Rolled 3, 6 - 2 = 7

You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, second in line of succession to the throne, duchess of Tannhäuser, and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland.

Right now you are sitting in the control room of Tanhauser Manor observing the status of your interplanetary Voyage 1 space probe. It is preforming it's currently preforming it's final diagnostic before the last burn which will slingshot it around the moon and send it shooting out of earth's gravity well. There was a minor hiccup during the injection burn but everything seems to be going smoothly now.

Or at least it would be, but the Royal Astrological society sighted a foe star last night. It was confirmed by Stonefield, but tracking the lunar probe has priority while the moon is above the horizon. More disturbing is this is the last Foe star was sighted just 2 turns ago. Usually they only appear once or twice a year. In fact, the only time they ever appeared this frequently was back during the great war. The Society considers Foe stars to be ill omens, heralds of war and strife, this does not blode well considering your current ambitions on the moon or the political situation in the western isles.

It is now turn 10, you have 56 RnD points to spend, you are out of luck.

Since I can't remember if there is somthing we need to do right now, my budget suggestion is fairly simple.

Spend everything to improve Hecate to 10/12.
>>
>>26735005
We shall make the budget while we consider contacting Queen Taurus for permission to construct another Radio-Telescope on her island.

Turn 10 Budget:
54RP Titan Thruster 10/13
1RP Lunar Cart 2/5
1RP Gift of Dresses to Queen Taurus for Land Acquisition to Construct New Radio-Telescope
>>
>>26735083
The Hecate Lander has been postponed until we can get the Titan Thruster and the Seraphim Lifter constructed and a manned fly-by mission completed so that we can get a better look at the City.

So consider this a negative vote for this budget idea.
>>
Rolled 10, 1 = 11

The diagnostic is finished, the lunar probe is clear for the burn. If everything is successful it will shoot out of the earth's gravity, never to return (at least not for thousands of years)

>>26735083
Things that need to be done, in no particular order.

>Send the Voyager probe into interplanetary space (In progress)
>Get a manned flyby of the dark side of the moon for better pictures of the hidden moon base (Requires Pathfinder capsule, titan engine, and Seraph launch vehicle)
>Put a man (or woman) on the moon, (Requires pathfinder capsule, Hecate lander, two titan engines, and two seraph launch vehicles, preferably all tested safe)
>Get to the moon yourself before Ms Kenaway (probably should do all the other things first)
>>
>>26735173
>better pictures of the hidden moon base (Requires Pathfinder capsule, titan engine, and Seraph launch vehicle)
Don't you mean Trailblazer?
The Pathfinder is a Mass 3 Capsule and is not suitable for a manned mission to the Moon.
>>
>>26735115
The Titan upper stage is improved as a Mass 10 part, I believe.
>>
>>26735215
Sorry my mistake. But yes
>>26735231
is right, the titan is mass 10, so it could be improved 5 times for 50 points.
>>26735115
has 4 points unspent.
>>
>>26735115

Those should go towards safety improbvement. Does our EVA suit work well?
>>
>>26735250
How about

Turn 10 Budget:
50RP Titan Thruster 7/13
5RP Lunar Cart 4/7
1RP Gift of Dresses to Queen Taurus for Land Acquisition to Construct New Radio-Telescope
>>
>>26735115
>>26735140

Right. We can also use these other things is needed.
>>
>>26735231
Is the Titan a Mass 10 or Mass 9 item?
It's listed as a Mass 9 on the wiki, and the reliability, capacity, and Mass all seem to be mixed up.
>>
>>26735282
Wasn't the Titan already at 7/10 after the Turn 9 Budget was finished?
>>
>>26735273
Professor Hawtry assures you his extra vehicular maneuvering gear is 100% safe.

>>26735366
It's mass 1 empty, and mass 10 full. Meaning it has a capacity of 9 and a dry mass of 1. Apparently I copied the safety rating into the mass box. 7/10 is indead it's current safety rating, adding 5 points would raise it to 7/15, or 10/12 depending on how you want to spend the points.

Again I apologize for the mistake.

What shall you do this turn?
>The foe star is our primary concern, they are showing up more rapidly, we should try to contact this one.
>We should direct our lunar probe's antennas towards the moon and see if it can pick anything up.
>We shall have the Colonel give us a briefing on the current state of our lunar mission planning and go-over any possible risks.
>We shall travel east to meet with Queen Taurus.
>>
>>26735537

Definitely the probe. Is anything on the lunar surface interacting with the Foe Star in any way? That's worth knowing, even if it's just a yes or no -- it tells us if we're doing archeology, or going on a scavenging run.
>>
>>26735537
>We should direct our lunar probe's antennas towards the moon and see if it can pick anything up.
>We shall travel east to meet with Queen Taurus.
The RRC can record anything from the Foe Star while we go on this diplomatic mission.
>>
>>26735537
>We shall travel east to meet with Queen Taurus.

We've been putting this meeting off for way too long already. If the Society want to try and talk to the Foe Stars, let them.

Also, what lunar probe? Do you mean the Voyager probe, the interplanetary one? Is it going to pass close enough to the moon for a good inspection?
>>
>>26735619
Also this. The RRC are highly-trained professionals, they don't need their princess looking over their shoulder to be able to handle a space probe.
>>
>>26735626

The interplanetary probe is doing a Mun slingshot, so at least it should point the antenna that way.

>>26735640

You have a point.
>>
>>26735626
It's an interplanetary probe, but it's using the moon to slingshot and thus will pass over the far side of the moon.
>>
>>26735666
Ah, excellent. In which case I think >>26735619 sums things up perfectly.
>>
>>26735654

Derp. I mean Moon.
>>
>>26735537
>The foe star is our primary concern, they are showing up more rapidly, we should try to contact this one.
>>
Currently the probe is behind the moon and unable to receive orders, but as soon as it passes out from behind it's shadow you shall instruct it to aim it's antenna at the moon and keep it there recording until it's tapes fill up, and then turn back to broadcast to earth. You will receive the results when you return.

Who shall escort you to the eastern isles?
>Sir Perro for he is our bodyguard.
>Prince Orion for we are visiting his mother.
>Mr Luxon for he has met the queen previously.
>One of the void knights for they represent the RRC.
>Klaus for he needs a vacation.
>>
>>26735776
>Sir Perro for he is our bodyguard.
>Mr Luxon for he has met the queen previously.
We are a Princess of Midland, and it would be irresponsible of us to not have our bodyguard with us, and Mr. Luxon is essential as our guide on Easterner etiquette.
>>
>>26735776
>Sir Perro for he is our bodyguard.
>Prince Orion for we are visiting his mother.
>Mr Luxon for he has met the queen previously.

We're going to need both Prince Orion and Mr Luxon to advise us on the correct things to do and the appropriate forms of address and so on, plus we could do with Orion telling his mother about how wonderful space flight is. Sir Perro wouldn't allow us to leave him behind when going to a foreign country even if we were irresponsible enough to attempt it.
>>
>>26735872

Very much this.

Poor Klaus, not getting any rest/fun. Hmm, wait, didn't we promise him something? I can't remember exactly, but I think we hs planned a reward for him?

>We will have the Fast cruiser Mistborn carry us, her speed and firepower will deter pirates.

>>26736186
>didn't we promise him something?
That he would be allowed to research high-energy radio-reactive experiments (research nuclear reactor turbines, fusion and thermonuclear weapons).
So far, we haven't the budget to let him do his research.
>>
>>26736268

Promises are sacred. Can we take 2 rp out from somewhere else?

>>26736180

As much as it would be lovely to travel incognito, I doubt we'll be allowed to.

Not an excuse not to try, though!
>>
>>26736490
2RP is insufficient.
The test nuclear pile we have is still dangerous to operate at 10/15 and requires 5RP per Reliability point to improve.
Inventing a Radio-Reactive Turbine Power Plant, which is Minerva's dream and what Klaus would really like to work on, costs 30RP to invent and 10RP per point to improve, and starts at 5/10 Reliability.

And that's not even getting into fusion research.
>>
>>26736180
>We will hire a tramp steamer and travel incognito. We aren't sure if we can fully trust the military, and don't want to intimidate the natives with a warship.

On the Klaus matter, I think we should let him begin his experiments. Even if we need to drop some RnD points for him. It could unlock/improve a lot of stuff.
>>
>>26736697
Radio-Reactive research will delay our Moon missions by nearly half a year.
We would only have slow progress on both projects instead of finishing one within a year and the other in another.
>>
>>26736747
You charter with the Tramp Steamer Jahrtausendwende Falken and secretly set sail for the east. It was a nordic ship, build during the war (It's name commemorates the beginning of the Thousand year Reich that was planned by the Krigfuer) but was captured by Privateers from Hafenstad but kept it's name as a monument to the failure of the ambitions of the northern hordes.

You will be gone for two turns and return in time for the summer solstice. You may allocate points for turn 11 now.

Sergent Adel suggests installing an MVAC core on the Falken for 3 points. It will allow you to keep in contact via satellite.
>>
>>26736997
Turn 11 Budget:
3RP Install MVAC Core on the Falken
30RP Titan 10/15
18RP Seraphim 6/10
5RP Lunar Cart 6/10
>>
>>26736997

Hmm, no. I don't want to put a MVAC on an relatively unkown ship, unless we acquire its services. Forever.
>>
>>26736997
We can't really afford to give some random tramp steamer highly advanced military computer hardware. And considering the size of an MVAC core, it'll be a real pain to remove it when we're done with the ship.
>>
>>26737167
It would fill one of the cargo holds. It could be installed and removed easily, but would cost about 3 points of RnD to pay for the freight.
>>
>>26736997
.... Okay, um, does anyone have thoughts on budgets, apart from >>26737113? Maybe we can divert those 3RP for the MVAC core and 2RP from the Lunar Cart to improving the radio-reactive pile to 10/16?

Proposed new Turn 11 budget:
30RP Titan 10/15
18RP Seraphim 6/10
2RP Lunar Cart 5/8
5RP Radioreactive Pile 10/16
>>
>>26737742
The radioreactive pile was just a stepping stone for the Radio-Reactive Turbine, which needs to be invented. I'm not sure that this would really do much for us, and we've been warned by our staff about diverting our attention and budget in too many directions.
>>
>>26737871
The radioreactive turbine would take 30RP to invent. I was just thinking about other anon's point about giving Klaus a break. Still... point. I'm not sure where else to divert our 3RP that would otherwise go to the MVAC core... improve the Lunar Cart more, perhaps, or spend all 8 on the Trailblazer.
>>
>>26738018
Trailblazer is actually at 10/15 and can't be improved without an actual test flight.
And a test flight can't be done (at least, a real test in orbit rather than a sub-orbital) without the Seraphim.
>>
>>26738018
Trailblazer needs to be tested before it can be improved. It could however be tested in low orbit with a Cheribum. It only needs a Seraph if you want to launch the whole package with the titan Engine.

You should probably practice docking it with things as well.
>>
>>26738108
Ah, right. Well, the Hecate lander's only at 5/10, so we can spend the 8RP for a physical prototype of it to let us improve it further. I don't believe it's been prototyped yet, has it?
>>
>>26738169
I think it was, but the wiki removed the Inventory box, so I don't know if we have a physical one or not.
>>
>>26738206
You do. I probably should include a box but I remember a prototype existing.
>>
>>26738154
Could we test the Titan with a Cheribum as well?
If so, we could do that on Turn 12.

And would we need the MVAC Core on the ship in order to determine the Turn 12 Budget, or will we return by then?
>>
>>26738519
You should be home by turn 12 because that's the summer solstice. The titan could be tested on the cherubim if it had some sort of guidance unit. As it stands it has no internal Avionics.
>>
>>26738606
Could it be outfitted with a MiniVAC?
>>
>>26738686
An external housing would have to be constructed for it. Alternately it could carry a Pathfinder satellite as the guidance module.

But the matter at hand right now is really to pass a budget before you head east.
>>
>>26738718
Still voting for >>26737113
>>
>>26737167

>>26738805

i'd rather give the 3RP to Minerva and Klaus and tell them that they're for tinkering. we made a promise. it must be kept.

Confirming budget, updating wiki.

You build another core but decide against bringing it with you for operational security reasons. Your access to news will be limited while you are in the east.

With Sir Perro protecting you, and Mr Luxon and Orion as guides, you set sail on the Falken. The crew are a rough looking bunch, but highly loyal to the crown and being paid handsomely. House Cygnus, of all places is funding this trip. Apparently your mother likes the idea of you meeting Orion's mother. She probably thinks you want to marry him. You are starting to get to the age where you will need to think about that sort of thing.

Capacha:
>actnerge Steaming
>>
>>26738817
3RP might get them some equipment, but its really not what they're looking for.
I'd think that Minerva would tell us to focus on one project at a time.
>>
>>26739120
>She probably thinks you want to marry him
What a horrible thought.
>>
>>26739133

Even so; a promise is sacred. Especially from a royal. Especially to someone who would be easy to lose the loyalty of and, oh, is one of two people on Gaia who knows how to build an effing nuke.
>>
>>26739159

Weeell....

In the meantime, let's enjoy the trip. And try to listen in; we've been living in a bit of a military/aerospace bubble.

To your relief, the Falken is not accosted by pirates as it sails to the eastern islands.
Although you spend most of your time fussing about the political implications of associating with an attractive young barbarian with impressive shoulders and an aversion to shirts, he doesn't seem to notice this and is instead excited to be back at sea. He makes friends with thesailors and even volunteers to help with the crew.

How do you spend your voyage?
>We sit in the radio room listening to regular reports from Tannhauser island. Anything not classified is to be broadcast to us.
>We sleep during most of the day, but at night we stand on the decks and stargaze.
>We follow Orion's example and try to mingle with the crew as well.
>We will study eastern culture with Orion and Mr Luxon and brush up on our etiquette.

After almost a whole turn of sailing Taurus' island appears on the horizon. Like Tannhauser island it is shaped like a Diadem, but while Tannhauser is a flimsy tiara Taurus is an iron crown. A ring of mountains encircling a fertile valley of volcanic soil. Any facilities built in the center would be protected from the storms, and completely secure from any outside interference, but you would have to get the queens permission, and deal with the logistical issues of operating a base as far from civilization as possible on earth.
>>
>>26740269
>We will study eastern culture with Orion and Mr Luxon and brush up on our etiquette.

Also, the Eastern Isle is the only place on the Eastern Quadrant where a radio-telescope can be built besides on Nord land, isn't it?
>>
>>26740428
Yes, although you could also use some kind of ship based radar array, it wouldn't be nearly as nice.
>>
>>26740269
>study Eastern Culture.

Also, by marrying Orion again we unite our kingdoms, after all, and in fact.. we can request the radio telescope be our wedding present and train local students in science, thus providing us with more researchers!
>>
>>26740648
.... I think you're getting a little ahead of ourselves there.

>>26740269
>We will study eastern culture with Orion and Mr Luxon and brush up on our etiquette.
The RRC can get by fine without us listening in on everything they're doing, and we have important meetings at the end of this voyage that need to be prepared for before we have time to socialise or stargaze.
>>
>>26740269

>We follow Orion's example and try to mingle with the crew as well.

of course.
>>
>>26740269
>We sleep during most of the day, but at night we stand on the decks and stargaze.

Foe stars, now visible to the naked eye.
>>
>We will study eastern culture with Orion and Mr Luxon and brush up on our etiquette.

While you don't have enough time to learn eastern (a much more difficult language than Romantic or Archaic) you do learn a few formalities and honorifics so you at least know how to introduce yourself. At least you have two translators to help you from there.

The island does not have any natural harbors and only a few short black sand beaches, however as you approach the island you spot cooking fires up the hills and see some canoes coming out to meet you. Orion recognizes the warriors riding them as his cousins and converses with them shortly before you step into the ship's launch and are rowed ashore.

How are you dressed?

>We are wearing our frilly dress because we are here to make friends.
>We are wearing our RRC officer's uniform because we are here on business.
>We are wearing our bathing dress because we are tired of being cooped up in a boat for 9 days and want to swim ashore to get some exercise.
>>
>>26741394

We have every reason to assume when in Rome....

Let's swim for it.
>>
>>26741394
>We are wearing our RRC officer's uniform because we are here on business.
The Frilly Dress is too childish, and Queen Taurus and Easterner culture seem to respect military strength.
>>
>>26741394
Can we ask Orion or Mr Luxon for their recommendation? Would swimming ashore be a demonstration of strength, or an insult to the warriors who came out to meet us?
>>
>>26741528

How are the locals dressed?
>>
>>26741577
Silk Sarongs and loincloths dyed in bright colors. Your swimsuit wouldn't be far removed.

>>26741567
Orion laughs at the question and just dives into the water. Luxon suggests the uniform.
>>
>>26741672
>Luxon suggests the uniform.
Then we shall wear the uniform.
>>
>>26741672

Luxon can be stuffy later. Last one on shore is a rotten egg!
>>
>>26741758
You do not have the propriety or demeanor worthy of the line of Gates or Cygnus.
Even Mother knows the difference between what is and isn't acceptable.
>>
>>26741944

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. That is a very important point in any kind of negotiation.
>>
You dive into the water and swim after Orion as Luxon and Perro come ashore on the launch. Luxon is unable to follow without getting his automatics wet.

The beach is made out of a rough black sand and you see a small crowd of women and children watching you. Orion came ashore first and is talking with another woman slightly older than him, but probably too young to be the queen. You also spot Maia in the crowd hiding behind another woman. You imagine at least some of these must be Orion's sisters.

As long as the discussion remains civil and nobody forces intentionally bad options (both these were good choices) I don't see any problem with a small amount of samefagotry. Especially when the only way to ensure fair votes is to force everyone to adopt a tripcode which nobody wants.

>Wait to be introduced.
"These are my sisters, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope, Merope, and you already know Maia" Orion tells you as he points to each of his seven sisters in turn. He then introduces you in his language and most of the sisters stare at you. Perhaps they haven't seen a blond before, or maybe they have heard that you are the one putting new stars in the sky.

A nod of the head and a wave is never out of place. Can we say some variation of "Io no speak americano"?

One of the sisters laughs at Orion and says something you can't understand as your other escorts come ashore. Luxon hands you a towel and your military uniform, complete with the slide rule sword. "Orion's sister says a real celestial maiden would have black or silver hair." He translates for you. "She says you are likely a Nord spy, and that it is clear you arrived on a Nord ship rather than a sky canoe..." He pauses grimly for a few moments. "She says that the queen will probably kill you and eat your heart." He adds at the end.

Orion on the other hand does not seem to be intimidated and reacts to his sister's threats with more laughter. "Orion says that you are an honorable guest and that the ship was captured from the nords in battle by your warriors, and contains gifts for the queen." Luxon continues to translate. "This kind of boasting and threatening is common, If you show no weakness you will be trusted."

We should introduce ourselves.

And just for this, we'll try to land a secondary payload on this island and have a reply machined into a plate that' likely to survive reentry.

Rod from god bitch.

We shall muster all of the arrogance and aloofness that Father has shown us, and show this upstart what it means to threaten a Gates.

Without enough time to change you wrap the towel around your body in an imitation of the native women's sarongs, and sling the sword over your back following the group and trying your best to look aloof and arrogant and practicing your lines in your head. "Watashi Wa ōjo Lydia Tanhauser Desu?" you think that's how you would say it. No that doesn't sound right, you better just keep your mouth shut for now.

Eventualy the eldest sister cracks a smile and turns around, waving for you and Orion to follow her up the hill. From the top you have a great view of everything. The center of the island is sheltered from the wind and waves with several forested valleys, building a launchpad might be hard, but you imagine an enormous radio dish could fit in one of the valleys. At least you imagine something like that could be built, you'd have to ask your staff if that would be feasible, and the queen if she'd allow it. It would be larger than Stone-field, and completely hidden. You aren't sure if it's far north enough to be useful for observing the Foe stars however.

As you crest over the top and start to come down you approach a village with huts made out of timber and grass thatch, raised off the ground on stilts. At the far end of the village sits an imposing woman that could only be the queen. When she opens her mouth you see her teeth have been filed into points and wears a head-dress with two horns protruding from her hair giving her the impression of some kind of cross between a bull and a shark. Her tattoos also make it look like blood is dripping from her mouth, it's all very different from your mother's image as queen. While Your mother likes to play coy and hide her strengths, Orion's mother always makes sure everyone is aware just what she is capable of.

It's not that huge, but that's a good general idea.

You go over the lines in your head but can't quite bring yourself to open your mouth. The queen looks you up and down carefuly before opening her mouth once again. "Greetings daughter of Cygnus, do not be afraid, a queen only kills people who threaten her children." She says in accented Anglish. Come to think of it you don't remember anybody telling you she didn't speak your language. "And welcome back warrior of the west." She says "The queen has not forgotten your great service either."

(it's 1/2 past midnight here, but lets finish this)

We need to be as gracious and polite yet formal and unyeilding as possable. the queen is sure to test us. and we need to get to the point of our trip here.
