"Gghhh."

I'm woken up by the ripping pain coursing through my body. Along with the discomfort, I start to remember what happened. A fight with a monster. My grimoire exploded because of that girl. I was sucked through the summon circle and then ended up here. "I have to move." I press my hand against the ground.

Wait a second.

There's no solid ground. What I touch is hot sand. I lift my head up to see a valley of dunes in front of me. "A desert." I struggle to get to my feet.

My legs shake. Even though I'm hurt, I force myself to stand. I know that if I lie there and do nothing the heat will be the death of me. I do my best to focus on moving forward. If I think about the pain, if I start to get worried then that is the end of that. My life is over.

"Rai-" I try to call out but the scathing hot air causes me to gag. "Ahh." I take off my cloak to place it around my mouth. A hot wind blows my way which causes me to squint my eyes.

>Continue down into the valley of sand the best I can.
>Maybe I still have the Grimoire. If I do, maybe I can try something to make this voyage just a bit easier.
>I'll continue to call out for Raid. Hopefully she landed somewhere nearby.

"Raid." I force my muscles. The pain turns to a deep soreness. I close my eyes but I keep on walking. "RAID!" There is no response.

The summon circle dumped the two of us out in the same area. There's no such thing as 'displacement' when it comes to summoning. You go from Point A to Point B or vice versa. There is no other route open because it's a straight shoot. Now when you get to where you're being summoned to, there is such thing as accuracy. I may have ended up in this desert but Raid may be 50, 100 miles away from me. Just thinking about that makes me feel scared.

"RAID!" I finally fall to my knees. "R-raid." I clench both hands full of sand. The frustration makes tears come to my eyes.

Mentally I call out to Raid. I try to throw out some spells using this ability as a 'Recorder' but nothing comes out. A single drop of magic flows from my finger tips but it isn't enough. That explosion back then must have done something to my powers and the book. That I'm sure of.

I should check the Akashic Grimoire. I know something happened to it before being tossed into the red summon circle. I open up the white-silver tome to examine the insides. "W...what?"

What happened here?

Information regarding other spells, other magical practices and most important of all, summoning, are gone. I flip through the pages. One by one I notice that information has been either burned off or stolen. "That white light."

When the explosion happened, right after Kagutsuchi was bisected, must have been when it happened. That's why I experienced pain. I was connected to the book. "This just keeps getting harder, doesn't it." tears start to well up in my eyes. Raid is gone, I'm powerless and in the middle of a desert.

I didn't even get a chance to 'live my own life' like Raid said to. I guess I'm a failure as a Summoner and a friend.

"I'm sorry... Raid." I end up falling onto the ground with my knees digging into the sand.

Just then I hear a churning sound. It starts grows stronger with each passing second.

>It may be some kind of sand bandit so I should try and hide myself somewhere.
>Anyone finding me is good. Better than dying out here alone.

That sound is feet crushing sand. Someone is moving up the opposite side of the sand hill. "Huff, huff." I force myself up to my feet and I roll onto the other side, hopefully out of sight. Whoever this person is - they don't look friendly to me. They have goggles on, a large cloak to protect them from the blowing winds. "Maybe I could..." I start to think about smashing her with the book to rob her.

No. No, what are you thinking, Itonami? You don't have to do that. You'll be able to last a full day before having to resort to primal instinct. Think logically.

What should you do here?

"H-hey." I move up from the ground to stop the cloaked figure. "Hey!" I speak up to make sure they hear me.

"Eh...?" the person looks at me through their goggles. I can't even tell what color their eyes are because the goggles are covered in dust.

Flop.

They fall to the ground exhausted. Wait, now that I think about it, why would this person be in any better a condition than me? They've been walking through the desert while I was just dumped here.

"Hey, wait a second!" I scramble over to help them. "Wake up, come on."

"Aaahhh." she moans before getting herself up. "Mmmmm... oh... uh, hello." she removes her goggles.

"Hello."

The conversation already starts out awkward.

>ALRIGHT, I'm Itonami Juritsu. Pleasure to meet you. Was dumped here by a magic summon circle. Have you seen a girl with wolf ears and a tail, a large crystalline sword? Would be a major help.

I have to tak eeverything slow. Just start by asking her name. "Uh, what's your name?"

"Ahhh... Arika. Yumemiya Arika. What's your name?" she is oddly abrasive when she's speaking to someone she's just met.

"My name is Itonami. Itonami Juritsu. It's nice to meet you, Arika."

"Itonami-chan?" the girl does her best to speak through the fatigue.

"Yes, I guess that's fine." as I'm about to continue talking, I hear something in the distance? What is that, an engine? I turn to see it in the distance. A large ship that traces across the sand with relative ease. on top of that, there are people aboard. "I'm not lost after all!"

"Eh?" I hear the girl called Arika mumble. "Huh? Hey... HEY! Wait up! Come on, help me!" seems the reality of the situation finally hit her.

Alright, I have to get a start for this. "Come on!" I run as fast as I can down the sand dune and after the moving ship. "Huff." the pain from before won't let me sprint at fuel speed. Instead of going at it like a mad woman, I slow down to a nice jog.

"HEY!" Arika bolts right past me, leaving me in the dust.

This is what I get for not being as athletic as Raid and depending on magic. Faster Itonami. Run. Run. Run! "AHhhh!" Focus on your magic. Focus on the remnant of the Grimoire. Focus on the river of magic that flows through your body.

My hair changes from black to white. The wings of blue extend out from my back. I flap them once to get off the ground. My speed in the air is enough to keep up with the running sand bandit girl. "Grab my hand we'll make better time if we-" the same white shock from before. It isn't as violent as last time but it breaks my concentration. The wings fade in and out. I maintain flight despite that.

"Whoa... amazing!" is all she says to the display. "Is that magic?!" her voice is enough to make me cringe. The pain, her voice, it all just pushes my concentration over the edge. With that the wings vanish. "Hey, Itonami-chan, are you alright?" what is with this girl? She was just scraping along the ground earlier and now she's hyped up.

Oh well. It doesn't matter, I guess. I won't be awake to complain about it anytime soon.

Forcing that magic out of the grimoire and my body causes me to close my eyes. Soon I'm completely enveloped by the dark

I'm in the black again but this time I don't dream of others. This time I dream of my own life, my memories. I forget about the hot desert, the girl I had just met and swim through the confines of my own mind.

What was my life like? What was the world like before all of this happened?

My home, a planet called Earth. A place where Espers and Magic users exist. The town I lived in was in the country of Japan. Why was that? My family was originally European but they moved to Japan. The reason is still unknown to me. Maybe it was to separate themselves from the other Magus? Maybe it was some need to be an outlier. To become special. I don't think that would be needed since we're the only ones who can access the Akashic Grimoire.

'The only ones?' That sounds contrived now that I think about it.

"A need to be special in a world full of the same thing. My family is pretty petty, then." I muse to myself as I sink further into the abyss.

The Akashic Grimoire. A book that my ancestors put everything into. Their abilities as Recorders allow them to see other worlds and people. With that information, they put it into the book. I'm just next in the line so I'm nothing special. Nothing special at all.

"Hah, why am I thinking of this now? It's not like I'm going to die or anything."

Raid told me to get some sleep. I know I'm not dead. I know that so I'll continue to rest.

...

This is really nice, actually. No more dreams and no more nightmares. Just darkness everywhere. A peaceful silence. No screaming, no pain, no nothing. I wonder - is this what death is like? I can't tell how much time has passed since I passed out in the desert.

Maybe a few hours? A few days? Not like it matters now. As long as I can finally rest it's fine.

"...nami... p..."

I think I hear someone calling my name.

"Itona... up."

It's becoming clearer.

"Itonami-chan! Wake UP!"

That girl's voice again.

"Gghhh."

I should see what actually happened while I was unconcious. That's the next thing to do after waking up after all. I look around to see children playing, adults walking around on the platform above a series of steps nearby. I then turn to see Arika talking to some strange people.

"It was an accident. An unfortunate accident, Neena."

So the girl with black hair right there is Nina. Since I recognize the mans voice, I'm going to guess that's her 'father'. He's a tall guy with blonde hair, gold eyes and he's wearing a blue suit. Seems like an official of some kind.

"A really unfortunate accident, Father!" she pleads to her Dad. I see Arika approach them to talk. I grab my hat that seems to have fallen off the bench and place it on my head.

So now how should I proceed from here?

Best way to show gratitude is to thank Arika directly. I don't know what she did but I can guess. She carried me when my magic gave out. "Um... well..." Arika is trying to talk to the two of them. That Nina girl gives her a dismissive glare but she continues to talk. "Oh, right! Here! And thank you for the juice, Neena-chan!" she presents 'Neena' with a folded teal cloth. Nina grabs it quickly out of Arika's hand before doing an about-face away from her.

"Nina." she firmly corrects. Arika tilts her head a little to the side. "It's Nina! Only my father can call me Neena!" wow, so it's already going to be difficult to talk to her. Making a note of that for future reference.

"Father?" Arika questions it and ends up walking over to the blonde man. "Why's that?"

"I dunno." he replies casually.

"Major!" as I make my way over another man walks onto the scene. "I take it your trip to your home country went well." now I'm guessing political affairs. The longer I stand here, the more I feel like not getting involved with any of this.

[1/2]
>>
"Nina. Thanks for coming to see me." the father thanks the daughter before looking to Arika. "And you... now I know what you remind me of-"

"Excuse me." I interrupt.

Eyes fall on me. Arika is the first to realize who I am. "Itonami-chan. You're awake already?"

"I am. Oh, sorry, let me introduce myself. I'm Itonami. Itonami Juritsu. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that you were the one that placed me out here?" I point to Nina's father.

"Well you and Arinko both." Arinko? Doesn't that mean 'antsy'?

"Arinko...?" Arika catches it. "My name is Arika! Yumemiya Arika!"

It doesn't take much for Arika to get riled up, now does it?

"In that case, I'm Sergay Wang, an officer at the Embassy of the Duchy of Artai."

"Never heard of it." a hand falls on my chin.

He blinks a few times, dismisses it then waves to the three of us. The guy that joined up on the conversation and Sergay Wang leave. "Kehehe." my juvenile mind can't help but laugh at the play on the name. Better than 'antsy', that's for sure.

I have to talk with Arika about her plans and see if they match up with mine. It'd be better to look for Raid with help then without. "Excuse me, Arika." I do my best to be cordial.

"Eh? What's wrong?"

"I'm looking for a friend of mine. She has gold eyes, wolven ears and a tail. Also likes to carry around a large crystalline sword."

"Wolf ears and a tail..." she drifts off into thought after I describe Raid.

"I imagine it's not exactly what you're thinking."

"Hm, alright! Someone like that should be easy to find." she nods. "But can you help me look for my mother?"

"If we're going the same way, the least you could do is remain quiet." Nina says that without turning around.

"Alright, I'll stop laughing. Sorry." I offer a sincere apology. The next minute Arika lets out a loud gasp before running up the stairs. The first thing I see is a train pull in to allow passengers to come aboard.

"Awesome!" as soon as it stops, the excited girl goes over to touch the window. "Wow... Hey, is this..." Nina walks toward the entrance of the train. I enter the train myself. "Arika, why do you want to find your Mom so much?" I ask what I've been wondering for a little while. "What did she do exactly?"

"Hm, the reason why?" Arika places a finger on her cheek and starts to contemplate.

"Well if that's too hard, just answer the second question."

"I don't know much about her... but what I do know was that she served as an Otome."

"An Otome?" my question seems to catch Nina off guard more so than Arika. Wait a second. Arika doesn't know about her own mother? ... Alright, that's a subject I don't feel the need to poke at. "Alright, if she served as an 'Otome', where are you going to find her?"

"I was hoping to find something at Garderobe." Arika looks up at the ceiling then looks straight out the window when we pass over a city. "... Awesome!!!" she admires a castle as we pass by it. She pesters Nina for questions and she says something about a coronation ceremony for crowning the new princess. It doesn't interest me in the least. I'm too busy looking out the window feeling for Raid.

There's a faint 'something' coming from Arika. It wasn't noticable before due to exhaustion but I really feel it now. Instead of asking what that is, I turn up some conversation for Nina.

"Why are you so mean to Arika?" I don't care enough about tact to work the question into a conversation. I just ask.

"Because she keeps getting in the way." I know she meant to include ME in that statement.

"Is there some place you have to be THAT badly?"

"Yes." she looks away as the train comes to a stop, "I have to get before curfew." after that she departs from the train and starts walking down the steps into the street below.

Arika's cries of 'amazing' and 'whoa' stop. She's the second to walk out of the train. I follow her while thinking of what to do next. I really don't intend to get too involved here. My objectives are to find Raid and find someway to get us back home. Now I have to help Arika find her Mom and she said she would help me find Raid too. So I'm stuck with her for now.

Or am I? Maybe if Nina knows where this Garderobe school is, Nina can take Arika off my hands.

Guys we made a promise, do you want to make Itonami come off as a jerk? That's now how you get allies.

No, I said I would help Arika so I should stick with her. Multiple eyes and ears are better than just one pair of each. Plus I can already feel my connection to Raid getting stronger.

I know for a fact she's in this city.

"Hey Nina, you know where Garderobe is? If so, please take us there."

"I do but why two want to go there?" did she not listen to what we were saying?

"Arika's looking for her mother." I point to Arika, "Who served as an Otome. I'm just asking for her."

"Nina-chan!" my 'comrade' comes in for a double blow. "Can you please take me there. If I become an Otome then..."

"Impossible." she shakes her head then looks further down the road.

"Why's that?" I ask before Arika has a chance to say anything.

"You don't know anything, do you?"

"I know plenty. Probably more than you about anything not Otome."

"Tch, if you know so much then walk there yourself."

"Okay, that was poor choice of words on my part. Please, Nina, lead us to the school."

"I refuse. You two don't know the first thing about Otomes."

"You're right, I don't but Arika seems to."

Nina hesitates then looks to the newcomer to the Modern age, "Where are you from?"

"Galelia." she answers up front.

"I don't know what far-off place that is but it's clear that-"

"YOU love making assumptions." I shoot my mouth off.

...

The two of us exchange glances and the conversation dies off after that. Well, this was a waste of my time. Now the plan is to reconcile with Nina and get Arika to her mother. Hopefully... hopefully something doesn't go wrong.

[END OF EPISODE 2]

More like Tsubasa Mahou Shoujo Chronicle.

Or Kingdom Magica.
