdun was... well, I don't want to get sidetracked. Dad's dad was a Marine Raider in the pacific, did a lot of work with some special tasks group or other, I think. He didn't talk about it much. He died back in '87. Grandma's a witch, in both senses of the term.”

Rosalie frowns. “You don't get along with her?”

>>
You shake your head. “Nah, not at all. She thinks the sky is a witch's place, not a man's. I'm kind of her least favorite grandchild, and it shows.” You shrug. “Not that it bothers me too much.”

“And that is your father's side, oui?” Rosalie asks. “Are you going to move?”

You laugh. “I'm working on it! And yeah. Mom's mom was a WASP, ferried fighters across to Britain during the war. Well, not fighters, she worked mostly with twin engine jobs- Widows, invaders, lightnings, that kind of thing. Grandpa was a fighter jock, like me. Flew corsairs over most of the Pacific, was in almost every major battle there- Midway, Honshu, you name it. He met grandma post-war.”

Rosalie nods, looking over at Merlin. “What about you, little sister? What's your family like?”

Merlin looks up from her comic- that one you bought her for her birthday- and hesitates. “Oh. I-it's really not all that great, like yours or Franks. We're not really all that famous...”

“W-well, My mom and dad are both engineers. Dad works for Boeing, you've met him, Frank.” She says, and you nod.

“Mom works for the navy, but she's a civilian. She teaches some, at the academy in Annapolis, but not every year, and her class is usually just for witches that want to go into weapons development.” She says, looking back down at the floor. “Sara and I, we're the first of our family to join the military. Grandma and Grandpa worked at a base in Australia during the war, Grandma helped with the sub striker program, before it got canceled.”

Rosalie narrows her eyes. “Your grand-mere worked with the first substriker project?”

Merlin hesitates, then nods. “Y-yeah. I guess she helped with early jet strikers after that, but I don't really talk to her much. W-we're not as tight knit as your families, I guess.”

Rosalie smiles at that, and indicates you. “Seems to me, little sister, you've got good family right here.”

You shrug. “Mine aren't either, Merlin.” You say. “But that hardly means they're not interesting. Besides, when this is done, you'll probably get a few issues of those devoted to you.”

She shakes her head. “I-I don't think so. And Frank, they are! This one's about the rescue of Lieutenant Harumi Ogawa, and there's an Eddie Bishop in here- he's a lieutenant with a marine raider platoon.”

Rosalie sits back. “Your grand-pere is that Eddie bishop?” She asks, leaning back in her chair. “That's très impressionnant, Frank. Very famous action.”

“It is?” You ask. “Grandpa Eddie never really talked about what he did, just the guys he knew. I don't really know anything about it.”

Rosalie nods, looking over at Merlin. “Oui.” she said. “It is hardly surprising. The operation was very secret. The Martians, they never kept a live witch captive for more than a few days, you know this, oui?”

1/2
>>
You nod. “Sure. They were either rescued, died of their wounds, or in that one case, she died in her escape attempt, didn't she?”

Rosalie nods. “Oui. Though that last, she escaped and died of her wounds later. Harumi Ogawa has the distinction of being the only witch they had as a live prisoner for more than a few days. The operation to recover her, at that point, was launched because high command was afraid what would happen if the Martians were ever to gain weapons effective against witch shields.”

Merlin nods. “A-and the comic is about how the sub witches worked with a Marine raider team to get her back!”

Rosalie looks back at you. “Oui. Their original orders were just to make sure that, when they left, nothing was left alive in the base. Command would have rather had her dead than alive in Martian custody. I can find the witch's report on the whole affair, if you'd like. One of them wrote a detailed report for her academy's archives. With Lieutenant Bishop's report- filed months later- it should be an accurate picture.”

[x] “That'd be great, but no rush.”

You nod. “That'd be great, but it's no rush.” You say. “Granddad Eddie talked about his unit a lot, but not so much about the war. He got out shortly after it, I guess.”

Rosalie nods. “From what I remember, he countermanded the order to kill Lieutenant Ogawa- stating that he didn't come this far simply to kill a witch, as if that were easy to him. I believe they said she was feral, or nearly there, a wild creature, non?”

You nod, believing it.

“If I am remembering correctly, it was mentioned how she didn't react as badly around him, and he was assigned as her escort and guardian while she was rehabilitated.” Rosalie continues. “I'm not sure though. I'll try to get those records for you.”

You can only imagine that- Grandpa's way of handling you and your brothers and sister was to give each of you 20$, a box of shells for the .22, and a candy bar, and tell you to go have fun. Drove your mom completely insane, but your dad just laughed. Him taking care of someone like Rosalie describes... well, you've seen comedy movies that run close to what you're thinking. You've also seen tragedies that do, too.

Rosalie shrugs. “It was also that operation that convinced most nations the subwitch had merit as a special operations force. After the war, many nations began their own subwitch programs.” She smiles. “I nearly joined ours, but I decided flying was better than swimming and walking.”

You laugh at that, nodding. “I hear it.” You agree.

Rosalie looks back over at Merlin. “Where does that episode end?”

Merlin flips through the comic to the last page. “When they find Ogawa.” She says, with a frown. “H-hey Frank, wasn't Katsumi's friend named Ogawa?”

1/2
>>
You nod. “I'm sure they're related, too.” You mutter.

Merlins response is lost as the hatch to the ready room bangs open and Slider stalks in with the twins. “Guess it's our turn for a while.” She says. “Rosalie, Katya wanted to see you when you got the chance. Frank...” She pauses, looking at you.

“I got nothin.” She says with a grin. “Ice said something about going to see her, she wants to rearrange how we're flying.”

She shrugs. “You can go check and see what she wants, but it's not that important, I think. So either do that or go find a way to make yourself useful. And if ya can't do that, just stay out of everyone's way.”

[x] Go see what Ice wanted!

You fill up a pair of mugs with coffee- while it's not that late, yet, it's getting there, and the sun is just starting to set. You caught one while transiting the canal- you'd only wished you'd had a Polaroid with you. Merlin follows you, her own mug in one hand, and her comic rolled up and deposited in her flight suit's waist pocket.

Ice answers her door on the first knock and you stroll in, letting Merlin close the door behind you. The office- such as it is- is small, and designed to be shared with the commander of the other witch squadron. Since the other squadron isn't here- and may not be assigned here anyway- it's not too bad.

“Evening boss.” You greet, putting the mug of coffee down on her desk.

“Good evening, Frank. Slider tell you I wanted to talk?” She says, picking up the mug and taking a tentaitve sip.

You nod. “Yeah, said something about rearranging the squadron.”

Ice nods. “Thanks for the coffee. And yes. I want the twins on your wing from here on in.” She says. “It makes a lot more sense than putting a witch there.”

You nod, agreeing- it does make a lot of sense, given that your aircraft have the same flight profile.

“Second, from here on in, you two steelwings are going to be the number three and four in the lead element. I'm giving Rosalie our second element and keeping Maverick and Goose with her and Katya.” She continues with a sigh. “Are you up to speed with your new weapons? Fully confident in them?”

[] “Yeah, we're confident they'll get the job done.”

Hell, I'm firmly in the Fronk x Ice camp, I just think it's not a bad thing to try and speak with our friends too. I'm not the kind of ass who would avoid talking to people to score "points" somewhere else.

At some point, assuming we end up making a decision on who to end up with, we still have to deal with these people on a regular basis, depending on the circumstances of war and all.

I don't think Frank is the type of guy to duck out of talking with people who want or need to talk with him. Officer, gentlemen, ace pilot, and bro.
>>
>>26869042

Yeah, this, actually. No point in overspecialisation. We are a mixed squadron, after all. Might as well benefit from it. Spreads the BVR out as well, support'll be there with the witches quicker, and their close up abilities'll be on hand rather than needing a call in.
>>
>>26868948
[X] “I'm not so sure, to be honest. A lot riding on new stuff with rushed testing.”
[X] Schedule a live-fire exercise
I thought we'd all learned our lesson about being extra-paranoid with our stuff when the F-14 crashed? Best to figure this out now than when we hit combat, even if it means firing off a few of the new weapons.
>>
>>26869042
I agree, also, giving the other steelwing to our second element helps them out with BVR and heavy hitting capabilities when we're not around, what happens if we get another fight like in china, where the witches are stuck by themselves and need our ordnance but we're fighting else ware?

It makes sens to put the steelwings together on paper, not in combat when we need to spread out our missiles, having 2 mixed elements of steelwing + witches has worked well for us and helps cover any weaknesses we would have with overspecialising
>>
>>26868948
[x] “Yeah, we're confident they'll get the job done.”
[x] “Kind of worried about ammunition, honestly.”
[x] OTHER: You sure about the Steelwings sticking together boss? Things have worked out pretty well as is. If we keep the Wyverns together, there's a chance we both might not be where you guys'll need us, if it comes to it.
>>
>>26868948
>[] "Yeah, we're confident they'll get the job done."

"Boss, theres a reason why things have worked well for us now, having the mixed sections allows us to cover more airspace with the steelwings ordnance and help support the witches while still being effective in their given tasks, clumping them together and segregating the witches is just going to lead to scenarios where you need our missiles and we aint there, or we need your cover and you aint there, either way we get torn to shreds by dividing forces like that"

I still think we need a Kitty Hawk Steelwing pilot on the Saratoga, and he should totally be a Clouseau-type of character. A badass ace who teaches people in better jets a thing or two despite his immense disadvantages.

He shouldn't be NEARLY as god-mode about it though. Age and experience, coupled with losing a lot of good friends on the Kitty Hawk.

You nod. “Yeah, for the most part. I'm kind of worried about ammo, we can't have loaded that much aboard, given how sudden this was.”

Ice shrugs. “Worst case, we'll use a greyhound to get you some more. I think one of the replensishment ships with the task force is supposed to have more, too. Now, how are you on the flight arrangements? Be honest.”

You shrug again. “Makes sense, but I'm kind of iffy, boss. Having the radically different flight profiles has helped before in furballs.”

Ice nods. “The problem is that Katya's the only one of us that can match you for range. If we start getting tasked to patrols, and we will, I can't use anybody but her for a standard CAP. There's doctrine in place for witch CAP, of course, but that's a lot closer in to the fleet, so...” She shrugs. “For now, this is how we're going to fly. If we need to change it later, we will.”

You shrug. “If you think it's a good call, boss, I'll go with it.”

She smiles, slightly. “It also lets me keep a better leash on. You. A better leash on you. If we do go back to the other way of doing things, I'm keeping you in with us so I can keep an eye on you. The twins I can trust to not go gallivanting off on some heroic stunt.”

You sigh, not wanting to get into it right now, especially not with Merlin in the room.

“Ah, come on, boss.” You say. “It was only that one time.”

“One ti-” She starts, but you interrupt, leaning forward and putting your elbows on her desk, and your fists under your chin.

“Now, what was this about leashes?” You ask, grinning from ear to ear.

“I- uh. Um.” Ice says, suddenly flushing a brilliant crimson. “N-nothing. Dismissed, Bishop.”

You stand up with a grin, nodding to Merlin, who's looking at you, then back at Ice- then back at you.

“We- we'll talk about this later.” She says as you step out “The heroics thing, not that... other... thing. It's gotta stop, Frank. We can't afford to lose you.”

You wave that off, closing the door as she says 'lose'. You'd really rather not get into the argument now, and you get the impression she didn't want to either. Well, that or her mind wasn't in it, one of the two. Leashes, eh? You make a mental note to keep that one in mind.

You and Merlin head down to the squadron bay- while it's small, it's the only 'private' space the unit has- you're glad you get along with everyone, to be honest. Still, you knock on the hatch before opening it- giving anyone inside at least a little bit of warning you're stepping in.

You're glad you did- Rosalie, apparently, was changing, and you step back out with a muttered “Sorry” as you close the door. Merlin looks up at you and shakes her head with a giggle. You do your best to give her a stern look- and it fails miserably.

You step back in a minute later, after Rosalie's had a chance to climb into her rack and draw the curtain over it. Merlin, by contrast, goes to sit at the small table, pulling her comic out to read it again. You chuckle.

“Haven't you read it two or three times already, Sam?” You ask, unzipping the top half of your flight suit and taking off your boots. The linoleum here is cold, sure, but dammit, this is home, at least for the time being.

She nods, then smiles. “B-but it's got your grandpa in it, and even if it's just a comic, he seems like a neat guy.”

You laugh again, stacking your boots in your locker before crawling up into your own rack and pulling the curtain back. “If you only knew the half of it, Sam. Don't stay up too late, alright?”

You don't see her nod- even if you know she did, looking down at the comic book in front of her. “O-ok Frank. Goodnight!”

Stop being so damn adorable, Merlin

And that's it for the night!

Some elaborations, by the way. the world doc is request only at this point, just because it's not totally done, and I can see a lot of questions popping up. Sorry about that, but I'll do my best to be available while I work on it.

The loading sheet for the wyvern uses a pared down version of the planes and mercs homebrew's loading rules, so it'll be a bit of a playtest- woo for doing two things at once!

Anyway, that's it for the night, guys, as always, I hope you guys had fun and I'll see ya next week!

cheers guys!

Ice thinks Frank needs to be on a leash for walkies.

IIRC she's the one that really wants to be on a leash. Admittedly Fronk doesn't know that though
