Predator Quest: Episode 47

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue. Your investigations have ultimately led you to Earth - where you will strike out at Weyland-Yutani's headquarters.

Having finished requisitioning the necessary gear, you turn your attention to the black, sleek, and angular hover bike mounted on a rack by the far side wall.

The quartermaster notes your interest. He walks over, and presses down on a nearby panel. The the top of the bike slides open to reveal a sealed cockpit within. "It's a stealth boarding pod," he explains. "It runs on two high output plasma engines which lets you reach a top speed of mach 2, even in atmosphere. It has an advanced cloaking system and is virtually invisible to sensors - until it's too late. It's designed to carry one warrior straight into the belly of a warship by punching through its hull via pure kinetic force. Single use only."

He turns to you. "Sounds like something you'd want?"

Do you reply:

A. "Yes. Have it loaded into my ship."
B. "No. That sounds completely insane."

"Yes. Have it loaded into my ship," you tell him. "It should prove useful for breaching the Weyland headquarters."

"But wait," you add, "I don't want this tech to end up in enemy hands. Is there a way to scuttle it easily?"

The quartermaster walks over to a rack behind him, reaches in, and takes out two plasticine wafers. He pastes them to a crevice behind the cockpit and hands you a remote. "Now there is," he tells you.

You thank him.

With that, the quartermaster escorts you back to the hangar.

You wait until the hangar crew is finished with loading your new equipment, and take your ship back to the station, where you spend the night.

You wake to the sound of alarm. You leap to your feet and put on your armor. You quickly stop a Cloud-Viper guard sprinting past, and ask him what is happening.

"Sabotage on the shipyards. Someone is trying to hijack the warships in drydock."

You let him go and quickly make your way to the observation deck. You look out across the void of space just in time to see a massive explosion flare from the clan Fire-Forge shipyard, blowing apart the clamps securing a cruiser dry dock. On the other side, you see a wing of unmarked Yautja hunting ships strafing down defense turrets guarding clan Night-Prowler's dry docks.

The station seems to be in disarray. You suddenly realize none of the defensive guns aboard the station, which should be tearing the marauders apart, are firing.

Do you:

A. Head over to the war room and attempt to find out what's happening.
B. Quickly jump into your ship and go after the marauders.
C. Run to the upper decks and find out why the plasma turrets are silent.

>>C. Run to the upper decks and find out why the plasma turrets are silent.

You immediately turn around and sprint down the corridor. You suddenly surge forward as a massive explosion thunders behind you. You glance backwards just in time to see the observation deck vaporize under a heavy plasma bolt, and the heavy bulkhead doors seal themselves to contain the breach.

You continue running, and half scramble - half climb your way into the turret fire control room. You find the room to be in shambles. Dark scorch marks on the wall and collapsed rubble tell you someone had detonated heavy explosives from the inside.

A lone, young warrior still without his dreadlocks is frantically plugging away at one of the few intact consoles. Despite his age, he's seems to be performing admirably under pressure.

"Where's your commanding officer?" You ask him.

The youngling points to the far corner. "He's... he's dead. I'm sorry, I couldn't - didn't warn him in time."

You look to where he's pointing. The body of a warrior lay crushed under a pile of rubble. You recognize him to be the chief of station security - the veteran warrior who was always the first to greet you whenever you docked in the hangar. You look around the room. Several other Cloud-Viper warriors lay on the ground, unmoving.

You turn to the young warrior. "What's the damage?"

"Our security system's compromised... some sort of... intrusion. The explosion took out the backup systems.... targeting systems are offline... and the gunners... the gunners are dead." He turns to you frantically. "What do we do, sir?" You suddenly realize you're the only seasoned warrior left in the room.

You answer:

A. "Can you get the guns on to manual targeting?"

You put a hand on his shoulder. "Listen. I need you to focus on getting the targeting systems back online. I see you have a technician's badge. For someone your age to be given a position on this station means you're either gifted or extremely competent. I'm hoping it's both."

The young Yautja returns his attention back to the console. "Yes sir. I'll work on flushing this worm out of our systems. It won't be quick... "

"Do your best," you tell him. "Now, who set off the explosives?"

"I caught his shadow.. he was cloaked. I was about to question him but the explosion took me by surprise. He's still on the station, sir!"

You leave the youngling to his work and quickly scan the room with your mask, looking for clues to lead you to the saboteur.

You spot a maintenance hatch on the far side of the wall, with a plasma scotch right above it. You trace the shot back to the barrel of the deceased security chief's plasma-caster. He must have seen the bomber enter the hatch and took a shot with his last breath.

You examine the hatch. It leads down directly to the engineering bay. Another explosion rocks the station and throws you forward.

Do you:

You run towards the nearest comm panel and access the security channel. "There's an intruder in the engineering deck, " you tell them, "same culprit who detonated the explosives in gunnery."

You suddenly hear the young warrior call out to you. You turn to him.

"Sir, I've got someone unauthorized trying to access the maneuvering engines. I'm trying to keep him out but with the system offline, I'm not sure for how long."

"What's he trying to do?"

"He's trying to de-orbit the station.... and crash it into the planet surface. I think he's trying to bring the station down on our city."

You take a deep breath. "How can we stop him?"

"I... I don't know. My control here is limited. I can keep him out for now but we'll need to hurry."

The door is sealed shut. You can clearly hear activity inside, but the door simply will not budge. On closer inspection, you find the door to be welded shut from the inside.

Do you:

You quickly paste the explosive sheet onto the door and detonate it. The thin sheet suddenly emits a white-hot flash of light and the door begins to liquefy.

You activate your targeting beams and fire two shots into the intruder inside, who drops dead.

You quickly rush over and rip off the mask. You do not recognize the saboteur, and he is free of any clan markings and have nothing you can identify him with.

You have little time to relax, however, as the station once again shudders under fire.

> A. Quickly return topside and go to the war room.

Having dealt with the intruder, you quickly make your way topside and enter the war room. The situation seems to be deteriorating.

You see the elder warrior from clan Fire-Forge busy recalling ships from patrols to defend the station. Your mentor's picture is hovering on on the main holo-screen. He's on the bridge the Cloud-Viper flagship.

He spots you. "Three-Claw. Good. Listen to me - my ship has been compromised. Someone sabotaged our weapons, and they won't be back online any time soon. Same goes for the rest of the ships in our fleet."

He shouts an order to a warrior behind him, and turns back to you. "It's an inside job. Whoever organized this knew our system inside out. They're stealing our ships, Three-Claw. We need to stop them. I don't know how, because it's a mess, and ..."

He turns his back and stares at something. "You..." he whispers. There's a sudden flash of plasma fire, and the comm link suddenly breaks.

You quickly work the controls and attempt to bring the comms back online, but there's no further response.

A. Attempt to hail all remaining ships and take stock of defenders

You bring up the star map and quickly scan through the defenders. Every ship in the vicinity seems to have had their weapon systems or targeting systems sabotaged - all except the few smaller hunter crafts which are still combat capable.

The enemy force consists of two cruisers and a handful of small craft, but if they get their hands on some of the larger ships still sitting in drydock, then the tide could turn quickly.

The Fire-Forge warrior beside you tell you that ships on near patrol have been recalled, but it will take them time to get here.

Suddenly, the Kraken-Slayer begins to move, and its weapons start to flare. Plasma bolt after plasma bolt hammer into the surprised marauders. Flame-Mantle's picture appears on the holo-screen. "Our weapon systems are online, but our engines are scrapped. We'll hold out best we can."

You watch as a swarm of smaller enemy craft begin to approach the Kraken-Slayer. You realize the warship is outnumbered and won't last long, especially with her engines dead.

Suddenly, one of the larger cruisers sitting still in dry-dock begins to move. You realize it's been hijacked. It's on an intercept course towards the station!

Do you:

A. Order all remaining defenders to engage the hijacked cruiser.
B. Order defenders to provide the Kraken-Slayer with covering fire.
C. Order all station personnel to evacuate.

"Almost there..." he responds, his tone strained. "...two more minutes..."
>>
Looks like tie between A and B
>>
>>26710368
This is a difficult choice.

>A. Order all remaining defenders to engage the hijacked cruiser.
We can afford to lose a ship, even the Kraken-Slayer. We can't afford to lose a station.

Meanwhile, let's enter our ship and rush to defend the Kraken-Slayer. I don't want us to stand idly by while Flame-Mantle and Frost-Glaive die.
>>
>>26710368
A while we go take care of B
>>
lets try to comm our team see if anyone is missing or not responding, maybe we have a traitor...
>>
>>26710388
>>A. Order all remaining defenders to engage the hijacked cruiser.

You quickly switch comms to all remaining ships, and order them to engage the hijacked cruiser post-haste.

Your order cuts clean through the chaos and commotion, and every able ship in the vicinity responds, and plots an attack course for the hijacked cruiser.

The Kraken-Slayer begins to buckle under the pressure.

You hear a voice on your personal comms. "Three-Claw. Steel-Arrow here. I'm taking off and heading to orbit. Will be there shortly."

Suddenly, another cruiser begins to shake its way free of dry dock in the distance. This one is approaching the Kraken-Slayer.

You quickly sprint towards the hangar to reach your ship - then you remember. The captured human battlecruiser would still have its weapons intact. The human autocannons may not be much use in a straight up fight, but your mentor told you he had stocked a generous pile of fission and disruptor torpedoes in storage. The thought of risking such a mission critical asset makes you hesitate, however.

Do you:

A. Head for your own ship.
B. Head for the captured human ship.
>>
>>26710450
>B. Head for the captured human ship.
I'm not letting them destroy the Kraken-Slayer.
>>
>>26710450

The weapons piled in the human ship are not only redundant (we have those on our own ship), they might also damage our own ships in by mistake.
Let's stick to our own big plasma cannons.
>>
>>26710450
B We need all the firepower we can muster at this point.
>>
>>26710450
I know I'll regret this, but.. B. The lives of our friends are more important than the success of a mission. They are as critical to our success as the stupid ship is anyway.

>>
>>26710514

>>B

You quickly make your way to the human ship. You sprint through the airlock and head over to the bridge.

The systems power up with a satisfactory hum. You scan the re-purposed control panels, and are glad to see all systems to be fully functional.

Just as you free the ship from its moorings, the station's defense turrets begin to belch plasma fire. Bolt after bolt slam into the on-coming cruiser, but it may be too late to stop the cruiser's momentum before it collides with the station.

On the other side of the battlefield, a similar hijacked cruiser is slowly accelerating towards the Kraken-Slayer, whose engines are still down.

You take stock of your missiles. There are twenty fission torpedoes and twenty disruptor torpedoes, slaved to two heavily modified human vertical launch missile racks on either side of the ship.

The first volley will be a complete surprise to the enemy, and you should make it count.

Which do you target?

A. The cruiser approaching Kraken-Slayer.
B. The cruiser approaching the station.
C. Attempt to split your salvo up and target, but you may not have enough firepower to disable both, as the racks only fire in volleys of six missiles. (DC: Medium-Hard).

>C. Attempt to split your salvo up and target, but you may not have enough firepower to disable both, as the racks only fire in volleys of six missiles. (Critical failure)

You issue targeting parameters to both missile racks - launching 3 fission torpedoes at each.

The torpedoes leap from their tubes and arc through the void of space. They find their targets and soar towards them.

The hijacked cruiser approaching the station suddenly open up with point-defense fire from multiple plasma turrets. Two torpedoes are destroyed in the hail of fire but the third slams into the cruiser's side and detonates with a blinding flash. The impact slews the cruiser sideways, but does nothing to slow it down.

You watch in horror as the massive ship collides into the station's engineering decks, its engines still burning.

On the other side of space, your other volley fares slightly better. The hijacked cruiser approaching the Kraken-Slayer only manages to take down one of the incoming missiles, and the two remaining torpedoes detonate against its side. One torpedo slams into the engine and takes it out while the other slams into its side. The cruiser still burns forward on momentum, however, and slams into the side of the Kraken-Slayer.

The Kraken-Slayer lurches hard, and debris jets forth from the wound.

You turn your attention back to the station. It's still being pushed by the cruiser. You quickly fire off a second volley of fission missiles, which shatter its engine. But the damage is done. The station lists, and to your horror, begins to de-orbit. You hear frantic calls over your comms calling for a full evacuation.

Do you:

A. Leave the station to its fate and focus on freeing the Kraken-Slayer.
B. Do your best and try to assist the station with its evacuation.
>>
>>26710800
didn't our ship have remote piloting capabilities? isn't it on the station right now?

I say we get people to evacuate and get our ship to help, or to help fight outside if it can't get to people in time
>>
>>26710800
>B. Do your best and try to assist the station with its evacuation.

Also, order remaining defenders to defend the Kraken-Slayer. The situation is still salvageable.
>>
>>26710800
how the fuck are we going to get Dads ship off the station now, we better not fucking lose it, it has those awesome ancient guns
>>
>>26710822
seconding this, those who helped to defend the station should defend the Kraken-Slayer, it can still be saved, but we should focus on getting people and our ship off the station, maybe that technician can fly it?
>>
>>26710833
We should call the technician and tell him to enter our vessel taking as many Yautja as he can.
>>
>>26710822
Seconding this. Got to try and make the best of a bad situation.

Is this what is feels like to be Commander Adama?
>>
>>26710850
That's a good idea. Our ship has a pretty big cargo hold if I remember correctly.
>>
>>26710850
>>26710885
Yes. I think we should do this if possible.
>>
>>26710884
probably, except his son if on the kraken slayer, and his adopted daughter is on the station

>B Do your best and try to assist the station with its evacuation.

You quickly order all remaining combat-capable ships to fend off the marauders and cover the Kraken-Slayer.

You quickly jump on the comms. You hear a frantic voice, likely belonging to the technician, calling out. "We're hit. We're hit. We're destabilized. Power's gone. Engineering deck is gone. We're... by the ancients, we're going to crash into the surface!"

You muster an authoritative tone and attempt to calm him down.

"How many survivors?"

"I don't know. I don't know. Thirty? Thirty five? There are... right. I know there are seven trapped in the armory. We can't get to them... too much debris! I can't... The engineering deck is gone! There's no power."

Do you:

A. Order him to load what survivors he can into your ship and take off. Worry about those who are stranded later.
B. Order him to direct all survivors to the hangar and find a way to free stranded survivors in the armory.
>>
>>26710940
>A. Order him to load what survivors he can into your ship and take off. Worry about those who are stranded later.
Leadership requires making hard choices. The dead shall be avenged.
>>
>>26710940
A

also, how about we warn the peopl on the surface that our space station is about to become a ground station? I would rather not have our entire fucking city, family, friends, librarian, all pancaked by it, I'm betting they could shoot it down, or at least into smaller parts
>>
>>26710940
A.
We're left with no choice but to count the living now.
>>
>>26710940
A We have to focus on the ones we can save.
>>
>>26710940
please don't land on our city, please don't land on our city
>>

>>26710964
>>A.

"Leave them for now," you order. "We'll come back for them if we can. Listen to me carefully. I have a ship sitting in the hanger. Get everyone you can to that ship and take off."

"Right. Yes. sir. I'll do that. Sir..." he gasps, as he begins to sprint. "We're going to come down hard."

"Where? What's the station's trajectory? Where's it going to hit?"

There's a slight pause. "Clan Night-Prowler city, sir." He pauses, and grows somber. "That's ten million lives."

You breath deeply. "Nothing you can do now, lad. Get our people off the station."

Suddenly, your sensors flare with activity. Several enemy crafts are heading your way.

Do you:

A. Attempt to hold your ground and fend them off while the station evacuates.
B. Move forward and lead them away from the evacuation.
>>
>>26710964
yeah, warning leadership ground wise would be good right about now, I'm sure cloud-viper has some surface to orbit guns it could use to push the station away or break it up, if anything, let it fall on night-star territory
>>
>>26711063
B
>>
>>26711063
B.
Just keep the station out of their line of fire while they're peppering us with shots.
>>
>>26711063
>A. Attempt to hold your ground and fend them off while the station evacuates.
Not sure why they wouldn't just pass us if the station is their goal.
>>
>>26711063
A Also holy shit call somebody on the ground and make sure they are aware that the station is on a collision course with a major population center.
>>
>>26711063
>A. Attempt to hold your ground and fend them off while the station evacuates.
>>
In a way, the conspirators were right. Ten million lives. If that doesn't galvanize the Empire nothing will.

But why? All this does is motivate us further to destroy the conspirators. We already know the humans can't be behind this. They wanted to galvanize us into war with earth, not civil war.

Unless inner instability is their real goal.
>>
>>26711063
A
HOLD THE LINE AT ALL COSTS
>>
>>26711140
Ebon-Claw did mention that war was coming.
Not that he specified whether it was a war against the humans or a civil war... or both at the same time.
>>
>>26711165
I'm just wondering whether the whole 'war with humans' is just a pretext, something to hide their real motivations. A coup?

Hell, did we ever figure out what info was on Ebon-Claw's wrist-computer?
>>
>>26711191
Well it makes sense that they would attack us now. We were about to go on a mission to destroy the research of the stolen tech they supplied to the humans.

>> A. Attempt to hold your ground and fend them off while the station evacuates.

You hold your position by the station and loose another volley of fission and disruptor torpedoes. Two are caught in the ensuing explosion, but more are coming. One of them begins to strafe you with plasma fire. Your starboard missile rack goes up in flames. A hail of fire hammer into your ship's side as more ships stitch you with fire. Suddenly, a vessel bursts forth from the station hangar and begins to open fire on the enemy ships. It's the survivors. They've made it.

You glance at the station. It's been captured by the planet's gravity field and is rapidly accelerating towards the planet. You quickly open up a comms link to surface command and give the ominous warning.

Suddenly, a battleship accelerates towards you. It's the Striking-Asp, flagship of the Cloud-Viper fleet. It maneuvers underneath the station and surges upwards, slamming into the belly of the station. Its engines strain against the planet's gravitational flow, and just as it seems to put the station back in orbit, several enemy craft lurch and loose a volley of torpedoes, which slam into the Striking-Asp's engine section. The battleship's engines flare one last time, and dies. You see escape shuttles launching from the flagship.

>>

>>26711191
It makes sense. The Empire has grown complacent. Our fighting ability has atrophied.

>>26711218
I don't think it's about that. Very few people knew and I don't think that warrants 10 million deaths. If it was just about us they could have simply informed the humans about us.
>>
>>26711232
goddamn it, our mentor was on that, lets just hope he is in one of those escape shuttles or we will burn these bad bloods to ash and bones
>>
>>26711232
Does our ship have escape pods?

<continued>

Your mentor's picture appears on your holo-screen. He is injured. You notice his right leg has become a mess of fluorescent blood. He holds his combi-stick in one hand, and is surrounded by bodies.

He looks at you, and bares his fangs. "Death-Gifter... is... was... alive. Tried to kill me..." he tells you, as he lifts a severed head to face the screen. You recognize the face clearly. It's Death-Gifter."

He looks at you, and clicks with amusement. You suddenly detect a massive surge in the battleship's powerplants.

"What are you doing?" you ask, with alarm.

"Saving ten million lives." He stares hard at you "Listen pup, I..." he pauses for a moment, searching for words. But none come. "Well. I've my best to teach you honor, and it looks like my best... was pretty good."

He presses a series of buttons on the cockpit, and turns to you. "You should get clear. I'm overloading my powerplant."

Do you:

A. Tell him to hang on; you're coming to get him out.
B. Tell him to stop, and that there must be a better way.
C. Order all nearby ships to pull away from the station.

also, tell his bitch ass to get to an escape pod and set a delayed coutndown
>>

B.
Can we try to remote detonate the station's energy supply or something first?
>>
>>26711232
Though we probably won't be able to get another one, we could load the 'hover bike' with a fusion torpedo, launch that into the station, and hopefully disintegrate it before it enters lower atmosphere. After the evacuation is complete, of course.

Won't be the cleanest, but I think it's better than having the whole thing crash down on a city in one big chunk.
>>
>>26711260
C.
Grimly nod, thank him once more for all that he has taught us, and for the love of god, don't ruin this man's sacrifice with tears and emotion. He is dying an honorable death here.

You hail all nearby friendly ships. "Get clear of the station!" you order.

You turn back to the holo-screen. "Jackal... Get to an escape shuttle. You can set it to overload on a timer."

He looks down, and shows you his right leg. It's been burned off entirely by a plasma shot. "No time, pup. Have to blow this thing before it gets any further, or the debris won't have time to burn up. Go. You've got a battle to fight."

You look away for a moment, then snap back and salute him grimly. You gun your own throttle and speed away from the falling station.

Behind you, there is a sudden flash of light, and you feel like you've lost a father for the second time in your life.
