Predator Quest: Episode 48

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue. Your investigations have ultimately led you to Earth - where you will strike out at Weyland-Yutani's headquarters.

As you speed away from the destruction of the station, you turn your attention to the matter at hand.

The Kraken-Slayer is getting torn to pieces by marauding small craft. The cruiser's impact had gouged a long and deep gash along its side, and only a handful of guns are operational.

Friendly reinforcements in the form of recalled patrols are trickling in, but the bulk of the clan fleets will not arrive for several hours. Worse - scattered fold-space reports from distant patrols are saying there is a sizeable Weyland-Yutani fleet on their way.

You see a request for comms from Commander Ether-Kris, the most senior officer of the now decapitated Cloud-Viper fleet. He is asking you who should be placed in command of the remnant ships.

How you respond?

A. Assume command of the remaining four destroyers.
B. Give command of the destroyers to Ether-Kris, the next most senior officer after Jackal.

"On the authority of the Empress and Jackal-of-Carrion's will, I'm assuming command," you tell him. "Status. Are your guns operational?"

The officer salutes you. "Our main guns are still offline, but we've switched our point defense turrets to manual targeting and have gunners stationed at each. Engines are fully operational. Your orders?"

You say:

A. "Full speed towards the Kraken-Slayer and give her covering fire."
B. "Full speed to the remaining shipyards and stop any further boarding attempts."
C. "Form up on me and give me some cover."

A second call pings yours comms. It's Steel-Arrow.

"Three-Claw, I have Sharp-Strike, Burning-Scythe, and Seeking-Eye with me on board. The matriarchs are scrambling more ships ground-side, but we decided not to wait for them. Where do you want us?"

You tell him:

A. "Form up and give me some covering fire."
B. "Get to the dry docks and see if you can get one of those heavy cruisers operational."
C. "Get to the Kraken-Slayer and join the fray."
D. "Go into foldspace and find that inbound human fleet. I want eyes on them as soon as possible."

>B.

"Get to the dry docks and see if you can get one of those heavy cruisers operational," you order. "If they can do it, then so can we."

You open a comms channel to the Cloud-Viper fleet. "Fleet, your orders are to escort Steel-Arrow and his warriors to the drydocks and provide cover while they activate the ships."

Steel-Arrow and your officers quickly acknowledge your orders.

You open a comms channel to the Kraken-Slayer. Flame-Mantle's face appears on the holo-screen. He shouts a few terse orders to his desperate officers, and turns to you. "Engines are down. Port guns disabled. I'm bleeding plasma from both reactors. Unless you've got a plan, I'll need to issue an abandon ship order."

You take stock of your armament. You've still got one missile rack left operational.

How do you respond:

A. "Shut down your reactors and go dark. I'm launching disruptor torpedoes your way. It'll hopefully disable the smaller enemy ships."
B. "Your ship is lost. Get to the escape shuttles."
C. "Hang tight. I'm moving towards you now. I can draw some fire and spray them down with these autocannons."
D. "Hang on. I'll launch a frontal attack on their cruisers, draw some fire away from you."

>B.

"Your ship is lost. Get to the escape shuttles," you tell him somberly.

"Understood. We are evacuating now."

You close the comm channel and issue an order to all small craft still valiantly defending the Kraken-Slayer.

"Kraken-Slayer is being evacuated. All ships prepare to cover the shuttles."

With Kraken-Slayer down, you would have lost your one and only fight-capable capital ship. The situation quickly turns grim.

The two enemy cruisers manuever themselves unchecked towards the edge of the planetary system, to the point where friendly ships are exiting fold-space. As your reinforcements arrive piecemeal, they are met by a devastating barrage of fire and destroyed. If you mean to win this battle, you must acquire more firepower.

You open a channel to Steel-Arrow. "Status."

"We're on the bridge of the battleship Silver-Tempest. Her hull is in one piece but the weapon systems haven't been calibrated yet and the missile racks are empty. We can get her online and moving now but if you want her to shoot straight, we'll need at least half an hour more."

You reply:

A. "Get her out of the drydock and into the fight, NOW!"
B. "Then do what you need to do to bring her to full combat capacity. We'll try to buy some time."
>>

Do we have some fission torpedoes?

Scuttle the Kraken-Slayer while we're at it.

>>26783803
>B.

"Then do what you need to do to bring her to full combat capacity. We'll try to buy some time," you order.

"If you want this ship at full fighting capacity, we'll need a crew," Steel-Arrow tells you.

You send an order to the station survivors, sending them to rendezvous with the battleship.

You scan the battlefield. The last of the shuttles have left Kraken-Slayer's ravaged hull. The once magnificent capital ship now drifts silent in the void. The skirmish around it, however, does not abate, as small craft from both sides strafe and claw at each other.

You turn your attention to the two enemy cruisers, and wince as they destroy a friendly corvette jumping out of fold-space.

Do you:

A. Launch a volley of fission torpedoes at the cruisers. (DC: Medium-Hard)

You lock on to one of the cruisers and let loose a volley of three disruptor torpedoes. The warheads speed towards the target on a trail of plasma exhaust, but as they approach, a hail of point defense plasma fire greets them. Two are shot down immediately while the third takes a grazing shot to the plasma motor and careens out of control, missing its target by a wide margin.

By opening fire, you've drawn the attention of several smaller ships, which now heads towards you.

Do you:

>B. Fire a second volley of fission torpedoes at the cruisers (Critical Failure);

You target the cruiser once again and let loose a volley of fission torpedoes. But before the warheads have a chance to leave the tube, an enemy fighter opens fire with his plasma cannons, slamming bolt after bolt into the missile launcher. The human metal alloy melts under the withering fire and distintegrates. The entire ship shakes as additional shots slam into the hull.

Your auto-cannons open fire, but the agile enemy fighter handily evades the high velocity slugs. With both your missile racks destroyed, you are no longer able to launch any missiles.

More enemy fighters approach your position, and begin to make strafing runs against your hull. Concentrated autocannon fire is holding them off for now, but it's only a matter of time before you're overwhelmed.

What is your next step?

A. Order all friendly ships to converge on your position and provide you with covering fire.
B. Hold your position and attempt to stave them off long enough for the battle ship to come online. (DC: Hard)
C. Move your ship towards the shipyard and join your fleet.

>>B. Hold your position and attempt to stave them off long enough for the battle ship to come online. (Fail, vs. DC 16)

You do your best to work the targeting systems and stave off the enemy fighters, but there are simply too many of them. The human cannons seem anemic against the superior armor and maneuverability of the enemy crafts.

Volley after volley of plasma fire streak along your hull, and slowly, your autocannon turrets are blown apart. You claw on for dear life, knowing the next hit could vaporize your bridge. It's a difficult thing to accept, but it seems this ship is lost. Another volley of plasma fire slams into your hull, this time ripping your engine and storage bay to pieces.

Do you:

A. Broadcast a call for help and hope for whoever can respond.
B. Get in an escape shuttle and abandon ship.
>>
>>26784479

Deciding there's no way to salvage your ship, you quickly make the decision to abandon ship. You set what's left of your fission torpedoes to a timed detonation protocol, and leap into the escape shuttle.

You pop the hangar doors and jet away from the wrecked human vessel. You head for the only safe harbor in the chaotic battlefield - the shipyard.

The human ship, and its stockpile of fission torpedoes, detonate behind you, vaporizing a few enemy vessels in the process. You come to a landing inside the shipyard hangars, and quickly step out.

You look around. You see your ship parked in the hangar, and several warriors busily loading munitions onto the docked battleship.

Do you:

A. Head to the bridge of the battleship Silver-Tempest.
B. Head towards your ship and get inside the cockpit.

Suddenly, you hear a fold-space transmission from a familiar voice. "This is Ashen-Blade," the message says, "returning from sortie; on my way with reinforcements. Human vessels in tow. Do not shoot."

You quickly note the two cruisers still blockading the system. Do you:

A. Warn Ashen-Blade about the blockade and tell him to hold off until your battleship is fully operational.
B. Order the battleship to leave drydock, partially armed, and head straight for the two cruisers.

You quickly record a response message and blast it through fold-space. You warn Ashen-Blade about the blockade and tell him to hold off until your battleship is fully operational.

You wait a while for the response, and it comes. "Understood. Exiting foldspace. Standing by to re-engage. Give us signal when clear."

You turn your attention once more to the two cruisers. You look around. Friendly forces, already outnumbered, and with reinforcements cut off, are rapidly losing the skirmish. One of the blockading cruisers begins to maneuver towards the shipyard.

If that cruiser manages to bring its guns to bear on the station, all is lost. Your fleet moves to engage, but your destroyers, with their main guns still offline, would serve as little more than speedbumps.

You open comms to the battleship Silver-Tempest. "Status. How much longer?"

"At 60% fighting capacity. Forward cannons still offline. Torpedoes racks are still being loaded. Spinal cannon online. Plasma turrets online."

Do you:

A. Strafe the incoming cruiser and attempt to slow it down with your ship.
B. Strafe the remaining cruiser holding the blockade and attempt to draw it away.
C. Order the battleship to evacuate the dock and join the fight.
>>
>>26784706

You bring the ship around to face the incoming cruiser, and engage your throttle to prepare for an attack run.

The enemy cruiser begins to target the four destroyers in your fleet, lobbing volley after volley of fission torpedoes against them.

The destroyers, their plasma turrets still active, open fire on the incoming torpedoes, and vaporizes the first wave with an excellent display of marksmanship. The cruiser, perhaps intimated by the formation of destroyers, suddenly, cuts its engines, turns, and begins to drift back to its comrade at the blockade point.

You wonder if they perhaps were afraid the destroyer's primary guns are online.

>>C. Hold position along with the destroyers and continue to bide your time until the battleship comes online.

You watch the cruiser pull away from you and order your fleet to hold their position.

You are soon come under assault by a swarm of enemy small craft, rushing to cover the cruiser's retreat.

Together, with your destroyers, you manage to hold off attack run after attack run.

After what seems like an eternity later, you hear Steel-Arrow's welcoming voice over comms. "Forward guns are online. Torpedo tubes are loaded with fissions and seekers. We're still under-crewed but it's as good as it'll get. Pushing off from dry-dock now."

You quickly turn to see the large warship tear free of its moorings, and turn slowly towards you. A volley of seeker missiles explode from its side and tear through the small crafts around you. Several enemy fighters burst into flames from the missiles.

The two cruisers, noticing the sudden behemoth, begins to turn towards your new battleship.

Watching the battleship unleash hell fills you with sudden hope. You are still well aware of the odds - the enemy still has two cruisers and a swarm of small craft, and that's still more firepower than the lone battleship can muster.

Do you:

A. Order the Silver-Tempest to focus on holding off the fighters.
B. Order the Silver-Tempest to engage the cruisers head on.
C. Order Silver-Tempest to bombard the cruisers from long range with fission torpedoes.

You open a comm channel to Steel-Arrow and order him to bombard on the blockading cruisers at standoff range. Together, with the four destroyers, you engage the enemy fighters to swat them away from the battleship.

The Silver-Tempest's missile bays slide open, and release twelve fission torpedoes in a single volley towards the cruisers.

Several are shot down by intervening fighters running interception, but enough get past. The cruisers quickly undergo evasive maneuvers, and desperately open fire with their plasma turrets.

Just as they manage to shoot down the first wave, the second is already on its way. Another dozen fission torpedoes rip their way past the intercepting fighters and heads straight for the cruisers.

The cruisers, with difficulty, shoot down the second wave. Their engines flare, and they begin to maneuver to encircle your fleet from both sides in a pincer maneuver.

More importantly, they've turned their backs on the blockade point.

Do you:

A. Signal Ashen-Blade to arrive.
B. Allow the cruisers to commit themselves to battle before giving the signal.

You open a subspace channel towards the last message received from Ashen-Blade and give him the clear to jump in.

You quickly survey the battlefield. One of your destroyers has suffered heavy damage but the other three are still very much in the fight, hosing incoming fighters with accurate plasma fire.

The enemy cruisers are closing in from both your flanks. Your battleship's broadside firepower is no match for their frontal firepower, and cannot face both at the same time. Worse - if left alone, the relatively faster cruisers can run circles around the ponderous battleship.

Do you:

A. Gather all your remaining forces and push aggressively towards one of the cruisers.
B. Have the battleship hold one off while you and the destroyers take on the other one.
C. Attempt to hold your position and have the battleship alternate between the two targets.

You order your fleet to form up and assume formation. With the battleship at the center, the destroyers along the flanks, and your ship leading the charge, you swing towards the cruiser approaching on your right and maneuver towards it.

The cruiser halts its engines and begins to swing sideways. It trades a few missile volleys with the battleship while working hard to remain out of weapons range, buying time to for its comrade to line up a shot to your formation's rear.

Suddenly, a crack appears in the void of space and several ships appear, one by one. You recognize the ship leading the flotilla - it's Ashen-Blade. Behind him are two human heavy cruisers sporting the Colonial Marines insignia and a third battleship marked with the Weyland-Yutani corporate logo.

The inbound flotilla immediately opens fire upon the cruiser circling to your rear. Missile bays open up from all three capital ships, loosing hundreds upon hundreds of human missiles. They sail towards the cruiser, overloading its point defenses.

Several missiles get through and slam into the cruiser. Shaped nuclear charges detonate, scorching its hull with lances of plasma. Though their yield is far less individually than your fission torpedoes, they make up for it in numbers.

The cruiser, reeling from such withering fire, turns towards the flotilla, its engines blazing.

Do you:

A. Continue engaging your current target and let the flotilla handle the other cruiser.
B. Switch targets and maneuver to the rear of the other cruiser, crushing it rapidly between you and the humans.

You order your fleet to continue pushing forward. The Silver-Tempest's spinal cannon begins to glow white hot as it siphons power from its massive reactor.

The enemy cruiser's engines flare, in an attempt to dodge the incoming shot.

The cannon fires a white plasma lance forward at the cruiser, and cleaves straight through its target's side, creating a long and deep gash against the hull.

The cruiser begins to fire its cannons at the battleship while moving frantically from side to side.

Enemy small craft begins to aggressively make attack runs on the battleship's spinal cannon.

Do you:

A. Move in and attempt to disable the cruiser's engines.
B. Sweep in and attempt to disable the cruiser's cannons.
C. Go after the enemy fighters and keep them off the battleship.

>>C. Go after the enemy fighters and keep them off the battleship.

You target the nearest enemy fighter and open fire. You sweep its flight path with your plasma gatling cannon, and shred it to pieces.

The destroyers, too, bring their plasma turrets to bear, and deny the enemy fighters a chance at a clear attack run.

The battleship begins to open fire upon the cruiser with its forward guns. The two capital ships trade fire for a while, but the Silver-Tempest has the clear edge with its massive spinal cannon.

Another white-hot plasma lance streaks through the front of the enemy cruiser, and gouges a deep gash through its front. The cruiser returns fire desperately, its plasma shots smashing into the battleship's hull.

The battleship, outweighing and outgunning its opponent, takes the hits in stride and returns fire in kind. The spinal cannon once again fires, and this time, it cleaves clean through the enemy cruiser's bridge, and carves up its insides. The cruiser's guns cease firing, and it is still.

Behind you, the remaining cruiser begins approach the human ships, advancing under a storm of missile fire.

Do you:

A. Hail the traitorous ship and demand his surrender.
B. Direct your fleet to annihilate it.

Weyland-Yutani is still on its way. There will be more forces.

We must destroy them. They killed our mentor and attempted to kill 10 million Yautja. They will simply lie and wait for their reinforcements if we hesitate.

You face the ship, now silent and afloat, its bridge now destroyed. You open comms to your fleet. "Destroy it," you order.

The Silver-Tempest once again opens fire. Its forward guns fire simultaneously, along with its spinal cannon. The superheavy plasma bolts slam into the cruiser, and its entire frontal section disappears under a white flash. Red-hot fragments of hull and ablative armor explode outwards.

The spinal cannon's beam strikes dead center, causing the impact point to glow white-hot. For a moment, it seems as if the armor would hold. But soon, the beam penetrates, and slices clean through the hull, bisecting it.

The cruiser, now in two pieces lengthwise, float silently in the void of space.
