Let's see... news. nope. nothing. Other than I've been getting intermittent and weird power and internet outages over the last couple days, so that may be a thing that happens. Guess we'll see. we've also got a line of storms rolling through, but that's not usually an issue.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%201989
and there's a character sheet/clif notes verstion here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1 it's still a bit of a read, but nowhere near as much as a full archive dive.

++

To be fair to Ice, she's handling the situation well enough. You'd no sooner got in the door- after a ride you're pretty sure set a few time and distance records- than she had everyone gathered in the dining hall, including a guy from the chance-vought team and one of their striker reps.

“Two weeks.” She starts out by saying. “That's all the time we've been given to get both our steelwings and ourselves up to combat ready. Patty, you and Nicole need to get cleared on the new strikers yesterday, got me?”

Maverick nods, looking over at Goose. ”Good as done.”

“Outstanding. Once you do that, we'll start in with the networked systems and running chase for our steelwings, maybe get some target time in. We've all gotten kind of lazy here, myself included. Slider's got a range schedule drawn up, get with her after we're done here. Katya, that leg going to be ok?” Ice continues, looking over at Katya, who, while she has crutches, is without a cast.

Katya sighs and nods. “The doctors told me light duty only for the next couple of days, but I am thinking I should be ready to go in less. Maybe a day?”

Ice nods again. “Good. Glad you decided to come along with us.”

>>
She looks down the room at you and the twins, seated across from each other. “Ok, Frank and Merlin, you guys have weapons. There's been an.... issue there, and our rep was just telling us about it. Maybe you'd like to explain, Mr.Perry?”

The tech nods, and stands up, looking at his feet. “We- uh. Well, we weren't expecting to have to ship you off to combat so soon, so the offensive computers aren't online. Or, well, they are, but they're not programmed.”

“What?” Alyssa asks, flatly. “So our jets are completely unarmed?”

“Well, no, they still have their internal weapons- the cannons. But that's all right now. We think we can get them set up to take three or so systems, but that would require a lot of flight testing and we also need to get the defensive systems set up as well, especially with the witch suites.” He says.

“So our jets can't work with missiles or bombs, is what you're saying.” Clarissa asks.

Mr. Perry nods. “I- uh. Yes. That's correct. The new offensive systems are tightly integrated with the network computers, and require entirely new programming. We've got some of it, but we still need captive and live fire tests before we can get it all dialed in, otherwise there could be... issues.”

“What kind of issues?” You ask, sharing a glance with Merlin.

2/3
>>
He shrugs. “We're... we're unsure. Worst case would be a weapon being told to activate and launch without the command actually being sent. I'm- uh. Well, this model carries everything internally, and we think that would be a problem. Our weapons integration team is insistent though, that without the work, no weapons would work correctly, even iron bombs. Well, that and... um.”

“And it's kind of a damn waste of a really expensive air superiority fighter to haul iron bombs around.” Slider says.

He nods. “We thought it best, though, if you decided what weapons you wanted to work up. We can get started as soon as you tell us what you want set up- china lake has also cleared us for their prototype systems.”

Alyssa and Clarissa look at each other, then at you. “We should discuss this.” Alyssa says, while Clarissa nods.

Ice glances at her. “You four talk it out, but they need a decision within the hour. We have fourteen days before we're back aboard the Saratoga, and once we're there, we're on war footing again. Clock's ticking. Dismissed.”

The rest of the witches- and the techs, both of whom seem to be glad to leave- exit the room. The twins, meanwhile, don't move, both switching their intense gazes over to you and Merlin.

“Well, what do you two think?” Clarissa says, after a pause. “Aly and me haven't really talked about it much, but there's this folder they sent us.”

[x] “You've already read through it. Suggestions?”

You open the folder and flip through it real fast before passing it over to Merlin, who opens it up and starts reading.

“You've already read through it.” You state, looking over at the twins. “What do you two think?”

They look at each other briefly then back at you. “Well, we-” Alyssa starts, but her twin interrupts her.

“Aly's being stupid and insisting on working up a bunch of crap we don't need and-” She says, before Alyssa cuts her off.

“Don't need!? Tell me you want to fight a striker without that new agile! And we'll need the railgun if we run into anything like that carrier Frank killed up in the Bering! And-”

“And both of those things don't work with the fleet's other fighters! We need to do the conventional workups then we'll have time for one of the new weapons!” Clarissa says. “Because what happens when all the shiny stuff you want runs out of ammo!?”

“Oh, because that's been such a problem before, right?” Alyssa answers, sarcastically. “Besides, the railgun won't run out of ammo anyway, and they can always just recharge it from the ship's power plant-”

“And it needs magic to work, and Merlin's the only witch in the other jet, doofus.” Clarissa responds. “The only thing you picked we agree on is the Tesla cannon, and that's only because that maser sounds dangerous.”

“So, I'm going to take a guess that you two don't agree on this.” You note, somewhat drily.

[x] “Ladies, please. Merlin, anything stick out to you?”

“Ladies, please,” You say, trying to calm them down. “You're both very pretty, but focus. Merlin, anything stick out to you?”

Merlin looks up at you and shakes her head. “I- I'm not sure, Frank. I think it might be a good idea to get the testing done for the existing weapons, that way we could use sidewinders and AMRAAMs, at least, and I think the phoenix, too. The rest I don't know about...”

“Well, what are we looking at?” You ask.

Merlin shrugs. “There's existing weapons, but we'd have to do separate sets for air to air and air to ground. That would let us use anything in inventory right now. There's an agile three- apparently what testing they've done says it can engage a witch successfully. The airforce's ASAT is in here, but I'm not sure how useful that would be.”

She looks back down at the paper. “There's the naval airborne railgun, I guess it's descended from the army's program. It's designed to require less magic from a witch, but it's not as powerful, either. There's a maser in here from the Roswell labs, I guess they worked out power settings. There's a Tesla cannon, some kind of particle weapon, I think. And then there's some mini missile system that's supposed to be able to engage multiple targets at once in a complete sphere around an aircraft, but it's bulky and it doesn't look like it carries much ammunition.”

She looks back up at you. “If we had more time, I could tell you more. I-I'm sorry, Frank.”

Voting existing air and ground and the Agile III's. We are really short on time here so it's better to go with the stuff that really works instead of something that might screw us over majorly.
>>
>>26607489
People, as much as I want MACROSS MISSILE MASSACRE, it's an unproven combat system that could potentially result in Blue on Blue, and we do NOT WANT THIS ON OUR HEADS.

That said [x] The agile three's a given. Tell us about the mini missiles, for curiosity's sake. The Tesla cannon too.
>>
>>26607489
>[] "Don't worry about it, Sam. That's enough to go on."
Existing air, Agile III, Railgun.
We're air superiority, we need the variety that existing air gives us. If we're gonna keep tangling with Konstantina, or go up against other witches, the Agile III gives us an edge there. Railgun is our heavy hitter and our ground attack solution. Plus, we're networked in now. Having a lot of air-to-air gives our girls the missiles they'll need to lob in order to take advantage of that system.

Gonna have to go with these honestly, air-to-air is our big shtick, and we should stick to that. The Tesla Cannon should be enough for anything we need to strafe on the ground. Besides, I have doubts that Merlin would be good enough to fuel the railgun.

[] “Don't worry about it Sam. That's enough to go on.”

“That's enough for me, Sam. I think we want existing air, the Agile three, and the Tesla cannon.” You say, and Merlin nods, while Clarissa looks over.

“Means we won't be able to move much mud.” She says, thinking. “Freefall stuff, just iron bombs, I think.”

You shrug. “It's a bit of a waste to task two of the most advanced air superiority fighters ever to moving mud, though, isn't it?”

She nods, agreeing. “Well, it sounds good to me. Now if Aly-”

“It works for me, too.” Alyssa says, hurriedly. “I was more worried about the agile than the railgun anyway. The Tesla cannon sounded like it would cover us for hitting ground targets, plus we still have the cannons in the nose.”

“S-so what do they have you two doing, anyway?” Merlin asks, looking first at you, then the twins.

“Avionics, defensive systems testing, work with the witch suite, networks.... “ Clarissa sounds bored. “It's all mostly done already, though. We'll be spending most of the time figuring out the network systems and getting the last few bugs worked out.”

“Boring stuff.” Alyssa says, with a yawn. “We'll go tell Ice, if you're done with us.”

“That sounds lewd.” Her sister says, looking over. “She didn't mean it like that.”

“Maybe I did?” Alyssa says, laughing. “But I don't think he could handle us anyway.”

[x] “Yeah, we're done. You go tell ice, We'll go tell the crews in the hangar.”

“Yeah, we're done here.” You say, nodding. “You two go tell Ice what's up, We'll go tell the crews in the hangar.”

“Sounds good.” Alyssa nods. “And Frank, I was just joking. We wouldn't want to deal with Slider or Ice.”

“Or Katya. Those three need to work out some sort of time share or something.” Clarissa says, leaving the table.

“Ew.” Merlin says again, making a face. You laugh.

“Come on, Sam. Let's go see the techs and let them know what's going on.” You say, standing up and grabbing your coat.

She nods and grabs the folder before the two of you walk out the door, headed down to your hangar.

The guards at the door let you in after close scrutiny of your ID cards- their manner a lot more professional than you're used to. Merlin looks over her shoulder at the door, then at you. You just shrug. “No idea.” You say, for emphasis. “Never seen them before.”

The company rep- Mr. Perry- is on the hangar floor with a Marine officer and one of the engineers, looking over the Wyverns. Both are mostly opened- access panels tailing wires across the deck to attached computers, while one tech occupies the front seat- your seat- in your aircraft, exchanging yells with a counterpart on the ground, working through who knows what.

They all turn as you join their little group, coughing politely. To announce your presence, then firing a salute to the officer- a general- one of a few still crawling around the base, generally making life more difficult than it needs to be.

>>
“L- Lieutenant commander bishop.” Mr. Perry says, sounding a bit surprised. “Did- did you decide what we should get to work on?”

You nod, and Merlin hands him the folder, your weapons on the top. “Yeah, we talked it out. We want to start working up with the stuff we've already got in inventory for air to air, the agile threes, and the Tesla cannon.”

He nods, handing the folder to the engineer next to him. “We'll have you ready for your first test flight this evening.” He says, looking over at the fighters. “Everything looks to be in excellent shape, and we're hoping we won't- uh- won't run into any glitches.”

“Yeah, me too.” You say, remembering the last few flights you've had.

“Excuse me, son, I don't think we've been introduced.” The marine general says, stepping in to shake your hand. “General Porter, fourth marines.”

You nod, returning his handshake. “Lieutenant Commander Bishop, VF three.” You motion to Merlin, who nods. “And that's Lieutenant Senior Grade Samantha Wells, my RIO.”

He smiles. “I wondered when I'd meet the squid that wore the first of the ninth's crest. How'd you get that?” He asks, his voice carrying a definite undertone of.... hostility? No, not hostility, but challenge, for sure.

[] Both.

“Well, sir. My dad was awarded the CMH while serving with them.” You say, nodding at your aircraft.

“That's all well and good, son, but it hardly means you can wear their colors.” The general says, taking in a breath for his next sentence.

“And, after Tanana, I was told it fit.” You finish with a slight grin.

The general pauses, then nods. “Huh. So it might, son. So it might.”

“If there's a problem with the painting sir, I-” He cuts you off.

“No, no real problem. There's a few marines that are unhappy you're flying with them, but nothing major yet. If there was, we'd have lodged a formal complaint.” He says, kind of hurriedly. “And I think it'll do my boys good to see it flying over them in Iceland anyway.”

He gestures to your aircraft. “You might not know it, son, but these two birds are starting to get to be a bit of a legend in their own right, along with their pilots. Hell of a morale boost, unless something happens to you.”

You nod, understanding but not quite sure how to respond. The general chuckles. “Well, son, I suspect we'll be seeing more of each other once we're aweigh. I'll let you get back to work. Mr. Perry, Lieutenant Wells.” He says, nodding at them in turn before leaving the hangar.

“Well, Lieutenant Commander Bishop,” Mr. Perry says, after the doors close and the general is gone. “We've got a- uh. A busy two weeks ahead of us.”

“Sounds like it.” You say, nodding.

“If you want we can- uh- we can set up a couple of cots in one of the offices.” He says. “It might make a difference, but I can't promise it would be comfortable.”

[] “Whatever helps. It'd be like trying to catch some sleep in a ready room.”

“Whatever helps,” You say, nodding. “It'd be like catching sleep in a ready room.”

Mr. Perry nods. “We'll set up a little area for you and - uh. For you and Lieutenant Wells. It might mean the difference between being able to get you out with three weapons or two if something comes up.” He says.

You look back at the aircraft, the crews just starting to unhook lines and close panels, getting ready to preflight the bird for tonight.

You and Merlin talk a bit more with Mr. Perry- small talk, nothing important. He's got a cousin in Europe, it turns out, but apparently he's a rear- area guy, in France or maybe the UK. You head back to the house after a few minutes to find it a frenzy of packing- Rufus wanders by with Goose, laden with a pair of rucksacks like a mule. He looks over at you as you walk in, then trots along behind her, his tail wagging happily.

You almost run into Ice headed up the stairs- she's in her flight kit, you note, with her little wrist MFD already strapped on. “Frank.” She nods, sliding past you. “You all squared away?”

You nod. “We're having them set up a couple cots in the hangar for us.” You respond. “Might be the difference between leaving with a fault in a weapon system and not.”

Ice nods. “Good. Listen, can't chat, Raich has herself and me on the first range cycle. We've got free reign on the San Clemente island range complex. Speaking of, they've started piecing that tomcat back together. Looks like it was an age or wear-related failure in one of the engines. Anyway, I'll stop by the hangar when we get back.”

“We'll be in the air ourselves.” You say, motioning to Merlin.

1/2
>>
“Really? They're quick.” Ice responds. “Good luck, be safe.” She trots down the stairs a second before Slider slams into you at nearly a dead sprint.

“Ah- damnit Frank!” She yells. “Don't stand that damn close to a ladderwell. Fucker.”

“Jeeze, sorry.” You respond, holding up your hands.

“Feh. You flying tonight?”

“Yeah,” You nod. “Already getting started.”

“Good. Tabby and I may see you on the way back from the range. Take care, alright?”

You nod, and she's down the stairs, taking them almost three at a time in her rush to catch Ice.

You don't actually get to enjoy what little time you've got before your scheduled flight, spending most of the time packing your gear into a single sea bag and stowing the rest in some cardboard boxes- to be stored at a warehouse until you get back. Goose wanders by, asking if you need any help moving anything- you don't, but thank her for the offer. She nods and smiles.

“Oh,” She says, somewhat mischievously. “Don't worry about Rufus. The colonel said he'd take him while we were at sea.”

You're not entirely sure you trust the girl.

ASAT was an air force anti satellite weapon- basically, a missile strapped to a jet that went into a climb, acting like the first stage of a spacebound rocket. at a certain altitude, the missile launched without pilot input and attacked a specific satellite target. IRL the program was killed for... budgetary concerns, I think.

and yes, ADMM is a macross missle massacre weapon.

You know... The more I think about, the more I realize AC-Guy must have pissed off higher power to have as bad luck as he does...

Yeah, just a reference. Though it would be neat!

I'd like to see our old "friend" come back into the story, somewhat humbled by her near death experience and being rescued by Frank.
>>

>our old "friend"

who?
>>
>>26612427
Col. Bitchtits. Forgot her real name if we ever knew it.
>>
>>26612406

Still waiting for Ramwitch here.
>>
>>26612443
Hell, I just want some sort of funny pay off for the NAVY mug gift more than anything. Like one day Fronk comes back to his room and finds and AIR FORCE mug waiting for him.
>>
>>26612559

No.

A MARINE Mug.

A marine is still navy after all.
>>
>>26612598
Yeah, that'd be perfect.
>>
>>26612598
A mug with Gunnybear and Gunny's stripes on it. Keep it, never mention it, drink coffee, mess with best girl Slider
>>
>>26612120

Damn you Merc.

Half that time that means the quester's the one collapsing!
>>
>>26612120

If not for work, absolutely. But I have to get up Wednesday now- when we first started, I wasn't on a fixed schedule. if next week's work schedule is favorable, though, I'll run longer.
>>
>>26612661
We only outlasted Merc like 2 or 3 times IIRC.
>>26612732
I, for one, honestly don't mind it that much. Sure, it's nice to have longer threads/more content, but I also have work on Wednesdays, so my choice always ends up being get 4-5 hours of sleep or go to bed before the thread's over.

so how is Katya walking around with crutches without a cast, after breaking her femur and not using a heal witch?
>>
>>26612825
She might've agreed to a heal witch after the whole 'invasion of iceland' call came through
>>
>>26612825
If you look up endurance in the dictionary, they got Katya's picture right there, seriously, best page in a dictionary.
>>
>>26612933
This would actually apply to Russia in general.
>>
Tonks possibly friday, depending on if I can work something out with merc.

Don't get pissy, he had the day before I did.

It's too bad we can't work Merlin and Goose in somehow.

Well clearly it's going to be all red hot with Frank in the middle breaking out in a cold sweat.

Any other little references we could add? Since you probably won't recognize it that picture I drew is the aviation/weather symbol for "severe turbulence ahead" (hurr hurr)
