You are Christopher Phillips, previously just another teenage nerd living in a small English town, and a lot of things have changed in your life since you died.

You’ve dealt with werewolves, ancient spirits, the servants of demons and your own dark hungers. Right now, however, you’d happily fight all of them at once to get this over with and get back home, where it’s bright and warm. You’re starting to think this wasn’t your smartest idea.

You’re trying to track down one of your schoolmates, Ajani. Apparently he’s on a bit of a vigilante kick: he patrols the streets after dark, looking for trouble. You should maybe have wrapped up a bit warmer for this. You didn’t realise how chilly it would be – it was nice and warm before the sun went down.

Barrellton isn’t a big town, but it’s got enough streets and buildings that you’re not going to find Ajani just by wandering around at random. But you also can’t find him by just going to wherever the hot-spots of crime are – Barrellton is a quiet, rural town. It doesn’t *have* hot-spots of crime. So, where would a vigilante hang around?
>>
>>26373690
[]Head to the north side of town, the richer area. That’s where the money is. Of course, you might also bump into Isabella.
[]Head to the centre of town, the high street and the park. It’ll have the most people, which might boost your chances of running into Ajani. Or someone else.
[]Head south, amongst the businesses and warehouses. Alleyways and warehouses are where crime happens, right?
[]Head east, to the poorer area of town. The fact that you’ll also be near Avril’s woods and the street where Jill lives is a complete coincidence and is certainly not influencing your decision.

Hoozah!
>>

((Okay.... writing next post then, I guess.))
>>
>>26374109
You figure that if there's any crime going on around here it will probably be away from the houses and streetlights, where no-one will see it. Your lines of sight will be even more obscured by the warehouse buildings and old factories, but maybe you'll hear someone and be able to track them down.

You’re having trouble finding any crime, as such. Or any other people at all. There’s just a lot of dark, gloomy alleyways, with the occasional stray cat to keep you on your toes. It’s boring and distinctly cold out here, and you don’t –

What was that?

You definitely heard something. A clattering, like footsteps on... metal?

He couldn’t be, could he? It’d be daredevil and heroic, but it would also be stupid and reckless... but there’s that clattering noise again, and it’s definitely coming from up above. Ajani – or somebody, but you can’t think who else it would be – is running along the roof of one of the warehouses, the corrugated iron rattling under his feet. As you look up, you can see a silhouette against the night sky as someone leaps from one roof to the next, straight over the alleyway you’re in.

You’re pretty sure you’ve found Ajani. Talking to him might be a bigger issue, though.

[]Try and find a ladder or a fire escape, some way to climb up onto the rooftops, and try to follow him.
[]Follow him at ground level, through the alleyways. He’s got to come down sooner or later.
[]Make some noise, try to catch his attention. Maybe you can lure him down?

I am beginning to believe that trying to track down a Hunter, when we are the kind of thing he hunts, at night, alone, was a bad idea.
>>
[]Try and find a ladder or a fire escape, some way to climb up onto the rooftops, and try to follow him.

Running on ground is asking to lose him.

Chasing him on the rooftops will catch his attention. Now, if that's good or bad...

>>
>>26374633
You glance around - there's got to be some way up onto the rooftops. He had to have got up there himself somehow, after all.

Over there. If you can just get over this fence... oof. Okay. You grab what looks like a maintenance ladder of some sort, and start climbing. After a couple of minutes of climbing, you're getting tired, and the cold metal on your hands really isn't helping, but you're up on the roof of the warehouse.

The roof is broad, bare and not too steeply angled. As long as you keep your footing you're probably not going to go sliding off. Two long lines of skylights flank the peak of the roof, and you can see the occasional small pipe or chimney sticking out here and there. There's a crouched figure at the far corner of the roof - you think he might be looking down into the alleyways below, scanning them for movement and things of interest.

[]Stay over here and watch him. No sense in getting too close to a vigilante on the prowl.
[]Walk straight over and greet him loudly. You're classmates, right? Nothing to worry about?
[]Sneak quietly towards him. You still haven't confirmed this is Ajani, and you don't want to startle him
[]Maybe this was a bad idea? You can talk to him at school. Where it's warmer.

If Avril is anyone to go by, people in the supernatural have little compunction against shooting and killing first, asking questions later.
Which would be the same with a Hunter.

Hey now, we have a legitimate reason to look for him. Chris heard a rumour and came to see if it was true, that's it. Then dominance conversation ensues, and etc.

>>
>>26375245
You came here to talk to Ajani, and that's what you're going to do. And you're not sure how you'd go about sneaking on a corrugated iron roof anyway.

You haul yourself to your feet and start calmly walking along the roof, trying to avoid the skylights and pipes. Your footsteps are echoing into the night, and fairly soon the silhouetted figure has turned to look at you. Once you get a bit closer you wave and call out "Hey there, Ajani. It is Ajani, right? It's Chris. From school. How're you doing?"

The shadowy figure starts walking across the roof towards you. As he gets closer, the light starts to improve a bit and you can see that it's definitely the guy from your Biology and Geography classes. His skin is fairly dark brown, his hair is black and cut very short, and he's wearing a zipped-up black leather jacket and black jeans. There's a bag slung over his shoulder, with a strap diagonally across his chest.

"... Chris? What the hell are you doing here? Were you looking for me?"

"Well, you know, I was just walking around, thought I spotted you, I figured I'd come over and say hi..."

"You were just walking around? In the industrial district, in the middle of the night? And you climbed up onto a rooftop to say hi?" Ajani's voice is fairly level, but his expression is distinctly unamused.

"Okay, so someone may have mentioned you were going out fighting crime and stuff. It sounded cool."

Ajani frowns a little. "What, you came to help me out? Or just to gawk?"
>>
>>26375611
"Came to help out, Broheim. Thought you might want some back up. Cheesy I know, but I figure as long as Im out here, I dont have to be alone ya know? with all these strange attacks..."

"Well ever since the "thing" happened at school, and my little sister got chased by a big "dog", I wanted to look into whats going on around us."

"Well, mostly I was just curious if it was true, but... now that I know someone's out there, doing something? Sure. Count me in. Ever since that girl disappeared at school, and this enormous dog attacked my little sister... I've been wanting to look into what's going on, maybe do something about it. You know what I mean, don't you?"

Ajani nods sternly. "Absolutely. These attacks, the crimes, the..." He trails off a little, then shakes his head. "You don't know the half of it, Chris. There's some bad stuff running around under the surface of our little town. Stuff you wouldn't believe. But every person who has my back is another person standing against the darkness. So thank you." He steps forward and offers his hand, then clasps your arm at the elbow and slaps you on the back with his other hand. It's kind of awkward and rehearsed.

As you separate again, Ajani gives you an appraising glance and nods. "Right. First thing is, there's no point having two of us up here. I'm going to be jumping from rooftop to rooftop a lot, to get good vantage points, and I can't carry you across those gaps. Meet me in the library tomorrow, I'll introduce you to the rest of the team, show you some of the books we've been looking through." He nods again, looking thoughtful, and then turns and walks off. You can see that bag much more clearly now - it's some sort of long, thin sports bag, for golf clubs or hockey sticks.

Well, that was... productive, maybe? What do you want to do now?
>>
>>26376026
Well then...

Time to go walking around the rich district. Lets do a little wanton exploration.
>>
>>26376026
((He's still on the same rooftop, for the moment. If you want to catch up with him and talk more, that's certainly an option. It's still really cold out here, though.))

>>26376026
Let's check over by The poorer areas, where Jill and Avril are.

And fuck, we're getting introduced to a team of Hunters. And we're the kind of undead abomination they hunt.
Was this really a good idea? Because I can just feel the fast approaching wood chipper.
>>
>>26376026

>>

perhaps, but we aren't immediately recognizable as supernatural and being hunters they may be reluctant to check with magic.
>>
>>26376297
I posit that Anjani isn't quite aware of his status as Chosen Hunter™ (assuming he is) so he might not be certain what it is he hunts. He was surprisingly trusting so either he's clever enough to just reveal enough to make us THINK he is ignorant or too ignorant to know better.

Mainly we've got to make sure nobody notices how cold our hands are. Other than that we pass as human pretty well.

Backup excuse, claim to have come back from the dead to avenge our murder. Hero types eat that up.
>>
>>26376317
You walk further along the roof, following Ajani. "So, do you do most of your hunting in the industrial district, then? Have you had a lot of success so far?"

Ajani keeps looking out over the rooftops as he answers you, shifting his stance slightly so that he's posing a little bit against the skyline. "Not as much success as I'd like to have. The darkness grows night after night. But we'll win in the end, have no fear. As for the hunting, I go all over. Better views from up here, though." He glances around, then takes a few steps back, looking over at the next building.

"Okay, uh... since you're clearly busy, I'll see you at the library. Lots of things to ask about, too." Ajani simply nods in response, then takes a running jump and leaps over to the next building. He must be in incredibly good shape - that's a twenty, twenty-five foot gap at least.

You climb slowly down the ladder back to the ground, cursing yourself again for not thinking to wrap up warmer. On the plus side, if Ajani thought your hand was a bit cold, it should be easy to explain away.

You wander around the town for a little while. You find yourself walking almost subconsciously in the direction of Jill and Avril. Maybe you should drop by and see one of them.

>>
>>26377097

You're tempted to see if you can find Avril, but it's getting very late now, and you don't really want to be wandering through those woods in the middle of the night with no idea where you're going. You'll see her at school anyway.

You rush up to your room once you're inside, and bundle yourself up in a nice warm blanket. Not really having your own body heat is more of an issue than you'd really considered. You doubt you're going to freeze to death, but it's still pretty uncomfortable.

You're really too tired and too cold to start meditating at this point, even if you felt like it. You lie back and let Wednesday drift slowly into Thursday.

You get into your History classroom, and notice that Mr Miller isn't here, but one of the school secretaries is. Once everyone's seated, she clears her throat and waits for everyone to fall silent. "Mr Miller is taking a brief leave of absence due to illness. A substitute teacher from another district has agreed to fill in for him. Miss White will be your teacher for the next three weeks."

You glance over at Jill and notice that she's gone bone-white as the new teacher comes in. With a trembling arm she puts her hand up and asks to go to the bathroom, then rushes out of the door. The new teacher looks a little puzzled, but then asks everyone to open their textbooks and begin.

The substitute teacher frowns a little, but waves you on your way. "Very well, Mr... Phillips. Be back as quickly as possible, though."

You're not sure exactly where Jill would have gone. Fortunately you don't need to look too far - she's resting against a wall just round the corner, still looking a little worried. "Oh... Chris. Hey. You came to check on me, right? Thanks, but I'll be fine in a moment... was just kind of a shock."

"If you're sure... who was that woman? Your aunt?"

"Yeah. At least, I'm pretty sure she's my aunt - I haven't seen her in years. My mother said she went evil all of a sudden, sold out to the Devil and so on. Drilled it into my head that she was dangerous and not to be trusted. When I realised, I just sort of panicked a bit. I just need to... compose myself. I know she's probably not dangerous. Everything else my mother told me turned out to be nonsense. It was just the shock of seeing her again."

Jill smiles and hugs you back. "Thank you, Chris. We should maybe get back to class, then."

"Yeah, probably. Before we do, though, did your mother ever tell you anything more *specific* about your aunt? What did she do that made your mother try to disown her?"

Jill stops and thinks. "Uh... not that I can recall. I mean, my mother isn't massively specific at the best of times. Let me think. Servant of Satan, sold her soul, became a filthy heathen, broke fellowship with the true Church.... any of those could mean absolutely anything, really. Pretty much everything is Satanic according to my mother."

The two of you head back into the classroom and retake your seats. Jill's aunt only bears a passing resemblance to Jill, but you can pick out family features if you're looking, a shape to the nose, a set of the chin. Miss White is blonde, tall, slim, and generally good looking. She's also a much more animated and engaging teacher than Mr Miller ever was, and you end up learning quite a lot.

Chemistry is your last class before lunch, and you find you suddenly have a few more seating options.

You wave at Jill and Avril as you look around the classroom, then nod your head in Zack's direction. Jill waves back happily; Avril seems a little less pleased, but she nods and waves as you go by.

You slide into the seat next to Zack, and he grins and pats you on the back. "Hey, Chris. We gonna be lab partners today, then? Awesome. We're going to make a great team, man."

Zack is perhaps being a little optimistic. He's strong, but a little clumsy, not all that bright, and distractable. Still, he holds things and follows instructions well enough, and he's not actively stupid or dangerous. You don't have much time for small talk while setting this lesson's experiment up (a fairly simple titration, but it takes delicate measuring), and besides, it seems Zack doesn't have all that much to talk about once you run out his store of rugby-related conversation.

Once you've got everything set up and just need to sit back and take measurements, you decide to mention the attacks to Zack. He nods and agrees that what happened was terrible. You mention that there was another attack on Saturday evening, but don't give him much in the way of details. Zack looks somewhat troubled, but doesn't suddenly start blurting anything out.

[]Press the issue. Ask Zack what he was doing Saturday night. Bring up his injuries again.

Ask Zach if he has heard the rumors about the huge dog biting people around town. Pretty crazy they havn't caught it right?

Ask him if he's heard any rumors of a large doglike creature attacking people.

((Okay, three votes for discussing the huge dog, two for not pressing further. Writing now.))

"Don't worry about it, Zack. There haven't been any new reports of attacks for a while now, I'm sure we're safe. Have you heard the latest crazy rumour, though? Apparently there's this utterly enormous dog going around biting people. Pretty weird, huh? I can't imagine how they haven't caught it yet, if it's that big... must be one of those urban legends, right?"

"Hahahahaha. Yeah. Right. Crazy stuff, those rumours. Totally weird. Unbelievable. I wouldn't put any stock in them. Anyway. You going to the rugby match on Saturday? We're playing against the Tigers. Big match. What do you think?"

Well, that wasn't a blatantly awkward change of subject at all, no sir. Or a bout of nervous laughter.

"I might find the time, yeah. Sounds like a pretty important game. You're playing, then?"

"Of course, man. Team can't function without a good full-back. Guess I'll see you in that stands. Bring that cute little girlfriend of yours along too." Zack winks at you, grabs his bag and heads off to lunch.

You're supposed to be meeting Ajani and his friends in the library at some point today, but he didn't actually say when. If you want to take some time to prepare, you have a bit of leeway.

[]Head straight to the library. No point dragging this out.
[]Talk to Avril first. See if she's found anything out or has any advice
[]Your lunchtime is your own. Go and see them after school instead, and do something else (what?) at lunch.

We need to know if she's dealt with Hunters before, and what we can expect.

You fall in next to Avril as she leaves the classroom. "I'm heading to the library in a bit, to meet with Ajani's little club. Anything you know so far?"

"Ajani could probably be on a sports team if he weren't so busy. He's never displayed any interest in boys, so that bit might be an uphill slope. He's not the brightest spark. Don't know much about his friends, they seem to keep to themselves. I still don't trust James. Not sure why Ajani seems to trust him, for that matter. He seems to be kinda naive - although not as bad as you." Avril kisses your cheek and smiles. "I'm going to take Jill and sit outside, okay? That way you don't have to worry about us."

"Okay. Any advice about dealing with monster-hunters in general? Have you faced any before?"

Avril frowns. "Not all that many, but I know the general advice of the court: don't get shot. It hurts like a bitch. That's about it. Oh! One thing." She takes you by the hand and drags you into the girl's bathroom. Five minutes later, you have a slowly drying set of purple nails, covering over the green and leaf pattern.

You look around the library, trying not to flex your still-drying nails too much. Ajani, James and a couple of others - one guy, two girls. One of the girls wrinkles her nose a little and turns to Ajani. "Is this your idea of a joke, Ajani? Having a husk join our discussion?"

The whole table looks clearly shocked at her announcement. Ajani also looks angry. With her or you, you can't tell.

((Okay, and considering it is past 4am and tiredness is definitely taking its toll on me, we're breaking for the night. Next thread will be Saturday the 3rd of August. It will hopefully start sometime around 19:00GMT, but given how that time keeps slipping, just keep an eye on the catalog. Thread archived in the usual place.))

As surprised I should be about being called out by a girl as being a soulless skinwalking corpse, Im more surprised to find out we had painted nails this whole time.

And apparently Avril just paints our nails.... Is this like a British thing guys do?
>>
>>26381198
((You don't have painted nails most of the time. You have bright green nails with faint hints of leafy veins, a side effect of that Fae pact you made, but there's no paint involved. British guys do not typically paint their nails, but Avril figured it would be less conspicuous to have painted nails than to have leaves for nails.))

Ah! Thanks for Clarification....

Well.... i suppose we shall say we lost a bet if asked.

Thanks for the Quest. This cliffhanger is so mean.

>Well.... i suppose we shall say we lost a bet if asked.
Not going to do much to keep the Hunters from putting us through a wood chipper.
We've also outed ourselves as a supernatural, and now our entire family is in danger of being exterminated, as are all of our associates.

This was a really stupid idea, in hindsight. We've just compromised our entire powerbase, assuming we can get out of this without being permanently killed.
