The Civilizations of Man forced you out of your forest homes, stripping them of life and converting them into tools and weapons, all so that they could expand more, completely disregarding the 'lesser' creatures that inhabited these lands. You were overwhelmed, and many have fallen once the humans discovered your tribes, but instead of fighting for your homelands to the bitter end, the wise druid Ered suggested to find a new home. Not all agreed, but those who did travelled far north, through planes and other forests, until you had reached a massive swamp.

"The humans would not dare attack us in these places." Ered thought. "And there is no reason for them to do so. There is very little to be found in these swamps. We can remain here until the end of days if we must."

And so it was decided. The people took shelter within the thick trees of the swamps, and made friends with the wildlife. For nearly a year, they had all quietly mourned the loss of their brethren.

The Dryads had suddenly heard a shriek. It did not come from any of them. It was countless miles away, echoing through the ground. Even this far from the human lands, they could feel them torturing the plantlife, slaughtering the wildlife, completely disregarding all beings even on a spiritual level. You will not stand for this. Not anymore.

A leader must be selected. Someone with the wisdom and smarts to lead their small numbers on this quest to protect nature from the filthy and greedy minds that infest this world. Who will it be? Who are you?

>Ered the Druid. An elf initially, he has abandoned his mortal form long ago, and became one with nature. He claims to be a thousand years old, though whether that is true or not is impossible to determine. As a Dryad, Ered does not seem to age, or show any signs of age as a Dryad would. Ered is capable of controlling the forces of Nature itself, though his power is not unlimited.

>Endil the Priestess of the Nature Gods. A 300 years old Dryad, she claims to be able to communicate with the Gods directly, and she claims that they demand the humans to stop, no matter how. Is capable of above average magic, which she claims are miracles from the Gods.

>Endil the Animal Priestess. A Dryad of only 100 years of age, she is nonetheless well-respected among her people, no doubt because of her ability to persuade animals to do what seems to be absolutely anything, without the use of magic.

Elebril has been chosen to lead our people. Ered and Endil remain by her side for guidance, as there is no doubt that they will become valuable assets in the events to come. The three of you had quickly awoken all of your people, and now you, Elebril, the true Priestess of the Nature Gods, must decide what they should do.

It has been established in your long history that the Gods do not take well to the sacrifice of your own people, or those who live in harmony with Nature. Through experimentation, back when you were still a young race.

Nobody has ever asked about sacrificing those who defile nature, however. Until now. You will ask the Gods when it is time to pray, later.
>>
>>26563273
We only have a population of 100. Sure mass sacrifice is fun but I want this to go longer than half a thread.
We should reproduce ourselves, a lot. Since we don't need much we can support a lot of people.
Then we can do some sacrificing.

I still want that army of bears though.

So our plan of action is:

You begin gathering volunteers for the task, which is essentially self sacrifice for the good of the tribe. Surprisingly, 10 Dryads agree, albeit with hesitation. But times are indeed desperate. They bid farewell to their friends and loved ones, and the ritual begins. It takes some days, but the priests and mages are able to successfully convert all but one Dryad into holy birth giving trees.

The one unlucky Dryad quickly rotted and fell apart in his tree form. Perhaps it was not luck, but the Gods deemed his dedication unworthy.

>Send people to explore the surrounding lands
>Pray to the Nature Gods for Guidance in these desperate times
>Pray to the Nature Gods for Forgiveness for the failed Ritual of Life.

Usually, only 1 Dryad every few years agrees to the ritual. Clearly, it was Elebril's words that driven them to such zeal.

90 Dryads live in the tribe.
There are 10 Trees of Life, which must grow before they give birth to new Dryads.

>Actually 9

>>
>>26563482
Let's see what is in this swamp.
>>
>>26563479
>why

Because the players of the race want to DO it! (Or maybe not, depending on if it gets a majority)

All Im saying is, you are the GM, you can make it work. Its your world, you shape it. burning one, turning her to ashes, fertilizing a tree with those ashes, they heed fruits that make you prophezise after consumption, there another way of doing it.

Say "yes, but", not "no"
>>
>>26563482
We can only do one thing per turn right?
In that case
>Send people to explore the surrounding lands
We gotta know what is happening, also we need to find bears
and
>Pray to the Nature Gods for Forgiveness for the failed Ritual of Life.
The gods clearly didn't want that unworthy one.
>>

>>
>>26563482
>>Send people to explore the surrounding lands
>>
>>26563533
Its not what was asked for. (It kinda is, since we want to breed, but thats not the point)

The players want a feel. If they think Dryards that kill for their god are a fun idea, thats the feel a GM should be acomodating. The goal is not to just have less Dryards, the goal is to act in a character the players are developing

A dozen Dryads were sent off to explore the swamps, somewhat unhappy that they are unable to be among those who pray for the brother who had fallen during the Ritual of Life. With promises that everything will be explained, and that the Gods do not make mistakes, they were sent further North, to see what secrets the Swamps hold.

You, along with the rest of your tribe, prayed. Days were spent begging for forgiveness, and at the end of that, you asked for the reason why one of your kinsmen were denied.

The Gods did not respond to your prayers. The people are furious. The scouts will come back tomorrow to bring news on the surroundings. In the meantime, there are matters to resolve.

>Calm down the people (How?) and move on
>Attempt to figure out why the Gods did not respond to your prayers (Divination rituals)

"The humans have weakened our Gods with their mindless destruction and greed!" You preach to your people. They grow more furious, but it is a good fury. One of zeal, a lust for justice. "The more humans are killed, the more nature is restored, the stronger our Gods will become! From this day onward, I swear that all humans will die, because as long as they exist, the Gods of Nature, and Nature itself, will never be at peace!"

As a priestess yourself, this is what you actually believe. Your words drive the people to emotion that you didn't think your kind was able to express. The feeling of zeal is almost savage, but it is not misplaced. The humans will pay.

Ered, your druid, does not seem to share that feeling, and only raises an eyebrow at your showcase. Regardless, he remains silent.

The scouts have arrived. They bring news of tribes of lizardmen, at what clearly seems to be armed conflict. They wield weapons created from natural resources.

Deception and obscurity are our main weapons. It is possible to shape the surrounding land in such a way that it will be nearly impossible for normal human beings to navigate and get anywhere, or even escape if they decide to. >Fortifications
You send off Ered and almost half of your (still incredibly inspired) tribe to shape the surrounding lands, so that outsiders will not interfere with our business. You gave instructions to not be merciful when designing traps, and it is pretty clear that the people have no intentions to do so. Ered still seems to have his doubts, but decides not to speak up on them yet, and leaves without giving you the opportunity to inquire.

Seeing as you sent Ered off, you talk to Endil about the recent events. "It is horrible, sister Elebril. Humans are horrible." The young Dryad says. She is an honest, maybe gullible person, but under your guidance you will make sure that she does what she must.

Ered and his group return in a few days. He shrugs off your inquiries about the current situation, claiming to be too tired to speak about this for the time being. One of the Dryads that went with him reports on what they were able to accomplish.

The plantation surrounding our settlement in a rather wide radius has been crafted to be semi-sentinent, filled with poisonous man-eater plants, thorned vines with paralytic poison, obscuring mists, terrained shaped in ways to confuse even the most seasoned rangers that constantly changes to ensure that the trespasser gets permanently lost, and nests of terrifying predators placed in the most convenient of places, and many more things that would take too much time to say.

He only asks for one more thing.

You overestimate superstition. It only lasts until one of us dies. The second some hunter accidentally kills a dryad who wandered outside, it's all over. "These are the ones responsible! They can be killed!" Cue torches.

Hell, or just until someone nuts up. There will always be someone brave enough to step in.
>>
>>26564709
>Better yet make it that he only babbles incogerent stuff when asked about the forest. You know "he was never the same after he went in there" and stuff.
I support that.

Agree with the general prospect of spare them but ruthlessly spill his blood should he set foot in our land again.
>>
>>26564679

Spare.

Keep the quest, movin'!
>>
>>26564722
Which is why we gotta be careful. We're only like 90 people. Better be protected by superstition than prancing around in that forest completely unprotected.
>>
>>26564722
>Cue torches.
>30 angry peasants with torches and pitchforks vs "poisonous man-eater plants, thorned vines with paralytic poison, obscuring mists, terrained shaped in ways to confuse even the most seasoned rangers that constantly changes to ensure that the trespasser gets permanently lost, and nests of terrifying predators placed in the most convenient of places, and many more things that would take too much time to say."

I think we're good, at least for now.

Meh, hardly railroading. More that the apparently benevolent elf-dryad doesn't want to be party to creating werebeasts. Not saying we absolutely couldn't.
>>
>>26564709
Mindwipe is currently impossible, and how insane someone goes after the fun trip will depend on the person.

>Spare them if they prove that they seek redemption

The Dryad nods, and goes off to finish the spell. Everyone is aware that most trespassers simply won't even think about asking for forgiveness from nature, but if they die, it is simply because they were unworthy.

A few days pass as the next step is being contemplated. Ered is still looking rather grumpy, but he follows your commands without any complaints. You send a few scouts away to keep watch over your territories. The Trees of Life, feeling much safer under the protection of Nature, grow faster. There still remains the issue with the lizardmen, who seem to be using the resources of Nature to wage war, much like humans did. Something should probably be done about it.

Also Ered could become a problem in the future, we need to do something about that.

>>26564869
It appears that specific character doesn't want to go our evil ways. This is hardly railroading, we are creating conflict potential in our tribe and the DM lets us feel that. In case you didn't notice the situation is about to escalate.
>>
>>26564895
I'm not liking that prick Ered, we should talk to him, try and chill his wooden nips.
>>
>>26564914

Agreed.

It's not like we're flaying trespassers alive and sacrificing them to the powers of Chaos. We made some unfriendly wildlife to protect our historically pansy-asses.

You send a squad of Dryads to investigate the lizardmen settlements to the north, so that you can get a feeling of what you will be dealing with. A couple weeks later, they return. With the use of minor magic and excellent survival skills, they were able to gather rather detailed information on them. They managed to find three tribes, settlements of about 600 two legged lizards each, most of which has been converted into military. The area surrounding the settlements has been scavenged for resources, and the settlements themselves surrounded by wooden palisades.

The amount of warriors constantly moving in and out (from all three tribes) indicates a rather serious war situation. The tribes all share a rather basic structure by which they indicate the talent, value and potential of their kinsmen.

>Brownscaled lizardmen are the most numerous, and also treated with the least respect, are the poorest, and equipped with the cheapest weapons and armors.

>Bluescaled lizardmen seem to be the equivalent of human nobility. They get the most food, the best houses, and the sharpest spears.

>A Greenscaled lizardman has been noticed in a large building, in the center of one of the settlements. The riches those possess, and the orders they give away seem to clearly put them in a leadership position.

>Also, a goblin has been sighted next to the Greenscaled lizardman.

>The names of the settlements are Atdon, Blaham and Bafeld. Bafeld is where the Greenscaled lizardman has been sighted.

>>
>>26565040
Not really, we don't need much and since we're the ultimate naturel loving pansy-asses we can probably just ask some trees to give us some.
>>
Spy on the lizards. They may be useful allies yet.
>>
>>26565054
That's all well and good but what are their recent movements?
>>
>>26565054
Who are they at war with?
Maybe we can use our magics to turn them on themselves because with a measely 90 people we stand absolutely no chance in open combat.
>>
>>26565073
They spied on the village it seems, just seeing war preparations. Obviously not on us, otherwise it would've been reported.

Next I say we work on our magic.
>>
>>26565054
>>26565057

I take that back. There's a goblin among them. If the lizard ruler is consorting with gobbos he's probably an asshole.

I suggest we keep an eye on them, maybe find out what's got them so riled up. They don't seem like an immediate threat.
In the mean time let us try and communicate with the gods.
>>
>>26565095
Right, we should have some of our people keep an eye on them while we work on our homo-juju.
>>
They move either to raid each others' settlements, or to set up ambushes, awaiting raiders.

They are at war with each other.

>Try to make contact with the lizardmen (Which tribe?)
>Harass the lizardmen via sabotage (Which Tribe?)
>Try to reestablish contact with the weakened Gods of Nature (Tell me if you want to remove this option completely)

>>
>>26565117
I think we shouldn't try and bother the lizardmen currently, just have some scouts keep an eye on them.
Not sure what we should do with our spare time though.
>>
>>26565117
Work on magic skills. Both through praying and practicing.
>>
>>26565117
Oh, great potential.
Are all 3 at war with each other?

If so what can we do to make this escalate, or rather, which of their cities is closest to us? Maybe we can make the other 2 team up to eridicate them.
But let's not reveal ourselves.
Maybe we can ambush some caravans with nobles in them and make it look like on of their tribe did it. That would certainly produce some unrest.
>>
>>26565117

I see.

We should leave them to their own devices until our power and numbers grow.
I vote for God-talking.

Could we perhaps breed dangerous animals to use as an army of sorts? That would be a good option too.
>>
>>26565184
I take it back, we are too weak to risk that now.
Maybe we should just do >>26565172 and also see how the general opinion of the public is, how everyone is holding togehter and if there is unrest.
>>
>>26565207
I vote this, get some beasts goin.
>>
>>26565117
Well that should buy us some time.

I say we tech up. And by tech up I mean magic up.

A few months are spent training and performing various preparations. The lizardmen continue their petty war which you decided not to involve yourself with, but it becomes ever more noticeable as they continue converting nature into murder tools. What is worse, the scouts had found a druid in the Atdon tribe, who seems to do nothing as nature is being violated. It seems he does not understand that his power comes from nature, and he will lose it should he anger it enough.

Another Greenscaled lizardman had been noticed fighting for the Bafeld tribe. It is a sorcerer that established a mental link to some weak magic users so that he can remove the danger of spellcasting off himself and redirect them at the young apprentices. Or, more accurately, slaves.

In the last few days, however, your scouts reported of no conflict happening in the marshes. It seems unlikely that peace had been made, but the matter of fact is that they are not fighting each other for the time being.

All of the Dryads are now able to use magic as freely as back in the forests, having adapted to the harsh swamps. You maintain a weak link with the Gods, a link that eases your worries about their faith, just a reminder that they are still there, albeit severely weakened.

A pack of wyverns decided to nest near your tribe, though they seem fairly aggressive, even to you.

>Try to make contact with the lizardmen (Which tribe?)
>Harass the lizardmen via sabotage (Which tribe?)

>>
>>26565502
Try to find out more about their war to see who is winning. Also contact the wyverns with peace. Make sure not to tell them where we are settled, in case they are more aggressive than we think
>>

These, and send Endil with the ones trying to tame the wyverns.

>Oh jeez, I didn't expect the wyverns to snap him up like that, maybe if he had some kind of were-animal to protect him!
>>
>>26565601
This could either go well or very well.
It's a win-win situation.
>>
>>26565502
Contact the wyverns through magical means, using our best and brightest.
>>
>>26565601
Sounds good but Endil is a valuable asset, dissedent or not. Give him a decent escort.
>>
>>26565706
Of course, I don't suggest that we fling him towards the wyverns with a piece of meat tied to him.
We just know he's a good, straight thinking piece-a wood to get the job done all the better!
>>
>>26565706
Ered is the dissident, not Endil.
>>
>>26565706
He is our best beast tamer, I actually want him to succeed.
BUT if he doesn't we have one less nagger that doesn't agree with our plans.
>>
>>26565538
>>26565551
>>26565583
You send Endil and several of the more animal friendly Dryads to speak to the Wyverns.

Binael, a talented scout who is responsible for the most of the intelligence you gathered on the lizard tribes, has been put in charge of an espionage squad of 3 other Dryads. They will infiltrate one of the tribes via the use of magical disguises and charm spells, and gather as much information as they can while spending as little time as possible.

You spend about an hour resting and thinking things over, when Ered decides to approach you to finally talk about the recent events. It seems he has thought things over, as you expect him to.

"Elebril, we must talk. I do not question your ability as a leader, but as your advisor, I must guide you in the right direction to ensure that our people remain safe." He wants to continue, but a bird lands on your shoulder. It lets off a shout, a magical message hidden within, and flies off.

"About 15 lizardmen are approaching our settlement. What do we do?" It is Binael's voice. He could not have reached the lizardmen tribe quite yet, so he probably ran into them along the way. You know not whether he was spotted or attacked, and whether he is in immediate danger or not.

>Let the lizardmen run into your traps, kill them
>Make contact with the lizardmen
>Other

Also, Ered is the druid.
Endil is our Animal Priest, and it's a female. Well, as much as it gets with Dryads.
>>
>>26565772
Finish what Ered was saying first.
>>
>>26565772
Not too many, I say we attempt contact, through fairly remote means.
>>
>>26565772
So sending Endil was the right choice.

>>26565822
Can we send something like a speaking animal to them?
Also even if they have no bad intentions we shouldn't make them feel comfortable. Summon some ominous glow in the dark eyes to lurk around them. (All other traps at the ready as well.)
>>
>>26565852
Yeah, like a bird shouting "FUCK OFF, WE'RE FULL. CUNTS."
Joking aside, some sort of large bird circling above them to make contact, while spooking them out with fog, glowing eyes and noises.
>>
>>26565772
...shit, I was hoping for more time.

Sigh, well, let's send out Ered out and see what they want. Slaughtering a diplomatic envoy is impolite after all.

Send Binael and his spies out to shadow Ered. Best case scenario they get some experience dealing with lizardmen. Worst case they can pry Ered out of a trap.

Oh, and wake up the man eating plants. Something tells me we're going to need them.
>>
>>26565893
edit:

Have Binael shadow the incoming lizardmen and walk to meet the group with Ered.
>>
>2 votes for scaring them off
>2 votes for trying diplomacy
We need a tiebreaker.

Also, how do you archive threads?
>>
>>26565944
Isn't it 2 for diplomacy and 1 for scaring?
>>
>>26565944
Let's see what Ered has to say about this.

"You want to guide our peaple, yes? What do you recommend?"
>>
>>26565960
Actually, you are right. Writing.
>>
You tell Ered to continue with his advice, but he refuses, claiming that it would take too long, and there are more important matters right now. You say that you wish to try diplomacy with the lizardmen, though without making them too comfortable. You put Ered in charge of this mission, who seems to gladly agree, takes a couple Dryads with him and heads off. Meanwhile, you send a message to Binael's group to keep a close eye on the lizardmen, and use magic to make them regret even approaching your lands. Scare them, of course, not kill.

A couple hours later, Ered returns, only one Dryad with him. The druid is missing an arm, which is as black as ash, and still smoking.

"They killed Finaeli... They had a sorcerer with them. He... Panicked, I think." Ered says, supported by his fellow Dryad. "They are incredibly dangerous, Elebril. They... They just dispelled our charms. The greenscaled one was hiding underwater, using enchantment... I... Did not expect..." He collapses into unconsciousness. The Dryad supporting him is using magic to prevent him from dying.

Another message arrives almost immediately, from Binael's group. "We managed to get away unharmed. Helped Ered. Trailing them right now, they changed directions. They are heading to the Wyverns."

>I actually have to go now, getting late for me.
>Next game around the same time, on tuesday.
>Now how do I archive?
