A forewarning: I do not follow the meta-setting of SCP, outlined in the wiki's story entries. Also, some SCP numbers will be changed, removed, etc, to keep things fresh. Expect the unexpected.

You are Agent James.

You work for the SCP foundation. As an Agent, you are tasked with the retrieval of anomalous items, and the masking of their presence from the world of the unaware. Currently, your assignment is to enter a small town in Oregon, based on reports of strange magnetic signatures and radio waves coming from a forest.

You are currently en route to the location, driven by a fellow agent - Your partner, Gerald. It is common for Agents to work in teams of as few as 2 and as many as 5, assuming they all perform ably. The drive is quiet - it gives you time to mull over your abilities.

This is a simple d6 based system, where 4 or better is a success and difficulty is based on successes needed. 1d6 is base, each point adds another d6 to the pool.

Distribute four points among the following:

Speaking: (Speaking well, whether it be bluffing, charismatic speech, and so on.)
Shooting: (Good aim, gun care, and the like. Can extend into melee with some weapons, like a longarm rifle.)
CQC: (Offensive and defensive combat.)
Covert: (Lockpicking, sneaking, simple sabotage.)
New skill: (Outline your own and put a point in this.)
>>
>>26468303

Speaking: Point here. Point here.
Shooting: Point here.
CQC: No point here. Most SCP are deadly in melee to the ridiculous degree.
Covert: Point here.

Good at getting where we need to be, and if need be we can defend ourselves.
>>

Two speaking, one firearms, one covert.

You remember now: You're the face. Gerald's the one who can wrestle a biker to the ground with ease. He's big, his suit specially tailored to his overlarge frame (six foot six, a couple hundred pounds of muscle). He likes shotguns, you like revolvers. He likes rockabilly, you like orchestral. You get along well because the mission comes first and always does.

The disturbance began a few weeks ago, you recall from the briefing, alongside a few disappearances. Superiors believe it to be a creature, as the signal is moving, but also admit there is no predicting it. You loaded out with your Colt and a few boxes of ammo, a simple Nagant (though you have personally tended to it with care - it's a relic from the old war, after all.) and more ammo with it. You've also brought amnesiacs, some smelling salts, and a Mindkill.

Mindkill is a unique drug that makes one nonsentient for a few hours. Its primary use is against memetic threats, but it can be used in other ways. However, it is incredibly costly to produce, requiring the use of an SCP in the process that takes time to reuse.

Gerald has opted for combat armor, a sanctified longsword, a silver dagger, and an AA-12 with ammo. You don't question this decision either. It's part of what makes you a good team.

"Hotel or motel?" he asks. Continued.
>>
It's more important a decision than one might think: Hotels are more comfortable, more safe, and in general nicer - but motels are EVERYWHERE, and allow for more quiet entry and departure. Gerald usually lets you make the decision and always has.

You're approaching the town now. Gas stations are showing up, and the road has sidewalks.
>>
>>26468484
Why would we stay anywhere?

What type of vehicle are we using?
>>
>>26468484
Unless we can sleep in the car, I say motel. More discreet. One of those "no questions asked" kind of places.
>>
>>26468484
We stay at the motel. We've always been very mindful of our budget and of hiding our tracks. Cash only.
>>
>>26468504
>>26468506
We're going to have to drive to wherever this thing is anyway. Why expose ourselves unnecessarily?
>>
>>26468515
Decent sleep is important for clarity of mind and that can't be had in the car.
>>
>>26468515
We're already going to be MiB flashing every civvy involved. Not saying to go crazy and not give a fuck about concealment, but we don't need to be like some kind of ghost ops either, and if we're planning on doing that we should have picked something that wasn't speaking for our 2skill.
>>

>>
OP we need more information here.

1.) Where are we going?
2.) Do we have any means of tracking our quarry?
3.) Do we have any support whatsoever?

For starters.
>>

That. Also please ask for input at the end of an update or give options or it won't be too clear where we are going.

>>
>>26468557

>>
>>26468515
>>26468495
You /are/ using a van. Assuming you do shifts, you and Gerald can sleep in the back, while the other drives, guards, and other things. However...

>>26468527
>>26468506
>>26468504
Good sleep and a bed are important. While the Foundation has many, many, MANY Containment Facilities, it's been a four hour drive and you ache a bit. You think a bit more.

Another factor you've not considered yet is that a motel or hotel don't count as a house or a home - before departure, Gerald had bought, slept in, ate in, and - you think - had a good time with a secretary named Alice in the back. According to your occult experts, it counts as a dwelling now and has a 'threshold'.

>>26468560

1.) Where are we going?
Near to a large forest in Oregon. It's near to old-growth.

2.) Do we have any means of tracking our quarry?
None yet - you do not know enough and the equipment required was over weight limit and too unweildy.

3.) Do we have any support whatsoever?
Yes and no. If you can reach a Containment Facility, you can assume full medical care and asylum no matter your actions. However, if you cannot, contact to such locations is ONLY if they are in direct danger - such as an anomalous being/object bearing down on it. You're on your own, and have authority equal to an NSA ranking member otherwise.

Legally, it's Dr. McNinja rules: Reach a CF, and you're fine. Otherwise, only 'rank' protects you.

There are multiple SCPs based on magic and shit. Just because the foundation tries a scientific approach doesn't make it not occult.

There are multiple SCPs that are harmed by belief. The shadow things in the hell barn that rips out hearts and the one airplane that does something bad unless people believe hard enough (it's been a couple years since I read it) come to mind

>>26468642

You get a Motel, and Gerald nods, rummaging in the glove compartment.
"Salt it up. I'm gonna look around town and see if I can't get together some food." he says.

"Once you're back, I'll be taking the van."

"Why?"

"Gotta ask around and check co-ords." you reply. "Find the nearest CF and speak with some folks about the vanishings."

He nods.
"'kay. Stay safe."

He drops you off, and you inspect the room. A simple bath, a window looking out, one entrance, and one bed.

Shit. Oh well, you're not all that big. You get to work on 'salting up' and securing the locale, when your phone rings. It's your home CF, who sent you out here, by a proxy piggyback phone. You pick up.

"Agent. We have new information regarding the anomaly. It's moving towards your current position, though slowly, and the movement has been sporadic."

The line fuzzes out and dies.

>>
>>26468726
>I find it funnier that the "dumb muscle" is our spellslinger.

I like that too. And who says "occult" in SCP means spell slinging? It could very well be just knowledge about the rules behind seemingly supernatural phenomenons. You know, "we can't explain it with science but we have derived these methods and procedures to deal with them".

A simple multimeter should do. Or any kind of radiowave reciever aka an antenna.
>>
>>26468791
The final answer is : We do not know.
That is why Worst Case Scenarios are made for.

On what we Do know, thus, there is only this :
-We are looking for a Sentient lifeform, which might be aware of our position and role. The movement pattern suggest a lone predator, strong enough to win with 2:1 odds against him without doubting, and clever, as it tries to be stealthy.
Which mean that it might know about our position but not about our technological assistance.

>>Beast, Stealhy, Strong.
>>
For what we know at the moment we should have some useful equipment,
knowing the anomaly is magnetic in nature and emits radio waves, we at least need a radio and a device to measure magnetism?
>>
>>26468766
Paranoia strikes.

You've learned over many missions to remain calm and to listen to your instincts. Your hand flashes towards your belt and you dial up Gerald.

"Yeah?"

"We've a problem. It's moving, and it can cut off transmissions. Remember how base said we wouldn't need a multimeter or an antenna?"

"Yeah, the disappearances hinted at occult."

"Buy them. I'm making the call on this."

"Righto. Anything else?"

"Be careful - avoid traffic lights, if you can. Stay in the van until you get here."

"Right. I'll also look into getting a guitar."

"...What?"

"Outside case."

"...Alright."

There's been two times when Gerald's 'outside case's have proven useful: Once against a horse made of wheels, and again with a house that was slowly losing weight but not mass.

But he always has some, every mission. You've learned to allow him his minor foibles.

"On my w-"

The line fuzzes and cuts.

>Wait
>Leave
>Call
>>
>>26468750

We should also SHUT. DOWN. EVERYTHING. that isn't needed, electronics wise. Electronic manipulation can go a long way. Time deposit our cellphones and watches at the reception after drawing protective runes all over them.

>>26468765
>And who says "occult" in SCP means spell slinging?
Nobody, it probably is the kind of magic system that mainly deals with curses and not pissing off spirits.
> You know, "we can't explain it with science but we have derived these methods and procedures to deal with them".
Exactly. Again, I like that our partner isn't just good at hitting things till they stay dead, even if it seems his preferred past time. Makes the dynamic more interesting.
>>
>>26468876
Assuming the first call was interference with phone lines, and this one is direct cellular interference, the critter must be fairly close. it'd be a waste to attempt reconnection. Wait a while longer. When Gerald arrives, move cautiously to meet him, making sure to signal caution.

Gentlemen.
NOW you're thinking SCP.
>>
You move around the apartment, shutting down various equipment. Even your phone. The connection cutoffs were disconcerting. That done, you sit on the bed and care for your longarm, taking your time. Halfway finished, Gerald enters, holding a breifcase.

"Your detection equipment." he says. He unslings the guitar with a smile. "And my Fender." he chuckles. "Anyway. Next suggestion? I'm thinking we should hit up the police."

"It's close, I think. Moving into civilization. We might need to send in a cleanup crew afterwards."

He grunts.
"Have you been checking the radio?"

"No, why?"

"Well, I was in town, and one gas station guy was complaining that he was getting tired of Hendrix."

"What do you mean by that?"

"He said something about the channel being hijacked or something. And creepy hosts. Something..." he taps his forehead. "Was odd. But it's just a feeling."

You grunt. That seems a bit too convenient.

Where do you go from here?
>>
Also as soon as our partner gets back (IF he comes back) with both the multimeter and the antenna/radio we should
1. Hook the multimeter up to some power socket and measure any fluctuations/changes. Power is very closely regulated so any change at all would be a strong indicator that something is happening.
2. Turn on that radio, tune into a station and slowly turn it 360 degrees, if we get a particulary bad/strange signal in one direction we know where its coming from.

The question is, does it influence what is played to accomplish what it wants or does it do this stuff in reaction to something being played?

"SHIT!" you attempt to wrench the wheel, but the car just doesn't change course as you skirt traffic on the other side of the road, while the radio gets louder, extolling safety in cars while yours seems to be trying its damndest to kill you. "Can you bail at this speed?!"

"Yeah, fuck, man!"

"DO IT!" there's a loud snap as some of the plastic around the wheel's housing cracks. "I won't be able to get control...!"

He unbuckles, and turns to kick - and the vehicle stops from a full 60. Gerald grabs the dash and merely suffers a hard blow to the head.
"Godfucking hell." he stabs the radio with a knife and the sounds of another song slowly die out.

"Damn shame, that was -"

"Purple Haze?" you ask.

"How'd you guess? That was like nine fuckin' notes." he looks up at the rolling bank of deep fog. "oh."

"It's in there." you say, as something blue flashes inside the cloud, and above the bank, in the distance, is an antenna.

Slowly, Gerald recites the Lord's Prayer while loading his AA-12, one shell at a time. You know that this efficiently and quickly blesses the ammo on a minor level, but you think Gerald simply does it because he enjoys doing things that way.

"So how do we get to the station?" Gerald asks as he sights the gun.

Most pieces from and after the romance period actually use a motif with slight variations that uses around five different notes in total and can be discerned by listening to the first seven, AFAIK. Rock, RnB and Hip Hop especially.

"Can't use phones or radios nearby." you say. "Stay away from any cars, or the like.

And that's when the van's radio turns on. "Son of a bitch." you mutter, as it gets the knife too, before anything can play.

"Fuckin' bullshit." he growls. "If that's the rules, then we can play too. We need to get to that music store."

"You can't be serious." I manage. "Do you really think that'll work?"

"Can't hurt to try, right? I've got the Fender here, after all."

"You're really going to try and have a rock off with... this... this thing."

He shrugs.
"I won a race against a wheelhorse. Which, we've determined, was actually a mispelling in the Book of Things."

After all, the gas station blew, right? But not us. We were listening to the same time. And Cars, not all the cars rammed into each other."

"So..."

"I'm fucking stalling. Bring yourself some Mindkill and try to kill the power to the station." he says, tossing you the case. "This shit is pretty nebulous. It's not an entity, I think." he says, "More of... Well, a broadcast, I guess."
He rises and dashes into the music store, coming out with a huge speaker and a series of extension cables.

He plugs it in...

"Only one song for this." he says, playing. "Tenacious D, don't fail me now."

As he opens, the fog... condenses, and lightning arcs to the hands of a humanoid figure - forming an instrument.

Okay, time to get the fuck out. You run into the fog, deep inside, letting it surround you as you move in further. After a few minutes, you look around. It's hard to see, but the figure of the broadcast tower looms.

And there's Cash again, somber and quiet. Wait. You know this one.

Her weight shifts on her shoe.

Shiff.

And then you lower your gun. Right into her gut, hard, as you duck. Her gun fires by accident, slamming the bullet into her ally's shoulder. He has no gun, so you spin, bringing the butt up to her neck hard. She stumbles, and you crack the handle against the back of her hand. The gun clatters to the ground and your foot slams on it as she chokes. You spin, raising it to your shoulder again.

"Last chance, Hand. Give me the damn record, or I shoot you and her now."

"You'll shoot us anyway." he says with contempt. "You'll shoot us both, wipe the town of memories and write it off as a fuckin' gas leak."

You stare each other down.

"Swear it. Swear you'll let us go. No drugs, no shootin'."

"I'll meet you halfway. I won't shoot you if I can help it, but I cannot allow a bunch of witnesses to run loose."

"...You're lying."

"You know this is a better damn deal than I can ever give you, reasonably."

"It is, isn't it?" he asks. "Fine. Take it." he says. "But there's more of us."

"Oh, yes." you say. "There's a lot of rats in New York."

He blinks. "What-"

Your rifle fires with a stunning report, kicking in your hand as the girl screams. Then your revolver goes off, and her body slips over.

No witnesses, if you can help it. No Broken Hand, if you can help it.

Secure.

Contain.

Protect.

You take a deep breath as you walk over to the drawers and pull one open, revealing a slim, padded briefcase. In this, you set the record, which has no title except in strange, alien writing. Clicking the clasps shut, you breathe in slowly through your nose. Well. You aren't a total asshole. You pick up the note in the young man's pocket. A prayer, meant to be read by his allies. You muster your voice and speak with all the reverence you can manage.

"I am the Broken Hand. Beaten, bloodied, bruised. I stand for freedom, for slipping free my cuffs, even if I must shatter my bones to do so. Agency is not freely given. Nor is it stolen. It is made. And I am the hammer. I am the chisel. I am the marble. May I find freedom beyond this place."

You toss the paper onto his chest.
"Amen."

>>
>>26471388

Call your partner, seal off the building, call cleanup crew search the bodies in the meantime, think about how you'll fill out the forms for this one.

You pick up the briefcase, then turn to see Gerald.

He looks at the Broken Hands.

"Shit. Why is it you kill every pretty bitch we meet?"

You shrug.
"She was part of the Hand."

He grumbles something about mindkill and amnesiacs, but looks at the briefcase.
"That it?" he asks.

"That's it. And your match?"

he laughs, holding up his thumb and forefinger, or at least where they were. Now it's bandaged, with a lot less mass than he started with.
"Went better than expected, but I should have brought a pick. So how we handling the aftergame?"

"Burn the broken hand bodies. They prefer immolation, if I remember correctly. We need to get to the dealership in town and get a new van, then get to the local CF. The town will need some amnesiac agent for a while. After that, it's cut and dry."

He nods.
"Shame we had to kill them, though."

You shrug.
"Chose the wrong side." you say simply, as you walk out with Gerald.

MISSION

>>

>>
>>26471441
Hell yeah. We handled that pretty well.
So far 1/1 jobs done.

So are we doing another one?
Right now or tomorrow?

Or just tell us where you want to go with this, I really like it so far.
Are you going to keep this mission based or will there be an overarching plot?
>>
>>26471441

Lets feed Gerard our EXP so he'll be super strong and protect us!
>>
>>26471455
they have task forces for this
Mobile Task Force Gamma-5 (aka "They're on our side, Sir!"): Public misinformation and damage control. Currently working undercover in various media sources to cover up Foundation activity.
>>
>>26471530
Exactly. No need to gas the town. Besides, that's not out job as indicated by the MISSION COMPLETE.
We just call some number and let the foundation handle the cleanup.
>>
>>26471530
and

Mobile Task Force Iota-10 (aka "Damn Feds"): Assigned to intercept SCP-related reports and disrupt SCP-related investigations by local law-enforcement agencies.
>>
>>26471496
Mission based and episodic, if I can. It's an easy format, and it makes it easier to run so new players can slide in.

I don't know when I'll be running, though. If you're in the #ques/tg/enerals channel on rizon on irc, I'll drop a warning there, if I can. 'Flexible hours' means, in general, that I cannot have a schedule that stretches further than three or four days.

There might be a plot, or arcs, later. I wasn't expecting such success, and I am thinking that more complicated SCPs might take multiple episodes.

Feedback is loved, by the way. What, exactly, was done well or poorly, and so on.
>>
>>26471441
Nicely done, OP. I had a lot of fun with this thread, can't wait for the next installment
>>
>>26471578
Very nice. I'd love to have a quest like that, something that you can hop in that happens every two days or so. With all the material and general craziness you can come up with new episodes for us easily. Well, assuming you have the time of course.

So far I liked it, being our first mission and all. A good introduction to how things work and how you take our input.
What I'd like for further episodes is getting that feeling of danger that surrounds many SCPs. I mean look at the stuff they have contained, it must've been horrible to capture some of them.
But that can come later, as well as a plot. Just take your time.
>>
Enjoyed the quest. Hopefully it will blossom into something beautiful.

More dangerous missions will involve more Agents and even disposable guys, most likely. I do plan on some, but I need something more solid than "lol big monster". There will be three types of mission (but you won't know which when you're in them): Capture (find a sentient SCP in a community) Contain (Like this one, a larger force) Kill (Nonsentient, noncapturable, but stoppable.). The first two will likely be more investigative in nature.

Oh, and if someone can make these and put them in the wiki (the SCP we're capturing in these threads) somehow, without it being too obvious, that'd be awesome.
>>
>>26471764
That all sounds really good. I love me some investigating. /tg/ comes up with the craziest things. 2/3 investigating and 1/3 fighting sounds like a good balance.

I must say I'm really looking forward to this.

>Oh, and if someone can make these and put them in the wiki (the SCP we're capturing in these threads) somehow, without it being too obvious, that'd be awesome.
Didn't they close down the wiki recently because there were too many crap entries? I think you can now only make new entries if you've been approved or something.

Also can you drop us a time and date for the next thread? I don't usually lurk the irc or have that much time, but if you could tell us now I can take that time off.
>>
>>26471764
My only piece of advice is that you shouldn't be afraid of killing off our character if we fuck up badly. While we bonded with James and Gerald, the best kind of quest is where every action has it's consequences. And I'm not saying "lol SCP 682 breaks out and rapes you to death", but rather that if we go into a dangerous situation and mess up too many dice rolls our luck runs out.

Some people may not like it, but I enjoy quests (and other games) where the stakes are realistically high and that death is an ever present danger. Keeps me on my toes.

Still, good job.
>>
>>26471578
It was done pretty well.

The best advice I can give is to remember that a mission based and episodic format does not mean that there can't be an overarching plot.
>>
>>26471855
>Also can you drop us a time and date for the next thread?
Sad to say I can't. I have tomorrow off, but I'll probably have shit to do. And I don't know my schedule next week. Augh. But, hopefully, you'll catch it, or the archived. Sorry.
>>
>>26471876
Yeah this.
It also prevents us from going into silly mode, you have to be careful though there are these "hilarious" trolls that come into quests that actually have consequences that then suggest stupid shit that gets you killed.
Please try to ignore them.
>>
>>26471764
Perhaps have some sort of character power progression alongside the character development? Successful missions = credits = resources to use on future missions. Larger retinue, advanced equipment, higher intel access, that sort of thing. I'd like to see a base episode every now and again, sort of a simulation of life in an SCP facility, making the rounds, interviewing containees, that sort of thing.
>>
>>26471947
don't forger the breaches
>>
>>26471947
I second this. Success should be rewarded.
Maybe give us a choice in what equipment we can buy with creds. You know, normal helpful stuff or crazy experimental Foundation technology that might or might now work and really, we are more like test subjects for that thing.
>>
>>26471995
bouncy ball-powered super boots.
I like it
>>
>>26472032
>Ah my two favorite agents have returned from another mission
>as a special reward for your outstanding success the facility overseer has decided to give you access to this experimental technology
>did I mention its absolutely free, haha
>no, no strings attached of course
>well, we don't really know how it works though
>just report back when you've found out
...
>hey Jeff, how many hours do you give them?
>>
>>26471578

Things done well
+The way the setting was utilized
+The SCP choice
+Music
Things done poorly:
-Pacing
-Initial direction (lack of, or so it seemed)
-Length because WAY TOO SHORT AAaaaaah~

End score: 7/10, definitely above average.
Waiting Warmly For It To Get Continued™.

>>26471876
In this case it would be quite appropriate, yes.
>>
>>26471947
Yeah, I'd eventually like to see a full team decked out in experimental technology, veterans of dozens of missions, sent out to on the most dangerous assignments. Or rather, I don't want to see it, because it's the journey to that point that matters in a quest. Lofty but attainable goals help keep things moving and give a real sense of progress as you pace towards them.

Also, downtime threads, interviews, research , recruitment/training and breach containment sounds good as well.
>>
>all that potential
>all those ideas

Oh boy you sure started something.
This idea has sparked so much interest that you might not be able to contain it.
>>

I think special equipment should mostly be kept to the minimum necessary. If the SCP need us to be equipped with lazer eyes, the foundation will surely give those to us. Otherwise, not so much. Maybe the odd trinket or two as a reward, but not too much.

We will of course get assigned to more dangerous missions which require more powerful items if we rank up.

In the format of short stories or SCP entries? Frankly, there's not a lot to go on for this SCP for an entry. It was a disc, that somehow manifested as a demon to banjo-duel an agent.
>>
>>26471855
>Didn't they close down the wiki recently because there were too many crap entries? I think you can now only make new entries if you've been approved or something.

Yeah, only registered users on the site can post articles, but you only have to jump through a couple of hoops and it's honestly not all that difficult to get in.
