The time was right, Gronk could feel it in the air. The trolls were ready for battle, and the dwarves had made their opinions on the trolls clear. For a little while, Gronk debated destroying the lot of them. They had destroyed more than they had made, making the case for wiping them out. On the other hand, why waste their deaths? If they spearheaded the attack on Märlas, his soldiers would be spared the worst of the battle. The only question was what to arm then with. The statue in the great hall had a large assortment dwarf weapons piled on the floor at its feet, which were do nothing other than gather dust and rust. If they were too heavily armed, however, they might take it into their heads to turn against their masters. In the end, he decided on hammers and pick axes, neither of which were terribly efficient weapons. They would be dressed in light leather amour, which would doubtless distress them. Most of dwarfish the warriors the trolls had encountered had been dressed in heavy metal armour, with almost none wearing leather.

It took a week to gather the supplies and organise the trolls for the battle. Food was gathered, goats slaughtered and trolls equipped with their weapons. Each group of claw wielders and shield bearer was given enough provisions for the trip and was assigned a group of dwarves and goblins to supervise on the journey. The day before they left, he summoned his war council to him. Ragnar, Moruk, Vulug and Ashanorg came to the raised platform in the great hall, each eager to hear what his role in the battle would be. Vulug was less than thrilled with his, as he and Ragnar would be advisors and not be a part of the charge. Moruk and Ashanorg felt more at home with theirs, as they would both be at the front of the trolls and goblins. The dwarves would go first, or be destroyed. They would wash clean their past sins in blood, or by removed from the world and memory.

Once they reached the area of the city, the snow thinned out to the point the trolls and goblins could see the grass on the ground. It was clear that the cities’ defences were in as bad repair that Moruk, Medal and Ragnar had reported. There were several cracks in the walls large enough for two trolls to enter abreast, as well as more that would admit goblins. The gates would clearly be felled by a blow from even the smallest of the bulls.

I'm here. Hopefully I can be a better troll than last time.

It took slightly less time than expected to get into position, as a look out spotted Gronk’s detachment. With the need for stealth removed, the trolls hastened to their places. Then came the first part of the plan; demoralising the defenders. Stationed in front of the trolls and goblins were the dwarves, yet to be granted their arms or armour. In other words, completely helpless. At Gronk’s signal, the trolls pounced on the bearded rats and slaughtered them. The blood curdling screams that echoed across the city, along with the sight of an army of trolls engaging in a gory feast, would doubtless sap the will from the strongest of heads. However, Gronk wasn’t finished. Another signal from him, and those bodies not eaten were hurled high into the air and over the walls. Shrieks of terror, anger and disgust echoed from inside. Laughs, cat calls and roars come from outside. Even the goblins, now thoroughly desensitised to violence after their time living with the trolls, joined in.

It was clear the bulls were rearing and ready, but Gronk’s plan included one more phase before the attack. Now he would use the magic at his disposal to bombard the enemy. From his side, fire rained on those standing on the walls and the buildings just inside. From Ragnar’s third, sharpened tree trunks propelled themselves high into the air, before plummeting down with incredible force. From Vulug and Moruk’s side, flames and rocks struck in small numbers but it was the huge ballista bolts that really caused the damage. Even from his far off position, Gronk could see that his son and his heir were doing their best to outdo each other to cause the most damage. Were he a human, he would have rolled his eyes.

The bombardment had a devastating effect, both on the walls and the buildings inside. The fire launched by Gronk and Vulug had caught onto many of the houses, setting half the city ablaze. The walls were in ruins, and there were corpses covering them, some still smoking. And yet, there was still no sign of the Minotaurs reported by Vulug. Could they have left?

I reckon that the missing Minotaurs may seek to ambush us. If they are still honorably defending Märlas, we can expect to fight them.

I'm curious what people think about the Minotaur corpses after we kill them. Obviously we'll eat another one, which may improve our current ability to mate (possibly solving our problem with the Dwarf females).

Gronk knew that charging headlong into the now burning city would only result in his warriors burning to a crisp around him. He would be able to force the flames to part for him, but he couldn’t protect everyone. Instead, he decided to take another tip from the books on siege craft acquired by Vulug; when your enemy is in a defensible position, see that he stays there. Granted, a burning city is not exactly defendable, but the principle still stood. The fire would kill those inside just as well as it would kill trolls. Let them use time and energy fighting the fires, so that they would be that much less eager to fight when the trolls moved in.

As the trolls waited, they started to grow bored. It was one of the trolls in Ragnar’s band that came up with a way to maintain bloodlust and pass the time. Taking the half eaten corpse of dwarf, he placed it on the floor in line with a crack in the wall. Lying in the crack was a burning human, supported by the wall itself. Taking a short run up, the troll booted the dwarf’s body at the human’s. It missed its mark by a few metres, shattering against the wall with a crunch of shattering bone and separating meat. The troll seemed irritated by his failure, but his comrades laughed and quickly began gathering up as many corpses as they could. Instead of aiming for the human’s body, they tried to hit the bloody wreckage of the first dwarf kicked. Body after body sailed across the gap, exploding against the walls. It caught on across the army, laughs echoing against the wall of the city.

With a gesture, Gronk summoned the fire to his fists. With a flick of his wrists, he sent a torrent of them high into the air. The pillars rose far above the city, before twisting down towards the distant figures. Landing a dozen or so metres behind them, the effect was instantaneous. There were pained shrieks, and many of the figures started to flee in the only direction available; out of the city. As they spilled into the open, Gronk gestured to the goblin next to him. The goblin’s name was Defran, and he was one of the goblin’s who had originally accompanied Moruk on his travels. His face was gnarled like a tree root, covered in scars and missing chunks. With one eye, one ear and half a nose, Defran looked the part. After watching him spar with the other goblins, Gronk knew he was everything he looked like. It had been a unanimous decision to make him the war leader for the goblins. The sign that passed between them now was the signal for a volley, which was launched seconds later. It struck the massed, milling ranks of the enemy from above. Figures dropped and started to spread.

Seeing that now was the time to strike, Gronk gave his signature roar and set off. Behind him, his trolls howled there approval as they fell into line with him. Gronk’s powerful pace let him cover the ground in matter of moments, but the sight that greeted him was a little disappointing. The humans were armed and armoured in rusting metal that was far inferior to what the dwarves had been armed with. Many of them merely had round pot helms and sticks, proving that this would not be a challenge.

Looking back to the goblins at the rear, Gronk saw Defran desperately waving at him. Shoving the other trolls out of his way, he pushed to the back of the crowd. Defran was now pointing and gesticulating at where Moruk and Vulug had been stationed. Looking that way, Gronk saw why. The group of trolls there were beset on both sides by huge armoured shapes, that could only be the missing Minotaurs. The battle was spread over about thirty metres between the wall and where the trolls had been stationed. For a moment, Gronk was sure he could see the shapes of Moruk and Vulug in the middle of the fray.

With a growl, Growl barked out orders to the nearest trolls. As attractive as eating the feeble humans was, serving the marked one was more important. The trolls formed up behind him, except for one Gronk sent to the goblins. Denfar and his followers were to capture as many of the humans as possible, and then to venture into the city and find the rest of them. Females were to be a priority. Gronk and the trolls reformed a line, tried to give another roar of confidence, and charged. Gronk could tell their confidence was shaken, and the sight of headless trolls on the floor improved the situation not at all. As they neared the enemy, Gronk realised his trolls were actually dropping back for fear of striking the Minotaurs alone. Disgusted, Gronk knew he would have to remind them who was the god here. Screaming a throat rending battle cry, Gronk launched himself into the air.

Sorry guys, I'm not feeling so great. If you want, I'll keep going for another half hour or so. Or we can leave it here for tonight, and pick up from the cliff hanger the day after tomorrow.
