You are Lord William Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad and the Norther Valley. Some call you the Iron Lord, as your wealth flows from the arms and armor you sell, and your demeanor is as unflinching and cold as castle-forged steel. Other have taken to calling you “The Grey Giant”, in reference to your great size, less-than-warm demeanor, and your recent marriage to House Tollett of Grey Glen.

You are a Lord by right of Murder, having slain the Targaryen children in the Sack of King’s Landing. After years of solitary brooding, you have decided to rejoin life, You have wedded the lady Alyssa Tollet, meaning that in time the lands of her father, lord Tollet of Gray Glen, will also be yours. Further, your wife has just announced that she is with child.

Which means that you have a legacy to create. You will not leave your child without care or resources, and so you have dived into the management of your lands and holdings, to procure a bright future for yourself and your children. But storm clouds darken the horizon. Tywin Lannister has asked that you seek to supplant Jon Arryn, your liege lord, as Hand of The King. Further, Oberyn Martell has crossed you, and this you will not let go unpunished.

You are currently at the Eyrie, having evaded a band of brigands who sought to seize your lady mother, though the why eludes you. You came in hopes of improving your sister's opinion of you. You have met with the Lord Arryn, and learned that Lord Baelish stays as a guest as well, and has some business with you.

What shall you do next.

Ah, found chapter 10 on foolz!

So it seems like the consensus before we left off was to engage in some small talk with Lord Arryn, to further ingratiate ourselves.

Anyone against this?

Nope

"But enough of such unpleasantness, my lord. We have survived, and that is what counts. Tell me, how fares my Lord Arryn?"

(Rolling for conversation...7. NOPE. USING A DESTINY POINT. 16! Much better. Success with two degrees. You improve Jon Arryn's opinion of you!)

The two of you spend some time in conversation. Lord Arryn seems to appreciate having your blunt view on his dealings and problems, though mostly he laughs and opts for a more moderate response.

He does mention "Lord Bordain, it might behoove you to visit some of your neighbors. It would probably help you lessen their grim opinion of you, as well as open some greater venues for profit."

Next action.

"My lord, I shall waste no time in doing so, for Lord Baelish wishes to speak with me on some matter."
At the mention of Littlefinger, Jon Arryn's face darkens slightly.
"No doubt some plan to earn you a dragon and himself three. Watch your dealings with him, William. He's as motivated as you are, but lacks your honesty."

With that ringing endorsement, you go to see Lord Baelish. You find him in the gardens with Lady Arryn, laughing at some jest she had just made. You recall the two were friends before she came here.

He looks up.
"Ah, Lord William. Finsihed with your talk with the Noble Eagle of the Eyrie?"
You can hear the mocking in his voice, though it stands light enough, and the Lady Arryn laughs.
"Petyr, don't be bad. If he seems so stern, it's because he has so many troubles to deal with."
"Just so, my lady. I wish he would learn to do it with a smile, however."
So saying, he rises, and turns to you.
"I'd like a few minutes of your time, Lord William, to discuss an idea I've had. If you please?"
He gestures, and the two of you retire to his chambers.
"William, I hear you've been hiring up men to manage your finances. Including a Pentoshi merchant. I can see you're a man with a plan to expand," he smiles, seemingly at his own clever rhyming "and I'd like to help you. Our earlier plan to dredge the river ran aground on your wife's keen insight, but I think I've found a workaround. With some funds from you, and a meeting with the Lynderlys, we could form a chain of ports. You have a fleet of small delivery ships to the larger port in Snakeswood, which runs them down to me in Gulltown. At Gulltown, we have a set-up for your men to send your metal abroad, using the existing merchant fleets, or expanding them if we need."
"What say you?"
>>
>>26418947
this is something that we should probably consult our wife with. But let us just tell him that we need a moment to think about this before committing ourselves to his plan.
>>
>>26418947
If we do it his way then he'll most likely to be controlling the sales and the destination of the metal since the fleets won't be under our command. Does our pentosi merchant have a fleet of his own? Maybe he could keep an eye on the exports at Gulltown.
>>
>>26419266
He does have several ships, and could conceivably be instilled as an overseer in Gulltown.

>>26419129

"I must think on this, and discuss it with my wife before I assent."
"Of course, of course. It was her wisdom that stopped my earlier misstep before anyone was harmed. Take some time, and contact me when you reach a decision. If you don't mind, I planned to visit the Lynderlys and make a similar proposition for their lumber. If you wish, you can always join our venture later, my lord. I completely understand caution in your position."

I always thought it was a shame we didn't go for his dredging plan. Sure it limits our fishing capability but we don't have a fishing capability and there's no need to ever have one. We've got more than enough on our plate expanding the mines and associated trading ports, who knows if we'll ever have the time to build up fishing infrastructure (remember our actions per month are limited).

I'd like to discuss the impact of the dredging plan with our financial advisors and maester when we return to Morderengrad.

As for the chain of ports ... it just seems like a way for him to add in a bunch of middlemen all interested in taking a cut (and presumably passing some of that on to him for organising the whole venture) AND giving him control over who our iron is shipped to.

Now part of me wants the dredging even more because that would allow larger ships to depart directly from our port.

Indeed we do.

Does our agricultural output from our lands currently support our military and smallfolk population; or do we import food?
>>
>>26417951
Chapter 10's also on suptg but is almost impossible to find because some dumbass didn't know how to tag.
>>
>>26420160
You "import" food.
Fiefdoms aren't entirely like nations. You have some informal "Give me food, I give you iron" relationships with local lords. Also, as JOn Arryn's Vassal, he is obliged to assist your people if they have need of him.

I don't see anyone opposing talking to Lady Arryn. If no one is, I will proceed with that in a few minutes May I suggest bringing your sister as well?
>>
>>26419941
First of all, we don't know that we import food. Our territory is primarily valley's between mountains, not just mountains, so we have plenty of space for farming. We also have more land from our dear wife.

Even if we do import food, so what? The only reason that would be a problem is if a blockade stops us importing food and then that same blockade would stop our fishing fleet.
>>
>>26420253
Yeah go talk to her with our sister.

As for the food, would it be possible to increase our food output then, or is our holding tapped in terms of total arable land?
>>
>>26420310
>>26420160
>>26419941
We could just sink some wealth into building some big fucking granaries; better than relying on fishing fleets which can be stuck in port from weather or soldiers, or local informal arrangements.

It's a long term thing too - we know winter comes eventually and this is something that we can do to manage that.
>>
I find it hilarious that dispite our title 'the Iron Lord' we're also increidbly whipped.
Seriously we should just put our wife in charge, and save ourselves the hassle of having to consult her for every single thing.
>>
>>26420240
Weird, I totally just grabbed them from my google Auto-complete like the last 4-5. Must have been a technical glitch. I was pretty out of it, so I could have easily missed it.

>>
>>26420367
That is an excellent idea, why didn't I think of that. If we can store enough food to last a few years, then getting blockaded by neighbors wouldn't impact us that much.

I like it because it looks like it plays to our strengths more. We've got a powerful land army that could easily defend fortified granaries but at the moment our naval strength is pretty poor. We don't really have the ships to break out of a blockade or protect a shipping fleet so to secure self-sufficiency through fishing we need to build
>>fishing fleets
>>fishing infrastructure
>>a navy powerful enough to break out of our hypothetical neighbours blockade AND protect the spread out fishing fleet at sea.

Even once we break the blockade we don't know if the enemies will attack the fishing fleet or simply sail in and destroying the ports so our navy needs to be split between both these options when the opponents can focus their entire force against whichever target they choose.

I also just remembered that without a dredged river our fishing fleet and navy are restricted in size which is another problem with relying on fishing to feed ourselves.

I agree, if we want a merchant fleet, we need a naval fleet to back it up, which is my concern. I don't want to depend on anyone else for the security of our merchandise. Also, a certain House is going to go nuts sooner or later, right? Bet you they'd love going after our iron shipping lanes.

I'll go with this one.

You gather your sister (whose name escapes me and I can't find, so for right now, it's Britta) and wife, and proceed off to visit Lady Arryn, bringing with you the gifts you had procured for her.
She has not left the garden where you left her ten minutes ago, and you introduce your sister to her.
"My Lady Lysa, you know my wife, Alyssa, and I would like you to meet my sister, Britta Ruttiger. Her desire to see the beauty of your court and yourself is what drove us to visit your home."

(15 on Flattery! Lysa is pleased!)

"Oh, Lord William, you're too kind. Miss Ruttiger, is it? I'm always happy to have new friends here. Most of my friends remain in the Riverlands. I have only Petyr, my husband, and your brother's wife when he deigns to lend her to me."

"May I also present you a gift, my lady?"\

"My lady, I hear you have a love of heroics, let me tell you of our most recent adventure: bandits on the road here!"

(Persuasion...Success)

You tell the story of the bandit attack with sufficient skill to please Lysa, and keep her interested. After, you turn your conversation to the evils of banditry, and the need for strong leaders to keep the smallfolk ordered. Your sister argues with you for a bit about the exact meaning of "strong" and "ordered", pointing out that a noble lord with a weak hand is, in her opinion, preferable to a competent thug.
This leads into discussion of shining examples of knights, and swiftly, into marriable examples of knights. You decide discretion in this moment is the better part of valor, and leave the women to talk about how gallant Willas looked while you were falling unconscious into the dirt.

Benn's arm is wrapped in a poultice. He seems in decent spirits, when you speak with him.

Alright, right now mom and dad are leading, so let's do that.

Your parents were given their own chambers, which you knock upon and gain entry. Your mother seems wearied and worried by the last few day's exertions and travails, while your father seems more interested in the wealth of the Eyrie, and potential succulence of the feast.
"He's not one of those men who lose their care for flavor in their age, is he, son?" He asks with a wary eye. "I'd hate for us to have food that's bland as it is fine."
You mother interjects "I'm sure Lord Arryn's cooks will season your dishes perfectly fine dear. I suspect our son wishes to talk of more than just dinner."

"Father, two Lords, three Chiefs, and a Knight are in attendance, I have no doubt the table will be brimming with foods."
"How are you feeling, Mother? The bandit attack shook many of us, and as they were hunting for you, I expect that it shook you worst than most."

"I'm...fine, dear. Part of the shock was seeing you in real combat for the first time, along with your...what do you call them?

"Bloodsmiths, mother."

"Yes. My word, you men are proficient at inflicting death."

"Aye, that's my son!" Your father interjects. "Fierce as a wolverine, and strong as a Bear! I saw the Rage take you when you pierced that bandit's heart with your pick, son. You're a testament to the man who earned us our lands, Iflen Ruttiger, the Red Rage himself!"

"Quite, dear. It's just strange to watch your own son slay men as...efficiently as he did."

You nod your head.
"I was trained well, mother. The best way to keep my family safe is the swift destruction of those who threaten it."

"HA! If those weren't Tywin's words, I'll walk home on my hands like a mummer!"

You smile, for your father is right.

(sorry on the delay, long post. continued)
>>
>>26423668

"By the way, I spoke with Lord Baelish about an opportunity for increasing revenue in my lands, what do you think of it?"

You briefly lay out Littlefinger's idea. Your father mulls it over for a time, while your mother wrinkles her brown in thought. She speaks first.

"Assuming you've no quarrel with the Lynderlys, I can't see a great loss in it. It should move your iron quicker to Gulltown, which, if I'm not mistaken, is the main shipping point for the Vale. So anything that wasn't going out by land would be handled more quickly. It could even help foster relations with the Lynderlys for you,"

Your father nods. "And more trade means more tariffs, means more coin in Littlefinger's pockets.I don't see a trick, boy. Though, I admit, the boy's proven himself more cunning than I with ledgers and coins."

Your mother nods again.
"I suspect, son, that Littlefinger is honestly giving you a good deal. No doubt in hopes of getting you to take a bad one later."

Your parent's opinions sounded, you bid them farewell.

As far as I can tell, you really only have maybe 2 things left to do
>talk to wife about deal
>have feast with everyone.

And then your business at the Eyrie will be essentially done. (Sure, you could go through a few days of repeating most of the "talk to X" options, but I see no reason to write it all out. We can just say you stay <as long as you deem appropriate> and get back to home.

After speaking with your parents, you wait for your wife to return to your chambers after her meeting with Lady Arryn. She returns in good spirits, and informs you that your sister and Lysa are getting along well.

You're happy, but mention that you've had a recent business proposition from Littlefinger, and given her insight on the last one, you'd like her input.

She assents readily, and you explain the plan to her: your ships run a short sail to Snakeswood, where the Lynderlys haul your iron to Gulltown, where your men there will send them off on the greater fleet there.

You wife thinks on it for a moment.

"The greatest factor I see for this is trust, William. That and the Lynderlys. If you can use their port for little cost, then you're increasing speed without increasing cost, which will profit you. If they charge too much, then it's speed that gains you little."
"The men at the port would gain you more control over where your weapons go, as you'd have men on hand to enforce it, though if they're bought by someone else, you'll leak money. But, with your men there at the dock, you might see some greater returns. At present, once your iron reaches Gulltown, you sell it to someone there, who tries to make a profit from it in foreign lands. This way, with Doma's ships, you could start selling directly in other markets."

She pauses.
"Assuming that you trust everyone involved, there's no reason to NOT do it. If you distrust Doma or Petyr, it's a little more questionable.

Awesome. Let's punch this out.

After a few days, You and your family decide you've spent enough time in the Eyrie, and you inform Jon that you'll be going the next day. He orders the kitchens to prepare a farewell feast for you and your family.

The feast lives up to your father's hopes. Venison in a port and pepper sauce, roasted pheasant, and glazed ham. Mountainberry tarts, warm and thickly jellied, with a crisp crust. Greens dressed with nuts and oils, potatoes roasted in the coals under the venison. A dozen plates bedeck the table, some large enough to bear a babe in swaddling clothes.

As you feast and revel, you have opportunities to talk further with three individuals, to attempt to raise their opinion of you/ learn more.
Who?
>Jon Arryn
>Lysa Arryn
>Petyr Baelish
>Alyssa, your wife
>Britta, your sister
>Ivain, Your mother
>Renard Your father

I'll do it.

Anyone got a summary I can use?

>Britta, your sister

No sure about the third..

Priority One. We need to be the Hand behind the Hand, if at all possible.
>Britta
I don't know, ask what conclusions the ladies reached about eligible, hansom knights?
>Petyr
Doubt much will come of it, which is why he's 3rd on the list, but it's worth a shot.
>>
>>26424455
No worries, I typically handle it at the end.
Though I apparently screwed up the tags last time, though it's weird that it has the game of thrones tag, but doesn't show up when you search by that tag.

William initiates intrigues in the Eyrie, inspects an invitation by Littlefinger, and ingratiates himself with the upper crust.

In which we solidify our relationship with Jon, run from girl talk, and enjoy a feast.

>Jon Arryn
As you eat heartily of your Lord's fare, you talk to him of the burdens of the many demands of a lords' time, and how he manages it. He shakes his head ruefully, and answers that he occasionally fails, as all men do, but that he tries to sovle the important problems first.
"LIke the Martells after the war?"
"Yes. And perhaps the Martells soon again if your feud with Oberyn grows."
"He attacked a man of mine, using poison. My honor demands repayment."
He nods.
"I know well the debt of a lord to those in his care. Remember, Robert is King now because I refused to let two boys in my care go to a madman's clutches. I can not openly endorse your battles, but know that I will try and let you regain your honor."
(relationship improved!)

>Britta
You turn your eyes, and lean over your lady wife to speak with your sister.
"The Eyrie all you hoped it would be, sister?"
She looks at you, and draws her smile in.
"It will suffice, I suppose." Then she smiles at her faint praise.
It is the first smile untouched by sorrow, irony, or other heavy emotion she has given you since your reunion.
"Well, if this doesn't impress you, I'll have to make an excuse to go to King's Landing, and drag you along." You respond.
Her eyes widen in excitement, and her smile widens.
You suspect that the next time you must head the King's Landing, your sister WILL ride with you, regardless of your wishes.

>Petyr
"Lord Baelish," you call, as he sits some short distance away, beside the Lady Arryn. "Tell me, will I be able to feast like in my keep if I agree to your proposal?"
Petyr smiles back.
"My lord, give me seven years, and I shall make every plate in the Eyrie, Morderengrad, and my own meager home golden, and the food upon it fresh as water from a mountain stream."
"Ha! A bold claim, my lord."
"Not so bold as extorting the King at a feast, Lord William. As ever, your courage flies beyond mine."
"Maybe, but I suspect you land in the dirt less frequently!"
Petyr smiles more warmly at the compliment.
"My Lord Bordain, I was told you were a murderous brute. I must say, of all the brutes I've met, you're certainly the most cordial."

(Littlefinger relationship up!)

As the feast winds to a close, you retire to your chambers with your wife, ready to return home the next day.

FIN

NEXT TIME: MO MONEY, MO PROBLEMS. KEEPING UP WITH THE BORDAINS, AND DARK WINGS, DARK WORDS!

As ever, I'll be bouncing around for the next little while, ready for questions or feedback.

At worst, I'll see the thread tomorrow morning, and answer things at the start of next thread.

I'm gonna pass out, but I wrote some shit down to ask about in the morning. Hopefully I can catch the thread before it dies. If not, next thread will do.

How long will it be until the Ironborn Rebellion?

And will we get to interact with other lords & ladies of the Seven Kingdoms other Tywin or the ones in the Vale?
>>
>>26425074

You there, Page?
>>
>>26425095

Offhand, I need to go count the months that have passed, but I'm pretty sure it's about a year until the Rebellion.

If you guys want, you can, yes. the WHY may be a little tricky.

Sorry on the delay, working on my RL campaign in the Dresden Files RPG.

>>26425074
thank you page!
