A forewarning: I do not follow the meta-setting of SCP, outlined in the wiki's story entries. Also, some SCP numbers will be changed, removed, etc, to keep things fresh. Expect the unexpected.

Character sheets available on request.

You are Agent James.

You work for the SCP foundation. As an Agent, you are tasked with the retrieval of anomalous items, and the masking of their presence from the world of the unaware. Currently, you have no assignment, but you are being called into the Sub-Overseer's office with Gerald and Kelly for breifing. Seeing as your track record is so clean, you've been allowed to select your mission, usually, from a series of possibilities.

The Sub-Overseer is a tall, thin man, with features that remind you of a hawk. His eyes are sharp behind his glasses, and his suit and jacket are a deep, thick red. The tie has a tie-pin of the Foundation logo, with a ruby set in its center. Sub-Overseers are paid well, and each runs a single Containment Facility. There are four Overseers, as far as you know, and each controls a quarter of the Sub-Overseers. Finally, the Overseers decide sweeping legislation across the CFs by committee.

The Sub-Overseer relaxes in his chair. "Agents. I've called you in for three assignments..."

"First of all, we have heard reports that an abandoned building has been found in the ice beneath the north pole."

"Like an ancient ruin?" Gerald asks.

"Actually no. The construction and the architecture seem to be from this century, if not newer."

"...How can you get newer than now?" Kelly asks.

"I forget how green you are, sometimes, Agent Kelly." the Sub says, and she flushes. "In any case, we also have heard from reports near Japan that one of their smaller islands has literally sunk into the ocean. We are currently stymieing news reports, but would like to get to the bottom of the matter as soon as possible.

"Finally, we have lost all contact, visual, radio, internet, all contact with a high school in Washington."

"...How?" you ask, and he slides you a photograph - a hill road leading to what appears to be a black sphere.

"The area is cordoned off for now, but this is a very visible issue." he says. "It's up to you which of these problems you deal with, agents. But please make your decision quickly."

"It seems the high school is the most urgent. Who knows what's happening to those kids."

The Sub nods, handing you the file, such as it is - it happened a few hours ago.
"Good luck and godspeed." he says.

What will you take with you?

What transit will you use?

What particular questions will you investigate while in the CF regarding the case?

The regular equipment from last thread
Our awesome sword thing
Some better communication devices (preferably sealed from magic or such if that is available)
A deployable flying camera drone (I don't want to fucking walk into the black dome of doom)
A totally inconspicuous minivan with surveillance equipment and some bigger device to contain whatever we find.
Some grunts to order into the meatgrinder.

That would be all.

Standard equipment, our new sword, the usual firepower, a strong electromagnet (Call it a hunch), and some flare guns.

Take the van.

>Has anybody returned?

>Was there anything particularly unusual happening at the school today?
>Any technological disturbances in the area around the sphere?
>>
>>26528230
>>26528281
Combo of these.
>>
>>26528201
It seems so. No matter what form of wave or matter is sent in, it doesn't come back. There has yet to be testing with individuals, however - humans have not been sent in at all, though this is pending report from the local CF and their D-class.

You decide to take a private plane, old-fashioned, but capable of holding a lot - and you take with you your old loadout as well as your new weapon. Going with you is a few D-class, an officer to contain them, and Gerald and Kelly with their own equipment. Kelly, interestingly, has brought with her chemical testing equipment, first-aid, three mindkills, and even a Panacea, though you doubt it's necessity.

You land, and immediately arrange for a minivan, driving to the locale with your equipment and team.

>>26528281
No known disturbances before the event - or oddly, afterwards. People ignored it while being escorted out, or, if need be, eliminated. The most unusual event at the school was a planned skip day by the kids. No known tech was malfunctioning.

The Event ground zero is the school grounds, and the surrounding area. The school is on a hill, surrounded with very tall trees. Beneath the school, at the base of the hill, is a small shopping center, and a spit. (A small land bridge over a large body of water. Thank you, Gerald.)

When you stop, Gerald quickly begins to assess the area for occult activity. Kelly moves to test the chemicals in the nearby water.
>>
>>26528332
Alright, lets ask our people what they think.
>>
>>26528332
Shit, that may render communications inside impossible. I wonder if it absorbs ALL waves, or just the light spectrum?

If we're just twiddling our thumbs while Gerald and Kelly make themselves useful, I suggest we find out how much area the sphere takes of the grounds and possibly a map of the school. I have a feeling we are going to be in complete darkness when we enter.
>>
Sounds to me like a non gravitational black hole, we may be dealing with a universe cross over, we need to chart the area and search for anomolies outside of the sphere
>>
>>26528413
I think it's everything. They probably already tried sending something in that sends back and got nothing. So it absorbs at least a bigger part of the electromagnetic spectrum

>>26528428
I second this. Let's not just go straight in. Search the area, then send in some D-class. We should go in last, if at all.
>>
>>26528457
>then send in some D-class
I think we should poke it with a stick first. Or at least have someone poke it with a stick.
>>
>>26528413
You do a quick estimation - the grounds are average size for a school, and the sphere seems to cover them all.

Though you do notice something unusual as you're charting the area - the trees within the bubble, but poking out the top, are much, much taller than they've any right to be. At least twice the size of their brothers outside it. This makes you frown, as you continue your work.

A map is not hard to acquire, but you doubt it will be much use - the school itself is small, simply laid out, and easy to navigate.

Gerald reports no findings.

Kelly looks uncertain. There's water runoff from the school, but it seems... odd.

"It's very strange. Almost alien. I need time to analyze it properly."
>>
>>26528457
Send a camera first, then a D.
>>
>>26528477
That someone being a D-class, and then he goes in. D-class are our equivalent of sticks.
>>
>>26528477
I was thinking a rock on the end of a string, and tug it back
>>
>>26528483
Kelly, quarantine it and experiment, have a D-Class drink it in somewhere contained.

>>26528492
Do this combined with >>26528499
>>
>>26528483
"Alright, get on that, I'm going to try sending a camera in."

We bought a flying camera drone, right? Let's get that up and running.
>>
>>26528491
It absorbs light. We would just see ADVANCED DARKNESS.
>>26528499
I thought that was moot since it absorbs all matter
>>
>>26528332
Skip day, hm?

I think we should find the one who was organising that. He might have planned this to provide a reason to ditch.
>>
>>26528531
we would find out whether or not we can pull the rock back out, whether it sticks, or if it shears off
>>
>>26528483
So the stuff is not gone, good to know.

>the trees within the bubble, but poking out the top, are much, much taller than they've any right to be
>There's water runoff from the school, but it seems... odd

Oh great, a giant bubble that secretes Sonic hedgehog, not the character, the growth protein.

Yes, there is a growth protein called Sonic hedgehog, and yes it is very important.
>>
>>26528531
We know that it absorbs light. We don't know if it absorbs cameras.
And since it does absorb light, there's a good chance that the "inside", wherever it is, is well lit.
>>
>>26528537
Yes, quite odd. Lets go have a visit, shall we?
>>26528555
>No matter what form of wave or matter is sent in, it doesn't come back
>>26528546
Could be spatial displacement on the trees. Not sure about the mutant water though
>>
>>26528519
She nods and scurries off to do more tests while Gerald watches you assemble the drone.
"That shit ain't gonna work." he says.

"It doesn't have to. It's just going to answer a few things for us." you say, as you start it up. As soon as you fly it into the anomaly, the signal cuts out, dead - at least you think, initially. But something about the video distortion right at the end makes you think. When these things normally die out, they go black instantly. What you got was a scrambled image, then it went black.

"See?"

"No, this is good." you say. "There is no failed experiments. Only data." you take the video onto a disk, and squirrel it away for later. Interesting.

Visiting the kid who organized the skip day yeilds only a shrug and an explanation that it's traditional. Even his mother's class did it.

You can't spot the discrepency here. Something, you think, is obvious, sitting just outside your scope.

I have no idea either, but I bet its something obvious. Something that if we ignore it will have bad consequences.
Think anons, think.

You assign a D-class with walking in, rope tied around his waist tightly. When he enters, the rope goes slack, and when you pull it out, it emerges around a very, very, very bleached set of bones.

Gerald stares.
"Well. That's a result." he says. "Nothing else comin' out?"

"Nothing. Not even what we sent him in in." you mutter.

"..." he frowns. "This is weird as hell."

"...Yes?"

"No, I mean, it's weird for an SCP. Most of these things ain't so fuckin' passive." he grumbles, picking up a long stick and waving it through the anomaly. What he gets back slackens in his hand and falls to the ground like so much ooze. "I mean, what the fuck?"
>>
>>26528817
Oh.
Yeah, accelerated time. Hence the trees.
>>
>>26528817

I don't even know what we can do about this, but we'll probably need a large amount of gold

>>
>>26528926
Gold doesn't react. You let it sit for a million years and nothing really happens to it, so it's the only thing that won't need to be immediately replaced upon touching the anomaly, or maybe just as coatings
>>
It's probably a good idea to try and figure out the rate of time passage inside.
Pocket watch on a stick?
>>
>>26528937
>>26528951
That's not how cameras work.

>>26528962
But that's not going to help us, like at all.
>>
>>26528871
How the hell would you move it?

>>26528842
The trees are in the same place, of course. But then you notice something else - while they are taller, they aren't growing at the rate skelefication would suggest. They're just bigger.

Gerald hums 'let's do the time warp again', then chuckles.
"Interesting."

You rub your chin as Kelly comes back.
"I know why the water's weird."

"It's from the future?" you ask.

"Yes? How..."

You point at the skeleton. "Oh." she says. "Well, that's the odd thing, the water is about ten years further along. I think. It's hard to be accurate with something so fiddly as this."

>Get another drone with a high speed camera.

You order one right away.

Something about this assumption of simple time acceleration is bothering you.
>>
>>26528947
at the same time, we could get SOMETHING out of it

>>26528976
Au contrare, it will confirm our beleifs about it being and temporal accelerant (tm)
>>
>>26528985
SCP is choosing humanoids more than anyone else.
>>
>>26528962
The only way this could be used in this research is making gold chains to make sure they don't decay after whatever is exposed to the anomaly stays there for prolonged periods of time.
>>
>>26528976
if you made a clock out of gold you could stick it in and pull it out to gauge the time without serious deteriorating, but carbon dating would work better most likely
>>
>>26528985
It's odd that the sphere is solid black if the anomaly just accelerates time. Light should be able to pass through.
>>
>>26528963
It moves VERY fast, that D-class was in there for a few seconds and his clothes decomposed, since they are probalby cheap and made of large quantities of plastic.

Better look at this bones and analyze via carbon dating.
>>
>>26529012
it is passing through. its just not reflecting
>>
>>26529012
If the sphere affects the passage of time, it also affects the speed of light. I don't know if it should be entirely black, but I don't think you should be able to watch what's behind it normally, either.
>>
>>26529027
Didn't see that post fast enough >>26528985
Disregard what I said.

Let's wait for the drones results.
>>
Anyone know about how long it takes for light to decay outside of the visible range?
>>
>>26528985
Maybe it's not a time acceleration field, but a segment of the future superimposed on our time?

If that's the case, putting something into the field would cause it to instantly become it's future self, rather than just accelerating it.

Do we have a camera that we think would last ten years?
>>
>>26529012
What if it's in fact emitting intense radiation and the wavelength is just too short to see because it's blueshifted?
>>
>>26529051
That's an idea.
>>
>>26529051
we would never be able to power it for that long in such a short span of time
>>
>>26529012
It's possible that time accelerates faster to infinity the farther in you get, hence the light never travels back out past a certain point.

Might be why we can get cameras to record a little way in.

>>26529051
Future overlaying the present brings up a lot of odd things, like the possibility of time loops.
Things happen in/because of the sphere because the sphere appeared there X years ago?
>>
>>26529049
~5 billion light years of travel , starting at high intensity blue. (Light doesn't experiece time). This is clearly not what is happening here.

>>26529067
Then we'd be cooked. Trust me, you would notice.
>>
>>26528985
>>How the hell would you move it?
With a fan.
Have we found out if air goes through it or moves the sphere yet?

It's SCP, it doesn't have to make sense.
We need to figure out a way to either do:
1) Kill it
2) Move it

>>
>>26529121
How about c) make it less noticeable (e.g. shrink it) and contain it on-site?
>>
>>26529051
>Maybe it's not a time acceleration field, but a segment of the future superimposed on our time?

!

This... Seems more likely. You stand up, staring at the sphere.

"Ten years of growth for the trees. Ten years of starvation for our friend here." you tap the bones with your foot. "Ten years for the camera. Ten years for the stick. And the water runoff." you say, nodding. "It makes sense. But why was it ignored?"

"That's a damn good question." Gerald mutters. "Unless there's a memetic virus attatched? Or the Foundation is trying a new gas." he adds lamely, "And didn't fucking tell anyone. It's happened."

"But what do we DO with it?" Kelly says. "And what about those kids?"

"Anyone who goes in there isn't coming out for at least ten years by their own reckoning." you say, "And I don't think anyone but D-class want that."
>>

>>
>>26529213
>>26529213
pretty sure the time pass is near instantaneous and not actually percieved, or the guy would have retreated and reported
>>
>>26529158
Well, if the effects are consistent with what we know, the kids are probably dead; Even if they had food inside, it probably wouldn't last 10 years, even if the time distortion just locks you inside instead of just effecting the time upon you.
>>
>>26529158
All we need now is a chronometer and a rig to pass it through the very edge of the sphere at different speeds.

Then we will have confirmed that we still have no idea what to do about this.
>>
>>26529248
Maybe an apparatus inside is causing the anomaly, we need to send something inside to retrieve, deactivate or destroy it.
>>
>>26529233

An arrow strikes the car he's pulled you behind, bouncing off, then another embeds into a tree just behind it.
"Fucking hell, we shoulda known better!"

>"ID targets and drop 'em!"
"Can't see shit, sir. He's inside a black sphere, remember?"
>>
>>26529413
Well at least now we know that it is livable inside.

After he runs out of food, or we somehow kill him, we can see about sending in some more who are chained to a point outside the zone of effect, with a secondary chain/cord linked to a journal sent with them.

We wait a bit, then pull both out.

If we can't retrieve the D class, we might be able to communicate via sending in a chained journal with messages and pulling it back out again, making sure the materials are decently long-lasting.

We could even try this if we are unable to kill the one in there now.
>>

right, use the sword then

"Seems that way. God knows, what happened with..." he does some mental calculations, "Jesus christ, there's at least a thousand people in there, for fuck's sake. And plenty adults... Good lord." he mutters. "Imagine what he fucking told them, man?"

"What... Gerald, what are you talking about?"

"Call the fucking CF, we need some pants-shitting backup is what!"

"This is a motherfucking emergency, goddamnit! There's a tiny army in there!"

Kelly looks to be on the verge of panic. Gerald is approaching it.

"Yes. Yessss." she nods. "Get enough and you could knock the whole school on its ass for a while. Long enough for us to pull out and secure the area."

"But if we gas them, who fired the-"

Gerald punches out a strong, pale young man who mounts the car.
"Those guys." he says. "They're coming out. They know it's safe to cross now."

"Should we call in a task force?"

"Something this big, they'll bring in Omega." he says. "You want that?"

And so he spins the story - apparently they were found in an old-folks home, and wanted to be found by the Foundation. The securement was easy. Almost like they were recruited, not caught.

>>
>>26531023
Ffffffffffffuuuuck

Can our sword cut ghosts?
>>
>>26531023

Looks like the Broken Hand implanted a mole into the ranks of our CF division and now a previous encounter we murked a while back has acquired an SCP that resurrects him into an omniscient entity.

Well, fuck.
>>
>>26531162
I was just thinking that
>>
>>26531070
and some were deep in that place the player is running for his fucking life
>>
>>26531162
I think it can cut anything we can visualize cutting.

So if he tries to appear as a ~Spooky~ ghost, we can chop his intangible ass in half, but if he just shows up as a disembodied voice, we cant do anything.

Of course, we could be totally wrong about the sword and it just cuts like a normal blade, but it's fun to speculate.

I thought it went pretty well, really. The ideal is for the players to take a little while working things out, since it isn't fun if it's too obvious, but it also isn't fun if the players absolutely can't work it out.

>>26531537
There are failsafes in place for everything. However, no failsafe is a complete defense when you're dealing with SCPs, particularly if there is a mole within the containment facility who can help things along by sabotaging critical components.
>>
>>26531740
Most of the containment cells are of physical nature. Without power the ton heavy gates just can't get lifted.
However there is some stuff that needs energy to be contained.
>>
>>26531777
The Broken Hand's whole deal is freeing SCPs, so I wouldn't be surprised if they had means of bypassing or destroying physical containment measures.
