You extend a thin tendril to the surface.

For a moment, you're not exactly sure what you're looking at.

A white mask floats in the center of...the creature? The mask is decidedly human, but the body is not. It is shadowy, inky...now that you think about it, rather like you.

And then you see them. Skulls, faces. Warped head, floating in the mass. Silent screams of shadow.

You recoil in disgust. It seems that the wind mages weren't the only ones desperate enough to use blood magic - the Black Hand left this monstrosity behind.

Its gaze finds your tendil, and its eyes - if it actually has eyes - lock onto your form at the bottom of the lake. A sphere of concentrated darkness begins to collect in front of it.

It's isn't a familiar darkness. It's corrupted. But not like the demonic darkness you've felt before - that's just empty, devoid of something. This has something extra mixed in. You have a strong feeling you know exactly what that is.

The orb of shadow fires.

It's damn fast, but you're faster. You slip through the water like it's air.

The orb eats away at the water, leaving a hole, and keeps going, and going, through the muddy bottom of the lake, and down, boring a hole further than you can see into the bottom of the island.

Well. You don't want to be hit by that.

You glance back, and you're stunned by what you see.

You'd think the water would collapse back, sealing up where the orb ate it - but it isn't. The water hangs open, as if turned to gel. And bits of shadow eat at it, devouring more, bit by bit, like a virus chewing up a lake.

You really don't want to be hit by that.

The monster on the lake shore makes no move to come after you.

And then it's behind you, standing on the lake bottom.

You knew it would do that. You're already turning, and your limb slams into its side - and vanishes through it without contact. Frustrated, you swim away, taking some distance - and your arm hurts like hell. It feels like acid is clinging to your skin, burning through your flesh. You wring it back and forward, and after a few moments, the sensation stops.

A shadowy monstrosity born out of the sacrificed souls of the Black Hand seems like about the most acceptable Erasure target we've come across to date.

Not to say we should do that now, necessarily, but we should probably keep it available.

We have 5 mana and physical attacks seem to do basically nothing to it.

We've considered that Nightflare might disrupt a Lich's phylactery before, so perhaps it could be used against a different kind of Blood Magic as well?

Other option is to try and telepathically communicate with the 700-year-old insane souls of an already-deranged cult of Erebus, but I don't see that going terribly smoothly.

This thing could potentially have a focus as well. Maybe the conspicuous mask being carried around inside the otherwise amorphous shadow?

Try focusing an attack on that point before dismissing physical attacks as ineffective, at least.

I say Shadow Beam because is precise and we will be certain to hit him in the mask and BTW even us aren't immune to shadow magic.

You swim rapidly, and quickly distance yourself from the monster. The black orbs zip through the water around you, eating away at your environment, but you're able to dodge most of them.

To your surprise, the creature blinks past you, again firing. One of the orbs scrapes you, taking out a chunk of shadow. The burning acid hurts far more than you'd think. You grit through the pain and keep swimming. It fades after a short time, your aura working to repel the shadow magic.

This time, it doesn't follow you, and you quickly gain enough distance to put it out of your normal sensory range. You're not sure what was motivating it in the first place. Maybe it's mindless. Maybe you just got lucky. In either case, the water of the lake swiftly repairs your wound.

You surface at the opposite end of the lake.

The forest looms in front of you. You're trying to decide on a direction when a break in the sky catches your attention. The blue is suddenly twisting, transforming into a swirling grey mass - and an airship flies through the wall.

It's a smoking wreck. Fire rages on the upper deck. Pieces of the hull are separating from the main body, creating a sight like a falling meteor storm. You can hear the plaintiff whining of the ship's thrusters as it tries to slow its descent all the way from here. It slams into the ground in the middle of the forest, where the slope rises up a small mountain.

You stare for a moment, shocked. Flint. Auriel. Ila. Adavan.

Abigail!

Just as you're about to start forward, you hear a roar as loud as an airship's engine - and the biggest dragon you've ever laid eyes on takes to the air, rising up out of the castle in the middle of the islands. It sweeps toward the wreckage.

You need to get over there, fast.
