Is this the appropriate board to discuss Fallen London?
>>
Probably not, but go on.

It's been a while since I've had anyone else to talk to who's played it.
>>
I played it for quite a long time awhile back.

I got to a point where I needed something like 6,000 candles just to attempt, and attempt cost me 200. I screwed up and wasted 8,000 candles, at which point I gave up the game cold turkey.
>>
>>26583170
What on earth were you attempting?
>>
>>26583170
6,000 candles! the foxtail candles?
>>
>>26583042
I'm at the end of the Cheesemongers quest and can't decide what to do
kill everyone or set up hot daughter
>>
>>26583227
I set up the girl as the new Cheesemonger and sent the old one off to a convent but the Game goes on no matter what.
>>
>>26583189
I don't remember the specifics, but it was candles the church give you.

It was really really far along my chosen storyline, and it was this weird system of shadow alleyways I had to navigate. I don't remember the specifics but it required like 8 successes before you got 4 failures, and if you got 4 failures, you had to start over.

It was super intense and after losing all my candles attempting it, I just stopped.
>>
>>26583245
well that's good to know.
i can't help but always try to be loyal in these kind of games
>>
>>26583227
>>26583245
I loved that quest. I must've spent a whole day just thinking about each of the implications. It really drew me into the game.
>>
>>26583262
was it the eater-of-chains thing?
>>
>be a writer
>write like 5 books
>??????
>PROFIT
>>
>>26583280
No, I remember it was much further along than that.
>>
>>26583280
no, he's talking about the labyrinth of the orphanage. it's the shadowy ambition thing

you don't need any. there's an action right at the beginning of the labyrinth that reveals you need a special candle, and it skips the 6k thing, iirc.

>>26583245
i set up the girl, and slayed the mother. gives you a quality that literally says in the description "This may prove to be the key to your future" but you can also get that in the fightclub thing with bandage man
>>
>>26583319
This, been working for me super great.
>>
>>26583319
>>26583395
I've been doing archaeology to rake in money (and try to find the Eyeless Skull), but maybe I'll go back to writing when I'm done. I did just enough to get the Author profession and then went 'fuck it too much work'.
>>
I find it funny how the game kind of pushes you towards bisexuality
I keep trying to talk the incestuous brother and sister into having a threesome
>>
>>26583436
...how does one get a profession?
>>
>>26583447
Yup, trying it out right now.
>>
>>26583361
REALLY!?!

well shit. I suppose I just never got that special candle.

In any case, the game inspiried me greatly to run a campaign that used multiple types of currencies, and different factions/organizations valued them differently. It really got the players involved in the world when they were screwing over certain factions just to make that faction's currency worthless in the rest of the city.
>>
>>26583447
Victorian hedonism, ho!

You can do it again in the Traitor Empress's Court and even on her throne if you don't mind being immediately shipped off to the Tomb-Colonies afterwards.
>>
>>26583455
If your stats are under 70, there should be an option to take on a trainee profession at your lodgings.

Otherwise, you'll get the option on certain connection cards (for example, a strong Bohemian connection will set you up with a job as a Journalist, which pays nicely in blackmail material).

Author is the Journalist upgrade; you get it after publishing a book of a certain quality.
>>
i let that young countess stay underground with the claymen

>>
>>26583521
oh okay, thanks!
i'm currently writing one and the quality is around 70 so it should at least get me some decent echos

>>
Which group did you guys choose to be closest to?
I choose the Bohemians
They don't seem very helpful
>>
>>26583853

The Great Game.

they are also unhelpful. Oh, for the days when I was young and easily swayed by spy games...
>>
>>26583917
Hell. still waiting on them to implement the "Courting the Quiet Deviless" storyline

none of them are helpful, it mostly determines what cards let you gain the Spending Secrets, and Counting the Days qualities.
>>
>>26584031
I'm doing that one
I won't go through with the abstraction though
>>
>>26584051
no, that's the Intimate of devils story. Once you've made every stat 100, you can get married, and one of the potential partners is supposed to be the Quiet Deviless, but they haven't put it in yet.

I already went through with the abstraction.
>>
>>26584076

>>
>>26584396
it's got a great narrative and a wonderful sense of humor.

also you can play it in 5 minute bursts, so it's not like you have to quit doing whatever you're already busy with.
>>
>>26584396
Because its grim in total darkness and set into Victorian London, where NO ONE cares about you. And devil's fedoras.
>>
>>26584396
sense of humor and degree of choices is it's best selling points. i've played few games that let me kill orphans, seduce old women and have innocents arrested with little to no consequences. there's so much to do and so many aspects that you'll always have something to work towards.

and the way you get action points and stuff let you play at a decent clip without exhausting it too quickly
>>
>>26584384
I have no idea if that's true or not, but I wouldn't say it'd surprise me if it were.
>>
>>26584473
but also really light-hearted about it.

The devs call the genre "Comic Horror" instead of cosmic horror.

she was trying to wash blood off her hands by pouring even more on. you genuinely did her a favour. you got her out of the game.
>>
>>26584999
It kind of seems like that is what the narrative is implying. Like she is trying to subtly get you to do it.
>>
>>26585079
If you agree to help her out instead of getting rid of her, she's not subtle about it at all.
>>
My ex plays this game a lot.

Like a lot a lot.

It is like KoL, right?
>>
>>26585135
the humor is a lot more subtle, and there isn't combat in the traditional sense, but yeah.
>>
>>26585135
Sort of kind of.

More story, fewer HEY GET THIS REFERENCE moments.
>>
Do easier way to get money ever open up?
>>
>>26585267
...sort of.
>>
>>26585267
You'll get better rewards as time goes on - but also more expensive things to blow them on.

You'll never be rich rich unless you do a lot of grinding.
>>
Is anyone else trying to get 77 first city coins to play poker with?
>>
>>26585267
the thing about it, is that the way actions work means you have to re-think how grinding works entirely. basically, there will be a lot of moments where you'll think "aha! i've found an infinite money loop!" but really, going through that loop will get you money slower then just doing standard actions and selling the proceeds.
it tops off at around an echo an action, with an extra 30 echos for 5 actions once a week for advanced professions.
>>
>>26585135
just started this game
any tips? seems very interesting
>>
Am I the only one who sold Alice to the Masters?

>>
>>26585344
I found the best way is to use the criminals and moon pearls since you can earn Connected: Criminals through selling casing in the Flit.

There is an entire forum dedicated to the game where plenty of people are willing to embark on the heist to help you.
>>
>>26585693
well they say i have to find lodgings.
so far i went mad and had a fight with a streetcat.
am i doing this right?
>>
>>26585826

>>
>>26585826
Just another average day in Fallen London.

For some real advice, decide what area you want to start with. Do you like the stories about bloodshed or partying? Do you want to solve mysteries or rob houses? Pick a starting area, grind for a while and buy some nice gear. Your character's story will appear over time. Also, don't jump too quickly into an ambition. Plenty of other content.
>>
>>26585717
i need to start looking at the meta stuff for this game. i've been trying to play it in too much of a vacuum
>>
>>26585580
It's funny, I've been playing this game for awhile and I actually can't think of many tips to give you. It's kind of a just go with it kinda game

>>
>>26585667

>>
>>26586045
Get the basic lodgings first. when you've got a stat at 30, a card will show up that lets you buy a better house, the new house lets you have 3 cards in your hand at once. there's more houses at higher levels.

the ones for 70 let you have 4 cards, but they are absurdly expensive. 40,000 drops of honey expensive

captcha: Ynont Somerset

Captcha makes a good point, why aren't there any houses associated with the university?

Speaking of - it's all right to either build up all your stats or focus on one. It all depends on what you want to see and experience.
>>
>>26589441
however
certain things cease to be available at certain levels, so don't be in a rush to blow past it all

they actually just changed an item that used to be an equippable that lowered all stats, to a consumeable, so you can always use that to go back down if you need

Confident Smiles come in pretty quickly and you can farm them through actions in your lodgings.

No need to convince me any further, dis shit is happening.

After escaping from prison, Zarok was faced with a dilemma. He was alone in a dark city with only a few echoes and the clothes on his back, and what was a man to do? Like many other young men, the prospect of wealth through crime sang to him like a mermaid to sailors. He cackled with the crones, grinned with the gangsters, and
had a certain fire in his heart for the whores down at the Black Lotus.
>>
>>26612389
However, alcohol mixed with chronic poverty and seasoned with a dash of undiagnosed mental illness, would fan that fire into an unquenchable inferno of rage against society, God, and that insufferable newspaper urchin on 8th Ave. The Bohemians would call him "nihilistic", and he would retort with a slurred insult and an obscene gesture.

I don't think it's the only way for Watchful to go actually.

I'm sure they all involve tracking someone down for a slight done in your past.

I've stormed fortresses filled with spider cultists and murdered people in foreign lands where dead people die, but the Game's reach is long. Longer then anyone could have imagined. While I've gotten answers, they only raise more questions.

Since this seems fairly active: Is the living story for raising dangerous really the only one that you can't get even at high levels? Or is it just hidden somewhere?
>>
>>26616783
Are you talking about the Vake ambition? Yeah, I believe that's the only one that's not complete right now.
>>
>>26616828
Actually, no.
Certain early storylets in Veilgarden/Ladybones Road/Spite will give "A living story will begin soon" upon success (or rare success in Veilgarden). A week later you will receive a message, which will give you a stat boost roughly equal to the boost from a trade secret.

You always accesses the ones I mentioned, but I couldn't find anything like this for dangerous, hence me asking.

Yep, that's what the living story message looks like. The storylets that give the "A living story will begin soon" message all get locked at higher levels though.

To clarify, dangerous is the only quality where you can't access those storylets after a certain level.

Do it. 60 Echoes for an Exceptional Short Story, or the chance to become a full-fledged author.

Also, guys, let's talk about some of the mysteries of Fallen London:

WARNING: SPOILERS

Why did the Masters betray Mr. Eaten? Because of Egypt?
What is the price that is not known that the Empress will pay, or already is paying?
Is "Icarus" the Bazaar personified? Is the Correspondence (sometimes referred to as the correspondence between lovers) that between it and the Sun?
Who the hell does Feducci work for? The Presbyter? Hell?
Who are the Finger-Kings? Are they from Parabola? Are they the "ultimate big bad"?
What is the Nadir?
>>
>>26622709

The price the Empress paid dwells in the Palace basements.
>>
>>26622709
i don't know about the story but "nadir" means the lowest point or something and is the opposite of the Zenith which is the highest point

so maybe hell or something
