As the strange girl fades into the mists, you feel a change in the atmosphere. The air is thinner, here, and the mists lighter. You take a deep breath in and catch the scent of burning flesh and acrid smoke.

"We're close," your mount informs you in a voice like wind through tree boughs. "The time to transition is close. Prepare yourself."

You close your hand around the secondary marking totem. It's going to be a bumper ride out than it was in, that much you can feel.. The currents of spiritual energy soaking the air will fight to keep you in your proper place. Once a spirit, always a spirit.

You take a deep breath in through your nose and focus. Time to face the wasteland.

You focus on the totem clasped in your hand, feeling its anchoring sensation to the material plane. A bit of dirt from the threshold of your workshop, a bit of hearth ash, and a pinch of salt is all you need to keep you connected to your home plane. You crack the totem like a vial of smelling salts, inhaling the scent of home. The earthy smell fills your lungs, and within you they grow leaden.

A rough jolt nearly takes you from the back of the drake. Tendrils of mist wrap your arms and legs. You shake them off with a spiritual sigh, a wind scattering the mists to the corners of the world.

You inhale again, and around you the mists part.

You land hard on a rocky incline. Sliding down the hill, stones cutting into your form, you flail a hand out and grab an out-cropping, halting your descent. The Razor Wing tumble past you, and your hand flashes out to grasp it.

Your head aches.

You survey the scene below you with wide eyes. You stand at the far edge of the Ikrins, and below you lies hell.

Charred stumps of trees and cracked earth stretch as far as the eye can see. The ground itself weeps smoke like a mangled corpse, and the air is filled with ash and greasy soot. The land is cracked, blasted and barren. From within the deep crags, molten colors dance with hellish glee, coloring the landscape red and black and sickly yellow.

You suppress a gag. The air here is devoid of spiritual power. The very soul has been burned out of this plain.

From your vantage point on high you can see groups of strange beasts roving the wasteland. Twisted, misshapen humanoids with tusks on their faces and a long, loping gait.

>How will you descend?
>>
>>26623736
As stealthily as possible.
>>
>>26623736
Swap Cordia to the boots, use their granted stability on earthen materials to let us climb down slowly. Edge of Dawn and Cloudwalker's Stride are both pretty bright. This way keeps attention off of us. At the very least we won't be glowing.

>>
Seeing a rocky descent in your future, you decide to make a quick binding swap. You take the Crystal Spear focus from your boots and Cordia from your gloves, placing your Earth Warden into your boots. The knee-high greaves of rock creep up your legs, and at once you feel more solid on your feet.

Having nowhere else to put the unwieldy crystal spear, you decide to bind it into your gloves for safe-keeping.

A flash of light reveals a pair of sky-blue gloves garbing your hands, the knuckles studded with tortoise-shell patterns of deep blue crystal. They feel as though they weigh nothing at all, and when you clench your fist you see an arc of energy play between the studs.

>[Binding Complete: Shock and Awe. Produces an electrical charge with a clenched fist. ]

Thus prepared, you activate your Shroud and begin your descent.

The clouds of black hazing the atmosphere quickly become your allies as your body is transmuted into shadow and mist. Golem Rising leaves a trail of churned ash in your wake as you slide from boulder to boulder, making your descent without so much as turning a tusked head in your direction. Soon enough you reach the base of the cliffs, your insubstantial form pressed firmly into the shadow of a massive granite boulder.

Here at ground level, below the smog, you can see further patrols of the grotesque tusked beings. They carry torches and curved blades, their yellowed eyes roving the landscape with a dull, bestial intelligence.

Your grip on Modi Magni tightens. There are a -lot- of patrols around this area.

Perhaps you were expected.

If your visitor in the mist was to be believed, the Tyrant is expecting you. Perhaps, then, these beasts could lead you to him.

Then again, perhaps you don't want to make him aware of your arrival just yet.

>>
>>26624104
Avoidance. Let's scope this land out and see for ourselves what damage has been done here, then we'll consider hearing the Tyrant's take on it. If it is the Tyrant that sent the messenger. I'm starting to wonder if there might be two spirits responsible for what's happened here, not one. Like the invader is just trying to get away from the Tyrant, after it caused so much devastation.
>>
>>26624104
Continue sneaking. Worst case scenario they're expecting us and hostile; sneaking pays.

I suppose even if they aren't hostile it would be a profitable venture to just turn up out of nowhere. Make them reevaluate what we might be able to do and what we can accomplish.
>>
No, you decide. Far better for you to proceed without making waves, whatever this Tyrant's intentions. You stick low to the ground, your shadowy guise making you as a cloud's shadow as you drift out of the boulder's cool cloak. Even in your misty form, stealth will be a difficult option. There is a distinct lack of debris to hide behind on the blasted plains, and the tusked creatures look to have vigilant eyes. You could climb into the cracks and attempt to navigate underground, but who knows what horrors await in that molten chamber?

This is going to be a test of your skill.

Agreed. Definitely an avoidance mission.

Whisper to Modi. "I'm going to sneak up on the Tyrant and plant you deep within his chest. If possible, try not to kill him too quickly. I want to bind him into the anvil back at the village so he can spend the next eternity being beaten with a hammer. Maybe it'll teach him the value of building, rather than destroying. But I doubt it."
>>
Rolled 61

>>26624392
Underground. Dangerous, but any single monster we encounter isn't going to be a problem. The problem is being spotted and getting the entire wasteland down on our ass. Besides, we're good with Earth. Also, I kind of want to find something awesome to bind here, and the monsters dwelling within fiery pits have to be pretty cool.
>>
Rolled 80

>>26624432
agreed. Our earth powers give us a definite advantage there, if absolutely necessary.
>>
>>26624413
Might be difficult. The Tyrant is a free spirit, not a beast. We can't do the Feral Binding on him. We haven't seen many free spirits being bound, but it seems you need both symbolically appropriate materials and either the spirit's consent or force of will proportional to its power. And anyway, the Lord Restrained promised us a boon if we killed the Iron Tyrant. Probably better in the long run than any focus we could get from him.

>>
You cast a wary eye toward the closest pit. If you're to get any deeper into this territory without bringing down the entire wasteland on your head, you're going to need to take a slightly less trafficked route. You slip into the nearest crag, negotiating the handholds you can find until you hit the bottom.

Rather, where the bottom should be. Below you, a cavern of fire and smoke expands some eighty meters in every direction. Liquid fire pours through the cavern floor in sluggish rivers, and strange spirits of iron and earth dip chunks of raw ore into the rivers. Vast clanking monstrosities of metal churn out columns of ash, and tusked workers on stone platforms grunt to one another in a guttural language.

You drop onto an unoccupied platform, scoping out an exit on the far side of the platform. A track of mine-cart rails lead deeper to the north.

>>
>>26624601
An iron/fire spirit could help us immensely if we could seclude one out of earshot.
>>
>>26624632
Ooh, that's a neat idea. Maybe not do it for the entire trip, but if we see anyone coming hiding on the ceiling could be a good way to avoid them.

We should also summon Tryd to get his opinion on this. He's a spirit of soot, and he has pretty good senses for spiritual energy. He might be able to see something we can't.
>>
>>26624601
Okay, so. There was a very specific procedure we were supposed to follow in order to defeat the Iron Tyrant. Let me go look that up.
>>
>"The Iron Tyrant is a corrupt spirit, forged of chaos and quenched in the blood of a thousand thousand innocents. To stop it, you must utterly destroy it. Bury the Demon Pits, extinguish the Fellfire, and tear down its corrupt body, plate by plate. Should you accomplish these tasks, in the order I have given them to you, you will be capable. Whether you will be -successful- lies entirely on your wits. You must act, and act soon. The mountains hold little danger for its ilk now."

So this seems like a likely area to find either the Fellfire or the Demon Pits.
>>
>>26624719
Bury the Demon Pits, extinguish the Fellfire, tear down the plates of its corrupted body. So is this a Demon Pit, or just a pit?
>>
>>26624482
True. We'll just plant Modi deep and let him feast.
>>
You lay low to the stone platform, scanning the room intermittently. The iron spirits seem to be processing something in those screaming metal monstrosities, and the tusked creatures look to be overseeing the process. Down in the pit, none of them seem too interested in their surroundings. Sticking close to the stone, you glide silently across the walls, holding your breath as you inch toward the minecart shaft.

The iron spirits resemble humanoids, you see, though at their waist they split into a tri-pod of spidery legs. They lack faces, and you wonder if they're truly sentient things or simple homonculi crafted to do a repetitive job.

You freeze as one of the tusked creatures looks around casually. Did he see you?

>>
You hold every muscle still and narrow your eyes to dim the red glow as the creature's gaze sweeps the area. For a moment you think it's spotted you before it passes you over, staring at a hanging stalactite for a moment before turning back to its work. You keep that held breath for later, continuing your slow churn across the wall. In a moment you drop down to the shaft, hanging from the roof as you make your way down.

The sound of metal ringing against metal alerts you that a cart may be coming down the tracks.

You press yourself as flat as you can against the cavern roof, waiting as the patient metal heartbeats of the minecart roll slowly closer. A light rounds an unseen corner, and you can see one of the strange faceless iron spirits riding in the crude cart, surrounded on all sides by rough chunks of glittering stone.

If you were going to examine one of these things alone, now would be the time to do it. Of course, you could simply let it go. You doubt it has the intelligence to spot you unless interacted with. It's all a question of intelligence gathered versus risk of discovery. You don't know how far you are from any of your objectives. You could be days of travel from the Tyrant's domain, and you don't even know if this cavern connects to where you need to be.

It's all a crapshoot, frankly.

The creature passes below you. Descision time.

>>
>>26625561
Agreed. Swing down, hit it with a little lightning to stun it, then grab it for interrogation. Investigate the stone, too. Osyki's training in alchemy and totemcraft means he would know enough about ore to hazard a guess about what this refinery is for even if he can't communicate with the spirit.
>>
>>26625485
Can we bind it?
>>
If we can say the words of binding quietly and still have it work then we totally can. Jusst need to think of how to appropriately and silently kill an iron spirit.
>>
>>26625699
Maybe? We're in a mine, so we probably have the symbolic ingredients needed to bind an iron spirit. It's unclear how much time it would take, though. We've never bound a spirit outside of the Feral Binding (within the context of the quest, Amal and Tryd were obviously bound at some point), so improvising a free spirit binding could be a lot harder for Osyki to do quickly. Might not be worth it to try.

>>
>>26625766
Not yet. Maybe the sword, since that makes for a silent weapon? Though just doing the wings would be useful if we need to move around the larger pits quickly.
>>
>>26625757
Not binding something?! Blasphemy! Might be the best way to deal with it if we kill it we would have to hide the body. Do dead spirits leave bodys?
>>26625766
Do we have anything to bind it to? Our belt? We need a hat or a helmet for extra bindings.
>>
As a side note, when we get back we should look up what Spheres are. I think it was mentioned in the journal fbriefly. If would be extremely helpful when deciding what to take as the focus.
>>
>>26625877
I've been thinking we should get a mask. It's traditional garb for shamans in a lot of cultures. And I think it has a lot of potential for cool bindings. A mask is an item that confers identity. What happens when you fuse a spirit to that? We'd probably get transformations like we've seen the raptor focuses can do, only spread throughout the body instead of confined to one region. We could use the raptor focus to go all Diego Brando, or Cordia to become one with the earth. Or any number of other cool changes. Assuming a monstrous form of our own with which to fight monsters just appeals to me.

Our power has been slowly growing throughout the quest. We've been getting power ups to it every time we go on our vision quests, but it also seems to just get stronger with use, as well. It should be noted that Osyki is apparently ridiculously powerful for a totemist of his experience, due to the training Ayren gave him. Diarca said any normal starting totemist would reach their limit after binding a few spirits, but Osyki has no practical limit that we've encountered so far.
>>
>>26626199
He's pretty cool. He eventually learns how to force-fossilize things, too, so he can turn things into dinosaur statues instead. Plus there's just a lot of neat tricks you can pull when you can, say, take out an opponents horse by turning the fleas on it into tiny but very hungry dromeosaurs.

You are the shadow. You are the night. You flip off of the roof as the spirit passes below you, clenching your knuckles. Lightning crackles between your knuckles as you land a solid hammer-blow to the side of the thing's head. A bubble of electricity blooms and detonates on the side of the spirit's head, and the resulting shock flips it out of the cart. You pounce on the spirit, holding a spear over its neck and pressing down with all your strength. It's silent, perhaps incapable of speech, though it also does not struggle under your weight. Its crude manipulators dig into the stone floor around you in even grooves.

Behind you, the mine cart rolls to a stop.
>>
>>26626386
To be fair, the binding process changes the thing's shape a lot. We've turned chain armor into plate, gauntlets into cloth gloves, cloaks into amulets. A domino mask could probably transform into a full face mask.

You speak in a wispy, hissing tone as the shirt's power filters your speech. "Where can I find the Iron Tyrant?" you demand, you voice echoing off of the walls in sinuous ribbons of sound. "What is the purpose of these pits?"

The spirit below you remains silent. More and more, the homonculous theory is seeming correct. Its metal fingers continue gouging holes in the earth on either side of it, and it makes no effort to rise from its stationary position.

You let out a sigh, experimentally rising from its chest. It remains on the ground, numbly grasping.

So much for that.

You consider methods of binding. A feral binding could serve, though it might destroy any intelligence the homonculous possesses. A pact with the thing seems out. You could attempt a ritual to spiritually imprison it in an object without a binding, but your know-how on rituals of that sort is shaky at best and you're not sure if you have time to pull it off.

Alternatively, you could just leave for smarter prey and less cramped environs.

Would we still have to dispose of the body with a Feral Bind? Normally we do leave a corpse behind, but this thing is a manifest spirit. I'm not sure how this would work.

And we should take a look at the cart, while we're here. I want to know what that shiny ore is. It might just be iron pyrite, but still worth investigating.
>>
>>26627142
Feral bind it.

I mean, if nothing else, we might be able to put it to use, but I don't expect anything powerful out of it.
>>
>>26627367
Do we have any blank paper on us? Binding spirits to writing implements seems to let them communicate through them. We might be able to interrogate it that way.
>>
>>26627142
We're here might as well bind it. If its unintelligent anyway at least we gained a tool.
>>
Leaving the automaton to its scraping for a moment you search the mine-cart. The ore it carries seems to be iron of some sort, though there are some strange crimson and gold impurities running through the ore that you've never seen the likes of. You don't find a pick or anything else, disappointingly. You suppose you'll have to wing the binding.

With a practiced hand you sketch out the sixteen runes around the automaton, careful to avoid its finger range. Chanting the words of the ritual, you bring you spear around and slam the blade down onto its neck, pouring spiritual power into your weapon.

Your spear resounds off of the homonculous' body with a reverberating clang, sending echoes sweeping down the tunnel in either direction. The spiritual energy poured into your spear dissipates like a wind-blown mist, leaving you feeling slightly drained for the effort. Nothing. That's the first time that's happened since you were barely an apprentice. Either this thing has wards against binding, or it doesn't actually have a spirit to bind.

But then, what's driving it?

You hear some commotion from the tunnel in the direction you originally came from.

Darn. Well, this might not be terrible. Let's go back up the ceiling and see who comes. Maybe there will be beastmen coming along for us to interrogate. Hell, we can even pretend we meant for this to happen. It's totally a Batman thing to disable one thug and wait for his friends to come so we can take them out. No one has to know we screwed up.
>>

Dip the fuck out. On the roof and stealthily as we can. Also erase runes of binding. If we carved them, see I'd alas can erase with earth boots.
>>

Well it was pretty obvious it couldn't be bound. Why did you people want to bind it anyway? It's a mindless construct. It was pretty obvious.
Having too many binds could weaken us, it puts a strain on our spiritual energy. We should only bind things that are especially cool.
>>

We could have bound it. Its a spirit and we bind spirits. Besides it doesnt say anywhere we get weaker as we bind more things.
>>
[[ Starting to feel a little sick. We may end up ending the quest here for the night. In any event, going to hop off for a bit and get some dinner, see if that makes any difference. Be back in a while. ]

[[Shit, dropped my trip again.]]

Actually, Diarca has stated that the more we bind, the more exhausted we get. We don't know our upper limit, but I'm assuming there is one.

And no, we can't bind it. There's nothing there to bind. It's an empty shell motivated by an external will.

>>26628442
Hope you feel better soon, Diarca.
>>
>>26628494
That's different. Binding things into a focus is fine, but binding it into equipment and using it draw our spiritual reserves.
>>
>>26628494
We bound it because it MAY have had information or at the very least would have been useful to have for the inevitable fight. Iron spirit in sword sounds amazing. And we had ABSOLUTELY no indication that it didn't have a spirit. It could have Beene a dumb spirit or something. Read the post. It says that we've literally never seen a binding fail due to it not actually Bering a spirit

It's the actual binding process that tires us, not simply having a focus. So this did waste our resources, but if it had worked there wouldn't be any repercussions. Diarca's said that Osyki has no practical binding limit that we're likely to run into. Presumably he's notice his limits as he edged up to them and found binding more difficult. And if anything, Osyki's binding abilities are getting easier. Look at how the drake's wing actually shrunk to be a more usable focus, when previous large focuses had to be carved down to size.

[[ Alright. Back from dinner and feeling no better, so I'll go ahead and cut the quest here for the night. Expect another Monday thread this week unless plans change, and as always keep an eye on the twitter for further updates and teasers. Please archive the thread, and thanks for following along. ]]

Sorry you're not feeling well, Diarca. It was still a fun thread, despite it. Have a nice night.

Take care!
