My idea for the sequel:
Some smart guys assumed, that if the aliens could open up one worm hole, they can do it again.
So in order to get around the 'only kaijus can cross the rim' they worked on creating new bio-jäger (hello eva), that could cross to the other side and fuck the aliens shit up real good.

I actually think I have a working headcanon for why the EMP didn't fuck up Gipsy.

She's 'analog' as in, direct hardware input processing (move the leg like this, the leg moves like this), no software involved (no 'leg makes motion this and this, actuate servos this and this to this degree). As such, when she's shut down, there's no data for the EMP to wipe or have an effect on. No fly-by-wire. If she'd have been active when the EMP hit, it WOULD have fried her.

>Hell, even blowing up the reactor is less physics raping than is often stated.
YOU FUCKING TAKE THAT BACK

No seriously you *cannot* blow up a nuclear reactor like a nuclear bomb. If you even think about bringing up Fukushima or Chernobyl...
>>
>>26427990
>>26427966
Yeah, all the Mark 1 Jaegers ran off Nuclear power or something along those lines.
>>
>>26428018
The way he set it implied that it was designed to be detonatable, some kind of future reactor where that's possible is far from the worst physics in here.
>>
>>26428019
Gipsy was Mk 3, right?
>>
>>26427966

Seems likely; another possibility is that the older nuclear powered Jaegers had EM hardened hardware to protect vital systems from the pwoer source, whereas the newer ones like Striker didn't require it (thus getting fucked over by the first Kaiju to use an EMP).
>>
>>26428032

Gipsy after she's rebuilt is some kind of Mk 3/5 hybrid. The chain sword for example is a new addition. It's said that she's one of a kind in the movie itself.
>>
>>26428018

I really wish I could find the New Scientist article for this, but we have accidentally caused a true nuclear explosion (as opposed to the effective dirty bombs of the two you mentioned) in a nuclear reactor before. Think it was somewhere in Eastern Europe, didn't get massively publicised because it was relatively small and didn't irradiate everything (unlike Chernobyl). Also, given that he had a button for it, >>26428030 is probably on the money.
>>
>>26428053
Weren't literally all of the Jaegers one-of-a-kind?
>>
>>26428030
In that case you would basically have a nuclear bomb strapped to the side of a nuclear reactor. It's like designing an oven that can also be used for welding; whilst both uses involve heat, they're dissimilar you can't meaningfully combine any of their features.
>>
>>26427823
Oh man this picture. The art style reminds me of Samurai Jack, and all I can think of is Gendy tartatovsky and del toro making a prequel animated series about Cherno Alpha HNNNNNNNGG
>>
>>26428062

No, it's blatantly stated that Cherno is part of a mass produced series in side material. I believe that so is Horizon Brave.

Striker is/was probably a Mk 5 prototype/proof of concept specced up to full capability after they bailed on the Jaeger program.
>>
>>26428032
2 I thought

Mark I's were the solo pilots, Mark II was cherno alpha and gipsy
>>
>>26428062
Striker was a prototype, I believe. Crimson, Cherno, and Gipsy were all production models at their base.
>>
>>26427921
Del Toro stated that he chose those titles due to them evoking the classic Western and not really having anything to do with the modern military. As a pacifist, he wanted it to be clear that it wasn't an army or military saving the world. Just A Few Good Men.
>>
>>26428078

This also explains Mr. Hero didn't seem to use those swords until Mako popped them at the end of the movie
>>
>>26428062
iirc each country put it's own 'spin' on the jaegers, but there were clear production lines in terms of 'era'.

Mark Is used 1 pilot, were dangerous tot hat pilot and not great

Mark IIs were like Gipsy, dual pilots, pretty gewd.

Marks 3-5 just got better over time in terms of abilities and movement. That's the reasons triker and the chinese one are so quick and nimble and look less bulky
>>
>>26428090
It was never him that was the problem.

She knew that jaeger top to bottom but 'forgot' the fucking sword?
>>
>>26428085
Crimson wasn't quite mass-produced I think, unless there were a whole of Ranger Triplets.
>>
>>26428100
To be fair, it's stated heavily that she's a total green newb. She probably didn't 'forget', but let him take the lead in terms of fighting. And he was used to punching dudes in the face like the american bad ass he was.
>>
It's a shame the Pacific Rim game was so bad. Even though pretty much all movie games suffer the same fate, but this one had so much potential ;_;
>>
>>26428095

No, you're wrong.

Mark 0 was single pilot, proven to not be capable of functioning, all were upgraded to Mark 1 specs with dual pilot capacity. Biggest flaw was no radiation shielding for the crew. Coyote Tango and Cherno Alpha are mark 1s though Cherno was upgraded vast amounts over time.

Mark 2 had the radiation shielding added, but little else.

Mark 3 is Gipsy Danger's gen, the last of the nuclear powered ones.

Mark 4 is Crimson Typhoon, the 'let's see if this design works' period, though there are more sensible and traditional designs than Crimson.

Mark 5 only has Striker Eureka, probably as the proof of concept. Used bleeding edge tech, compared to mark 4 Jaegers. Same relation to mark 4 as mark 2 to mark 1.
>>
>>26428120
Del Toro's pushing his own. Got pissed at the suits and decided he should get behind one so that is isn't terrible.
>>
>>26428106
>at their base

Cherno wasn't exactly a Mk 1, either. It had been continually upgraded over the years.

It really shows, when comparing Pacific Rim to 2007's Transformers

Transformers was made by a misanthrope who had no attachment to the project, wanted to cash in some good money and jerk off to his armyman fetish

Pacific Rim was made by a humanist who loved the genre since he was a child, wanted to do the best job possible, and share it with the world.

It's something that even Red Letter Media picked up on in their review of PacRim. And amusing enough, their major issue with the movie which they got over to endorse it was a lack of characterization. Funny, given there's three hours of footage that was cut for release that's pretty much entirely character development and interaction. I want that Director's Cut DVD so badly.

Change DVD to BluRay, and I'm there. Imagining all the extra features has me so powered up I could power a Jaeger.

Red letter Media's observation (this world feels so much larger) is a huge boon for a franchise like this. Spin off comics, prequels, sequels, etc - all can be mined out of the "we use Giant Robots to fight Giant Monsters" schtick.

Plus, it warms my inner eight-year-old's heart to imagine kids and neckbeard ucnle like us dreaming up our own Jaegers and forming tag-teams to save the world.

Bravo, Mr. Del Toro. You done good.

You know what I'd like to see? A PacRim game that's like X-Com. You spend 90% of the time trying to research and build your Jaegers from a selection of bases from around the Rim, and in an increasingly shorter period of time, a Kaiju with a pool of semi-randomised abilities, that get more and more outlandish and difficult to deal with as the campaign goes on, attacks.

Yeah... Except Cthulhutech would still have the issue that all their different elements (engels, mechs, magic, etc.) don't work together at all.

One of the reasons I liked Xenogears. Character is a martial artist? They can use martial arts moves in their Gear. Character is a caster? They can cast amplified spells when in their Gear. Though character is a healer = character can remove Gear status effects, but not heal, was actually something I liked... Made it clear that it's a machine.

Never found a game that can adequately replicate the feel. Doesn't even have to be exact, just close enough to feel similar...

And all of my attempts at homebrew fail utterly.

Another thing that Red Letter touched on and that really makes me love Del Toro even more is the theme of the movie. None of the cynicism or flag-waving we've grown used to, but instead the power of teamwork and putting aside differences. Whether its the two competing scientists working together or the two pilots needed for a Jaeger, PacRim is a story about two people coming together, willing to sacrifice their own lives for the greater good. It's a story of friendship, of nobility, and of dedication. Qualities all too rare in a modern Hollywood hero.

Man it'd be awesome. Herc Hanson and Kaidonovsky jr. could have some moments since Herc lost his son and the kid lost his parents.

Seeing as how Cherno Alpha is basically Big O the Jaeger, i wonder what jaegers based on Big Duo and Big Fau would look like.

I would love that. Iron Giant repairs and wakes up to find the town Hogarth had come from is being destroyed by a Kiaju. Sent into a Berserk rage at loss of life he attacks and destroys the Kaiju, but finds out he is too late to save his friend. He somehow ends up in the PPDC and becomes a great line of defense against the alien threat.

Didn't the Iron Giant kick a gigantic dragons ass in the book?
>>
>>26431986
Yup. Great big star dragon.
>>
>>26431821
Iron Giant may be smaller, but his long range weaponry is far more powerful than anything in the pacific Rim universe, although, the acid produced by some Kaiju could fuck him up for good.
>>
>>26432044
Yeah, acid might be a problem although anything else we've seen kaiju do would be at most a temporary setback.
>>

Hogarth was on the east coast

Pacific is on the other side of the country

"MARAUDER is, or was, a United States Government research project. It is an acronym of Magnetically Accelerated Ring to Achieve Ultra-high Directed Energy and Radiation. It was first reported on August 1, 1993.

The objective appears to be the firing of 1 meter diameter toroids of magnetically contained plasma. The toroids behave in a similar manner to spheromak plasma reactors. As of 1993 the project appeared to be in the early experimental stages. The weapon was able to produce doughnut shaped rings of plasma and balls of lightning that exploded with devastating effects when hitting its target. The project's initial success led to it becoming classified and no more details of how it developed after 1993 are available."

CBA to find the Wiki link, but this shit is pretty cool
